Memorial Day Ceremony 2014

About 60 people took time out Monday, Memorial Day, for a short ceremony at Forks City Hall. With showers staying away for the time being the group formed a half circle around the flag pole and monument. A couple of very new Cub Scouts did a fantastic job presenting the colors, their first time ever, with City of Forks Attorney/Planner Rod Fleck directing the program. Archer Preston was called upon to do a reading before the crowd, a wreath was placed at the flag pole and several songs were sung, before the Scouts lowered and raised the flag back to half mast. Even on duty FPD Sergeant Mike Rowley stopped his police car, got out and saluted the flag before getting back in his vehicle and exciting the parking lot. At the end of the ceremony at city hall the flags were retired and the Scouts traveled to the transit center for a short ceremony there.

by Donna Barr The Sekiu Fly-In was a success for the ninth consecutive year at the Sekiu Airport, Saturday, May 24. The Clallam Bay/Sekiu Chamber of Commerce sponsored the flyin and also offered a taco lunch, with all proceeds from attendees going to the chamber’s scholarship fund. As every year, attendees went up for free rides in Gary Fernandez’s little Cessna. He only takes one adult at a time, or two children, to make sure he doesn’t over load his plane. The flight over the Strait of Juan de Fuca and nearby hills and towns makes for a very enjoyable, scenic ride. Chamber President Trish Hutson said attendance at the Fly-In “depends on the weather.” Pilot James Brocksmith commented on dealing with the low cloud cover. Starting from the airfield in Auburn in his Beechcraft Sundowner, Brocksmith flew over the clouds until he could pick up the Port Angeles Airport Beacon. Dropping below the clouds,

VFW Hall gets a cleaning Last Wednesday Larry Baysinger and Mike McCracken, with the help of several vets from Sarges Place, pressure washed the exterior of the VFW Hall. The activities at the hall has waned over the last few years and this is just the first step in revitalizing the interest there. Fifth-graders organize pet food drive Forks Elementary School counselor Victoria Rockholt’s fifth-grade student leaders decided on their own that they wanted to organize a pet food drive during “National Be Kind to Animals Week.” About the students, Rockholt said, “It was a group of students who had a passion for doing this project.” The students made posters and got the word out at school the week of May 4, fellow classmates and staff joined in and at the end of the week the group had collected 190 pounds of food. Several members of Friends of Forks Animals went to school and donations were loaded up and taken to the Forks Food Bank. Forks Elementary fifth-graders donated pet food. Shown are Victoria Rockholt, Teresa Jennings, president of Friends of Forks Animals, and Sharon Mills, vice president of the group.

FORKS FORUM
The Westernmost Newspaper in the Continental U.S.
Commentary
What’s your emergency? When I got the job as editor of the Forks Forum many people asked if the paper couldn’t get the police calls back in the paper. Sure I said. The police department e-mails them to me each week and due to limited space in the paper, they are sometimes very long so I usually put them up on the website. If you have taken the time to read them, I am sure you are a little let down. Sure you get the time of the incident and the general location of the trouble that was called in so you know if there is something to watch out for in your neighborhood but they are just the bare facts, nothing like the old police calls. These days the Forks Police Department is dispatched by Peninsula Communications in Port Angeles, so no more hometown flavor and details like when dispatching was done locally. People are rarely thinking clearly when they dial 9-1-1. Fear, anxiety and outrage have a way of clouding one’s thought processes. Of course there are
life and death scenarios, but sometimes the calls (the nonemergency calls) can seem funny. So, I went through a few old Forks Forums and picked out some old police calls from the past 10-20 years. Here are a few gems: • Reporting party states a Mustang drove down “F” street and a man jumped out and hid in the ditch for a while then ran westbound, R.P. stated this was kind of strange, wants officer to check out. • R.P. found a bottle in a bag in the field by his house, when he opened the bag it appeared to be an explosive device, he put the device in his truck and is driving to the police station. • R.P. reports they have a cat in their house that won’t leave. • R.P. reports a male sleeping on a dirt pile at Forks Thriftway. • R.P. stated a male came to her door offering to show her carpet samples, he was on foot and had no samples. • R.P. on Spruce reporting a family member opened the door

