Hundreds of visitors crowded the ShoWare Center on Tuesday night for the ninth annual Kent School District Technology Expo, which shows off some of the cutting edge devices used to enhance learning in the district. The expo featured 113 different booths, featuring KSD programs, private company vendors and individual classrooms. While
some companies like Boeing, Microsoft, and HP had reserved spaces, most of the room was given to teachers to show how technology improved their classrooms. Kent Elementary teachers Jana Yamada and Patty Dunmire showed off how using the district’s Smartboards and iPads made learning interactive for their kindergarten classes. “You have information at your fingertips in seconds,” Dunmire said. “If I talk about a platypus, it helps with visualization.”
The city of Kent will receive a second $5 million grant from the state to help extend South 224th Street over Highway 167 and up the East Hill. “We hope to bid it this fall,” said City Public Works Director Tim LaPorte, according to a video of the Jan. 6 City Council’s Public Works Committee meeting. The state Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) awarded a $5 million grant for each of the first two phases of the project. A third phase of construction would get the new three-lane street all the way up to the Benson Highway from the East Valley Highway. City officials estimate the total cost of the 1.8-mile extension at $31 million. Kent has finished design work on the first phase that includes a bridge or overpass across Highway 167 at South 224th Street, which dead ends just west of the freeway near a couple of hotels. The new street would touch down [ more PROJECT page 4 ]

Kent schools place levy on Feb. 11 ballot BY ROSS COYLE rcoyle@kentreporter.com
The Kent School Board has revised its request for a maintenance and operations levy, bringing the new levy amount to
$307.4 million over the next four years, which will be paired with a $30 million technology levy. The levies account for 24 percent of the district’s annual budget. The board adjusted the request by replacing Resolution 1428 with Resolution 1430. At the Dec. 11 board meeting, community members spoke about their ideas for the district’s needs, and the board decided that the requested levy amount was insuf-
ficient to accommodate those needs. The tech levy is a replacement for the existing levy, which voters passed in 2010 and expires at the end of this year. It provides a significant amount of funding to the district through a tax per $1,000 of assessed property value. The combined levies will cost an average of $4.45 per $1,000 of property value over four years.
The Kent City Council and two prospective Kent recreational marijuana business owners participated in a spirited debate in connection with the city’s ban against such businesses. Chris Kealy, of Tacoma, told the council at its Jan. 7 public hearing about the ban that he applied to the state Liquor Control Board for licenses to open a producer and

With its ranks swelling, Kent’s iGrad program has expanded to a 4,000-square-foot building formerly occupied by a realty company in a Kent East Hill shopping center. The growth reflects an increased demand for iGrad’s services from at-risk students and high school dropouts. Kent School District’s youth re-engagement program has more than doubled with an enrollment of 564 students. Director Carol Cleveland had to turn students away until the building opened. iGrad’s most desired programs are split among culinary arts, dental assistants and the visual arts, as well as technical programs like computer programming, engineering and robotics. Because not all of these programs are offered at Green River Community College, Cleveland is reaching out to the Puget Sound Skills Center in Burien. The building provides two classrooms, seven offices, a nurses station and two conference rooms. “It’s a nicer facility than the facility that I currently have,” Cleveland said. The district created iGrad last year with a $20,000 endowment from the state. It acts as a specialized alternative school to reengage dropouts and students at risk of dropping out of high school by providing them with the time and resources to learn on their own schedule.
[ LEVY from page 1 ] These funds will pay for resources the district needs, as well as re-instituting programs which were lost after recent budget cuts such as the government sequestration. State education funding has gradually shrunk over the past decade, and now only accounts for 66 percent of the district’s budget. Federal funding amounts to less than 10 percent. District tax levies bridge these funding gaps to provide the final percentages needed for the district to function. Voters will decide on the levy during a special election on Feb. 11. The tech levy will run side by side with an operations levy to pay for staffing, services and logistics support.

