A newly established policy that ushered in term limits to San Juan County’s numerous advisory committees could lead to a major overhaul of the Marine Resources Committee. Eight positions on the MRC will be appointed by the county council in the coming weeks and a new MRC coordinator will soon be announced. On July 30, Philip Green, Robin Hirsch and Chuck Schietinger were appointed to MRC positions 2, 1 and 4, respectively. The appointments were made without notice or prior naming of the candidates during the final agenda time, titled “County Manager Clerk Updates.” Other appointments, including three to the Veterans Advisory Board and one to the Agricultural Resources Committee, were on the agenda with names of the appointees. A week later, Councilman Rick Hughes gave the required notice of reconsideration of the July 30 appointments. The following day, citing “discomfort” with the summary procedure and with his own lack of familiarity with the candidates, Hughes moved for reconsideration. Hughes and Jarman voted to reconsider the Green, Hirsch and Schietinger appointments and scheduled another vote for Aug. 20 at the council meeting on Shaw Island. Hughes insists he has no specific problem with the three candidates and nobody in mind to nominate instead. “I just wanted to take the time to do my homework to make sure that we were getting the appropriate balance on the committee,” he said. “The council has made major changes in the appointment process for all the advisory committees and the MRC is one of the most important, so I just wanted to take the extra time to do it right.”

Councilman Bob Jarman made similar comments before voting with Hughes to reconsider the appointments. The local MRC, the first in the nation created under the Northwest Straits Initiative and one of seven local MRCs working under the aegis of, and with funding provided by, the Northwest Straits Commission, consists of 15 San Juan County residents chosen to bring a diversity of scientists, conservationists, sports and commercial fishermen and water-intensive business interests together to plan and administer a variety of programs and projects to restore the northern Puget Sound to ecological health. Council Chairman Jamie Stephens, who is council liaison to the MRC, voted against reconsideration, saying he did so because he had proposed the appointments on July 30, an abbrevi-

SUPERPOD

hen I hear that I know it’s going to be a good day. A superpod is when all three pods of the southern resident orca whales are all together. That’s 82 orca whales traveling, foraging and socializing. A pod of whales are made up of families that are genetically distinct but have formed a union that in most cases is inseparable. It’s not a random mixing of whales that have decided to travel and forage together, these families of orca whales have been in their pods for generations. The three resident pods here are J,K and L pod. As of today the population stands at 82 whales in all three pods. This year the resident orca whales have been making themselves scarce, most likely associated with the low returning runs of chinook salmon that have come back to the Fraser River this Summer. My thinking is the chinook are most likely still out west in the Pacific which is where the residents have been most of the Summer so far.

Ruth De Vicenzo and Tango En Vie are collaborating to bring a weekend of soulful tango music and dancing to Orcas from Aug. 22 to 25. The schedule is as follows. It is being organized by Sara Thomsen, who grew up on Orcas. “On Orcas I stayed connected to the nature around and inside me,” she said. “This allowed me to follow my heart and spirit around the world and move to Argentina for love and Tango.” Thursday, Aug. 22 Classes at Oddfellows Hall, 6 to 7:30 p.m. basic tango elements, 7:30 to 9 p.m. navigation with the elements, asado (potluck BBQ) and opening milonga at Golden Tree Hostel, 9:30 p.m. to midnight, DJ music. Friday, Aug. 23 Classes at the senior center, 6 to

7:30 p.m., cadencias, 7:30 to 9 p.m., boleos. Tango at Random Howse, in the old Agave building, live music with Ruth and DJ Jud, 9 p.m. to late, $15. Saturday, Aug. 24 Classes at the senior center, 12 to 1:30 p.m. giros turns, 1:30 to 3 p.m. entrances. Sunday, Aug. 25 Classes at Oddfellows Hall, 12 to 1:30 p.m. cool cross-walking, 1:30 to 3 p.m. changes of direction. Milonga at Cascade Lake, 4 to 8 p.m. DJ Jud, $5. Shawna Franklin’s work at Artworks The Orcas Island Artworks features oil paintings of crows by Shawna Franklin, pictured at left, through the month of August. “I am thinking about capturing a gesture, describing the form, and attempting to create a sense of space,” she said. “Crows seemed to me to be a perfect animal to draw and paint as they are expressive in the way they move and congregate, and they are infinitely curious and intelligent creatures.”

Part of a superpod. That’s Ruffles on the right.