“I would really love to keep reading about Steve Markwell every single day! I don’t want to miss a single thing that happens in his life!!!” … said not one single Forks resident ever! Though you don’t think you want to keep hearing about Steve and his every move, you really do! Otherwise it would have left the news by now. Journalists NEVER keep the story going long after it’s died! By never, I mean usually. If I want to stay relevant in this competitive world of serious journalism, I have to keep up on the Steve Watch in my column as well. For those of you who haven’t heard, Mr. Markwell is back in Forks because it’s his constitutional right! Check out the 72nd Amendment. It’s in there, I swear! I read it on Facebook so it must be true! If you shared this column on Facebook, most of your friends would comment, “No one is going to take away my 72nd Amendment either! The founding fathers fought for that!” Back to Steve Watch 2014, it has been reported (though not confirmed) that Steve has been doing some driving on Russell Road! Some supporters are claiming that this is due to his property being located on Russell Road, but the whole thing is suspicious if you ask me. Why would a person drive on a road that he lives on? Someone get on Facebook and start looking into all of Markwell’s records! The town of Forks should not let this slide for one more minute. Markwell may or may not be eating at restaurants in Forks. Reliable sources (those who have never been to Forks of course) are stating that he is not bringing his pets inside with him when he eats! Steve claims that this is because animals are not allowed in restaurants. Critics aren’t buying that story at all! Overall, everyone is calling for action on the mayor’s part to change this ludicrous rule! What kind of a town stands by and allows animals to be denied entrance where food is being served?! Boycott that town now! Speaking of the mayor, it has been reported that he is going to run for Clallam County commissioner. Opponents are crying that he is doing this only to gain more power. While I can neither confirm nor deny that he is power hungry, the person claiming this may not be the most concrete witness either as they spelled Clallam “Clallum” in their obviously very accurate story. Either way, if Monohon wanted power, he should have just applied for the Forks Forum humor columnist job. That’s where the real power lies! No one else gets to point out the obvious ridiculousness of things and then say, “Just kidding!” Haha … just kidding.

The Forks Forum belongs to the readers of the newspaper. The opinion section is the place where reader thoughts appear as letters to the editor. Letters longer than 300 words are sent back to the writer for revision. We only edit for spelling and grammar. Any substantial changes are sent to the letter writer for revision. While we strive to publish all letters, those focusing on local issues take precedence over statewide or national issues. No personal attacks or unsubstantiated allegations are accepted. Those letters are returned to the writer with an explanation why the letter is not going to run in its existing form. Deadline for letters to appear is noon the Monday before publication. Letters are published on a space-available basis, with time-sensitive letters on local issues taking first priority. There are times, therefore, when a letter might not appear for a week or two. Letters to the editor can be mailed to the Forks Forum, PO Box 300, Forks, WA 8331; e-mailed to editor@forksforum.com; faxed to 374-5739; or dropped off at our office at 44 S. Forks Ave. All letters must have a name, address and telephone number for verification purposes. Only the writer’s name and hometown are printed in the newspaper.

In one morning, both sides of the 12-mile stretch of the Lake Crescent highway were scoured clean of all trash that could be safely retrieved. In addition to 600 pounds of trash and 200 pounds of tires, 400 pounds of recyclable cans and bottles were collected and recycled. Volunteers, including park staff from all disciplines and work units, participated in the blitz, along with employees from Lake Crescent Lodge and Student Conservation Association volunteers. “We appreciate our staff and volunteers who came

