Salish Springs residents concerned about dangerous intersection SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

For drivers heading eastbound on State Route 202 between the cities of Redmond and Sammamish, trying to turn left onto 218th Avenue Northeast can be dangerous. In the span of two months this summer, the intersection of SR 202 and 218th Avenue Northeast has seen two car accidents. On top of that, residents in the nearby Salish Springs neighborhood said there have been numerous “almost” accidents throughout the years. “We all have our stories,” said Liz Martz. “It’s insane.”

CONCERNED NEIGHBORS

Martz is among a group of residents from Salish Springs — which is located along 218th Avenue Northeast — who are coming together to voice their concerns about the intersection in unincorporated King County. With a speed limit of 55 mph and no left-turn lane, Martz, who has lived in the neighborhood for 17 years, and other residents said when eastbound cars stop to turn onto 218th Avenue Northeast, it interrupts the flow of traffic — which has increased significantly as the surrounding areas’ populations have grown and more housing developments have

been built. If the cars don’t stop, the residents said drivers will sometimes swerve to the right, driving on the shoulder, to keep going — occasionally ending up in the wetlands located along the highway. Jeanne Brown, who has lived in Salish Springs for 22 years, said there needs to be some kind of mitigation at the intersection because they are constantly having to hear about accidents and “almost” accidents. Linda Teegarden, a 20year Salish Springs resident, agreed. “It’s terrifying,” she said about stopping to turn left [ more STREET page 7 ]

This month, Eastsidebased Friends of Youth (FOY) is partnering with Material Good in Seattle to raise money for its Capital Campaign. For all of September, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Material Good’s Marigold Little Shirleys — orange ceramic vases — will go toward providing housing for homeless youths. FOY President and CEO Terry Pottmeyer said their Capital Campaign is divided into three phases: a homeless youth services center (The Landing) in Redmond; a new Kirkland campus for the organization’s Youth Services Center and Youth Haven; and finally, transitional housing for homeless young adults on the Kirkland campus. The first two phases of the campaign are complete and all that is left is the

transitional housing. Pottmeyer said they will break ground on the first two of four houses for homeless young adults soon. Each house will be for five homeless young adults between the ages of 18 and 21. They will each have their own bedrooms, but will share the common spaces such as the kitchen and living room with each other. This was intentional, Pottmeyer said, so they can learn life skills such as how to share space with others and how to live with people they don’t know and who may not have been their first choice. She added that the location of the houses was intentional, as well, because they are near a park, are accessible by mass transit and near Kirkland’s Totem Lake neighborhood and employment opportunities. The houses are also close to Lake Washington Institute of Technology, University of Washington, Bothell and Cascadia Community College. FOY’s Capital Campaign has reached 60 percent mark — about $4.5 million — of a $7.5 million goal. Kohl’s and Seattle Children’s stress helmet safety at event Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com

Wearing a helmet while riding a bike or skateboarding can mean the difference between receiving a small bump on the head and being seriously injured. But knowing how to pick out the right helmet and have it correctly fitted can be difficult. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, parents can bring their kids to the Kohl’s at 17601 N.E. Union Hill Rd. in Redmond for a free helmet fitting and giveaway. Seattle Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s will host the event. Stacy Helton, Health and Safety Van coordinator for Seattle Children’s, said they will be giving away bike helmets and multi-sport helmets for youths from ages 1-18 on a first-come-first-serve basis. The kids and teens will be fitted by a trained helmet fitter, who will also talk parents through the process so they will

Families will also receive a flier with information on how to do a helmet fitting for reference. Helton said they will also be educating families on the importance of helmets, adding that wearing a proper helmet can reduce the

risk of head injury by 85 percent when involved in a crash. In addition to bike helmets, Seattle Children’s will also be giving away multi-sport helmets, which Helton said are made for more “aggressive” sports such as trick biking, Rollerblading and skateboarding.

