Rob Reynolds’ four-year mission to walk around America By Dennis Box Editor
Many walk for exercise or simply to get somewhere. Few who walk find it to truly be an experience or transformation. That, however, is the story of Rob Reynolds’ walk around America. Reynolds, 86, told the story of his walking mission recently at Enumclaw’s Highpoint Village, where he is living. His walk began Jan. 8, 1995, and ended in 1999, spanning four years, seven months and

26 days. He was 68 when he began his walk around America. The story originated in Idaho where Rob was born and raised. He heard about a group known as Mission Aviation Fellowship, a Christian organization that traces its history to 1943 when World War II pilots met for prayer. According to its website, the organization was launched after the war, using planes to provide services and spread Christianity to remote areas of the world.

pickup and pulled a trailer, planned on covering about 20 miles a day. Planning to begin with a trip down the West Coast, Rob discovered 20 miles was too far and cut back to an average of 16 miles a day. “That winter was a particular trial,” Reynolds said, because of storms. The couple finally arrived in San Diego at the end of May 1995. He was advised against crossing the Southwest states during the summer months because of the extreme heat. Reynolds decided to drive to Maine and walk down the East Coast. The daily routine had Marge driving ahead of her
Rob heard the group was training pilots in Idaho near where he was raised. He was inspired by their mission and came up with the idea to help the fellowship by raising both money and awareness by a walk around America. Rob met with Max Meyers, executive director of the fellowship, and was told, “If you are crazy enough to do it, we are crazy enough to back you.” Living in Washington, Rob began his journey on state Route 101. He and his wife, Marge, who drove a
husband, then walking back to meet Rob and walk for a mile or more. She would then drive ahead once more, but keep close tabs on Rob in case a problem arose. They kept this routine Tuesday through Saturday. The couple would find a local church on Sunday to attend, then move their fifthwheel trailer to the next location Monday. “I had a one-person support team – my wife,” Rob said.”She wanted to do it for the Lord and help my dream come true.” Rob said they met many challenges along the way. One was in The Bronx, one of New York City’s five boroughs.

www.courierherald.com “She (Marge) followed me as I walked through Bronx and across the George Washington Bridge to New Jersey,” Rob said. “I walked into Fort Lee (New Jersey) and I lost her. The only way to contact her was to find a place to call the cell phone she had in the car.” They finally found each other several hours later. “She was very mad and ready to quit,” Rob said. “But we managed to keep going.” Rob said the big eastern cities were the toughest, but the majority of the experience was, “wonderful… people were very helpful and thoughtful.” The most difficult time came at Waveland State Park
in Mississippi when Marge tripped on a curb and badly skinned her knee. Rob said she tried to treat it at the trailer, but had an allergic reaction to the medication. She was unconscious and not breathing and Rob preformed CPR until emergency medical help arrived. Later, Marge was diagnosed with pneumonia. They stayed put for a month while she recovered and gained back the strength needed to carry on the mission. The final stretch of the trip was a span from eastern Montana to the Washington post town of Aberdeen, but Rob was slowed due to osteoarthritis in his knee. During the summer of 1998 it took
seven steroid injections to get him across Montana. “It was too painful to walk every day,” Rob said. “One day after one mile I sat on the guard rail and hoped Marge would come back for me.” After Montana Rob got his knee replaced and a heart valve repair. By May of 1999 he hit the road again to complete the mission, finally ending up in the Marine View Church in Tacoma where he and Marge began the journey Jan. 8, 1995. Rob walked through 10 pairs of shoes, wearing each pair for about 11,000 miles until the soles wore through.

A MOTHER’S HEART
By A. Louise Deffley – May 2003
No one knows a mother’s heart, not even another mother. They may empathize with one another; perhaps even believe they know the other’s heart. It cannot be, as each mother is alone with herself, with her child as it is born. Each life has its own pathway, its own emotions, sorrows and joys. Each child nestled under the mother’s heart waiting to be born learns his/her mother in his/her own way. Yet, the child will never know the mother’s heart. Mothers have a special spot carved for each life she has carried cradled within her very own self. Some children may form a stronger outward bond, but all have their own inward bond that none can invade or destroy. A mother’s sorrows, pains, regrets and joys settle into the designated spot as the years pass by, as each child grows into maturity. Nothing erases the moment of first seeing the tiny child, counting the fingers and toes, holding the warmth close outside while the inside gives up the pain of departure. Oh yes! A mother’s heart! There is no other that compares. No other individual can know the closeness formed from within that of necessity pushes forth into the world to go forth into separation.

