Happy Holidays from North Kitsap

Take a horse-drawn carriage ride in downtown Poulsbo. The decorated storefronts add to the Scandinavian flavor of downtown. You’ll find unique gifts of locally made items — art, books, foods — many with a Scandinavian flair. Enjoy a Scandinavian Christmas at Jule Fest, featuring a Christmas tree lighting, music, a bonfire, and the arrival of the Lucia bride by her Viking escorts.
The joys of the holiday season are plentiful — from the tradition of picking up a wreath from the Bainbridge Kiwanis, celebrating the holiday spirit at the Tingstad and Rumbel concert at Island Center Hall, letting the kids take a plunge at the holiday carnival at the pool, watching the Christmas boat parade, and finding that unique gift for a loved one in our downtown Winslow wonderland.
Let your imagination take flight at the holiday lighting at Kingston’s Mike Wallace Park. Enjoy a Victorian Christmas in Port Gamble. Tour elaborately decorately homes in Hansville. Watch a holiday stage production in Poulsbo’s intimate Jewel Box Theatre or Port Gamble’s historic 19th century theater.
Winter passes in a whirlwind of events and holiday fun on Bainbridge: The Bainbridge Island Fire Department’s holiday music truck making the rounds; seeing the latest, amazing offering from island artists at the Winter Studio Tour; adding something to the Giving Trees downtown and stopping off at Helpline House with a donation.
Holiday concerts, bazaars and fairs in Hansville, Indianola, Kingston, Poulsbo and Suquamish round out the fun. Bazaars and fairs are also great places to find unique gifts. Check our holiday calendars on page 17, 31 and 35. If you’re looking for some new holiday memories, they’re waiting to be discovered in your backyard.
This year, join your fellow islanders in kicking off the holiday season at the Community Tree Lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 on Madrone Lane. The talented singers from Ovation! will be joined by the Figgy Pudding Peddlers and the Bainbridge High Band. Santa will stop by at 6 p.m. to help light the tree.

Take the holiday spirit year-round with
12 Days
of Experiences
BY CECILIA GARZA Bainbridge Island Review
I
t’s often said that Bainbridge Island is a tourism destination for the daytripping Seattleite. But that doesn’t mean that as residents, we can’t also enjoy some of the things that make Bainbridge a good place to be. This winter, when brainstorming gift ideas, consider giving the gift of Bainbridge Island experiences rather than stuff to put under the tree. There’s plenty to do here, and plenty to share with loved ones and family. Give the gift of an island experience for a year-long holiday spirit. The following are “12 Days of Experiences,” so to speak.
1. Tickets to a local performance
Bainbridge Island is home to several performing arts groups. They attract talent of all ages from around the island and offer an intimate setting for theatre, dance and music. The Bainbridge Performing Arts, Ovation!, Bainbridge Dance Center and Island Music Guild hold regular performances, shows and concerts year-around. They also offer classes in a multitude of performing arts that could be an extra special gift for your loved one.
2. Water sports, classes and tours
Back of Beyond Outfitters, located in downtown Winslow, offer all of the above. They offer full-moon canoe tours once a month, Eagle Harbor tours, destination tours that range from Hood Canal to Blake Island and even a Mother’s Day paddle. The business also offers kayak, canoe and paddle board rentals. This is a gift to look forward to all the way into next spring. Nearby is also Exotic Aquatics Scuba & Kayaking. The Madison Avenue business offers classes in scuba diving, rescue diving, emergency first response and snorkeling. They also offer kayaking tours and youth paddling adventures.
3. Kids Discovery Museum membership
Looking for a night off from the kids while simultaneously giving your kids a night of fun and exploration? Maybe you’re just looking for something new to engage your child in a constructive way. With membership, Kids Discovery Museum offers evening and daytime events ranging from Sensory Sunday, which focuses on children affected by autism, to Math Wednesday, which invites young explorers in math-themed experiments and activities, and building gingerbread houses for the holiday season. The museum holds events daily and is also available for scheduling birthday parties.
