You can’t avoid the Seattle Seahawks these days. Wherever you go, there’s 12th Man flags flying, people wearing jerseys and talking Hawks. With a huge 23-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Jan. 19, the Hawks punched their ticket to Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVIII versus the Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Both teams are 15-3, so it’s a true best-against-best matchup, which kicks off at 3:30 p.m.
The Redmond Reporter roamed around town to find out how locals are soaking up the epic Hawk season. ***** Larry Staley hangs his 12th Man flag proudly on the porch of his home on 113th Court Northeast. The 30-year Redmond resident isn’t all about football, though. He’s an ardent Jimmy Buffett fan — a “Parrothead” sticker is slapped on the back window of his truck — and he’s also a motorcycle guy, pointing to a few two-wheeled machines that sit in his garage. Staley said the Seahawks are driven by their coach, Pete Carroll: “People were critical of the coach because he was a college coach. He was a pro coach at one time and he wasn’t terribly successful. But I like the way he does it. He does it like college football: It’s a team. Nobody’s [ more HAWKS page 11 ]

It takes more than just putting up a few buildings to accommodate growth in any given area. A large part of the task includes making sure the local infrastructure can support the increased population. And this is what Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is doing with its upcoming Energize Eastside project. Still in its very early stages, Energize Eastside will bring new higher-capacity electric transmission lines to the Eastside according to the project website (energizeeastside.com). The effort will upgrade PSE’s existing transmission system and the new lines — which will run from Redmond to Renton — will provide more dependable power to the area, the website states. Andy Wappler, vice president of corporate affairs for PSE, said the current transmission lines are nearing capacity and will be above capacity around 2017-18 if no action is taken. And if this happens, the area may experience more power outages, he said. In addition, Energize Eastside will improve PSE’s reliability if something happens, such as a transformer fire like the one that occurred in June 2011 at PSE’s Sammamish substa-
tion in Redmond. The new transmission lines will make it easier for the utility to reroute where it is pulling its power from. A large part of Energize Eastside is public input. PSE held the first of several planned open house events throughout the communities Wednesday evening at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center. Employees were on hand to answer people’s questions about the project, and display boards covered topics ranging from the purpose of the project and possible route options (there are 16 segments, with 19 possible combinations), to if and how electro-magnetic fields coming from transmission lines could affect a person’s health. Bellevue resident Ann Marten was concerned about the latter, but she also wanted to know why the transmission lines couldn’t be installed underground so the area’s views would not be obstructed and there would be less danger from ice and/or fallen trees. Wappler said underground transmission lines are a lot more expensive, and according to state law, the difference in cost from aboveground lines would fall on the local community. In addition, he said, if there is a power outage, it would take up to a few days to fix [ more ENERGIZE page 8 ]

