King Fire District 28 vacancy to be filled in December By Dennis Box Editor
The process to fill a vacancy on the three-member King County Fire District 28 board of commission is under way. Position No. 3 became vacant when Chris Ingham resigned the seat June 10. He was elected in 2009. There were two years remaining on his term.
King County Councilman Reagan Dunn’s office announced in a release a five-member Citizen Advisory Panel has be formed to review the applications for the position. The members of the panel are Mayor Liz Reynolds, Rep. Christopher Hurst, fire commissioners Dave Hannity, Angela Stubblefield and Enumclaw Firefighters IAFF Local 3931
President John Bloomer. Dunn’s office will accept applications for the commission vacancy through 4 p.m. Friday. Those interested in applying are asked to submit a letter of interest and a one-page resume to Reagan. Dunn@kingcounty.gov. Anyone interested in seeking the commission appointment must be a registered voter living within the boundaries of the district to serve as a commissioner. According to the release from Dunn’s office, “The (advisory) panel will thoroughly vet and review the candidates and will forward up to three qualified candidates to Councilman Dunn who

No charges are being filed against a local man who shot and killed an intruder during the late-evening hours of Nov. 18. It was approximately 11 p.m. when a 21-year-old man drove his vehicle through a gate and crashed into cars parked in the driveway. According to information provided by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, Enumclaw resident Cole Mathews began screaming and breaking windows in the rural home. The residents heard the ruckus and took action. While the wife locked herself in a bedroom and called 911, her husband, 67, armed himself with a gun. Police reports show the intruder
See INTRUDER, Page 3 in turn will bring these names forward to the (King) County Council. The council will vote on filling the vacancy at its Dec. 9 council meeting.” A second vacancy on the board was filled in July after former Commissioner Ryan Terhune was injured during an off-road motorcycle accident in Idaho. Larry Jensen was chosen to fill the position. The seat was on the November ballot and Angie Stubblefield won over Elbert Reed. Dunn’s office stated the applicants from July will be, “automatically considered by the panel, should the applicant wish to be considered again.”