To see a Superpod traveling up the west side of San Juan Islands is a spectacular sight without question. There are groups of whales everywhere you look. Superpods are also when mating occurs. You will see a male from say J pod with a few females from K or L pod. When Ruffles (J-2) was alive it seemed he was the rock star of the pods, possibly because he appeared to come from an excellent gene pool. He lived into his 60’s and his mom or grandmother, Granny (J-1) is still around at about 102 years old. Tom and Nate Averna operate Deer Harbor Charters. They will be sharing their latest observations of what they see during their tours as well as provide news regarding the marine ecosystem here and in other parts of the world. San Juan County crime briefs by SCOTT RASMUSSEN Journal editor

Two men accused of home invasion Two men accused of assault while breaking into a Friday Harbor apartment will stand trial on felony charges in late October. The two men were allegedly in pursuit of prescription drugs. On Aug. 9, Travis James Webster, 26, and Taiya Autumn Speed, 23, each pleaded not guilty in San Juan County Superior Court to one count of first-degree burglary, a Class A felony that carries maximum penalties of life in prison, a $50,000 fine, or both. Bail was set at $2,500 for each, pending trial. According to court documents, authorities claim the two men were plotting to steal prescription medication from a man whom they both knew and wearing masks when they knocked on the door of his Linder Street apartment on July 11, shortly before midnight. When the man answered the door, they reportedly kicked it open, rushed into the apartment and demanded that he hand over the medication. They allegedly pounced on the man and a struggle ensued. The man’s two young daughters were asleep in the living room near where the fight broke out at, according to court documents. His wife, who quickly came to his aid, became involved in the altercation as well. During the struggle, the husband and wife fended off the assault and unmasked the assailants, who then fled the apartment. The four combatants reportedly know one another and the two alleged burglars were identified by name by the couple following the breakin and attack.

Authorities arrested Webster and Speed the following day.

Jail time for knifewielding man Exactly one month to the day after he was arrested for brandishing a knife and threatening a grocery store employee who chased after him for shoplifting, a 33-year-old man was sentenced to four months in jail for felony assault. On Aug. 6, Stanley Vincent Sing, identified in court documents as homeless, pleaded guilty in San Juan County Superior Court to one count of second-degree assault, a Class B felony, and to one count of third-degree theft, a gross misdemeanor. He was ordered to serve four months in jail, credited with having served 31 days of the sentence, and ordered to pay $876 in fines and fees. According to court documents, two employees of Orcas market saw Sing stealing food and beer on several occasions on July 6, and one of the two trailed after him when he left the grocery store. Sing reportedly pulled a knife on the man and threatened him, and then ran in the direction of Crescent Beach. Deputies later found him near the beach and took him into custody. A Class B felony, seconddegree assault carries maximum penalties of 10 years in prison, a $25,000 fine, or both; however, the standard range of sentencing set by the state is three to nine months in jail.

Bakerview burglar appeals conviction A Lopez Island man with a long criminal record that includes five prison terms for felony burglary

is appealing his most recent burglary conviction in San Juan County. On July 26, Daniel Glenn Roadruck, 49, was sentenced in San Juan County Superior Court to 68 months in prison, the maximum time allowed under the standard range of sentencing set by the state for second-degree burglary. Roadruck was convicted by a jury two weeks earlier in Superior Court of two counts of second-degree burglary and of seconddegree criminal trespass. A Class B felony, seconddegree burglary carries maximum penalties of 10 years in prison, a $20,000 fine, or both. He was also ordered to pay $600 in fines and fees; restitution has yet to be determined. Roadruck recently filed an appeal seeking to overturn the jury verdict at the state Court of Appeals. His most recent felony conviction stems from a rash of burglaries in Lopez Island’s Bakerview Road neighborhood during a three-month period beginning in April. At that time, he was out on conditional release pending trial on a misdemeanor theft charge for allegedly stealing meat and cash from Horse Drawn Farm. He was arrested on the theft charge in May. According to court documents, Roadruck broke into and stole various items from two homes, one workshop, a storage shed and a secured campsite between April and late June. DNA tests on two cigarette butts found beneath a riding lawnmower in the storage shed on Bakerview Road tied him to that break-in and theft, and detectives found several items connected to other burglaries near his home.

