to dump the city’s business and occupation (B&O) tax while opponent Wade Schwartz supports the tax adopted last year by the council. “We need to get people excited about doing business in Kent,” said Berrios, owner of the Golden Steer Steak ‘n Rib House on the East Hill and

president of the Kent Chamber of Commerce. “And eventually we have got to get rid of that ugly B&O tax.” Schwartz, who owns Blancn-Schwartz Salon in downtown Kent, favors the B&O tax that helps pay for street repairs [ more DEBATE page 9 ]

Kent hot spot for Tesla electric car fire BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com

The city of Kent became the hot spot for national news last week because of the first Tesla electric car fire. When firefighters from the Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority first arrived at the car fire at about 8:21 a.m. Oct. 1 on the Willis Street off-ramp from southbound Highway 167, they focused on making sure no one was in the car and on putting out the fire. They didn’t realize initially the car was a Tesla Model S, the fully electric luxury sedan that sells for more than $70,000. But when a passerby posted a video of the Tesla fire on YouTube - well - news spread like wildfire. The

fire also caused a decline in the California-based Tesla’s market value. The phone rang like crazy all week for Kyle Ohashi, spokesman for the Kent Fire Department. He received calls from the New York Times and many, many others with inquiring minds. “We’ve had inquiries from every national news organization, car magazine and research group - everyone but Tesla themselves,” Ohashi said during a phone interview. “There’s a lot of interest because this is a first-time thing. I don’t know if Tesla expected it to happen.” Rob Carlson, of Bellevue, the driver of Tesla, was alone in the car and escaped injury. Tesla posted Carlson’s email [ more TESLA page 5 ]

Vengadasalam, Elliott square off for school board seat BY ROSS COYLE rcoyle@kentreporter.com

Outside of their mutual interest in the importance of English proficiency for students, Maya Vengadasalam and Bruce Elliott – candidates for Kent School District School Board seat No. 5 – have very

different views on where the district needs to go in the future. While Vengadasalam comes from more than a decade of experience within the school system, Elliott grew up in the valley, attended Renton schools and has lived here ever since as a farmer. A Washington State University

graduate with a degree in animal science, Elliott said he can provide the board with a more experienced perspective as a longtime resident. Vengadasalam comes from an accounting background with a degree in accounting from Florida Atlantic University and has been

active in the district, serving on various boards and committees. She raised her son through Kent schools. The candidates also have different priorities for their first year in office, with Vengadasalam focused on speaking with school staff and students to better understand

The Kent City Council leans toward spending business and occupation (B&O) tax revenue in 2014 to fix up a bunch of street repairs rather than one large, expensive street project. King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg said last Friday on the sunny steps of Kent’s Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center that every year, 11,000 victims of domestic violence in the county turn to the legal system for help. But he added he can only wonder how many more people are too afraid to call or come forward. Especially given that one of every three murders committed in King County every year is a domestic violence crime. “We know that domestic violence is a vastly underreported crime,” Satterberg said. “The reality is that many, many more people live every day under the threat of harm, and under the threat of death.” ROBERT WHALE, Reporter

Kentridge teacher pleads not guilty to sex crime

POLICE OFFICER FIRES SHOTS AT VEHICLE A Kent Police officer fired shots at the driver of a stolen vehicle that reportedly tried to run him over at about 11:52 p.m. Oct. 3 in the 19400 block of the East Valley Highway, also known as 84th Avenue South. The vehicle hit the officer, who suffered minor injuries, according to a Kent Police media release. The driver and two passengers in the vehicle were taken into custody and transported to the city jail. They were treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries suffered when the driver crashed the vehicle into some trees.

Elizabeth Albertson had excused absences. The more expensive projects not recommended by staff for repair at this time include asphalt overlays along South Central Avenue from the Green River to Willis Street ($4 million); East Valley Highway from S. 212th to 196th ($4 million); East Valley Highway from S. 196th to 188th ($4 million); 80th Avenue South from 196th to 188th ($1.5 million); and South 196th Street

A Kentridge High School teacher pleaded not guilty in King County Superior Court in Seattle to a charge of attempted commercial sexual abuse of a minor. Brent Patrick Conley, 27, of Seattle, entered the plea on Oct. 3 and is scheduled to return to court Oct. 15, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. A trial date could be set at the court hearing or attorneys could ask for more time to prepare the case. He is out on bail. Seattle Police arrested Conley on Sept. 18 outside of a Seattle McDonald’s as part of an undercover sting where a detective posed online as a 15-year-old girl seeking sex with older men

in exchange for money. The Kent School District has placed Conley, a firstyear English and social studies teacher, on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation. Senior Deputy Prosecutor Carol Spoor wrote in the charging papers that Conley did solicit, offer or request to engage in sexual conduct with a minor in return for a fee. After officers took Conley into custody, he admitted to detectives that he went to the location to meet a 15-year-old girl for sex. According to emails obtained by police, Conley planned to take the girl to his Seattle home for sex. Conley has no prior criminal history, according to the charging papers.