The City of Redmond, Sound Transit and Redmond-based Microsoft Corp. have all teamed up to build a pedestrian and biking bridge that will create better connections within the Overlake neighborhood. The 1,500-foot-long bridge will begin south of the Northeast 40th Street interchange with State Route 520 and cross over 156th Avenue Northeast to connect the west side of the Microsoft campus with the company’s east campus. The bridge will also connect with the SR520 trail located on the west side of the highway, as well as the Overlake Transit Center (OTC). Jim Stanton, Microsoft’s senior community affairs manager for real estate, said the earliest conversations about the bridge took place in 2005 when the company began developing plans for its west campus, which is 1.3 million square feet of office and other work space. At the same time, conversations were just starting for Sound Transit’s East Link light rail extension, which will run from Seattle’s International District, across Interstate 90, through Mercer Island and Bellevue and end at the OTC. Plans to extend the line through downtown Redmond are not yet funded. Stanton said they have been talking with Sound Transit about a possible walking/biking bridge for several years, but actual negotiations did not begin until about two years ago. Through these negotiations, Microsoft and Sound Transit came to a funding agreement that had the tech company contributing $33.3 million to the project. This would pay for the bridge as well as various improvements at the OTC that are beyond the basic scope of adding a light rail stop to the center. These improvements included things such as an expanded bus loop and increased weather protection. Construction is set to begin in just a couple of years.
“We are expecting the bulk of that construction to occur between 2016 and 2019,” said Don Billen, East Link deputy project director for Sound Transit. He said while light rail is not expected to be operating until 2023, the bridge is planned to be complete in early 2020. “It will provide benefits to bus riders in advance (of light rail),” he said. Once construction on the project is complete, the City of Redmond will take ownership of the bridge and maintain it. Joel Pfundt, a principal planner for Redmond, said the bridge will be open to the public and with the city developing Overlake into an urban center, the bridge will help connect the neighborhood. He said the new bridge will make it easier to get around on foot and bicycle and it allows a more direct and comfortable transition between Microsoft’s two campuses. Another benefit of the project is that it will separate bicycle and pedestrian traffic from vehicle traffic, reducing conflicts and improving safety. “It really is a win for everyone,” Pfundt said, adding that the City of Redmond has been working with Sound Transit to develop a similar bridge for the upcoming Overlake Village station. As of right now, the proposed walking/biking steel bridge will be 14 feet wide. It will be lit and covered so users will be protected from the weather. In addition, Billen said bicycle ramps will be installed so cyclists can just ride on or off the bridge without having to carry bikes up or down stairs or take an elevator. Billen said Sound Transit held an open house for East Link, which included the plans for the bridge, at the end of last year and they have received positive responses to the idea of a walking bridge. There will be more opportunities for public input coming up regarding the bridge’s design, though dates have not been set.

At 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the Redmond Police Department (RPD) served a search warrant on a residence in North Seattle. Two adults were taken into custody on multiple charges of possession of stolen property, identity theft, motor-vehicle prowling and other fraud-related charges.
The search warrant was a culmination of an extensive, several-month investigation conducted by the RPD Pro-Act Unit that covered crimes in King and Snohomish County. The investigation is ongoing as there are numerous previously identified victims and more victims are expected to be discovered due to the substantial
amount of property found at the residence. “This case is a great example of the type of thorough investigations conducted by members of our Pro-Act Unit on behalf of property crime victims both in Redmond and the greater King and Snohomish County region,” said Redmond Police Chief Ron Gibson.

An exhilarating year for Seahawks fans
Kerry Carter
GUEST COLUMN
This past year has been nothing short of exhilarating! Being in the Seattle area and feeling the excitement and anticipation build around this Seahawks team and organization, starting with a devastating loss in the final moments of the 2012-13 playoffs against Atlanta. It’s as if the entire Seahawks faithful took that loss to heart and immediately started preparing to come back, better than ever, louder than ever. The 2012 season was my first year out of professional football and represented my transition to fandom. As great an experience as 2012 was, 2013 has dwarfed anything that I could have imagined from a fan perspective. I have truly been able to witness the transformation of a city. From the individuals to businesses and organizations, all rallying this team that is representative of everything special about the Northwest. As a player, you are almost sheltered from everything going on in the non-football world. You enter the bubble of the facility each day and work your butt off with the help of your teammates and coaches, trainers, managers and administration. All of this in hopes that you can collectively achieve the goal set out before you, the challenge to be the best at what you do. You band together and the thought of being a part of something greater motivates you.
As a fan, you watch in anxious anticipation, hoping that your loyalty and pride will someday be rewarded. You would like to believe that in some way your contribution, your rituals, your cheering, does make a difference. This is one of the only environments that I can truly say has made a difference. There is no measure for passion, but if the Guinness World Records for Loudest Cheer at a Stadium can be used as a benchmark, Seattle fans are some of the most passionate in the world. This Sunday, the Seahawks will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. However, they are not just representing their conference, but an entire city, an entire fan base and a culture and community that has more than a vested interest. They are owners: Acknowledged by the organization, appreciated and adored by
the players and the envy of the NFL. I am proud of everything that I have been blessed to accomplish in my career as a professional athlete, but the view from up here, in the stands, in front of the TV, amongst other fans, has brought me a unique sense of pride, satisfaction and accomplishment that I could have never imagined. Go Hawks!!
Kerry Carter was a fullback for the Seattle Seahawks from 2003-04. He co-owns JumpIt Media, a marketing and consulting agency, with fellow former Seahawk Joe Tafoya. The two are also partial owners of Volume 12, a company in Redmond focused on highlighting Seahawks fans as well as charitable causes and organizations in the local community.
I’m no football expert, but I’m rooting for the Seahawks When I was in journalism school at the University of Washington, I applied for a part-time sports clerk position at the Seattle Times. The main duties of the job consisted of taking calls from high school coaches after games to collect box scores. This was for all sports, so in the fall and early winter, that meant football. I knew this going in and knew part of the job interview would be a quiz on sports trivia. With this in mind, I decided to brush up on my football knowledge. I say “brush up.” What I really mean is “try to learn the whole game in one night” since I knew nothing about the sport. And in typical college student fashion, I crammed for the quiz the night before the interview. Needless to say, nothing stuck. I missed pretty much all of the football-related questions, failed the quiz and thus, didn’t get the job.
That was six or seven years ago and let me just say, nothing’s changed. I still know just about nothing about football. Want to know the name of some obscure Harry Potter character? I’m a font of facts. Can’t remember the lyrics to the latest Eminem song? Look no further — I can probably even rap it for you. But tell me Percy Harvin is out for the NFC championship game? All you’ll get is a blank stare while I try to figure out what this means for the Seattle Seahawks: Is this a good thing because he’s a 49er and we don’t want him to play? Or is this a bad thing because he’s a Seahawk and we want him in the game? True story. Seven years as a gymnast, a lifetime of attending Mariners games and five seasons of “Friday Night Lights” on repeat do not make a football expert. Samantha Pak