The cost of living in the city of Enumclaw apparently will increase slightly during the coming year. The seven members of the City Council will make everything official Dec. 9 when they formally adopt a 2014 municipal budget, but the numbers being considered haven’t changed much from the 2013 spending plan. Throughout the state, property taxes are limited to a 1 percent bump annually, an increase the city plans to implement. Presently, property owners are paying nearly $1.39 for every $1,000 of assessed
property value. Plans for 2014 now call for a rate increase of a little more than a penny per $1,000 of assessed value, or less than $3 per year. The owner of a property – home and land – valued at $250,000 would pay city property taxes of $349.45 during 2014. Of course, the city collects just a small portion of the total property tax bill. Other taxing entities – school, library and fire districts, for example – add significantly to a property owner’s final tax bill. Another element in the city budget that hits residents in the pocketbook is utilities.
INTRUDER FROM 1 kicked in a door, entered the home, chased the husband and began punching him. At that point, the homeowner fired shots from his handgun, hitting the intruder, who died at the scene. Police reports indicate Mathews and the homeowner did not know each other and, further, that no words were spoken during the fight. Witness reported the suspect’s
The good news for residents is that most numbers appear to be staying flat for the coming year. There is no increase planned for natural gas and just 1 percent increases built into the budget for water and wastewater services. There’s a 2 percent increase planned for trash disposal. The rate hike is needed to meet desired reserves and in anticipation of higher rates charged by King County for garbage disposal, according to the city’s 2014 budget document. City customers also pay taxes on their utilities, but the city is not looking at bumping up those rates.
car left the roadway at a high rate of speed. The homeowner was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and due to concerns about previous heart issues, according to the PCSD. The sheriff’s report said the suspect “reeked of marijuana” and that a toxicology report would determine if other substances were in his system. The incident occurred in a rural area on 164th Street East, south of South Prairie and west of Wilkeson.
St. Elizabeth Hospital held its third annual “Bras for the Cause” event on Thursday, Oct. 24. This year included a judged exhibition of 25 decorated bra entries submitted by community artists, hors d’oeuvres created by the Cornerstone Café, a raffle, a silent auction, and shopping with local vendors. Attendees had the pleasure of hearing from Donna Elzenga, the founder of Bras for the Cause in Enumclaw and Susan Grasdahl, a representative from the Puget Sound Susan G. Komen Foundation. Dr. Wilke was also honored for the care she provides to breast cancer patients on the Plateau. The judges this year
were St. Elizabeth Hospital President Donna Russell-Cook, Enumclaw Mayor Liz Reynolds, Buckley Mayor Pat Johnson and Black Diamond Mayor Rebecca Olness. The first place entry was titled “Mammograms...Corset Saves Lives!” and submitted by Debra Lynne. The first place entry also won the “People’s Choice Award”, which was voted on by the people in attendance. Second place was titled “Chicken Breasts” and submitted by Neighbors Feeding Neighbors and the third place entry was entitled “Spellbound” and submitted by Geneva Devine. There were about 160 people in attendance and about $3,500 was raised. The funds will support the mammogram screening project at St. Elizabeth which allows uninsured and under insured women in the plateau area to receive potentially life saving mammograms and follow up care. ears ago my daughter and I learned first-hand the power in a simple Biblical command. “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. “ I Thessalonians 5:18 We were both fighting depression. Bobbi’s wrong choices robbed us both of the freedoms we once enjoyed. A long prison sentence loomed ahead because of her controlled substance abuse. Drugs no longer ruled my daughter’s life, but the eight and one-half years behind bars during her thirties robbed her of the opportunity to have children of her own. I dreaded more years of driving long distances to spend an hour or two with her in a crowded visiting room. Long years of frustrating shopping trips wore me down. No, she couldn’t have any red clothes; even though red had always been my favorite for her. Okay, maybe
blue would work. No, it was too close to the color the officers wore. Could I get her a black top that would go with everything? No, black was never allowed. Could I purchase needed articles at Value Village and save a bit of the extra expense? No. All clothing must be new, and it must have the tags to prove it. She needed a coat to protect her during long hours spent standing exposed to weather while the officers counted the women over and over. Would the coat I loved, pink and white with a grey lining, do? No. Grey was being denied. Any clothing sent in, if not approved, she must mail out. Her thirty-one cent per hour wages must stretch to cover all her lotions, shampoo, and health needs. Could she afford seven dollars to mail out a package? No way! But that’s what they charged. Bobbi and I struggled for five years to adjust to the constant changing of prisons, rules, roommates and family tensions pre-
cipitated by her presence there. Heaviness of heart over those issues plus family health complications and deaths tempted us toward self pity. Frustrations multiplied. Her sixth Christmas behind bars approached. We used one of our precious visits to come up with a plan. What decision did we make? Restrictions and limitations would no longer frame our lives. We would destroy their power by counting our blessings. November, Year Six Bobbi’s list began: I Am Thankful For: Daylight savings time happened. Now I’m able to read my Bible in sunlight instead of darkness. I actually had clean sheets given to me at linen exchange. Sometimes they are dirty, or dusty. The rain. The salmon need it, the wildlife need it, and skiers appreciate the snow. No one was killed in the mudslide event at Snoqualmie Pass. I didn’t have to work today. A new student attended exercise class today. My roommates. Mail. I got a letter from Mom and a sister in Christ. No new rules today. Some of the staff are approachable; they care, and it’s nice to see. My Mom has been so good at sending pictures. Because of her pictures I wake up every morning smiling at my family. I’m clean. I’m not “on the
Little
sheets” any more. I’m healing. I’m loved. Gas prices have gone down so it doesn’t cost my family so much to visit me. I have a voice. I like to sing. I am doing better mentally this week. I’m not nearly as discouraged. My prayers are being answered. I’m more at peace. Dear Mom, Hi! This list is for you. It helped. Great idea. I will continue writing down things I’m thankful for. It helps me dwell on something more positive. I love you. I hope you are doing better, too. I’m praying for you, Grandma and CB. You’re the greatest of friends. I have a wonderful Mom, and mentor. Love, Bobbi Yes, I felt better. My mood, thoughts, and imaginings improved. My energy levels increased and I accomplished more daily. How wonderful we can turn our thoughts toward God and deepen our happiness. “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise.” Psalm 100:4

• Cayuse closed for the season, Chinook open a little longer It looks like SR 410 over Chinook Pass will be open a little longer, while the heaping helping of winter was too much to keep SR 123 over Cayuse clear. About this time every year, the state Department of Transportation closes both mountain passes for the winter due to icy conditions and avalanche danger. If you plan to take one more trip through this section of Mount Rainier National Park, make sure you stay up to date with the current conditions and come prepared for winter driving. • This is the time of year we typically see a spike in collisions between vehicles and wildlife. It’s easy to see why. Colder temperatures send deer and elk down to the lowlands looking for food. It’s harvest season and animals go where the food is. It’s also both hunting and mating season for elk and deer and that means even more movement. The Department of Fish and Wildlife has taken steps to try to prevent wildlife-vehicle collisions but it’s always a great idea to be on extra alert during these colder months, especially in more rural areas. Let’s try to keep our fourwheeled vehicles and our four-legged friends as safe as possible.

