Seniors tapped into community service, math and drama

Both 17-year-old students will receive their diplomas on June 17 at KeyArena in Seattle and are the Redmond Reporter’s featured Mustang graduates this issue. Anderle (3.8 grade-point average) will next attend the University of Washington and major in chemical engineering, and Martinez (3.2 GPA) will first head to Bellevue College and then transfer to UW to major in communications and hopes to eventually produce fashion shows. “I did a lot of outreach to organize and present events. I really enjoyed working with people. I wanted to make a difference in the community,” Martinez said of interacting

“Two-hundred hours … Wow, that’s a lot,” Carlos Martinez said as he leaned back in his chair and glanced at fellow Redmond High senior Athena Anderle on Tuesday afternoon. Martinez was floored by Anderle’s amount of community service hours, time spent volunteering at City of Redmond events like the Centennial Bonfire and Eggstravaganza. She was also involved with the Redmond Nourishing Network, an organization that aims to stamp out hunger for some students in the Lake Washington School District. Martinez made an impact as two-year president of the Latinos Unidos Club and organized Cinco De Mayo and Dia de los

In addition to performing community service, Anderle was Redmond High’s Key Club vice president and Associated Student Body treasurer. She didn’t just attend classes and head home afterward, she was dedicated to “branching out and being a more independent and confident person for the future,” she said. Anderle also job-shadowed her aunt at Acucela, a medical company focused on finding a cure for age-related macular degeneration, the largest cause of visual loss for people over age 50. they issued 48 citations — 46 for cell phone/ texting violations and two for seat belts — from 4:30-8:30 p.m., according to Jim Bove, RPD’s community outreach facilitator. “The cell phone issue continues to be a huge problem. We recommend people just putting their phone in the trunk. That way drivers aren’t even tempted to talk on the phone or text,” Bove said.
By learning from her aunt, Anderle was able to “do something that was pretty important for me and the people around me. They’re making something that could help people.” Anderle and Martinez don’t know exactly what awaits outside of the Redmond High halls they’ve called home for the last three years. Things are going to be different, they say, and they’re looking forward to building new communities of friends in the classroom and beyond.

Microsoft denies participation in PRISM A June 6 story in the Washington Post has noted Microsoft as the “first partner” in PRISM, a National Security Agency and FBI program that involves tapping directly into the central servers of the Redmond company and eight other leading U.S. Internet companies. The program involves “extracting audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track foreign targets.” The Post obtained a top-secret document and wrote that the code-name PRISM program has just now been made public.
According to Microsoft’s website news center on June 6, officials say they provide customer data only when they receive a legally binding order or subpoena to do so, and never on a voluntary basis. “In addition we only ever comply with orders for requests about specific accounts or identifiers. If the government has a broader voluntary national security program to gather customer data we don’t participate in it,” the news release concludes. Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper wrote in a statement on his office’s website on
June 6 that “information collected under this program is among the most important and valuable foreign intelligence information we collect, and is used to protect our nation from a wide variety of threats. “The unauthorized disclosure of information about this important and entirely legal program is reprehensible and risks important protections for the security of Americans.” Yahoo!, Facebook, Google, Apple and Dropbox have also denied involvement in PRISM, according to statements on their websites.

a Washington Traffic Safety Commission grant. “This is a really important issue, not just with our police departments but with the community. They want people to be held accountable for behind-the-wheel cell phone use,” said Annie Kirk, King County Target Zero manager. “People don’t always make the best decisions, so officers give them a reminder
why that’s important,” Kirk added. “We did have a large number of citations, but officers also saw a lot of people who were being safe in their cars.” Kirk noted that officers see a lot of cell phone use in Redmond, and the city will be participating in another King County campaign focusing on cell phonedistraction enforcement in late June and in August.
Statewide during the patrols, officers from more than 130 police and sheriff agencies wrote 2,321 seat belt violations and 1,448 cell phone/texting tickets. Last year, during this same time period, officers on the extra patrols statewide issued 3,171 seat belt violations and 1,059 cell phone violations. The program is funded by