Kent City Councilman Ken Sharp had his latest court date for first-degree theft charges continued to Feb. 19. Sharp had a King County Superior Court hearing Monday continued for further investigation, said defense attorney Mark Prothero in an email. At a hearing, a trial date can be set or attorneys can ask for more time to prepare the case and receive a new hearing date from the judge. Sharp began his four-year term on the council this month. He took an oath of office Jan. 7. The 66-year-old Sharp faces seven counts of firstdegree theft for reportedly stealing $297,500 from his 93-year-old mother’s bank account and putting the money into his account. If convicted as charged, Sharp faces a prison sentence of 22 to 29 months. He also would have to give up his council seat. Sharp pleaded not guilty to the charges Aug. 29. King County prosecutors filed charges Aug. 15 against Sharp. Federal Way Police arrested him for investigation of theft on June 21. His mother lived in Federal Way at the time of the alleged theft.

Allegro Performing Arts Academy, an 18-year icon of Kent, has big plans in store for 2014, including a move to a new location at 222 Central Ave., the former site of a Stupid Prices store. This will be Allegro’s third move, and owner Tonya Goodwillie hopes it will be the final one. She started with a 3,000-squarefoot studio across from Smith Brothers Dairy, then moved to a 12,000-squarefoot building on South Central Avenue, and finally to Central and Gowe Street. “We’re calling this our forever home,” said Goodwillie as she points out all the new features planned for the studio. While she continues classes at her existing location at 1209 Central Ave. S., she plans to have the new studio ready by the end of the month, and has a grand opening party scheduled from 5-7 p.m. on Jan. 26. The 12,000-square-foot
suffered serious head trauma. Chandra told State Patrol troopers he didn’t think he had that much to drink. Troopers noted they could smell a strong and obvious odor of intoxicants coming from Chandra’s breath. The group had been at a house party that included some drinking of alcohol. Witnesses saw Chandra take at least of couple of shots of vodka. Two passengers were seated on the laps of other passengers in the back seat.

Tonya Goodwillie checks out the new site of the Allegro Performing Arts Academy at 222 Central Ave. ROSS COYLE, Kent Reporter building won’t be a size increase from Goodwillie’s existing studio, but instead the former store’s open space has allowed her to meticulously design her studio from the ground up. In her previous buildings, she’s had to modify her classes to the building’s design. This time around it’s the opposite. The new studio boasts six dance rooms with mirrors and observation windows. Four 1,200-square-foot rooms complemented by a smaller 800-square-foot room for children’s classes and a 1,700-square-foot room for larger productions. Additionally, she’s made space for children and teenage lounge and study spaces, to make the studio a place for her stu-
dents to do homework or relax after school. Progress on the building hasn’t completely been smooth for Goodwillie, who says that she’s run into her share of hurdles, from planning to the costs. Getting permits from the city alone took several weeks, which stalled construction. “We were just sitting on our hands doing nothing, and that set us back three weeks,” she said. She’s also had to budget for overages and additional fees, which she hopes she’ll be able to manage as a small business owner. “It’s scary, I’ve got some loans to pay off now,” she said with a nervous chuckle. “This has been the most stressful thing I’ve ever done.”

The Kent City Council unanimously voted for its new council president at its first meeting of the new year. Councilmember Dana Ralph, who is midway through her first term, received an unanimous vote Jan. 7 by the council for the two-year position. Ralph’s new role requires her to set the council meeting agendas, attend regional meetings to represent the council’s views and to represent the city of Kent as Mayor Pro Tem in the mayor’s absence. Ralph thanked the Council for the trust placed in her, and promised to do the best she can to represent them and the residents of Kent. “I will always make myself available to hear questions and concerns,” Ralph said. “I look forward to continuing the progress we’ve made as the economy improves and keeping the lines of communication open.”

