Sharp takes council seat with theft charges looming BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com
Ken Sharp took an oath of office Tuesday night to begin his four-year term on the Kent City Council under the shadow of facing seven counts of first-degree theft charges. King County prosecutors charged Sharp in August for reportedly stealing $297,500 from his 93-year-old mother’s bank account and putting the money into his account. If convicted as charged, Sharp faces a prison sentence of 22 to 29 months. He also would have to give up his
council seat. Sharp pleaded not guilty to the charges on Aug. 29. Sharp, 66, the owner of Minuteman Press in Kent, has a hearing scheduled for Jan. 13 in King County Superior Court. At a hearing, a trial date can be set or attorneys can ask for more time to prepare the case and receive a new hearing date from the judge. Mayor Suzette Cooke asked Sharp near the end of the council meeting for a comment about his initial days as a council member. “I think in my short time here and the orientations I’ve had with the dif-
ferent department heads and meeting with the council members I’m really impressed with the quality and dedication of the people,” Sharp said. “I’ve got a lot to learn and I know I can get lots of help from them.” Sharp will serve on the Council’s Public Works Committee and the Parks and Human Services Committee, according to the assignments announced by new Council President Dana Ralph. When Angela “Spunky” Robinson’s mother and uncle died in 2000, she couldn’t remain in her home state of South Carolina and left on a cross country trip, arriving in Federal Way in 2007. Having known little more than a life of minimum wage jobs, she took a class at Green River Community College to
become certified as a road flagger. But once on campus, Robinson realized she could attend school on federal funding and jumped at the chance. She had missed out on a large part of her education, so before she could take the information technology classes that would eventually secure her a stable job at the college, she had to get her GED. “I had never been to high school, so [ more PROGRAMS page 2 ]
Kent man charged with stealing $8,500 cash from woman he met online BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com
A 24-year-old Kent man allegedly set up a Bellevue woman he met through an online dating service to steal $8,500 in cash from her for a trip to Las Vegas and a move to Florida. King County prosecu-
tors charged Efrem Addisu Menegesha on Dec. 31 with first-degree theft for reportedly taking $8,500 from the woman in September after the two had dated throughout the summer and planned to move to Florida, according to charging papers. Menegesha, who reportedly moved to Florida and has not been arrested, is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 14 at the King County Courthouse in Seattle. What is Joint Tenancy? Joint tenancy is a form of ownership in which two or more persons own an asset jointly. Upon the death of one, the ownership of the asset is presumed to pass to the surviving joint owner(s) without probate. Sometimes joint tenancy is useful. But it may be inconsistent with the provisions of the Will and create uncertainty or conflict after death. In other cases, joint tenancy can disrupt a plan to minimize estate taxes. [ PROGRAMS from page 1 ] not a lot of resources that those classes got me up to speed on everything I missed there,” said the 37-year-old Robinson, who now works as an IT instructor at GRCC. Through the college’s Language Academic Skills and Wellness (LAW) Division, Robinson was able to get her basics taken care of while still taking math classes that would count toward an associate degree. The navigating forms, class schedules and degree requirements can be a trial for anyone new to the system, and can take almost as much time as studies do. To respond to this, the college established two programs — Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) and Master Achiever Center (MAC) — to help students who lost their first chance at an education back into the system. Former dean Laura Dizazzo started the programs through a grant from CollegeBoard’s Washington office. The programs assist three different types of students: those who are lacking in certain skill developments, those with English as second language learners and those earning their GEDs. “Honestly, I don’t think the students could deal without the programs,” Robinson said. “There’s
students can go out of the school and find.” “When people come to college, really, it’s hard for everyone,” said I-BEST director Cynthia Gaede. “Those students, our largest number, in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) are working age, between 21 and 44. So they almost all have families.” Most of the students have families and careers and are working their way toward developing new skills. Unfortunately, the responsibilities of raising a family and maintaining a job make it difficult to sort through academia, and that’s where the MAC comes into play. “We really try to engage the students in conversations about what they’re good at,” said Bev Baker, a Green River instructor. “Especially people who were GED students who may have beliefs about themselves that they’re not good at anything, but really they actually are.” So the MAC counselors work to find those students strengths and find them programs that build on that. The center also provides classroom assistance, such as explaining academic basics to students who are new to the system. “Instructors go over things like the syllabus or the textbook, but for some people, they need to have a page by page, so who’s got