4. Admission to Bloedel Reserve
One way to bask in the island’s seasonal changes is a walk through The Bloedel Reserve. The reserve is open year-round and, no matter the season, showcases the best of the Northwest in natural beauty. Among much more, the trails take visitors on a walk through a high grass meadow to glassy ponds and a magical moss garden. Admission discounts are available for children, seniors and military.
5. An afternoon or evening of good food
Give your loved one a gift certificate to some of Bainbridge’s most notable eateries. Whether you’re looking for fine dining at The Four Swallows, a dessert treat at Mora Iced Creamery or some tender Nigiri at SuBi Japanese restaurant, you’ll find food to remember.
6. Weekend vacation at home
During the summer season, it’s hard to come by a vacancy at one of the few lodging venues on the island. But lodging in the fall and winter seasons offer a variety of special retreats from the daily chaos of life at home. Visit the Bainbridge Island Lodging Association website, bainbridgelodging.com, to see what is available for your family, friends or significant other.
7. Yoga, massage, facials and health
There are several places to get some well-deserved TLC. Doing it for yourself is sometimes hard to justify, but passing it on for someone else to enjoy — or to enjoy with — has never failed. Bainbridge is home to the Island Yoga Space and Bainbridge Yoga House. Both offer classes at drop-in rates and on class cards that come in 10-, 20- and 30-class packages. The island also has an extensive directory of spas from The Flowering Life to Cherry Blossom Day Spa that specialize in massage and skin care.
8. Bainbridge Island Museum of Art
It’s free and gives insight to Bainbridge Island’s creative talent. Peruse the paintings, sculptures and altogether magical art created by Bainbridge Island artists. The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art relies on memberships from community members as part of its ongoing financial support, so give the gift of a BIMA membership this holiday season. Membership benefits include discounts in the bistro and museum stores, as well as members-only preview receptions and other goodies. Memberships range from $30 to $150. 12 tis the season 2013
9. Beer enthusiasts
Bainbridge Island Brewing is good for all your over-21 friends and family members. The brewery has a flagship line and shelf of seasonals that will make your mouth water. It is also the host to weekly trivia nights and open-jam band sessions.
10. Not a beer enthusiast, but like a rich glass of wine?
Wine tasting is another favorite to share with friends and family. Bainbridge is home to seven wineries: Amelia Wynn Winery, Eagle Harbor Winery, Eleven Winery, Fletcher Bay Winery, Island Vinters Tasting Room, Perennial Vinters and Rolling Bay Winery. Visit the Winslow Way tasting rooms for Eleven Winery or Island Vinters for an evening of wine tasting. There are also wine tour weekends throughout the year that feature some of the season’s best from the wineries.
11. Art parties
If there is one thing Bainbridge Island resonates with is its love for the arts. Kids, families, friends and couples have an array of art studio opportunities. HeArt & Soul is open six days a week and offers ceramics painting for groups events, birthday parties, team building and more. With reservations, they also offer kids’ nights out. Other places that offer art classes and studio parties include the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District and Bainbridge Arts & Crafts.
12. Island Rock Gym
It’s relatively new, but the Island Rock Gym has been a hit since its grand opening this summer. With a monthly membership, climbers can enjoy unlimited climbing and bouldering. If a monthly membership is too much to commit for a gift, consider a day pass or 10 visit punch card for two. Families of two can also buy membership at a reduced rate, and kids younger than 5 get in free with a paying member.

Give a good friend
a good read
One local bookstore helps you find the perfect literary gift this season
BY LUCIANO MARANO Bainbridge Island Review
W
hen I was growing up, my little brother and I had our own special holiday tradition. Every year I would get him a book for Christmas, and he would not read it. Year after year, without fail, I would go out and buy him a book and he would place it on the shelf unread as if the whole affair were some kind of seasonal ceremony. My brother was an outdoorsy man-of-action. He loved fast bikes, guns, sports and he was completely mystified by my love of reading. I was likewise confused by his lack of interest in any one of the many books I had picked out for him. I was determined to save the heathen with the power of knowledge, but he was resistant. Our holiday tradition seemed destined to continue indefinitely.