Antoinette Maurer

Antoinette Lavonne (Toni) Maurer passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in her sleep on September 24, 2013. Those who knew her would say that her heart gave out prematurely due to the enormous amount of love and kindness she gave to others. Toni was born to Patricia and Stan Kink in Bellingham,Washington on February 6, 1957. She was a 1975 graduate of Mount Vernon High School. Following high school she received her Medical Assistant Certificate and worked in that field. In 1982 she married Steven Maurer and was blessed with two daughters. After realizing her love for children she quickly became involved in Early Childhood Education, where she spent the next 20 years teaching in the Kent and Seattle schools. Toni was a devoted mother, trusted friend, patient mentor, and beloved teacher. She found her passion and dedicated her life to teaching children. Her nurturing personality, quick wit and compassion were the gifts she brought to the many lives she touched as Teacher Toni. She will be remembered for her kind heart, keen sense of humor, willingness to help others in need, and her uncanny ability to make people feel special and cared for. Her giving, gentle soul will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Toni was preceded in death by her mother and father, Pat and Stan Kink, and her sister Jackie. She is survived by her daughters Stephanie Barnhill (Chris), Jenny Maurer, her loving sister Szerena Clarke, niece Ciara, nephew Michael, and numerous loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday October 19 at 1-3 pm at the Eagles Club in Renton, WA.

Meanwhile, Elliott believes school needs to reinforce teaching the fundamentals of reading, history, math, economics and civics to prepare students for the future. “We hear anecdotally about students going to community college and having to take remedial classes in reading. We can probably lessen these cases,” Elliott said. He also thinks that classroom discipline has become more lax since when he was in school, and “perhaps that is something to be addressed.” One of the primary differences between the candidates is their faith in the idea of the recently adopted common core curriculum, standards in English and math proposed by the Department of Education and adopted in

must be strengthened, but their suggested methods of doing so differed. Elliott believes students will quickly pick up English if they are immersed in it, while Vengadasalam is a proponent of using the Kent community to quickly bring immigrant students and parents up to speed in English skills. Elliott said he thinks it’s important to provide extra instruction. “You’d have to evaluate it on a case-by-case basis, then provide direct instruction,” he said. “People have to be evaluated. You can’t say you’re going to do this because you don’t know English.” Elliott took the majority vote during the Aug. 6 general elections with just under a 2,000-vote margin between himself and Vengadasalam, who was endorsed by a wide array of people in Kent. The general election is Nov. 5.

2010 by a majority of the states. The standards are not a mandate, but suggested ideas for how to structure curriculum so that all students at public schools are learning the same general fundamentals. Vengadasalam said she supports the policy, but Elliott isn’t as fond of it. “It smacks of too much top down and not enough control to me,” Elliott said. “What I’ve read of common core they’re dumbing things down and moving things back.” He said common core has moved algebra from an eighth grade to a ninth grade subject and is skeptical as to how that will bring students up to an international standard. With a school district as diverse as Kent’s, bilingual education is at the forefront of many issues. When asked about multilingual education, Vengadasalam and Elliott agreed that English proficiency is a priority and

Vengadasalam and Elliott believe in the importance of providing students with a strong skill base but they differ slightly in just what those skills are and the best ways of teaching them. Vengadasalam offered an extensive list of projects the district should improve upon, including improved communication between the district and community, as well as raising standards to make education challenging for students and prepare them for adulthood. “The culture of high expectations remains unaddressed,” Vengadasalam said. “There’s no parity, no rigorous, relevant curriculum in schools.” Vengadasalam also wants to get the community more involved in schools. She explained that Kent residents

increase college prep opportunities in the district, ranging from earlier access to International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement classes in middle school to job shadowing and internship opportunities. Her final goal for her first year in the district is to improve the schools social environment to make it safer and more welcoming.