Statistics show fewer owners falling behind Until 2008, most people had never heard the term “short sale.” Unfortunately, in the years since, it has become a phrase that almost everyone is familiar with. So, what is a short sale? Put very simply, a short sale is any sale that doesn’t net enough money to pay the underlying lienholders everything they are owed. For example, if you bought a home in 2006 and wanted to sell it in 2012, in all likelihood it would have been Shawn Inmon worth substantially Columnist less. Unless the seller has the cash to bring to the table to solve that shortage, they will have to ask the lender to accept a “short” amount. Why would a lienholder accept less than what they are owed? There were many reasons, particularly in a declining market. If they didn’t want to accept the “short” amount, the lienholder’s only other option was to foreclose on the property, which is a time-consuming and expensive process. If the foreclosure process took nine months or longer to complete, the property was almost certainly going to be worth less because values had continued to decline. In an attempt to cut their losses, many lenders simply accepted a smaller amount

Forget newspapers, focus on bed sheets
Those in the newspaper world are collectively wringing their hands and tearing their hair over the sale of a couple of East Coast dailies, the impact of the Internet, revenue and other garbled gerunds. In the office a couple of us were reading a release from the CEO of a national online media outlet that used a string of mangled and malignant clauses to describe something; I was never sure what, but I suspect he was laying off a pile of people – of course, in a proud and positive way. He sprinkled in a few references to the happy future, models and commitment, which really means no future, stupid plastic models Dennis Box that don’t fit togethEditor er and I want more money for my commitment to nothing. CEOs should try playground rules occasionally. Say what you mean or we take your marbles. One would think an industry that is supposed to be about communications would occasionally try that – communicate. Every time someone from the media business predicts the future I get a headache and run for the buttermilk. It’s the only thing that cures me. However, there are much more important issues than media moguls and their malicious clauses – and chief among those issues are sheets. Forget newspapers, we need to consider bed sheets. I was listening to the women who surround me at the office during the Enumclaw Street Fair and they were going on and on about bed sheets. I could not understand what the heck the fuss was about.

Letters to the Editor Candidates need to serve public, not outsiders I read Mr. Elfers’ column of Wednesday, Aug 7 (Union Seeking More Influence,” with alarm. If unions are backing candidates, there is an ulterior motive. This begs the question why? Money
isn’t thrown around just for good will; there is always a reason behind it. Personally, I don’t want someone representing our city and making decisions for our city, having to answer to a union (or be the mouthpiece for a union). I want someone who cares about our city and the people who live in it, make the best deci-
sions for all of us on that basis. Nancy Wieland Enumclaw
Hopes Creation will stay part of Enumclaw scene I was greatly saddened to read that Creation might not be continued in the future. Over the last four years I have attended taking visiting youth and adults
including children, friends and grandchildren. The event has been a highlight of the summer for many. Though the music can be loud at times the message of hope and joy for all ages is truly worth the experience – indeed lifechanging. In a time when suicide for young people is at a high I am praying an agreement can be made to keep Creation in our area. Lynne Snyder Enumclaw
Modern world short on virtue Do you know the seven virtues? The ancient Greeks gave us four of them: prudence, justice, temperance (restraint) and courage. The Bible adds: faith, hope and love. The Apostle Paul listed nine virtues or “Fruit of the Spirit” in Galatians 5: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Ben Franklin emphasized 13 virtues: temperance, order, resolution, frugality, moderation, industry, cleanliness, tranquility, silence, sincerity, justice, chastity and humility. Have you noticed that our time does not hold these virtues as goals to be sought? Perhaps it’s time to return to our cultural and historic roots and seek these virtues again. If we followed the virtues, perhaps borrowers would have been more prudent when they took out sub-prime variable-rate loans, real-

