Redmond man and son in hospital after alleged drug overdose The 37-year-old man and 4-year-old boy remain in stable and sedated condition after being found unconscious Tuesday morning STAFF REPORT

Police tape is strung in front of the house on the 14100 block of Northeast 72nd Street in Redmond where a man and his 4-year-old son were found and taken to area hospitals Tuesday afternoon for a suspected drug overdose. ANDY NYSTROM, Redmond Reporter

A 37-year-old Redmond man and his 4-year-old son were taken to area hospitals Tuesday afternoon for a suspected drug overdose. Redmond police and fire personnel responded to the 14100 block of N.E. 72nd St. at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a 911 call from the 4-year-old’s mother, who had come home to find her

husband and son breathing but unconscious. Drug paraphernalia was located at the scene indicating that both father and son had been injected with suspected heroin. Redmond Police Department (RPD) spokesperson Lt. Charlie Gorman said the suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia found at the scene have been collected as evidence. “It may take some time for

lab exams to be completed to determine what these suspected substances are,” he said. On Thursday, Gorman said the man and boy remain in stable and sedated condition and police have not been able to speak with either of them. “This is an ongoing criminal investigation,” he said. “There have been no arrests and we have no reason to believe that anyone else is involved in this incident.”

Residents can speak up at Recreation Building Master Plan meeting SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

Before Susan Langsley moved to Redmond, she lived in Portland, Ore. and while she was there, one of the things she was really impressed with was the city’s Southwest Community Center. With two pools to accommodate swimmers of all types — from lap swimmers to kids — community meeting and

party rooms, gymnasiums, fitness rooms and more, she said the facility was “fabulous.” “It was just a great community resource,” Langsley said. But when she arrived in Redmond seven years ago, the Education Hill resident said she found that the Redmond Pool at Hartman Park could

use some improvements. On Oct. 3, Langsley and the rest of the Redmond community will have the opportunity to share their thoughts at an upcoming public meeting on the City of Redmond’s Recreation Building Master Plan. At the meeting, which will be from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Bytes Cafe at City Hall at 15670

N.E. 85th St., there will be a presentation and community conversation regarding the future of the city’s four recreation buildings: the Redmond Pool, the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, the Old Fire House Teen Center (OFH) and the Redmond Senior Center (RSC).

A ROAD MAP FOR FUTURE RECREATION

Katie Anderson, deputy di-

rector for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, said the master plan will provide them with a road map for future of the four buildings. “These four buildings are in various states of conditions,” she said, adding that the master plan may also look at the type of programming the city offers, but things are still at the conceptual stage. To help with this process, the city has hired a team of consultants made

up of NAC|Architecture, Ballard*King Associates and Water Technology Inc. Anderson said five concepts will be presented to the community. Possible sites for a new aquatics community center will also be presented for the community to evaluate. Public feedback and input will be used to narrow the options to one recommended concept, which will be unveiled at a community [ more FUTURE page 5]

New Redmond ‘Super Sport’ 24 Hour Fitness to open Oct. 12 Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com

In just a few weeks, Redmond will have one more option for those looking to get into shape or take control over their personal fitness. On Oct. 12, 24 Hour Fitness at 7320 170th Ave. N.E. in Redmond will open its doors to the community. Although there are two 24 Hour Fitness locations in Bellevue and one in Kirkland, this will be the first gym the company has opened in Redmond, which will be housed in the old Top Foods building. Fitness manager Christy Wondercheck said the new

“Super Sport” location is 50,000 square feet and significantly larger than the surrounding locations. “It’s a lot bigger,” she said. “It’s the largest we have in this area.” As a “Super Sport” location, Wondercheck said the 24 Hour Fitness in Redmond is not only larger, but also offers more amenities than other locations. She said these include towel service, more Group X fitness classes such as Zumba, group training and suspension training (TRX). The soon-to-be-open gym will also have more exercise machines — some with personal viewing screens so people can watch whatever

There will also be pickle ball and volleyball available for anyone who wants to play. Parking at the new club is available in the lot in front of the building. Wondercheck said 24 Hour Fitness has been in the greater Seattle area for 15 years and they decided to open one in Redmond because they were looking for a location that would be accessible to people. And being open 24 hours makes it easy for people to go to the gym whenever they can. “We do make it convenient for people with the 24 hours,” Wondercheck said. The 24 Hour Fitness in Redmond will have more than 100 employees and Wondercheck’s job is to oversee the club’s fitness programs. She said she will work with 20-30 trainers, training them to make sure they are coming up with