How can it be November? Already! It’s the time of red and gold, lingering greens and bright oranges, all shouting in chorus, “See me now, while I’m here. Remember, a long cold winter is coming.” In our yard and the Learns’ the Espinosa trees hold long sprays of rosy-pink blooms-turned –to- seeds, waiting to assure the continuation of copious life as well as ensure our fall raking chore is cut out for us. The first hard frost will paint our lawns in silvery whiteness, the last leaves will fall and the trees will stand nakedly for several months, resting until Spring invites tiny lime green sprouts to her resurrection party. Yellow/gold/green pumpkins, squash, and gourds of every size and shape, join the autumn explosion of color. Wreaths, overflowing baskets, flower sprays, and scarecrows lining walls and aisles fill our senses to overflowing, and we search for that last corn on the cob in the grocery stores and last zucchini in the garden. Multicolored giant hydrangeas gifted by the Learns, settled into a crystal vase, grace our coffee table. Fields of pumpkins amaze us with their bumper crops. Corn- grown-tall hides mazes trampled by uncounted Halloween ghosts and goblins. Heart-felt thanksgiving, in such a season as this, comes easily. It’s the time when our families gather, tell varied versions of the family past designed to make us laugh, exchange hugs, and share inspirations and accomplishments. I sit with pen and empty sheet of paper writing the good things that fill my life. When the page can hold no more, I get another and continue my exercise in giving thanks. As I write I recognize how rich I am, and my heart lifts. I contemplate a new habit, realizing it’s difficult to be depressed while I appreciate my blessings. Won’t you join me?

Maybe the plan is Letters is party of the past, to duck and dodge GOP not inclined to change I have always been fascinated by words and usage. I can often tell what a speaker or writer doesn’t want me to know by the duck-and-dodge words and usage. Journalism is, in theory, centered on clear writing. There is an old adage that journalists should write for eighth-grade readers. The idea is to dumb down the copy because people can’t understand the journalist’s big words. I think that adage is dumb. Most folks I know can read copy very well, they just don’t want to be bored or preached to by opinions masquerading as news. (Of course there are many who love opinion journalism as long as it feeds Dennis Box them their opinion. Editor Suppression of the other guys’ dopey ideas is alive and growing.) What prompted this column was a news article I read about layoffs at a metro newspaper in another state. The writer quoted an executive who said the editorial reductions (that means layoffs) will come from, “non-readerfacing functions.” Non-reader-facing functions – roll that one through your brain a few times. (Careful, it may kill memory cells. The antidote is to down a tall glass of buttermilk.)
LAST WEEK: Fifty years after the fact, do you believe the official report regarding President Kennedy’s death?
Mr. Rich Elfers’ article about Republicans being the party of change – with a question mark, no less – makes me wonder if conservatives are now liberals. No, probably not. Both parties have their own ideas and they have had their own ideas for a long, long time. The term conservative means opposed to change, but Republicans certainly
seem to effect change. For instance, George W. Bush, remember that guy? George changed 60 percent of the people where I work from having jobs to not having jobs. George changed our work week from five days to three days. George changed the remaining work force from having health insurance to not having health insurance. Again, remember, this wasn’t that long ago. But this isn’t even the half of it. George changed the real estate market. Millions lost their homes. George changed the stock market, look out below; it lost thousands of points.
George changed the job market…millions lost their jobs. And now they want to privatize Social Security. If Republicans show me Herbert Hoover, I’ll show them George W. Bush, two peas in the same pod. The next Republican president, let me guess – Hoover, Herbert Hoover. Republicans are not the party of change, they are the party of the past and so was George W. Bush, a person with a very bad case of what is known as Hooveritis. A horrible disease. Lee Stout Buckley
Lot to be learned from election Elections are always a learning opportunity about human nature. This most recent election was no exception. There was much to learn about how people think and respond. I’d like to share six major tentative conclusions. These conclusions are not based upon statistical data or scientific observation; they are just anecdotal (stories) that I’m going to use to illustrate my perspectives. Campaign signs: In one of the Enumclaw City Council races, one candidate put up a lot of signs and his opponent didn’t put up any. The one who put up signs won. It seems that if a candidate doesn’t put up any signs, people conclude that he/ she doesn’t care. In the fire commissioner and Proposition 1 races, both sides posted signs, but the ones with more signs lost the contest. People don’t seem to vote based upon the number of signs. The advantage of long-term resi-