Helton said Seattle Children’s has done these helmet fitting events throughout the Puget Sound area and Tri-Cities in eastern Washington for four years. The last time they held an event in Redmond was in 2010. “We’re really excited to go back and serve the

City of Redmond,” Helton said. She said when they were in Redmond the last time, the lines got long really fast and they gave away about 300 helmets. For tomorrow’s event, they are bringing 500 helmets. “I learned,” she said with a laugh. In the four years of the program’s existence, Seattle Children’s has distributed 19,000 helmets and Saturday’s event will push the program past its goal of distributing 4,000 helmets this year. While Seattle Children’s provides the bike and multi-sport helmets in the spring, summer and fall months, Helton said they also give away helmets for skiing and snowboarding during the winter months. “That can really make a difference for (families) financially,” she said, referring to the high cost of skiing and snowboarding equipment. Seattle Children’s holds these events thanks

to a grant through the Kohl’s Cares program. Mike Whatley, district manager for Kohl’s, will be onsite to present Seattle Children’s a check for $162,676 to fund the helmet safety program. “Since 2007, Kohl’s has donated more than $1 million dollars to the hospital, and this Saturday, we are happy to announce our latest gift,” Whatley said. “We are very proud of the incredible work the hospital is doing to keep kids safe in our community.” In addition to providing grants to community programs like the one at Seattle Children’s, Whatley said Kohl’s sells Kohl’s Cares merchandise including books and plush toys. All of the net profits from these sales benefit health and educational opportunities for children nationwide, he said. “Each Kohl’s Cares purchase helps Kohl’s support more than 160 hospital partners nationwide,” Whatley said.

“Should the U.S. make a military strike on Syria?”

Vote online: redmond-reporter.com

Last week’s poll results: “Do you enjoy Jeff Johnson’s cartoons in the Reporter?” Yes: 80% No: 20%

REDMOND

Why America should not make a military strike on Syria I am a 16-year-old American male teenager who is a senior at the International Community School in Kirkland. I write this in the comfort of my suburban home near Lake Sammamish in Redmond. I live with both my parents and my brother. All I have to do is show up to school, do my homework and stay out of trouble. In return, I lead a sheltered life and have everything I could need. Why should I care whether America makes a military strike in Syria? If the United States decides to attack, much of the world would view it as a direct violation of international law, as the Charter of the United Nations only allows the use of force in two cases. One, in the case of self defense in the face of an imminent attack, and two, in the case of a threat to international peace. The international response to an attack would be highly critical and result in unpredictable global tensions. If the United States continues forward, Russia has made it clear that it has a drastic response prepared. But most importantly, an attack on Syria would have personal effect on my life. To the average eye, I am just another American, but on the inside I’m split, right down the middle. My mother is American. Her family goes back more than a century in the state of Washington. My dad is Arabic. He grew up in Algeria and attended the University of Josef Benzaoui

Geneva, where he met my mother. Now I live here, as a cultural dichotomy spliced together as one human. My grandmother on my mom’s side lives here in Sammamish. Everyone on my dad’s side lives halfway across the world on a separate continent. I’ve always wanted to visit, but my parents have always been hesitant because of the split between Western and Eastern cultures. My first thought when entering another country should not be that the people who live there look upon me with disgust because of the actions my country chose to make, actions that brought harm to their people and their way of life. I don’t want to live in a future where one part of my culture, my own family, despises the other This should not be my fate, but it is currently the reality of present day, and will also be my future if America chooses to strike Syria. I believe that America should restrain its hand from entering the Syrian civil war. It

is a conflict taking place in land outside of its own, in a culture its own people does not fully understand. As a teen, this decision has no effect on me, for now. The decisions our country makes now in regards to Syria could potentially light up an area doused in gasoline, and my generation would be left to put out the flames. The international response to a U.S. military strike in Syria from countries like Iran and Russia is unpredictable and would likely prove disastrous for American foreign relations. When it comes down to it, the United States is on the verge of making a huge bet, a bet that no matter how it plays out, can only guarantee one outcome, a loss. How big that loss will be is unknown, but it could very well be a loss greater than our country can afford. Josef Benzaoui is a Redmond resident.

