City Council looks at ways to spend extra funds

HEART, HOME FOR OTHERS

For 26 years, woman has been a warm host for foreign exchange students from all walks of life BY ROSS COYLE rcoyle@kentreporter.com

ent resident Sally Goodgion has a rather large “extended family.” More than 50 people, to be precise, from all parts of the globe. They’re not blood related, of course. Some were adopted sons and daughters and the large majority have been hosted foreign exchange students. Host families can have one of the most impactful experiences in a visiting student’s life. When Chinese then-vicepresident Xi Jinping traveled to the U.S. last year, he made a point to visit the Iowa family he spent two days with while on an agricultural research study. Goodgion has hosted students studying abroad since 1987. In the past 26 years she has hosted more than 40 students, ranging from the sons and daughters of affluent families to Bangladeshi teenagers from villages without running water.

With extra money in the city budget for the first time in several years, the Kent City Council plans to spend some of it. The council is considering hiring six more police officers, replacing the Wilson Playfields synthetic turf and paying a consultant to help bring more retail businesses, such as a Costco, to town. Council members also might add a city jail corrections officer and an administrative assistant to the police chief. Tom Brubaker, city interim chief administrative officer, told the council Brubaker there’s about $1.9 million extra for next year with revenues exceeding expenses. That extra is on top of the cash set aside in a reserve fund of $4.4 million and a contingency fund of $1.5 million for unanticipated costs. “We have $1.9 million but we have a lot of staffing needs, capital needs and debt,” Brubaker said. Brubaker added that although 2013 has been a good year even with conservative forecasting the city would spend more than its brings in over the next four years. [ more BUDGET page 5 ]

Superintendent Edward Lee Vargas of the Kent School District (KSD) was named last Friday the 2014 Superintendent of the Year by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA). The announcement was made at WASA’s Super-

intendents Component meeting in Bellevue, according to a WASA media release. The program is designed to recognize the outstanding leadership of active, front-line superintendents and pay tribute to those who lead public schools. Vargas will be a finalist for the 2014 National Super-

intendent of the Year award, to be announced at the AASA National Conference on Education in Nashville, Tenn., in February. Upon learning of the award, Vargas said in a prepared statement: “I am very grateful and tremendously honored [ more VARGAS page 2 ]

KSD board receives distinction honors for third year

[ VARGAS from page 1 ]

The Kent School District school board was named a Board of Distinction for the third consecutive year by the Washington State School Directors’ Association. Only 15 out of 295 Washington State boards received this distinction. The annual Boards of Distinction program honors school boards that demonstrate effective use of the Washington School Board Standards. The standards promote research-based governance practices that lead to high levels of student and district achievement. “Each of these boards has excelled in school

to have been selected as Washington's 2014 Superintendent of the Year, for I am among an outstanding group of fellow superintendents currently serving the educational needs of the students and families in Washington State. “Leadership is a team sport, and this would not have been possible without the exemplary teamwork of our school board, leadership team, classroom teachers, support staff, district partners, and our entire school community that has made my work as their superintendent a privilege, joy, and a tremendous source of pride,” Vargas said. “This honor is really about all of us in the Kent School District and

governance,” said Debbie Long, president of the association. “The boards had to rigorously document how their work was making a real difference for students. They are exceptional models of effective school boards.” Award applicants submit an essay and supporting evidence to demonstrate how they are putting the standards into practice. This year, applicants addressed the following: • Adopting policies based on well-researched practices that emphasize a belief that all students can achieve at high levels. • Ensuring non-nego-

tiable goals for student achievement are established and aligned to the district’s plan. • Ensuring management of the organization, operations, and resources for an efficient and effective learning environment. • Committing to continuous improvement in student achievement at each school and throughout the district. • Soliciting input from staff and a wide spectrum of the community so that a diverse range of interests and perspectives on issues is considered.