izing they couldn’t afford to buy that house because interest rates would eventually rise, bankrupting them. If investment bankers had followed the virtue of humility, we wouldn’t have seen the misuse of credit default swaps and the near destruction of the U.S. and world economies. If we held these virtues as our standards today, perhaps Anthony Weiner would not have sent his “sexts,” Mark Sanford might not have “hiked the Appalachians” while really visiting his mistress in Latin America and Bernie Madoff wouldn’t
have set up his Ponzi scheme to bilk billions of dollars from overly trusting clients. Obesity might not be epidemic in this country if people were constantly thinking about Ben Franklin’s moderation and the Apostle Paul’s self-control. If we followed the faithfulness virtue, perhaps we wouldn’t need to sign 100 documents when we buy a house today, when 30 years ago we required far less. Emphasizing the virtue of courage might make us more willing to face difficulties in marriages and could influence the president and Congress to get along in order to deal with the big problems we face today like immigration, health care and the national debt. Some of you might be thinking at this point that those virtues I am touting so strongly are from a lost “better age.” You might be arguing

Old Grange getting a new life Even back in my dawn-world days, it was still called the old Neuwaukum Grange, as though it had never been “new.” I guess at one time it was a school house, before it became a social center and dance hall for farmers in the district. The first time I remember visiting the place, I must have been around 6 or 7 years old. My mama was up on the stage playing the piano – it may, in fact, be the same piano that’s setting on the stage today – along with an accordion player, a banjo player and a drummer. Together, they turned out one hell of a schottishche that so excited the dancers they’d jump and shout and skip and jump again until the whole building seemed to shake; perhaps it actually did. During the past 30 or 40 years, the place was used less and less and gradually began to fall apart. The

foundation rotted and buckled in the center and it looked as though the entire building might implode. Then along came Mark and Jason Gwerder and, with considerable help from other people in the region, especially Boci Delfino, they started slapping the place back in shape. (You may recall a column I wrote about their efforts several months ago.) As some of you may have experienced if you’ve tackled a similar project, the artifacts you discover during such restoration can pro-
duce a flood of nostalgic memories. Mark ran across his uncle’s name, Hank Felchlin, scribbled in pencil on the wall. Rather then paint over this relic, he preserved it under a glass frame. They found the original grange sign buried under the collapsed foundation and saved it as well. Today, most of the building has been renovated and has already been rented for several weddings and a funeral. The outdoor beer garden still needs a little work, but the kitchen has been completely overhauled with new plumbing, sinks, cabinets and a convection oven. There are two unisex restrooms, which seems progressive for a little country landmark 36 miles from downtown Seattle. There’s a “changing room” in case a bride or someone else wants

Keep harvesting vegetables summer and fall You can plant a second harvest this week by seeding a winter crop of kale, herbs, cabbage and carrots. The trick to harvesting vegetables all year long is to cover the soil with a shade cloth in the summer to keep it cool right after you plant your summer seed. For a winter harvest cover your crops with a hoop house or clear plastic tunnel in late fall to protect your salad greens from the cold. These row covers are called “season extenders” and in the mild winter climate of western Washington you can enjoy fresh grown vegetables almost all year long. Do you get the tomatoes wet when you water? Anything you can do to keep rain or sprinkler water off a tomato’s skin will help keep the fruit crack free. Tomatoes are also picky about how often they get water. A consistent supply of water keeps the fruit from cat-facing or developing multiple cracks on the blossom end of the fruit. A mulch of wood chips 2 inches thick will help keep the moisture in the soil at consistent levels. Should I cut the tops off my tomato plants so the green fruit will ripen sooner? My neighbors have red tomatoes but mine are still all green! Sign me: Green with Envy Beheading your tomato vines is not necessary to speed ripening. yellow skinned or pear-shaped tomatoes ripen sooner than large beefsteak varieties that require more hot nights to sweeten up and turn red. If your tomatoes are still green when a frost threatens in the fall you can harvest them early and store the green fruit indoors in a cool dry spot until the tomatoes turn red and ripen. Every summer my lettuce grows tall and starts to flower. Then the leaves taste bitter. Is there a way to stop this from happening? R., email Lettuce hates warm weather so “lettuce” be practical. Growing lettuce and other leafy greens like kale and spinach in a shaded spot or even draping the plants with a shade cloth will keep the foliage tender for a few extra weeks in the summer but once August arrives your salad days are over. Mass, “Lord, I am not worthy.” No one really is worthy, yet we make rules about some people’s connectedness and worthiness although in actual fact, none of us are worthy. Almost every time Jesus eats, he seems to be eating with the wrong people, at the wrong table, saying the wrong things, or not washing his hands ahead of time. By doing so, Jesus potentially rearranged the social order, because meal etiquette defined and maintained the social order and social class and this is what surely upset both religion and state. Eucharist still could and will redefine social relationships, but we have not

Hopefully God may use him to draw us together. Each of us could work on bringing down walls and seeing the beauty of all of our brothers and sisters. As the Rev. Peter Little from the Community Presbyterian Church in Buckley noted recently in this column, we all have a mission as followers of Jesus, with a sense of the community of the church and to include all as we reach out as disciples.