dence: There seems to be a belief in Enumclaw, and I’m guessing elsewhere, too, that if someone has lived his/her whole life in a town, that person automatically cares more about their community than someone who has not. I’ve seen this occur several times in my 22 years in Enumclaw. The need for community involvement: To get elected a candidate has to have some level of community involvement. Each candidate needs a reservoir of voters who personally know the candidate and his/ her level of involvement to the
city: Rotary, Arts Alive!, Plateau Outreach Ministries, Neighbors Feeding Neighbors, or the Chamber of Commerce, to name a few. The most successful candidates are those who are involved in community service. That’s a lesson for future candidates. Anti-union sentiment: One candidate had a long association with a union. This may not have set well with some people, especially conservative business types. Americans are individualistic and unions are collectivist (strength in numbers). Unions run against this individualistic grain of American culture. Let me hasten to add that unions do play an important part in helping to create a middle class in America. They are necessary to maintaining checks and balances with business. Having been both in a union and also in management, I can see the

100 Years on the Plateau! This photo from the early 1950s was taken inside the Landsburg coal mine north of Enumclaw, near Ravensdale. The photo was likely taken by a reporter for the Renton News Record who was accompanying members of the Renton Housing Authority as part of a tour of the mine. At the time Palmer Coking Coal, the mine operator, was promoting its coal during the annual bid process to service the needs of homes owned by the Renton Housing Authority which burned coal for heat. CORNER FROM 6 Apparently that is how we be should be talking to eighth graders. Johnny, please stop acting like a non-readingpinheaded-little-puke and begin your non-math-veryboring functions. If there are non-readerfacing functions are there n o t-n on-r e a d e r-f a c i n g functions? Am I a not-non or a non? Do I want to be a not-non or a non? If you’re getting laid off are you a not-non or a non? Maybe this is all some sort of dirty talk that I am too old to understand. Could it be some sort of non-something-something function that happens when you do-somethingsomething and that function then become a notnon? Or maybe it is secret agent code. It was placed in this news article for another secret agent. If the agent stands on one leg, holds the article upside down and sings the White Album backward the code will be revealed. There’s nothing like a
bother me. It also troubles me that such a small percentage of eligible voters actually sent in their ballots. The percentage was in the low forties. Such low numbers show to me that voters aren’t really tracking what what’s going on in local government. In conclusion, these are six unscientific generalizations gleaned from the recent election that gave me a deeper understanding of Enumclaw and it’s voting populace. For a political junkie like me, they are the meat and potatoes of my life. I spend many hours pondering the idiosyncrasies of human behavior and dynamics of these local elections.
good mystery. Where is Alfred Hitchcock when we need him? I wonder if God knows what a not-non is. I bet he has to ask Mikey. “Hey, Mikey. What’s a not-non? “A what?” “A not-non?” “I don’t know. Where’s the dictionary?”
“I don’t know. Why can we never find a dictionary when we need it?” I wonder if non-readerfacing function will show up in the Oxford English dictionary next year. I suspect the first definition would be clear – to duck-and-dodge and try your best to not say what you mean.

arguments from both sides. The power of the press: I was pleased to have The Courier-Herald run several candidate debates, both for the fire district issues and city council candidates. My experience on the city council taught me early that the Fourth Estate—the media—plays an extremely important role in educating the public about the issues before government bodies. I have come to believe that government does not function well without a strong and involved press. You may have noticed The Courier-Herald did
not take any stands on candidates or issues; instead it allowed candidates to speak for themselves, using their own words, instead of a reporter’s. I liked this approach because it took away any potential bias from the paper’s writers. Voter turnout and those who voted for candidates who withdrew: Two candidates for city council had withdrawn, one early, and one in the last weeks of the election. Both got about 40 percent of the vote. This fact absolutely amazed me. What were the voters thinking? Was it a protest vote? Were that many voters detached from the facts that they voted out of ignorance? I don’t know, but the high numbers deeply

