After the mudslide hit Oso the morning of March 22, communities throughout Washington as well as the nation have found ways to pitch in and help the communities that have been affected. Redmond is no different.

Ex-Microsoft worker pleads guilty to theft of trade secrets ANDY NYSTROM anystrom@redmond-reporter.com
Former Microsoft Corp. employee Alex Kibkalo pleaded guilty on Monday in United States District Court in Seattle to leaking confidential company information to a technology blogger in July and August 2012. Kibkalo was charged last month with theft of trade secrets after uploading pre-release software updates for Windows 8 RT and ARM devices, as well as Microsoft’s Activation Software Development Kit (SDK), according to charging documents.
Monday’s plea agreement notes that prosecutors agreed to recommend that Kibkalo serve three months in federal prison and pay Microsoft $22,500, with credit for any amounts already paid. Kibkalo, who is currently in custody, is scheduled to be sentenced July 1 by U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, according to a court executive / clerk. Microsoft’s investigation revealed instant messaging conversations on Kibkalo’s Hotmail account between Kibkalo and the blogger discussing transferring data between themselves,
Kibkalo leaking the information as well as discussions about how they might get caught, charging papers read. In response to the news coverage about the Kibkalo case, Microsoft’s Brad Smith released a post, “We’re listening: Additional steps to protect your privacy,” on March 28 on the company’s blog. “Over the past week, we’ve had the opportunity to reflect further on this issue, and as a result of conversations we’ve had internally and with advocacy groups and other experts, we’ve [ more THEFT page 2 ]
In addition to the firefighters, Newman said one OEM staff member was deployed the day of the mudslide as a Red Cross shelter volunteer. “She put in a couple shifts,” she said Newman said she does not know the specifics of what the staff member has been doing, but typically, shelter volunteers help people who may be looking for loved ones, in need of a warm
drink or somewhere to stay the night or other needs. In some cases, people have lost all of their belongings, so the shelter volunteers’ jobs are to make people as comfortable as possible. Newman said with an incident of this size, there is usually an emergency operations center set up, which is a room full of people on phones and computers working to get [ more OSO page 3 ]
Citizens perform CPR on driver after heart attack, help save a life STAFF REPORT
A 59-year-old man had a heart attack while driving along Avondale Road Northeast at 10:32 a.m. on March 30. Due to the quick response of four community members and their ability to provide CPR until firefighters arrived, the Redmond man is alive today and recovering in a local hospital. The four citizens initiating CPR before Redmond police and firefighters arrived on the scene significantly increased the victim’s chances of survival. “Four citizens helped saved a life because they were CPR trained; this gave him a fighting chance and made [ more CPR page 2 ]

Currently, three City of Redmond firefighters are at the site of the mudslide helping with search efforts as they are Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urban search-andrescue (US&R) trained. They were deployed March 24. Debbie Newman with Redmond’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) said US&R individuals have a lot of additional, specialized training and usually help with building collapses from earthquakes or other natural disasters. She said they also have specialized equipment such as cameras that can fit into small areas that could

SUPPLIES AS NEEDED
While the City of Redmond is providing services — or ready to provide services — to the mudslide relief efforts, Medical Teams International (MTI) in Redmond has supplied the Oso community with 300 hygiene kits. Each kit contains a bar of soap, washcloth and a toothbrush as well as toothpaste, shampoo and a comb or brush. Angela Pratt, communications and marketing manager for MTI, said the kits came from MTI’s Redmond location as well as its international headquarters in Tigard, Ore. The supplies for the kits, she said, are collected throughout the year and typically, the kits are distributed to area social service agencies. But in an emergency situation such as the Oso mudslide, communities will request kits from MTI. Pratt said they received requests for 300 hygiene kits for the mudslide relief efforts and will send more if they receive another request. “We respond when asked to come,” she said, adding that MTI is not collecting any sort of cash donations at this time.

HEALING ARTS
In addition, local Nia dance instructors have held benefit dance classes that were donation based, with the money going toward the mudslide relief efforts. Pauline Osborne, an instructor from Redmond, held a benefit class Saturday morning at DanceWorks Studio in Redmond.
She had held donationbased classes for the last month with the idea of the funds to go toward class expenses, but after the mudslide, she decided to take that money — about $50 since the classes were pretty small — and added it to the pool of money collected during her class on Saturday. The total collected, including the past month’s donations, was $560. Osborne is donating the money to United Way of Snohomish County. She said she was surprised and gracious with how much people donated — one person gave $100 and another gave $200 — especially since they only had two days’ notice. “They just wanted to give and here was the opportunity,” Osborne said, adding that a little more than a dozen people attended the class. The idea to hold benefit classes came from Randee