Legislators need to compromise as government shutdown looms Special times often call for Special Sessions. But a little history first. The Legislature finished on time without a special session in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and even 2009 at the beginning of the worst budget crisis in state history. As the global economic crisis deepened, we had special sessions in 2010, 2011 and 2012 during which we cut our budget by more than $12 billion. Those cuts hurt. They hurt seniors, put college tuition out of reach for middle class families, cut funding for prisons and slashed money of parks. Yet we got through those years because Republicans worked with Democrats. We all understood compromise is the bedrock of our democracy. Neither side got all it wanted. It was hard but we did it, because that’s our job. Sadly, not so this year. We are actually facing a possible government shutdown on July 1, something that has never happened in the 124 years of statehood. So why now? Because Senate Republicans have refused to compromise, something I have never seen before. The Supreme Court has ordered the Legislature to dramatically increase education funding. Yet Senate Republicans are refusing to compromise on a budget unless we agree to non-budget related, ideologically driven policy bills like Rep. Larry Springer

workers compensation, toxic cleanup, teacher hiring/firing and pay day lending. As a moderate, pro-business Democrat, I even agree with some of these policy bills, but they are a distraction from the job in front of us. House Democrats recognize this and we have agreed to forgo any further consideration of our set of policy bills. I hope my colleagues in the Senate will see their way to doing the same. Call me naïve, but I think the citizens of Washington state want a budget passed. Policy bills can be debated again next year. Legislators were elected to lead Washington state, all of it, not just their party’s political agenda.

Seniors support shuttle service Thank you for the very nice article in the June 7 Redmond Reporter. Being an aging Redmond shopper, having the shuttle service, as explained in the Reporter, would make it possible to continue my shopping in Redmond as I soon will discontinue my driving. Currently, disabled seniors cannot walk the distance from the bus to the facility they need to get to, be it health, shopping or other needs. I definitely support the resolution for a separate shuttle for downtown Redmond.
Virginia Musgrave, Redmond
• I think a shuttle for seniors and all others in Redmond would be better than relying on the municipal bus. Their schedules are subject to being budget-cut, they do not run a pattern route that will aid citizens without cars, stopping points are not what are needed to provide service to our folks both young and old. If you have to do two tasks, the wait time is too great to accomplish both
in one day in a reasonable time. I participated in the city bus demo for seniors — I would not call this dependable, reasonable or timely transportation. I strongly support a resolution for a separate shuttle bus for downtown Redmond.

Helmet safety day was successful Thanks again for announcing the Bicycle Helmet Safety Day this year. We gave away and properly fitted 250 helmets on the kids in our community. Many of the families mentioned they had seen the article you printed in the Reporter and that was the reason they had come in. If not for your generosity and willingness to help get the word out, our outreach event would not have helped as many kids be safe this summer.
Dr. Eric Hansen, Redmond
I’ve been here nine years, had many tough debates, some very emotional, made compromises, and with my Democratic and Republican colleagues always left at the end of session proud of the work we did together. Never has the specter of a government shutdown been a consideration. It does not have to be this way. We are Washington state, not Washington, D.C. — let’s find common ground, compromise and get our job done.
Rep. Larry Springer represents Redmond’s 45th Legislative District. He is the deputy majority leader of the House Democratic Caucus.
EDITORIAL
Supreme Court decision on DNA will make society safer Fingerprints are an essential tool in law enforcement. If you’re arrested for a serious crime, a technician rolls ink on your fingers and presses an image onto paper. You don’t get a say in the matter. The reason is that the prints not only can link a person to a crime under investigation, but also other crimes committed elsewhere. Last week, the US Supreme Court gave law enforcement an even better tool to do its job: DNA samples. As other commentators have said about the decision, it’s a “thumbs up” for public safety. While fingerprints are an excellent means of identification, there is a problem. Surgery that causes deep scarring or diseases such as leprosy can damage the ridges of skin that make the prints. DNA can’t be changed.
The Supreme Court decision wasn’t unanimous, but on a 5-4 vote with the majority seeing the procedure as a logical extension of fingerprints. Opponents see the decision as allowing unwarranted search of a person and a step toward DNA being used for reasons beyond law enforcement. The Maryland law under consideration by the court is clear that the DNA is to be used for identification only. Everyone’s DNA history is not going to become part of a database. The courts have the power to contain the use of DNA. Allowing it to help solve crimes and catch criminals is a logical extension of the use of fingerprints and will make society safer.

