Ananda Mela Joyful Festival lifts spirits BY JOSHUA CHIN Redmond Reporter Contributor
Last weekend, the annual Ananda Mela Joyful Festival of India — a free, community-oriented celebration — inspired thousands of participants with its color, taste and music. “Ananda means fun,
and mela means festival,” explained volunteer, Gauranga Candra Das. Every summer — when the sky is clearest and the sun is most generous — the Vedic Culture Center (VCC), a nonprofit organization in Sammamish striving to preserve Indian art and culture, teams up with hundreds of volun-
teers to showcase the best of India at Redmond City Hall. “The original misunderstanding about India is that India is a place about elephants and snake charmers,” Das said. “It is time to change some perceptions here.” Stemming from last year’s success, the vol-
unteers preserved many appeals of the festival and found new ways to improve. Booths and activities conveyed a culture entrenched in history from garments and traditional foods, to Bollywood dances. “The biggest difference this time is a magnificent display on the River [ more JOY page 8 ]

Ron Grant, who will serve as interim public works director while the city conducts a search for someone to fill the position, can attest to this. “Tim provided a better understanding to our staff of relational leadership, which emphasizes the importance of establishing positive relationships with each other in order to gain the trust necessary to continuously improve as an organization,” he said. Grant, who plans to retire at the beginning of next year, said Fuller’s history in the fire department and his relationship with the mayor helped him fit into the role as public works director quickly. He said his background in firefighting taught him to look for exits and sprinklers when he enters a building. His brief stint working at RPD has taught him to make sure to always lock his car and hide any valuables from sight. Is panhandling legal in Redmond? It depends Redmond, can you spare a dime? Many questions have surfaced recently regarding whether panhandling is legal in Redmond. As with most law or code enforcement questions, “it depends.” Is panhandling legal? It depends. If someone is on public property, isn’t interfering with traffic or acting inappropriately, then yes, it’s legal. It’s similar to employees standing on street corners spinning signs for businesses or posting a political sign or yard sale sign. It is public property. None of these add to the appeal of our city, but they are legal. When should I contact police? It depends. If someone is in danger, always call 911. If someone panhandles on private property such as, say, your personal property and won’t leave, call 911. If they are aggressive, threatening, impeding traffic, or intimidating, call 911. These crimes require police to identify and speak with a victim. But simply asking for money is not a crime. Can people panhandle in parking lots? It depends. This is a common frustration for business owners. They can’t be on private property; however, they can be on private property that is open to the public. Being in a shopping center parking lot, not interfering with anyone’s right of way is legal. If it’s an ungated area and anyone is allowed, then so are panhandlers. Who are these panhandlers? There is no “cookiecutter” panhandler; they are normal people like Jim Bove

you and me. They may be jobless looking for income. They may be homeless looking for food. They may be trying to feed addictions. They may want bus fare. They may have a home and a job and are looking for spending money. How can I help? Every panhandler has different needs (“it depends”), but you may want to ask them. If they need money, ask what they are saving for. Cash donations usually aren’t fruitful for anyone; it’s better to donate concrete items – food, socks, clothes, toiletries, gift certificates and other items everyone needs. Donating to an organization that specifically supports homelessness or unemployment is another option. What is the city doing about panhandling? The
city works collaboratively with local services and is committed to responding to unsafe situations. The Redmond Police Department will respond to all calls, but just because someone is panhandling doesn’t mean a crime was committed. Typically, the only violation police can cite aggressive panhandlers for is disorderly conduct but this crime requires a victim. An anonymous 911 caller or a store manager calling for customers who have already left prohibits officers from enforcing the law. So, is panhandling legal? It depends.