Elliott said that he doesn’t really have five priorities at the moment, but simply wants to spend the first year of his term on the board learning about the ins and outs of the district. He also would work to return classes on agriculture and farming to the school to help students better understand where food comes from. “People need to know

www.kentreporter.com about the incident on its website Oct. 4 in which he agreed with the company’s following assessment of the accident: “All indications are that your Model S drove over a large, oddly shaped metal object which impacted the leading edge of the vehicle’s undercarriage and rotated into the underside of the vehicle (“pole vault” effect),” said Jerome Guillen the vice president of sales and service for Tesla, who reports directly to Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO. “This is a highly uncommon occurrence.” Carlson told firefighters he struck some kind of object on the freeway, according to the Kent Fire Department incident report. He pulled off the freeway because he began to have problems. He safely left the car before it caught on fire near the bottom of the off-ramp. Tesla gave Carlson another Tesla as a loaner car. “I am still a big fan of your car and look forward to getting back into one,” Carlson said. Musk posted a statement on the company’s website about the fire. “A Model S traveling at highway speed struck a large metal object, causing significant damage to the vehicle,” Musk said. “A curved section that fell off a semi-trailer was recovered from the roadway near where the accident occurred and, according to the road crew that was on the scene, appears to be the culprit. “The geometry of the object caused a powerful lever action as it went under the car, punching upward and

cessful.” Ohashi added that the Tesla website has details for firefighters about how to extract someone from the car after a crash. He said the

Only a force of this magnitude would be strong enough to punch a 3-inch diameter hole through the quarter inch armor plate protecting the base of the vehicle.” Musk, who pointed out the fire was contained to the front part of the car, concluded his posting with the following statement: “For consumers concerned about fire risk, there should be absolutely zero doubt that it is safer to power a car with a battery than a large tank of highly flammable liquid,” Musk said. Musk also said that the firefighters were incorrect to puncture the metal firewall in the top of the battery’s protective metal plate. “When the fire department arrived, they observed standard procedure, which was to gain access to the source of the fire by puncturing holes in the top of the battery’s protective metal plate and applying water,” Musk said. “For the Model S lithium-ion battery, it was correct to apply water (vs. dry chemical extinguisher),

but not to puncture the metal firewall, as the newly created holes allowed the flames to then vent upwards into the front trunk section of the Model S. “Nonetheless, a combination of water followed by dry chemical extinguisher quickly brought the fire to an end.” Ohashi said firefighters made the right move to puncture the firewall. “I would agree with him (Musk) if it was early on but the fire was on,” Ohashi said. “When it was burning it was important to get to the battery. It was not a bad thing. It allowed us to put out the fire.” Ohashi said the Tesla fire was believed to be the first electric car fire that Kent had responded to. He said firefighters respond to a lot of gasoline-powered car fires each year. “It’s a common thing,” he said. But the electric car fire reacted differently than others. Firefighters used water and thought they had the fire out when the battery flamed up. They used dry chemical to finally extinguish the fire. “They pulled the (front) pan out for access and

I’m glad that such an efficient mode of transportation is coming back into its own, but there are problems Brunell hasn’t mentioned. These concern fossil fuel (use of which concerned people want to reduce, as eliminating it might never be possible). First off, coal trains will make our already wretched traffic situation even worse, in any town they pass through – and any town that people might drive through to avoid them. If one of those mile-long trains blocks access to much of the Sodo district, for instance, anyone who has a medical emergency there might die. The air will be full of coal dust and so will the rivers and saltwater, because those

MY TURN

Say no to coal trains and terminals in our state It seems every three months or so an article or editorial appears in the Kent Reporter in support of building coal export terminals in Washington and allowing the associated 18 trains a day – each a mile or so long – to pass through our communities. The author tends to be someone

with an impressive sounding business title who is promoting the proposed project as being good for the economy and thereby the public as a whole. They tend to play up the supposed benefits while playing down or saying nothing about the costs. And while they may appear to be random

Question of the week:

Twelve Democratic and Republican state lawmakers will gather Friday morning in Seattle to continue formulating a strategy for convincing The Boeing Co. to assemble the 777X in Washington. This will be their second sit-down in two weeks and will take place behind closed doors in an unannounced location. (I hear if you hang out near the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce building around 9:30 a.m. you might catch sight of them.) And if it’s like the inaugural meeting in Everett last week, materials handed out will be collected before anyone leaves the room. This dozen, along with representatives of the Machinists, aerospace engineers, Washington State Labor Council and Aerospace Futures Alliance, are trying to craft a secret sauce to sway company executives and don’t want its ingredients known prematurely. They are under some pressure. Gov. Jay Inslee, who cooked up the idea of the task force, wants something tangible before the international air show in Dubai begins Nov. 17. That’s when Boeing is expected to formally launch the 777X program and maybe hint where it will build the next generation of its popular jetliner. There’s good precedent for such an exercise. A decade ago, a select group of lawmakers drew up significant changes in Washington laws on such things as taxes, workers compensation and unemployment then got them approved by their colleagues. The result: Boeing chose Everett for its 7E7 – now 787 – program. This time around is different in two major respects. Then, The Boeing Co. laid out pretty clearly what it wanted and conducted a formal process to solicit proposals from communities and states. This time around, the

stand-alone articles, they’re more likely a planned component of big coal and other business interests’ overall strategy to ram this thing through by making it sound reasonable or at least acceptable. I think the public knows otherwise. These pro-coal articles are designed to slowly wear away at peoples’ gut instincts and thereby grow support for, or at least reduce

Any jobs this project would bring are likely to be short-lived and the permanent ones only available to a few. If terminals aren’t built here, the trains won’t necessarily go to Canada – I gather the rail system is overloaded up there, too, and you might ask Portland or Los Angeles how their terminals have worked out for them. There was an article a while back in the Seattle Weekly about this mess and it mentioned studies that gave contradictory results in the matter of health risks – but the sources were not cited. I’ll cite mine: powerpastcoal.org. In the case of an uncertainty like this, I would choose the conservative option, the one with less risk. There’s too much at stake. China can’t pay us enough to replace our lives. I’m not jazzing you when I say this: Coltrane yes, coal trains no. – Kerrick Mainrender [ more LETTERS page 7 ]

opposition to, the project. It’s important that we not allow ourselves to be fooled here. This is all about a minority (big business and big money) seeking great financial benefits while passing the costs off on the majority. In a nutshell, the project’s proponents are asking us to support or allow massive amounts of Montana and Wyoming coal to be dug up and transported through our state to Asia, where it would be burned and contribute to climate change, [ more MY TURN page 7 ]

[ MY TURN from page 6 ] which affects us all. And though this is an energy proposal, it’s even questionable how much energy sense it even makes. Consider, for example, the energy consumed in mining, loading and transporting the coal. And regarding the trains, we are all expected to bear the daily costs of the gas and time we burn while waiting for them to pass. When these en-

ergy costs are factored in, it’s unclear how much net energy the proposal would even produce. As a teaser, proponents point to the jobs the project would produce. However, relatively few would be permanent, they won’t be in South King County, and on the whole would amount to a mere drop in the bucket regionally. And the upshot – the project would make it harder for those who already have jobs to get to them

I’m convinced Tim will bring responsible leadership to City Hall by working collaboratively with the City Council, city leaders and all of us as we face big issues confronting us. For example, as a City Councilmember, he was the deciding vote in allowing Kent Station to proceed.

[ LETTERS from page 6 ]

Support Clark for Kent mayor I’m endorsing Tim Clark for our next mayor of Kent because of the depth of experience he brings to the well-being of Kent and our fellow citizens.

Morris, reciting the achievements of 2003, said it’s too soon to pillory the latest effort. They’re just starting out and on Friday members will get a chance to put ideas from their caucuses on the table. “This is not a place to come and play politics, he said of the group. “It is a place to come and find solutions. Political reporter Jerry Cornfield’s blog, The Petri Dish, is at www.heraldnet.com. on time. While a few would benefit from the jobs produced, we are all being asked to foot a huge bill for them. This is not the kind of economic activity we should be creating. We could, for example, mine the Washington Monument or State Capitol for marble. This would create jobs, but not ones that make us better off. Let’s reject this proposal as the opportunistic, selfish money grab it is. Mark R. Johnston is a Kent resident and contributor to the Kent Reporter.