School district, education association agree on new contract The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) and the Lake Washington Education Association (LWEA) have agreed to a new contract for the next four years, the 2013-14 through 2016-17 school years. The contract was ratified by 96.8 percent of the members of the LWEA in an online vote that concluded on May 29. The Lake Washington School District Board of Directors voted to approve the new contract on June 3 at its regular board meeting. As part of the contract, the two organizations nego-
tiated the school calendar for the next five years, which will follow a similar pattern to the district’s current calendar. The two organizations used an interest-based bargaining process, which involves a joint problemsolving approach. “We all have the same goal of educating students, and we work best when we work together to that end,” noted Dr. Traci Pierce. “The result has been a contract that meets the shared interests of both parties.” “We appreciate the openness of the district
to listening and exploring issues that are important to teachers and help them to do their best work,” said Kevin Teeley, president of the LWEA. “This contract shows the district’s respect for teachers as professionals and a commitment to collaboration.” Highlights of the contract related to compensation include eliminating extra unpaid days that teachers worked in lieu of a 1.9 percent pay cut instituted by the state in the 2010-11 school year. Teachers will have one additional paid training day in August, for
a total of five, plus three full days for training during the school year. Teachers also will get a 2 percent salary increase, the first increase since the 2008-09 school year. Teachers will get an additional increase of 2 percent in 2014-15. The details of a new state-mandated, fourtiered teacher professional growth and evaluation system, which now includes student-growth measures, were also negotiated as part of the agreement. While the district has had a fourtiered professional growth and evaluation model in
place for many years, the new agreement fully aligns the system with new state law. The school year calendar is also developed through the bargaining process. The LWEA asked for input from its members while the LWSD surveyed parents. Surveys asked teachers and parents about their calendar preferences, and results from both surveys helped to inform the development of the calendar for the next five years. The result is a calendar that is similar to current patterns: • In most years, school
will start the day after Labor Day in September • Mid-winter break will remain in place, following the current pattern of two days off plus the Presidents Day long weekend • Spring break will remain one week • Early release will remain on Wednesdays Copies of the school calendars, together with parent survey results and explanation, are posted online at http://www.lwsd. org/About/Pages/DistrictCalendar.aspx (or go to www.lwsd.org then click on School Calendar).
LINKS volunteers honored at annual reception Lake Washington School District’s LINKS (Looking Into the Needs of Kids and Schools) program honored many of its 275 volunteers at the annual volunteer reception on June 7. Guests were welcomed by the sound of Redmond Elementary students singing Dr. Seuss and volunteer-related songs with the guidance of music teacher Laurie Moody. Lake Washington School District Associate Superintendent Heather Sinclair spoke about the value of volunteers in schools and emphasized how each volunteer contributes in their own special way. Volunteers were treated to lunch and had the opportunity to share their
experiences with others who have the same passion for helping student succeed. Local businesses generously donated gift certificates and product for a raffle drawing as a way to show appreciation to LINKS volunteers. They were: Agave Restaurant, Brown Bear Car Wash, Heavy Restaurant Group, JJ Mahoney’s Irish Pub, Mod Pizza, QFC, Redmond Bar and Grill, Tech City Bowl, Trader Joes and Trellis Restaurant. Combined, volunteers shared 6,649 hours of their time to make a difference in students’ overall experience in school. While some volunteers helped in a classroom, others were academic mentors, tutors
and Lunch Buddies. Each assignment helps a student academically or socially and can often boost their self esteem and confidence. In many cases it also improves their overall attitude about school. LINKS is a volunteer program of Lake Washington School District with generous funding provided by the Lake Washington Schools Foundation. To learn more about the foundation, visit www. lwsf.org. Evergreen Middle School says farewell to staff members JOE WILSON Special to the Reporter
The walls of Evergreen Middle School counselor Barbara Gregory’s office are covered in pictures of students; a collage of laughter and friendships tells a story of her last 15 years at the school. Gregory, along with language arts and social studies teacher Kathie May, will retire from Evergreen at the end of the school year. Gregory beams as she describes her life at the local middle school. “It’s always bustling here,” she laughed, “there’s never a boring hour.” Gregory came to Evergreen from Juanita High School after working as a school counselor there for 15 years. When she began at Evergreen, Gregory started a multicultural club — a place for students of any background to come together and meet friends. Framed photographs of field trips taken with the