Redmond North Little League has dedicated the baseball diamond at Redmond Ridge Park “Jackson Roos Memorial Field” to honor Jackson’s kindness, competitive spirit and love of baseball. Located at 22915 N.E. Alder Crest Drive, Redmond Ridge Park is the official home field of Redmond North Little League and

serves approximately 30,000 residents in the Union Hill/ Novelty Hill area. Because there is only one baseball diamond, and it’s often unplayable in wet weather, the league must rely on facilities outside the community to host games and practices. “The new turf surfaces will mean that hundreds of kids and their families can use their neighborhood park all year round,” Klein said. “They’ll be able to spend time outside at the field instead of in the car traveling. Staying in the area will also help local businesses and the Redmond Ridge economy.” Work is expected to

begin in October to install a turf infield for the baseball diamond and a multi-sport turf surface for the large field that will accommodate two Little League or softball diamonds and a full-sized field for soccer and lacrosse. The project received a combination of private donations and grants from the state’s Recreation & Conservation Funding Board and the county’s Community Partnership and Grants (CPG) program. “The leadership we received from Sen. Hill, Council Member Kathy Lambert, King County Parks & Recreation and the state Recreation &

Conservation Office helped us reach our fundraising goals,” Klein said. “They have been instrumental in our success.” Redmond North Little League’s “Renovate the Ridge” campaign will continue to raise funds for park amenities. Field renovation is expected to be complete by spring 2014. “If you’re a Redmond North Little League family, you think you might be one some day, or you’re a supporter of youth athletics and our community parks, we hope you’ll join us at our ‘Heading for Home’ celebration,” Klein said. “It’s been a team effort all the way.”

Legislators need to listen to public on transportation needs It’s not surprising that a large crowd turned out on a recent Tuesday night in Bellevue at a transportation forum by state Senate leaders. It’s also not surprising that they aren’t happy that the Legislature didn’t pass a transportation bill in the last session. Like all things in politics, there’s lots of blame to go around for that legislative lack. Yes, the House did pass a transportation bill last session. That doesn’t mean it was perfect or solved all the pressing problems. And, yes, the Senate coalition didn’t pass a version of its own, so no compromise could be worked out. Adding to the problem was that too many legislators were holding back their vote on a transportation bill in an attempt to pry something else out of the session. When the session ended, many people were left wanting — including residents throughout the state. It’s easy to pick at any piece of legislation. Nothing is ever perfect. But the reality in this state is that more money needs to be spent on transportation and that money is going to have

Thank you for supporting children and educators Dear citizens of the Lake Washington School District community, My three children are currently attending the newly rebuilt Ben Rush Elementary. As I have “gotten to know” the new school a little bit myself and observed camaraderie between teachers, students and patrons in efforts to plan for and endure the building process, I am extremely grateful to live in a community that values education. Thank you for supporting both children and educators. See you at recess.

Be careful when you park I noticed the ample parking lot behind QFC, Staples and Trader Joe’s on Redmond Way has signs stating “permit parking only.” This lot is for employees of all those stores, not their customers. I wanted to warn anyone who tries to park in this large lot. The fine is $30 — so park around the front and don’t get caught! If you don’t pay within 15 days, the amount goes up to $60. Read the towing signs and do not disregard them. That probably applies to all of Redmond business parking lots!

From the Web: Animal crossing on Northeast Novelty Hill Road • I hope they will put a camera up so we can see if it actually works. I was amazed at the night

Cheryl Strong Magnuson

• Enough money for a wildlife crossing, but years have gone by and Redmond has not done anything to make it safe for children to cross at Einstein Elementary, Northeast 116th Street/179th Place.

Stacie Baumeister

• Can we ticket the animals if they do not use the crosswalk? In my opinion, this was/is a waste of money. And we wonder why we have a trillion dollar debt.

Heather Nihan Wood

• WOW...I wonder if the contract workers are sending the animals back into the woods asking them to be patient until the project is complete. While we’re at it, let’s put another roundabout in on Novelty Hill Road, too....that was such a brilliant idea.....NOT.

Terri Morrow Dickson

• This is equivalent to Alaska’s “bridge to nowhere” project. Maybe the family of four bears in the area will appreciate it if you put up signs they can read. Why not fix traffic issues on Hwy 202 instead? — where there are REAL TRAFFIC accidents every COUPLE of weeks near 218th Avenue Northeast. We built a bridge with no history of accidents!!!!! How stupid is that? It would have been better to keep quiet about this ridiculous waste of taxpayer dollars. Which politician asked for/approved this colossal waste of funds? I didn’t see that in the article.

