Peeples, the captain of the RFD team, said its goal is to raise $7,500 and as of Tuesday morning, they have raised $6,245. RFD had six firefighters in addition to Peeples participate in the climb: Jeff Fuller and Michael Waite — who are both firefighters and paramedics — and Mark Williams, Dave Cobb, Luke Beaty and John Simon — all of whom are firefighters and EMTs. The team’s top fundraiser so far is Fuller, who has brought in $3,105. The minimum amount for each firefighter to raise to participate in the climb is $300. Landing provided shelter, hope for Atkins SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com
When Brandon Atkins first arrived in Seattle last summer, it was supposed to be for a vacation. But when all of his belongings were stolen from his hostel room his first day in the city, he soon found himself homeless — his only possessions being what he had in his pockets at that time. The 23-year-old from Minnesota did a Google search for “How to be homeless” and came across

For 11 years, Josh Peeples has participated in the annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb at the Columbia Tower in Seattle. Despite having done the 69-flight climb for more than a decade, the Redmond Fire Department (RFD) firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT) is still as hooked on the event as he was when he did his first climb at the age of 19 as a volunteer firefighter. The stairclimb, which celebrated its 23rd year on Sunday, is a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) with money going toward three areas: research, patient care and advocacy. In addition to climbing up the Columbia Tower’s 69 flights of stairs (1,311 steps), participants wear about 50 pounds of firefighting gear. “You’re swearing to yourself the whole time,” Peeples said with a laugh about the climb’s difficulty, pointing out that if firefighters were to wear all of their gear for the climb, it would weigh twice as much. Despite how difficult the climb may be, he said once you get to the top of the tower, you “can’t wait till next year.”

Resident concerned about mail theft from overflowing collection box Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com
On March 5, Education Hill resident Joanna Pine came across an overflowing mailbox in the Bella Bottega parking lot. Courtesy of Joanna Pine
About a week and a half ago, Joanna Pine drove to the Bella Bottega shopping complex in downtown Redmond to drop something off at one of the blue outgo-

ing United States Postal Service (USPS) mailboxes. But when she got there, she found she couldn’t send out her mail because the box was already full. “I could reach my hand in there and pull mail out,” she said about how overflowing the mailbox was. “I went back the next day and it was even fuller.” Pine, an Education Hill resident, became concerned about the potential theft issues that could rise from the situation so she called the Redmond Post Office but it was after hours and could not reach anyone. She then contacted the Redmond Police Department (RPD). She stayed until the police arrived. “I just felt bad because this is other people’s mail,” Pine said about not wanting to leave the mailbox
unguarded. After receiving Pine’s call, RPD contacted the Redmond Post Office to notify them of what was going on and urge them to handle the issue as soon as possible. Ernie Swanson, spokesperson for USPS’s Seattle district, said when the post office received the call and sent someone out to check on the mailbox, there was no overflow. “The boxes are emptied twice a day,” he said. He added that there are seven mail collection boxes in Redmond’s 98052 zip code. They are located at the following addresses: 16700 N.E. 79th St.; 7349 164th Ave. N.E.; 15800 Redmond Way; 15955 N.E. 85th St.; 8703 160th Ave. N.E.; 8867 161st Ave. N.E. and 17667 N.E. 76th St.

Swanson said he wasn’t sure when they received the call, so it may not have been the same day Pine found the mailbox overflowing. As for reasons why the box was overflowing, he said it could have been that it was too full that day. It also could have been that someone tried to send a large package, which then got jammed at the top of the box. Swanson pointed out that the blue mailboxes are designed to only take in letters and flat envelopes. “It’s not meant for boxes and that sort of thing,” he said. Julie Beard, a neighborhood resource officer for RPD, said if people come across an overflowing mailbox, the first thing they should do is not put any more mail in it as that adds to the problem and will expose people to the risk of mail theft. People should then do as Pine did and notify the USPS. If they can’t reach anyone, Beard said contacting the police can help with the process. She said she has spoken with the Redmond Post Office supervisor, who said the office is staffed overnight. “I haven’t tried calling after hours lately, but the supervisor advised they do have the staffing to respond immediately for situations like this,” Beard said. As for what police are able to do, she said they typically try to respect the post office and their regulations on handling mail. “There are a few reasons, including the fact that many people don’t want the police to be anywhere near their private correspondence, and we respect that,” Beard said. “We also want to obey federal laws that restrict who can handle mail.” Swanson said USPS will be checking on the mailbox in question more often to monitor the situation, and if they do notice that it is overflowing on a regular basis, they will up the collections to three times a day. Pine stressed the importance of USPS doing its due diligence and addressing this issue as people use the collection box to send things such as bills and personal letters. “Everybody’s going to be affected by it (if it is not addressed),” she said.