The Forks Forum is holding a contest to have the seven Forum newspaper vending machines decorated by local artists. If you are an artist or would be artist, submit your design idea to the Forks Forum office, 490 S. Forks Ave. Seven designs will be selected. Vandals hit Mount Mueller/Littleton Horse Camp A picnic bench was found trying to leave its home at Mount Mueller/Littleton Horse Camp. From Friday-Monday, May 1619, the bench somehow moved from the campsite behind the horse corrals to about halfway to the parking lot. One could safely say people were helping it to move, perhaps with the intent of taking it away altogether. On Friday, Larry Baysinger, a long-time Forest Service volunteer, went to the camp to prepare
the stock watering tank for the summer riding season. That is when he found several essential parts missing from the water system, including the faucet. “The feeling I have is that the parts haven’t been gone long,” said Baysinger. He adds that all parts were there and in working order when he winterized the system late last fall. The stock tank and water system have been in operation since 2005. The Peninsula Chapter
of Backcountry Horsemen and other riders have appreciated having the water readily available as the two creeks in the area dry up or go underground in the summer months. The water also is readily available in the event of a fire. The camp is on Forest Service land; however it is mostly maintained by volunteers. Picnic benches, toilets, signage and water system parts are largely funded by community
Beachwatchers and birders wanted for coastal observation and seabird survey team On Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) will deliver a free training session at the Sekiu Community Center. COASST volunteers help make a difference for the environment by collecting data on beach-coast carcasses of marine birds on a monthly basis to establish the baseline pattern of beached bird mortality on North Pacific beaches. Data collected helps address important marine conservation issues and protect marine resources. Through an interactive, handson workshop, trainees will become acquainted the custom COASST field guide, Beached Birds, and have a chance to try out their newly acquired identification skills on seabird species common to Northern California. The COASST training provides volunteers with the tools to monitor for potential changes in the marine environment and promote stewardship of local marine resources. COASST is a citizen science project of the University of Washington in partnership with state, tribal and federal agencies, environmental organizations and community groups. COASST

By collaborating with citizens, natural resource management agencies and environmental organizations, COASST works to translate long-term monitoring into effective marine conservation solutions. Currently, more 800 volunteers survey beaches in Washington, Oregon, California

with in the world today.” He further explained that the camp is appreciated by all local users. It is up to all who go there to be the watchdogs as it is beyond the scope of government agencies to patrol regularly.

Violet Richardson Award: Rebekah Johansen and Cathy Johnson, SIORF member
Women’s Opportunity Award: Tabetha Gaydeski and Cathy Johnson, SIORF member
Soroptimist awards night On Thursday, May 15, a number of students and local women were recipients of scholarships and awards at the annual Awards Night of Soroptimist International of the Olympic Rain Forest. Middle school students Savannah Norbisrath, Scott Archibald and David Powers, who earned 4.0 gradepoint averages were honored and spoke on the impact SIORF had made since adopting and mentoring the Forks Middle School. The Women’s Opportunity Awards program is SIA’s major project. Through this program clubs in 19 countries and territories assist women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects. Since 1972, approximately $25 million has been dispersed internationally. The winner of this year’s award was Tabetha Gaydeski. She was awarded $1,000. The club decided to continue its support by awarding the second half of her award, $500 this year. The Violet Richardson Award, named after the founder of Soroptimists, recognizes young women who make a difference in their community and the world through volunteer efforts. The awards are given on half to the recipient and one half to the project where they volunteer. Rebekah Johansen, a FHS senior, received a $500
award which she will share with FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) where she currently serves as a state officer and is running for a national position as well. She will attend nationals in Texas in July. The second Violet Richardson Award recipient was Sehar Bokahri, also a senior at FHS. Her volunteer efforts are varied and many. The Forks Food Bank will not only share her award, she has graciously donated her half of the $500 award to it as well. The Ruby Award honors women who, through their professional efforts, are making extraordinary differences in the lives of women and girls and inspire and encourage others to do the same. Susie Brandelius, a self-employed paralegal specializing in family law and a strong advocate for justice in any form, was the winner of $500, one half of which will go to the Forks Abuse Program. The Diane Demorest Award, instituted by the local club to honor late member Diane Demorest, is awarded to a person with ties to this community who is enrolled in a nursing program and plans to use this education locally. The scholarship of $1,000 was given to Sarah Demorest. The Forks High School seniors receiving academic scholarships (based on academic achievement and need) of $1,500 each, were Erin Weekes and Mercedes Flores. The winner of the technical scholarship, also $1,500, was Katelyn Wasankari.
Linda McGinley and scholarship recipient Katelyn Wasankari with Rhonda Cole, SIORF
Scholarship recipient Erin Weeks with her father Brian, and Rhonda Cole, SIORF.
Diane Demorest Award: Sarah Demorest and Cathy Johnson, SIORF
All of these awards were made possible by the generous contributions of this community to the fundraising efforts of the club, such as the annual Festival of Trees. Currently, members are selling Duck Derby tickets to support the SOS (Soroptimist Oncology Support) fund which pays for transportation and travel expenses for person traveling for cancer treatment.
Scholarship: Lydia Flores with daughter Mercedes, a scholarship recipient, and Rhonda Cole, SIORF.
