City launches Cre8tivZoo music series Styles range from acoustic rock to theatrical performances SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

As numbers began to dwindle at the City of Redmond’s Arts in the Parks series, organizers started looking for other ways to bring music to the community. Joshua Heim, arts administrator for the city, said people have told them they want to see more of a nightlife and things to do in the evening hours. Community feedback has also indicated that people would like more urban activities. These two factors — combined with the success of a previous event utilizing an empty storefront — have resulted in Cre8tivZoo, a new music series presented by the city that will take place at different downtown locations. The first in the series was Sept. 26 at City Hall as part of the public forum for Downtown Park planning. The remaining five performances will be held at 8 p.m. every other Saturday beginning Oct. 12, with the final show on Dec. 7. The performances will be utilizing various indoor spaces throughout downtown Redmond: Veloce Apartments at 8102 161st Ave. N.E., VALA Art Center at 7303 164th Ave. N.E. and Soulfood Books at 15748 Redmond Way. All events are free. Heim said the goal of Cre8tivZoo is to try and activate more urban spaces and provide more downtown programming for the community. In addition, he said, the city also wanted a way to develop music programming and entertain-

A 37-year-old Redmond man was booked into King County Jail Friday night and has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and other related charges after a suspected drug overdose with his 4-year-old son last Tuesday. Redmond police and fire personnel responded to a house in the 14100 block of Northeast 72nd Street at 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 24 after receiving a 911 call from the boy’s mother, who had come home to find her husband, Eric Emil Lehtinen, and their son breathing but unconscious. Lehtinen’s wife came to the residence after she was unable to reach her estranged husband by phone. She found the two in Lehtinen’s bed apparently asleep, according to King County court documents. Lehtinen had vomit coming out of his mouth and the boy was lying on his back, partially covered by a blanket. When Lehtinen’s wife lifted the blanket, she discovered a syringe — loaded with a dark liquid — on the boy’s

chest with the needle pointed toward his neck. Both father and son were unresponsive. Court documents state that Lehtinen was taken to EvergreenHealth and his son was taken to Seattle Children’s Hospital. Both remained in stable and sedated condition throughout the week. Their condition had improved by Friday night, according to Redmond Police Department (RPD) spokesperson Mike Dowd, when Lehtinen was transferred to police custody. Lehtinen is responsive but refusing to tell police what happened on Sept. 24. Lehtinen’s son is still at Children’s, undergoing treatment for a drug overdose. “Medical staff located puncture wounds on his body indicating recent needle sticks,” according to court documents. There was one wound on the left side of his neck and multiple wounds on his buttocks. An initial toxicology screen of the boy’s blood showed the presence of heroin, ketamine, morphine, codeine, norketamine and lidocaine. According to the court [ more OVERDOSE page 10 ]

The last time Lori Longthorne attended a Seattle Sounders FC game was when she was in high school. She was growing up in Federal Way and the team played their games in Tacoma. Now 49 and a Redmond resident of about 20 years, Longthorne will be attending her first soccer game in more than two decades. Longthorne will be one of two dozen individuals to be honored at Wednesday’s game at CenturyLink Field against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC for their work in raising money and awareness for breast cancer.

“This is my first Sounders game I’ve ever been to,” she said of attending a match at CenturyLink Field. “I’m so excited.” Longthorne was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer in 2005. She went through two surgeries to remove a number of tumors, followed by six weeks of radiation. It’s been eight years that she has been cancer free but she still remembers how long it took her to feel better. “It took forever for my muscles to heal,” she said. As an avid motocross racer, Longthorne was also eager to get back on her bike after her surgeries. And this year, she combined her love for

Local bus routes affected by Metro update Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com

