Although the future of Washington Cathedral in Redmond is still up in the air, members of the church community are not too worried. The church’s property at 12300 Woodinville-Redmond Road N.E. was recently put on the market after leaders spent more than a year in negotiations with lenders. While Washington Cathedral’s buildings and property are up for sale, Rey Diaz, Washington Cathedral’s lead pastor, stressed that they are not selling the church. “The church is the people,” he said. “We’re going to be strong…We feel that God still has a plan for us.”

The calm atmosphere changed dramatically when Bree Casey asked people to unleash a barrage of noise for a full minute. “Scare cancer. Let them know we’re not going to stop until it’s gone,” Casey, 18, told the crowd from the speakers’ podium at the start of the Relay for Life 24-

HIT BY THE RECESSION
Diaz said the sale comes after the church tried to refinance its mortgage on the property, which includes the main church and the smaller chapel. Washington Cathedral had started a building plan on its property with projections based on growth. Diaz said they initially had a lot of momentum and “things were going great,” but the projections made in 2006 ended up being too low and then the recession hit. [ more CATHEDRAL page 7 ]

roles as spokesman at the podium, they presented a formal resolution asking the city to support a downtown shuttle bus service that would benefit seniors and other residents. According to their plan, the route would start and end at the Redmond Senior Center and visit all the major Redmond destinations, including shopping areas,
hospitals and parks. Hours could be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and cost $2 a day or $20 per month, Lester told council. Two buses running continuously could carry 14 people at a time. “We want Redmond to be the instigator and start-up of this (circuitous) system,” Lester said. [ more COUNCIL page 3]

Report says Redmond’s daytime population spike is top in U.S. Andy Nystrom anystrom@redmond-reporter.com
When people in the surrounding communities leave for work in the morning, many of them are headed to Redmond. According to a new U.S. Census Bureau report, Microsoft Corp. and other major employers are the main reason why Redmond’s population rises from 52,124 to 110,195 during daytime business hours. That’s a 111.4 percent hike in population due to commuting workers.
Redmond is top on the list in the U.S. for cities with a population of 50,000 or more. Rounding out the top five are Greenville, S.C. (97.9 percent boost), Alpharetta, Ga. (85.2), Palo Alto, Calif. (82.5) and Salt Lake City, Utah (80.0). The U.S. Census Bureau conducted the American Community Survey over a five-year period from 2006-10. “As one of the world’s largest research and development centers, Microsoft offers a tremendous number of desirable jobs and we are very appreciative of the supportive climate
Overlake Terrace receives ‘stellar’ status Overlake Terrace, a “stellar” community in Redmond, has been honored by SeniorHomes. com as a recipient of its “Best Senior Living Awards” in the Seattle metropolitan area. To determine the winners of these awards, SeniorHomes. com, along with a panel of local experts, assigned numerical scores on a scale of one to 10 to each facility. Scores are based on a number of weighted factors, including reviews from residents and their families, ratings from local industry experts and public state inspection data.
A group of top communities were identified in the Best Senior Living Awards program as the “Top Rated” in Seattle. SeniorHomes.com will be expanding its ratings program and the Best Senior Living Awards to the top 50 U.S. metropolitan areas with the goal of identifying the top senior living communities across the country. After announcing the awards winners in all 50 markets, SeniorHomes.com will announce the top 100 senior living communities across the United States later this year.

We encourage the Legislature to pass a transportation package this year to fund critical mobility and safety projects.” Jeri Rowe-Curtis, City of Redmond chief policy adviser and communications and marketing administrator, said the surge is the result of the growth in well-paying jobs in combi-