As Chandra drove along the freeway, a front-seat passenger reportedly passed or showed a cellphone to Chandra that had a photo of a scantily clad woman. Crews will construct a second bridge over Garrison Creek near 93rd Avenue South. The state Department of Transportation is reviewing the design of the bridge across the freeway. Once the state completes its review and approves the project, the city will take construction bids. Phase One gets the street across the freeway. “Phase Two extends from 218th and 224th and gets us over Garrison Creek to about 94th Avenue,” said Ken Langholz, city design engineer supervisor. The City Council approved in 2010 a Local Improvement District that will raise about $9.5 million from fees paid by property owners in the area to help fund
[ POT from page 1 ] processor facility at his property at 11024 S.E. 208th St., in the Panther Lake area of Kent. He submitted the license under the name of Spinning Heads, Inc. “As a producer-processor we would not be in view of your citizens,” said Kealy, who also appeared in front of the council in November when it voted 4-3 to approve a six-month moratorium to keep marijuana businesses out of Kent. “We would just be employers of your citizens. How we intend to operate and go forward is to be inside the state processes that allow for legalization of this product.” Voters statewide in 2012 approved Initiative 502 to allow recreational marijuana sales, producing and processing. The liquor board will issue licenses later this year for retailers, producers and processors. Kealy emphasized he’s not
the extension. Other city funds for the extension will come from storm drainage fees, the business and occupation tax (B&O) and transportation impact fees. Another $8 million is still needed to fund Phase Three of the project to extend the street from 94th Avenue South to 108th Avenue Southeast. “This corridor has been in planning since 1987 as an east-west corridor,” LaPorte said. The council unanimously approved the project in 2008 in an effort to provide an alternate route between the Kent Valley and East Hill, as well as improve safety on the upper portion of the road where it will replace a narrow street that lacks paved shoulders, sidewalks and a turn lane. Councilman Dennis Higgins explained at the meeting last week the reasons the city continues to focus on the South 224th-228th Street corridor, including plans
interested in the retail sale of marijuana that’s expected to be much more noticeable to the public when outlet stores open. The liquor board has set a limit of three retail stores in Kent. “Mr. Kealy, I understand you are not open for retail for your product,” Councilman Les Thomas said. “However, you’re producing it, you’re processing it, it’s got to go somewhere to be distributed.” Councilman Dennis Higgins asked Kealy about how much of an investment he plans to make in Kent with his marijuana business. “I have a building already under construction so I’m spending $8 million either way,” Kealy said. “I’m going to spend another $12 million in Kent and employ 102 people and continue operations at an annual budget of over $10 million.” Higgins then asked Kealy what the facility would look like to someone passing by
on the street. “It will look just like a mini-storage with no vacancy,” said Kealy, who added there would be no odor and no signage. “It will have eight trucks a day going in and out.” As far as the economic impact, Kealy said the state keeps most of the money. “Unfortunately, the city is not getting a good cut on this deal and I think it’s less than $100,000 a year at this point,” said Kealy, who added he would like

to see that changed at the state level so cities receive a portion of the recreational marijuana sales taxes. Kent Acting City Attorney Pat Fitzpatrick said the city has analyzed the marijuana tax issue. “We do not get any of the sales tax through the threetier tax system of manufacturing, producing and sale,” Fitzpatrick said. “We do get some B&O (business and occupation) tax.” Kent resident Steve Manzaneres testified at the

He was surprised to hear from Fitzpatrick that the state plans to keep all of the marijuana sales tax revenue. “The state gets it all?” Manzaneres said. “Well, you better change it.” Seattle attorney Christine Masse, who represents Kealy in his efforts to open a marijuana business, told the council it should take a leadership role in regulating

City staff also informed the Public Works Committee about two other grants. • The state Department of Commerce awarded $727,500 to fund the Interurban Trail Connector, a paved bicycle path from along the south side of South 228th Street from the Interurban Trail (at the UP tracks) to the West Valley Highway, also known as 68th Avenue South. The trail will be about 1,800 feet long and provide a link between residential and office areas around South 228th Street with the downtown commercial area. “It’s a very important addition to our bike system for our employers in the valley,” Council President Dana Ralph said. “We have some large employers and a big portion of their employees want to be able to commute to work and this fill in some of the gaps.”
REI is at 6750 S. 228th St. Construction is expected to start in 2015. The city actually requested $1.5 million for the project, but will use the grant to get the project underway. “We’ll stretch it as far as we can,” LaPorte said. • Kent also received a $300,000 federal grant to design Central Avenue South pavement improvements from Willis Street to South 262nd Street, a distance of just under a mile. The street has many cracks, rutting and patches and requires reconstruction and an asphalt overlay. The road overlay will cost more than $2 million with total cost estimated at about $5 million. The city has not yet approved funds for construction. Higgins said the council has discussed using B&O funds in 2016 to repair Central Avenue South.

for a grade separation of the street from the railroad tracks at the Union Pacific (UP) crossing, as opposed to South 212th Street projects. “Through decisions made by previous councils the city and state have invested a great deal of money on this corridor and there are grants on the UP overpass that can’t be repurposed for 212th,” Higgins said. “That also is an important project but we don’t have anywhere near the funding to move forward on that project whereas this corridor also is a priority the state is providing funds for to connect with SR 509. I’d like to get the 212th grade separated, but the city has a great deal invested to complete this corridor and is much closer to doing so.” Higgins used a football metaphor to describe the difference. “On this project we’re like on the 5-yard line and on the 212th overpasses we’re on the 50-yard line,” he said.