The rally runs from 10 a.m. to noon at the Kent-Meridian High School cafeteria, 10020 SE 256th St. According to the group, a successful M&O levy would allow the district to restore high priority programs lost to past budget cuts, such as fifth grade band and orchestra and earlier reduced staff positions like counselors and librarians and building maintenance and middle school athletic programs. If it doesn’t pass, 20 percent of the operational budget will be lost, or one in five staff jobs could disappear, the group said. The four-year replacement levy provides up to 24 percent of the district’s annual operational revenue. To learn more, visit www.citizensforkentschools.org

that time? Well, the MAC does,” Gaede said. The programs tie into a running theme for the college to provide reengagement opportunities to adults who didn’t get a chance to get a degree the first time around, or have immigrated to the U.S. and need a boost for reading and writing skills. The classes focus on supporting basic skills like writing and reading as well as technical classes to move them towards a career. For some students, this might be remedial classes in deficient skills such as high school level math to take alongside a college mechanical class. For others, such as ESL student Nimo Abdi who takes basic English classes along with her advanced math classes. The other side of this plan for the college is the MAC, which helps with the logistical side of the process. It helps students process their paperwork, navigates schedules and otherwise provides them with the assistance they need to weave their way through the complex bureaucracy of the educational system. “It’s an evening of the playing field,” Gaede said. “We happen to work with a particular population who struggle.”

Number of Kent pot business applicants grows to 60
LOCAL
The list of Kent applicants to the state for recreational marijuana business licenses keeps on growing. Thirty-one more Kent applicants are on the latest list released Tuesday by the state Liquor Control Board bringing the total number up to 60, including 18 retail outlets. The rest of the applicants are for producer and or processor licenses with numerous applicants seeking both.
A proposed business called Hidup Hijau Inc., even applied for a processor license for an empty storefront at the Kent Station shopping mall, 449 Ramsay Way, Suite A29. The city of Kent bans medical and recreational marijuana businesses. City officials plan to change land use codes in 2014 in order to have a permanent ban against marijuana businesses rather than an ordinance with a six-month ban. The state liquor board has closed the application process but continues to go through a backlog
of applicants. The board has yet to set a timeline of when it will start to issue licenses. If Kent applicants receive a recreational marijuana license from the liquor board, the city won't issue them any permits, said Pat Fitzpatrick, acting city attorney. If the business opens anyway, he said the city will take action. The liquor board will issue licenses to applicants even if a city bans recreational marijuana businesses. The City Council voted 4-3 in November to ban marijuana busi-
Former Kentridge High teacher faces hearing on sex crime charge BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com
A former Kentridge High School teacher faces a King County Superior Court hearing Feb. 4 in Kent on a charge of attempted commercial sexual abuse of a minor. Brent Patrick Conley, 27, of Seattle, could receive a trial date at the hearing or attorneys could ask for more time to prepare the case. He pleaded not guilty to the charge on Oct. 3. He is out on bail. Seattle Police arrested Conley on Sept. 18 outside of a Seattle McDonald's as part of an undercover sting where a detective posed online as a 15-yearold girl seeking sex with older men in exchange for money. Conley is no longer employed by the Kent School District, said district spokesman Chris Loftis in a Jan. 3 email. The district initially placed Conley on paid administrative leave. He was a first year English and social studies teacher at the school. Senior Deputy Prosecutor Carol Spoor wrote in the charging papers that Conley did solicit, offer or request to

