Miners memorial unveiled in Black Diamond By Dennis Box

fter years of planning and hard work the Black Diamond Coal Miners Memorial was unveiled Saturday during the city’s Miners Day celebration. The honor garden memorial includes a 13-foot bronze statue sculpted by Ellensburg artist Paul Crites and a 28-foot granite wall, engraved with the names of miners who have died in mines throughout Washington state. Engraved bricks are at the base of the statue and wall. Surrounding the memorial and historical museum is a landscaped garden. According to Black Diamond
Historical Society President Keith Watson, the idea for the memorial began years ago, but started in earnest about two years ago when he and former Black Diamond Mayor Howard Botts and their wives made a trip to Roslyn, Wash. They saw a Roslyn coal miners memorial and that was the inspiration. “That is what we wanted to do but we wanted it to cover the entire state,” Watson said. Watson said a large donation in the beginning and volunteers
from around the region brought the vision to life, “It’s amazing how everything fit together,” Watson said. “The number of volunteers that stepped up to the plate, it was amazing.” Watson gave an example of a Black Diamond woman, 94-year-old Katherine Daniels, who did the flower gardens for the memorial and donated a deer statue. “She is probably there today,” Watson said Monday.
Former Mayor Gomer Evans Jr., a lifelong Black Diamond resident, was another of the guiding forces behind the project. Evans’ father was a fire boss in the mines. At the unveiling ceremony Evans told the story of how his parents met, married and raised a family of nine children in Black Diamond. His father came to America from Wales in 1910. The senior Evans was promoted to fire boss when he was 18. The fire boss was the first worker to enter the mines at the beginning of the shift and ensure it was safe. Evans said his parents met and married in 1916. His father was living in a “single men hotel, the

The King County Fair takes over the Enumclaw Expo Center grounds this week, starting its four-day run at noon Thursday. The fair will again be operated by Universal Fairs, the Tennessee-based organization that breathed new life into a floundering enterprise. After King County systematically diminished the fair and finally sliced funding altogether, the city of Enumclaw made a oneyear stab at offering a summer attraction. Universal Fairs offers its Enumclaw attraction for the third year. As usual, the fair will feature carnival rides and a midway, plenty of food vendors, a commercial building filled with vendors hawking everything from

Edward Saylor inducted into Enumclaw Walk of Fame A hefty plaque bearing the name of Edward Saylor will soon be added to Enumclaw’s Walk of Fame, joining a short list of the city’s highly-accomplished. Saylor was formally inducted into the Walk of Fame during a Fourth of July ceremony at City Hall. The ceremony, presided over by Mayor Liz Reynolds and featuring comments by Al Zarb, commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, included Saylor receiving a ceremonial key to the city. In 1942 Saylor was just a few years out of high school and a member of the U.S. Army when he volunteered for a secret project headed by Jimmy Doolittle. It

kids 5 to 12 years of age, with children 4 and younger admitted free. A family pass – two adults, two children and two allday ride wristbands – are available online.

Paul Crites, was present at the ceremony. Watson said Crites came up with the idea of changing the patina to black on the bronze sculpture, because miners were always covered in coal dust in the mines. Crites started as a car-
toonist more than 40 years ago for Western Horseman and other magazines. He also worked as a logger and miner through the years, which has inspired his art. “It’s all part and parcel of what I do,” Crites said. Now that the memorial is complete, Evans’ next project is to restore the
town’s first fire engine, a 1947 Ford that was headed for the scrap heap. The memorial event drew a large crowd that included Mayor Becky Olness, Covington Mayor Margaret Harto, Black Diamond City Council members Janie Edelman and Carol Benson, Botts and Dino Rossi.