mond community is coming together to do its part is by raising money. In response to the disaster, St. Jude Catholic Church in Redmond initially wrote a $1,000 check to the Catholic Community Services of Snohomish County. Sister Betty Schumacher, pastoral associate for St. Jude, said the money will go toward local churches that serve the Oso area, which include St. John Vianney in Darrington and Immaculate Conception Church in Arlington. The money will be used however local parishioners choose in reaching out to the community. Schumacher said part of the funds will also go toward covering funeral expenses. Currently, the St. Jude website, www.stjuderedmond.org, features a link to donate directly to Catholic Community Services. Schumacher said there is no way to keep track of where the money is coming from or how much one community has contributed on the website. To raise more money for the cause, she said St. Jude will take up an actual collection during this weekend’s services. Hopelink, a human services agency in Redmond, is also doing what it can to help those affected by the mudslide. Spokesperson Kris Betker said the organization’s designation as a community action agency restricts their service to north and east King County. The only exception is transportation as Hopelink has a partnership with the state’s Department of Social and

Fox, a Nia faculty trainer and black belt instructor. She said she was really sad when she heard the news of the mudslide and needed to do something. So she created a logo to go with the benefit classes, saying sometimes it helps to have a visual. Fox held three benefit classes at the Blue Heron Ranch Studio in Sammamish over the last weekend, bringing in $1,000, which will go toward the American Red Cross. She said in less than a week, 11 benefit dance classes were held throughout the Puget Sound area, raising almost $2,500 for mudslide relief efforts. I’m all for financially sound investments in school facilities and personnel (The following column is a response to Jill Stoddart’s column last issue, “Who is behind the antischools lobby?”)
GUEST COLUMN
Steven Swedenburg
First of all, I am not antischool just anti-waste and mismanagement. I am all for financially sound investments in facilities and personnel that is prudent. If you really believe “it’s for the children,” then why bury them in debt unnecessarily? The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) is spending two to three times the cost for similar buildings compared to the Monroe School District. Stay on point, be adult enough to not attack someone asking for clarification of the facts. And, seriously, just where did you get the oneroom schoolhouse with a wood stove? This is the best you have to offer? The $404 million bond must be paid with tax dollars, the number of 25 cents per $1,000 assessed value is incorrect. For example, assume 5 percent interest on a $404 million bond over 20 years. The interest payments will be $20 million the first year and $10 million the following 19 years. This comes to $210 million to service a $404 million bond. This interest rate cannot be serviced at anything less than $8 million a year over 20 years, that would be $210 million. That does not include the loan, just the debt service. AAA bonds are 3.75 percent,
Goodbye to a city that has embraced and treated me like family When I started with the Redmond Reporter in February 2010, I had no idea what a great city Redmond was. From the very first day I started, the business community in Redmond has opened their hearts to me and it has been just like a family. I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment I have spent working in this great city. Our readers are loyal and it has been so much fun being in the community for special events where I have been able to

I’m so proud of the work these two do in producing awardwinning articles, year after year. They both are very dedicated to covering the stories that matter to the residents of Redmond. but the LWSD gets 5 percent. You cannot get there at 25 cents per $1,000 assessed value. The math does not work. Also note that the Juanita High School rebuild loses our pool. The pool that is supposed to cost $40,000,000 to replace. The Newcastle YMCA, completed three years ago, built two 25-meter pools with a total of six laps lanes for under $16,000,000. And, oh, by the way, it includes 32,000 square feet of gyms, locker rooms, showers, workout facilities and meeting rooms — all equal to the size of an average elementary school. The fact that the $755 million bond went down to defeat twice is very telling. The school district board simply cut $335 million from the original bond with every intention to bring the $335 million back in two to four years — there was no care of them along the way and I’m proud of their hard work and dedication. I know as I step out of this role, the level of service I have extended and instilled will continue forward. I have truly enjoyed the many partnerships we have built over the years. Our Women in Business event has grown year after year; Movies at Marymoor is a wonderful venue for us to meet our readers and enjoy a movie; our partnership with the Redmond Town Center and the City of Redmond are the types of interactions with our community we here at the Redmond Reporter are always looking for and we value them beyond words. In my next chapter with Sound Publishing, I’m excited as I will be taking on the role of regional sales manager for the Bel-
attempt at savings, budget planning or bond modifications for efficiency. The projected expenditure of $135 million for 243,000 square feet places the cost at $547 per square foot. Premier office space in Bellevue is commonly under $50 per square foot. This does not include the cost of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) building at $35 million or the Juanita Pool replacement. Just what is going on here? Kirkland City Council and Redmond City Council members are on record questioning the expenditures and the numbers. Just the facts.