SWIMMING ON BORROWED TIME

The highest need in the city is a new aquatics center and Anderson said they are focusing on downtown sites for a possible new location. Langsley, who is an “on-and-off-again” regular swimmer, said the current Redmond Pool is inaccessible for family swim time and is very crowded. One of the things she liked about the community center in Oregon as well as the Paul Derda Recreation Center in Broomfield, Colo. — which she has also visited — is all the different rooms available for various uses. “They’re just really, really pleasant places to go to,” Langsley said. Mark Hickok, recreation division manager for the City of Redmond, acknowledged that Redmond Pool is outdated. He said it was built in 1970 and while they were able to update a lot of things on the surface such as cleaning the pool and retiling when the city took ownership in 2010, the pool still needs a lot of work behind the scenes such as the building’s pipes. “We’re on borrowed time,” he said about the pool’s lifespan of 40 years. “We’re maintaining it the best we can.” Hickok added that the pool’s current location is very tight on parking and things get particularly difficult when there is a swim meet. Although the city is the

MORE SPACE, MORE DIFFERENT SPACE

Of all the city’s recreation buildings, the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center is the oldest, having been built in 1922. It became a community center in January 2000. Hickok said because it used to be a school — as the name indicates — the building does not accommodate all of the city’s needs. For example, holding fitness classes in a school classroom doesn’t always work. It is also difficult to hold “wet classes” such as paint classes for kids in a room with carpet because it’s difficult to clean. “We make the best of it,” Hickok said. Another issue the city currently has is a deficiency of gyms. Hickok said they only have the one gym at the community center, which the city has been leasing from Lake Washington School District since 1997. This partnership with the district extends beyond this as the city utilizes many of the school gyms throughout Redmond. “We use a lot of gyms in the schools...but (the schools) need them for things, too,” Hickok said. In community surveys, Anderson and Hickok said people have told them they would like to see things such as an indoor running/walking track, more gyms, additional multi-purpose spaces and fitness spaces. Anderson said people have also said they want to see a theater for performing arts. At the moment, the city is looking at various options that range from investing in and expanding its current recreation buildings to moving locations and building new buildings.

and previously served as the Redmond fire station and city hall. Anderson said the building became a teen center in 1992 in response to feedback the city received from teens at a youth summit. “Teens wanted a place to share their music and talent,” she said. Ken Wong, teen and 50+ program administrator for the city, said the teen center is outdated and structurally may not meet their needs in the future. Teens have been involved in the stakeholders’ meeting and Wong said they want a teen center that is located downtown or in a central area where teens can easily access it.

“What the teen center needs and what we have seen trending for teens,” he said, “is a space that they can call their own, a place where they can share their talent — performance space — and structured programs that they can be involved in or learn from.” Wong said how this will look in the short term and long term will be determined by what the community shares as its interests. “Teens need a space that they can own and make their own and be able to be learn and share,” he said. “The Old Fire House Teen Center has been that place and as we look to the future and evaluating the condition of the

site, we need to make some changes and (now) we have time to do that.” Like the community’s teens, Anderson said the seniors in the community also want a place specifically for them and to have ownership of their center. In coming up with the five options that will be presented next week, Anderson said they held focus groups with users of all the buildings, including the RSC’s Senior Advisory Committee, which

acts in an advisory capacity to staff in assessing participants’ needs and planning RSC activities. The current RSC was built in 1990 and program coordinator Karen Phillips said they want the community to have the opportunity to bring their ideas forward at next week’s meeting before commenting. Plenefisch steps out of comfort zone, gains rewarding career Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com

When Irene Plenefisch made the transition from working at SonoSite, Inc. to Microsoft Corp. in Redmond three years ago, she wasn’t sure if she was making the right choice moving from one industry to another. She had spent 15 years in the medical devices field and that knowledge base was not transferable to the world of technology. But the skill set she had gained from working with the government at her previous company was transferable and she quickly found that she didn’t miss her old job. “It’s been great,” she said about her job as government affairs director for Microsoft. “I’ve never really looked back.” Plenefisch works with local governments on issues important to the company and its continued growth as well as issues important to the state, including transportation, business climate, economic development and quality of life. In her position, she said she works specifically with local governments, including the cities of Redmond, Seattle and Bellevue as well as King County and a few counties in central Washington. She said there are other people within Microsoft who work with the higher levels of government. In addition to her work with Microsoft, Plenefisch is in her second year as cochair of the Seattle Chamber’s Policy Council — which works with the local business communities to speak with

Irene Plenefisch is a government affairs director for Microsoft Corp. in Redmond. The Kirkland resident works with local governments on issues that are important to the company and its continued growth as well as issues important to the state. Samantha Pak, Redmond Reporter one voice in a “cohesive fashion” to lawmakers on what they can do to provide a healthy business climate. Plenefisch — a Kirkland resident — is originally from Ann Arbor, Mich. She received a bachelor of arts degree from St. John’s College in Maryland and a master of business administration from the University of Michigan. She and her husband moved to the northwest in 1992. While in school, she studied marketing and economics, which didn’t exactly prepare her for the work she does now.