School district board members stifle free speech? At the Aug. 15, 2013 meeting of the Lake Washington School District board of directors, I requested some clarification. Granted, the “official” public comment period had ended earlier. (The board) moved the meeting along through a number of other agenda items. I said, “Excuse me; I thought this was the time for a public hearing on the bond.” (Two board members) began talking over me and interrupting each other and their colleagues. They twice threatened to have me removed. Unfortunately, their rude and dismissive attitude has been demonstrated before: At the Aug. 6, 2012 and Sept. 10, 2012 board meetings several parents and a few young students spoke about the overcrowding at Rosa Parks Elementary School. Their points were well reasoned. They made a concerted effort to avoid repetition. Individual elementary students related personal experiences with poignant impacts of overcrowding and portables.

At the videotaped meetings, one board member declared, “We are not going to solve your problem by fiat.” “It won’t serve your purposes to present the same details every time.” “Continued pressure on the board isn’t going to help us hear your problems any louder.” The audience must have been very disappointed — if not disgusted. America is not likely the first home of many of the adult speakers. And the elementary students certainly did not hear a message of praise and encouragement to continue to speak their young minds. The two board members don’t have to like everything that people in the district might have to say from time to time, but they very well better respect our right to say it!

Restaurant? Bar? Or both? What is the difference between a restaurant and a bar that happens to serve food, but calls itself a restaurant and bar? On Monday night, my family and I wanted to go out to dinner to celebrate my birthday.

Instead of going in to Seattle, I chose to stay in Redmond, to help support local businesses in our community. Being a small business owner here, I know the importance of keeping it local. After much consideration, I chose to go to a place we had yet not tried. I had looked at their website, liked what I saw on the dinner menu and figured we all would enjoy the meal. Upon arriving at the front door, there was a notice — not very large print (especially not noticeable as you drive by) — that said minors not allowed, 21 and over only. Now, this is the second time we have encountered this in Redmond. After reflecting on the fact that the first place was a “pub” and advertised as such, it made sense to me that minors would not be allowed. However, my complaint with Monday’s spot is that it is advertised as a restaurant as well as a bar. Now common sense would say to me that if the word restaurant is in the name that families would be welcomed. Apparently I was wrong. Needless to say we took our business elsewhere, and because of this, we

will not return there either. As a small business owner, we do have occasion to entertain clients and conduct business meetings at local establishments. While it may not be what some consider a large amount of money that we spend on these outings (we’re not Microsoft after all), it is a substantial amount for our business every quarter. It is said that for a bad experience a customer has, they will tell at least 10 to 15 people, those people will then in turn tell others and so on. As a business owner, this does not sit well with me, as I’m sure it does not resonate well with other

business owners either. Lastly, Redmond is not Bellevue. I expect to find places catering to the over-21 crowd in Bellevue due to the demographic that they are trying to appeal to. And that is great. I appreciate having the option of being able to go to places where I will not encounter a crying baby, or other possible kid disruption of my meal or evening. That being said, Redmond is promoting itself as a family friendly community — as it should. There has been a huge increase in the number of families moving here — just look at the enrollment (and overcrowding) at the local schools. Maybe the establishment we left on Mon-

day does have enough of a core clientele to keep them in business for the long run, but it would seem to me that a simple solution would be to have a portion of the restaurant set up for the over-21 crowd and another section for the families that would like to enjoy what they have to offer, as well. If nothing else, make it a little more clear on the restaurant as well the website, that you are a “bar” that happens to serve food and are catering to a certain demographic. The tiny print at the bottom of the main page is easily overlooked, especially when I can search for your menu page and bypass the main page.