Sharp beat Stober and Barbara Phillips in the Aug. 6 primary. Sharp replaces Elizabeth Albertson on the council. Albertson didn’t seek re-election. During a welcome reception before the council meeting, Sharp said a few words to those who gathered outside of Council Chambers at City Hall. “I want to thank all of you here,” Sharp said. “I know most of the people in this room. According to emails obtained by police, Conley planned to take the girl to his Seattle home for sex. Conley has no prior criminal history, according to the charging papers. Conley reportedly responded to an ad in a Casual Encounters section of a popular website featuring a title of, "Student looking for older men," according to charging papers. Conley reportedly responded through email and started up a correspondence where he was told the girl was a high school cheerleader looking to make some money by having sex. The conversations via email and later text continued for two days and Conley reportedly agreed to pay $100 for sex. He agreed to meet her at the McDonald's in downtown Seattle on Fourth Avenue. Officers observed Conley at about 7:06 p.m. on Sept. 18, arriving and parking at the agreed upon meeting location. After a detective left a voicemail for Menegesha, he later phoned the woman and said he would pay her back but the woman has not received any money. Attempts by the woman and police to reach Menegesha by phone were unsuccessful and he eventually had the phone shut off. The woman said she never knew the man’s last name and they usually met at her house. She knew he lived in Kent and worked

Detectives showed the woman a photo of the man from his Washington driver’s license and the woman identified him as the man she dated named Josh. “That’s the guy I fell in love with,” she told detectives after looking at a set of photos of six men, including Menegesha.

When you gotta go: woman kicks down door, breaks window to use the bathroom BY STEVE HUNTER
Assault
shunter@kentreporter.com
Kent Police arrested a woman for investigation of malicious mischief after she allegedly kicked a screen door and broke a window at a home in the 900 block of West Meeker Street after a man refused to let her inside to use the bathroom. The man told officers he didn’t know the woman who banged on his front door at about 8:58 p.m. Dec. 27, according to the police report. When the man told the POLICE woman he wouldn’t let her in, she started to kick the screen door and later reportedly threw something through a ground floor window. The man called 911. Officers found the woman pulling up her pants after urinating by trees near a parking lot not far from the house. Police reported the woman as being extremely intoxicated. She denied she went near the house and said someone else broke the window.
Officers arrested a woman for investigation of fourth-degree assault after she reportedly scratched her boyfriend’s face during a dispute at about 9:26 p.m. New Year’s Eve at a Benson Crest apartment in the 10700 block of Southeast 238th Street. The man told officers he was leaving the apartment when the incident started, according to the police report. The girlfriend asked the man where he was going and he replied, “To church.” But the woman didn’t believe him and said, “You’re cheating on me, aren’t you?” The boyfriend went to get in his car when the girlfriend struck him in the eye with her glasses and scratched him in the face. The man started to drive away when the girlfriend jumped on the hood of his car and tried to rip off a side mirror. Police noticed the man had scratches on his face.

found the man walking near the store along Naden Avenue. He told officers he took the brandy because he wanted to celebrate the new year. The brandy was priced at $16.99.

Illegal camping
A man reportedly tried to steal a bottle of brandy by sticking it down the front of his pants at about 4:25 p.m. New Year’s Eve at Safeway, 210 Washington Ave. S. The man then struggled with store security and fled on foot before police caught him. Officers arrested the man for investigation of assault and theft, according to the police report. The store’s security officers watched the man grab a bottle of brandy and stick it down his pants. He then exited the store without paying for the item. Store security stopped the man outside in the parking lot and brought him back inside, where he pulled away from the two security personnel and shoved them. Police
Police cited a man Dec. 27 for investigation of illegal camping after he reportedly slept for a couple of weeks in a sleeping bag under a tarp at Mill Creek Earthworks Park, 100 Reiten Road. The man told officers he was homeless after his wife recently kicked him out of their house. He said he had been staying in the area for a few weeks because he wanted to stay close to his house and didn’t know where else to go. Police noted they had warned the man earlier in the month to leave the area because the city doesn’t allow camping in the parks. Officers banned the man for 45 days from city parks.

