When Faye LaFond began the process of registering for classes for this year, the Redmond High School (RHS) senior did not have any occupational credits, a graduation requirement for the Lake Washington School District (LWSD). As she worked out her schedule, the only class that would fit and fulfill the requirement was Microsoft IT Academy (ITA), which teaches students how to use Microsoft Office on a more comprehensive level. The class also allows students to become Microsoft Office Specialist certified in three programs: Word, PowerPoint and Excel, with the options of becoming certified in Outlook and OneNote. “It’s been so worth it,” said LaFond about what she has learned so far, pointing out that she was not initially motivated when she first signed up for the class.

The program is available to every public high school in the state for free, with OSPI contributing $2 million per year and Microsoft paying for the rest — $20-30 million, according to OSPI communication manager Nathan Olson. “It’s a great, great deal,” he said. Loeber added, “Microsoft is proud to be partnering with OSPI and the state of Washington to offer needed technology skills to students.” ITA is available in more than 15,000 schools in 130 different countries throughout the world. Olson said the program was first offered in Washington schools during the 2011-12 school year and allows students to study and become certified for free. He said prior to ITA coming to the state, in addition to having to pay, testing was only available in certain areas. Now, however, testing can be made available wherever there is a

huge victory for us over a long period of time.” The local chapter held a film screening recently at the Redmond Library; present at the event was Sanjay Verma, a survivor of the Union Carbide disaster. Bhattacharjee said that AID has had a notable impact on India over the years. “Through all of our projects we’ve easily reached 10 million or more people,” he said, “but more than that, what we have been able to do is connect different groups in India.” In 2009, organic farming was a relatively new concept in India. There were only 25 organic farmers in the whole country. Because AID was able to connect farmers to organic farmers who could share their knowledge, organic farming has become a movement with almost 6,000 farmers and counting. “Being able to connect all these people has an amplification effect on every
movement,” Bhattacharjee said. Aside from project coordination, AID Seattle organizes fundraisers and gathers donations to support different NGOs in India. “Our biggest donors come from Microsoft and they match us dollar to dollar,” Gorty said. “We also do events; for example we’ll invite a big-name artist from India to come perform.” The Seattle chapter typically has 10 to 15 volunteers at a time. All of them come from India. They meet every Friday in a building on the Microsoft campus to discuss projects and plan upcoming events. “Seattle has a very active chapter of AID with some very hard-working volunteers who have been involved in supporting some of our best projects and campaigns,” Kuchimanchi said. Many of the volunteers travel to India themselves to

help with projects, and AID has an internship program that sends people to India to volunteer for about three months. Gorty and Bhattacharjee agree that AID has changed them in ways they could never have imagined. “I came from a middleclass family and grew up in the top 20 or 30 percent of the people, so I never saw any of the things I see now through AID,” Gorty said. “I think that I should make time to do something, no matter what it is, to give back to India.” “I think it’s first and foremost a change in perspective,” Bhattacharjee said. “It has opened up a whole new world and it’s made me more humble, it’s made me value things a lot more than maybe I used to when I was growing up, and it has led to a change in the way we live our lives.”
Gorty said that some of the people who were involved with AID from the beginning have moved back to India to do full-time social work. “We call them ‘jeevansathi,’ which means ‘life-long partner,’” she said. “Meeting so many mindboggling grassroots activists who pretty much could have gone anywhere but decided to be on the ground working in these remote places — that’s inspiring, that just eggs you on,” Bhattacharjee said. The image most Americans associate with India includes shining palaces and developing cities, according to Sunitha Gorty of Redmond. But this only represents the top 10 or 20 percent of the country. “Seventy percent of India is still dependent on agriculture,” said Gorty, who is chapter coordinator for the Association for India’s Development (AID) in Seattle. “For India to prosper, we can’t just focus on the top percent.” That’s why Gorty and her husband got involved with the organization in 1999, when they started donating to AID’s first chapter, located in College Park, Md. Ravi Kuchimanchi founded the organization in 1991, when he was a graduate student at the University of Maryland. He wanted to create a channel for East Indians living in the U.S. to connect to rural India. “The goal was to create awareness in the U.S. and inspire volunteerism so interested people can join it, learn and work together to understand and address issues of inequity, social justice and sustainable development (in India),” Kuchimanchi said. The organization has now expanded to 38 chapters in the U.S., with more located internationally. Each
chapter organizes fundraisers and supports nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that are working on projects in India. Gorty said AID is involved in efforts that address multiple issues. “We don’t focus just on education, or just on agriculture,” Gorty said. “The idea is that you need to address all the issues.” One issue that AID has focused on over the years concerns the world’s worst industrial disaster, in Bhopal, India. A gas leak at a pesticide production plant in 1984 killed thousands, and many are still drinking water that was contaminated by the gas. Nirveek Bhattacharjee, AID volunteer and board member, has been particularly involved in this issue over the years. He said there’s been little to no cleanup after the gas leak, even after all this time. “The cleanup is still very much necessary and a work in progress,” Bhattacharjee said. However, AID has been taking steps to inform people about the issues at hand, and in some ways has been successful. “We’ve had U.S. congressmen and senators write letters urging the government of India to act in at least providing clean water,” Bhattacharjee said. “Now about 60 percent of families do receive it, so that was a

