Santa will be busy this week reading nearly 5,000 letters written by Cougar Valley Elementary students who participated in a special campaign to raise money for charity. The letters were placed inside a large, red mailbox in the school cafeteria as part of Macy’s Believe campaign, which donates $1 per letter to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Macy’s has pledged to donate up to $1 million toward the foundation this year. On average, the foundation grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition every 38 minutes, according to the nonprofit’s website. At the end of the day on Tuesday, students had written 4,984 which means nearly $5,000 will be donated by the students of just one school. Two students alone wrote 630 letters between the both of them. Lauren Heidt and Maddy Higgs, both 8, wanted to make sure that plenty of money was raised by their school through the campaign. While they did wish for one or two things for themselves, they mostly just wanted to write for a good cause. “I just wanted to make kids’ wishes come true,” said Higgs. “This is the best day ever.” Both second-grade students said they also realized they are different than MakeSEE SANTA LETTERS, A13

The Bremerton Board of Education’s newest director was sworn in Dec. 12 during the last board meeting for the year. District four director Alyson Rotter repeated her oath as read by Dr. Aaron Leavell,superintendent. Director Carolynn Perkins was also sworn into her number five position by Leavell. Both Rotter and Perkins’ terms expire in 2017. Perkins, who served as board president, also turned over her gavel. Following the turn over, the board reorganized the board of directors during a nomination process to select a new president, vice president and auditor. Director Scott Rahm was selected to serve as the president, and director David Rubie was selected as vice-president. Both will serve one-year terms, according to district policy. Ken Watkins, will serve as the board auditor. “It’s been a wonderful start to the school year,” said Rahm. “I may have to be the voice for all of us at times, but it feels good that I’m surrounded by a good group of people here.” Perkins added that she believes Rahm will do a fine job in his new position. “He’s been one that has asked questions — always really good questions — and is very knowledgable,” she said. “I know he’ll do a wonderful job.” Rahm said he’s looking forward to teamwork. “My goal is to keep the teamwork going,” he said. “To really support the hard work that everyone does and really just govern the operations and not manage.” Rotter spoke of her excitement at the end of the public meeting. “I’m glad that it’s finally here. It’s a long process,” she said of campaigning. “It’s a nice way to end the year. The Silverdale Sounder Sams, a local chapter of the Good Sam RV Club, presented a $500 check on Dec. 16 to the Central Kitsap Food Bank. Throughout the year, club members host an annual garage sale, collect aluminum cans and hold monthly raffles

to raise funds to donate to the local food bank. The club gives $500 at Thanksgiving and $500 at Christmas. The local chapter currently has 35 members. Together they travel all over the state of Washington and elsewhere throughout the country vaca-

Transit off on holidays Kitsap Transit will not operate service on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. That means that Kitsap Transit’s routed and ACCESS buses and the Kitsap Transit Foot Ferry won’t be running at all. Kitsap Transit’s Customer Service Office, the information phone lines, administrative office and the ORCA call center will also be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Reservation lines will be open on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 for next-day reservations.

Because bus service is not operating, parking fees will not be collected at the Annapolis parking lot Dec. 25 or Jan. 1. PSNS Worker/Driver buses and the #19 Crossroad Shuttle bus will also not operate during the holiday shipyard closure, Dec. 25 through Jan. 1. A holiday reminder This week, I sat in traffic for almost two hours in what is normally about a 25-minute commute from my home on Bainbridge Island to my office in Silverdale. It was Monday morning and I sincerely thought about turning around, going home and going back to bed. But the reporter in me said I needed to see what was ahead. I heard sirens before I ever left home and my husband looked on the Bainbridge Fire District website, so I knew there had been an accident somewhere near the Agate Pass Bridge. The website said it could be an hour before the accident scene was cleared. I headed out anyway. I easily got out on the highway because there was no traffic heading south and a nice driver let me in to head north. I sat about 200 feet from my driveway for 30 minutes and then creeped along for another 45 minutes until I got to the bridge. It was soon obvious that it was a very serious accident. It had been a head-on just on the north side of the bridge. Later in the day, I learned through a Washington State Patrol news release that the accident is suspected to involve drugs or alcohol. It was just another reminder of how vigilant we all have to be at this time of year. According to state data, 49 people have been killed in Washington in the past four years between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, due to impaired driving. The WSP and other law enforcement agencies are adding extra DUI patrols during this time as a way to try to decrease the number of impaired drivers on the road and the number of accidents. Kitsap County law enforcement agencies are participating in that. Too, many tow companies and taxi drivers are offering their services free of charge to get intoxicated drivers home without incident, during the holiday time when office parties and other gatherings can mean overindulgence in alcohol. We each bear a responsibility to not drink and drive. We also bear the responsibility to stop anyone else who may be over the limit. Don’t worry about being seen as the “teetotaler do-gooder” or the “mother” in the group. If your friend or coworker shouldn’t be behind the wheel, then stop them. Take their keys. Stand in front of the door. Do whatever it takes. And remember, it can happen anywhere, anytime. Just because its 8 a.m. on Monday morning doesn’t mean someone who shouldn’t be drinking, isn’t out on the road. Driving is a responsibility, not a privilege. During the holidays, we mourn with those who have lost loved ones to drunk drivers. And we pledge to do all we can to keep it from happening to others.