Intolerance should not be tolerated

W

e like to consider our communities open and welcoming of diversity – but does that sentiment disappear when it’s part of Eastsound’s landscape? The owners of Brown Bear Baking – a gay couple who recently moved to Orcas – received a loving welcome to the island. It was a particularly trying time for David and Lee, as they were in a car accident just one week before their bakery launch date of July 4. The community rallied around them, helping their new venture get off the ground. Yet when they hung up a rainbow flag beneath the American flag on the bakery’s lawn, they received anonymous complaints. As a result, David and Lee took down their flag, a symbol of gay pride that is used across the globe. We are saddened and embarrassed that two new members of our community experienced this kind of narrow-mindedness. We live in a state – and a county – that overwhelmingly approved gay marriage, yet an innocuous, colorful flag was apparently too much for some community members to bear. We would like to remind these anonymous protesters that our island fabric is woven with love, support and acceptance of differences. We would also like to remind our readers – many of whom commented on this story on www.islandssounder.com – that namecalling doesn’t help anyone in this situation. We haven’t heard from those in opposition of the gay pride flag, but spewing vitriol their direction probably won’t change their minds about homosexuality. Having said that, we appreciate our community members’ passion for equality. We hope that our words of kindness can be heard over the low murmur of intolerance.

To the Editor: Put the flag back up Run it up the flag pole. The removal by a third party of the rainbow flag at the bakery is unacceptable. The guys who run the bakery can fly any flag they please. For those who subscribe to the Vladimir Putin school of civil rights, let me say, you are not in the majority. They have been respectful. They deserve respect in return. It is just utter nonsense that it was removed in the first place. Lisa Murphy Eastsound

Thank you to Orcas Fire and Rescue Thank you to Nick Kiniski and all other EMT and firefighter personnel. This is simply a note expressing my unwavering gratitude and deep appreciation for your efforts on my behalf when you and assorted “crew” members came to my aid recently as a result of a 911 call. There was an amazing series of synchronistic events that led you to the door of my home. The eventual outcome was my being airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital’s emergency room in Bellingham. I felt the care and concern of all those folks involved that day. More importantly, you and your crew were efficient and most professional. Between Anne P. and Diane

S., as well as each of the EMTs and firefighters who were present to lend a hand, together your collective quick work ultimately saved my life. Four days of becoming sepsis with E. Coli (to which I was completely unaware) made for a very close call. Please convey my heart-felt appreciation to each and every one of Orcas Island’s capable fire fighters, EMTs and paramedics who answered the call. It is thanks to you all that I am sitting at my desk today, basking in the later summer sun, writing this note of thanks. P.S. Every single resident on this island would do well to sign up for AirLift Northwest. A yearly membership is $79 per household. What a deal! Every member in your household is covered under that membership. Four folks equals less than $20 a year for each individual. Otherwise, the helicopter flight costs $12,000. Brochures can be found at the various doctor’s offices as well as at Eastsound’s fire hall. Information is also available on the web. Please sign up – the life you save may be your own. Our three medical centers are willing to share the use of a portable audiometer so that all children can have timely and accurate hearing screenings. This has been a much needed piece of medical equipment for children on this island. School starts in just a few weeks and I sincerely hope we will have this equipment here soon. Due to the generosity of people like Steve and Jean donating $1500 and the Kiwanis Club and individual members donating $700 we are just $572 short of our goal to purchase this equipment. I am so grateful we live in such an amazing community that takes care of its own. If you feel passionate about the importance of our youth and their education I invite you to donate any amount. Donations can be made to Orcas Island Community Foundation; please specify it is for the audiometer. If you have any questions I would be happy to talk to you. Call me at 376-2363. LETTERS FROM 4 but I don’t know that. I do know that this bird has a strange toolbox for creating information. It must consist of a Ouija board, crystal ball, tarot cards and possibly a magic stick for divining water. These, of course, are not the tools for plausible news or opinion. On Aug. 3, this bird took flight and dropped 400 or more words over the Island Guardian, where they came to life as just another attack on the Conservation District. Comical is all you can call it. The strange bird used the word “though” sixteen times to offer and weave 25 or more predictions piled atop each other, then ended by suggesting all will be fine “after we are all gone.” In our last two Conservation Board elections, this bird put its proper name (Ed Kilduff) on the ballot asking to be elected to this board. He was defeated twice and now is leading a petition drive to blow up the board and do away with it.