City should consider options, save the par 3 During 2013 I met and talked to most of the Kent City Council candidates and honorable Mayor Suzette Cooke. I asked them about their positions on the possible sale of the Riverbend Par 3 golf course. A few said they would oppose the sale. Some said, “As a business person and elected official,” they will do what’s best in the interests of Kent residents. Well, the time is at hand for the council to make that decision, which will define us as a city if we are true or not to our mission and vision statement of 2025. Selling the par 3 is not and will not serve the seniors and children of Kent. Selling the par 3 will not fix or solve the sustainability issue of the 18hole golf course. There is no guarantee, none whatsoever. What will happen after three or five years when the proceeds from the par 3 are gone? I am baffled about the council’s priorities and how it operates. On the other hand, if we sell the par 3, we will be needing more cops down the road. The par 3 can be made whole with a little increase in fee and proper marketing. There are other options available that the council has not fully considered. For example, moving it under the golf complex enterprise fund to the Kent Parks and Recreation Department could save the par 3. They are prepared for a political and financial face-off with Kent city officials and potential developers to keep a valley treasure that’s dear to the hearts of golfers and duffers, young and old. The nine-hole par 3 course has been an affordable, popular short course of choice for seniors who no longer play for distance, kids who are interested in picking up the clubs for the first time and families who just want to share the spirit of the game. “We’re not necessarily representing just us, we’re representing a ripple of time,” said Richard Anthony, a member of the Committee to Save the Par 3 who plays in the 60-strong senior men’s league at the course. “You’re talking generations (of golfers).” But Riverbend’s operating losses and $2.25 million debt have city officials exploring ways to turn the tide and make the complex financially self-sustainable. One option is selling the par 3 to support the struggling complex’s other entities – the driving range, merchandise shop and 18-hole course. The city has not made a decision. There is no timetable yet for a decision. It remains a difficult, unresolved issue. City Councilmember Dennis Higgins, who has had discussions with interested residents who want to preserve the par 3, remains open to suggestions. “I know the administration continues to look at ideas, and no doubt my council colleagues have also had conversations with interested parties,” Higgins said. “It is still very unclear to me whether any of these ideas taken alone or in combination will be enough to solve the problems of the deficit, of the debt, and of the need to reinvest in the complex. to meet these pressing needs? As we enter a New Year, many people make resolutions concerning their health – perhaps to lose weight, exercise more regularly or get their annual prostate check or mammogram. As your legislator, I have become aware of information we all should know about mammograms. According to recent information from the Mayo Clinic, 60 percent or more of cancer in women with dense breast tissue is missed when the medical staff relies solely on mammograms. And 30 to 40 percent of women have dense breast tissue. My wife is a perfect illustration. In 2012 she was concerned about a breast lump, but her January 2013 mammogram was negative. When she was more concerned in June, an ultrasound and MRI showed she had stage 3 breast cancer. By the grace of God, she is responding well to her treatment, and we expect a full [ more LETTERS page 6 ]
more. What do you think are the most important education issues? Early learning and higher education: Experts agree that early learning plays a huge role in setting students on the path to success, and we all know that access to higher education is becoming tighter and tighter for middle-class families. What should the state do to help kids on either side of the K-12 ladder? The operating budget: We passed two-year budget last June that [ more SULLIVAN page 8 ]