The Kent City Council approved a downtown development plan designed to bring in more residents and businesses over the next decade. “This is a good plan,” said Council President Dennis Higgins. “I’m really excited about the new opportunities it’s going to present to our city. It looks downtown in a more holistic way. It looks at Washington (Avenue) and the Kmart area as part of downtown. We had always thought of that as a different area in the past. “It gives us new opportunities to seek out new development and new life downtown. I sound like Star Trek. But I’m really pleased with the work (city staff ) did. I’m excited to see it implemented and excited to be around to see the fruits of it.” The council voted 6-1 on Nov. 19 to approve the downtown plan. Les Thomas voted against it. “I don’t think it has gone far enough with what the city will become,” Thomas said prior to the vote. The council agreed with the city’s Land Use and Planning Board to keep a half block north of James Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues, south of Cloudy Street, zoned for townhouses and condos rather than changing it to commercial use. The Platform Apartments in downtown Kent continue to take shape. Construction started in June on project at the corner of West Smith Street and Fourth Avenue North, site of the old unfinished parking garage. The apartments are expected to open by September 2014. asked the land use board to make that change after city staff recommended rezoning the half block near the ShoWare Center. “North Park residents got really active on this and didn’t like some of the recommendations and let us know about it,” said Fred Satterstrom, city planning director. “The recommendation in front of you has been changed to fall more in line with the wishes of the North Park neighborhood.” Satterstrom said the overall plan emphasizes downtown as a place to live. “One of the major emphasis is looking at downtown as a neighborhood,” he said. “There is a real emphasis to make downtown an area where people want to live.”

cafeteria, a bookstore and recreation rooms along with student services such as counseling, government and financial aid, which puts quite a strain on the existing structure. Some offices need room to grow but haven’t been able to because of crowding in the building, according to school officials. “If everybody is in the office where student leaders work, you can’t move around,” said Jaquie Chamberlain, a student who volunteers in student government. “Having the extra space and having it all in one area will be good.” The 65,000-square-foot building is to feature a number of new areas, including those being moved from the Lindbloom Center. In addition to the bookstore, stage and dining area, the new building will have

The 164 units of The Platform apartments under construction at Fourth Avenue North and West Smith Street fit in with the plan. “This time next year if they are all leased up, we’re looking at 200 to 300 new residents downtown,” Satterstrom said. “It’s a beginning. And this plan tries to remove the barriers that some our planning and zoning created. We’ve expanded the downtown area and removed zoning barriers for residential development.” Satterstrom said the plan also includes more street lighting and open spaces. “If we expect people to live downtown, they are going to want to walk around after they get home from work,” Satterstrom said. “The

Cheng said that Sam Ball, the school’s director of capital projects, is the main person behind the center’s start. Ball helped coordinate architects for project designs, engaged student focus groups for input on the center’s features and made sure that the project’s phases were progressing on schedule. The most important part of the planning? Making sure the students were involved. “We learned years and years ago to really

open space in downtown has to play a meaningful role in their outdoor experience if they are going to live here.” With more people living downtown, more businesses are expected to be attracted to the area to provide goods and services. “Density is good for business and that’s one of the emphasis of the plan,” Satterstrom said. City staff also plans to bring to the council a revitalization plan to bring more businesses to Meeker Street in the downtown area. Staff and council updated a 2005 downtown plan that already accomplished goals such as the development of the Kent Station shopping mall and Town Square Plaza park.

get the people involved,” Ball said. To facilitate this, Ball commissioned a number of student representatives on campus to act as liaisons in planning meetings with staff and the architects. Now that the school has adopted the plans, it plans to open bidding from contractors on Dec. 12. While Ball said there isn’t a clear figure, he estimates the center should cost about $31 million to complete by the end of 2014. Students funded the project by taxing themselves through a series of fees that began at $20 in 2007 and have increased to $45 over the past four years. The students elected to tax themselves to raise 45 percent of the funds and the college filled in the other 55 percent.

if the city of Kent decides to sell its par 3 course at the Riverbend Golf Complex. Colin Lund, chief entitlement officer of Kirklandbased developer Yarrow Bay, and David Hills, executive vice president of Freiheit and Ho architects in Kirkland, were invited by city staff to address the Kent City Council’s Parks and Human Services Committee on Nov. 21. The committee raised questions two months ago about whether there is interest in the development of the property. “That’s easy, the answer is yes,” Lund said at the meeting. “We’ve done quite a bit of market analysis and data research so we have good appreciation of what this market is willing to absorb at this time and the type of projects.”