A Women in Business event will be held from 5:307:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the VALA Art Center, 7303 164th Ave. N.E., Redmond Town Center. To RSVP, call Ellan at (425) 867-0353. Limited space available.

“I have an unconventional background for a person in government affairs,” she said. Plenefisch’s career path began at SonoSite, a diagnostic ultrasound manufacturer, with a technology angle related to reimbursement but grew into an advocacy role

regarding policy affecting reimbursement. When this happened, she questioned branching out and whether she should stick to something she knew. But her decision to step out of her comfort zone has been very rewarding. “Government,” she said, “I think, is fun.” In specifically working with local governments at Microsoft (she worked on the federal level at SonoSite), Plenefisch said she has enjoyed getting to know the mayors, city council members and other staff and

officials as she works more closely with them and gains a better understanding of their needs. “It’s more personal,” she said, comparing it to working at the federal level. “It’s more collaborative.” Although Plenefisch enjoys her job, it does come with some challenges — the biggest of which is balancing a career with parenthood. The mother of three said while it may sometimes be more difficult for women because of the historical roles they have held in the past, being a working parent can

be challenging regardless of gender. When her children — who range from 11 to 17 in age — were younger, Plenefisch spent a few years working part time. She said during that time, she didn’t feel as if she was giving her all to either part of her life, but in the end was glad she continued working. Plenefisch said she and her husband have covered for each other over the years. “We’ve shared the responsibility of taking care of the family both economically and physically,” she said.

Lachmann seizes opportunities to advance her career Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com

Andrea Lachmann began her career in commercial real estate about 10 and a half years ago, working as an administrative assistant for a real estate investment trust based in Southern California. Since then, she has worked her way up the career ladder — and the West Coast — to become a senior real estate manager for asset services at CBRE Inc. in Redmond. “As opportunities arose, I made sure I seized the opportunity to take on new responsibilities,” Lachmann said. The 36-year-old moved to Redmond six years ago and has been at her current company for eight months.

In her position, she oversees the leasing and management of commercial buildings in Redmond and the Eastside for a CBRE client. Through the leasing side of her job, Lachmann leases space to Andrea Lachmann companies ranging from startups to large corporations who may be looking to add satellite operations. On the property management side, she said she works with a variety of vendors and contracts to ensure the buildings are well maintained, safe and “exude a professional appearance.” It’s a lot of work and Lachmann said it is

definitely a team effort. “This volume of work is not done alone,” she said. “Assignments are accomplished with the help of my CBRE co-workers in the Redmond office.” Lachmann received a bachelor of arts degree in environment and resource studies with a focus in public policy from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. She also holds a real property administrator accreditation from the Building Owners and Managers Institute and is a licensed broker in Washington state. For Lachmann, one of the biggest challenges she has faced has been juggling the demands of her career with her family and civic duties. The mother of two — whose children are 8 and 3

— has been involved in the Redmond business community since she and her family moved to Washington. She said this involvement has contributed to the achievements and advancements in her career she has experienced, but it has not been easy, especially as commercial real estate — specifically property management and leasing — is more than a “9-to-5 job. “Juggling all of those important pieces can often be tricky,” she said. Lachmann said she has received a lot of support from her family, her company and more, which has made the juggling easier. She added that CBRE also promotes a work-life balance. “They do more than just promote it,” Lachmann said. “They actually back it up and equip you to do so.”

What makes me different? I am the only woman in the state of Washington with a DACNB degree. I am licensed and able to determine which specific areas in the brain are weak, then I use chiropractic techniques (and some innovative techniques) to send stimulation down a weak pathway and make it stronger. I am also a believer in giving homework so you can strengthen the pathways at home. The first appointment takes 2 hours in my office and includes the first treatment. What are you waiting for? Chirpractic care is like dental floss for the spine. I would love to be the chiropractor for you and your family.