[ GRADUATES from page 1] on the Redmond campus and their plans after graduation, which will take place tomorrow at the First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue. Helton and Lee both attribute the sense of community at the small Christian school to making them who they are today. Here’s the lowdown on the soft-spoken 18-year-olds: Helton is involved in student leadership and drama and will study international relations at Boston University; Lee is a National Merit finalist and will study his beloved math at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif. “Getting to know the faculty and students kind of pushed me out there,” Helton said of getting involved at school. On the leadership front, she’s learned to “give opinions and not be scared of getting shot down.” Helton, who sports a 3.85 GPA, said that by being involved in drama she’s learned that everyone’s important, whether it’s the star of the play or the students behind the scenes. She’s performed on stage and taken on the role of assistant stage manager during her four years at Bear Creek. As assistant stage manager, Helton thrives when it comes time to “take charge and make sure things get done and that every-
to take part,” said special-education teacher Suzanne Swanigan. “No kid goes without under Barbara’s watch.” Down the hall, May’s classroom is also splashed wall to wall with memories. Maps, charts and American history posters hang on the walls of her “home away
body does their best.” She plans to stay involved in the theater realm at Boston University. Lee arrived at Bear Creek six years ago after his family moved to America from Korea. At first, he didn’t speak much English, but communicated with people through math problems, he said. That bond with students and teachers soon grew when he became accustomed to the American culture and language. “I gained confidence from that,” said Lee, who has a 3.97 GPA. “People have sincerely welcomed me and I’m a completely different person.” He’s also helping other Koreans adjust to American life as a teacher’s assistant at the United Seattle Korean School in Shoreline. On branching out from his first American home and attending college in California, Lee added: “I’m a little nervous, but I’m excited.” Less than a week prior to graduation, Helton buzzed about the “insane” bond that the seniors possess. “I’ve learned to value the people around you and the community,” she said.
(Redmond’s Overlake School declined to participate in the senior spotlight because school officials didn’t want to single out individual graduates.)
from home.” “The kids make it all worth it,” she said about her experience as a teacher for four years at Evergreen. “It’s different every day; I laugh every day.” While May has only spent four years at Evergreen, she’s been in the Lake Washington School
District teaching literature and social studies for 30. “It’s rewarding to see kids grow and change, learn to write more effectively and gain a love of literature. Not everyone learns in the same way, and you have to learn about every individual student through patience and flexibility,” she said. Their plans for life after Evergreen? Gregory looks forward to spending time with her grandchildren — one born this year, and one more on the way. May won’t be giving up the school entirely as she plans to substitute teach after she leaves. Her free time is already packed with things to do. “I want to learn a foreign language, take piano lessons. I want to run, I want to garden, I want to read!” May said. Both are sad to go, however, and as May looks around her classroom she admits she’ll miss her home here.
Some of her classroom decorations have already come down, and the realization that her time at Evergreen is over hits as she begins to pull the posters off the wall. Gregory, too, anticipates the end of her school counseling career as she looks up at the walls of her office. “I’m definitely going to be sad,” Gregory said as she tears up while reflecting on her departure, “the staff and the kids here are wonderful.” Neither will be forgotten. Fellow staff members recall fond memories of working with both Gregory and May in their final months as faculty members at Evergreen. Even the middle school students will not forget. Every fall, May’s students memorize “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. When they come back to visit from high school and college, they can still recite the poem from memory, she said.
Overlake School graduates 66 seniors
Sixty-six seniors graduated from The Overlake School in Redmond on June 9 at the school. Serious About Fitness hosts 8K walk/run to benefit Hopelink JOE WILSON Special to the Reporter
Participants in the Serious About Fitness 8K Block Party gathered at Luke McRedmond Landing on June 2 to kick off the eight-kilometer run/walk along the Sammamish River Trail to the Redhook Brewery in Woodinville. The grassy venue next to the trail offered the perfect place for the first of four challenges in a series of fitness exercises along the 8K path. Chris Doran, personal trainer, co-owner of Serious About Fitness and event organizer, kicked off the race by thanking sponsors and acknowledging the purpose of the event: “The end goal is to benefit Hopelink.” Last year, the event raised more than $10,000 for the King County-based nonprofit organization, which serves local families and children who are hungry or homeless. (This year’s amount was not available at press time.) The event began with a block party at the park; participants stretched and chatted as music played and volunteers set up an obstacle course on the lawn — the first of four challenges to complete before the finish line. Along the Sammamish Trail, the challenges required participants to do push ups, squats and bench hops, push picnic tables and even flip tires. Said Doran, “It’s more than a run, it’s an hour and 15 minutes of a killer workout.” More than 40 runners, joggers and walkers of all ages took on the almost-five-mile challenge to Woodinville, before enjoying a finish-line celebration at Redhook. Even mothers pushing their children in strollers participated. To participate in the next SAF 8K Block Party on Aug. 18, register at www.seriousaboutfitness.net/ events. The $50 registration fee benefits underprivileged families through Hopelink.