[ KLAAS from page 5 ] “But I would be very happy if a plan comes together that accomplishes all ‌ these goals without needing to allocate from the general fund.â€? Riverbend and Kent are not the only municipal golf course suffering the effects of a soft economy and the valley’s typical months of wet weather. Auburn, Renton, Tukwila, Sumner and Maple Valley are facing similar challenges and have seen similar reductions in the number of annual rounds of golf played since 2007. Kent’s par 3 course has experienced a decrease of 20.5 percent in the annual number of rounds played, which is approximately the average decline for nine hole and par 3 golf courses in Western Washington since 2007, according to a Kent City Council Parks Committee 2012 report.
Still, the Committee to Save the Par 3 wants the city to work out a sensible solution. The group says the city should consider including the par 3 into its more sustainable parks system. They welcome the possibility of a vendor perhaps operating the city-owned course. They welcome improvements to the course to attract more visitors. Kent Parks Director Jeff Watling has told the committee that hiring a management company to run the golf complex or leasing it to someone wouldn’t resolve the debt or the capital improvement needs. Switching the golf complex from an enterprise fund set up to be self-supporting into the general fund would lead to cuts elsewhere in the city budget. But the alternative of losing the par 3, the group says, would be aesthetically irreversible. A possible par 3 sale has attracted developers, notably one
who has expressed an interest in bringing a mixed-use project to fruition. That project could feature retail shops, public open spaces, a hotel, apartments and possibly condos. All of which is a shame to a group of players who have been playing the par 3 for many years. The Committee to Save the Par 3 wants the city to play ball and preserve a course that’s been a part of Kent’s recreational history. The committee fears that once the par 3 is sold, a community treasure will be lost forever. “We have responded ‌ this is worthwhile keeping,â€? said Dick Gravender, president of the par 3 senior men’s league, who has played at the course for about 25 years. “It beautifies what we have here in Kent ‌ rather than have condominiums or whatever else put in over here.â€? Future generations of golfers
would lose big, the group warns. “The young kids need a place to learn how to play golf, and they’re disappearing very fast, said Jerry Turley, a par 3 senior men’s league player. “Whole communities are getting rid of par 3s. This is a great facility. You just can’t do that to our youth. For now, the par 3’s future is unknown. “I can’t say for certain where the road will lead in 2014, Higgins said of the issue. “That will be somewhat at the discretion of the new council president, and certainly a part of the budget discussion later in the year. I appreciate any and all suggestions from the league group, and I will be continuing to explore alternatives. For those interested in joining the committee’s efforts, email savethepar3@ gmail.com.

[ LETTERS from page 5 ] recovery. But with an earlier diagnosis, it might have been better. And without her persistence, it could have been a lot worse. Some states have new laws requiring doctors to tell women that some breast cancer may not show up in mammograms of their dense breast tissue. In principle, I do not think it is government’s job to tell doctors what they should tell their patients. But I do think it is important that women know this information so they know to have the appropriate conversations with their doctors. In addition to this letter, which I hope gets the word out to many, I will be working with breast cancer awareness groups to make us all aware of this critical information. I hope you all have a happy and healthy New Year. – State Rep. Mark Hargrove (R-Covington, 47th District).

Team Seattle includes several Kent players. Edmonds scored two secondquarter touchdowns and rushed for 129 yards on 15 carries, In the semifinals, Seattle held off St. Louis, 6-3, last Friday. St. Louis’ 47-yard game-tying field goal fell just short in the final minute.

While the Kentridge High School wrestling team struggled last year in dual meets, the Chargers took third place in the South Puget Sound League tournament and sent several wrestlers on to regionals. “I wanna do well in duals, but we emphasize getting to state,” Kentridge coach Todd Lantz says. “Our number one goal now is how many kids can we get to state.” While his team contains a heavy number of veteran wrestlers, he still cites overall experience as the team’s biggest weakness. “When you look at a lot of the other teams, like Tahoma, they’ve been