Redmond is a dynamic place to live, work and play, and unique among suburban cities. Redmond is known for its green natural environment, abundant opportunities for community connections and diversity of cultural, arts and recreation experiences.
UNIQUE PARKS
Redmond has 23 parks and more than 1,000 acres of developed parkland. More than 7,000 street trees keep Redmond’s streets shaded in the warm summer months and provide vibrant color throughout the autumn. Among the many unique park features, and located just minutes from downtown, are a sandy swimming beach, more than 800 acres of secluded evergreen forest, more than 40 miles of trails and a historic farm park. Idylwood Beach Park is located on beautiful Lake Sammamish. Enjoy a family picnic or a kayak paddle. Spend a warm summer afternoon swimming at the lifeguarded beach, play games on the grassy slope or explore the playground. A tour of Farrel-McWhirter Farm Park features a historic barn, farm animals and a tractor-pulled wagon
ride in the grassy meadow. Children greet Eyore the donkey, Bitsy the pig and Thunder the pony in the barnyard. The multi-use trails in the park connect to the Puget Power Trail. The Farrel-WcWhirter equestrian program offers riding lessons for children and adults, as well as the only horse arena with trailer parking open to the general public in the area. The orienteering course provides a challenge for experienced compass navigators. Farm-themed children’s birthday parties are popular, and the annual Big Truck Day on Aug. 30 attracts truck enthusiasts of all ages. Watershed Preserve has 800 acres of forest and open space, just minutes east of downtown. The trails are perfect for mountain biking, horseback riding or a peaceful nature hike in the woods. The ADA interpretive trail is a unique feature of the Watershed Preserve. Grass Lawn Park was selected as a 2013 Golden Teddy Awards finalist by Seattle ParentMap. With a spray park, large children’s play structure, unique climbing rocks and meandering pathways, Grass Lawn is a local favorite for families with children. DOWNTOWN PARK
Every great city has a signature destination park, a catalyst for economic vitality and a gathering place. Downtown Park will be Redmond’s active community space for celebrating and showcasing arts and events. The park site, located between Redmond Way and Cleveland Street, and The Stone House and 161st Avenue Northeast, is now three-fourths of an acre of grassy open space. The red bistro tables and chairs currently invite residents to share a conversation over a cup of coffee. When construction is completed, the park will be two acres in the heart of downtown. Cleveland will be Redmond’s “main street,” and the arts will inspire and connect the community to the new downtown. Beginning this fall, residents and business owners will be invited to participate in the park master plan process by selecting concepts, character and design features, such as a plaza, walking paths and a great lawn. Residents will begin to see changes soon, starting with the demolition of the Brown Street
Building on Cleveland Street later in August.
REDMOND CENTRAL CONNECTOR (RCC)
The RCC is 1.1-mile of paved regional trail on the railroad right-ofway that connects the city’s historic downtown with the town center, Bear Creek Trail and the Sammamish River Trail. The 12-acre linear park will connect to more than 60 miles of regional trails. The RCC features the interactive Erratic Artwork public installation by artist John Fleming. The piece, using reclaimed material from the railroad, in addition to steel, glass and LED lights, explores the notion of time in Redmond’s history and changing environment. This fall, watch for the RCC phaseone grand opening. The celebration will feature performance and public engagement with bicycle musical instruments, a bike rodeo, and Parks & Trails Commission walks, in addition to the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Phase two of the RCC project will extend the paved trail an additional 1.2 miles north, across the Sammamish River and 154th Avenue Northeast trestles and along Willows Road. He’s the bus driver who loves to make people laugh, a “smooth operator” who does his best to help people get where they need to go. And for the next year, Metro Transit’s Robert Duncan is No. 1. In a surprise ceremony on July 17, Duncan, 60, was honored as Metro’s 2012 Transit Operator of the Year. Other Metro operators chose him as a respected peer who exemplifies excellence in safety and customer service. “Robert joins Metro’s elite group of top drivers — the best of the best,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine. “He knows the system inside and out, and customers appreciate and depend on his reliability and helpfulness.” Duncan is a Redmond resident who works at Metro’s East Base in Bellevue. He was born in Seattle and attended Roosevelt High School, North Seattle Community College and the Washington Police Academy. He first joined Metro in 1977, and drove part- and full-time routes in three stints spanning about 30 years. He recently earned a 28-year safe driving award.