Then I got him a biography of Eminem, his absolute favorite musician at the time.
He read it.
I know he did, because I saw him reading it. Had cell phones been nearly as prevalent then, I would undoubtedly have taken a photo of this historic event and obnoxiously posted it to all sorts of social media sites. I always give books as gifts. I enjoy finding my friends and family what might very well be their new favorite book. If you’re finding yourself with a serious lack of gift inspiration this year I highly recommend you make a quick stop down at your local bookstore, and just in case you don’t have the time to dedicate to trial-and-error like I did with my brother, I’ve asked the staff of Eagle Harbor Book Company in downtown Winslow to make a few suggestions. Below you’ll find their picks for best book-related gifts this year, as well my own, and remember: Everybody has a favorite book, even if they haven’t read it yet.
The staff of Eagle Harbor Books recommends: “Songs of Willow Frost” by Jamie Ford ($26) This New York Times bestseller is the sequel to Ford’s popular “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.” Set in Depression-era Seattle, it is the story of two lost souls - a boy with dreams of his future and a woman escaping her past - both of them seeking love and hope. Special deal: Get a free copy of “Hotel” when you purchase ‘Songs of Willow Frost” at Eagle Harbor Book Co. while supplies last.
“A Child’s Christmas in Wales” by Dylan Thomas ($9.95) Start a family tradition with this lovely booklet featuring beautiful woodcut illustrations to accompany the timeless prose poem first published fifty years ago.
“Blue Moon Soup: A Family Cookbook” by Gary Goss ($16.95) Share a book and then a meal by exploring the recipes in this collection, each of them perfect for young aspiring chefs.
Some other gift ideas available from Eagle Harbor Books Scrabble mugs ($12.95) Personalize a stocking stuffer or small gift with somebody’s initials or favorite scrabble words.
Fun and funky socks ($10.95) There is nothing like curling up with a good book on a cold Northwest night, especially when you’re keeping your feet warm with some fun socks.
My picks: “I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling with Villains (Real and Imagined)” by Chuck Klosterman ($17.97) The latest collection of hilarious essays from renowned pop-culture analyst Klosterman deals with the subject of villainy, what it really means to be evil and why

it sometimes feels so good to cheer for the bad guy. Subjects of focus range from O.J. Simpson and Bill Clinton to Machiavelli and Bernhard Goetz.
“NOS4A2” by Joe Hill ($11.89) Sound the title out. Think vampire. You’ll get it. The latest novel by Hill is just as terrifying as his previous efforts and definitely cements his reputation as one of the greatest horror writers working today.
“Jim Henson: The Biography” by Brian Jay Jones ($24.57)

The Spirit of
Giving
BY RICHARD WALKER North Kitsap Herald
T
he 9-year-old girl was in a coffee house with her mom and saw a flier for North Kitsap Fishline’s Food for Thought program, which ensures students have food for the weekend.
“She told her mom, ‘This is so cool. I want to do this for my birthday,’” Fishline executive director Mary Nader recalled. “So for her birthday, instead of presents, her mom bought her the things that go into the Food for Thought packs, and her friends came over and they packed 100 packs. It totally blew us away.” With the holidays upon us, the girl’s story is a timely example of how you can make a difference in someone else’s life, and get the reward of knowing the world is a better place because of you. Consider the gift of charitable giving. When someone asks you what you want for a gift, consider asking for a donation for a favorite cause. Some families choose a cause to give to in lieu of a gift for themselves. Giving, by the way, doesn’t have to be monetary. Consider a gift of your time. “There is some inexplicable reward that comes when you step out of your own needs and take care of others,” Nader said. “Something happens — we all know it, that sense of peace, the feeling that you’re doing something about the problem. When you can take an action locally and you’ve done what you can, you feel better, knowing that you’ve impacted a life.” Several organizations provide an opportunity to make a big difference locally. These organizations are part of the local safety net, and chances are good that any gift you give will benefit someone you know.