Three times a year, officials at King County Metro Transit take a look at their route schedules and update their service. The most recent update occurred on Sept. 28 and included streamlined service on Interstate 90, better timed connections and more bus trips in downtown Seattle. “Ridership continues to grow and these service adjustments are intended to better serve our customers and attract new riders,” said Metro Transit general manager Kevin Desmond in a press release. Six of the 55 affected routes run through parts of Redmond. The 216 bus, which runs from the Bear Creek Park and Ride to downtown Seattle, has been revised to operate via Highlands Drive Northeast and Issaquah Pine Lake Road Northeast, serving the Issaquah Highlands Park and Ride. The route will no longer operate in North Issaquah between I-90 and the South Sammamish Park and Ride. In addition, eastbound trips to the Bear Creek Park and Ride will stop at the Eastgate Freeway Station, Bay 4. A new 219 route has also been added as part of a restructured network of service on I-90. King County spokesperson Jeff Switzer

said this was in response to the dynamic of demand for service on I-90 as there are some routes that are very full while others are almost empty. The route begins at Redmond Way and 185th Avenue Northeast and ends in downtown Seattle. The 221 bus, which runs from the Redmond Transit Center in downtown to the Eastgate Park and Ride, has seen a reduction in trips. Switzer said this is because it has had a low ridership. Metro, he said, will take the resources dedicated to this route and shift them toward routes with overcrowding and reliability challenges. Route 224, which goes from Duvall to the Redmond Transit Center via Redmond Ridge, has been revised to operate between Redmond and Duvall only. The bus will also serve an expanded portion of Redmond Ridge via Northeast Cedar Park Crescent and Eastridge Drive Northeast. Weekday service frequency on the 224 between Redmond and Duvall will also improve to about every 90 minutes. Switzer said the bus’s trips will coincide with the new Snoqualmie Valley Transportation Shuttle’s schedule, which provides service between Duvall and Fall City. The 249 bus, which runs from the Overlake Transit Center in Redmond to the South Bellevue Park and Ride, has had lower rid-

ership during the day so mid-day service has been reduced from every 30 minutes to every 45 to 60 minutes. And finally, the 250 bus, which goes from the Overlake Transit Center to downtown Seattle, now has four fewer trips. Switzer said two trips in the morning and two trips in the afternoon have been canceled and resources have been shifted to where rider demand is higher. All of the changes made to the 55 Metro routes, Switzer said, are no-cost improvements to increase productivity and put buses where riders need them most. “Working with the budget we have is the challenge,” he said. “We have a lot of customers out there and we try to serve them as best we can.” In a press release, King County Executive Dow Constantine added, “Transit demand keeps growing, and Metro continues to create efficiencies to maintain bus service within the funds available.” In addition to a fall update, Switzer said Metro updates its services around February and at the beginning of June, as well. He said this is because travel patterns are different at different times of the year for various reasons. For example, whether the University of Washington is in session affects Metro ridership greatly.

[ SOUNDERS from page 2] Hospital. Longthorne, whose father died of lung cancer four years ago, has also been involved in Relay for Life. She said it is important to have a community when going through cancer. “Sometimes we don’t know what someone going through (cancer) means,” Longthorne said. “All we have to do is ask.” Erin Curtis, a community relations intern for the Sounders and Seattle Seahawks, said for Wednesday’s event at the soccer game, Longthorne and 23 other breast cancer survivors will be brought onto the field during the pregame show. They will receive red-carpet treatment, be presented with pink scarves and honored during the flag ceremony. The honorees — along

with one guest each — will also be seated in a special section of the stadium to watch the game. Curtis said the Sounders and the Seahawks have been holding these ceremonies to honor breast cancer survivors for the last few years as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, although it depends on whether they have home games in October. The Seahawks’ ceremony honoring survivors will be Oct. 13. Curtis added that they also try to “pink out” the stadium at these events with pink lights and players wearing pink apparel. She said it is important for the teams to hold these events to show their gratitude for the fans and honor the community. “It’s really our opportunity to thank our community and our fans,” she said.