Chamber music festival a huge success Those are the words that come to mind for each of us and, we imagine, for every island nonprofit during the times of year when key events and activities are happening. It is because of an island “such as ours” that Orcas Island has become both the destination for many and the proud home for residents where the creation of a summer Chamber Music Festival can happen. A place where the excellence of artistry, stellar performance by musicians of international acclaim, abundant ticket purchases, generous gifts of donors and visitors from near and far, and tremendous volunteer support of individuals and businesses come together to make “Classical Music

with a View” a reality. It is uniquely remarkable. The strength of support is once again demonstrated during these three weeks in August through the standing ovation applause heard throughout this 16th festival season. That applause is meant for all of you who are the foundation and the future of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival. Corrections

Last week’s story “Public Hospital District looks at a new partnership” had an error. Island Hospital does not own Orcas Medical Center. It leases and operates the practice of Orcas Medical Center from the Orcas Medical Foundation. Last week’s “What’s new at the Orcas School District” incorrectly identified the school board chairman. It is Chris Sutton.

Reporter’s notebook

A look inside Doe Bay Fest by CALI BAGBY Staff reporter

Doe Bay Fest offers a chance for visitors to escape the city and listen to quality music all with picturesque views nearby. Locals get a chance to mingle with crowds not typical for most island venues and an opportunity to hear musicians who may not otherwise venture to the isle. For me, Doe Bay Fest offers us that – sometimes mysterious yet at the same time logical – common love for the language of song. From hip-hop to indie rock to Americana to electro-soul, the crowd swayed together with that almost inexplicable union a great tune can inspire in even the most diverse masses. At the fest, toddlers with padded ear protection, 20-somethings in plaid flannels and middle-aged music lovers in comfy chairs joined together, and everyone seemed to be smiling. This year marked the sixth annual Doe Bay Festival presented by Doe Bay Resort and Artist Home. This weekend festival, running August 8 to 11, featured an extensive line-up of musicians, local cuisine, camping and activities. Musicians included Built to Spill, Shabazz Palaces, Ken Stringfellow with the Maldives, Radiation City, Fly Moon Royalty, Cumulus, La Luz, Star Anna, the Torn ACLs, Animal Eyes, Lonesome Shack, Bobby Bare Jr.'s Criminals Starvation League, Quinn DeVeaux and the Blue Beat Revue, You Me and Apollo, Naomi Wachira, Courtney Marie Andrews, Tomten, Smokey Brights, the Grizzled Mighty, Passenger String Quartet and

Mikey and Matty. Every year there are secret acoustical shows at midnight. This year’s Friday night secret show was with Doug Martsch, lead singer from Built To Spill, performing with the Passenger String quartet under the apple tree in one of the resort’s fields Joe Brotherton, the owner of Doe Bay Resort, said the numbers of attendees were similar to previous years. “With over 150 musicians as compared to about 1,000 guests, we continue to have the highest performer to guest ratio of any fest,” he said. Tickets for the concert typically sell out fast. In 2011 tickets sold out in May in just three minutes before a line up had even been announced. Although Doe Bay Fest officially sold out this year, the resort offered 20 extra tickets for $90 for Orcas Islanders who didn’t buy tickets in time. The 40-plus locals I saw at the fest were clearly enjoying their chance to hear wellknown musicians. “We are getting experienced at this and try very hard to minimize impacts on our fellow islanders,” said Brotherton in a press release. After the finale on Saturday evening it was announced that there will be a seventh Doe Bay Fest. The festival may create longer lines at the ferry terminal, but I think for the few days that it exists, I urge islanders to check it out and not only hear the rhythm of the music, but see the power of song binding us all together. Visit DoeBayFest.com for more information and ticket updates.

SHERIFF’S LOG

San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:

July 15: A Shaw Island woman claims that a dog chased her 30-year-old horse to death. The horse, which reportedly collapsed after its flight, was euthanized two days after the alleged event; however, there are no witnesses to the incident. July 20: An outboard motor disappeared from a dinghy docked near the Port of Friday Harbor office in an apparent case of theft. The 3.5-horsepower motor, valued at $1,000, was bolted but not locked onto the dinghy, which reportedly hadn’t been used for about three weeks, at the time it vanished. • An Orcas Island man faces charges of hit-and-run following a two-car collision in the 2400 block of Deer Harbor Road. The 33-yearold reportedly was trailed by the driver of the other car involved in the collision, uninjured in the crash, and then later taken into custody at his Cayou Valley Road home at about 10:30 p.m. July 21: An early evening altercation on the streets of Eastsound prompted the arrest of a 24-year-old Orcas Island man on charges of assault, vandalism and vehicle prowling. The 24-yearold allegedly struck a woman he’d been dating for eight months in an altercation near Madrona Point at about 6:30 p.m., and also slashed three tires on the vehicle of a man, unidentified in the incident report, at the scene. • An early morning traffic stop led to the arrest of an Orcas Island woman on charges of domestic violence assault. The 36-year-old, accompanied by a 28-yearold male passenger at the time, was pulled in the 100 block of Crescent Beach Road at about 6:30 a.m. She is identified as the primary aggressor of an alleged assault, details of which were not described in the incident report. July 23: A San Juan Island teen faces possible DUI charges following a latenight rollover crash near an alpaca ranch on West Valley Road. The 18-year-old, who claims to have lost control of his SUV while swerving to miss a deer, suffered non-life

threatening injuries when his vehicle rolled several times before crashing through a fence and coming to a stop in an alpaca pasture at about midnight. A passerby drove the man to the medical center for treatment, where blood samples were drawn for investigation of the crash. July 26: A Friday Harbor home remodel center opted to press theft charges against a San Juan Island man accused of stopping payment on a $2,781 check used to purchase a set of skylights, and who then ignored repeated requests for compensation. The 35-year-old, also identified as a part-time Gig Harbor resident, was reportedly not at home when a deputy stopped by. A voicemail listing possible solutions and potential charges was later left on his home phone. July 27: A San Juan Island man claims the driver of a Dodge Durango threatened him with a knife during a confrontation over an exitonly sign of a Friday Harbor home remodel center. The 33-year-old, working security outside the center’s parking lot at the time, claims the driver entered the parking lot via its exit, pulled out a knife when confronted,

and then exited through the entrance, and sped away. July 28: An assortment of tools valued at $2,500 vanished in an apparent theft from a shop at an Orcas Island home. The 61-yearold homeowner believes the break-in and theft occurred several days before he noticed the tools were missing. Aug. 4: Allegations of rape prompted a search for a 24-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a woman at her Orcas Island home. The man, identified as a transient and frequent customer at an Eastsound restaurant, reportedly barged into the woman’s Spruce Street home at about 7:30 a.m. and used his strength to overwhelm and assault her. Aug. 6: The owner of a Friday Harbor apartment complex claims a man, identified as homeless, broke into an empty unit, changed the locks and took up residence inside for six days. The 43-year-old reportedly ignored the owner’s written demands to leave and claims that he had no right to be there. The man was elsewhere when a deputy dropped by to assess the situation.

San Juan restaurant catches on fire by SCOTT RASMUSSEN Journal reporter

A swift fire tore through the Downriggers Restaurant in the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 17, leaving the Friday Harbor eatery in ruins. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains unknown, according to San Juan Fire and Rescue Chief Steve Marler. Firefighters were still battling numerous hotspots and outbreaks of fire in the ceiling of the Front Street split-level building nearly five hours after the blaze first was reported. The building is owned by the Port of Friday Harbor. Firefighting crews responded to the scene minutes after off-duty San Juan County Sheriff ’s dispatcher T. J.

MRC FROM 1 ated process necessary to assure that the MRC meeting scheduled for Aug. 7

Granum alerted authorities at about 2:30 a.m. Despite its intensity, firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the upper level of the two-story building and prevent it from spreading to the lower level, which house offices of four other businesses. “I’m in shock,” said Debbie Rishel, who has owned the restaurant for two decades. With the help of many Downriggers workers that were at the scene around 7 a.m., she was able to retrieve a stockpile of food that had been set aside in a storage cooler for the dinner that the high school booster club, Purple and Gold had planned to put on at county fair later in the evening. Purple and Gold member Kris Brown said that

would have a quorum to choose a new chairperson. On July 30, Stephens also suggested that current committee members Tina Whitman, Jim Slocumb

the dinner also served as a fundraiser for Rishel and the Downriggers crew. Islands Oil Spill Association was dispatched to the scene of the fire to help prevent charred debris or pollutants from reaching the harbor. The first wave of fire fighters at the scene were able to battle the blaze from inside the building for only a few minutes, Marler said. It quickly made its way into the ceiling, spreading rapidly and forcing fire fighters to evacuate, he said. Fire fighters from Orcas and Lopez arrived at the scene at about 6 a.m., on the early morning ferry, to provide support. Anacortes Fire Department also dispatched a fire fighting crew.