Forest stewards honored for their environmental efforts The City of Redmond recently held a Forest Steward Appreciation Picnic at Idylwood Beach Park in Redmond. The event was organized by the Green Redmond Partnership to honor local volunteers for their environmental efforts on behalf of the city. Marilynn Leland and Jim Downing were honored for a culmination of years of hard work and collaborative efforts put forth to ensure that Redmond’s park legacy and environmental health will continue to thrive for many seasons to come. Downing, a steward at Grass Lawn Park, said his experience working as a volunteer has both nurtured valuable partnerships with other citywide organizations and created opportunities to grow and learn on a personal level. “A while back, when the City of Redmond sponsored a program in my park with the Native Plant Society,” he said. “It was an intensive, immersive experience and the knowledge I gained from it helped me acquire a better understanding of what was in the forest — what should be there, what shouldn’t be there — as well

Marilynn Leland (left) and Jim Downing were honored at a Forest Steward Appreciation Picnic in Idylwood Beach Park in Redmond. Courtesy photo as planting applications. We’ve had so much support, and I couldn’t ask for a better volunteer organization.” Redmond Mayor John Marchione, was also on hand at the evening’s festivities to honor the program pioneers and acknowledged that their influence transcends simple efforts at environ-

mental upkeep. “They are stewards of more than our forests,” he said. “Their hard work ensures that we retain our commitment to our open spaces — our forests, trails, streams and creeks; allowing natural habitats to survive. The combined hours they’ve devoted, which includes all volunteers

participating in work parties led by all forest stewards — past and present — totals 5,914 hours. That’s remarkable.” Leland, who serves as a costeward for Viewpoint Park with fellow honoree Kaytlyn Sanders, said the experience creates an opportunity to not only preserve and ensure the vitality of the area’s natural environment, but also connect with other community members. “There’s only so much funding, and if we don’t volunteer, things don’t get done,” Leland said. “I’ve made a commitment to this, but it just amazes me the number of people who will come out and give a few hours. Everyone has busy lives — and their own yard work. I think that’s pretty remarkable.” To learn more about how to become a forest steward or to volunteer in one of Redmond’s parks, visit www.greenredmond. org.

Fast Facts

Redmond currently has 12 active forest stewards. Volunteers at work parties led by forest stewards have donated a

total of 3,037 hours of their time this year. The total volunteer hours at work parties led by past and present forest stewards amounts to 5,914. The total number of hours contributed by all volunteers over all years of Green Redmond is 13,307, meaning forest stewards have facilitated close to half (44 percent) of the total volunteer program by hours. Of the 7,000 trees and 20,000 total plants that have been planted, 2,100 and 9,600, respectively, have been planted by volunteers, meaning forest stewards and the volunteers they have led account for a third of all acreage enrolled by the volunteer program as a whole. Of the 168 acres enrolled over the years, 33 have been enrolled through volunteer work (the rest was by paid crews). Three of the city’s current forest stewards (Leland, Sanders and Downing) have been devoting their time and talents to the program since its first orientation five years ago and the city’s retention rates continue to hold strong.

Woman accused of illegally moving child to Japan RAECHEL DAWSON Reporter Newspapers

A Kirkland mom and former Microsoft senior human resources manager was charged in King County Superior Court last week for firstdegree custodial interference, a felony, after she illegally moved her 5-year-old son Maximus to Japan. The state requested Chie Kawabata, 46, be held on a $100,000 bail due to the “serious concern about the wellbeing and whereabouts of (the child) as well as the defendants’ unwillingness to follow court orders,” charging documents state. After a 2012 divorce from her husband Kristoffer Morness, the biological father of Maximus, Kawabata recently packed up her Kirkland home in the north Rose Hill neigh-

borhood, bought a one-way ticket to Japan and directly violated the parenting plan when she made the life-changing decision to uproot her son, court documents state. Kirkland police were dispatched to her home on July 31 for a welfare check after Morness, who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, could not contact Kawabata through Skype after he missed his weekend visitation. Morness had called the daycare where his son attends but the daycare provider hadn’t seen his son or Kawabata that week, documents state. During the welfare check, an officer saw collapsed cardboard boxes and kitchen contents sitting on a table in a manner that was “consistent with a resident in the process of moving out.” The Department of Homeland Security confirmed

Kawabata and her son boarded a Japan Airlines flight to San Francisco on July 26 to Haneda Airport in Japan. Japan Airlines confirmed their tickets were one-way tickets. Two days later, Kawabata emailed Morness, admitting to being in Osaka, Japan after taking an extended leave from work through August. “She said that ‘the torment I have endured in the recent years have left me (and therefore [Maximus]) emotionally ruined and have forced my hands to take this step that I wish I did not have to take,’” the documents continue. Morness filed a temporary parenting plan that granted him custody of Maximus and if the two return to the U.S., Kawabata is ordered to hand over her son within 72 hours. Morness has not seen his son for more than one month.