POULSBO LIONS/RAAB FOUNDATION BELLRINGER FUND Money raised by the Poulsbo Lions/Raab Foundation Bellringer Fund provides local residents with emergency housing, help avoiding eviction, assistance with utility bills and medical co-payments, and vouchers for gas. Grants are administered by North Kitsap Fishline and St. Vincent de Paul. The Poulsbo Lions/Raab Foundation Bellringer Fund is different than the Bellringer Fund administered by the Kitsap Sun; the Poulsbo Lions/Raab Foundation Bellringer Fund serves only North Kitsap. It was founded in the 1940s by Frank and Mabel Raab as a way for neighbors to help each other during emergencies. The fund helps at least 300 families a year. In addition, the fund supplies Christmas food baskets to 100 local families. TO GIVE: P.O. Box 1244, Poulsbo, WA 98370. Donations are accepted year-round for the fund, and are tax-deductible.
SHARENET NEIGHBOR AID ShareNet, a non-profit, operates a food bank, a clothing bank, and a program that makes nutritious food available for school children on weekends. ShareNet also assists families and individuals facing eviction or needing help keeping their utilities on. ShareNet serves Eglon, Hansville, Indianola, Kingston, Little Boston, Port Gamble, and a portion of Poulsbo and Suquamish. Each donation to ShareNet’s Neighbor Aid campaign supports efforts to fight hunger and need in those communities. The majority of the people who use ShareNet’s services are the working poor — people unemployed or under-employed, ShareNet executive director Mark Ince said. Elderly residents living on a fixed income also visit ShareNet, as well as people with disabilities or living with illnesses. “We distributed over 35,000 more pounds of food this year than last,” Ince said. “We had almost 800 more individual instances of service in 2012. More service means more work — volunteers served over 1,000 more hours than in 2011.” ShareNet’s annual budget is about $150,000, so Neighbor Aid makes a difference. “Neighbor Aid 2012 enjoyed the support of hundreds of local individuals, businesses, service clubs and schools, all coming together through ShareNet to help hungry people in our community,” Ince said. “Your support, whether time, money or service, ensures ShareNet can continue to operate. If you met our clients directly, they would tell you themselves how grateful they are. We extend that gratitude toward you.” tis the season 2013 23

Fishline Annual Appeal North Kitsap Fishline is part of the area’s safety net, providing a variety of services to make sure people have what they need to improve their circumstances. The organization’s annual appeal is going on now, and Fishline hopes to raise enough money to expand its services. Fishline operates a food bank on 3rd Avenue in Poulsbo and the Second Season Thrift Store on Anderson Parkway. Fishline provides emergency food boxes, grocery delivery service for homebound clients, and a weekend food-backpack program for children who may not otherwise receive enough food when not in school. Fishline provides on-site registration for SNAP Food Benefits, referrals for free financial and employment counseling, and bus tokens for people needing to get to and from jobs, interviews and medical appointments. Fishline has several programs to help fend off homelessness. Fishline can help eligible clients who have difficulty paying all of the up-front fees when renting a new place to live, and has a rent assistance program to help people who have been served with an eviction notice. Fishline provides one-time rental and mortgage assistance for those experiencing financial crisis. Its home-share program pairs home owners at risk of foreclosure with people looking for a room to rent; the program gets the homeowner some help making the house payment, and the renter a place to live until his or her circumstances improve. Fishline can also help people faced with utility disconnection. Fishline works with local motels and other venues to provide from two to five nights of emergency shelter. Another program provides a safe parking location for single women who are temporarily living in their vehicles. Fishline also connects clients with credit counseling and financial education, free legal assistance, and assistance with medical and dental care.
The need is growing.
According to Nader, Fishline is on track to handle 28,200 visits this year, up from 22,117 in 2009. It will distribute 1.375 million pounds of food, up from 966,100 in 2009.