Keep the holiday spirit all year long DON BRUNELL
During the holidays, our thoughts naturally turn to giving — not just giving gifts but donating our time and money to charities and community programs. This time of year, we’re reminded that, with all our frailties, we human beings are a pretty generous lot. According to the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, 88 percent of American households donate to charity. In 2012, Americans donated more than $316 billion to nonprofit organizations. As it turns out, philanthropy is as old as civilization itself. One of the earliest recorded donations was in 375 B.C. when Plato willed his house to his nephew with instructions that the proceeds be used to support students and faculty at the academy he founded. In America, the controversial and hard-charging industry titans who came to power in the 19th century began a tradition of philanthropy that created some of
our nation’s most prestigious institutions. For example, steel magnate Andrew Carnegie built 2,800 free public libraries around the world, and many of America’s greatest universities and art institutions were founded by industrialists: Carnegie-Mellon University, Duke University, the University of Chicago, Rockefeller University, Stanford University, the Getty Museum, the Guggenheim and the Smithsonian. These industrialists created charitable foundations that continue to this day. In all, U.S. foundations and corporations donated almost $64 billion to charitable causes in 2012. While banks are a target of much criticism today, it is important to point out that in 2012 JPMorgan Chase and its Foundation gave more than $190 million to thousands of nonprofit organizations across 42 states, the District of Columbia, and 37 countries around the world. More than 43,000 employees provided 468,000 hours of volunteer service in local communities around the globe.
GUEST COLUMN
8. Man found dead in mini-van near Redmond Ridge — March 19: A 60-year-old man who was found dead in a mini-van near Redmond Ridge was identified as Irvin Giesler, according to Sgt. Cindi West, King County Sheriff’s Office public information officer. 9. Wildlife crossing on Redmond Ridge nearing completion — Sept. 19: The 40-foot-wide crossing is an elevated bridge stretching 120 feet across Northeast Novelty Hill Road between Redmond Ridge Drive Northeast and 234th Place Northeast. There will also be 1,000 feet of fence on each side of the road — stretching 500 feet in each direction from the bridge — to lead the animals toward the bridge in order to cross the road. The vegetation that will be planted along the bridge will help create a barrier between the animals and vehicles as well as a seamless, natural transition from one side of the road to the other. 10. Former Microsoft senior program manager charged with rape — Aug. 6: A 36-year-old former Microsoft senior program manager was charged with second-degree rape on July 31. The alleged crime took place at about 11 p.m. on July 22 in defendant Vineet Kumar Srivastava’s office in Building 27. An omnibus hearing has been set for Jan. 31, 2014 for Srivastava, who was arraigned on Aug. 14 and entered a not-guilty plea to the charges. One of today’s best-known foundations is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Founded with earnings from Microsoft — and generously supported by business mogul Warren Buffet — the foundation’s $38 billion endowment applies business principles and discipline to nonprofit initiatives here and around the globe in health care, economic development and education. Regionally, the Fred Meyer Fund has awarded more than $15 million in grants since 1997 in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington to help fight hunger, educate our children and help our military veterans. Sterling Bank in Spokane provides each of its employees with 12 hours of paid time off a year to use volunteering in their local community. In 2012, Sterling employees donated 53,000 hours of time to nearly 2,000 nonprofit organizations. These volunteers deserve our thanks and support. Their efforts are a reminder that all of us, regardless of income or status, can contribute to our communities in some way — and, in doing so, we make ourselves and our communities better.