White River ends state run Area athletes
among SPSL’s all-league picks
By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer
Enumclaw football
Thirteen Hornets were recognized when league coaches made their postseason picks. Heading the all-league list were a pair of first-team performers, offensive lineman Sam Fisher and linebacker Mauricio Portillo. Both are seniors. Second-team picks included senior Evan McCrillis, named as both a linebacker and returner, along with senior offensive lineman Chandler Streuli, senior defensive back Mitchell Hammond; juniors named to the second team were receiver Trey Rodarte and defensive lineman Eli Dennison. Two Hornets made the honorable mention list twice, senior Nick Conrad as a tight end and linebacker and seniors Peter Nordby as a punter and defensive back. Portillo, McCrillis and senior Cameron Strecker were honorable mention running backs. Also receiving honorable mention were senior offensive linemen Logan Chlebowski and Brendon Streeper, senior defensive lineman Bailey Deters and junior defensive back Tarik Hagan.

But the Thunderbirds were just getting started. Tumwater scored on its first possession of the second half – a pass to Griffin Shea - and quickly regained possession following a Hornet fumble. One play later, the Thunderbirds were again in the end zone,
thanks to a 33-yard run by Easton Trakel. Adding 14 points in 22 seconds pushed Tumwater’s lead to 28-7 and the rout was on. The Thunderbirds put 10 more on the board before the third quarter expired. During the fateful second half, White River punted three times and
lost three fumbles. While the Hornets stow away their gear and put the finishing touches on an 8-4 season, Tumwater advances to the Class 2A quarterfinals for the second year in a row. The Thunderbirds will head across the Cascades to face the Prosser Mustangs in a Final Four pairing.
A pair of EHS players – senior Olivia Bannerot and sophomore Barbie Becker – were named to the SPSL 3A first team. Making the second team were junior Hayley Sonneson and sophomore Victoria Hernandez. Additionally, the volleyball squad compiled an aggregate grade-point average of 3.91, the best of any Class 3A team in the state.

Members of this year’s White River High football team will remember posting eight victories, a district win and a triumph in the opening round of the state playoffs that propelled them into the Class 2A’s Elite Eight. They will most likely try to forget how the season came to a crushing close. On a frigid Saturday afternoon at Orting Stadium, the Hornets fell to powerful Tumwater 45-7 to see their 2013 campaign come to an abrupt halt. Kicking things off at 4 p.m. Nov. 23, White River had already managed something no Hornet team had done since 2004 – simply making the state playoffs. And, on the team’s first possession, White River gave its vocal fans even more to cheer about. After taking advantage of a Tumwater red-zone fumble, the Hornets put together an 87-yard drive that chewed up 87 yards and was capped when Keenan Fagan burst into the end zone from a yard out. Alex Morris tacked on the extra-point and Tumwater found itself trailing for the first time this postseason. Unfortunately for White River and the Hornet faithful, there was little more to celebrate. Top-ranked teams tend to respond to adversity and Tumwater posted two

EMS students get to know High Point folks My leadership class at Enumclaw Middle School recently went on a field trip to High Point Village. We played bingo and interviewed some of the senior citizens who live there. It was a very calm and quiet atmosphere. “It was great getting to know everybody,” student Bryce Thompson said after the trip. “It was a great experience,” James Roddy, another student in my class said. “It was really fun and I really enjoyed getting to know them,” Susel Torres, a fellow classmate said. My favorite part was sitting down and really getting to know the residents. The residents appeared to really enjoy having some kids to sit down and talk to. I interviewed Paul and Walter. Paul told me he moved to Enumclaw when it was still very small with about 1,500 citizens. He grew up in South Dakota and moved to Enumclaw after military service. He is most proud of being an American and John F. Kennedy is his hero. Walter said he moved to Enumclaw a year ago and he loves the mountains, clouds and horses. He grew up in Switzerland and loves to ski in the mountains there.
Emily Lewis, left, and Peyton Brueher (top photo) were among the eighth-grade students who recently visited High Point Village and spoke with residents about their life experiences. Also taking part, in lower photo, were eighth graders Bryce Thompson, left, and Kyle Morgan. Photos provided by Karl Karkainen.
I learned that some of the elders really care about kids. I also learned that the residents like to tell kids about stories in their life and that many of them really care about World War II and when it ended. Some other students and I are working on possibly returning sometime and being volunteers. We would like to continue to talk to them and hear more stories from their lives. Our class would like to say “thanks” to the residents and staff at High Point Village for a great experience. Makenzie Fong Eighth grade