Mayor supports Audubon art walk
On May 29, Redmond Mayor John Marchione accompanied Audubon Elementary School’s Art Docents and students for a preview of their International Night art work titled, “How & Why Stories: Folktales from Around the World.” The art walk is part of the school’s annual International Night, which celebrates the rich diversity of the student population through family-hosted country tables, performances and sporting demonstrations. Using special passports designed for the evening, visitors to Audubon’s International Night explored student art work that references art techniques and cultures ranging from Alaska to Australia. The mayor learned how visitors of all ages could interact with each art display, exploring flipbooks and panels describing the folktales and art styles, and then use what they learned to solve a fun meta puzzle in their passports. The art walk showcases the artistic imagination of the students and the vitality and importance of the monthly parent-led art classes where students learn art vocabulary, art techniques, creative problem solving, interdisciplinary

It’s unfortunate, but true: The elderly population may be the most vulnerable group in our society. In fact, in an effort to call attention to the problems of physical, emotional and financial abuse of the elderly, the United Nations has designated June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. If you have older parents, or even grandparents, can you do anything to help prevent them from being victimized, especially with regard to their finances? Actually, there’s a lot you can do. First and foremost, you need to maintain good communications and a trusting relationship with your older family members. As long as these elements are present, you should feel free to make the following suggestions: • Increase awareness: When it comes to financial fraud and scams, many seniors think: “It can’t happen to me.” But the facts suggest otherwise: Some 20 percent of Americans over the age of 65 admit to having been victimized by financial swindles, according to a survey by the nonprofit Investor Protection Trust. Let your loved ones know that no one in their age group is immune to financial predators. • Guard private information: Ask your parents or grandparents to not divulge personal information over the phone. In fact, urge them to get caller ID, if they don’t have it already, and tell them that if they don’t recognize the number, don’t answer. Legitimate callers are more likely to leave messages than scammers. • Don’t send money: Exhort your parents or grandparents to never wire money to a random account — no exceptions. • Ignore “limited-time offers”: Your loved ones [ more HALE page 11 ]
June 14, 2013 [11]
www.redmond-reporter.com should ignore callers, mailers or emails that demand they act immediately. These offers are often overblown at best and may be fraudulent at worst. • Don’t trust “no risk” offers: Financial offers that sound too good to be true are likely just that — untrue. Legitimate investments carry both potential risks and rewards. • Avoid “debt-settlement” claims: If your older loved ones have

be less likely to listen to any questionable, unsolicited offers than if they were trying to manage their finances on their own. You’re in a good position to know how much, or how little, help your elderly loved ones may need in terms of avoiding financial abuse. So be willing to do whatev-
er it takes to help them enjoy their retirement years comfortably.

Rotary Club of Redmond supports new ‘This Close’ campaign to fight polio The Rotary Club of Redmond, a longtime supporter of Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide, is also a supporter of the new “This Close” campaign. The club has donated more than $46,000 dollars in the past decade to support Rotary Internation-
al’s efforts to end polio. The current and next club presidents Michael Nichols and Will Miller have now posed for the “This Close” Campaign in the same fashion as have public figures such as Bill Gates and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. In order to encour-
age public support for its effort to eradicate polio, Rotary International welcomed a select group of celebrities and other major public figures into a new public awareness campaign called “This Close.” The campaign is a unique way to promote Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign and its $200 Million Challenge (to match a $355 million polio eradication grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation). These public service announcements emphasize that Rotary is 99 percent toward its goal to
eradicate this crippling childhood disease. The PSAs encourage the public to support the effort to finish off the final one percent. The campaign’s tagline is: “We’re this close to ending polio.” The centerpiece of the campaign is a print advertisement built around the tagline and a portrait photograph of each participant doing the signature “This Close” gesture with their thumb and forefinger, with display type providing the context. Visit thisclose.endpolio.org/en to learn more about the campaign or