FIREWORKS: Police were kept busy July 4, dealing with fireworks. At 10 p.m. they responded to a Stevenson Avenue address to assist medical personnel with a person who had sustained injuries from fireworks. Later in the evening, police were telling people to stop for the night. In at least a dozen instances, police confiscated illegal fireworks. ASSAULT: Police hear of a disturbance at Sunrise Elementary School at 10:30 p.m. July 4. Two male subjects were arrested and booked for fourthdegree assault. ACCIDENT ASSIST: Police responded the afternoon of July 4 to a location on Southeast 416th Street to assist medical personnel and King County deputies at the scene of an automobile accident involving injuries. RESIDENT CONCERNED: Police took a report the evening of July 4 about two men entering a Harmony Lane home without knocking, surprising the homeowner. Further investigation showed the men hadn’t entered the residence, but the homeowner remained concerned about their actions. The subjects were counseled and released. NO CAMPING: Police learned July 3 of a man and woman sleeping overnight in a vehicle parked on Battersby Avenue. The woman had sought treatment at St. Elizabeth Hospital and was difficult with staff. Both subjects were advised against camping in the
parking lot. Because neither the man nor the woman were licensed to drive, they were advised to find a licensed driver to move their vehicle. DRUNK DRIVER: Police were told at 1:15 a.m. July 3 of someone yelling about being drunk and driving. An officer located the car and arrested the driver for being under the influence. The suspect was taken to the police station for booking and the vehicle was impounded. VICTIM NOT TALKING: An officer was told at 10:30 p.m. July 2 of a possible assault victim at the Forest Service building on Roosevelt Avenue. The subject would not provide any information relating to any type of assault. Medical aid responded and the subject was provided transportation to his home. TO BE EVALUATED: A female was seen walking in the middle of Myrtine Street at 6 a.m. July 2. She was contacted and later taken by emergency medical personnel to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where she was to be evaluated. MISSING PERSON: An Enumclaw mother reported her son missing July 1. The juvenile was last seen at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo. Both Seattle and Enumclaw authorities were alerted. CASH TAKEN: A cash drawer was reportedly taken from a Griffin Avenue hotel. Police were notified at 3:35 a.m. July 1. PURSE STOLEN: Police were told at 5 p.m. July 1 a purse was taken

FAMILY DISPUTE: Police responded to a Schmid Street address the evening of July 1 after hearing of a family dispute that was resulting in property damage. When officers arrived an adult son had left the residence and his father declined police involvement. FAMILY ADVISED: Police were called July 1 to a Griffin Avenue location where a male was on the ground in front of a business. Medical aid was declined and an officer provided transportation. The subject and his mother were counseled about the male’s alcohol consumption. OUT OF CONTROL: Police responded to St. Elizabeth Hospital at 12:35 a.m. June 30 following a report of an out-of-control patient. The subject was treated and released and the trouble was settled upon police contact. EXPLOSION: A Marion Street resident notified police the evening of June 30 of an explosion that shook windows in the area. An officer found nothing out of the ordinary in the surrounding area. I fertilized the plant, the buds fell off! I used a 20-2020 plant food that I also use on my fuchsias. (my fuchsias are fine so I know I did not mix it up the plant food incorrectly.) Here we go with another round of election races. This one probably will not draw the heavyweight fight crowd like the presidential battle of 2012, but there always are a few intriguing races and initiatives to watch. After covering political races for longer than I care to admit, I still try to follow one rule. I never call a race before the votes are counted. I often have a sense how a race will break, but I have been sucker punched enough to give up the practice of reading birdie inners to predict the future. I do believe when the voters of our country pay attention to a race, usually the best choice is made, although I may not Dennis Box agree with it at the Editor time. Often when I look back it makes more sense, or it is at least understandable why the voters made a choice that seems goofy. Sometimes it is goofy and I think that is usually a lack of paying attention or worse, paying attention to self-appointed arm wavers with the world’s best interest at heart. My advice is to check the facts and figures of anyone, candidate or campaigner. Many of the most shrill like to hold a candidate to the truth, but their hair catches on fire when someone challenges their tilted universe of truth. Truth can be a moving target in campaigns. Elections are about paying attention and critical thinking by voters. It is a responsibility and certainly eating s’mores and sauerkraut is probably more fun. The political arena can be an unfamiliar environment for many. Candidates run with notions of community service dancing in their heads and suddenly they are nailed between the eyes with a hostile campaign. It can be a shock to the system. Most candidates I have covered run for pretty good reasons. They really do want to help build a community. Sometimes, I admit, when I hear a candidate’s vision of building the community I want to hit myself in the head with a big rock. That comes from too many campaigns and too many arm wavers with fiery hair. Ronald Reagan was correct about one thing: “Trust but verify” – although I probably fall into the category of “don’t believe anything until it is verified” and even then be careful.
The most important mayoral election in the city’s history is coming up soon in Black Diamond. The big issue is YarrowBay’s massive development. Dave Gordon is the candidate who will do the best at prevent-