Legislators need to invest in STEM education
Patrick D’Amelio
Washington’s many technology employers are hungry for qualified workers, from software engineers at Microsoft’s campus in Redmond to the folks who install and maintain the systems that keep buildings running in downtown Spokane to nuclear physicists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland to agricultural workers in Yakima Valley. The entrepreneurial spirit and drive to innovate that built those employers and thousands of others in Washington produce hundreds of thousands of good, well-paid jobs that support families around our state. But although we rank first in the nation for creating jobs that require STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills, we’re not doing a good job of preparing and inspiring the next generation to compete for those good-paying jobs, which range from requiring a strong high school education, technical certificate to a wide range of postsecondary degrees. That forces our companies to recruit from elsewhere and leaves our own kids on the outside looking in. The good news is we’re working on changing this. Last year, the Washington Legislature took a big step to improve STEM education. By passing a bill put forward on behalf of Gov. Jay Inslee, lawmakers mandated a results-driven approach to improving STEM teaching and learning throughout Washington. The new law gives us an opportunity to lead in STEM education, using innovations and best practices However, faced with last year’s tough budget climate, lawmakers did not allocate any state money to support this effort. Gov. Inslee’s proposed supplemental budget for this year allocates $1 million to fuel this essential work for the next year. The current budget proposal from the state Senate maintains that vital

support, which is an important first step in investing alongside the private sector. The state House’s version currently does not include those resources, and we urge lawmakers in that chamber to support them in the upcoming negotiations over the final version of the spending plan. Some will argue that lawmakers have bigger problems to tackle on education funding: The state Supreme Court’s has mandated that the state spend more satisfy its constitutional requirement to provide basic education to all Washington school children. But we shouldn’t choose on over the other. In Washington’s technology-drive 21st century economy, STEM education IS basic education as evidenced by places like the STEM High School in Redmond. The jobs of the future will require STEM skills. Even jobs that required few STEM skills in the past now require many, and will need even more in the future. Also, these dollars will yield a high return, by ramping up Washington STEM’s efforts to support the growing number of regional STEM networks around the state and make competitive investments to improve STEM education. The STEM networks will help educators work
with STEM professionals in their regions, bringing professionals into classrooms and students into STEM workplaces through internships and other programs. Successful programs in Clark County and Spokane are already encouraging students to take the STEM courses they need for good jobs, and training potential workers for local businesses. Meanwhile, Washington STEM is supporting pilot programs around the state to bring cutting-edge teacher-training practices to Washington classrooms. The state’s investment could help spread this work throughout Washington. Washington’s future is STEM. The state’s students need the training for tomorrow’s jobs. And the state’s employers need tomorrow’s workers. As a state, let’s invest together to ensure opportunities for future generations of Washingtonians. Patrick D’Amelio is chief executive officer of Washington STEM, a statewide nonprofit. Washington STEM held its second annual STEM Summit last December at Microsoft. More than 300 participants, which included educators, students, businesses and community leaders, attended the event.

Why I vote ‘no’ on the LWSD bond measure Recently, the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) put up for a vote two levy measures and one bond measure requesting more money for the district. The levy measures passed, however, the bond measure failed. Per an email from LWSD Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce and the school board members and information on the district webpage, a survey was conducted of 400 residents in the district to ascertain why the bond measure failed. As I was not one of the residents contacted, I thought I would explain my particular reasons for voting “no” on the bond measure. I have lived in Redmond for more than 30 years and three of my four children have graduated from Redmond High School (RHS); my
fourth child is a freshman this year at RHS. My husband is also a graduate of RHS. Over the past 10-plus years, I have watched as the district has repeatedly asked for more and more money to fund building projects to “modernize” aging buildings and build new schools. My belief is that the district has used these funds in less than effectual ways and with dreadful results. • Horace Mann Elementary was demolished and rebuilt in 2003 with two fewer classrooms than the original building. This fall it will house four portables due to the overflow of students from Rockwell Elementary. • Redmond Junior High (now middle school) was demolished and rebuilt in 2002 with the same number of classrooms as the original building. It now houses three portables.
• RHS has been rebuilt several times; in 1985 and in 2003. A gym and additional classroom building was added in 2012 along with two portables. An additional two portables were added in the summer of 2013. • Lake Washington High School was modernized in 2011. The failed bond measure requested funds to add more classroom space for projected student population of 2,000 students by 2021. The above are just four examples of how the district has failed to project the need for classrooms and plan for student growth within a 10-year span; let alone the 30 to 40 years that school buildings are expected to last. LWSD receives many awards for its academic proficiency, and it stands to reason that many families will want to move within the district
to take advantage of these programs. In addition, Redmond and other areas within the district are still experiencing tremendous housing growth, including multi- and single-family houses in most areas. Older residents are moving out and their residences filled with families — many with more than one child. I voted “no” on the bond measure because I believe the district has used previous funds in a negligent and wasteful manner. I will vote “no” again in April because I do not believe the district’s plans for the new bond funds are any different.