Rep. Pat Sullivan
“Will the state Legislature pass a transportation package?”
COMMENTARY
?
Question of the week:
There’s a lot of buzz out there right now about the possibility of a new transportation package that includes funding for some new projects and completion of projects already under way. The House of Representatives approved a package late last spring, but the Senate has yet to pass either that bill or an alternative. However, I spent a good part of November and December in multiple meetings with other legislators and Gov. Jay Inslee, working on a plan that will meet the needs of all parts of the state. Let’s face it; the needs are there – especially in our part of King County. There’s a lot of focus on the mega-projects north of us, like the Alaskan Way viaduct and the 520 floating bridge. But our end of the county is too often ignored. Take the Puget Sound Gateway, for example. Completing SR 167/SR 509 will provide a direct link from the Port of Tacoma to Kent – the second largest distribution center on the West Coast. A full 44 percent of trucks leaving the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma are heading in our direction. Additionally, it would provide a much-needed connection for agricultural products moving from the fields and orchards of Eastern Washington to the port for export overseas. It is estimated that 100,000 vehicles per day will use SR 167 once it’s done, significantly decreasing traffic on I-5 and improving safety. Trucks must use surface streets through neighborhoods to get to Kent, and the accident ratio on the non-freeway section of the route are 20-70 percent higher than the statewide average for similar roads. What about jobs? Experts believe that a completed SR 167 could fuel job growth by $10 billion or more if the Port of Tacoma expands its international cargo operations – something it plans to do if there are

Help restore, enhance education, vote yes on levy My name is Reby Helland and I am a fifth-grade teacher at Lake Youngs Elementary in the Kent School District. I am not a community member of Kent; therefore I do not get to vote for this levy on Feb. 11. So, I am writing not to influence your decision, but as the voice for my students. In this day and age, as a teacher, I am always asked to do more with less. Currently, I do not have materials to teach my students the new common core standards. My students are being denied opportunities for field trips and enrichment programs. My students, who are being bullied out on the playground, have no trained professional to turn to because we have no school counselors. The arts and athletic programs no longer exist for my students. Why should my students have to do with less when you have to power to give them more? You have to power in your vote on Feb. 11 to provide the money needed for teachers to get materials aligned with the new common core standards. You have the power to say yes to reinstating fifth-grade band and orchestra. You have to power to say yes to lowering class sizes. You have the power to say yes to reinstating before and after school programs in order for all students to be successful. You have the power to put counselors back in our schools.
Letters policy The Kent Reporter welcomes letters to the editor on any subject. Letters must include a name, address and daytime phone number for verification purposes. Letters may be edited for length. Letters should be no more than 250 words in length. Submissions may be printed both in the paper and electronically. Deadline for letters to be considered for publication is 2 p.m. Tuesday.
You have the power to say to students, “I believe in you. You are worth it!” According to OSPI, Kent’s per pupil levy spending is well below the state average. Why are my students not worth average? If you want above average students, if you want exceptional students, don’t just talk the talk, walk the walk and vote yes for this levy. The Kent School District’s vision is to “successfully prepare all students for their futures.” These students only get one chance. This is their chance, their time. Don’t tell them, “You aren’t worth it.” By saying yes to this levy it will restore cuts made in the past, it will enhance the education experience of our students now, and it will propel them into their future. Let’s save our precious par 3 Fore! This is the sound you don’t want to hear on the golf course. It’s a warning following an errant shot that is heading in your direction. The Kent City Council is firing an errant shot without a warning, with the possible sale of the Riverbend Par 3 course to developers. Their intention is to (possibly) put in condominiums, a strip mall and parking lots. Picture what the west entrance to Kent on Meeker Street will look like. No view of mountains. No green grass or shrubbery, but plenty more tall buildings, neon signs and traffic. No, I don’t believe the council or the mayor will be hollering or advertising this terrible move of giving up serene beauty of a park-like setting for money. This was not what the city forefathers had in mind when they set this priority aside to be shared with its town folk and surrounding communities. If you would like to keep our public golf course, please write a letter to the Kent City Council expressing your feelings on this decision. Tell them what the golf course means to you and the importance of an affordable public golf course in our community. Address letters to: Kent City Council, 220 Fourth Ave. S., Kent, WA, 98032, or call 253856-5712. – Gary Hallock, Committee to Save the Par 3