chatting, joking around and having fun together. This is what the six seniors on the team think separates the Conquerors squad from the rest of the South Puget Sound League North. It’s a level of chemistry which is a result of a half dozen girls who began playing together years ago. But, a Jan. 3 game against K-M was the first time since eighth grade that all six — Sarah Toeaina, Kate Kramer, Alycea DeLong, Ashley Rolsma, Jenny Johnson and Ashleigh Key — were all able to play together.
some kids come into it who haven’t been doing it till freshman year.”
Kramer returned in that game after a knee injury while DeLong, who injured the ACL, MCL and meniscus of her right knee in July 2012, did not play at all during the 2012-2013 season. DeLong said it was hard watching from the bench her junior season. “It hurt emotionally,” DeLong said. “Those crunch-time games, it was tense. Being back this year, it’s fun. It’s been great.” This season, DeLong is still wearing a brace, something she adjusted to, but it slowed her down initially.
Lantz says that the most important rule to staying on top of wrestling skills is constant practice. “Wrestling is such a sport you have to wrestle year round,” he says. “If you don’t wrestle year round you’re never going to be that successful in the program, and that’s what we’re trying to institute here.” Whether it’s the Tahoma Bear Claw Wrestling Club or Reality Sports Wrestling Club, Lantz’s primary goal is to encourage his wrestlers to continue their training in the offseason to build the team’s talent pool. To help compensate for the experience gap, Lantz knows that he’ll need to [ more KENTRIDGE page 8 ]
She said she has just begun to feel normal recently. “When you’ve been together this long you have fun together,” Johnson said after practice Jan. 2. “It’s exciting, too, because we’ve always had that missing piece.” Toeaina added, “It’s a relief knowing that we have a deeper bench.” DeLong echoed those sentiments, adding that it is a good feeling to have everyone back and healthy. By doing so, he hopes the new wrestlers will learn from examples the vets set. “The tougher our room is, the tougher all the kids will get, they’ll get better and stronger and more aggressive, and they’ll be more technical,” he says. “So to get the younger guys with the more experienced guys is the key.” Of these veterans, he is particularly looking to sophomore Derek Freitag, who took fifth place at the recent Tri-State match, and also participated in state last year. “He’s just a tough kid,” says Lantz. “He understands his hips, he’s got great balance. I see good things from Derek.” Lantz also has high hopes

[ KENTWOOD from page 7 ] “Now that we have (Kramer) back, we have that extra person on the bench,” DeLong said. “Once we get into the flow, I think we’ll be set.” Chemistry of those six seniors, plus the handful of underclassmen who round out the roster, is one thing, but the experience the Kentwood girls have will play into the success the team aspires to this season. The Conks made it to the regional round of state two years ago and played two games at the Tacoma Dome after a double overtime thriller over Lynwood in the regional round a year ago. “Our chemistry off the court, but on the court as well (is a strength) because we’ve played together for so long,” Johnson said. “It’s weird. Sometimes coach says it seems like we know where we’re going to be before we get there.” Johnson and Toeaina said that right now the plan is to do well in league to make it back to the playoffs. “It’s important for us to focus on the task at hand and not look too far ahead,” Johnson said. “Knowing it’s our last year together, we want to go out with a bang.” One game circled on the calendar is the rematch with Kentridge – the lone loss for Kentwood in league this season – set for Jan. 16 on the Conks home floor. “We’re excited to play them again,” Toeaina said. DeLong added, “We just want to redeem ourselves. That was not Kentwood basketball.”