YWCA Here are some things you may not know about the YWCA of Seattle and King and Snohomish Counties. • It’s one of the largest providers of emergency shelter in the Northwest. • It operates a food bank that serves over 1000 people a month. • It helps struggling families to stay in their homes and helps others find housing. • It helps prepare people for careers in banking and business and information technology. • It helps older people find work. • It supports mental health counseling. • It supports domestic abuse programs. These examples are just a small sample of a large variety of programs our local YWCA supports as part of its mission to “advance the quality of life for women of all ages, races and faiths, and their families.” The YWCA has five major program areas in which it tools, support and ongoing services for women and families so that they can live productive, independent lives.

Those five areas are housing, emergency, employment, health and youth. Within each of those areas there are multiple programs that address various needs and issues of the YWCA’s client population. For instance, in the employment category there are programs that help women • to prepare for and find careers in the banking industry, • with job search, training and placement services, • with on-the-job training at a government or non-profit agency, • maintain financial self-sufficiency through education, assistance and training • who are older or veterans find employment • dress appropriately for interviews or new jobs. The YWCA of Seattle and King and Snohomish Counties offers over 40 programs such as these to help women and their families. Men are also included in some of these programs such as Pathways to Work, a program that offers classes to women and

men in Snohomish County designed to help them get back to work. Helping families is a major focus of many of the YWCA’s efforts. That help includes getting mental health counseling for individuals, helping homeless families find temporary or permanent shelter, helping single moms get back to work, providing child care for young children, ages 1 – 5, encouraging leadership and confidence skills in young women, offering employment and education opportunities to teens and young adults, and more.

The YWCA operates 19 locations in our area – 7 in Seattle, 4 East King County, 5 in South King County and 3 in Snohomish County. The YWCA has been helping women and families here in the Northwest for over 100 years. If you would like to donate to the work this great organization is doing for women, on your next trip to QFC please hand a donation card to your checker. The optimistic, secure path toward education funding Washington’s K-12 and university students are no longer captive to a publiceducation system struggling to meet basic needs and receiving a declining share of the state budget. Instead, the recent legislative session made education funding a priority for the first time in years and put us on course to finally honor this state’s primary constitutional commitment to students and schools. However, when this year’s session convened there was no guarantee any of that would transpire. In past sessions, lawmakers repeatedly short-changed education by adopting unsustainable budgets. This year a projected $900 million budget deficit, coupled with the state Supreme Court’s decision mandating new education dollars, convinced many that nothing more could be done to grow early learning, restore K-12 funding or stop double-digit increases in college tuition. But a new bipartisan makeup in the state Senate offered a unique chance to escape bad habits of the past — shortchanging education, skyrocketing tuition, accounting gimmicks and unsustainable budgets — and try a new way to achieve better results. The question remained, though: could this bipartisan coalition hold together? Could we demonstrate that common-sense bipartisan efforts could succeed? Most thought it would never happen, I’m sad to say. Prevailing wisdom held that the environment was simply too hostile, that any true bipartisan efforts at reform and re-prioritization would surely fail. Even some of my closest friends said they couldn’t imagine us achieving our goals. Did we succeed? Absolutely. As the Senate’s chief budget writer — with a rigorous focus on re-prioritizing spending, living within our means and long-term sustainability — I was able to lead the effort to profoundly change how the state plans and spends taxpayer dollars. Working across the aisle, we fundamentally shifted Olympia’s budgeting priorities. With additional revenue from a Sen. Andy Hill

growing state economy and a disciplined approach, growth in spending was re-prioritized 4:1 for education over non-education completely reversing the 1:2 ratio of the past 30 years and a critical step toward re-balancing and resetting state budget practices. Children entering public schools this fall will benefit from an additional $1 billion for basic education. College students aren’t seeing tuition increases for the first time in nearly 30 years. And students on waiting lists for high-demand computer science and engineering degrees will have more opportunities because of an additional $18 million to expand enrollment slots. Once our commitment to education was met, we crafted a balanced budget that has the state living within its means — meaning no new general taxes. In fact, more than $600 million of temporary taxes expired on schedule, surprising cynics who simply didn’t believe a tax could be just “temporary” in Olympia. Finally, we created a budget that balances over four years, instead of the usual 24 months. After years of deficits, our new budget projects a $1.3 billion surplus in 2017. That’s quite a swing, and demonstrates a new way of doing business in Olympia. Our creditors agreed: in July two rating agencies upgraded Washington’s credit outlook from “negative” to “stable,” citing our balanced budget as one reason