[ GOODGION from page 1 ] “Some of them become just like my children,” she said. It’s kept the 71-year-old great-grandmother busy after the last of her four children moved out of the house in the 1980s. Goodgion’s student hosting work developed out of foster care for children. When her last foster child left her home, she slowed down and started hosting exchange students. She sees her role with the students as one of mentor and teacher instead of supervisor. She tries to facilitate them getting out to experience as many different facets of American life as she can, but also tries to learn from them about what life is like in their country. Such was her experience when meeting Tedmund Ferry, an exchange student from a wealthy Indonesian family. When she picked him up from the airport, Goodgion says that Ferry was sur-

City officials are trying to find a way to resolve the financially struggling Riverbend Golf Complex, which also includes an 18-hole course, driving range and pro shop. Proceeds from a par 3 course sale could cover Riverbend’s $2.3 million debt, its capital investment needs of about $400,000 per year and its annual operating losses, said Tom Brubaker, city interim chief administrative officer. “It’s really potentially the gateway to the western end of town through Meeker Street,” Hills said. “It has so many outstanding amenities such as the river, the river trail, recreational facilities and it has the potential to increase the pedestrian access to all of these points. It’s uniquely located in the river bend. “It introduces a lot of opportunities for a variety of uses whether it’d be retail

uses directly along Meeker Street, mixed-used residential use internally, professional service offices and even hotel properties.” Deborah Ranniger, chairwoman of the parks committee, said the next step is to refer the par 3 sale and potential development issue to the full council at a workshop. Brubaker said that discussion of selling the par 3 course would be on the council agenda in January or February. “It’s very intriguing and certainly worth exploring further,” Ranniger said. “We need to get the entire council engaged.” Riverbend’s operating losses and debt caused city officials to look at ways to get the complex selfsustainable financially. The facility has lost nearly $1.4 million over the last four years, including $220,903 in 2012, according to city doc-

uments. The debt is owed to an inter-fund loan, money that the city borrowed from its water and fleet funds to help pay off the bond for the golf complex. Parks Director Jeff Watling said if the council decides to sell the par 3 course, city staff has looked at making a par 3 course part of the 18-hole course by placing a set of tees at holes way forward in the fairway to create a shorter golf experience for youth or active seniors. He also discussed a piece of city property east of the driving range that could be used for three par 3 holes. The par 3 course has brought in just 10 percent of the complex’s revenue over the last five years, Watling said. The 18-hole course represents 48 percent of the revenue while the driving range/pro shop brings in 42 percent of the revenue.

prised that she didn’t have an employed driver. “He thought every American was very wealthy and had their own drivers,” she said. “It would have been hard, living in his world there, to really experience how the rest of the world was.” Small experiences like that are how Goodgion has managed to learn from her students while still teaching them about the world beyond their “bubbles.” Goodgion makes it her mission to show the students what life is like in America, from the highlights like Fourth of July barbecues to problems like homelessness and poverty. She works with the homeless Thursday nights, and always takes the students at least once to meet the homeless to show them how the other side of the U.S. lives. “I said that ‘I don’t want you to think that all people live in a house like mine, or all people live in homes

like my children live in,’” she said. Some students jump into the opportunities while others are more introverted and keep to themselves. Goodgion says she never tries to force the experiences on them and takes their lack of interest in stride. While she’s never put off by a lack of interest, she feels that the best home stays are those who express a genuine interest in discussing the differences of their country and the U.S. These are the students whom Goodgion connects with the best. One of her recent visitors, Khusnora Nazarova, embodied this point particularly well for her. “We would stay up, we’d build a bonfire at night, and we’d just talk for hours,” Goodgion said. “She had the most interesting questions about living in America.” And through the student’s questions and

discussion, Goodgion learns about where they come from and what their life is like. Living with such a variety of students has had a profound and positive impact on her life. On a practical level, the home stays have provided her with dozens of reasons to travel in her retirement years. She maintains good relationships with many of her visitors, and has stopped in to see them when she’s visiting their country. However, she says that that’s not the heart of why she keeps hosting students year after year. “It’s kept me young. That’s because you’re having to look through younger eyes when you’re living with them.” It provides perspective, she said. "When you have generations apart, you probably see (things) in your world instead of how do the young people see it today.