Donnie Maks, 63, a six year resident of Charlo, Montana passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a courageous 12 year battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was born in Black Diamond, Washington to John and Molly Maks and spent most of his life there and in Enumclaw. He originally worked for Weyerhauser cruising timber and managing tree planting crews. He then had a long and varied career with the US Forest Service in timber, recreation and lands. He loved ‘testing the product’ when he administered the Special Use permit for Crystal Mountain and had to learn to ski. He worked his way up the wildland fire career ladder, starting with building fire lines and finishing as an Operations Section Chief on one of only sixteen National Wildland Fire Teams. He built his own home in Enumclaw and created beautiful oak furniture. He loved to hike, and enjoyed hunting and fishing his entire life. In order to stay in physical shape for fire season, he ran and rode his bike. He ran marathons for many years, participated in the Hood to Coast relay twice, completed the single day Seattle to Portland bike ride two years in a row, and also finished many triathlons. He started his saddle mule hobby seven years before he retired and enjoyed many hours riding local trails, including ones east of Crystal Mountain, as well as raising and training four baby mules. He always said if he had one more hobby, he’d have to quit work. He was able to retire early in 2007 and move to Montana, one of his life’s dreams. There he continued to ride and train his mules and even won first place at Montana Mule Days last year in the Trail Class on his favorite mule, Bailey. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Phyllis, two daughters, Emily and Chrissy, and two grandchildren, Olivia and Joseph. An informal Celebration of Life to honor Don will be held Saturday, August 17th, at Shangri-La on the Green, starting anytime after 2 pm. We invite anyone wanting to remember Donnie to come and enjoy the day for him. You can access their website at www.shangrilaonthegreen.com for directions and additional information. Dinner will be provided at 5 pm, followed by a video. Potluck snacks and desserts are welcome. Call or text 406.396.2488 or 253.315.2583 for the facility access code the day prior to the event. Any help setting up Friday afternoon August 16th, or cleaning up on Sunday August 18th is most welcome. Charities that supported his fight against cancer were Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Relay for Life, and American Cancer Society.

INMON FROM 4 than they were owed. That is why we saw so many successful short sales between 2008 and 2012. Things are changing in today’s market, though, and it is directly impacting people’s ability to do short sales. The time-pressure banks were feeling before has gone away in
a market where prices are rising. Now, if the lender looks at a short sale versus a foreclosure, foreclosing becomes a more attractive option. If the banks believe the home will likely be worth more nine months down the road, they have no impetus to settle early. This is impacting homeowner’s ability to achieve a successful short sale. Here on the Plateau, I am seeing fewer and fewer short sales being completed. Unfortunately, if a

www.courierherald.com homeowner is substantially behind on a mortgage, this potentially removes at least one option for resolving the situation. What’s left? A homeowner can offer a deed in lieu of foreclosure, which allows them to simply turn the keys over to the lender and walk away. In the recent past, lenders have not wanted to accept those easily, but a rising market may make that a more attractive option. One final option is to speak directly to
the bank and see if a loan modification that changes the terms of their mortgage is possible. The best news I’ve seen is a report that says far fewer people are missing that first mortgage payment in 2013. If fewer people are falling behind, we will need fewer methods for dealing with homeowners who can’t stay current. After five years of fallout from the mortgage meltdown, everyone can use the breather.