Sounding off on the LWSD bond measure • My children have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, a quality education from the Lake Washington School District. Even so, their schools are crowded. Two portables at each of their schools, with new portables coming next year at each school. Despite the overcrowding, those quality schools helped my neighbor sell his house quickly. They help bring new people into Redmond, creating the vibrant growth that fuels our local economy. The young family moving in next door expects their daughter will have a classroom inside a school building with a dynamic learning space to help her succeed. The district is planning for that growth with the proposed bond for school construction. Please support our schools. Vote “yes” on the ballot for the bond measure in the April 22 special election. The Heron Rookery, a little-known stand of evergreens on the corner of 159th Place Northeast and Leary Way Northeast, is ripe for a rebranding. The recent removal of invasive brambles

The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) has a successful track record as responsible steward of those resources. Over the years, I have seen that responsible stewardship in all of my conversations with school district administration and at all of the school board meetings I have attended. And that is why, without hesitation, I am voting “yes” by April 22 for the bond measure for Lake Washington schools. Currently, 20 of our 27 elementary schools are closed to variances. That means that they are at or beyond capacity. Our student population is still growing at a record pace. While we are gratified that this growth is the best vote of confidence we could ask for from our community, the reality is we cannot

• For the past 14 years, I’ve been involved in Lake Washington public schools as a parent volunteer, PTSA officer and more recently as a board member with the Lake Washington PTSA Council. Throughout this time, I’ve seen firsthand the remarkable work our schools, teachers and families do every day to ensure our kids receive a world-class education. Both of my sons graduated from Redmond High School and are currently at university — one attends the University of Washington, Bothell and the other attends Lancaster University in Lancaster, England. keep pace with our current rate of growth. The LWSD is expected to grow by 4,000 students in the next eight years — that means we need to build one new building per year to keep pace. In fact, our schools face a 180 classroom shortfall if we do nothing. Moreover, at this critical juncture, doing nothing also means our schools will face dramatic changes in how we serve our students. Without passage of the bond, our district will be forced to consider these options: • Reducing or eliminating all-day kindergarten • Double-shifting elementary, middle schools and high schools • District-wide redrawing of boundaries — shift neighborhoods to different schools • More portable classrooms at more schools • Changes in how district programs are served — reduce or eliminate before and after-school
Before Major league sports in Seattle, boat racing was king and the Sammamish Slough Race was one of the premier Northwest events. Every April, thousands of spectators watched drivers jump logs and dodge bridge pilings on the narrow and winding 13-mile slough from Lake Washington to Lake Sammamish. Steve Greaves, a four-time slough racer and national champion boat racer, will share the history and memories of this era at 10:30 a.m. on April 12 at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, 16600 N.E. 80th St. He is speaking as part of the activities The LWSD is a topranked district with nationally ranked schools. As a PTSA representative, I have taken calls from parents in Maryland and California asking me which schools are the best in our district. I have always responded that all of our schools are excellent. Even though I no longer have children attending school in the district, I will be voting “yes” to ensure that not only do we keep all of our schools at that same level, we also provide our students with ample classroom and building space so that they can continue to learn and thrive. That’s why I encourage you to vote “yes” for LWSD schools by mailing in your ballot by April 22.

Competitors will race one or two boats at a time up the Sammamish River, navigate around the challenging oval course and back to the Kenmore Boat Launch.

Any number of things will initially attract and motivate you to seriously consider a camp for your child. Location, session duration, pricing, facilities and programs are all easily communicated in camp publications, brochures and videos. However, you’ll ultimately want to learn about the people who are responsible for the camp’s policies and operation: camp directors and operators. These professionals and their staff will guide, support, entertain and educate your child while at summer camp, so you’ll want to ask several important questions and discuss key topics in order to make the best possible choice. Review this list before calling or visiting the camp director and be sure to add to it. With a little time and effort, you’ll find a wonderful camp that fits your needs and, more importantly, those of your youngster.

This relates to the camp’s purpose and how it impacts on all areas of camp life. What ideas are emphasized and how they are reflected at camp. For instance, the importance of competition can vary widely from camp to camp. Some camp directors feel that experiencing competition is a natural part of life and emphasize this idea in sports and other activities. Others work in noncompetitive ways to foster a greater sense of cooperation and interdependence.

Ask the director for references. It’s always possible you’ll find the name of someone you know. However, a conversation with a few other parents (friends or strangers) who have children attending the camp will be very helpful to you. Also, speak with your friends about camps they’ve had experience with. This can provide you with additional direction in locating the best camp for your child.