His proven integrity has a bearing on the substantive stands he’s willing to take on issues. Tim characteristically listens to the advice of trusted people and works productively with others in implementing solutions. As a former educator and Kent City Councilmember

and current Kent School District director, Tim never showboats enthusiasm but faithfully shares his lifelong commitment, experience and the gifts of his wonderful intellect. Please join me in voting for Tim Clark for our next mayor. – Anne Timlick

Republican-prisoners attitude in his dealings with the Legislature in his first year. For some task force members, it’s tempered their optimism on what will be accomplished in the next few weeks. For example, Inslee will likely need to press Republicans into endorsing a multi-billion transportation dollar package that Senate GOP leaders have rejected for months. And on workers compensation, he will likely need to soften his stance and push House Democrats who blocked reforms of the program earlier this year.

Fall is for planting but also for autumn decorating. If all you have for an outdoor space is a doorway you can still celebrate the change of seasons. Even city dwellers can take a walk in a park and collect a few fallen leaves for an indoor display and reminder of this glorious season. Here’s some simple ideas for fall decorating: • Arrange a few pinecones, fallen leaves and beautiful stones in a bowl or display on a mantel. Let this be a reminder to enjoy the colors, scents and other changes of the season when you next step outside the door. your leaves now, stuff them into large plastic garbage bags and remember to do these three things: Add a shovel full of soil to the bag to inoculate the leaves with leaf-chomping soil critters, poke holes into the plastic bag so the decaying leaves can get air and finally, store the bags out of site under a shrub, outdoor table or inside a garage or shed for the winter. Come spring you’ll have a leafy, moist mulch to spread around trees and shrubs that will smother the spring weeds and seal in moisture for the summer. Large leaves that fall onto the lawn can be mowed into smaller chunks before bagging. Chopping up the leaves always helps them to decompose faster.

Q. My neighbor sprayed RoundUp on her shrub beds to kill the weeds in the spring. Then this fall she collected the fallen leaves from her maple trees and gave them to me for my compost pile. My question is are these leaves safe to put into my compost? They were resting on the same soil where she sprayed the Roundup. O.G., Olympia A. No worries, and congrats for branching out and collecting organic matter from the neighbors. The autumn foliage that falls from trees will not absorb herbicides from the soil – especially if the soil was treated months ago. RoundUp is a glysophate soap that breaks down quickly. In the spring you might even want to share some of your composted leaves so your neighbor can spread a layer over her spring weeds and smother them. A blanket

www.kentreporter.com [ DEBATE from page 1 ] by bringing in about $5 million per year. “We need to make sure we’re paying for what we are using and if we don’t replace what we are using we are going to end up with nothing,” Schwartz said. “I support the B&O. I think we need to make sure that we are watching it like clock watchers and are using it wisely.” The winner between Berrios and Schwartz replaces Jamie Perry, who decided not to run for reelection. Council members are paid $13,752 per year for their part-time positions. King County Elections will mail ballots Oct. 16. Ballots are due back postmarked by election day Nov. 5. The other race features Bailey Stober and Ken Sharp. The winner will replace Elizabeth Albertson, who decided not to seek reelection. Stober let it be known that he thinks the city needs to show stronger support for businesses with fewer taxes.

“I’ve heard around town that businesses don’t pay their fair share (of taxes),” said Stober, who wants to evaluate the city’s tax structure compared to neighboring cities. “I met a lady not too long ago who owns a small business across from Kent-Meridian High School and she talked about the tax increases. “The City Council last year passed five tax increases including the B&O. In her case, not only does she own a business she lives in Kent so she’s paying nine tax increases in one year, four residential and five business taxes. So to say the city of Kent is being fair to business owners, I don’t necessarily agree with that statement.” Sharp, although he opposes the B&O tax, thinks the city pays attention to the needs of businesses but could do an even better job. “I don’t think the city is purposely ignoring the businesses or there is a lack of understanding,” said Sharp, who owns Minuteman Press in Kent and served as the Cham-

ber president last year. “I think part of the problem is how the city operates. They have a lot of things to do and sometimes their focus is diverted away from bringing in businesses. The council is to provide focus for the city, and as a council member, I will help bring that focus to them to bring more attention to the businesses.” Sharp remains in the race despite first-degree theft charges filed by King County prosecutors against him for allegedly stealing money from his 93-year-old mother’s bank account. Sharp pleaded not guilty to the charges on Aug. 29 in King County Superior Court. He is scheduled to return to court Nov. 20. Stober announced at the debate that he resigned Monday as executive assistant to the Washington State Commission on African American Affairs to take a job as a project analyst with the Washington State Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises.