“We want this to be a convenient, safe and easy transportation that provides access not only for seniors but all the other citizens.” He added that the buses could also drop students off at school and cut down on vehicle drive time and reduce air pollution. The shuttle plan has been in the works for four years, Lester said, noting that a 2009 Redmond Parks and Recreation Department and senior center advisory committee study noted that transportation for seniors was the No. 1 concern.
nation with strong economic growth, which supports both large and small businesses and the city’s tax base. “Redmond imports at least 40,000 people per work day (in 2013). Because we have more jobs than residents, it is vital that Redmond remain an active voice on Sound Transit and with King County Metro to create transportation alternatives to driving a car alone,” said Mayor John Marchione. A large number of Redmond workers also live in the area. The report notes that the concept of the daytime population refers to
Seniors feel King County Metro’s current local bus service is inadequate due to fixed routes, limited destinations and complex schedules, according to their proposal. Council member Hank
Margeson noted that he wants council to discuss the seniors’ proposal further, as well. Sandy Marion, co-chair of the advisory committee, said that she felt their councilmeeting appearance went well. She added that the council seemed receptive to their proposal and “we feel that was a positive move” in wanting to add the shuttle plan to the council’s study sessions.

QFC Supports the Boys and Girls Clubs of Washington At QFC, youth are an important part of our company. Our school-age courtesy clerks help keep our checkstands running smoothly and efficiently, make sure our floors and restrooms remain clean and inviting and, most importantly they develop friendly, helpful relationships with our customers. Many of the leaders in our stores and offices began their careers in the grocery business as courtesy clerks. The young people of today are the future leaders of tomorrow and that is why QFC is proud to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington as our charity of the month in June. Every young person deserves an opportunity to develop their potential to be a responsible, productive adult. Unfortunately, many young people don’t get the support and encouragement they need in their home life. That’s where Boys & Girls Clubs can make a difference. The mission of the clubs is to help
these young people to realize their full potential on the path to adulthood. The clubs provide youth from under 5 to 18 years of age a safe place to learn and grow, develop relationships with caring adult professionals, participate in life enhancing programs, and have character development experiences to gain hope and opportunity. The clubs are open after school and during the summer for the children in the communities they serve. They offer a variety of programs in the areas of leadership, education and career, the arts, health and life skills, sports, fitness and recreation and other specialized programs. Clubs are community-based and building-centered and are staffed by trained, paid youth-development professionals. Studies have found that youth involved long-term in Boys & Girls Clubs stay in school more often and have better grades and fewer con-
tacts with law enforcement than peers in similar circumstances. Many alumni of the program have credited it with saving their lives, improving their selfconfidence, graduating from high school and positively influencing their choices about drugs and alcohol. Each year local clubs choose a member as their Youth of the Year. Those youth from across the state share their life changing experiences at an annual dinner and also serve as representatives for their clubs to the communities at large. Youth of the Year participants also receive college scholarships and the op-
portunity to compete for national honors and scholarships. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington consists of 19 independent member organizations, each with its own board of directors, funding and staffing. These organizations serve over 79,000 Club members in 147 community locations. QFC invites you to contribute to the this worthy organization that is making a difference in the lives of so many of our young people. You can make a donation at any checkstand. REDMOND MAYOR
John Marchione
Our city and region are poised for economic recovery and growth, but one critical piece of the puzzle is missing. Our transportation system needs investment and it needs investment NOW. Our state highways, county roads, city streets, bridges and public transportation network are rapidly deteriorating and our economy depends on a transportation system that works. This year we have a real opportunity to improve the transportation system we all depend on and expect. A broad coalition of stakeholders, including business leaders, labor, environmentalists and local elected leaders have been working together and all agree that action is needed NOW. The governor and state legislative leaders from both parties have developed a proposal that addresses some of these most pressing challenges. Their priority is to better maintain the transportation infrastructure we have, grow our economy and jobs and support local transportation efforts and transit. Improvements along State Route (SR) 520 are needed to fix clogged and congested interchanges at 148th and 124th streets and support critical job expansion and economic redevelopment in the “Bel-Red Corridor” and Overlake areas. But this redevelopment and job expansion is at risk if there is no new revenue for highways, roads and public transportation to support this growth. Major transportation projects such as replacement of the SR 520 bridge are under construction but are still only partially funded. Long overdue projects aimed at easing traffic congestion and moving freight Eric Scroggins

generate revenue to avert significant transit service cuts that will happen in 2014 without additional funding. Our transportation system is the lifeblood of our economy. We must make a down payment today to maintain and repair critical infrastructure, move people and goods, grow jobs and the economy, and retain the quality of life that makes our region such a special place to live. We are counting on our elected officials in Olympia to choose to act NOW, in this special session of the Legislature, to adopt a Transportation Investment Package. Please urge your legislator to invest in our transportation system NOW. Let’s get this done.