The book includes chapters of her personal life, before and after her military service. Duty away from home served her well. The experience and skills have led to a career as a security officer for Walsh, 44. “I joined the U.S. Army straight out of high school looking for an affordable education, but also for travel and adventure,” she wrote. “I would be a part of world history unfolding as I stood on top of the Berlin wall at the Brandenburg Gate the night the wall came down, and again nearly a year later when Berlin celebrated their nation’s reunification.” Walsh’s time in Berlin would shape her future. She met and married her husband, Ed, near a medieval castle by a lake in Denmark. They soon had a son, Ken. The family explored Europe, following in the footsteps of kings, conquerors and tyrants. The book’s reviews have been good. “I hope readers gain a

feeling of adventure (from the book),” Walsh said. Walsh one day would like to return to Germany, a place that has left a lasting impression on her. “There’s this overwhelming feeling of history,” Walsh said. “It fills you with such a sense of awe. It’s indescribable, the feeling it gives you. “I’ve always been fascinating by history, so to be in those places and see those things … is just amazing.”

The cost is to replace the turf is estimated at about $1.5 million, said Jeff Watling, city parks director. The rest of the funds for the turf replacement next year would come out of the capital projects fund. “We can use the existing budget and still build it but if we do that we would take away from other capital projects,” said Brubaker, who added other parks needs include new playground equipment and other general upkeep projects. Councilwoman Jamie Perry requested a specific list of park projects. “If there are things we can put off for a year, put them off,” Perry said as far as whether to spend $500,000 of the extra funds on Wilson Playfields.

Brubaker said he would provide specifics about the other park projects at the Dec. 10 council workshop. Ben Wolters, city economic and community development director, requested $60,000 to hire a consultant for recruitment and retention of retail businesses. “We want to bring in some expertise to see if in fact we are doing everything we can and if there is something we can do differently,” Wolters said. “We need to recruit more big-box retail. When I compare our community with others, we’re short especially for a city of 120,000 people. We don’t have a Costco. We don’t have a number of big boxes out there. We want to know what more we can do to better position ourselves.”

A Costco store would bring in an estimated $600,000 a year in sales tax revenue to the city, Wolters said. “Our residents are leaving the city to shop retail and we desperately need to increase our tax base,” Brubaker said. Wolters said part of the consultant money also would be spent to encourage companies with warehouses in Kent to open retail outlets at their locations. “Some jurisdictions around the country have had success in doing that,” Wolters said. “Certainly, we could try to figure that out ourselves, but we’d like to have a little help.” A majority of the council favored hiring a consultant to increase retail sales.

[ BUDGET from page 1 ] “In a good year we take in more than we spend,” Brubaker said. “In a bad year we won’t. So long term the general pattern is we have a structural imbalance. Right now, we’re doing a little better.” The council adopted its first two-year budget in December 2012, rather than voting each year on a budget. The decisions this year are adjustments to the 2013-14 budget. Mayor Suzette Cooke recommended six more police officers as well as spending $500,000 toward replacing the synthetic turf at Wilson Playfields, a popular soccer, baseball and softball complex along 132nd Avenue Southeast.

Marijuana ban hurts city fortunes I am extremely disappointed that the Kent City Council has decided to ban marijuana in the city. Turning down business opportunities and increased employment and the biggie, increased taxes. The city must be doing remarkably well and must not need any increased revenue. I am expecting the services in the city to increase and my taxes to go down. If this is not the case then I will scream loudly and consistently that you had a chance to get extra revenue and you turned it down. Do not come to me for extra money when you turn down legitimate opportunities. Get your collective heads out of the sand and join the 21st century.