TO GIVE: North Kitsap Fishline, 18916 3rd Ave NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370. Online: www.nkfishline.org
Kingston Food Bank The Kingston Food Bank serves about 50 families a week, mostly in the downtown area. It’s clients are older, or homeless, and mostly pedestrian. But it’s been located in temporary quarters outside the downtown area since losing its longtime home in December 2012. Besides food, the Food Bank also provides school supplies to local students in September, and has a clothing for people in need. A recent grant from the Seattle Foundation covers the 58-year-old food bank’s rent for at least a year, and the food bank — at this writing — is looking for a new home. Continued gifts to the food bank will help it meet needs and shore up its finances for when the grant expires.
The food bank’s hours are noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. The phone numbers are 360-297-4861 and 360-297-7100.
Food Bank supporters include The Pizza Factory, which donates ice; The Grub Hut, which donates fruits and vegetables; and The Borrowed Kitchen, which donates bread.
TO GIVE: Kingston Food Bank, P.O. Box 323, Kingston, WA 98346.
One Call for All When you give through Bainbridge Island’s One Call For All, you can choose among 86 local non-profit organizations to gift. One hundred percent of your donation goes directly to the non-profit you designate. One Call For All was established in 1960 and over the last 10 years has distributed more than $8.9 million to non-profit organizations. Those organizations serve the community in many ways. Among the Bainbridge and Kitsap causes that benefit from One Call for All:
Arts & Humanities Community Outreach & Enrichment Emergency Services Environment & Recreation Health & Human Services Schools & Early Childhood Education Youth Services & Organizations Off-Island Organizations serving Bainbridge and Kitsap

Stay Healthy and Fit During the Holiday Season The holidays are supposed to be a time for celebration, family, fun and traditions. But, the holidays also bring stress, little sleep and over indulgence on food. Much of our celebrating revolves around food, shopping, parties, being tempted by treats everywhere you turn and not having enough time for exercising or taking care of yourself.

Last Minute
Gift Ideas BY KIPP ROBERTSON North Kitsap Herald
T
here’s nothing like the silent majesty of a cold winter’s eve, sitting by the fireplace sipping a hot beverage while watching the little ones get antsy over which present they will open first. And then it hits you — like a wildly thrown snowball — in the face: you forgot to pick up a present for those extra guests. You know the ones — they didn’t know where they would be for the holidays and at the last minute, decided to grace you with their presence. Oh, you asked them weeks ago if they wanted to join you, but being indecisive is their never-ending gift. Well, warm up the car, crank up Alice Cooper’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and burn some rubber, because you’re doing some last-minute shopping.
Gifts to celebrate Norwegian heritage For the doll collector, pick up a Lidberg troll ornament from the Nordic Maid. Price ranges from about $11-$80. The wee ones in the family will enjoy spilling milk all over a “Uff Da Happens” bib, $7.95. Or, they may enjoy finger puppets shaped like moneys, bears, flying pigs and the magician’s rabbit in the hat, they’ll keep the kids busy creating plays with a cardboard miniature puppet theater, $7.95. The lutefisk lover in the home will enjoy a T-shirt that reads “Lutefisk: It will put the fear of cod in you,” $18.95. And if you’re having difficulty figuring out how to serve lefse this season, pick up “91 Ways to Serve Lefse,” for a few ideas; $6.95. Cookbooks range from $7-$35. If there’s a cook on the wish list with a taste for hot sauce, a great choice is a 5-ounce mini-bottle of Viking Hot Sauce that will “Bleach Your Bones.” An 8-ounce bottle of barbecue sauce will go along with the hot sauce; flavored with green chilis, garlic and hickory, $5.95. Purchasing a gift for someone who loves lefse, but doesn’t have the time or knowhow to make their own? Head over to Marina Market and pick up some Norsland Lefse, $3.99. For the readers in the family, Liberty Bay Books suggests the following titles for gifts. For adults, “Police,” by Jo Nesbo, $25.95; and “Island Summers: Memories of a Norwegian Childhood,” by Tilly Culme-Seymour,$32.00. For the kids, “Children of the Northlights,” by Ingri and Edgar Parin D’Aulaire, $16.95.