OPINION
[4] January 31, 2014
This being said, I have to admit I am excited to see the Seahawks heading to the Super Bowl. Now, before you begin yelling “Bandwagon!” let me explain myself. I was born and raised here and am a Pacific Northwest girl to the core. I expect gray skies nine months out of the year, label anyone walking around with an umbrella a tourist and consider two Starbucks stores located across the street from each other normal (a year of living in Idaho taught me that the latter is definitely NOT normal outside the Evergreen State). And as a PNW girl, I’ve grown used to the fact that this area is not exactly known for sports. Science and technology? Sure. But if you’re looking for a sports powerhouse, you’ll have better luck looking elsewhere. So the significance of one of our teams heading to the Big Game is not lost on even me, the football illiterate.
Everywhere you go around here, it’s Seahawks: The 12th Man flag flies over local government buildings and area landmarks; almost every other car on the road is sporting some sort of bumper sticker or flag; cities, schools and businesses have designated “Blue” days and many businesses are offering “12th Man” specials on their various services and products. If that weren’t enough, every time I log on to social media, my feeds explode with blue and green. With the entire state supporting the Seahawks, it’s hard not to take even a cursory interest in the team. It’s been building up all season and now it’s here: The Seahawks are going to the Super Bowl! And while I could watch the game in full and still have no clue what’s happening, I’ll be pulling for our guys to bring home a “W” just as hard as any die-hard fan. Go Hawks!