Pacific Music plays its final tune

Weyands to close their downtown store after 26 years in business SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

Pacific Music in Redmond has provided music lessons for students of all ages since it opened its doors in 1987. With a background in the wholesale side of the music industry, owners Gary and Kathy Weyand had made connections throughout the Pacific Northwest at many of the local stores, so when Pacific Music opened, Gary said a music teacher he’d met through his previous job contacted him to see if he could give his private music lessons at the store. And things just went from there. “The thing that we’re most proud of is over the 26 years, we’ve taught over a third of a million music lessons,” Gary said. “We’ve sort of taught Redmond

how to play.” But now after more than a quarter century of serving the community, Pacific Music will be closing its doors at the end of this month. He said there are a number of reasons why they are closing, including the economy, the increase in online shopping and the store’s new location at 15935 Redmond Way. The store had been previously located at the corner of Cleveland Street and Leary Way but Gary said they had to move about five years ago because the city tore down the building to put up condos. “Progress is a double-edged sword,” he said. “Our previous location was a better location.” One customer who was in the store Monday morning agreed. “It was a lot easier to turn into,”

Customer Devin Pattison (left) admires a sticker he receives from Pacific Music owner Gary Weyand. The store in downtown Redmond will be closing by the end of this month after 26 years of business. SAMANTHA PAK, Redmond Reporter he said, referring to the fact that drivers can’t turn left into the Pacific Music parking lot and would have to find a way to turn around on Redmond Way if they were coming from the northeast. Gary said since they announced their closing, they have had many customers coming in to express their sadness and wish them luck. “It’s really nice,” he said. Nicole Arriaga, a 31-year-old Seattle resident, has been taking violin lessons at Pacific Music for a little more than a year and said she was sad when she heard about the store’s closing. “I love it here,” she said. “Everyone’s so nice and my teacher’s

Gary said Pacific Music teachers give lessons in a variety of instruments including guitar, drums, piano, clarinet, flute and ukulele. They also offer voice lessons. The number of teachers at the store has fluctuated over the years, but they usually have around eight and provide lessons for 300-500 students per week. The residents were also surprised when they learned that the school bus for Evergreen Middle School drops students off on the far side of the highway, forcing them to cross both lanes before entering the neighborhood. Kathryn Reith, communications director for Lake Washington School District (LWSD), said when dropping kids off on a two-lane road such as SR 202, the bus driver looks at the traffic to make sure it is safe for the students to cross. “They’re always looking out for our students,” she said. The bus also has flashing lights and the stop arm that comes out to stop drivers, Reith added.

SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE

The residents would like to see a traffic light and left-turn lane installed at the intersection as well as a slower speed limit along SR 202. Brown said if they can’t get that, then they would at least like to see signage indicating the upcoming left turn. Martz said she and her neighbors are working to contact King County elected officials and local state lawmakers to make them aware of the issue in hopes that something will be done. The issues at the intersection were first brought up in the 1990s when Montessori Children’s House (MCH)

HOW THINGS CAN GET DONE

Courtesy Photo opened at the entrance to the neighborhood at 5003 218th Ave. N.E., but nothing has been done. Head of School Jennifer Wheelhouse said the school stated at a recent neighborhood meeting that they would be willing to invest in a “school ahead” sign on the highway. “But upon further investigation, (we learned) we can’t install any signage on a state highway,” she said. Wheelhouse said the school also put in a stop sign at the end of its driveway and modified its arrival schedule, stag-

gered arrivals and pushed its start time so that the majority of students did not arrive during the morning peak traffic hour from 7:45-8:45 a.m. “We do feel that the state should address the safety of the 202 corridor between 520 and Albertson’s,” she said. “Since MCH opened its doors in 1994 the traffic along this corridor has increased substantially.” Wheelhouse said in addition to the area’s increased development, the additions of The Goddard School and LWSD’s STEM school on 228th Avenue

giving people a tangible gift in return for their donation “would make them feel more connected to the cause, and Little Shirleys, were born out of this idea.” The partnership between FOY and Material Good began this summer. Pottmeyer said she already knew Larson and Burman’s family and when she heard about Material Good’s partnerships with nonprofits, she approached Burman about the two of them working together. “She was thrilled to partner with us,” Pottmeyer said. cause each month. Ten percent of the proceeds from all sales nationwide of the specific-colored vase during the designated month will be donated to that charitable organization. Product tags for that organization as well as signage at retail locations and a social media campaign will reflect the partnership. Material Good founder and CEO Lauren Burman said other organizations they have partnered with include the Fred Hutchinson Obliteride campaign, Hope Heart Institute, Path with Art and Cancer Lifeline. “The partnerships are about both fundraising but most of all creating awareness about the different organizations,” Burman said. She added that Material Good will often hold events at its Seattle studio during that month with the community or participate in its partners’ annual fundraisers somehow, such as having Little Shirleys as centerpieces. Material Good began in honor of Burman’s grandmother Shirley Larson, who died of cancer. According to the company’s website, Burman decided to do something positive to honor her grandmother — raising money to support cancer research and patient services. But she believed