Really in the dog house this time I have been a pet owner most of my life. Growing up, we lived in a rural, small farm type environment. We had all types of animals at various times which included everything from chickens and ducks to the larger variety such as horses and cows. The Christmas before I turned 6, Santa brought me a pony on Christmas Eve. Yes, one of my Dad’s fellow firefighter friends dressed up in the full Santa regalia and brought my gift — a small Shetland pony named Dolly — up the front driveway of my house on the night before Christmas. In real life, I actually got to live out the number one dream of every little girl in America. Many would say I was spoiled, and I guess I was in a way. I did not come from a family with money. There were years where things were very tight, but I was rich in the way of life we lived. It allowed opportunities like having a pony as a little girl. Now days, the number of animals in my world have been significantly reduced down to two fish who are Cosmo and Wanda and a dog named Baer. About four years ago, we rescued Baer from a situation where his real owner had to leave him with friends and they simply did not have the space or time for him.

Colleen Smidt We made space and Baer became a part of our family. Baer is a chewer when he gets bored. So that means at night he has a 4-foot by 6-foot chain-link kennel in the basement that he has to sleep in so that I don’t wake up to a world of shredded socks, blankets and chewed up pieces of furniture every morning. He also loves to work very hard until he slips off the nice nylon collars I purchase for him and chews them up. The chewing does not stop at the nylon and moves on to the plastic clips and whatever ID tag attached until it is all unrecognizable. This past week, Baer decided to launch an escape attempt from

his downstairs kennel. He managed to work some of the links apart and create a hole to worm his way through. As he wormed, the temporary metal chain collar we had on him wrapped itself around the pedal of Nick’s bike that was parked next to the kennel. When the bike tipped over, it scared him and he twisted and drug it partially across the basement. Hearing all this noise I went down to investigate. It was around 10 p.m. and all I had on my agenda was heading for bed after a very long day. The chain had twisted enough that, in order to keep it from very quickly choking Baer, both my son, Nick, and I had to hold the bike in an odd elevated position. My husband, Jason, raided most of the tools in his shop but none of the cutters we had were strong enough to cut through that thickness of chain. Compounding the situation was the fact that Nick and I could not put the bike down on the ground so that enough leverage could be gained for the use of wrenches or sockets to dismantle the pedal on the bike and slip free the chain. Helping older parents stay happy and healthy If you’re fortunate enough to have one or both parents still living, you may have noticed a role reversal taking place in your relationship. Remember the days when mom shuttled you to the doctor whenever you were sick? Now, it may be you who’s driving her to her medical appointments. Perhaps you’ve become even more involved in managing her healthcare needs, serving as her healthcare proxy, moving her into your home to care for her, or even having to select a long-term care facility for her to live in. Whatever the case, it’s natural to feel challenged — and, yes, intimidated — in the role you’ve undertaken.