Unions destroying jobs, area’s future I wonder if today’s unions and socialists (admitted or otherwise) realize to what extent they are destroying jobs and the area’s future, accelerating inflation and increasing depen-

dency on the government, if they just don’t care or if those are their goals. People tend to think that unions are for people, when actually unions are for unions, just as corporations are for corporations. As opposed to unions, corporations that do well create more jobs. You’d think that somewhere in K-12 education, students could get a few hours of economics and American history. Are people really so naïve as to think higher wages don’t lead to higher prices? If they don’t realize it now, they will when they’re retired (if they ever can) as I am and don’t get automatic pay increases every year. Americans need to be thankful for what we have today It is human nature to take things for granted. When you’ve always had something, when it’s been around your entire life, it’s only natural to overlook it, to think it will always be here. But that’s not the case, and this time of year reminds us to be appreciative of what we have. I’m not talking about creature comforts

like plentiful electricity, clean water, electronic gadgets or the family car. I’m talking about the freedom and opportunity we Americans take for granted. My epiphany came during the Cold War when my military unit was sent to the Czech border. Czechoslovakia was then part of the Communist Bloc, and its government and military were under the thumb of Soviet

Question of the week:

I have always been fascinated by words and usage. I can often tell what a speaker or writer doesn’t want me to know by the duckand-dodge words and usage. Journalism is, in theory, centered on clear writing. There is an old adage that journalists should write for eighth-grade readers. The idea is to dumb down the copy because people can’t understand the journalist’s big words. I think that adage is dumb. Most folks I know can read copy very well, they just don’t want to be bored or preached to by opinions masquerading as news. Of course, there are many who love opinion journalism as long as it feeds them their opinion. Suppression of the other guy’s dopey ideas is alive and growing. What prompted this column was a news article I read about layoffs at a metro newspaper in another state. The writer quoted an executive who said the editorial reductions – that means layoffs – would come from, “non-reader-facing functions.” Non-reader-facing functions – roll that one through your brain a few times. Careful, it may kill memory cells. The antidote is to down a tall glass of buttermilk. Apparently that is how we be should be talking to eighth-graders. Johnny, please stop acting like a non-reading-pinheaded-little-puke and begin your non-math-very-boring functions. If there are non-reader-facing functions are there not-non-reader-facing functions? Am I a not-non or a non? Do I want to be a not-non or a non? If you’re getting laid off, are you a not-non or a non? Maybe this is all some sort of dirty talk that I am too old to understand.

leaders in Moscow. There was a one-mile kill zone separating West Germany and Czechoslovakia. All trains crossing the border into West Germany would slowly move over pits of scalding water sprayed onto the undersides of passing trains to kill any Czechs who were clinging to the train’s undercarriage in an attempt to escape. I always wondered how any government could kill its own citizens

just because they were seeking an opportunity for a better life someplace else. It suddenly occurred to me that we, in the United States, are spoiled, and we really don’t understand the value of our freedoms. Sen. Karen Keiser (DKent) and Rep. Tina Orwall (D-Des Moines) host a telephone town hall for 33rd Legislative District residents from 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 3. At that time, constituents in the areas of Kent, SeaTac, Normandy Park, Des Moines, Burien and Renton will receive a phone call inviting them to stay on the line to participate in the town hall. In addition, residents who do not automatically receive a call may dial a toll-free participant number to listen in on the event and ask questions of their elected state officials. leaders, educators and students travel to places like Gdansk where Polish students and teachers are eager to emulate America’s free enterprise system. They remember what it was like to live without it. After World War II, Poland became part of the Warsaw Pact, and its government was dominated by the Communist Party in Moscow, which dictated production and controlled the markets. If you wanted a home or apartment, bureaucrats decided what it would look like and where it would be built. While government and party leaders had plenty to eat, nice homes, new cars and warm clothing, the rest of the people barely scraped by. A visit today to the Solidarity Museum in Gdansk is a stark reminder of the

[ BOX from page 6 ] Could it be some sort of nonsomething-something function that happens when you do-somethingsomething and that function then becomes a not-non? Or maybe it is secret agent code. It was placed in this news article for another secret agent. If the agent stands on one leg, holds the article upside down and sings the White Album backward, the code will be revealed.