Redmond West Junior Red Sox battle from behind to win District 9 crown Redmond West Little League’s Juniors Red Sox won the District 9 regular season championship with a two-out, come-from-behind 9-8 win against league-leading Issaquah in the bottom half of the seventh inning on June 9 at Hartman Park. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Redmond’s Brendan McCormick dropped a single into right field and Nick Miller was hit by an inside pitch to put runners on first and second. Joel Hargin hit into a fielder’s choice, but was able to steal second on the next pitch, putting the tying run in scoring position. David
Gibons then tied the game up with a long single into the gap in left-center field, followed by Tyler Pippin’s triple, a one-hopper to the fence and over the center fielder’s head. Coming from first, Gibons scored the winning run just as the ball was coming in from the relay. Hargin opened the game on the mound for the Red Sox and was relieved by Zach Bothel, who put in five strong innings to get the win. Athlete overcoming Guillain-Barre to compete in triathlon Singh trains at Redmond’s VO2 MultiSport JOSH SUMAN jsuman@bellevuereporter.com
As the director of coaching for the most recognizable triathlon training team in the region, VO2 MultiSport of Redmond, Ben Bigglestone’s clients fall across a broad spectrum of athletic ability and come from varying histories in the sport’s three disciplines — running, swimming and biking. But even for Bigglestone, a longtime veteran of the triathlon lifestyle as a competitor and coach, Navin Singh is unique. Now a 47-year-old Sammamish father, Singh was just out of high school and on the brink of his physical prime when his health took an unexpected and dramatic turn. After returning from a vacation, Singh began feeling flulike symptoms that quickly turned into intense abdominal cramping. When he tried to make his way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, things got worse. “My legs just shut off and I dropped to my knees,” he said. “I made it

in 100,000) where the immune system attacks the nerves and can leave patients paralyzed. “That was a scary moment,” Singh said. “The doctors couldn’t tell me much. They knew it was a long haul, but they couldn’t tell me how long.” The recovery process was indeed a slow one,
starting with sitting upright and eventually getting out of the hospital bed. Singh suffered from severe muscle atrophy throughout his body, leaving his limbs frail and the rest of his body without the necessary strength to even remain rigid. “When I first tried to sit up, I just collapsed,” he

said. “It looked like the skin was just hanging off the bones of my hands.” Singh moved from lying down in the ICU, where he spent six weeks, to sitting up and eventually sitting in a wheelchair. Crutches followed, then forearm crutches and finally a cane. But despite the long, difficult process to get back on his feet, Singh knew early on he wanted to do more than just maintain. While he was in the hospital, Singh watched the Iron Man World Championships from his room and was immediately inspired by their feats. Like traditional triathlons, Iron Man competitions include a run, swim and biking portion to test endurance and overall fitness. The main difference comes in the distances, with a 2.4-mile openwater swim, 112-mile bike ride and a full marathon of 26.2 miles by foot, exponentially longer distances than other triathlon formats. “It was always in the back of my mind,” Singh said of becoming an Iron Man. “I finally realized I had nothing to lose.” Kona, Hawaii will be the site of the Iron Man World Championships on Oct. 12, and while the best triathletes in the world will attempt to earn qualifying times at satellite events, the championships will also play host to “Kona

Inspired,” a video submission contest to earn a spot in the race. This year’s theme, “Anything is Possible,” was a natural segue for Singh (view Singh’s video at konainspired. thismoment.com). After falling into what he called, “the typical suburban dad routine,” which did not include a lot of exercise, Singh connected with Bigglestone and VO2 to begin training. Even with Singh’s medical history, Bigglestone was adamant he could make his dream of completing an Iron Man attainable. “I knew we would face some challenges we wouldn’t face with someone who had full function of their lower legs,” Bigglestone said. “I had to find out where we were and where we wanted to travel.” The initial meetings included formulating a plan for getting Singh, self-described as out of shape at the time, into condition to complete the triathlon The two have focused on building the biking and swimming skills and endurance of Singh in the saddle and pool, and using alternative technology like an Alter-G treadmill to work to the goal of completing the final marathon leg. “He’s arguably one of the most dedicated athletes I have in my roster,” Bigglestone said, adding VO2 is home to professional-level triathletes. “His willingness to put himself in that position of discomfort is probably, because of what he’s been through, higher than most people.” Whether or not his video submission earns him one of the seven available entries, Singh wants his message of perseverance to be his lasting image. “If I can do this,” Singh said. “Anyone can.”