from new potential members. Five other residents Ed Kilduff of Lopez Island, Laura Severson of San Juan, Margaret Manning of Orcas, Thomas Temple of Crane, and John Geniuch of San Juan – have applied. Under new appointment procedures for advisory committees instituted in early spring by the former six-person council, Whitman, Slocumb and Durland, having served more than two terms on the MRC, were term-limited unless no other qualified prospective appointees applied. The three had reapplied to serve an additional term.

The prior MRC chairman, John Aschoff did not reapply. On Aug. 6, after all appointments were reconsidered, the terms of Whitman, Slocumb and Durland were again extended until Aug. 30, again to assure that the MRC meetings would have a quorum, and the council agreed. However, a quorum was not present at the MRC’s Aug. 7 meeting, precluding any formal action, including the planned selection of a new chairman. An Aug. 21 MRC meeting has been cancelled. Hughes and Jarman reiterated their desire for a balance of perspectives and skills on the committee. No

mention was made of any specific political or ideological balance. Two applicants for positions, Manning and Kilduff, have been critical of county actions and policies regarding planning and land use; two other applicants, Severson, of Crane Island and Temple, of San Juan, have been active with the Island Oil Spills Association. Temple, who has a science background and experience producing and shipping salmon, has not been contacted since he applied. Barbara Marrett, a Port of Friday Harbor commissioner, was reappointed July 30 to a four-year term.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Dinner Kitchen The next Dinner Kitchen is set for Aug. 22. This monthly community dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Church. It is gift to the community and there is no charge. The menu will feature BBQ chicken and all of the trimmings from salads to desserts. There will be vegetarian dishes and foods for the kids. ‘Arthur: The Hunt’ at the Grange The Actors Theater of Orcas Island announces seven performances of the second play in the King Arthur series: “Arthur: The Hunt” by Seattle playwright Jeff Berryman. In 2010, the Actors Theater presented the first play in the series, “Arthur: The Begetting.” At the end of that play, Uther Pendragon and Igraine gave the baby Arthur to the Merlin who sent the young boy into northern Britain for his protection. “Arthur: The

Hunt,” takes place 20 years later. The Merlin is searching frantically for the lost king who will unite Britain and push back the Anglos, Saxons and Irish that raid the many small kingdoms. While he searches, he attempts to build alliances between small kingdoms for self protection. Told from the point of view of Arthur’s half sister, Morgan, the play gives a view into politics, relationships, squabbles and in-fighting among the small, separate kingdoms.

The cast is made up of experienced actors including Cara Russell as Morgan, Creighton Hofeditz as Bledri, Tom Fiscus as Emrys, Freddy Hinkle as King Cadwallan, Kate Hansen as Gwenhwyfar, Zach Schwartz as Cullen and Hunter Bosley as King Uriens. “Arthur: The Hunt” opens on Friday, Aug. 30 with additional performances on Saturday, Aug. 31, Saturday, Sept. 7, Sunday, Sept. 8, Friday, Sept. 13, Saturday,

Sept. 14 and closing night, Sunday, Sept. 15. All performances will be at the Grange, beginning at 7:30 p.m. except the Sept. 8 performance which will be a matinee at 2:30 p.m. This play is suitable for all but very young children. Tickets are $10 and are available at Darvills Bookstore, online at www. orcasactors.com and at the door. For additional information contact the Director, Doug Bechtel at 317-5601.

Park and Rec youth football camp Volleyball champs The Youth Football Season has kicked off with an enthusiastic group of young players. Last week Orcas Park and Rec hosted a football camp for pee wee level players. Twelve players ages seven to 10 came out to learn basics about football including passing, positions, and how to play the game safely. Justin Frausto and Denny Rancourt coached these up and coming football stars. Much to the thrill of the players, several Viking football players also helped with the camp. Beginning Monday, Aug. 19, Orcas Park and Rec starts a youth football camp for players ages 10 to 13.