But if you stay positive and proactive, you’ll be in a great position to advocate for your parents’ optimal care. The Bremerton City Council is standing by its decision to defund Visit Kitsap Peninsula next year. At least for now. On Dec. 4, the city council voted 5-4 to remove $20,000 worth of lodging tax funding in the city’s 2014 budget to Visit Kitsap Peninsula, a local nonprofit that promotes tourism in Kitsap County. During a study session last week, the council revisited that decision, but Council President Greg Wheeler

ultimately decided that it will be something that can be taken up by next year’s resized and revamped council. The move to withhold VKP funding originated with councilwoman Leslie Daugs, who was recently tapped by county Democrats to replace outgoing county commissioner Josh Brown. Daugs said that VKP’s website and promotional literature is often filled with typos, incorrect information and doesn’t do a good enough job promoting Bremerton. The Kitsap County Board

of Commissioners, meanwhile, have taken a completely different tack. Last week, they voted to award VKP, the county’s tourism agency, a two-year contract for region-wide tourism marketing services. “When so many initiatives are happening in our community to develop the tourism economy, now is the time to provide stability in funding for marketing our region and communities,” said Commissioner Rob Gelder. “It’s not a time to retract, but to charge forward with a plan of attack to increase our share of the

tourism market.” According to Eric Baker, a special projects manager for the commissioners’ office, the county wants to ensure continuity on several projects including a recently approved National Park Service grant for the Kitsap Peninsula Water Trails Management Program. The project is scheduled to start sometime next year and involves partnerships with multiple jurisdictions and counties. VKP co-partnered with Kitsap County on the grant and will work with county staff to coordinate meetings with the Kitsap Peninsula Water Trails Alliance, regional stakeholders and the National Park Service.

Mr. and Mrs. Claus are making their rounds BY SERAINE PAGE SPAGE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Here in Kitsap County, Santa comes around long before Dec. 25 every year. In fact, he and his partnerin-crime, Mrs. Claus, have been making early appearances in the area for the past 25 years. The pair, also known as Dave and Dee Riley, are the ones who book up the Clauses’ day planner as early as September. “Word gets out,” said Dave Riley. “This year I thought we were going to do six (appearances).” As of mid-December, the couple is scheduled to appear at 16 different locations. It could be because Mr. Riley is a dead-ringer for Santa Claus with his clear blue eyes, naturally rosy red cheeks and thick white beard. His belly, which Mrs. Claus claims “is all him” also adds to his believable appearance. Or, it could be because the duo show up for free to anyone who asks.

“Candy canes … that’s all they need to pay us,” Dee Riley said. The candy canes go to the children who sit on Santa’s lap. In exchange, sometimes Santa will get a hug, a cookie or even a letter. The red sack that he carries around with him is full of drawings and letters from kids. Depending on the year, gift requests vary from iPods to Barbies to Batman toys. The couple — who have been married for 45 years — put on quite the show for those who come to see them. “Give and take,” Dave Riley said of having a good marriage. “We get mad once in a while. (We) take a couple hours and we get back at it.” It may also help that the couple has married three times through vow renewals, Dave Riley joked. Young and old, the Clauses live for entertaining their crowds. In between acts, they’ll go out to dinner in a restaurant in full garb. The attention they garner is from people of all

In all his years of playing the role of Saint Nick, Riley has only met one other acting Santa, and it was on somebody’s lawn. When comparing his act to others, Riley supposes there’s only a few things that set him apart: “Well, I got a

real beard,” he said. “I think I’m jollier than most.” There’s always a candy cane for the young ones who come up to greet him, Mr. Riley said. Even if he’s just wearing a red Santa cap and street clothes, children will come barreling up to him howling, “Santa!”

when they see him. For those who must know, Santa’s favorite cookies are peanut butter ones. “You want to be Christmas-y and you want to make people happy,” said Mrs. Riley. “We both love to dress up.” They’ve got the Mr. and Mrs. Claus piece down pat with authentic outfits and other physical attributes. Their act, however, is what really makes the little ones believe. If Mr. Claus forgets a child’s name, Mrs. Claus will lean down and whisper it in his ear. Sometimes kids who are too scared to sit on Santa’s lap will sit on his counterpart’s lap instead. In every action, they showcase teamwork they’ve learned over the years. “You make it a jolly thing,” said Dee Riley. “We figure we’re doing some good somewhere.” Many of their events are for nonprofit organizations, such as Martha & Mary, Holly Ridge Center and senior centers. Their favorite people to perform for are those with special

needs, Mr. Claus said. The pair has visited Martha & Mary for at least the last five years, said Renee Eicher, center director. “They were very, very good,” she said. “Infants and toddlers are always a bit challenging because they don’t like costumes and whatnot.” But that never fazes the Rileys. They sit and wait for the little one to make the decision. This year, Eicher watched as one little girl contemplated whether or not she wanted to sit on Santa’s lap. Her grandmother said she wouldn’t since she was frightened by him last year. Much to the surprise of those around, the little girl was thrilled when it was her turn. “She flew up on his lap and just gave him a huge hug around his neck. She was just so cute,” said Eicher. “I think it’s all just part of the magic of Christmas.”