Sweets
Along with all the other speciality foods and beverages from the market, Marina Market has a plethora of Norwegian candies. A container of Saetre Ballerina mint-chocolate cookies is sure to please the person in your group looking for a crumbly treat, $3.25; it’s a popular item though, so check availability. The Nidar Laban Seigmenn candies come in five sweet fruit flavors – raspberry, apple, pineapple, lemon, and orange — and will satisfy any sweet tooth, $4.99. If you’re looking to spend a little more on treats for that special someone, why not (Continued on page 38)

DIY Decorating
that lasts all season long
A
s the holidays roll around, it’s natural to want to spread good tidings and cheer with festive decorations like wreaths, candy canes and Santa Claus figurines. But this year, instead of digging out the same old holiday decorations, why not create some new looks that will last the entire winter season, even after you put away the gift wrap and ornaments?
Stimulate the senses Nothing says winter like the fresh smell of pine and the soft, warm glow of candle light. Repurpose simple glass bottles into an outdoorsy candlescape with Krylon Natural Stone Textured Finish spray paint. Available in eight colors, like Olivine, it goes on easy and gives you the natural beauty of stone and an elegant, professional-looking appearance. Once dry, wrap artificial garland with pinecones around the bottle’s neck or let the garland cascade down the bottle. Place pine tree-scented white taper candles in the bottle openings, light and enjoy for a fresh look and smell that will stimulate your senses well into 2014.
Color works wonders Another easy way to excite the senses during a drab, gray winter is with pops of color. For a decorative display that lasts all season, avoid the red and green color combination associated with Christmas and branch out with more contemporary choices like teals, blues, purples and pinks. Metallics like silver and gold are also a great way to glitz up the season without looking like the North Pole in overdrive. Try Krylon’s ColorMaster Metallic in Gold to spice up old ornaments, vases, frames, centerpieces and more in no time at all. Group spray-painted ornaments or pine cones in a hurricane vase or glass bowl and display on the mantel for added ambiance to any living room.
Deck the halls Looking for a way to display the abundance of holiday cards from friends and family? Repurpose an old window shutter to create a unique display. Start by spray painting it with a festive shade, such as green or burgundy, which adds a touch of holiday spirit. Once dry, hang the shutter in the kitchen or entryway and place holiday cards in the slats of the shutter for a creative way to stay organized. Once the holidays have passed, you can still use the shutter to display birthday cards, thank you notes, party invitations and more all year long.
Outdoor decor The inside of the home isn’t the only space you can be creative. Make a lasting statement before houseguests even step inside your home by focusing decorative attention to the outside. Line walkways and driveways with lights or faux miniature pine trees, and place white flameless candlesticks on each windowsill to add a simple touch of holiday spirit without going overboard. Prop a vintage snow sled outside the front door to welcome guests. So, this year instead of the same decorations, consider some fun and easy ways to re-beautify them into pieces that you’ll be proud to display throughout the winter season. Pet companions Let’s not forget about your loveable pets. Even the family’s furry friend should be able to enjoy opening a present or two for the holidays. For the feline in the house, why not pick up some new cat furniture. A scratch-friendly cat bed made out of compressed cardboard perhaps? Superior Pets in Poulsbo Village sells one by Brawny Cat out of Port Townsend, cost is about $50. But there’s cheaper options as well. And, if you’re feeling lucky, the store is raffling off a cat condo, which is worth more than $600. Raffle tickets are $5. The winner will be announced Dec. 24. If the canine has been especially good this year, why not pick up a new fetch toy? Kong dog toys, which hold up well, cost between $10-$50. Or, an edible gift is never a bad option. Superior Pets sells raw, cooked, and smoked bones suitable for most dogs. Depending on the treat, cost ranges from $5 to about $30. You can also find something special at Boomer’s Pet Boutique in downtown Poulsbo. But maybe the family pet is something other than a dog or cat. Hamsters and gerbils, for example, enjoy tearing into things. Try giving them a bit of packaging to enjoy. And for the parakeet requesting your attention, wrap a walnut in gift wrap and watch it enjoy tearing it open, then watch it figure out how to crack the nut.