aleb Klauder and His Country Band create a honky-tonk sound that makes you feel like you should be sitting at a campfire under starry skies in some vast wilderness. At the same time, the songs also inspire you to get on your best boots and cowboy hat and hit the town with your toes tapping. The band’s music is a blend of Americana, blue-grass and classic country western with a contemporary feel. “His music is both nostalgic and fresh, the best of country music in my opinion,” said Orcas Center Director Kara O’Toole. “It is wonderful when he returns to Orcas Center. Everybody comes out in their boots and hats and he shares charming antidotes about the island from the stage, and of course the music is a rousing good time.” You can hear Klauder and His Country Band on Saturday, Aug. 31, 7:30 p.m. at Orcas Center. Tickets are $25, $19 for Orcas Center members and $11 for students. Tickets can be purchased at www.orcascenter.org or by calling 376-2281 ext. 1

or visiting the Orcas Center Box Office. Klauder grew up on Orcas Island inspired by his step-mother’s fiddle playing and other local musicians. Klauder and his childhood friend David Andrews wrote their first song together at age fifteen and continued to write into the future. They eventually founded the band Calobo. Klauder currently works as a songwriter, musician and carpenter in Portland, Ore. As a singer, guitarist and mandolin player, Klauder has spent 15 years touring nationally and internationally with bands like Calobo and the Foghorn Stringband. “As a young adult I realized I wanted to play the fiddle and then it led me to the old-time sound and really old country songs,” said Klauder. “I was drawn into old-time bluegrass and drawn to playing acoustic music.” The musician has played on Orcas a handful of times with various bands and enjoys coming back to his hometown. “We like to get people excited and start dancing,” he said.

His “country” band members include Jesse Emerson on upright bass, Ned Folkerth on drums, Reeb Willms on vocals and guitar, Russ Blake on pedal steel and electric guitar and Sam Weiss on fiddle, all of whom contribute to the vibrant Northwest music scene in various other bands. The concert will feature music from the band’s last two records, new songs that have not been released and plenty of covers. Klauder said he has been inspired by a wide range of musicians, including Bob Marley, Bill Monroe, The Carter Family, Dolly Parton and Hank Williams. This diverse set of artists has helped Klauder develop his own unique style. “We play country music, but not like what you hear on the radio,” he said. “We are rooted in traditional music and even folk music and it’s definitely all dance music.” For more info, visit www.orcascenter.org or visit calebklauder.com to learn more about the band.

Don't miss the summer encore screening of The Met’s presentation of Puccini’s “Turandot” at Orcas Center Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Franco Zeffirelli’s glitter-

ing production of Puccini’s last opera “Turandot,” described by The New York Times as “the Met at its best,” stars Maria Guleghina as Turandot, Marina Poplavskaya as

Liù, Marcello Giordani as Calàf, and Samuel Ramey as Timur. Andris Nelsons conducts. One of the enigmas of Puccini’s “Turandot” is why anyone would seek to marry a man-hating princess with a track record of decapitating her suitors. But the unattainable beauty proves irresistible, luring dozens of admirers to their deaths. Tickets are $18, $13 students, and $2 off for Orcas Center members, and may be purchased at www.orcascenter.org or by calling 3762281 ext. 1 or visiting the box office open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 4 p.m.

The French are coming to the Deer Harbor Community Club – French wines that is. This will be the third annual wine tasting event to help reduce the mortgage on the post office. Four years ago the Deer Harbor community came together to try and keep the post office in the area. The postal officials had previously indicated they wanted to close the post office. The community initiated a fundraising effort and was successful in raising enough money for a down payment for the building. The Deer Harbor Community Club now owns the building and is responsible for maintenance. Work parties are held periodically to make repairs and do yard work. Each year a fundraiser is held to help pay off the mortgage. The wine tasting fundraiser will be held on Sunday, Aug. 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Deer Harbor Community Club. The wines are being provided by Eastsound Liquor and Wine Store. Call 376-5404 for more information.

The final Brown Bag concert at noon on Aug. 28 at Emmanuel Episcopal Parish will feature Orcas Islander Mandy Troxel. After a decade of writer’s block, and having given up performing for what she believed was forever, Troxel surprised herself. Having fallen into what could be described as one of those “dark nights of the soul,” songs started coming. A trusted friend and musician implored her to share them: “These songs are sustenance. You can’t keep them from people. People need to eat.” Bring a Brown Bag lunch to enjoy with friends after feeding your soul on the new songs presented by Troxel. Donations are appreciated to help fund the Virgil Cleveland Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship provides the opportunity for a promising music student from Orcas to attend a music camp in Bellingham.