Relay for Life is a great fund-raising event I am a committed participant in the Redmond-Kirkland Relay for Life event, and I want to thank you for the great article, with slide show (online), in the Redmond Reporter. The event is a great fund-raiser and a way for the participants to share their experience with others who are intimately aware of cancer. Your article will spread the word even further, and that is terrific.

through the state remain on the drawing board due to a lack of funding. Bridges, as we saw dramatically in the news, are structurally deficient and in need of repair. King County Metro and other transit agencies in the region have already cut bus service and additional large cuts are looming, impacting those dependent on public transportation for jobs, education and medical services. Missing or unsafe sidewalks and bicycle lanes make it difficult for children to get to school safely and bicyclists to commute to work. The $9.5 billion, 12-year Transportation Investment Package proposed by House Transportation Chair Judy Clibborn makes a significant down payment to address this growing problem. For Redmond, this package is absolutely necessary and worthy of support. We are working with lawmakers to ensure investments in SR 520 east of Interstate 405 are part of the package so that traffic can move freely along this corridor and through major interchanges. Redmond would receive more than $2.2 million over 12 years to help maintain our roads and bridges. Local jurisdictions would be able to

I attended a fund-raiser for Washington Alliance for Responsible Guns. I sat among 1,200 people of all ages, color, religion and politics — the Alliance. Dynamic speakers shared the message: “It’s well past time for this legislation. If Congress doesn’t have it in them to make this country a safer place, then we’ll do this one state at a time.” An initiative movement has begun and we can and will be heard at the grassroots level.

Hopes for dental coverage in Legislature special session It’s unfortunate that legislators couldn’t finish business in the regular legislative session, but there is at least one issue they can quickly agree upon in the special session: restoring dental coverage for adults on Medicaid. In 2011, the Legislature made deep cuts to benefits to remedy a budget shortfall. This left 450,000 people with only emergency care for their dental problems. No cleanings, no fillings — leading to deteriorating oral health. We’ve seen the neglect in patients coming to our HealthPoint medical and dental
clinics in King County. In search of relief for severe pain, the uninsured head to hospital emergency rooms where providers can only prescribe pain medication and antibiotics, not fix the underlying dental issue. This is a costly and ineffective way of treating patients. Gum disease is also linked to heart disease and stroke, and can affect people’s ability to work. Now legislators have the opportunity not only to provide dental coverage to hundreds of thousands of low-income Washingtonians, but to ensure that the state receives significant federal funding to support it. It’s an easy choice that legislators can check off their list.