computer with access to the online test, so things are also more convenient. In addition, Loeber said all Washington public libraries have access to ITA. CCI Learning is the company that sells, manages and supports all of the pieces for ITA. This includes the subscriptions for the memberships, official exams for Microsoft Office Specialist — the certification offered at RHS — as well as Microsoft Technology Associate, Microsoft Certified Educator and Microsoft Certified Professional.
IMPROVING MARKETABILITY
Malcolm Knox, CEO for CCI, said before ITA, certifications were usually offered through colleges or commercial companies. But with Washington recognizing the importance of having these skills at an earlier age, now high school-aged students can become more proficient, efficient and faster in their work. “It’s a fantastic program,” Knox said about ITA. He said students will also be more competitive on the resume stack if they are certified. Knox said on Dec. 19, there were 613 jobs in Redmond that required Microsoft skills. Loeber said ITA provides students a way of learning skills required in

Samantha Pak, Redmond Reporter the job market of today and tomorrow, and the ability to get certified further provides employers with proof of skills acquired. “According to Pew Research Center, 46 percent of young adults ages 18-24 are currently unemployed and of those that are employed, less than half say they have the education and training necessary to get ahead in their job or career,” Loeber said. “At the same time, 25 percent of IT jobs go unfilled due to lack of training or experience.” Loeber’s latter figure is based on the IDC study, Climate Change: Cloud’s Impact on IT Organizations and Staffing. “The need for technology skills has never been greater,” he said. “The partnership between Microsoft and OSPI gives students the opportunity to learn valuable skills that will enhance their marketability in the global job
market.” LaFond also sees the advantage of being Microsoft Office Specialist certified when it comes to the job market. She said, in reality, there are few professions out there that do not require some sort of computer skills.
A GROWING PROGRAM
Since the program started, Olson said they went from about 4,000 certifications issued in the first school year to already 3,719 certifications so far this school year — up from 2,732 certifications during the last school year at this time. Olson said this is the number of certifications, not students, as they are able to become certified in multiple programs. He added that RHS is toward the top of the list in certifications for this year. “They have the third most certifications in the state,” Olson said.

ITA has been at RHS since it came to Washington and is taught by Grace Brady. She said the class is offered to all grade levels, and just as the program at the state level has been growing, it has been growing at the school, as well. When it was offered the first year, there was only one section offered. Now, RHS offers two ITA sessions with 28 students in each class. Brady said the class is quite intense and more difficult than students — some of whom have parents who work at Microsoft — assume. “They are learning so much,” Brady said. Knox praised Brady for the interest she takes in her students. “She’s a superstar,” he said. “She is up there as a teacher who has taught for a long time…and she is very passionate…(she) really, really cares about the students.” RHS freshman Anandan Lakshmi Narayahan agreed, saying his skills in the different Microsoft programs have improved since he has been in the class and credits Brady for his success. LaFond said her skills have improved, as well. She said has become more confident in her abilities and what she is learning has become applicable as she has worked on assignments for other classes. “It’s been super useful,” she said. “I’m glad that I was forced to take it.”

RFD is part of King County’s Medic One program and serves all of northeast King County. Last week, the Medic One Foundation — which funds paramedic training for all Medic One providers in King County, as well as many communities throughout the Puget Sound region — held a community event to raise money and awareness for its work at King County Fire District 34 in Redmond. The event featured CPR and resuscitation demonstrations. McClure attended the event along with Becky Cole, a Woodinville resident who collapsed and had a seizure when she was nine months pregnant three years ago. Cole had lost consciousness and stopped breathing. Her husband called 911 and performed CPR until Medic One paramedics arrived and were able to stabilize her. Mike Hilley, an RFD firefighter, said the City of Redmond offers CPR training to citizens through the Redmond Ready program and the

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Redmond Police Department at 8701 160th Ave. N.E. The cost is $25 and people can register online at www2. redmond.gov/econnect, using course 49198. After her near-death experience, McClure is now a firm believer in being prepared, becoming trained in CPR and knows the importance of knowing what to do. “You can really make a huge difference,” she said, “which affects not just one person, but everyone that cares about them.”

