f Colleen Michael had her way, no one would go to bed hungry. Such an idealistic goal might be out of reach, but her efforts have assured that disadvantaged residents can look forward to one belly-filling meal each week. Michael, a stay-at-home mother of two, was first drawn to feeding the needy about a year ago. She envisioned something like a weekly soup kitchen, modeled on the existing – and popular – Simply Soup program

offered at the Enumclaw Senior Center. Looking for advice, Michael reached out to Rene Popke, executive director of the Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation. Popke helped Michael with some early hurdles and eventually provided the biggest boost to the fledgling effort: Michael’s Full Bellies program is now officially under the umbrella of the ERHF, protected by the Foundation’s insurance. A second major hurdle was cleared when Calvary Presbyterian Church agreed to host the weekly Full Bellies gatherings. The weekly meals were first offered in December – with one person attending the inaugural event – but popularity has blossomed. Largely due to word-of-mouth advertising, Michael and a dedicated core group of volunteers are now seeing 60 people show

Griffin Avenue closures closures in one direction from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Signed detours will be in place to guide drivers around the closures. More than 1.5 miles of Griffin Avenue between High Point Street and state Route 410 is being repaved this summer to preserve and extend the life of the highway. It was last paved in 1998. The $3.2 million project will also improve more than 90 sidewalk ramps and install a new traffic signal at the intersection of SR 410 and Watson Street. Work will be complete by early fall.

The city of Enumclaw may be heading toward a total prohibition on all phases of the marijuana trade, both recreational and medicinal. The first step toward the widespread lockdown on legal weed – from production to processing and eventually selling – is to be debated during Thursday night’s meeting of the Enumclaw Planning Commission. That group will be gaveled to order at 7 p.m. in council chambers of Enumclaw City Hall, 1339 Griffin Ave. There will be a public hearing prior to the commission’s vote. The Planning Commission’s verdict serves as a recommendation to the City Council, which wields the ultimate authority. Even though Washington state voters passed Initiative 502, which legalizes private use of marijuana by adults, the state’s attorney general has decreed that

HURST For State Representative Issues That Matter June 25, 2014

An Independent Voice for the 31st District

Governor Inslee signs House Bill 2155 by Representatives Hurst and Dahlquist.

Dear Neighbors,

An example of how I do business is our response to the theft of alcohol from stores after the liquor Privatization Initiative. Some large box stores had theft rates as high as 50%, mostly by juveniles. As chair of the Government Accountability and Oversight Commitee, I worked with my Republican seatmate, Representative Cathy Dahlquist, and we co-sponsored legislation that forced stores to more properly secure and monitor their alcohol, dramatically reducing their loss rates. That means fewer kids drinking, fewer drunk drivers and fewer fatalities on our roads, which makes all of us a lot safer. That’s what happens when legislators from different parties work together as a team!

One of the greatest challenges we face today is trust in our representative form of democracy. People are weary of leaders that constantly divide us for partisan and personal advantage. I think there is a better way.

Sincerely,

marijuana…be prohibited within the City of Enumclaw.” Shook’s report refers to legalized marijuana as “an emerging industry with a documented history of risks, crime and hazards, and as of yet, untested rules and procedures.” Her report acknowledges that the state’s Liquor Control Board has detailed potential troubles with legal weed, but “the rules are untested and the potential for the uses to detrimentally impact the commu-

nity is high. Shook emphasizes that the city is only dealing with the growing, processing and selling of marijuana and doing so through the land-use process. Nothing the city is doing, she said, infringes on an adult’s legal right to use the product. The Liquor Control Board will begin issuing business licenses next month to those who produce, process and sell marijuana. Shook’s report offers a concession to those who might want to obtain marijuana, medicinal or otherwise. King County allows processing and producing in a variety of zones, she wrote.

The Key to Prevention

hen domestic violence is in the news, it’s usually after the worst has happened: a violent assault, an injured child, a murder. So it’s no surprise that when we think about domestic violence interventions we think about police, courts, and hospitals. But what about the role each of us can play? Many of us have either experienced abuse in our own relationships or know someone who has. And often we don’t know what to do about it. Fortunately, in this community, and in every community across Washington State, there is a local domestic violence program: a place where anyone can call—privately and at no cost—to talk with someone about concerns, options, and safety. You don’t have to be the person experiencing abuse to call. Advocates are there to talk with friends and family, neighbors and c ow o r k e r s — a ny o n e — about how to be supportive if someone turns to you for help. But what if we didn’t have to wait until things were awful to intervene? What if we could stop this violence before it started? Domestic violence is preventable and talking with people of all ages about relationships is a key part of prevention. No one is too young or too old to think about what a healthy relationship looks and feels like. It’s never too early, and it’s never too late, to talk about how we deserve to be treated. Conversations build expectations, and talking with our loved ones lets us in on what they’re going through. Imagine how much easier it would be for our friends to turn to us for help if talking about our relationships was something we already did. To find the domestic violence program in your community, visit wscadv. org or call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or 1-800787-3224 (TTY). To raise money and awareness for domestic violence prevention, register today for the Refuse To Abuse® 5K at Safeco Field at refusetoabuse5k.org. Williams new head of state coaches By Kevin Hanson