Matt Beaulieu, a north King County area traffic engineer for Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), said they have been made aware of the issues at the intersection and are looking into things. He said the easiest way for them to start a discussion about a traffic issue is to hear from the community. “No one knows that area better than the people who drive it day in and day out,” he said. Beaulieu said once they learn about an issue, WSDOT will start an internal investigation — looking at collision history, traffic volume history and what else is going on along the road. If it is inexpensive to address the issue, he said they can use money from their low-cost enhancements fund to pay for it. If the project looks like it will be more expensive, Beaulieu said it may require legislative action, which would take longer. He said the cost of a project depends on a number of factors involved, including the possible need for environmental mediation, purchasing a rightof-way or installing a traffic light. Beaulieu said he will have more details regarding the intersection of SR 202 and 218th Avenue Northeast in the next week and a half or so.

question, because the answer can help you make the right investment choices. Before you know your risk tolerance, you’ll want to make sure you first understand the nature of investment risk — the risk of losing principal. This risk is especially prevalent when you invest in stocks, because stock prices will always fluctuate — and there are never any guarantees about performance. Of course, a decline in value does not mean you need to sell; you can always hold on to the stock with the hope that its value will bounce back. And this can certainly happen, but again — no guarantees. How you respond to this type of investment risk will tell you a great deal about your own risk tolerance. Of course, no one, whether he or she has a high tolerance for risk or a low one, particularly likes to see declines. But people do react differently. If you’re the sort of person who can retain your confidence in your investment mix and can focus on the long term and the potential for a recovery, you may

Learn as much as you can about the area you are interested in: Demographics, schools, parks, shopping and entertainment. Covenants and regulations may be found on the local government sites. This can help you eliminate the need for the neighborhood review. Pre-inspect the house before making an offer. It takes time and some cash, but it allows making an offer without an inspection contingency (one of the bigger stumbling blocks in real estate transactions), or stops you from making an offer altogether and wasting your time on a house that has too many issues. Communicate with the seller. Ask questions. It is easier to have an offer accepted if you know what the sellers prefer and are more likely to accept. Some offer details and concessions may even not cost you any money but can make a difference. Good luck with your house hunting. The reward is definitely worth it!

benefiting from low interest rates and still low prices. The obvious one, the price: Make the best offer you can afford. It may mean offering over the asking price. If your goal is to get the house, saving a few thousand dollars becomes secondary, and a slightly higher price will add just a minor bump to your mortgage payment (use your mortgage calculator to check that). If you are willing to compete with other offers, include an escalation clause (it will allow you to beat other offers by a set amount up to a certain limit). It is about your financial standing: Get pre-approval from a reputable lender. Sellers want to know you are a qualified buyer and the deal will not fall apart because of financing issues. A 20 percent down payment or better will show that you are likely to complete the purchase. An all cash offer eliminates the financing contingency altogether. Though not for everyone, an all cash transaction can be refinanced past closing. Earnest money deposit can show that you are committed to the purchase — make it a statement by making a larger deposit (consult with your broker on the amount).