Three tips to help prepare you for spring
1. Put your trees and shrubs in large containers – then use them to add shade and privacy to a porch or patio or to accent a lack-luster landscape. Our mild climate means that Japanese maples, azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, pieris, nandina and other shallow rooted

trees and shrubs can be happy in pots for years and years – as long as you remember to water in the summer. Growing Tip: Use a wooden or frost-proof pot at least 24 inches deep for shrubs and 36 inches deep for trees. Make sure there are drainage holes in every pot and add a layer of crumpled nursery six packs or empty plastic water bottles to the bottom of any large pot to keep the potting soil from clogging the drainage holes. The secret ingredient I add to all large containers is a shovel full of compost. I work this into the top few inches of potting soil to help hold moisture and to add some active, living organisms to the otherwise sterile but quickdraining potting soil. My maple trees and small shrubs thrive in outdoor pots for 7 to 10 years without the need for repotting or winter protection. Marianne Binetti
Spring begins with the start of the home and garden shows! The Tacoma Home & Garden Show starts off the season (Jan. 23-26) with indoor display gardens and some plant sales, followed by the granddaddy of all garden shows the Northwest Flower and Garden Show, which is early this year running Feb. 5-9. This week start planning for spring by digging into some more creative ideas about containering your plants – but never containing the enthusiasm for Container Gardens – with a Twist.