Regional Animal Services opens doors and hearts for adoptable pets More than a dozen pets found new homes during last weekend’s open house at the King County Pet Adoption Center in Kent. The second annual event, which was part of a statewide celebration organized by Pawsitive Alliance, highlighted the good work that animal shelters all over Washington are doing to get pets adopted into loving homes. “The open house was a chance for people to go ‘behind the scenes’ a little bit and see how Regional Animal Services

works every day to help animals and people,” said Dr. Gene Mueller, manager of Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC). “We’d like to thank Pawsitive Alliance for organizing this statewide celebration and raising awareness for pets in need.” A key part of the King County celebration involved members of Girl Scout Troop 44180 from Kent. For their Silver Project, six girls in the troop organized a community event in September called “Wiggles, Wags, ‘n Whiskers.” The event was designed to raise awareness of responsible pet ownership and animal resources available in the community.

DRIVEN TO RUN, EXCEL AT K-M

PACIFIC’S ARETA EARNS NORTHWEST CONFERENCE HONORS Pacific University outside hitter Una Areta, a Kent-Meridian alumnus, has earned the freshman selection as the Northwest Conference’s Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week. The award, selected by the conference’s sports information directors, was announced on Monday night. Areta paced Pacific to two wins last weekend, allowing the Boxers to improve to 4-9 overall and 3-3 in the conference. She finished the weekend with 37 kills, 27 digs, four blocks and three assists in the two matches.

Competition literally runs in Olivia Baerny’s blood. Kent-Meridian’s freshman varsity cross country runner has taken a first-place finish and two second-place finishes in her first five races with the Royals, With a mother who was a two-time All-American collegiate high jumper and a father who set distance-running records at K-M, it’s easy to see where she gets her competitive streak. Todd Baerny’s cross country school record in 1987 lasted 11 years, with additional records in the mile, two mile and 800-meter races. His daughter looks to follow in his footsteps. “It’s pretty darn cool,” said Todd, referring to her progress. “She’s picked it up and she enjoys it, and she likes the competition as much as I like to compete.” While he competed in track and field and cross country at Western Washington University, Todd hasn’t returned to the competitive scene and is proud of his daughter for following him. “It’s exciting being her dad, watching her race,” he said. “She stays right in there, and where a lot of other kids get tired she seems to step it up.” She’s already taken down several personal records and dogged Mount Rainier senior Jordan

Kent-Meridian freshman sensation Olivia Baerny, wearing her father’s letterman jacket, has flourished on the cross country trail this season behind the support of her coaches, family and teammates. ROSS COYLE, Kent Reporter McPhee by five seconds at the Curtis Invitational on Oct. 5. Baerny said she never figured she had running talent until she ran in the second grade, and hasn’t stopped running since. As she moved through later grades, her father would take her out running with him, offering advice. As she competed in athletic events, like the Junior Olympics, she realized her gift and ran track in middle school. Despite a divorce, her mother, Lisa Kaye, and father come together to help her progress in running. Todd helps her with training and tips, while Lisa goes online to find competition and points out

which runners she should try to pace each race. Baerny didn’t always have her eyes set on cross country until a teammate recommended it during a swim meet, but she was hooked after her first few practices. Beyond the feelings of success and achievement, Baerny simply likes the attitude of the people on the team. “Even if I wasn’t a very good runner, I probably would still do cross country if I was introduced to it,” she said. “I’ve done track and gymnastics and there were cool people on the team, but nothing in comparison to cross country.”

She describes the team as “a big family.” Their friendly, welcoming nature and good attitude kept Baerny coming back. But Baerny doesn’t let the sport dominate her life. She has found interests in other activities such as photography and hiking, or just relaxing and watching the crime drama, “Bones”. For inspiration, she looks to legendary Steve Prefontaine, the University of Oregon runner and 1972 Olympian who, before his life was tragically cut short, held every distance record between 2,000 and 10,000 meters. “As soon as I found out who he was – my dad told me about him – he’s been, like, my hero,” she said. “He ran really hard, as fast as he could every race, and gave all he could, and that’s inspiring.” Keeping this in mind, Baerny has already made Oregon her first school choice for its track program, and hopes to continue running professionally. “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift,” Prefontaine once said. True to his words, Baerny finds motivation to try harder through her success. “I’m good at it, and I was so good at it that I guess there’s pressure to stay in it ’cause, like, people will be disappointed if you drop out of it,” she said. “And also I’m good at it, and I like winning, it’s really fun. And so things that I’m good at, I usually like.”