‘Odysseo’ horses get friendly with sight-impaired children Andy Nystrom anystrom@redmond-reporter.com
Judah Kobernik,3, tries on a horseshoe as Pompon stands in the background at Wednesday’s hands-on sensory tour for sight-impaired children with “Odysseo” horses, trainers and performers at Marymoor Park. andy nystrom, Redmond Reporter
Dorian Escalon smiled, patted his chest and noted that there’s a special bond between horses and children. The 21-year-old performer in Cavalia’s “Odysseo” is close with the horses he rides under the White Big Top at Marymoor Park, but the ponytailed Escalon saw friendship taken to a new level when the children from the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library spent time in the stables and training tent on Wednesday afternoon. “They are so innocent inside them,” Escalon said of the kids who are sight impaired. “You can see the horse kind of give everything to them.” He likened the interaction to a dog cuddling up to its owner. Escalon, who hails from Spain, added: “Horses really have a lot of feelings and they’re really feeling the energy of the people — everything which you have
inside. If you are scared, if you are stressed, if you are happy.” There were 11 ecstatic children on hand during the 90-minute event, which featured petting and feeding horses, sitting on saddles and finally, standing in a group as six horses and their riders circled around them. The horses started to walk slowly, but then the riders got them moving at about 30 mph, treating the kids and their parents to an intimate equine experience. After the horses completed their show and moved to the side of the tent, 9-yearold John from Bremerton gladly took a seat to discuss the hands-on sensory tour. “It was really interesting and I will come back tonight (for the show),” said John, whose last name was withheld for privacy reasons. He added that his favorite part was when the horses picked up their speed during the finale. Jesper Ford, 11, of Renton enjoyed everything
about the event, including standing on a saddle as Escalon discussed his trick-riding segment during the show. Jesper’s mother, Debi, said that it’s vital for the kids to feel and smell the horses and get up close with the equine. “They get to be important and feel a part of it. I think a lot of times, kids like this end up sitting in the back or listening to what’s going on,” Debi said. “I know one boy had his face up to (the horse) and I’m sure he could feel the ‘whoosh’ (of its breath).” Forrest Neander, 13, who has limited vision and cerebral palsy, took a few minutes before he interacted with the horse who strolled up to his wheelchair. The Shoreline resident waved his left hand, tapped the horse and smiled. “It seemed like something just clicked for him and he just really enjoyed it. He realized that he had this horse right next to him
and he was really engaging with it. I love to see it when Forrest really responds like that and with so much joy,” said his mother Julia. Danielle Miller and Mandy Gonnsen, director and youth services librarian, respectively, of the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library surveyed the scene at the training tent and were pleased with how they and Cavalia came together to give the kids a stellar day out with the horses. Miller said the event allowed the kids “to use all their senses and access information that another child might be able to get simply by watching.” Gonnsen added: “I think the families are really excited to be here. Being able to connect with Cavalia and the horses, but also being able to connect with each other.” • “Odysseo” runs through March 30 at Marymoor Park.

A recent partnership with Genie in Redmond has given students at STEM High School in Redmond first-hand experience in tackling real-world problems. The 16 students who were part of the school’s fall internship program presented their work Wednesday afternoon to school staff and district administration as well as parents and Ron DeFeo, CEO of Terex, Genie’s parent company. The students were tasked to design and build a scale model of a solar light tower that could be used on a construction site. There were four teams with four students each, led by engineers from Genie. While the students were assigned the same project, each team was given specific requirements to meet such as geographic locations where the light tower would be used or having the light tower being partially powered by diesel fuel. In addition to meeting these requirements, the teams also had to do it all within a $9,000 budget. In some cases, the students realized the requirements they were given were impossible to meet so they either had to find a solution or renegotiate the terms so they could meet them. “And that’s OK,” DeFeo told the students after their presentations. While the students learned many technical skills during the project, they said there were also
more general skills they gained from the experience such as teamwork, time management, delegating responsibilities, utilizing people’s abilities and more. The students also expressed their gratitude for the Genie employees and their help. “(And for) believing in us even when we didn’t believe in ourselves,” said junior Hana Keller. The students weren’t the only ones to learn from the internship program. Co-lead Raj Nand from Genie said the adults did as well, admitting that they did not know what they were getting into and before this, did not know much about solar power either. “I think we can say we