www.redmond-reporter.com [ brandy from page 10] well have a higher tolerance for risk. But if you find yourself losing sleep over your losses (even if, at this point, they’re just “paper” losses), becoming despondent about reaching your goals, and questioning whether you should be investing at all, then you may have a low tolerance for risk. Even if you determine you have a high tolerance for risk, you almost certainly should not load up your portfolio exclusively with stocks. If the stock market enters a prolonged slump, you could face heavy losses that may take many years to overcome, causing you to lose significant ground in the pursuit of your financial goals. Conversely, even if you discover you don’t have much tolerance for risk, you won’t want to invest only in supposedly “safe” vehicles, such as certificates of deposit (CDs). During those periods when rates on CDs and similar instruments are low, as has been the case in recent years, your interest payments from these investments may not even keep up with inflation — meaning that, over time, you could end up losing purchasing power, which, over the long term, can be just as big a risk as market declines. Ultimately, then, you’ll probably want to let your risk tolerance guide your investment choices — but not dictate them with an “iron hand.” So, if you believe you are highly tolerant of risk, you might have a somewhat higher percentage of stocks in your portfolio than if you felt yourself to be highly risk-averse — but in any case, you’ll likely benefit from building a diversified portfolio containing stocks, bonds, government securities, CDs and other investments. While this type of diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio.

Golf Fore Red tournament raises $21,000 for Bellevue Hope Heart Institute

King County officers arrest 292 drivers during DUI enforcement campaign the Auburn, Bellevue, Black Diamond, Burien, Clyde Hill, Covington, Des Moines, Duvall, Enumclaw, Federal Way, Issaquah, Kent, Kirkland, Maple Valley, Mercer Island, Newcastle, North Bend, Port of Seattle, Redmond, Renton, Sammamish, SeaTac, Seattle, Snoqualmie, Tukwila and Woodinville Police Departments and the Washington State Patrol participated in the extra DUI patrols, with the support of the King County Target Zero Task Force. The extra patrols were funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety

Commission. These patrols are important because August is one of the deadliest months on Washington’s roadways, including all causes of traffic fatalities. These and all extra patrols are part of Target Zero—striving to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington by 2030. For more information, visit www.targetzero.com. Dozens of women went home with prizes, merchandise and inspirational messages from the sixth annual Golf Fore Red tournament, but the grand prize winner was The Hope Heart Institute, this year’s beneficiary. Tournament director and co-founder Mary Robinson said sponsors, donors and players helped raise more than $22,000 during the recent event at The Golf Club at Redmond Ridge. Net proceeds increased nearly 17 percent from last year. Robinson, the president of Golf Fore Red, and other representatives from the allvolunteer tournament committee presented an oversized check totaling $21,000 during an awards ceremony at The Hope Heart Classic (The Hope’s own tournament). The Bellevue-based nonprofit organization focuses on cardiovascular research and education, including programs tailored to women. (Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women.) Golf Fore Red was established by Robinson and a longtime friend, Shelley French, to honor their mothers, who both died at young ages from heart

The results are in from the recent Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over DUI enforcement campaign conducted from Aug. 16 through Sept. 2. In King County, preliminary numbers show that 292 motorists were stopped and arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI), and statewide, law enforcement officers arrested 1,420 drivers for DUI. Last year in King County during the same time period, officers on routine and extra patrols arrested 374 people for DUI. In King County,

Golf Fore Red participants present a check to the Hope Heart Institute following a recent tournament. Courtesy photo conditions. This year’s tournament sold out four months in advance, marking the third consecutive sellout. The popular all-women event draws a diverse field, with most players attired in red, the color that symbolizes awareness of heart disease and support for women’s heart health. Awards went to firstand second-place teams with low net and low gross scores. Individuals who won skills competitions at various holes also earned trophies and prizes. In a new competition this year, twosomes and foursomes were invited to decorate their carts based on the event’s “heart healthy” mission and theme. Along with on-course competitions, the event

featured prize drawings and a silent auction. All golfers and volunteers received a reusable Hope Heart Institute shopping bag that was filled with assorted merchandise, gift cards, and healthy snacks from various donors. A traditional part of the awards luncheon that follows the scramble tournament is a program with guest speakers. Cherie Skager, interim executive director of the Hope Heart Institute, helped welcome the crowd as she highlighted some of the organization’s programs and services, and how tournament proceeds are used. The 2014 tournament is scheduled for July 26. Online registration is expected to open sometime in February.