Searles prepares for Miss USA competition in Las Vegas Joe Wilson Special to the Reporter
Five large suitcases: A week ago, that’s how much Cassandra Searles expected to pack as she planned her 19 days worth of ballroom gowns and bikinis for her journey to Las Vegas. On June 16, the 24-year-old Redmond resident will represent Washington at the Miss USA competition, competing not only for the Miss USA 2013 title, but also for the chance to represent the nation in the Miss Universe pageant. Just eight months ago, Searles was enjoying her success as the newly crowned Miss Washington 2013. Since then, she has devoted her time to both working for Sterling Bank in Bellevue and volunteering at nonprofit organizations. She continues to use her platform as recent pageant winner to advocate for programs like Junior Achievement, which helps children and teens develop skills to prepare them for future employment and partners with local businesses to connect with students in the community.
“I’ve worked with Junior Achievement for many years now, so it’s nice that I can actually use the Miss Washington title to bring more awareness to it,” said Searles, “I’m really passionate about teaching kids financial literacy.” Searles herself knows a thing or two about financial independence. When she was just 20, she purchased a home by herself. “I graduated high school when I was 17, and my parents moved out of state,” said Searles. “I didn’t want to move anymore because I moved a lot when I was younger. I wanted to stay in Washington, so I got a job at Sterling Bank, and a year after, I bought my home.” In addition to working for the Bellevue branch of the banking company, where she has spent the last six years, Searles also graduated from the University of Washington, Bothell with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. While she has only been participating in pageants for four years now, Searles looks forward to being on stage in front of the crowd.
“I’m most excited to go out on stage in front of all those people. I love the adrenaline rush, and showing off all the hard work that I’ve been putting in for the last few months,” she said. Searles has been going to the gym daily and consistently practicing her walk. What is her least favorite experience at pageants? “Having to be in heels,” Searles sighed. “Your feet end up hurting so bad after pageant weekend; they eventually go numb.” Searles is not nervous for the competition — in fact, she’s excited to enjoy the experience and take things as they come. “I honestly just want to have fun and not take it too seriously, because if I say ‘I have to win, I have to win,’ I’m going to miss the whole experience,” she said. People can support Searles and help her advance straight to the semifinals round of the Miss USA 2013 Pageant by picking her for the People’s Choice Vote. Go to www.missusa.com to vote. The competition will air live on NBC at 9 p.m. (EST) on June 16.

www.redmond-reporter.com [ CATHEDRAL from page 1] Despite the church’s healthy finances and membership, Diaz said the bank they were working with also struggled once the recession hit and could not offer them a refinancing option. “The only option was to put our property on the market,” he said. Diaz said the 15.5-acre piece of property is very valuable and they hope the sale will help pay off their debt, which adds up to about $15 million. For potential buyers, there are two options for the property sale. The first is the entire 15.5 acres and both buildings for $24 million. Diaz said the leftover money after the debt is paid could be used as a nest egg for a new location or for rent if the new buyer ends up leasing the buildings back to them. The second option is to divide the property and sell 10 acres and the large building as one portion and for Washington Cathedral to keep the remaining five acres and the smaller building. The sale from the second option would amount to about $18 million. “We don’t know what the future holds for us,” Diaz said, explaining that there has been a lot of interest and the potential buyers each want something different. “All these groups have a different take on it.”
‘IT’S OUR FAMILY’
Diaz acknowledged that a property sale as large as theirs is complex and will take a while, so in the meantime, they are continuing on as usual. Church leadership announced the sale to the
Washington Cathedral’s buildings and property are up for sale. Pictured is part of the church’s Redmond acreage. ANDY NYSTROM, Redmond Reporter congregation in March, and while members were initially sad, Doug Sutten said there has been a growing spirit of unity and togetherness in the church, as well. “We’re happy to embrace where we go next,” said Sutten, who is a member of the Washington Cathedral congregation and sits on the church’s board of directors. Sutten’s wife Jeanne Sutten was also sad when she first heard news of the sale and admitted that she did not want to move if it came to that. But after a while, she said she remembered that miracles happen and she knows God will lead them to greater things. Now Jeanne has a “go with the flow” attitude toward the sale. The Suttens have been with Washington Cathedral since it began almost 30 years ago and their adult children grew up in the church. Now that their children