THE WORD, ACCORDING TO SHERMAN BY JOHN BOYLE (Everett) Herald Writer
Depending on your perspective, Richard Sherman is either best known as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks, or as one of the NFL’s biggest talkers. In reality, he is both. Sherman’s standout play is why he’s in the spotlight in the first place, but his brashness/confidence/cockiness/ whatever you want to call it is also a big part of who he is. On the field, Sherman uses his trash talk to get into an opponent’s head — we’re looking at you, Steve Smith — and off the field he uses it to build his brand. Here we offer a small sampling of Sherman’s greatest hits, so to speak: “U Mad Bro?” — Oct. 14, 2012. Sherman, via Twitter, with his now-signature line pasted over a picture of New England quarterback Tom Brady following a Seahawks win over the Patriots. “Sometimes, man, when the bully gets bullied, that’s how it happens.” — Oct. 24, 2012. Sherman responding to 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh’s complaints about the physical play of Seattle’s defensive backs.
Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman yells as he heads out of the tunnel during a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders last August. JENNIFER BUCHANAN, The Herald
“In my 24 years of life, I’m better at life than you.” — March 7, 2013. The money shot from a sometimes hilarious, sometimes awkward takedown of ESPN’s resident instigator, Skip Bayless, during an appearance on “First Take.” “It helps when you don’t listen to the idiots in the draft room. When you don’t listen to the idiots, you find players like Jeremy Lane and Byron Maxwell and myself and Kam Chancellor, the list goes on, Russell Wilson. But if you sit there and listen to the idiots like Mel Kiper and Todd McShay and things like that, you miss a lot of good players.” — Dec. 19, 2013. Sherman explaining why the Seahawks have been able to find so many steals in the draft. “I don’t want to be an island. I want to be more of a tourist attraction. You stop here, I take your money and you go.” — Nov. 14. 2013. Sherman when asked if he
takes it as a sign of respect that teams are throwing away from him, which is how cornerback Darrelle Revis earned the nickname “Revis Island.” “A.J. Green is just a lot of noise talking and bad routes.” — Oct. 30, 2011. Sherman to Sports Radio KJR’s Curtis Crabtree following his first NFL start, a game in which he suffered a concussion early and kept playing, according to an article he wrote this season for TheMMQB.com. “I’m still a fifth-round pick last I checked. That will never go away.” — Dec. 27, 2012. Sherman describing why he’ll always play with a chip on his shoulder, even after gaining recognition as one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks. “I wanted to make a statement to my city. I’m from Compton (Calif.), and it’s hard for people to understand that you can be an athlete and have high academic standards and achieve high academic things. So, I really wanted to make that known to people that you can go to Stanford from Compton.” — April 30, 2011. Sherman on the day he was drafted, explaining why he went to Stanford despite also having an offer from USC.

Here are three indoor plants that will thrive in low light, dry air and forgive you when you forget to water. Give them a try and you’ll enjoy the benefits of living or working around living plant material that will take in the carbon dioxide that we give off as humans and turn it into the oxygen that we need to breathe easy. When you think about it, helping us breathe is a pretty good job for a plant. Cast Iron plant (Aspidistra elatior): Never has there been a houseplant with a more appropriate common name. In the south this houseplant is also called “the barber shop plant because it seems to be the indoor mascot of every barber shop. The leaves start at the base of the plant so it never looks “leggy and

they sprout as long, arching and leathery green. Some varieties now come with yellow or white variegation on the foliage and this splash of color can really light up a dark corner. Inexpensive, easy to find, even at big box stores, it is time we return to the splendor of the Victorian age – when every parlor proudly displayed a potted plant – most often that would be the hard-to-kill Aspidistra. Here’s a growing tip: For maximum leaf color do not overfeed this houseplant, and to keep the leaves from burning keep it away from bright, sunny windows – unless you have a barber shop with an awning out front. The second week of January is prime time for indoor gardening. If you’ve watched houseplants wither and die, you aren’t growing the right house plants. Every home and every office can host a living plant no matter how cold, warm, dark or otherwise inhospitable the space may seem. Nature finds a way to support life.
Dracaena: This is a large family of survivors that all make great indoor plants. The Hawaiian Ti plant is a dracaena as is the highly variegated dumb cane. (Note to pet owners: Dumb cane earned its name because chewing on the stems or leaves will cause numbness of the mouth.) You can enjoy the long, narrow leaves of a potted dracaena in a dark corner, warm office or cool sunroom. Some varieties have very dark – almost purple leaves while others sport foliage with bright white edges or yellow blotches.
Growing tip: Any dracaena that grows too tall or leggy can be cut almost to soil level and new leaves will sprout from the base so you’ll have a much more compact houseplant. You can also cut up the bare stems and lay them on their side to root in moist soil, or place the top growth from your pruning adventure into a glass of water until new roots form on the stem. Dracaena just loves to re-invent itself. Pathos: (Scindapsus) For any situation where