Midwife offers moms out-of-hospital birth
Serving the needs of expectant mothers desiring something other than the traditional trip to the hospital, Terah Lara established Foothills Midwifery in April. A licensed midwife, Lara explains, is “a trained professional who provides complete care to lowrisk women seeking an out-of-hospital birth experience. When women and their babies are screened well and low risk is established, they are candidates for midwifery care. Midwives spend a tremendous amount of time with their clients, increasing safety by screening as well as developing a relationship that leads to a compatible and cohesive team.” Lara serves women who want to deliver their babies either at home or at The Birthing Inn in Tacoma. “I truly love every aspect of midwifery care. I offer complete informative care so that each woman can make choices for her own self and that of her baby. I want my clients to be excited to come to visits, to laugh, to learn and to grow each time.” Foothills Midwifery is at 1751 Cole St. in Enumclaw and can be reached at 206-2272211. Information can be found at www.foothhillsmidwife.com and Lara can also be contacted at Terah@foothillsmidwife.com.

WALLY FROM 6 to change clothes. It can substitute as a cloak room. A very attractive, shiny, shellacked bar immediately catches you eye – at least it immediately caught mine. Mark’s wife, Gina, is collecting yesteryear photographs of the people and dances to display on a wall, so if you have any such pictures you might call her. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with this historic icon, it’s located at the intersection of 180th and 384th. I can assure you
it’s an excellent facility for any special occasion you might want to celebrate, whether anniversaries, birthdays or Ground Hog Day. If you’d like to rent the place, contact Jason Gwerder at 253-640-3345. Watch for a grand opening in the near future. As I left the building, I happened to glance back at the main entrance. Lo and behold, proudly displayed over the doorway, in all the glory of past years, was the old sign they’d found under the foundation: “Neuwaukum Grange Hall #622.” So, there you are, friends. Everything old is new again.

Ticket prices for each of the four performances are $15, which includes parking; children 5 and younger will be admitted free. Tickets can be purchased in advanced at Johnson Exterior’s, 1724 Garrett St. in Enumclaw; Reber Ranch, 28606 132nd Ave. S.E. in Kent; Mike’s Western Supply, 22929 S.E. 436th St.
in Enumclaw; or on line at www.enumclawprorodeo.com. Tickets also can be purchased at the gate but organizers are expecting to sell out all performances so they encourage advance purchases. Gates open one hour before each performance. Those attending will be treated to traditional rodeo fare. On tap will be rough-
stock events like bareback riding, bull riding and saddle bronc riding; and timed events like barrel racing, breakaway roping, steer wrestling and more. This year, rodeo boosters have added two concerts. The Sammy Steele Band will play immediately following the Aug. 23 rodeo and Aces Up will

good about talking about material incentives, but bad about talking about emotions and intuitions. We are good at teaching technical skills. But when it comes to the most important things, like character, we have almost nothing to say.” Individualism is highly valued today in American society and, while it is important, it is strong social institutions like marriage and family that build virtue. Sixteen-year-old Harry Truman summed it up best: “This world is made up of all sorts of conditions of men, from the best one could wish for to the basest one could imagine. There are men who love money who will do anything for money, who will sell their souls for money. Then there are men who love money for the good that is in it, who like to make others happy…. Then there are those who are so religious they have no time to think of anyone or anything. These people are extremists who run the thing into the ground. I like a man who has enough worldly wisdom to take care of himself, but I like him to have time to love both his God and those around him.” (David McCullough, “Truman,” page 60).
that the 18th and 19th centuries were times of slavery and Jim Crow Laws, of scalping and massacres (by whites as well as Native Americans), of railroad and land deal scandals, of selfish and greedy industrialists living in great wealth while their workers and their families barely scraped by, and an age where a disastrous Civil War killed 628,000 Americans and devastated much of the South. You would be right in your observation. A list of virtues did not stop all the abuses of that earlier period. So, why bother to go back to the classic virtues? My answer is this: research has shown that if we think about certain virtues when we are confronted with difficult issues, our personal behavior changes as a result. If, for example, we read about the virtue of honesty before we make a decision about a moral issue, we are more likely to act honestly. According to research noted by David Brooks in his book, “The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement”: “We are

They were talking about buying sheets. I never thought anyone ever actually bought sheets for themselves. I figure they came as gifts or when you rented a cheap bed it came with sheets. Who knew woman really buy sheets and apparently like to buy them. Like it is fun or something. I have an economic theory. When God created Eve, the sheet business came
with the package. I know of no male type human who would put a sheet on a bed if it were not for a woman. Without women the entire industry would collapse overnight. Know what would happen then? Sheet CEOs would come out with a bunch of “we are proudly looking forward to a positive future with our bed sheetless model for men who are really pigs.” I better go find some sheets to proudly put on my bed.