have children of their own, Jeanne said most of them have come back to Washington Cathedral. One of their daughters even drives from Monroe, so geography is not much of an issue for them. “It’s our family,” Jeanne said about the congregation.
BEYOND THE CONGREGATION
This family Jeanne mentioned expands beyond the Washington Cathedral congregation as the campus is also home to a number of other congregations as part of a meta-church concept thought up by founder Tim White. Through the metachurch, Washington Cathedral hosts six additional congregations:
Hispanic, Korean, Native American, Egyptian Coptic, Brazilian and Pacific Islander. Diaz said while they “all believe a bit differently,” all of these cultures serve God. He said it is what he thinks heaven would be like: all different cultures in one place. Wanderson Godoi is pastor of The Vine, the Brazilian congregation that meets at Washington Cathedral, and said his church began in a community cabana at an apartment complex in Woodinville. So joining the Redmond campus has allowed The Vine to grow. “To be here for us is very good,” Godoi said. “We love to be here… It’s not all because of the building. It’s because of
their hearts (to welcome us).” In addition to religious service, Washington Cathedral also offers a number of fitness activities such as yoga, water aerobics, swimming lessons, open swims, boot camp and cross fit through the Fitness and Faith Northwest program. Fitness classes coordinator Debi Raines said the classes they offer are Christ centered but not everyone who attends is part of the church and all activities are open to the public. “It’s all positive,” she
said about the classes. “It’s all uplifting.” She added that some people who attend the fitness classes begin to attend church service. If Washington Cathedral moves, Diaz said they will find a way to continue with the classes through renting a gym or pool when needed. He added that when the church started, they didn’t have a building and services were held at the old Lake Washington High School. “We had no buildings of our own,” he said, adding that they offered fitness classes back then, as well. Diaz said if they end up moving, they want to stay in the area as they are serving other needs in the community such as help with addiction, divorce, outreach to the homeless and more. “We feel that we’re meeting needs here,” he said. Diaz added that in the case of a move, Washington Cathedral will work with the other congregations and organizations in finding a new location. “We feel we’re a family,” he said.

Michelle took the microphone to discuss the many local cancer survivors before they walked a lap — led by the Redmond High cheer squad — before the teams began their trek. Giving a nod to the American Cancer Society’s 100th anniversary this year, Michelle noted about the survivors, who told the crowd their names and how many years they’ve been cancer-free (the years ranged from one to 20plus): “You can see from the beginning to the end of the line, how far we’ve come.” “Relay for Life is the signature fund-raising activity for the American Cancer Society and honors cancer survivors, anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer and remembers those lost to the disease,” Redmond City Council member Pat Vache added about the American Cancer Society’s mission while reading a proclamation signed by Redmond Mayor John Marchione and Kirkland Mayor Joan McBride. Money raised helps support research, education, advocacy and patient services. “It’s an important event, and I like the (American Cancer Society’s) whole idea of the ‘24 hours because cancer never sleeps.’ That’s a great notion to get across,” Vache told the Reporter later during the event. Pacific Lutheran University men’s basketball head coach Steve Dickerson has announced the addition of Redmond High’s Kyle Sawtell and six other players to the Lutes’ program for the start of the 2013-14 season. Sawtell, a 6-foot-3 wing, averaged 17.5 points and six rebounds per game last season. The third-leading scorer in the 4A Kingco, he earned honorable mention all-league honors as both a junior and senior. “Kyle is a scorer with unlimited 3-point range, and he wants the ball with the game on the line,” Dickerson said. “Because of his strength, he is a scoring threat from anywhere on the floor, and coupled with his enthusiasm, he can become a top-notch defender.” Pacific Lutheran University is located in Tacoma.