a hanging houseplant is needed- such as on the top of a bookcase or to fill in the space on top of cabinets, the answer is the drought-resistant pathos plant. Glossy, heart-shaped leaves sprout from the long dangling stems and even in warm homes with dry, indoor air this houseplant

will carry on without complaint. The variegated form has attractive cream and yellow markings on the leaves and pathos can also be trained to grow upright on a piece of bark or other support. Growing tip: Do not overwater this plant. Check at the soil line for rotting of the stem and do not buy plants that have been overwatered. You can tell by checking for brown or black markings on the stem near the soil line. More tough survivors for your indoor jungle: Ivy, ferns, philodendron and palms are other indoor plants that adjust and thrive even for people who claim they can’t grow anything. The easiest
way to murder a houseplant is to overwater. Poor drainage will also rot the roots so always make sure your containers have drainage holes and don’t let any plant sit for days in collected drainage water. Too little to drink is a lot better for houseplants than too much. Providing Complete Plumbing & Heating Services in King County Since 1964
Heating Season is Here! Check out our Furnace Tune-up Special Below!
Q/A | with David Brown – Owner, Fox Plumbing & Heating “How did Fox Plumbing & HeatQ ing get started?” :
A
: Virgil Fox started the company in 1964; even as a young man, I loved “hands on work” and was proud to be a tradesman. I joined the company in 1973 and thrived in the environment of high standards and hard work. By 1979 I was half owner of the company, purchasing it in its entirety in 1983. I was dedicated to the value of quality service at a fair price and understood the importance of keeping every customer, since then I’ve expanded but maintained our deep commitment to integrity and quality work. Our customers tell us time and time again that we are the most trustworthy plumbing service in King County.
Q
:
“What plumbing services do you offer? And do you do both repair and installation?”
A
: If it has to do with pipes and water, we have the skilled workforce to both fix ailing systems and install new systems. We work in old and new homes as well as in businesses and commercial environments – we are experts in fixing old systems. We’re not always looking to sell people something new; if it can be fixed we fix it. We offer a full range of plumbing services from sewers to hot water tanks. We help our customers save money by offering plumbing system tune-ups, which are continually growing in popularity because they save people on the cost of repairs by catching problems early. We’re very excited to announce that
the problem. After an emergency many of our customers participate in our $99 annual Plumbing Tune-up program, which saves them hundreds even thousands of dollars in the long run and they are seeing great improvements in their plumbing systems.
we have expanded and now service and install all types of heating, furnaces and air conditioning, too. We are committed to our customers and to our staff, providing on-going training to make sure our technicians are simply the best trained in the business.
Q “Do you guarantee your services?” A :
: Absolutely, we have the best written warranties in the business. We provide our customers with the right price for the service and then guarantee the work. We have received the best service award from Angie’s list for over 6 years and are always top rated. Our customers will tell you about their experience with Fox Plumbing and Heating and we encourage them to do so. 80% of our new business comes from current customer referrals, we’re proud of this record and intend to continue it, every customer is important to us, I’ve built this whole business around satisfied customers, when we say “it’s all about service”, we mean it.
an emergency, what’s the best thing to do? What about afterhours and on Q “In the weekends?” :
A
: Call us 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Pipes, sewers, water heaters, toilets, sinks and furnaces can’t tell time and often chose the worst time to act up and break down. We get this and have experts available to assist you whenever you need it, at your home or business. We have dispatchers and technicians on call 24 hours per day. On our website we have emergency water shut off videos to help people in times of emergency. It’s understandable that most people don’t even think of their plumbing until something goes wrong, we often get our best customers through our response to an emergency, we’re there and we fix
I have used FOX Plumbing several times over the years for various problems. Prior to calling them I had used 2 other local companies and found them more interested in selling their products than fixing my problems. FOX has always been responsive, they explain what needs to be done, why and how they will do it--and at a reasonable cost. I own an older home and their staff know their stuff, they are polite and thoughtful of the customers needs. - Nancy Travis, Seattle