In particular, she said, they get a lot of firefighters from the surrounding states of Oregon, Idaho, Montana and California. The event also brings in people from all over the world. Daniels said in the last eight years, they have had firefighters from as far as Europe, South
America and New Zealand, adding that the New Zealand contingent has even started their own stairclimbing event back home. “It’s amazing,” she said about the support they have received from the out-ofstate and out-of-country firefighters. She added that in addition to raising money to participate, these firefighters also have to pay for their own travel expenses, which makes it really exciting to see them take part.
DOING SOMETHING THAT MATTERS
Peeples, who has been part of the RFD team since he joined the department in 2007 and captain for three years, said with a room full of firefighters — about 1,800 this year — things can get a bit competitive among the participants. “Every second counts,” he said, adding that some firefighters will train by wearing their gear on hikes or a stairclimber machine. But all the competition

While the event may be competitive for some, for others, there is a deeper meaning. “My dad died of leukemia, so it’s a cause that’s near and dear to my heart,” Simon said about the climb. The RFD firefighter and EMT participated in the climb several years before and said this year was the most difficult for him. But for him, it’s more about the fundraising than the racing. So far, Simon is in second place among the RFD team, bringing in $1,555 for the cause. Simon said while he climbs, he thinks about his father, Lee Simon, and about trying to keep breathing and keep on moving forward.

Homeownership is often decided based on the simple formula of income versus the cost of housing. In the past two years, increasing real estate values combined with increasing interest rates are outpacing the growth in income for average homebuyers. This affects how much home one can afford. Homebuyers have to pay more to get what they want, or see themselves priced out of the market to buyers with stronger financial assets. An alternative for those whose buying power creates certain limitations on the Eastside are ARCH (A Regional Coalition for Housing) properties. ARCH has been created as a coalition of Eastside cities to plan for development that would include new housing for families with middle to low income. These single-family homes and condominiums are sold to buyers that meet a certain income criteria at or below market values with covenants in place to allow future owners to buy on similar terms. Eliminating investors and better financially positioned buyers, allows those qualifying for

www.redmond-reporter.com Atkins shared his story at FOY’s Celebration of Youth last Friday, an annual event to raise money for the nonprofit, at The Westin Bellevue. FOY has been operating for 63 years and FOY President and CEO Terry Pottmeyer said their goal was to raise $200,000, which would go toward the organization’s operations. FOY is still in the process of tallying up how much they received in donations. Atkins said that his aunt and uncle, who he had been staying with in Minnesota — along with two cousins — could not afford to send money so he could go home. “I was stuck,” Atkins told the Reporter in an email. “I had wanted to see Seattle. I guess my wish was granted.” He said Landing staff helped him by providing meals and a place to shower, receive mail and apply for jobs. After a few months of staying at the Landing, Atkins now has a small studio apartment near Seattle’s International District and has started his parttime job at Einstein Bros Bagels.
“After a summer of saving I’ll have enough to pay for a couple college classes and I’ll enroll at (South Seattle Community College),” he said. At Friday’s event, Pottmeyer said FOY has “grown a great deal since (its) founding in 1951” and that growth has been motivated and accomplished as FOY has responded to the needs of the community. And that need is great as the organization serves more than 4,800 young people and their families per year, Pottmeyer said. “Each child’s success has been a triumph,” she said. FOY board member Jeane Buchanan said Celebration of Youth is their largest fundraising opportunity of the year and
raises awareness about youth homelessness. It was through such events that she learned more about the issues. She said having grown up on the Eastside, she never understood the magnitude before this. Buchanan joined the FOY board of directors about three and a half years ago and said many people she talks to at fundraising events are just like her and surprised to hear that homelessness is an issue on the Eastside. “We need to get the word out that it is a community issue,” she said. Community was a common theme among those who spoke at Friday’s event. Adrienne Quinn, director of King County’s Department of Community and Human
Services, was the afternoon’s keynote speaker and focused on how the outcome of a person’s life depends on caring communities. “It takes all of us,” she told the audience. “Together, this community is transforming lives, sometimes saving lives.” For Atkins, it was the FOY community that helped him get his life back on track. “It was a good support system for me since I didn’t have anything re-
ally and nowhere to go,” he said. In addition to the help received during his tough times, Atkins said he learned a lot from his experience. One of the most important lessons was to not to run from his problems, which was what he was doing when he came to the Pacific Northwest. “Look where that got me,” he said. Atkins also learned to be humble and stay focused on what he
wanted. “I found myself in the very last place I thought I was ever going to be, and for each day I sat around and moped about my situation, it was a day longer I would remain in my situation,” he said. “If I could give any advice it would be to stay focused. Stay focused on where you want to go. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, kicking yourself, but don’t. It only makes things worse.”