Crunch, munch, dip, dunk, sip and savor. We are a nation of snack fanatics. In fact, in a national survey among moms conducted by California Raisins, half said their kids enjoy at least one to two snacks each day, with another 44 percent indicating snacks are the norm for their kids three to four times each day. Among those surveyed, the go/nogo on what snacks make it into the cart boils down to if they consider it healthy and the ultimate test: a thumbs up or down from their child. California Raisins are a great choice for that sought-after intersection of healthy snacking and happy kids. Naturally dried-by-the-sun, this fat-
free, no-sugar-added versatile fruit adds a delicious burst of sweetness on its own or as an addition to favorite snacks. “As a busy full-time working mom of three young kids, I’m always looking for convenient and healthy snacks for my children,” said Laura Fuentes, California Raisin blogger ambassador and founder of Momables, a company dedicated to helping parents create healthy school lunches. “California Raisins are a great choice for wholesome, on-the-go snacking, and I make them a key ingredient in many of my homemade baked goods.” Raisins are a great value, too. They’re ranked as the most economical dried fruit by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Ingredients: • Two cups natural or golden raisins • One small pear, peeled and cut into pieces • Two cups water • Three teaspoons cinnamon Instructions: 1. Bring two cups of water to boil. 2. Meantime, place raisins and diced pear inside a large bowl. 3. Once water boils, pour inside the bowl. With a fork, mix ingredients around, and wait 20 minutes for raisins to plump up. 4. Using a one-cup measuring cup, remove three-fourths cup of liquid. Add cinnamon, and mix ingredients around. 5. Carefully pour cinnamon-plumped fruit and liquid inside a blender or food processor, and blend well until it becomes a paste or thick puree. 6. Preheat oven to 200 degrees F. 7. Pour half the mixture onto a parchment paper-
lined cookie sheet. Spread it thinly on first sheet with the back of a spoon. You might need to add more to cover entire baking sheet. Less is more here. Pour remaining mixture onto a second sheet. 8. Bake in mid to lower parts of your oven for two and half to three hours. This is one recipe that is OK to open up the oven to check for doneness. After two and a half hours, check every 15-20 minutes. You are looking for the fruit to peel away easily from the parchment, and has become dehydrated. Oven temperatures and cooking times will vary, so keep an eye on these after two and a half hours. 9. When done, remove from oven and allow to cool. Using scissors, cut into one-inch strips across your pan. It will be sticky. Roll them up and store in an airtight container for up to two weeks (if they last that long).

Families are always looking for their next great vacation. And with recent studies showing that dads are more involved in the family vacation planning than before, Father’s Day (June 16) is the perfect time to pack up the car and let him determine the final destination. to save on expenses. Forty-three percent of dads want to spend less than $300 per day on travel, accommodations and entertainment while on a vacation, according to a new Research Now survey commissioned by Great Wolf Lodge. And 55 percent of dads prefer traveling by car, with 45 percent wanting to travel a distance that is two to five hours away, according to the survey. “When looking for our next affordable summer travel destination, I like to begin with places that are within driving distance,” said Dave Parfitt, founder of Adventures-
byDaddy.com, a nationally known family travel website. “It is often easy to forget how many great destinations, like Great Wolf Lodge, are within a two- to threehour drive from home. Plus, without the cost of airfare, families can stretch their vacation budget a little further.” Here are some tips for easy travel close to home:

PICK THE RIGHT PLACE
When taking a family vacation, kids are dad’s top priority. The best way to make a family vacation great is to visit a destination that includes activities children find fun and entertaining. Eighty-nine percent of dads say this is extremely or very important, according to the survey. One type of destination that fits this bill is an indoor water park resort, like Great Wolf Lodge, which has 11 locations throughout North America, including one in Centralia. Each resort features fun activities for kids and adults, including waterslides and attractions, interactive experiences like MagiQuest, the Scooops Kid Spa and more. And since the resorts’ water parks are indoors, families don’t have to worry that a summer shower or cold snap will ruin their travel plans. Microsoft Corp. has announced Chip In, a new seasonal buying program to help students get the Windows PC or tablet they need for school. With Chip In, students crowdsource contributions from friends and family toward the purchase of a new Windows PC or tablet. Microsoft will chip in 10 percent of the purchase price on select PCs, and the first 10,000 students to fully fund their PC will also get a four-year subscription to Office 365 University. “We know that heading to college is one of the top reasons students
buy a new PC — it’s a powerful tool to support their education and stay in touch with their families and friends,” said Kristina Libby, head of Consumer Communications for Windows. “With Chip In from Microsoft, students can leverage the power of their social networks to help them get a new PC and Office 365 University this back-to-school season.” Students can participate in Chip In exclusively at http:// www.windowschipin. com. Participating students choose from a wide range of quali-
fied Windows 8 PCs and tablets and create a “giving page.” Then they can share their page with friends and family via social media or email to ask for contributions in any amount up to the total cost of the PC. The first 10,000 students to fully fund their PC before Sept. 1 will also get a four-year subscription of Office 365 University. The subscription gives students the latest, most complete Office applications (which can be downloaded on up to two devices), 20 GB of additional SkyDrive storage and 60 Skype world minutes.