On Tuesday morning, students from Mountain View Middle School gathered around the edges of the pool of the Bremerton YMCA. They weren’t getting ready to swim, but rather test motorized projects known as ROVs — remote operating vehicles. “I didn’t know anything about soldering or cutting wire, but after this project I know how to do all that stuff,” said Divinity Dodge, an eighth-grade-student. Around 50 students took their ROVs to the waters for testing. The students are part of Bobbie Busch’s advanced class which uses Project Lead the Way (PLTW) as part of the school’s STEM curriculum focused on science and mathematics. Since October, the eighth graders have been working on their model ROVs to get their projects just right. Tuesday was the first time they could test their design to see if it would work properly, Busch said. “They have had to learn to

solder, cut PVC pipe, follow wiring diagrams for switches and get their boats to neutral buoyancy,” Busch said. The students were required to design their own models as well. Corinne Beach, an engineer at PSNS, provided support during the project to guide students and help with troubleshooting. Beach also brought Navy divers with her to assist the students if their models got tangled or stuck in the pool. “This is an effort to get students interested in math and science,” she said. “You see the lightbulbs go on. That’s our biggest reward. For all of us here and the excitement for what they’re doing.” Beach said the work the students are doing easily translates into real-life careers, which makes what they’re doing much more relevant. Navigating the ROVs in the water is similar to the machines marine biologists use during research, she said. It is also frequently used by divers to recover equipment and other miscellaneous items underwa-

ter. For the pool exercise, students were required to make sure the model— made mostly of PVC piping and wiringcould rove along the bottom of the pool. The pool was set up to mimic the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and students were requested to pick up items from the bottom of the pool. PVC piping designed as an “oil rig” had openings that needed to be capped by the ROVs. If the ROV failed at a task on the checklist, student groups were required to go back to the drawing board and troubleshoot. For some groups that included adjusting pieces on the ROV at makeshift labs set up with soldering irons and other pieces. A few parents sat on the sidelines watching their students operating their machines. “It’s really a neat opportunity to have the Navy involved in some capacity here,” said James Lassiter, a parent. Charges against doctor dropped Silverdale pediatrician Saad K. Al-Agba has been cleared of charges made earlier this year by the mother of a 7-year-old patient. The patient’s mother, who was never identified, filed a complaint against Al-Agba last February with the Washington Department of Health citing unprofessional conduct and sexual misconduct. she was at his office with her daughter. She also said Al-Agba had made an unexpected visit to her residence during which he touched her inappropriately. She said the events happened in February and March 2012. Testimony in the matter was heard in October and a ruling was made public this week by Mark Triplett, presiding officer and health law judge for the state. In the decision, Triplett wrote that “the testimony of the respondent (Al-Agba) is credible and supported by the totality of the evidence presented in this matter.” He also wrote, “based on the totality of the evidence, the presiding officer finds the complainant’s testimony to be less credible.” All charges were dismissed in an order from the department of health dated Nov. 8. The matter was not appealed by the complainant and is now considered closed. Dr. Al-Agba said recently that he was pleased with the ruling and that, as he said all along, he was “innocent of the charges.” “I knew that this never happened,” Al-Agba said. “And through listening to the testimony, that was proven.” Al-Agba said he became aware recently that the woman who filed the complaint against

him has done similar things previously with other medical professionals. “It’s clear that this is a pattern with her,” he said. The ruling stated that the department of health, which filed the complaint on behalf of the woman, failed to prove either charge with “clear and convincing evidence.” Al-Agba has continued to practice in Silverdale where he has a pediatrics practice with his daughter. “I also plan to work to change the (health department complaint) system so that something like this doesn’t happen to anyone again,” he said. He said the way the complaint system works, the State Health Department represents the complainant and that the final ruling is also made by a judge that is an employee of the health department. He hopes to work with lawmakers to devise a new system for handling complaints against medical professionals. Al-Agba has practiced medicine in Kitsap County for 43 years, including 17 years with The Doctors Clinic. He opened his own practice in 1986. Al-Agba said throughout the ordeal, his patients remained supportive and that the claim did little damage to his practice.