Garden Club making a difference For the eighth year in a row, the Enumclaw Garden Club, in conjunction with Make A Difference Day, a nationwide program to do community service beautifying the your local community, recently completed maintenance of the Foothills Trail near Warner Avenue and state Route 410. This park is the most used park in Enumclaw. This year’s project was completed by 30 women from the Enumclaw Garden Club, with the help of about 20 Scouts and a number of parents from Troop 422. The city of Enumclaw is in charge of this park, and does a good job of mowing and cutting back the brush. The Garden Club has a contract with the city to do the maintenance on the planting beds. The Wilkeson Sandstone Quarry trucked in loads of soil to create the raised beds, donated the sandstone and installed the stone pathways. A Special Arts Project in the Garden Club, commissioned Al Croppi, an Enumclaw artist, to build the arch on the south side of Warner Avenue, funded through a Garden Art section in the annual spring plant sale, as well as other projects. The Principal Group awarded the club a grant that helped fund the Blue Star Marker, benches and drinking fountain area. There have also been four Eagle Scout projects along the trail helping with some of the infrastructure. The Enumclaw Garden Club donated several benches along the trail honoring garden club members. Please go out and enjoy this great resource. – submitted by Ginny Montgomery, EGC president

Keep the holidays safe for your furry friends Welcome to Buckley Veterinary Hospital’s monthly pet care column. The holiday season is here! This month we are discussing keeping your pets safe and healthy during the holidays, including the importance of not feeding table scraps to avoid stomach upset and intestinal obstructions, and reducing your pet’s anxiety. While the holidays are a time filled with spirit and festive gatherings, it can also be a very stressful time for our pets. We put together some helpful recommendations below from the American Veterinary Medical Association and ASPCA on how to plan a safe holiday for your furry family members.
Provide solitude
Guests may cramp your pet’s style, so keep their favorite place free from the holiday clamor so they can relax. If a spare room or pet crate isn’t available, think about boarding your pet for a few days if they become too anxious amid the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
Keep poisonous and dangerous plants away
Plants like mistletoe and poinsettia are poisonous and ingested pine needles can cause digestive tract blockage. Keep your pet from ingesting/chewing on these plants and you will likely save yourself a trip to your veterinarian or emergency vet.
Decorate safely
There are a variety of decorations that can cause problems for your pet. Ribbons and tinsel are frequently implicated in veterinary hospital bowel obstructions. Light cords, when chewed or frayed, can cause severe burns or electrocution. Prevent these mishaps by keeping decorations out of reach or secured in an inaccessible area.
Make holiday trips safe and prepare in advance
Take special precautions when traveling with your pet no matter how you choose to travel. Flying or driving over state/country lines often may require a health certificate and/or proof of vaccinations. Before departing, consult with your veterinarian/ airlines about how to properly prepare for a trip.
Table scraps aren’t pet snacks
Many holiday foods are loaded with fat and sodium and can cause stomach upset. Chicken bones can easily get stuck in the digestive tract and other foods like chocolate or onions can be poisonous. In short, people food is meant for people, not pets. Be greedy and keep it for yourself. Because chocolate can cause illness and even death in pets, it should be avoided completely. Chocolate contains theobromine, a potent cardiovascular and central

Family pets face some additional risks from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season – but taking a few simple precautions can keep cats and dogs safe and happy. nervous system stimulant that is eliminated very slowly in pets. If your pet experiences chronic or occasional stomach upset, consider discussing diet recommendations with your veterinarian. As you count down to the new year, please keep in mind that strings of thrown confetti can get lodged in a pet’s intestines, if ingested, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers and fireworks can cause anxiety and cause possible damage to a pet’s sensitive ears. Most of these recommendations sound like they take the fun out of the holidays, right? NAME FROM 15 around the main floor halls with some of my friends. My last name was Rogers. The guys would tease me by telling me, “What stupid name is Rogers! Where did they come up with a weird name like that?” They would tease me about my last name for about a week. I thought I had to nip that in the bud or they would always tease me about something else. I asked them one day, “Do you know Roy Rogers and Dale Evans?” “Sure, everybody knows Roy Rogers
and Dale Evans”, they answered. “Well, they are my aunt and uncle.” They answered “No, way.” I told them our last name is spelled the same. They agreed it was spelled the same. I told them my family went down to California about every summer to their beautiful ranch, we rode Trigger and played with Bullet their dog, and they were a great uncle and aunt. I told them they could tease me all they wanted for I was lucky to have them as my aunt and uncle. I was right about the teasing stopping after I told them I was related to someone famous. I confess I wasn’t related to Roy