Morness objected to Kawabata moving with Maximus to Japan in 2012 after Kawabata’s first attempt. Following a trial, the court granted Morness’s objection because “the detrimental effects of relocation outweigh the benefits … court denies relocation in this case, considering the needs of the child, the lack of good faith, the unavailability of alternatives and all the factors the court has laid out.” Kawabata has no criminal history other than driving violations. Morness created the website www.chiekawabata.com explaining the story from his perspective. “My goal is to have Chie Kawabata return to the Washington state jurisdiction with Maximus and face the courts,” his website says. “Maximus needs the protec-

tion of the courts and needs his father. Anyone seeking to hire or work with Ms. Kawabata should be forewarned.” Morness alleges Kawabata has no regard for the rule of law and that she is “prepared to do anything to anyone, including her own child, in order to get her own way.” Morness states on the website the family moved to the Seattle area after Kawabata got the Microsoft job but their marriage fell apart in January 2011. He then moved to his native Vancouver, British Columbia and “endured two horrifying years of litigation initiated by Kawabata.” Morness said in a phone interview on Sept. 20 that Kawabata accused him of child abuse; however, he said the courts and police were able to refute those claims. “It’s just really frustrating

to do everything by the book and then get screwed like this,” Morness said. He added that he doesn’t think Kawabata will abuse their son but because of her frequent job changes, he worries Maximus will be affected by constant changes. “Even before we separated, she was a workaholic, Max had daycare and nannies. She never actually spent time with him,” he said. “She provides for him, but I don’t think she’s a good parent.” Morness said he’s done a lot of research on the Japanese legal system but doesn’t have faith much will be done, although he has received some good tips on her whereabouts. “The fear is I won’t see him until he’s grown up,” Morness said, adding he plans to build a website for his son that includes family photos and an explanation so that he can find answers when he’s older. Morness has repeatedly tried to contact Kawabata without success.

Amazon volunteers participate in King County for United Way’s Day of Caring

About 80 Amazon volunteers clean up and improve the habitat at the Marymoor Park BirdLoop in accordance with Eastside Audubon last Friday as part of King County for United Way’s Day of Caring. Other Redmond area projects included about 50 AT&T volunteers and about 30 PCL and Astronics volunteers doing clean-up work at Friends of Youth and VFW Post 2995, respectively. Overall in the King County area, more than 12,000 volunteers worked on community service projects by renovating community centers, reading to children, filling backpacks and nutritious meals for hungry kids to take home for the weekend backpack program and more. Providing Complete Plumbing & Heating Services in King County Since 1964

Heating Season is Here!

Check out our Furnace Tune-up Special Below!

Q/A | with David Brown – Owner, Fox Plumbing & Heating “How did Fox Plumbing & HeatQ ing get started?” :

A

: Virgil Fox started the company in 1964; even as a young man, I loved “hands on work” and was proud to be a tradesman. I joined the company in 1973 and thrived in the environment of high standards and hard work. By 1979 I was half owner of the company, purchasing it in its entirety in 1983. I was dedicated to the value of quality service at a fair price and understood the importance of keeping every customer, since then I’ve expanded but maintained our deep commitment to integrity and quality work. Our customers tell us time and time again that we are the most trustworthy plumbing service in King County.

Q

:

“What plumbing services do you offer? And do you do both repair and installation?”

A

: If it has to do with pipes and water, we have the skilled workforce to both fix ailing systems and install new systems. We work in old and new homes as well as in businesses and commercial environments – we are experts in fixing old systems. We’re not always looking to sell people something new; if it can be fixed we fix it. We offer a full range of plumbing services from sewers to hot water tanks. We help our customers save money by offering plumbing system tune-ups, which are continually growing in popularity because they save people on the cost of repairs by catching problems early. We’re very excited to announce that

we have expanded and now service and install all types of heating, furnaces and air conditioning, too. We are committed to our customers and to our staff, providing on-going training to make sure our technicians are simply the best trained in the business.

the problem. After an emergency many of our customers participate in our $99 annual Plumbing Tune-up program, which saves them hundreds even thousands of dollars in the long run and they are seeing great improvements in their plumbing systems.

Q “Do you guarantee your services?” A :

: Absolutely, we have the best written warranties in the business. We provide our customers with the right price for the service and then guarantee the work. We have received the best service award from Angie’s list for over 6 years and are always top rated. Our customers will tell you about their experience with Fox Plumbing and Heating and we encourage them to do so. 80% of our new business comes from current customer referrals, we’re proud of this record and intend to continue it, every customer is important to us, I’ve built this whole business around satisfied customers, when we say “it’s all about service”, we mean it.