There’s nothing like a good mystery. Where is Alfred Hitchcock when we need him? I wonder if God knows what a notnon is. I bet he has to ask Mikey. “Hey, Mikey. What’s a not-non? “A what?” “A not-non?” “I don’t know. Where’s the dictionary?” “I don’t know. Why can we never find a dictionary when we need it?”

students to enjoy the values of an economic system where consumers decide which goods and services thrive in the marketplace. For that, those leaders look to America. We Americans have been blessed with freedom and abundance. Even in tough economic times, we have choices and opportunities others only dream of, which is why millions of immigrants from around the globe come here. Yet, we often take it all for granted. When we gather around the dinner table on Thanksgiving, we should give thanks for what we have and pray that we never go through what the Polish people endured before they earned their freedom 23 years ago. Don Brunell is the president of the Association of Washington Business (www. awb.org).

I wonder if non-reader-facing function will show up in the Oxford English dictionary next year. I suspect the first definition would be clear – to duck-and-dodge and try your best to not say what you mean. food, clothing and housing shortages that ravaged Poland and its people. One powerful display is simply a section of empty grocery store shelves. The numbing repression and shortages led to the Solidarity movement, which began in Gdansk, home to one of the world’s largest shipyards. Many remember a short, wiry shipyard electrician named Lech Walesa, who scaled the shipyard fence and issued 21 demands to Polish Communists for better pay, better working conditions and more food. Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan fueled the fires, and in the early years, the United States secretly provided significant financial support to Solidarity. That support has not been forgotten in Poland. Today, Polish leaders want their teachers and

HOLIDAY DUI PATROLS RETURN TO KING COUNTY: Kent joins other area police departments, the King County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol in working toward zero traffic deaths by participating in the Holiday Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Store security watched the man reportedly put wireless speakers in his pants pockets and exit the store with no attempt to pay for the items, according to the police report. An officer searched the man and discovered a glass pipe. The man told police he used the pipe to smoke meth. Officers also found several credit cards with different names in the man’s possessions. He told police he finds credit cards and keeps them. Police told the man he could face possession of stolen property charges as well if it turns out the credit cards were stolen. On the way to the city jail, police and the man stopped at the Big Lots store because the man said he had stolen a duffel bag, socks and other winter items from the store that he wanted to return. He also admitted to taking clothing earlier in the week from Kmart.

Officers will be occupying extra DUI patrols throughout King County this holiday weekend. The King County Target Zero Task Force organizes and supports the enforcement effort. These and all extra patrols are part of Target Zero – striving to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in

Disturbing the peace An officer cited a man for investigation of disturbing the peace because of loud music coming from the El Pescador restaurant, 24817 Pacific Highway S., at about 7:49 p.m. Nov. 17. A caller to 911 reported the loud music, according to the police report. The caller also had reported a previous loud music compliant about the restaurant. When the officer arrived, he stood in the parking lot and heard loud music and could hear the words being sung. He went inside and brought out an employee to listen to the loud music. The employee told police the owners were planning to bring in a contractor for a price estimate to install sound proofing materials inside the restaurant.

The Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority, Kent Firefighters Local 1747 and the Kent Firefighters Foundation are once again sponsoring and supporting the Toys for Joy program. Toys for Joy is an annual event where new, unwrapped toys are collected, sorted, wrapped and delivered to the Kent and Covington Food Banks for distribution to needy families in the community. Nonperishable food and monetary donations also will be accepted. Economically, 2013 has seen improvements over previous years, but there are still many in need. Some families have to dedicate their money to the basics

in order to survive and do not have the finances to buy gifts during the holidays. Toy wrapping parties are scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 6 and 18 and are open to the public. Last year the public wrapped more than 5,500 gifts. The Toys for Joy program exists with the generous donations of local residents and businesses. Over the years, that generosity has been tremendous, said Kyle Ohashi, fire department spokesman. This year we are hoping for everyone’s continued support. The program organizers would like to issue a special thank you to USF Reddaway for their support and donation of a semi-truck to help store and transport the toys, as well as Door to Door Storage of Kent. For more information and to get involved in a wrapping party, call the Toys for Joy Hotline at 253-856-4485.