Redmond High football Spotlight

Steckler scores four times in Mustang victory Andy Nystrom anystrom@redmond-reporter.com

Bryce Steckler trampled on new ground last Friday night. It was a satisfying place to be and he brought everyone along for the ride. “Playing Junior Mustang football, I scored a few touchdowns here and there, but I don’t think I’ve ever scored four in one game,” said the 5-foot-10, 185-pounder at Monday’s practice. Once the Redmond High senior tailback got a taste of the end zone, he couldn’t stop during the Mustangs’ 28-20 season-opening home victory over Mercer Island High. “It definitely feels good getting a few touchdowns, but I can’t really take credit for that without giving my line credit. I’ve never had such good holes running and that was one of their best performances I’ve ever seen,” Steckler added about his offensive linemen Nathan Moon, Josh Mason, Cristobal Pulido, Ian Seabrooks and Logan Little. Steckler said he was nervous throughout the day and prior to game time last Friday, but once Redmond received the opening kickoff and rolled up the field, everything changed. “I knew that everyone had just become fired up because that just lifted everyone and everyone became so relieved,” he said. “It was just great, it was fun.” [ more stangs page 18 ]

Each charity we choose as our Charity of the Month is known, trusted and respected locally or nationally for its high level of integrity, leadership in its field and helping achieve the goals it has outlined for the people it serves. This month, QFC is proud to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as our September Charity of the Month.

The Patti Robinson Kaufmann First Connection Program is a peer-to-peer program that links newly diagnosed patients and their families with trained volunteers who have experienced blood cancer firsthand and can understand your experience.

For over 60 years, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has been dedicated to improving the lives of leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancer patients through ongoing research and patient support. Every year LLS invests millions in research and has been a driving force behind many of the breakthroughs in treating blood cancer patients. Those breakthroughs have helped find ways to cure some patients or provide additional years of quality life to others. Those breakthroughs have included advancements in chemotherapy, the use of bone marrow transplants, the discovery of cancer-causing oncogenes, the development of new “targeted” anti-cancer drug therapies and immunestimulating therapies and the development of new effective drugs that help patients survive longer with a better quality of life.

The Trish Greene Back to School Program for Children with Cancer helps children and youth cope with life after treatment and teaches parents, classmates, teachers and healthcare professionals how to deal with the issues surrounding childhood cancer.

In addition to funding research, patient support is also a key part of LLS’s mission. Here in the Northwest the Washington/Alaska chapter of the LLS offers many free educational and support programs for patients, their families, caregivers and healthcare professionals. Here are two of those as described on the Washington/Alaska LLS website.

Disease and treatment guides for Hodgkin’s lymphoma and NHL.

The Lymphoma Education Series featuring the latest information about each disease type and treatment options.

The local LLS offers many other services including family support groups, online support groups, online chat and a patient financial aid program. In addition, the national LLS offers many other resources including free informational publications and education programs such as:

LymphomaLinks, a monthly eNewsletter with the latest news, research updates, clinical trials and events sponsored by LLS.

eNewsline, a monthly eNewsletter with the latest information about blood cancer research and treatment.

If you would like to join QFC in supporting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, please hand a donation card to your checker. For questions or comments please contact Amanda Ip at amanda.ip@fredmeyer.com. Thank you Paid Adver tisement

Steckler rumbled into the end zone from 20 yards and 4 yards out in the first quarter, and from 14 yards and 1 yard out in the second quarter and staked Redmond to a 28-7 lead at halftime. Mercer Island scored on a 54-yard pass in the first quarter. Mercer Island then scored on a pair of 3-yard and 5-yard runs in the third and fourth quarters, but Redmond held on for the nonleague victory. Redmond’s core of “Superfans,” who wear hats, wigs and capes and carry flags, were out in full force, as was the rest of the Mustang faithful. “It’s always nice to win at home, especially with our fans because they bring a lot of energy to the game and they’re just as fired up as we are,” Steckler said. “I just love looking back at the crowd, after we won, just having them be there and cheering.” Redmond senior kicker Nick Kopak converted all four of his PATs on the night. Steckler ran the ball 20 times for 118 yards, junior Nick Konkle amassed 57 yards on 14 carries and Red-