Metro’s top bus driver a ‘smooth operator’
These days, Duncan drives Route 311 part time, carrying riders from Woodinville to Seattle. That means his “decades of experience and knowledge are still on the road, and that’s a big benefit to customers,” said Metro Transit Operations Manager Jim O’Rourke. Commendations and kudos from customers and colleagues say Duncan is a “smooth operator” who “does a great job” and “is a plus for Metro.” To be a good bus operator, you have to be a people person, said Metro Transit General Manager Kevin Desmond. “Robert exemplifies Metro’s 2,700 drivers — he’s a driver who loves his job and cares about our customers.” Since 1979, the drivers themselves have selected the best of their peers to hold the title of Metro Transit’s Operator of the Year. In order to receive the award, a driver must first be chosen Operator of the Month from one of the seven transit bases. At the end of the year, the Operator of the Year is selected by a vote of all fellow Operators of the Month. The annual ceremony is usually held the following summer.

bombing victims, she said she also wanted the poems to be positive and uplifting rather than focusing on the bombings themselves. Finkelstein said people are not ready for poems about the events, lost limbs and the like. Gailey agreed and said she likes that the anthology is lighthearted and focused on being cheerful and uplifting. “It’s really important to me, instead of feeling powerless … you’re able to give something of comfort,” she said about her involvement in the anthology. Gailey’s poem in “Like One” is called “Female Comic Book Superheroes” and was originally published in her book “Becoming the Villainess” in 2006. “Jeannine’s poem is so clever,” Finkelstein said. “I really liked it a lot.” “Like One” is $14.99 and is currently available on Amazon.com and CreateSpace.com. Finkelstein said they are also in the process of talking with bookstores throughout the country to put the book on their shelves.

Residents moved back in once the power was restored to those units. “Red Cross (assisted) with a temporary shelter... for displaced residents who could not make other arrangements,” Beard said. She added that at least three units are “completely uninhabitable” and the
surrounding units have smoke, water and/or fire damage and are likely going to be uninhabitable as well for an extended period of time. The cause of the fire appears to be food left cooking unattended. Beard said the fire investigator’s initial on-scene investigation Sunday showed that the cause appeared consistent
with witness accounts: Oil was left in a pan on a stove and it caught fire. “The resident discovered the fire and was unable to put it out,” Beard said. RFD personnel praised the usage of a monitored fire alarm, which prompted a fast response to a fire that could have caused major injury and even more significant damage.

10 types of childhood trauma and they fall into two categories. The first one involves family members and includes alcoholism, mental illness, domestic abuse of a mother, a family member in prison, or loss of a parent through divorce, death or abandonment. The other category involves those things that happen to the child and includes physical, verbal or sexual abuse as well as physical or emotional neglect. This list is by no means exhaustive because there are so many types of childhood trauma, such as overcoming a severe illness or accident, seeing a sibling abused, being homeless, poverty and more. Only 10 childhood traumas were followed in the study because they

well into adulthood. Researchers have looked into serious events that a group of adults reported they experienced as children; these were named adverse childhood experiences. The events studied were traumatic, and much more than the typical “bumps” of childhood. were the most commonly mentioned and they had all been well researched. It’s likely that those who have experienced other types of toxic stress over months or years would also face a greater risk of health consequences. The more adverse childhood experiences a child has, and the longer the exposure to stress, the greater the risk for problems throughout life. Behavior problems defined in the study include substance abuse, reduced physical activity, or missed school or work. Physical issues include severe obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. Mental health problems manifest as anxiety, depression or suicide attempts. For teens and older children, the overload of stress hormones can make learning more difficult and impact the ability to trust adults or develop healthy relationships with peers. To relieve their stress, they may turn to unhealthy choices like alcohol, overindulgence of food, marijuana (or other drugs), high-risk sports, multiple sex partners, or over-achievement. Of course, not every child exposed to adversity is going to develop problems. As parents, we can take steps to build resilience in our children that can help them overcome the impact of adverse experiences or any stressor. For example, help children make friends, engage them in age-appropriate volunteer activities, maintain a daily routine and help kids set attainable goals and steps to achieve them. You can teach your child ways to take a break from stress or what’s [ more PARENT page 7 ]