2. Get creative with the frosting for your potting soil. A mulch is any material that sits on top of the soil to keep down weeds, seal in moisture and insulate from weather extremes. Bark chips and compost are common mulches in garden beds but when you pot up a plant you can get creative with the top layer of soil. Wine corks make a lightweight, inexpensive and insulation mulch especially around potted plants that need extra winter protection. (Tip: use a felt tip pen to write the name or date on your wine corks if the bottle of wine was used to celebrate a special event or given by a special guest.) Polished rocks make excellent mulch on top of heat-loving sedums and succulents because they not only absorb heat but also keep the succulent foliage from rotting on the damp surface of the naked soil. Seashells as a mulch adds character to any potted plant as well as marbles, pine cones and for large containers, display a dazzling collection of blown glass balls.
Meet Marianne She will be at the Tacoma Home & Garden Show on Jan 23-26 in the Tacoma Dome. She will speak at 2 p.m. each day. Topics will be “Container Gardening with a Twist and “Color, Color, Color. For more information, visit www. otshows.com.
3. Go small in a big way. Miniature gardens have had a big impact on container gardening with nurseries now selling tiny benches, bridges and bird baths to accent the Lilliputian landscapes either with or without fairies. Local nurseries also stock tiny, tidy conifers and other compact shrubs that are natural dwarfs. Group a collection of these mini evergreens with a contrast of color and texture into one attractive container and you’ll have a low maintenance, but high impact container garden that will look great all year long. Growing Tip for miniature gardens: Don’t over fertilize or over water your potted garden of dwarf conifers. These
plants grow very slowly (about ½ inch a year) so they don’t require much care. Poke your finger into the soil and water when the top 2 inches are perfectly dry. A Winter Twist: While we all wait for spring to fill our containers with color you can add some punch to pots by poking cut branches of forsythia into the soil just before the buds of this early bloomer burst into bloom. Add cut stems from any plant with colorful bark such as birch, coral bark maple or red twig dogwood for instant winter drama. Then there are the hellebores – hardworking, winter bloomers waiting for you at nurseries right now and begging to bloom in your pots for many winters to come. FOUNDATION
Trader Joe’s, a unique neighborhood grocery store with foods and beverages, has signed a lease to open a new store in Kent at 12966 SE Kent Kangley Road, inside the Lake Meridian Marketplace. The store is scheduled to open in the second half of 2014. The store will be approximately 12,800 square feet. The store will feature a festive décor that mixes traditional Trader Joe’s elements such as cedar covered walls and Hawaiian motifs, combined with a local flair that includes art celebrating the neighborhood. Trader Joe’s Trader Joe’s (www.traderjoes.com) began in 1958 in the Los Angeles area. Since then, Trader Joe’s has expanded to more than 400 stores in 36 states.
[ SULLIVAN from page 5 ] improved connections to move freight to the docks. Additionally, the construction of that six-mile stretch between Puyallup and Tacoma (originally included in the highway’s design 30 years ago, by the way) would generate nearly 950 direct jobs and 2,000 indirect jobs per year of construction. The transportation needs of South King County have been ignored for too long. It’s time – past time, really – for the Puget Sound Gateway to be funded and built. The economic growth of our area is just as important as the economic growth north of us. No other planned project is more valuable in terms of job creation, economic vitality, increased capacity, vehicle and freight mobility
and safety. The package approved by the House did include funding to complete two lanes. We don’t yet know how much the Senate will fund, if anything. What do you think? Should building this highway be a priority for me? How should we pay for it and other projects in our area? What about transit? I hope you will join me this Saturday between 10:30 a.m. and noon in the Covington City Hall Community Room to discuss these issues further. The address is 16720 SE 271st St., Suite 100 in Covington. …Go Seahawks
HAWKS’ HIGH-FLYING ‘D’ IS SIMPLY BASIC BUT BRILLIANT BY JOHN BOYLE
NFC CHAMPIONSHIP: San Francisco 49ers (14-4) at Seattle Seahawks (14-3), 3:30 p.m. Sunday, CenturyLink Field, FOX 13 TV, KIRO 710 AM, 97.3 FM
(Everett) Herald Columnist
After watching his team’s season come to an end in Seattle, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton gave a variation of the same description most opposing coaches use when it comes to the Seahawks defense. “Seattle was playing their defense,” Payton said. “One of the things they do a very good job with, is they don’t do a lot.” They don’t do a lot. Taken out of context, that could almost seem insulting, but in fact it is one of the highest compliments you can pay Seattle’s defense. The Seahawks aren’t just the NFL’s best defense, they are also in a lot of ways one of the more predictable. More often than not on passing plays, Earl Thomas is going to be the deep safety taking away the middle of the field, Richard Sherman and Byron Maxwell will handle the sidelines, and Kam Chancellor and the linebackers deal with the underneath routes. You’re most likely going to see Seattle in manto-man coverage, or playing a coverthree zone, and it’s not catching anyone off guard, yet it’s still almost unbeatable. “One of the things that we like to do is, ‘All right. Can they deal with us and the way that we play and the style that we play?’ ” defensive coordinator Dan Quinn said. “So although it isn’t lot of different things, we just try to play it in it our style really, really hard.” Like any team, the Seahawks will vary the amount of pressure they bring, but the Seahawks will never be a blitz-happy team, nor are they like Rob Ryan’s Saints defense that mixes things up from week-to-week trying to out-scheme an
opponent. The Seahawks defense essentially says: this is who we are, try to beat us. It’s simple, yet wildly effective, with the Seahawks allowing the fewest yards, points and passing yards this season while also forcing the most turnovers. “People know what they’re going to get, but the thing we say on our defense is, ‘know your role, then do it well,’” Chancellor said. “Everybody has a role, and we try to master our role.” Chancellor is one of three members of Seattle’s secondary to earn Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors this season, which gets to one very significant point about Seattle’s defense – it might not do a lot, but that doesn’t make it easy to beat, or to replicate. The reason some teams try to scheme differently from game to game is that most teams don’t have Seattle’s talent. Chancellor can get away with playing near the line of scrimmage to help against the run or take away underneath routes because Thomas covers so much ground as a single-high safety. And the Seahawks are just fine frequently leaving their cornerbacks on an island because Sherman and Maxwell, as well as Walter Thurmond and Jeremy Lane, have exceptional coverage skills and understand how paramount avoiding big plays is to Pete Carroll. “It depends on the personnel that you have and how much you can stick
Seattle defenders Byron Maxwell (41), Richard Sherman (center) and Earl Thomas go flying as they collide with each other in the end zone to break up a pass against the Rams late in the season. JENNIFER BUCHANAN, The (Everett) Herald.
to that,” Carroll said. “That’s what you always hope to do. I think everybody in coaching would like to just get in your base defense and dig in and do it really well. We’ve been able to grow more toward that as our corner play has been such a factor and the back end has been such a factor with Earl Thomas back there. “It’s allowed us to really zero in on what we’re doing up front, and we’ve gotten better with a really young bunch of guys. It’s helped them be more consistent. The factor that Red Bryant plays, the factor that the Leo (defensive end) position plays in our scheme with Bruce (Irvin) playing outside, it gives us a lot of elements that are still problematic. Kam Chancellor is such a stud on the tight end side and all of that, and (that) gives us elements where we can kind of hang in
there and make them try to knock us out. We vary more than that when we need to, but when we don’t have to we don’t.” And sure, the Seahawks will shake things up from time to time – they trust their defense, but that doesn’t make them stubborn to the point of losing games in the name of pride — doing things like using Sherman in the slot at times to match up with a player like San Francisco’s Anquan Boldin or New Orleans tight end Jimmy Graham. But for the most part, the Seahawks are going to trust everyone involved to simply do their jobs. “Just being normal,” Thomas said. “We’re not going to change for anybody. We have a great scheme here in Seattle. The great thing about us, we practice hard and pay attention to details, and it always pays off for us in the game.”