for their increased confidence. Was this truly a bipartisan budget? Unquestionably. With 89 percent of the votes cast in the Legislature favoring the new spending plan, it received more votes than any budget in the past 20 years — a stark contrast to the usual party-line voting, and proof that bipartisanship can actually work. I’m not a career politician. I sought office three years ago because I believed there was a need for common sense in our budget process and for bipartisan solutions to our most difficult problems. While some people in politics become cynics — occasionally with good reason — I choose to be an optimist, refusing to believe something is impossible simply because someone says it can’t be done. And I believe we have now led Olympia toward a new way of thinking — one more in line with the priorities of the people who sent us there and one which puts the state’s future on a more secure path.

Redmond resident Sen. Andy Hill represents the 45th Legislative District in the Washington state Senate — which includes Duvall, Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish and Woodinville — and serves as chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee. He was the chief budget writer, negotiator and sponsor of the final bipartisan state budget.

One way parents foster motivation and encouragement in their children is by using praise. Some believe copious amounts of praise are necessary to build selfesteem. Others will tell you that praising children too much is bad for them. So the question is, “How and how much should parents praise?” Here are some helpful tips for a positive praising experience: 1. Tell the truth. Even young children can see right through false praise. Your best strategy is to be honest and diplomatic when commenting on your children’s ability. If your child is learning to dive and does an awkward belly flop, don’t say,“What a beautiful dive!” Instead

try: “I see you’re working on your diving.” By not defining the action as good or bad, you’re being truthful while letting your child know he or she has your attention. 2. Point out the positives. It’s easy to fall into the pattern of pointing out your children’s mistakes while overlooking their successes. However, when you make an extra effort to praise your children’s achievements and good behavior, you’ll help reinforce those qualities. Perhaps say, “You really focused on completing your Kumon worksheets today. You should be so proud of yourself!” Tell your children that they should be proud of themselves and it will inspire them to do the same thing again. 3. Focus on the feat.

Young children have a hard time distinguishing between who they are and what they do. Instead of commending your child by saying, “You were good in the car,” praise the action with, “Your behavior was very calm and quiet on the trip.” This helps young children understand the behavior that earned them a compliment. 4. Use body language. Nonverbal cues are a great way to express your approval. A smile or a hug can be less distracting than words. If you say, “You’re reading very well,” your children will stop to look up at you. But if you give them a gentle rub on the back, they’ll get the message that you’re proud of them and keep reading. 5. Emphasize the effort, not the outcome. When

your children are learning a new activity, don’t comment on how well they complete the task. Instead, compliment their enthusiasm and progress. For example, “You worked really hard in soccer, and I noticed you’re starting to dribble the ball better.” By being genuine and specific with praise and encouragement, you can build your children’s selfconfidence while teaching them about the importance of effort and hard work. Try to eliminate persistent negativity in your household and put the focus on all the wonderful, positive things your children are doing instead.

times what is perceived as a case of ADHD is really an incompatibility between a students’ learning style and the teaching style of the classroom. This is not meant to discount the children that truly have ADHD, but rather to highlight the fact that although educators have been researching and talking about learning styles for more than 30 years, there still hasn’t been enough change to make the classroom environment more conducive to the hands-on learner. This type of hands-on learning is often referred to as kinesthetic. If a student with this learning style is in a classroom where the teaching style is auditory and/or visual, this could be a crisis waiting to happen. Expecting this child to sit, listen and watch most of the day presents them with a nearly impossible task. This student will need multiple opportunities to move, get up and touch during lessons, and whether the teacher likes it or not, they will find a way to do so. Consequently, it’s not at all uncommon for students with this learning style to end up being perceived as behavioral problems. Thomas Edison is an example of a misunderstood, hands-on learner. when trying to raise welladjusted children. Children often pick up on what they see and not what we tell them. They are very sensitive to hypocrisy; if you use profanity in front of them, how will they feel when you scold them for repeating what you’ve said? When telling them what is right and wrong, explain to them why that is so.