Reaction to Mayor Murray threats Many are like Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, who has chosen a passion that seems to
conflict with what our government teaches. (On Jan. 24, the Reporter ran a story about Mitchell Taylor posting threatening and anti-gay messages on Murray’s Facebook page.) A long time ago, the government passed a law to teach children evolution that man evolved from an ape, or an animal. As children, we learned about animals. It is common knowledge that if you put two roosters together they would fight to kill each other. Actually, if you put the two roosters on the opposite side of a large meadow, they would run across it to fight to kill each other unless they had enough chickens to share. If you put two chickens to live in the same cage, one would dominate the other, taking from the other, until the other weakens maybe even to death. Ask any farmer what would happen if two bulls are put in the same barn? The bulls would try to kill each other. Now the government has passed a new law that same-sex marriage is acceptable. It seems obvious that the new law is inappropriate for the animal kingdom and maybe also inappropriate for the human race since the government teaches we came from animals. For those who have preserved their passions to be similar to the animal kingdom, this new law conflicts with evolution, and may aggravate them. Maybe Taylor is aggravated by the government’s conflicting laws that do not agree. But then, if humans live only for their passion, there is a void. Many humans change their passions to try to fill a void. But the new passion does not fill the void, either. Humans need to realize the void can only be filled by the originator of life. We all win with Sen. Hill Why we should be thankful for Sen. Andy Hill: As the author of the budget for the state senate, Andy has added $1 billion to the budget for K-12 education. This is the budget that 89 percent of our legislators adopted. Yes, 89 percent including the Democrat legislators. Every teacher and school age child in the state should be thankful. He blocked the requested (and consistently granted in the past) tuition increases for secondary education. Every college student (and their parents) in the state should be thankful. He balanced the budget without gimmicks or tax increases. Every taxpayer in the state should be thankful. He has set our state budget on a course to have a very well-funded rainy day fund within a couple of years instead of being in constant danger of being broke. We, all the people of Washington state, should be thankful that we have Andy Hill in the state senate. As chairman for the 45th Legislative District Republicans, I am biased. However, there is no bias needed to recognize the simple reality of what Andy has done for the people of this state. No spin is needed when the facts speak for themselves. The Democrat Party needs to have someone on the ballot and this is their opponent to Andy. He is completely untested as a representative of the public. But why would anyone give up a proven leader who has so ably and successfully represented us? Voters need to take a look at the facts and they will quickly recognize that we all win with Andy Hill representing us.

Rockwell Elementary needs modernization I am a mother of two kids in the Lake Washington School District (LWSD). I’m writing in support of the LWSD levies and bond measures. I want quality instruction for my children and future students in modern buildings that can handle tomorrow’s technical and educational needs. My home elementary school, Norman Rockwell Elementary, has been dealing with an overcrowding issue (currently at 17 percent over enrollment capacity), which can potentially hinder student development and safety at the school. Enrollment is expected to climb throughout the school year as new families move into our area, and as new housing developments, our neighboring elementary schools in the district face the same overcrowding issues. Overcrowding has an impact on everyone in the school, students, teachers, staff and parents. From classroom size, increased
parking lot traffic to increased complexity in managing whole school transitions such as recess, lunchroom and general assemblies, no activity is left unaffected. Here are just a few examples of how overcrowding could potentially impact student development and safety at the school. • While max class sizes are governed by district rules and teacher contracts, growing enrollment frequently leads to cases where class sizes are pushed above the targets. • Last year, third grade was in this situation with 33 students in a class and this year some of our second grade classes have up to 28 students currently. • More children to be monitored on the playground and before and after school. • Overcrowding leads to increased use of portables; the use of portables is becoming more commonplace in our school district. Currently 20 percent of the Rockwell student population is housed in five portables. Portables provide sub-standard classroom conditions including no water, poor ventilation and in three out of the five Rockwell portables, no air conditioning. Temperatures can reach up to the mid-80s on a warm day and remain stuffy throughout the year. • Recent security changes at the school also mean students housed in portables have limited access to restrooms in the main building as keys are now required to access the building from the portables. • Insufficient space for physical education classes — we have two gym classes at a time in our gymnasium. Additionally, Rockwell is long overdue for modernization. As the bond measure in 2008 did not pass, Rockwell has continued to provide the best education it can for it students, yet changes in teaching over time lead to the need to change learning spaces to support appropriately the education program and process. If the bond measure does not pass, our schools will continue to be overcrowded, the use of portables will increase and school boundaries will likely be changed. This will affect real estate values and will impact the overall quality of the community. Please vote to approve the three LWSD measures. Our Education Hill area needs a new school to accommodate the new housing developments and current overcrowding in the area, as well as modernize Rockwell Elementary.

taking place for better part of a year. The district has involved and engaged our community in developing solutions to our communities’ growth and answered the questions and critiques. For some, the temptation is to say “no” now because they believe the plan is not perfect. An insistence on perfect often means to little or nothing gets done at all and perfection becomes the enemy of the good. We need to move our schools out of the impending crisis of far too few classrooms for far too many students. A good plan today is far and away better than a more perfect plan put off forever. LWSD has a very, very good plan for us today. We need move forward with the plan now to protect the future. We vote on that future on Feb. 11. Propositions 1 and 2 renewal levies address our operational needs the next four years. The Proposition 3 bond is very well aligned to invest in the infrastructure our communities need over the next eight years and beyond. The bonds will enable the district to build six new schools to accommodate tremendous growth and to modernize or replace five existing schools in Phase III of the updated 1998 modernization plan. I will be voting yes on all three of our school district’s funding propositions and I encourage all my fellow community members to do the same — vote yes three times for investing in our communities’ futures.