Thompson the subject of documentary BY KRIS HILL khill@covingtonreporter.com
Courtney Thompson has that intangible “it” factor that allows her to make those around her better, a quality that Seattle documentary producers Jack and Leslie Hamann believe comes through in the hour-long film they made about the Kentlake High School graduate’s life in 2013.
Thompson, who won three state volleyball titles at Kentlake as well as a national championship with the University of Washington in 2005, is the focus of the documentary “Court & Spark,” filmed months after she was part of the American women’s volleyball team, which earned a silver medal at the London Olympic Games in 2012.

Single Persons Need Estate Planning Singles may feel little need for estate planning. The need may actually be greater. A single person may be the sole support for minor children. Assets should be left in trust for the children. A guardian can be designated to provide for physical care. Beneficiaries of I.R.A.s and 401k plans should be planned so funds can support the children. Singles should designate an agent under a durable power of attorney to make decisions if the single person is disabled. Protect your right to distribute your estate as you intend. Consult an estate planning attorney today. I have more than 39 years of experience providing thoughtful and comprehensive counsel for clients. Please call 425-227-8700 to make an appointment. As officials from the Puget Sound Region of USA Volleyball prepared in 2012 for the NCAA Division I Final Four in Seattle in December, they approached the Hamanns about making a documentary as part of the event. Jack Hamann explained that it’s been nearly 20 years since Seattle hosted an NCAA Final Four in any sport so this was particularly important. “The folks from Puget Sound Regional volleyball asked to meet with us and asked how we could go
about doing a documentary,” Hamann said. “We said to them, ‘Immediately perhaps in our community the single greatest example is Courtney Thompson. We said to them, ‘Gosh if you really want to tell a story of volleyball you really have to see if Courtney is interested.’ ” Hamann said that he and his wife explained that a film like this would need a central figure with a compelling story. Thompson seemed the perfect fit to be the focus of a documentary and the Hamanns first met her when she was 12.
It’s Goodwill’s
Shortly after that the Hamanns met with Thompson not long after she returned from the London games. Hamann said they were interested in exploring why she chose volleyball and what that meant for her path in life. “Courtney being Courtney said, ‘Yep, you bet,’ ” Hamann said. “In an important moment, she turned to us and said, ‘If you’re really going to do this, you have to see what life is like for those of us who play overseas.’ Volleyball is a huge sport just about everywhere but here.” At the time, Thompson was preparing to play professionally in Poland. “She said, ‘If you guys
are going to come, you have to come in February,’” Hamann said. “Because in February, that’s when the rubber meets the road. That’s really the essence of what it’s really like, the good, the bad and the ugly of this lifestyle.” In February 2013, Leslie and John Hamann, along with their son Brett, headed to Poland. This is the focus of the first half of the film. The second half follows Thompson with the national team during training in California. To purchase the DVD, go to psrvb.org/documentary.