When his teacher told his mother that Thomas was inattentive, fidgety and slow, she knew he wasn’t getting what he needed and she pulled him out of school. She taught him herself until the day he went to work for the railroads, and he went on to invent a railroad timing and signaling device, which was used for nearly a century. This story expresses the importance for parents and professionals to be savvy advocates for students. If a student learns best by doing and moving, then it is our job as educators to adapt our instructional style to meet their needs. Every child deserves an accommodating learning environment, even if that means making changes as big as switching teachers or schools.

tinyurl.com/ou392jh) offers four tips for raising welladjusted children: • Start making necessary changes ASAP. It all starts in the womb; as soon as you know you’re pregnant, it’s time for both Mom and Dad to start adjusting their lifestyle for the baby. That means implementing a consistent routine and forming better habits. If you know you eat poorly, or if you smoke, change those bad habits. They can not only hurt the child while it’s in the womb, he or she will grow up modeling them. • Create a healthy routine for your child. Children crave structure and therefore, routine. A consistent routine also takes the guesswork out of parents with busy schedules. This includes bathing, brushing teeth and talking or reading

For many parents, having children is the most significant reckoning in one’s lifetime. The birth of Anthony Sposato’s first child made him realize he had not taken full advantage of the opportunities presented to him in life. He had not been raised with the all of the tools for turning opportunity into success, and he and his wife, Carol, determined to give their children a better chance to succeed. “I have heard it said that how your children turn out is a crapshoot. It’s a sad thing to believe that you have nothing to do with how successful your children will be as adults,” says Sposato, whose three sons are now happy, productive professionals. “Like just about all new parents, we had no formal training on how to raise children when our first was born. As a manager and later owner of my own business, I recognized a tragic lack of work ethic in the 20-somethings I worked with. I put much of the culpability on the parents and I used my management skills to help raise my kids.” Sposato, author of “Successful Parenting,” (http://

[ overdose from page 1] documents, it is unknown at this time if the 4-year-old will have longterm effects or damage from the drugs. A few hours after Lehtinen and his son were found, a search warrant was served on the residence. According to court documents, seven syringes containing a liquid believed to be illegal drugs were found in the room where Lehtinen and his son were discovered. Three used syringes were also located in the bedroom. Other drug-related evidence found included a burnt spoon with residue, multiple scales, package equipment and alcohol pads. Police also found $12,620 in cash inside the home, according to documents. Lehtinen has a history of drug use and overdose occurrences. Court documents state that in July of this year, he was transported to the hospital by medics for an overdose and later that month, a concerned party had reported to police that he had been dealing drugs from his house. In February 2005, police involuntarily committed Lehtinen to a local hospital after he cut himself with scissors and threatened suicide while he was in withdrawal from heroin. In addition, police were

called to the Redmond residence in December 2012 for a domestic argument between Lehtinen and his wife. Joel Vangel, who has lived in the house next door to Lehtinen’s residence since the 1980s, said Lehtinen mostly kept to himself but he did have a lot of visitors. “He had a lot of people coming and going over the years,” Vangel said. A few years ago, he said, the drug-enforcement unit from the Bellevue Police Department came by Lehtinen’s house because they were suspicious of drug activity and wanted to learn the layout of the house in case they needed to raid it. Vangel, who is retired but still works part time at EvergreenHealth, said he knew Lehtinen had issues, but not the extent and didn’t see any reason to call the police. “They weren’t bothering me,” he said, adding that Lehtinen’s son used to play with other children in the neighborhood, as well. Lehtinen and his wife had been married for nearly six years and were in the process of getting a divorce — which documents state was finalized the day Lehtinen and his son were found unconscious in his home. According to documents, Lehtinen had recently requested his wife delay the finalization of their