— select one community over another? Pursuing that answer always brings the value of the education system into focus. The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) is a high-performing education system, well regarded for helping our children prepare for tomorrow. We recognize the dependency of a hightech, global economy upon a sustainable outstanding public education system. Educating our children across Redmond, Kirkland and Sammamish, the LWSD is without question a core, essential partner in achieving economic diversity and sustainability. We must presume our region will continue to compete in a global economy with countries that are hungry to grow and succeed, and which continue to heavily invest in their education systems. We have to ask ourselves, are we really still hungry enough to succeed? Do we want to be a community that is chosen in which to build businesses and create jobs for the long term? The city councils and business chambers of Redmond, Kirkland and Sammamish all answered that question by endorsing the three school funding propositions on the Feb. 11 ballot. Our community needs to have a competitive education system if we want to compete in the world far beyond our community borders. Wanting a prosperous and sustainable local economy may seem like a luxury to some, but when communities have a need — and ours needs a consistently and continuously high-performing education system — we find the way to make it happen. As an advanced and successful society, we have always taxed ourselves to build the infrastructure we need to create the next opportunity. This is a collective decision to tax ourselves for the things we need, not just simply want, but need. As parents, we invest and sacrifice to educate our children to prepare them to enter adulthood as productive members of our community — to be prepared for their next stage. As a community, we have to take the same care in ensuring our community is prepared for the future we promise our children. If we are not prepared, if our schools are not prepared, then people and the people who build business and run enterprises will select other communities that better fulfill their needs for the future. LWSD’s goals and solutions align with our community vision. The community should ask hard questions and should be able to critique the school district plans. That critical inquiry has been

At Monday’s meeting, the Lake Washington School District Board of Directors approved a temporary boundary change for next fall that assigns new housing developments currently within the attendance boundaries of Rockwell and Einstein elementary schools to Mann Elementary School. All three schools are located in Redmond. The changes will be in effect through the 2015-16 school year. The bond measure currently on the Feb.
11 ballot would fund three new elementary schools in the district to accommodate growing enrollment. Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce made this recommendation because projections for enrollment at Rockwell and Einstein over the next two years exceed the maximum capacity of both schools, reads a press release. A temporary boundary committee had been asked to develop potential scenarios for moving students, which were shared with the public in an open house at Redmond Middle School on Jan. 22. The committee selected a preferred scenario, using the input they received at the open house. They presented that recommendation to Dr. Pierce on Jan.

23. Dr. Pierce in turn made her recommendation to the board, which unanimously adopted the recommendation. The change will reassign all homes from the following new developments from Rockwell and Einstein to Mann: From Rockwell to Mann: Betrozoff Plat, Brookside at the Woodlands, Chablis, Cryder, Greystone Manor, Strom Property, Verona Phase II, Vistas at Mondavio Phase II and other newly initiated developments. From Einstein to Mann: Bear Creek Apartments, Bear Creek Cottages, Beuca Plat, Federspiel Property, Glenshire Division 2 and 3, Hawthorne Lane, Shadow Creek, Thorn Short Plat, Willowmere Park, Wyndham Ridge and other newly initiated developments. Should any families with students move into the above developments during the current school year, they will be allowed to attend Mann to prevent a second transition in the fall. These changes do not affect any students currently attending Rockwell or Einstein.