I have used FOX Plumbing several times over the years for various problems. Prior to calling them I had used 2 other local companies and found them more interested in selling their products than fixing my problems. FOX has always been responsive, they explain what needs to be done, why and how they will do it--and at a reasonable cost. I own an older home and their staff know their stuff, they are polite and thoughtful of the customers needs. - Nancy Travis, Seattle

is working with animal shelters across Washington state for this event in order to promote and help them grow their adopter, donor and volunteer bases — and to raise awareness of the good work that they do on a daily basis for animals in need. Homeward Pet Adoption Center and other local shelters will be opening up their doors to host an open house and bring community members in as honored guests. More than a dozen shelters across the state will be participating this year. The Pawsitive Alliance website, www.pawsi tivealliance.org, has a list of what fun activities

and specials participating shelters have planned for their open house pawties. In Washington state, approximately 60,000 kitties, puppies, cats and dogs are euthanized each year due to lack of space. Pawsitive Alliance is working hard to bring awareness to the needs of local shelters and their homeless animals. Part of the success of the open house event will be driven by uniting the cause, elevating awareness in your community, and bringing attention to each shelter and each animal that shelters care for. Sandra Cook Special to the Reporter

Feeling as though you are stuck in the middle between caring for your parents and your own children? Today’s Sandwich Generation is feeling the squeeze between the needs of their teen or adult children who require help and their aging folks who require care. It can be difficult enough to pay your bills, reduce your debt and set the ball in motion for retirement, but even tougher when you must juggle assistance of your elderly parents and children. Nearly half of all Americans age 55 and older report they expect to provide some form of support for aging parents, relatives and adult children, according to a recent Gallop Poll through SunAmerica Financial Group. Family assistance is a growing need in this country and one of those things most

retirement-aged people are beginning to plan for. A less than favorable economy has prompted an even heavier squeeze on the Sandwich Generation, as seniors struggle to make ends meet, manage their medical bills and watch their home value plummet. Adult children are losing their jobs, moving back home with their families in tow and struggling to keep their heads above water. The “squeeze” is becoming more gripping than ever before.

Finding Balance with Parents and Children

There are ways for the Sandwich Generation to assist their parents and children without losing sight of the good relationship that you must cultivate. With your parents, discuss openly long-term care insurance, take advantage of tax breaks and inquire with your employer about eldercare services and employee benefits. It may

surprise you to find out that some major employers such as Microsoft offer service locators for the elderly and provide benefits to cover caregiving support. When parents are in need of daytime care that you cannot provide unless you quit your job, investigate adult day care options, also available at Northshore Senior Center and/ or some memory care communities. You don’t have to quit your job in order to care for your aging parents, but you do have to investigate the options available. There are a number of ways to avoid the stress and strain of relationships, no matter how hard you are feeling sandwiched. Preventative care is sometimes the best remedy available. Know where your local support groups are. Always have a back up plan. What would happen if you needed to be out of town for work or had an emergency hospitalization? Who would take care of your children and parents? Considering respite/ short term stays at assisted-living communities is an option. Most places in the Seattle area offer this. It is like reserving a hotel

bonding time and family vacations without having to travel with an elderly in need of care. Respite/ short term stays are usually for one week to 30 days and all inclusive costs range from $150 to

$200 a day.

Bear Creek School girls soccer Spotlight

Two-time defending state champs are kicking for more success It was a tension-filled match, much like the games some teams will be playing during the state tournament two months from now. The two-time defending state 1B/2B champion Bear Creek School girls soccer team knows all about those types of contests. On Monday, the Grizzlies summoned that experience with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Bush School on a Sara Hastings goal late in the second half. “She’s a game saver,” senior Caroline Bridgwater said while smiling at sophomore Hastings after the match. Last year, Hastings also scored the winning goal in a crucial victory over Crosspoint Academy. “I’d been taking a lot of shots, but none of them had been going in — so I just didn’t give up,” said Hastings, an attacking center midfielder. “It’s definitely exciting.”