Some students dressed up in Santa hats and reindeer antlers. “Helping out gives us the chance to make a wonderful holiday for people who might not get anything,” said 10th-grader Pamela Herring. FCF began in 1976 when a boy named Craig wrote a letter to Santa Claus asking for a gift, not for himself, but for his sister, who did not get anything for Christmas
the previous year. The letter ended up touching the hearts of many people and FCF was born. The organization is a volunteer-only nonprofit organization, which provides a memorable Christmas to more than 80,000 youngsters and their families. Foster kids in King County felt the warmth of the holiday season when residents of Fairwinds Redmond retirement community recently donated nearly 2,000 pairs of pajamas to the Treehouse Wearhouse. The store serves all of the foster kids in King County by providing them access to shop for free essentials such as clothing, school supplies, books, toys and more. In a collaborative effort with other One Eighty/ Leisure Care retirement communities, 1,907 pairs of pajamas were delivered and sorted by seniors and Treehouse staff for kids and families to shop the next day. With the holiday season here, the security and warmth of a simple pair of pajamas can make a significant impact on foster kids who don’t know where they will be next. In its 10th year, the Pajama Party has collected more than 10,500 pajamas.

REDMOND SPORTS
Hurdler Porter invited to Down Under Sports games Courtney Porter launched her gymnastics and dancing careers when she was 3 years old. Take those two sports, add in some running and natural talent and a stellar high school hurdler has emerged on the track scene. As a freshman last May, the 15-year-old Redmond resident and Bellevue Christian School student took first in league and districts in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles and placed second at the 1A state championships in both events. At Eastern Washington University in Cheney, she notched times of 15.64 seconds and 45.92 seconds, respectively, in the 100 and 300 hurdles at state. Porter — who also competed in the pole vault and 4x200meter relay — earned the Bellevue Christian girls Hustle Award last season, as well. “I think my dedication through all the practices and my coaches really helped me.
She likes running in general — and leaping over things, she laughed. Other favorite parts of running are the competition, the adrenaline and meeting other athletes. Reaching the finish line sets her emotions alight: “It’s kind of like, ‘Oh my gosh, I gotta do this! I gotta do this!’” Due to the wear and tear of her right elbow, Courtney’s gymnastics career ended three years ago, but she’s still dancing. She’s well-skilled in ballet, jazz, hip hop, pointe and lyrical dance, and this holiday season, she’s a member of the dance troupe at Snowflake Lane in Bellevue. At school, she sports a 4.0 grade-point average and plays trumpet in the jazz band and symphonic wind ensemble. Come February, she’ll be back out on the track and concentrating on clearing those hurdles again and making it back to the state meet. If you are interested in sponsoring Courtney for the Down Under Games, contact porterjon@comcast.net.
“She’s very intense, very focused. I don’t think she can even hear us yelling for her when she’s running. All she’s thinking about is running.”

Kim Porter on her daughter Courtney
Courtney Porter, center, competes at the 1A state meet. Courtesy of “Doc” Sleight My coaches were always really on me about trying to do my best all the time, and so that just really got my mindset going,” said Porter, adding that dance and gymnastics gave her the muscle structure and form to excel at hurdles. “When I got to state, it was really a blessing because I worked so hard for that. Afterward, it was just like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe this is actually happening’… it was amazing.”
Porter wasn’t the only one who was pleased with her performances last year. The Down Under Sports committee sent her a letter in September, inviting her to join the Washington state team at its international games in July in Australia. Founded in 1989, the games also feature football, basketball, volleyball, cross country and wrestling. “I feel really blessed and amazed that they would pick
me. I feel like my dedication and hard work has paid off,” said Porter, who began running in seventh grade, but turned things up a few notches as a freshman. Added Kim Porter, Courtney’s mother: “She’s very intense, very focused. I don’t think she can even hear us yelling for her when she’s running. All she’s thinking about is running.” Courtney sets high standards for herself, Kim said, and is driven to set a good example for her teammates. “I think that doing really well in this sport, I feel like it’s humbled me a lot. God has given me this talent that I should use to show others that if you work hard, then you can also be where I am and it will pay off,” Courtney said.