business. He is willing to stand up to YarrowBay. Other cities have done it and Black Diamond should also. Dave Gordon will not fall for false promises and or mislead us with optimistic tax revenue projections from new growth. He will do his utmost best to control growth responsibly. Modern tale of trash, treasure Did you ever wonder what became of all the aluminum cans, scrap paper and plastic containers you faithfully recycle every two weeks? It turns out that, according to a June 19, 2013, Christian Science Monitor article by Peter Ford, “China Puts up a Green Wall to U.S. Trash,” 75 percent of the aluminum, 60 percent of the paper and 50 percent of the plastic you put in the recycle bin ends up in China. At least until February of this year. This “Green Fence” – blocking 20 percent of U.S. shipments and sending them back – is going to affect the U.S. and Europe. We’re going to have to adjust our habits as a result. Sending China our recyclable trash has turned out to be the U.S.’ biggest export at $11.3 billion in 2011 with 23 million tons of scrap. China is resource poor and it needs the recycled plastic to make clothes and the scrap metal is turned into machines. The problem is that about 20 percent of the trash the Chinese receive is unusable and then has to be burned or buried – polluting the land and rivers with toxic runoff and the air with noxious smoke. “The Green Fence” is what the

Chinese call the newly enforced law to stop the import of dirty, unusable trash it receives. Part of the reason for importing this U.S. and European scrap is because China pays its workers only about $15 a day to process the recycling. Since China exports more than it imports from the U.S., it needs something to fill the holds of its ships returning from the U.S. West Coast. Shipping prices to China are lower than shipping scrap metal to the Midwest by rail. The result of the Green Fence has been to raise the price of metals and plastics in China and to force U.S. recyclers to deal with more of our own scrap – to bury more of our plastic, or clean up the recyclables we send to China, or all three, so there is less unusable trash.
Environmentalists are pleased with the Green Fence because it will force American recyclers to become more creative and the American public to be more careful with its recycling. In other words, we’re being stopped from “kicking the can (the paper, and plastics) down the road” to China. We’ll have to pay what economists call, “the real cost” of our pollution and trash. This should create more businesses and industries in this country to cope with the changes. We’ll have to become better at green technology. Other countries will buy our superior technology and we will become a leader in the field as China has done with solar panels. If we can create better methods of recycling, the planet will be cleaner and we’ll quit the practice of what economists call “moral hazard” – doing whatever we want because we don’t have to suffer the consequences of what we do. It seems the garage sale adage applies: “What is one man’s trash is another’s treasure.” Perhaps the Chinese Green Fence will force the whole world to change its habits, benefiting us all.
Spilling the beans on caffeine Like many of you, I enjoy coffee in the morning to help me wake up. Sometimes in the early afternoon I’ll have a second cup to perk up my fading energy. And, finally, again like many of you, another swallow or two to ward off the lethargic feeling after a heavy evening meal. Owing to the effects these rituals have on us, you probably realize caffeine is a stimulant, but you may not generally classify it with cocaine, Dexedrine and methamphetamine. But medical science does. Needless to say, caffeine isn’t nearly as powerful as these sister drugs, but its physical and psychological effects are very similar. In our brains, caffeine acts to block the neurotransmitters that tell us when we’re tired. This creates a feeling of renewed energy and alertness. In fact, it’s more than just a

“feeling” – emotions can be deceiving – because there’s considerable research to indicate that the drug actually does improve vigilance and reaction time. Large doses of caffeine also seem to improve the endurance of athletes. Caffeine, like its sister drugs, is addictive, which many of us realize when we miss the cup we always consume at a particular time of day. (In my particular case, I notice the hook whenever I’m near an espresso
bar or a latté of almost any flavor.) It’s also a diuretic and can cause dehydration. Worse of all, in rare cases of a severe overdose, it can kill you, typically by stopping your heart. This fact received considerable publicity a few years ago when some misguided fellows at a frat party drank several cans of Red Bull accompanied by shots of vodka. Of course, we find caffeine in many products besides coffee. It’s been in soft drinks, like Coke and Pepsi, ever since the late 1800s. However, in recent years, caffeine products have become so numerous it’s difficult to keep track of them. Jolt Cola was introduced in 1985. Among ordinary soft drinks, Mountain Dew claimed the highest caffeine content until Pepsi Max came along. Red Bull was launched in 1997, Stay Alert gum in

I’m well aware that the world at large seems to be in a lot of turmoil. There are some really painful situations going on and they’re not all “way over there” – some folks in our little corner of the world are experiencing life-altering situations. And, within this maze of emotions, I still find that life holds some pretty amazing gifts . . . some of them just show up and some of them are carefully thought out and uncovered. So I’m throwing rocks on my pile to remind me that God really has been close to me for many years and, all things being equal and I decide to just stick close to him, I’m really satisfied that there are more gifts and blessings to be uncovered where the last ones showed up. So, I’ll keep working in my yard, and digging in the flower beds – well, actually Mary will dig in the flower beds and then she’ll come get me when she finds that new rock and she’ll ask me to dig it out and dispose of it. So I’ll dig it out and haul it off and, instead of throwing it over there

Familiar faces selected to lead Hornet girls golf, XC programs Two new varsity coaches – familiar faces in Enumclaw High sporting circles – have been appointed to lead Hornet athletes. Veteran coach Tod Witzel will lead the girls’ cross country program and Steve Murphy has taken over as girls’ golf coach.