Rogers nor Dale Evans. In fact, I never left Washington state until Dave and I were married in 1961. Our first home was in Point Arena, Calif. My Rogers name comes from a long line of Colliers (coal miners) that were in the country of Wales. My grandfather, Joseph Matthias Rogers, was born in Rhos-Llanerch-Rugog North Wales. In 1930, 17 Rogers were lost at a mine disaster at the Geresford Mine in Wales. My great grandfather, William Rogers, told his four sons to leave the mines and find better work that was safer. My grandpa came to America in 1906 at the age of 21. He ended up in
Western Washington and found work here in the coal mines here. He married Elizabeth Jane Jones Burke, a widow, with two small children Ann and John. They had 11 more children: Llewelyn (Lew),Margaret, Hannah, twins Morthydd Elizabeth (Lizzie), Myfanwy (Movano), Enoch, William Griffith Rogers (our dad), Joseph Matthias Rogers Junior, Gwendolyn, and Ada. Our grandpa passed away in 1954 from black lung caused by the coal dust the miners breathed in their lungs. Now, everyone knows the true story of my last name of Rogers. I am proud of my real last name.

Sometimes Help is a U-Haul Truck By Britt Nelson Director, Plateau Outreach Ministries
928665
Each holiday season Plateau Outreach Ministries uses this space to share with the community the stories of families that we have been able to help because of your generosity. Each week our volunteers and staff serve 80 to 95 families in our Food Bank and another 30 families or so who need emergency financial assistance with the most basic needs of life. Their requests are varied but often similar – food, clothing, utilities, medical prescriptions, shelter, or simply a sympathetic ear. But we have the same goal for every person or family we meet – a path out of crisis and into stability. Every story is unique. David’s is one of them. David (not his real name) is a 70-year-old veteran. He lived for 30 years in an apartment in Spokane supporting himself. He was called to come help family here on the plateau, so he moved here to live with his daughter. After a number of years here, his daughter divorced. The household disintegrated. Following the divorce, the home went into foreclosure. David stayed in the home as long as possible, with the bank showing up regularly to ask him to leave. He had no place to go. When David came to Plateau Outreach Ministries, we started looking for housing options. All of his belongings were already moved into a storage unit and he was soon to be living in his car. David was

on Medicaid and all of the senior apartment options in Enumclaw were full. As we met with David, we realized he still had friends in Spokane. We started looking for senior apartments in Spokane with Medicaid openings. Success! We found a spot and helped David begin to fill out paperwork. The story doesn't end here. David needed help not only finding a place to live, but cleaning out his storage unit, packing, moving and finding furniture for his new apartment in Spokane. As POM case managers made phone calls, one connection led to another-- a friend of a friend, someone who knew someone who could help. POM case managers and volunteers spent hours helping sort through belongings and packed boxes. A friend of David’s was willing to drive him and a U-Haul from Enumclaw to Spokane. Once he arrived in Spokane, the same friend called on a church community to help unpack and move him in. Today David is happy in his new apartment and supported by a new community. Your gifts help us to help our neighbors in very unique ways. For David it wasn't a utility bill or a rent check. It took creativity, phone calls, cleaning, packing and a U-Haul truck. Because of you we were able to help a neighbor avoid homelessness and not only move into stability, but into a new life of happiness.

Two juvenile suspects were arrested the afternoon of Nov. 20 for allegedly making a bomb threat at Bonney Lake High School. Students and staff were evacuated the morning before when the note was discovered. The Bonney Lake Police Department, assisted by a Pierce County Sheriff ’s Department bomb detecting K9, conducted a search of the school and found no evidence of weapons or explosives. A break in the investigation came when police identified the suspects by video surveillance. Detective work confirmed what the video footage implied. The two suspects were booked into Remann Hall. One of the suspects has been charged with threats to bomb or injury property, according to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Officer. The second suspect had not been charged at the time of press. Sumner School District Superintendent Sara Johnson said it was an empty threat but the law doesn’t take the matter lightly and neither does school administration. “… in every case we have had a bomb threat, we have identified the student/s involved and have followed the discipline policy. We have no tolerance for bomb threats and regret the instructional time lost and the inconvenience and disruption caused by inappropriate student behavior,” Johnson wrote in an email. The suspects faced an emergency expulsion upon identification, in accordance with district policy. The district dictates a thorough assessment to be completed at a later date, which will provide a permanent determination for the students involved, according to Johnson. According to Todd Green, the police department’s dedicated school resource officer, evacuation of the school is avoided when possible. However, the potential danger outweighed the inconvenience, he said.