Woman busted for drugs at DOC office

15, the court amended the conditions of release and required bail or bond in the amount of $50,000. Shortly thereafter, Richins posted bond or bail and was released from custody. Richins’ case proceeded to jury trial Oct. 21. Judge Jeanette Dalton, presiding at trial, ordered her to be present when a verdict was reached. The jury reached a verdict Oct. 24. Richins, though, did not appear that day and Judge Dalton found her absence to be voluntary.

Sandra Lee Johnston, 46, a transient, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance following her Dec. 11 arrest for drug possession at the Department of Corrections office on Kitsap Way. According to a police report, Johnston was checking in at the office as required when her Community Corrections Officer found her purse and found one small round purple tablet and three smaller round orange tablets. The officer, using the website drugs.com, determined that all of the pills are schedule II narcotics. “Johnston advised that the purse was hers, but she had no idea whose pills they were,” a police report states. “She said that they were definitely not hers.” Johnston was then arrested.

The woman said that Lansing is an acquaintance of her roommate and had stolen items from the home on earlier occasions. Lansing was charged Oct. 8 with trafficking in stolen property in the second degree. In the second case, a woman

Bremerton resident Christopher James Lansing, 25, of 2449 Rocky Point Road, has had some bad luck at pawn shops lately. He was charged in October for trafficking in stolen property in the second degree and picked up a trafficking stolen property in the first degree charge this month after trying to pawn stolen goods. In the first case, which took place in late September, a Bremerton woman whose $500 bicycle was stolen from her back porch in the 2800 block of 19th Street, discovered it at a Pawn Pros the next day. The officer who took the original report responded to the store and found the bike had been pawned by Christopher James Lansing, 25, of 2449 Rocky Point Road for $50.

Bremerton resident Rebecca Louise Richins, 33, of the 300 block of Lafayette Avenue, has been charged with bail jumping. Richins, who is also known as Rebecca Presler, was arraigned June 17 in Kitsap County Superior Court on one count of possession of a methamphetamine, a Class C felony. On Oct.

A portion of the road that John “Bud” Hawk once drove to and from his beloved Brownsville Elementary School now bears a memorial sign dedicated to him. Hawk, a lifelong Kitsap County resident and Army veteran — known for being awarded the Medal of Honor — passed away on Nov. 4 at 89 years old. Last Thursday morning, a small group gathered to honor the former educator and WWII veteran outside the school he loved. After Hawk’s son, Mark Hawk, took down the cardboard to reveal the newly bolted sign, a small group of ASB (Associated Student Body) members and staff gathered to hear Hawk’s daughter say a few words. “Dad would’ve been very appreciative,” said Marilyn Harrelson. “He spent many hours on these roads.” Harrelson presented current Brownsville Elementary Principal Toby Tebo with the proclamation of the road dedication to hang in the school, framed with some photos of Hawk teaching inside the school years ago. A small committee has been formed, and the renaming of the school is in its early stages, according to district staff. “It would have meant a lot to him,” Harrelson said of the sign for her dad. “He said the thing he’s always been most proud of is to be an educator.” Student Chloe Ashcraft, 12, said the placement of the sign is appropriate in front of the school that Hawk gave so much to over the years. “I know that a lot of kids that met him were inspired to be a teacher like him. He was their inspiration,” she said. “It shows that the community actually cared about him. He was someone people really loved and adored. It really touched me. I think I might not get over this for a while. It was really, really incredible,” she said. In June 1943, Hawk joined the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry. For his heroic actions on Aug. 20, 1944, around Chambois, France, Hawk earned the Medal of Honor.