Mumaugh settles into goalie position

MILLER CAPTURES GOLD AT USA PICKLEBALL NATIONALS Kent’s Chris Miller won a gold medal in the mixed doubles (35-and-older) division at the USA Pickleball Association National Tournament at Sun City Festival in Buckeye, Ariz. Miller’s mixed doubles partner was Jennifer Lucore of Oceanside, Calif. The Nov. 11-17 nationals was the premiere sanctioned tournament hosted once a year by the USA Pickleball Association. USAPA Nationals V was the largest pickleball tournament in the history of the sport, with players from 39 states and as far away as Canada and the Netherlands. Players competed for thousands of dollars in prize money.

Danny “Mooms” Mumaugh’s new goalie helmet sports an image of the Denver, Colo., skyline as well as Seattle’s. He’s an athlete with two homes, and it shows. Despite being born and raised in the Denver suburb of Centennial, Mumaugh has spent the past three years working his way onto the Seattle Thunderbirds junior hockey team in Kent. “Coming up to see them and being with the team before I signed, I wasn’t second guessing myself,” Mumaugh said. “I knew that’s where I wanted to play and where I wanted to be.” He says that the damper weather of Seattle is a welcome change from the high and dry Colorado plateau. “It was a good transition,” he said. “Colorado is dry and Seattle is rainy and moist, I don’t mind the rain because Colorado is so dry. It’s a good change of pace.” Mumaugh started his hockey career at a young age in Centennial. When he was 6, he discovered he had a knack for ice skating and shortly after joined a midget hockey league. He played forward for half of the season, before he

He liked how goalies stood out in both their equipment and position on the rink. “You’re the only guy back there and you make the save, it’s something that always got my attention,” he said. “That’s really the big difference, I loved being goalie, no matter how old I was.” So he asked his father to try to put him in the goalie spot. “(My father) came into the car after practice with

a roster, and it had a ‘G’ by my name for goalie,” he said, “I was pretty pumped, and ever since then I never looked back.”

Making the cut When Mumaugh was 15, he attended his first practice camp with the Thunderbirds in 2010 at the ShoWare Center in Kent. While he didn’t make the initial cut, he returned next year and made the team – only to be cut again a day before their

first game. In 2012, he made the team, played his first full season, and has returned for a second go. The Thunderbirds starting goalie has shown a dramatic improvement over last year, raising his save percentage by four points despite having played fewer games. Mumaugh attributes the improvement to more time on the rink than last year, which has helped ease his first-year jitters.

He replaced goalie Justin Myles last year, after Myles suffered a neck injury, and finished out the season. It’s all about staying calm, he says, and not over-thinking your role despite the added pressure. “When you’re the goalie, the spotlight’s on you just a little bit more, more weight on your shoulders,” he said. He says getting more time on the ice has improved his goalkeeping more than practice alone. While practicing never hurts, there’s only so much it can achieve without the real stress of a game to test him and keep him sharp. “When you play you get more comfortable you get more confident, and that in turn makes you play better,” he said. “You gotta take it one save at a time.” When Mumaugh feels discouraged in his playing, he uses those setbacks as motivation. Not being drafted into the Western Hockey League was a setback for him, but it only encouraged him to prove himself when he was invited back to the Thunderbirds camp. “There are discouraging moments in anyone’s [ more GOALIE page 11 ]

The Los Angeles Temptation will play the Seattle Mist in the 2013 Pacific Cup women’s Legends Football League game at the ShoWare Center in Kent. L.A. replaced the B.C. Angels, who were dropped from the exhibition game due to the postponement of the LFL Canada season, league officials said. The Pacific Cup is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. The Kent-based Mist beat the Temptation 24-20 in the regular season on their way to winning the Pacific Division crown for the first time. Seattle lost to Chicago in the playoffs. Tickets cost $85, $55, $35, $25 and $15. For tickets, go to showarecenter.com.

remains dedicated to the sport and plans to go far, regardless of what it asks of him. “I left home as a 16-year-old to go play hockey, to play the sport that I love, and that’s the sacrifice you gotta make,” he said. “You gotta love what you do, and I think everyone here does.”