your pets on special occasions. Use dry food by grinding it into flour using a blender, then add water until it is the consistency of dough. Make into cookie shapes and bake on a cookie sheet for approximately 30 minutes at 350 degrees. In regard to anxiety, our veterinarians offer several avenues to help cope with changes in your pet’s environment and stress from noise and high traffic during the holiday. Some owners would rather not use drugs to treat a stressed dog or cat. One alternative you might see on store shelves are pheromone-based products in various forms, including sprays, plug-in diffusers, wipes and collars. Cat pheromones can help with problems like scratching and stress while traveling, being boarded or during visits to the veterinarian’s office, and can ease the stress of a cat moving into a new home. Dog pheromone products are used for general stress, separation anxiety, noise phobias
like those caused by storms or fireworks, and travel. Depending on the underlying causes of these issues, pheromone products can make a noticeable improvement or aid as a supplementary treatment. Light sedatives can be prescribed under severe circumstances to aid in calming you pet’s. Herbal remedies and flower essence formulas designed to ease anxiety can often provide relief for pets – many work well in conjunction with veterinary treatment. Please consult your veterinarian if you have questions regarding your pet’s stress during the holidays. If you feel that your pet may have ingested something abnormal, as we have mentioned in this month’s article, immediate veterinary attention is recommended to avoid severe complications. Education and prevention are key. Thank you to our readers – we welcome you back next month. Please, send questions, comments, or suggestions for future columns to us at info@buckleyvet.com. Happy holidays!

Jeremy McCleary’s professional boxing debut was a successful one, as the White River High product fought his way to a unanimous decision in a fourround bout. McCleary, 19, was on the undercard for the Nov. 2 Battle of the Boat 93, staged at Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma. While he has just the one

Before fighting for a paycheck, McCleary built an amateur record of 50-19, was a three-time Junior Golden Gloves champion on the local level and once fought his way to an eighth-place showing on the national scene. Having been in the sport for seven years, McCleary

had been eyeing a transition into the professional ranks. He primarily trains out of the Prime Fitness gym in Bonney Lake where his manager, Brent Mounts, runs the show. Mounts is a veteran of the boxing game and was a member of Greg Haugen’s corner for 10 years as Haugen made an impressive run through the lightweight ranks. “Jeremy has what it takes,” Mounts said. “He’s only 19 years old, but fights like a 25-year-old pro.” When asked how he got into the boxing game, McCleary explains it was a family favorite – even though his father didn’t take to the idea of his son stepping into the ring. “Boxing has always been a family thing,” McCleary said. “We would all go over to my uncle’s house to watch the fights. My dad never wanted me to get into boxing, but I went to the gym one day and have been doing it ever since.” Like all boxing prospects, McCleary was given what was hoped to be a soft opener – paired against an opponent it appeared he could beat. On Nov. 2, he stepped in against Manuel Ortega, who launched his

BOXER FROM 29 career with a split-decision victory before losing five consecutive bouts. Fighting at 132 pounds, McCleary had some shaky moments but was the winner in the eyes of all three judges. According to a ringside reporter, McCleary was the cleaner boxer during the first two rounds, using his quickness to double up with his jab and follow it with his right. Ortega landed a sharp left to McCleary’s jaw and the conclusion of the second round, but couldn’t take advantage

in the third. Jabbing and moving, McCleary eventually opened a cut above Ortega’s right eye. During the fourth and final round, Ortega had success early, but McCleary’s quickness kept his opponent off balance. At the end of four rounds, two judges scored the fight 39-37 while the third judge scored things 40-36, all in McCleary’s favor. “The most impressive aspect of (McCleary’s) performance was the poise that he showed in the ring,” reported fight publicist Anthony Woods. “In the scheduled four round fight, McCleary also showed that his conditioning was on point as he never slowed up throughout any part
of the bout while he fired precise shots with a flash of power. He had good movement, avoiding a majority of the punches being thrown his way.” Woods said McCleary is not slated to appear on the next Battle at the Boat fight card, but there’s still a chance he could be added to the Jan. 11 event.