divorce. His wife said Lehtinen had been a heroin and ketamine user in the past but had told her he had stopped. Due to his past, Lehtinen’s wife insisted that part of the divorce and child custody visitation agreement was that he submit to drug testing to ensure their son’s safety, documents state. Until Sept. 15, Lehtinen’s wife and son were living in San Francisco. She returned to Washington with the boy for a job interview and allowed their son to stay with Lehtinen on the evening of Sept. 23. At that time, documents state that Lehtinen’s wife thought he was depressed “but she did not see any reason to remove (their son) from (Lehtinen’s) care.” Until last week, she did not know her estranged husband had been using drugs again. According to King County court documents, Lehtinen acted with “premeditated intent to cause the death of another person, did attempt to cause the death of (his son)… (and) knew or should have known that the victim…was particularly vulnerable or incapable of resistance.” If convicted, Lehtinen could face at least 15 years in prison. Owls girls volleyballers say they’re focused, determined to qualify for the class 1A state tournament this season ANDY NYSTROM anystrom@redmond-reporter.com

Overlake’s girls volleyballers received the royal treatment following Tuesday’s three-game sweep of visiting Seattle Academy. After the Owls registered the final point and lined up at the net to slap hands with their opponents, Overlake students formed a human tunnel with their hands clasped together so the victors could stroll through it

and celebrate their victory in style. The players seemed a bit shy about partaking in the tunnel walk, but they went for it anyway. On the court, the Owls were anything but reserved in their 25-11, 25-8, 25-13 wins to raise their 1A Emerald City League record to 4-1. Leading the way to victory were Emma Ross Williams with six kills, four digs and five aces, Andreea Gavrilescu with 11 assists, Carly

Silvernale with nine digs and 10 aces and Sara Kern with seven assists. “We’ve shown great improvement and we’ve really gelled together as a team, which has been awesome,” said Gavrilescu, a senior setter. “We have a lot of potential this year and I feel like we’re starting to definitely fulfill that potential, so I’m really excited about this year.” Added Silvernale, a junior libero: “It’s really great playing with people you go to school

with. We’ve really made a great team bond this year, so we’re really close. We’ve had a huge change of mindset this year, which is part of the reason we’ve been so successful — everybody’s focused, everybody’s determined, so it’s really fun to play.” One of Overlake’s goals this season is to qualify for the state tournament. Last year, the Owls lost a close match in the opening round of tri-districts. It was a hard loss, and Gavrilescu,

Silvernale and Ross Williams say that defeat is a huge motivator for them to make it to state. “We’re coming back with a vengeance,” said a smiling Silvernale, who is the Owls’ all-time ace record holder with 171 and all-time dig record holder with 582. As a libero, Silvernale’s personal goal is to feed the ball to her teammates and get the offense rolling — much like what occurred on Tuesday night. Ross Williams, a sophomore outside hitter, said the Owls started out slow, but by they were firing on all cylinders before the match was over. Overlake dispatched of Seattle Academy in under an hour. “It’s crazy, because sometimes at the beginning we’re still getting into it, but once we get the bench cheering and everything, we get into a mode where we just keep going — we’re ‘all in’ at the same time and it’s great,” she said. Everybody’s not only trying to make an impact on the scoreboard, but they’re helping each other before and after plays, as well, Ross Williams said. Players need to be there for one another and supply encouragement to get over mistakes quickly, she added, and then everyone can move on to the next serve with a fresh mindset. The lessons learned on the volleyball court also spill over into the players’ personal lives. Gavrilescu, a four-year varsity player, said Owl volleyball has been a crucial part of her life and she appreciates every aspect of the game. “It’s an awesome experience to get to know a lot of girls outside of my grade, and it’s a place to really make connections and just learn how to be a team member,” she said. “Being humble in victory is definitely a big one I’ve learned and know how to motivate others.” Overlake will next take the court at 5 p.m. tonight at Northwest School.