Giving thanks for what we have Time for the annual Thanksgiving column so that gardeners in Western Washington can once again be grateful for our mild climate, abundant rainfall and beautiful gardens. This year you’ll also get to be thankful for the garden chores you don’t have to do this week: Be thankful you don’t have to go outside and prune your roses. Roses can be pruned back anytime from February until March so don’t fret if you haven’t yet gotten snippy with them. While you’re thinking of roses, be thankful you don’t have to battle June bugs like they do in the South or cover your rose plants with ugly Styrofoam cones or hay piles to protect them from the snow as they do in the North. Be thankful you don’t have to mow and trim the lawn. Lawn rangers have permission to mow, trim and edge the lawn any time of the year that the ground is not frozen or so wet that it feels mucky. We have just enough cold weather to keep most lawns dormant until April so homeowners get a break from mowing – without a winter of snowing. In Chicago they just change lawn mowers for snow blowers. At least umbrellas are easier to operate. Be thankful you don’t have to

prune your fruit trees. Applies trees, plum trees and cherries all produce fruit without annual pruning. If you want to prune to shape the tree or to increase fruit production than go ahead. We have a choice about pruning in our state. In Hawaii and Florida they must hack back the explosion of plant growth all year long as the plants never go dormant. Plus in the tropics you must watch out for giant reptiles with sharp teeth and poisonous fangs. At least our slugs are easy to stomp. Be thankful we can enjoy locally grown Christmas trees and deck the halls with local boughs of holly and local swags of cedar. In warmer climates the Christmas trees sit on paved lots, dropping needles as they gasp in the heat. Fake tinsel trees stand in for our native evergreens but without the natural fragrance of pine and cedar. Communities in California pay to bring in piles of snow so local kids have a chance to wear mittens. Pity the poor Santa dressed in fur from head to foot. In our climate a fallen branch from a fir tree can be poked into an empty pot and displayed outdoors for months – needles still intact. Be thankful we have real mountains.

L.A. to play Seattle Mist in women’s football Pacific Cup at ShoWare Center

November 29, 2013 [11]

In Western Washington our dramatic snow-capped mountains make the perfect backdrop for any photo – I am so embarrassed for those poor folk in other parts of the world that call their modest green hills “mountains.” Only in Switzerland did the local mountain range earn my respect – but they can’t grow rhododendrons, Japanese maples and fuchsias in Switzerland the way we can. Be thankful if you are reading a local newspaper. Weekly newspapers and daily papers printed by local publishers have been struggling for years to adjust as the Internet took over. Finally it seems that citizens respect the credibility of the printed word when it is written by a local journalist – paid to be subjective and report on local news instead of depending on a Internet news site – often with writers paid to create publicity for attention-seeking celebrities. The world and the media is changing all around us – but this is the week to be thankful for those changes as well. Just like a garden, change challenges us to keep growing. SISSI’S 90TH

A better way to clean without water, shampoo or steam

Family and friends gathered to celebrate Sissi Longthorpe’s 90th birthday last Saturday afternoon at Golden Steer Steak ‘n Rib House. Longthorpe, who actually turns 90 on Dec. 2, is a 35-year Kent resident. Pictured with her is granddaughter, Kaitlyn Crawford. Longthorpe has been active in community work, including her longtime support of the Republican party and the boating industry, notably with the Carver Cruisers Yacht Club and Northwestern Boating Council. She operated an accounting service for 20 years. Longthorpe, who belongs to one of the oldest families from Germany, served as one of her country’s first radar officers during World War II. She met her first husband, an American soldier, during the war before coming stateside. Longthorpe eventually moved to the Northwest. She and her second husband, Paul, raised four children. They have five grandchildren. MARK KLAAS, Kent Reporter