La Isla Cuisine brings Puerto Rican fare to Redmond SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com
While much of Central and Latin American cuisine uses a lot of similar ingredients and shares food staples such as rice, beans, plantain bananas and pork, each country puts its own spin on things. “The ingredients are very similar,” said Alfonso Gon-
zalez. “The way you prepare them is what’s different.” As a co-owner of the newly opened La Isla Cuisine at 16505 Redmond Way in downtown Redmond, he spends a fair amount of time explaining to people the difference between Mexican food and the Puerto Rican food that is served in his restaurant. “Our spices are flavored
spices,” he explained. “They’re not spicy spices.” Gonzalez said if heat is added to Puerto Rican dishes, it’s after the fact, not part of the main preparation. He added that garlic is a big part of Puerto Rican cuisine as well, saying, “there’s garlic in almost everything (they) make.” Gonzalez, who grew up in Rio Piedras just south of
the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan, said the food of his native country is a mix of African and Spanish cooking. There are also influences from the indigenous Taino people of Puerto Rico. Gonzalez designs the menu at La Isla and said they try to keep their dishes as traditional as possible. However, he said they do [ more ISLA page 9 ]

Evergreen Family Theatre will present “Fiddler on the Roof, Jr.” on Aug. 9-10 in Woodinville. This poignant, humorous story tells of Tevye the dairyman’s struggle to preserve cultural traditions in a rapidly changing world. The book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick weave a rich historical tapestry. That tapestry is highlighted by memorable songs such as “Tradition,” “Matchmaker,” “If I were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.” The original 1964 Broadway production won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Fiddler on the Roof, Jr. opens at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 and at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at Leota Jr. High Theatre, 19301 168th Ave. NE, Woodinville. Tickets are $9 at the door. The goal is a balance that provides children with better tools to manage the aftereffects of adverse experiences, or any kind of stress, within a supportive, stimulating environment. Family counseling can also be a very useful tool to achieve this balance. Armed with this knowledge, take an honest look at how your child’s early years and family environment may be impacting your son’s or daughter’s ability to cope. He explained that people like to mix rum, not taste it. La Isla’s Rum Club teaches people about different kinds of rum and like wine, what types of food pairs well with them. Rum Club is the last Wednesday of the month in Redmond and the last Tuesday of the month in Ballard and features a different brand each meeting. “I’ve learned so much,” Gonzalez said about Rum Club.

take into consideration that the Pacific Northwest is about as far from Puerto Rico as you can get on mainland United States and not all of the typical and traditional ingredients are readily available. Because of this, La Isla’s menu also has a few Northwest nods — including salmon, which is not a fish native to the Caribbean Sea. La Isla opened April 14 and the Redmond location is the second restaurant for Gonzalez and his business partner and fellow co-owner Jason Mikos. The first La Isla is located in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. The two men decided to expand and open a location in Redmond because there is a decent-sized Puerto Rican population on the Eastside, Gonzalez said. He said people from Microsoft travel down to Puerto Rico once a year to recruit employees. Gonzalez said they started their business by selling Puerto Rican food at the Fremont Sunday Market in Seattle. The original plan was to do this for three years or so and then open a physical restaurant, but Gonzalez said they were successful enough that first year they were able to open La Isla in Ballard ahead of schedule. After about a year, Gonzalez and Mikos bought out a third business partner and became
the sole co-owners. “Jason’s the numbers guy, I’m the kitchen guy,” Gonzalez said about their business relationship. Gonzalez’s restaurant career began when he moved to Amherst, Mass. to attend the University of Massachusetts. He started out washing dishes at the campus commons, eventually working at other restaurants. He moved on to other roles in the kitchen including line cook, prep cook and sous chef. A lot of the items on the La Isla menu are based on old recipes from Gonzalez’s family. In addition to Puerto Rican cuisine, the restaurant has a Rum Club, a monthly event where diners can