RIDING LESSONS
Staff Requirements
Accredited overnight summer camps require a ratio of counselors to campers as follows: One counselor for every six campers for ages 7 and 8; one counselor for every eight campers for ages 9-14; one counselor for every 10 campers forages 15-17. Day camp ratios are: One counselor for every eight campers for ages 6-8; one counselor for every 10 campers ages 9-14; one counselor for every 12 campers for ages 15-17. Ask the camp director what they look for in their employees. Staff members must be dependable, enthusiastic, outgoing, knowledgeable and truly caring individuals. They will be looked up to and depended on by campers for physical and emotional support and must be qualified to assume this important responsibility. The ACA recommends that at least 80 percent of the counselors and program staff should be 18 years or older and at least 20 percent of the administrative and program staff possess a bachelor’s degree.

George Santino’s dream since he was a kid was to become a professional singer. His father liked to sing, and whenever they were out and about, the elder Santino would have his son sing if they ever came across anyone playing the piano or any other type of music. His father’s hope, Santino said, was that Santino would be discovered. After an entire childhood of this, Santino decided to pursue his dream after high school.
But things didn’t turn out how he pictured them. “I found out that there are a lot of people out there who can sing,” he said. Santino, who grew up in Philadelphia and Florida, got a few gigs but not enough for him to be able to eat — something he enjoyed doing as much as singing. So he got a job at Microsoft Corp., first in San Jose, Calif. and then in Redmond. He spent 20 years working in the tech company’s software testing department before retiring at the end of 2011 at the age of 55. Since then the Woodinville resident, now 58, has gone back to chasing his dream of becoming a professional singer. In mid-2011, leading up to his retirement, Santino met

Santino said he initially recorded it as a Christmas present for his mother but since the work was already done, he and Benedict decided to release the album online just to see how it would do. The first song released off the album was “That’s Life” on April 24, 2012. It became the No. 1 hot new swing jazz release on Amazon. “I was actually shocked that we put it out there and people enjoyed it,” Santino said. Author’s ‘Sisters’ focuses on people’s character, not their skin color Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com
At the age of 8, Mia Laizans already knew that it is what a person is like on the inside the matters, not the color of their skin. But one day in the third grade, she and her best friend Jada found out that not everybody had learned that lesson. The two girls were sitting together on the playground at school when another schoolmate came up to them and asked if Jada spoke the same language as them — English. Mia, who is now 10, said her friend got very upset. “It was kind of offensive to her,” she said about the question. This was because Jada’s ethnic background was Filipino and their schoolmate had assumed she was an immigrant. In reality, it was Mia who was the immigrant — having moved from Redmond to Sydney, Australia with her family a few years earlier. But because Mia had lighter skin and looked like most of the kids at their school, her background was not

Doctors’ Discovery Helps Diabetes
PHILADELPHIA – A team of doctors has found that a formulation of exotic sounding herbs and spices gives diabetics new hope. The formula, called Cinnatrol™ promotes healthy blood sugar levels by effectively metabolizing glucose into energy. In a research study, all patients taking just one capful of the liquid (one ounce) daily, dramatically lowered their blood sugar levels compared to a placebo group. Another scientific study found that an ingredient in Cinnatrol™ made insulin 20 times more capable converting blood sugar to energy. While individual results vary, one patient in the study lowered his blood sugar from 220-245 to the 100-130 range in only
28 days, despite being instructed not to change his dietary habits or physical activity. Some patients, under their doctors care, have been able to reduce or eliminate their need for diabetic drugs. Scientists say that Cinnatrol™ actually helps diabetic drugs to work more efficiently. Additional information is available at www.cinnatrol.com. Cinnatrol™ is available without a prescription at pharmacies and nutrition stores or call 1-877-581-1502. Now at select

Laizans also wanted to show her daughter that if you work hard enough, you could do something positive. She said at the time, Mia was struggling a bit in school. “Sisters” is illustrated by Sophie Scahill, a friend of Laizans’ who volunteered to provide art for the book. Before she and her family moved to Australia, she wrote for a newspaper in Kitsap County. With this past experience, Laizans said transitioning to writing a children’s book was not that difficult — especially as “Sisters” is based on real-life events. “It’s more natural for me to tell a story that is grounded in truth,” she said. “I’m a truth teller.” Laizans said she would like to write more stories

One challenge Laizans faced was learning how to think in pictures rather than words since the book was for elementary school-aged children and the illustrations play a large role in telling the story. It may have taken him a while, but he said that’s fine. There are times when a person needs to be practical and do what needs to be done to take care of themselves and their family, he said. “I think it’s OK to postpone your dreams...but it’s not OK to
cancel them,” said Santino, who is working on his third album, which will feature six original songs and six covers. He added that even if this second career of his had not happened, he still would have music in his life such as singing in a community choir. Santino said it is important to go after your dreams, even if you don’t get paid, pointing out that people can seek out volunteer positions and other opportunities. “Always find a way to make (your dreams) a part of your life,” he said.

NOTICE Washington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (receipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d b u y e r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quantity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the delivery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a c o r d by v i s u a l i z i n g a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet. Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension.