Added Bridgwater, a holding center midfielder, about the Grizzlies’ performance against Bush: “I think this game was one of those kind of games where it was all about heart and just putting your head down and finishing the game.” Bear Creek got an early goal from senior Brittany DiGenova, but Bush pushed back and tied the match at 1-1 in the second half. Bridgwater acknowledged that the Grizzlies made a few mistakes in the back and were a little shaky at times, but they banded together, stayed positive and pulled out the victory. The Bush win raised Bear Creek’s record to 4-1-1 at the Reporter’s deadline for this issue. Last year, the Grizzlies racked up a 15-4 overall record and defeated Napavine, 4-0, in the state final. PREP ROUNDUP

DiGenova and Hastings all agree that Bear Creek soccer plays a special part in their lives. It’s not only a sports experience, but the girls are bonding on and off the soccer pitch, as well. “I think in practice, we really lift each other up, try to be encouraging and not put people down,” Leszynski said. “We build our morale and hope that we can pull out the wins because of our good attitude and helpfulness to the others on the team.” Along with DiGenova and Hastings, Leszynski has also scored this season along with Whitney Isbell, Hailey Morgan, Hannah Bauermeister and Abby Linnenkohl. Bridgwater, who had 23 assists last season and four in Bear Creek’s recent 8-0 win over Mount Vernon Christian, added: “I definitely feel this team comes out every single day and works as hard as they possibly can, and so I’m just really thankful to be able to play soccer with my best friends.” As Bridgwater finishes her

Sen. Andy Hill named Legislative Champion by Children’s Alliance

The Children’s Alliance has recognized Sen. Andy Hill of Redmond as one of its 2013 legislative champions for his work to end childhood hunger. Hill secured additional funding for the State Food Assistance program, which provides grocery money to legally residing, lowincome immigrant families. “The Legislative Champion Award is the highest honor our organization can give to a lawmaker. We are pleased to recognize him as a Champion for Ending Childhood Hunger for his work to restore food assistance to families in need.” While the House of Representatives did not include additional resources for food assistance, Hill’s Senate plans boosted the program’s funding by $9.4 million for the next two years. Hill, the Senate’s budget leader, successfully kept the funding in place during final budget negotiations with the House.

“Ensuring children don’t go hungry is essential for our state’s future and working on behalf of State Food Assistance was a great way to do it effectively,” said Hill. “A big thank you goes to the Children’s Alliance for its dedication to this cause. Because of these steps more students will stay healthy and able to be productive in the classroom.” The Children’s Alliance is the primary children’s advocacy group in Washington. Each year it recognizes state lawmakers who achieve results in the organization’s priority policy areas.

Michael (Mike) Elwood Davies

Michael Elwood Davies, 77, passed away on Thursday September 19, 2013. He was born to the late Willis and Mabel Davies on April 3, 1936 in Redmond, WA. Mike graduated from Lake Washington High School in 1954, served 8 years in the US Army Reserves and married Cheryl L Davies on December 4, 1959. They lived together while raising their three children in Kirkland, WA. Mike had his own commercial construction company for over ten years and then worked as a Project Superintendent for Baugh Construction until his retirement in July, 1995. Mike was a master of his profession and took great pride in his accomplishments. Mike and Cheryl retired to Goodyear, AZ in 1995 where they became very involved in the Pebble Creek Community. Mike enjoyed gardening, woodworking, golfing, cooking, and building sets for the Pebble Creek Theatre. He loved to vacation by cruise with his wife. He was a sports enthusiast enjoying football, baseball and hockey. Mike is preceded in death by his two daughters, Cynthia and Lisa Davies. He is survived by his wife of 53-years and three children, Mark Davies of Littleton CO; M. Shawn and Toni Davies of Peoria,AZ; and Rodney and Diane Davies Poepping of Eagle River, AK. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Tana Davies, Taylor Davies, Taryn Davies, Michael Poepping, Lucy Poepping, Alexis Davies and Delaney Davies. There will be no public service, Mike’s favorite charity was Children’s Hospital.

breast cancer research that will ultimately help lead to prevention and a cure. Currently, 91 cents of every dollar spent by BCRF is directed towards breast cancer research and awareness programs, such as one of the grants that Nestlé Pure Life is helping to fund, aimed at findings drugs to prevent breast cancer in those with the BRCA-mutation. To join Nestlé Pure Life in supporting BCRF and make a direct donation supporting research efforts, visit www.bcrfcure.org. Another easy — and fun — way to show your support and raise funds year round is by participating in walks and runs. Gather a group of friends and family and find a local walk or race that raises funds for an organization tied to research or finding a cure. It’s a meaningful way to get directly involved.

Healthy Lifestyle

BCRF-funded research has indicated that there is a positive relationship between exercise, a healthy lifestyle, and breast cancer risk. Among other things, it is important to maintain a healthy body weight through exercise and a well-balanced diet. One weight maintenance trick is to stay hydrated and eat plenty of fiber-rich foods like almonds, beans and apples, which make you feel full and can help you avoid overeating. This Breast Cancer Awareness month, there are many great ways to support causes that fight this all-too-common, lifethreatening disease. Find out more by visiting www. cancer.org.