Witzel is a lifelong runner, often seen chugging along the many roads connecting Plateau towns. He began his running career at a young age, competing in numerous events at the national level prior to becoming a decorated runner at Lindbergh High School. He became a Washington state champion sprinter and then took
his talents to Oregon State. As a scholarship athlete he competed for the Beavers at both the Pac 10 and national level. Following college he continued to compete on the international stage, until deciding to begin his journey as a teacher and coach. He began his coaching career as an assistant track coach at Philomath High School in Oregon. He returned to Washington and took over the head coaching position at Sumner High School for three years. During this time he was hired as a teacher at Enumclaw High School and became an assistant coach for the Hornets. After three seasons, he took over the EHS track program and was the head coach until 1999. At that time he stepped
away from coaching to focus on his family. His wife Jean is a social studies teacher at Enumclaw High and their daughter Bryn will be entering the ninth grade this fall at EHS. Jeff Jacobson has overseen both the boys and girls cross country teams and will now focus solely on the boys program.
Assistant golf coach gets promotion
Murphy certainly isn’t new to Hornet golf, having been actively involved for the past seven years. As a volunteer he has brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the program. He played competitive golf in high school and began his career as an assistant professional at

Inglewood Country Club in 1993. After a couple of years in the golf industry he decided to complete his education degree and become a teacher and coach. He has been a head baseball coach at Spanaway Lake and Decatur high schools and was an assistant for basketball, football and baseball at various schools. In August 2006 he decided to move his family to Enumclaw where he has been an assistant with both the baseball and boys and girls golf programs.

OBITUARY SHEM WEBLER Shem Douglas Webler died unexpectedly in his Seattle home June 9, 2013. He was born June 6, 1977, in Springfield, Mo., son of Harriet Chase and Gerald Webler. Immediately after his graduation from Coeur d ’Alene (Idaho) High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his marriage to Jill (Roe) McFall of Troy, Idaho, the couple had daughters Rachel and Ashley. He served as a medi-
cal laboratory technician in Korea, at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu and at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma. During his 15 years of service, he achieved the rank of sergeant and was awarded numerous medals and honors and served in Iraq. After being honorably discharged he was employed at Harborview Medical Center Unit in Seattle. During his career he earned a bachelor of science in health science and was working toward a master’s in chemistry. He is survived by his
mother, Harriet Chase, of Randolph, Vt.; father Gerald Webler and wife Kelly; daughters Rachel and Ashley Webler; and siblings Edward Webler and wife Desiree, Kevin Webler and wife Vanessa, Nephi Webler, Jared Webler, Seth Webler, Aaron Webler and wife Jeanie, Angie Farmer, Samantha Stout and husband Dwayne and Daniel Bird and wife Amanda. Memorial ser vices took place June 24 in Medical Lake, Wash., at The Washington State Veterans Cemetery. Donations can be made in his honor to War Dogs Making It Home (www.

Scabiosa, also known as pincushion flower due to the round shape of the blooms, is a nectar-rich perennial that attracts both hummingbirds and butterflies and is a perennial so it will come back next year after going dormant this winter. The new variety you have is called ‘Mariposa’ because this is the Spanish word for butterfly and the flat flower heads make it easy for butterflies to sit on the blooms as they sip up the nectar. As for deadheading, yes you should follow the stem of the faded flower all the way to the base of the plant and cut out the stem and faded bloom with one snip. This variety of scabiosa will continue to bloom all summer, behaving like a free-flowering annual plant if you continue to remove faded flowers. You do not need to fertilize

Use a slow release plant food in the spring when you see signs of new growth. Another growing tip is to try and keep the foliage dry when you water. You can shorten any rose plant by one third of its height in July and always remove the three D’s any time of year – that would be anything dead, diseased or damaged. If you have a shrub roses or landscape roses that are multi-branching such as the Flower Carpet or Drift rose this is the time of year to prune back with confidence removing all the faded blooms.