Young is top choice to replace Angel BY DANNIE OLIVEAUX PORT ORCHARD INDEPENDENT EDITOR

It took Republican precinct committee officers (PCOs) from the 26th District about three hours on Dec. 4 to select the top three candidates to replace Jan Angel in the state House of Representatives. They came up with either a technology consultant, filmmaker or attorney — all from Gig Harbor — to become her replacement. After casting ballots seven times, the PCOs came up with Jesse Young, Adam Berman and Doug

Cloud, who finished first, second and third, respectively. The meeting was held at the Givens Community Center in Port Orchard. The candidates will face the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners and Pierce County Council, who will select the person to fill Angel’s vacancy at a joint meeting. A date has not yet been scheduled. Angel, the 26th District state representative, defeated Sen. Nathan Schlicher for the district’s state senate seat in November. Before the meeting, fliers from

the Republican Liberty Caucus in the 26th Legislative District (and signed by Tony Stephens), were distributed that listed Berman as its top choice followed by Young, Cloud and Spencer Hutchins. Stephens was elected as chair over the night’s proceedings. But despite the fliers, the PCOs chose Young as their top selection. It took the PCOs four ballots to pick Young as the top choice. On the first three ballots, none of the candidates got a majority of the 51 votes cast. Young was the top

vote-getter on each of the first three ballots with 22 votes. He locked up the group’s top choice with 27 votes on the fourth ballot. Young, a Gig Harbor resident, ran twice for Congress and works as a technology consultant. “It’s humbling, especially after the process we went through, but it’s encouraging just to know enough people think you can make a difference and be a positive influence,” Young said after the meeting. “If I am appointed, then I will be effective on what I advocated to the group here tonight.” Young said he can bring some business experience to the House on behalf of the district.

“If you look at what Olympia has, it does have a lot of my skill-set representatives,” he said. “If you look at the 26th District located between Tacoma and Seattle and there is an opportunity to court a lot of high-tech jobs that are well paying that can fit this community.” Young said his experience can help him “walk across the aisle” and help benefit the district. Adam Berman, a filmmaker from Gig Harbor, needed just one ballot to become the second choice. His closest competiton was Spencer Hutchins and South Kitsap Fire and Rescue Batallion Chief Doug Richards with nine votes each. Richards had 20 votes, Cloud

got 14 and Hutchins had 13 on the first vote for the third choice. Hutchins withdrew his name, and Cloud, a Gig Harbor attorney, became the group’s third pick with 25 votes to Richard’s 24 on the final ballot. Duane Hatch, who was also vying for consideration to fill Angel’s post, received the least votes of the six candidates during the night. Kitsap County Republican Party Chair Chris Tibbs said the party is thrilled to have participated in the selection process and hopes for a successful and victorious new year. “We have three solid candidates,” said Tibbs.

Police find stash of stolen mail Bremerton police are sorting through an estimated 500 pieces of mail discovered Sunday in a wooded area off Lake Flora Road. They estimate that there are as many as 100 or more potential victims in the case. Most of the mail came from addresses in Mason and Pierce counties, but some was also from Kitsap County. Sergeant Kevin Crane said that a property owner was notified about the large piles of mail by some brush pickers.

Crane also said he has never seen a stolen mail case of this magnitude. “We have stolen mail occasionally here and there, but have never had it to this extent,” Crane said. Investigators continue to sort through all of the mail and identify victims. They estimate there may be nearly 100 victims who may not even realize they have had mail stolen. In amongst the stacks of mail are checks, gift cards, medical information, financial informa-

tion, bills, photographs, packages and holiday cards. Investigators will be processing the recovered items in hopes of identifying persons responsible. They will also be working with the US Postal Inspectors and attempt to notify the numerous victims in this case. Bremerton Police caution people to watch their mail carefully and to use the post office for outgoing mail rather than placing outgoing mail in rural mail boxes.

news. It used to be that if Isaac Tate hit his head, it could spark an epileptic seizure. But it happened recently while playing and … nothing. That’s great news for a 10-year-old boy who last December suffered 96 seizures in one day. In fact, he’s been seizure-free for eight months now. A medication that had a 1 percent chance of being effective is working. And Isaac doesn’t have to have surgery. “His seizures are in remission,” his mom, Chelsea Tate, said Dec. 17. “He’s able to play on the playground again.”

Melissa Holmes, a family friend, said the emotional support from the community means a lot to the Gunnells. “Cancer is long and hard — and the hard doesn’t go away,” she said. Incidentally, the community raised $120,000 in five and a half months for Ian’s fund. The Gunnells are looking forward to being home “and trying to figure out what the ‘new normal’ means,” Tanya said. “We