Also at the meeting were members of Energize Eastside’s Citizen Advisory Group (CAG), which is made up of 26 individuals representing the communities affected by the project. Pete Sullivan, a senior
planner for the City of Redmond, is one of three people representing Redmond on the CAG. When asked about what Energize Eastside will mean for the city, he said this will help them keep up with the growth planned as they work to realize the vision of two urban centers — in downtown and Overlake — in Redmond. Because Energize Eastside is still in its early stages, Sullivan said the CAG is still in the process of finding out the project’s construction impacts and
other details. Robert Shay, president of the Wilburton Community Association in Bellevue, is also on the CAG. He said he got involved in the project because it is important for citizens to step up and be involved if they want their thoughts and opinions to be heard. Shay said getting involved is also more than just saying, “Not in my back yard.” “Citizen input is also learning what (the project) is and giving thoughtful input, educational input,” he said.

company’s strong technology portfolio and client base, coupled with HCL’s robust system integration capabilities will be a formidable combination in the application modernization market,” said HCL President and CEO Anant Gupta. “Application modernization forms the first phase of HCL’s Digital System Integration strategy. Enterprises today view digitalization as a route to business model transformation. Organizations have not been able to accrue the potential benefits from digitalization, as they are shackled by legacy technologies.” Mike Lawrie, CSC’s president and CEO added, “Our strategic partnership with HCL is a new and innovative approach to delivering next-generation IT services, which enable enterprises to achieve greater operational agility and significant reductions to operating costs. I think the whole Puget Sound area is just really standing behind the Seahawks.” What sets this team apart from the 2005-06 Hawks that lost in the Super Bowl? “It’s very different since the last time when we were with the Steelers,” Emsley said. “There’s just a different buzz about it. I just think that the team has so much chemistry.” Emsley said that while Seahawks fans rule the roost on the Ben Franklin store’s employee roster, there is one Denver Broncos fan who works there.

HIALEAH, FL – An ingredient often used to treat inflammation in racehorse legs is now back on the market in its original doctor recommended clinical strength formula. According to a national drug survey, the formula at one time became so popular that it rose to the top of pharmacy sales for topical pain relievers. But the company marketing the product at the time changed the formula and sales plummeted. One of the inventors of the original formula has brought it back under the trade name ARTH ARREST and
says it can relieve pain for millions. ARTH ARREST works by a dual mechanism whereby one ingredient relieves pain immediately, while a second ingredient seeks out and destroys the pain messenger signal before it can be sent to the brain. Considered a medical miracle by some, ARTH ARREST is useful in the treatment of a variety of painful disorders. ARTH ARREST is available without a prescription or call 877-581-1502. Now at:

On one side of the post sat an inflatable referee punching bag, which may be useful on Sunday. Among the Seahawks items, floating on a string, was a lonely Broncos helmet. “We do have some Denver fans in town and we want to be fair to all of our guests. They can’t help it if they’re from Denver,” Malcham said with a laugh. They’re having a good time at Everything Party, Malcham said as she waved good-bye to a customer and yelled, “Go Hawks!” As she exited the store, Teri Henninger held up her bag of green and blue beads that she just purchased. Sporting a 12th Man jersey and a lime green undershirt, the lifelong Seattle sports fan has easily made the transition from baseball to football season. “Mariners suck, so why not go with the Seahawks?” Henninger said.
“It’s been a lot of fun and it’s united the whole area,” she continued. “I volunteer over at Overlake Hospital and so I wore my stuff there today with their permission. (I got) lots of happy comments. People smiling (and saying) ‘Go Hawks’ and one ‘God Bless You.’” ***** On the food front, Redmond resident and chef John Howie and former Seahawk Craig Terrill will participate in Taste of the NFL’s 23rd annual “Party with a Purpose,” a strolling wine and food event on Saturday in Brooklyn, N.Y. When he moved to Colorado, he remained a Cowboy fan and “kind of supported the Broncos from a distance.” Now, he’s all about Seattle. There will be an open enrollment period from Feb. 3-28 for families who are interested in in-district transfers to attend schools within the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) other than their neighborhood schools. Applying during this period may result in learning the outcome of a request earlier. These transfers are possible only if space is available. Because of the growing student population in the district, fewer schools can accommodate students from outside their neighborhood boundaries. The closed school list for the 2014-15 school year will be posted on the district website as of Feb. 3. Families are asked to review that list before applying for an in-district transfer. Call (425) 9361283 for more information.