was designed as a two-year term but, lacking any interested candidates, Conn kept the job for eight years. Williams, who takes over immediately, said he’ll do it for a year “and see what happens.” Williams certainly is known around the state by his coaching peers. A year ago, he was given the WSBCA’s Don Freeman Award, which is given annually to a coach who not only enjoys success on the field but also serves as a quality representative of Washington high school baseball. Williams is a White River alum, having graduated in 1984 before heading off to play baseball at Big Bend Community College and Central Washington University. He returned home and coached the White River Middle School team to

Veteran White River High coach Mike Williams was recently named president of the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association. Williams wasn’t immediately sure what the post entails, simply noting he would be “jumping in with both feet and seeing what happens.” He takes the reins from outgoing president Brad Conn of Sedro Woolley High School. “It is going to be a huge undertaking and I can’t fill Brad’s shoes, I already know that. I’m just going to do the best I can,” Williams said via email. The association’s presidential post originally

a championship in 1988 and headed the White River High program in 1989. He then made stops in Yelm and Enumclaw before taking over the White River program for good in 1997. During his 18 years as a head coach Williams had built a record of 218-175 and led his teams to 14 playoff appearances. Along the way, there have been four league championships and two appearances in the state tournament; the first state trip came in 2002, when the Hornets placed fifth, and the second came during the recently-concluded season. He has earned league Coach of the Year accolades five times and, following the 2013 campaign, was honored by the WSBCA as the state’s Class 2A coach of the year.

Seahawks’ favorite playbook is the Bible By Mark Klaas Football is a snap to Clint Gresham. Overcoming doubt takes time. Blessed with the gift of handling a specialized job in the National Football League, the Seattle Seahawks’ long snapper admits he struggled with uncertainty early in his career. That was until he found peace and solidified his faith. Gresham, a Christian leader and Super Bowl XLVIII champion, follows Xs and Os during the season, but his preferred playbook is the Bible. Here’s why: “I struggled with a lot of insecurity as a young person and I really carried that into my walk with God,” Gresham told his audience during a recent talk in Kent. “I brought this insecurity

Because I had this insecurity and this doubt, I struggled with the fear of man. “(But) if you believe about yourself (the way) Jesus

believes about you, you will be unstoppable in every single area of your life,” he said. “Jesus thinks awesome things about you. That’s just the truth, man.” Gresham said his renewed commitment to Christ has brought better, brighter days. He brings that passionate

message home to others in his travels as an inspirational speaker. Kent was the latest stop, an opportunity for Gresham to tell his story, “The Making of a Champion,” replete with oratory, amusing anecdotes and a short film starring teammates and coaches. A gentle giant, the 27-yearold Gresham performs ministry during the offseason, including summer camps for kids. He lives on Mercer Island, where he shares his home with five other leaders of Young Life, an outreach ministry that serves youth. During the season, Gresham leads the Seahawks’ Bible study groups. Speaking engagements are just an extension of Gresham’s faith-filled calling, a belief deeply rooted with family in Texas. Given his size and tem-

perament, athletics, notably football, came naturally to Gresham. The New Orleans Saints took a chance, signing the undrafted free agent out of Texas Christian University in 2010. But the Saints soon waived him and the Seahawks, well, snapped him up. Gresham handles an anonymous but critical job – repeatedly making accurate snaps to the punter positioned 15 yards back from the line of scrimmage. He also triggers the ball back to the placeholder on critical field goals and extra-point conversions. It’s a repetitious role that has little room for error. Gresham said he is comfortable with his life, his career and his faith. It’s also great to be a part of a wonderful group of teammates who accomplished something special last season.

Senior dogs might need extra help Caring for a dog is no small task. Many dogs need daily exercise and interaction with their owners in order to live long and healthy lives. But as dogs age, the responsibility of caring for them can become even more demanding. When a dog begins to exhibit signs of aging, it’s easy for dog owners to assume that the rigors of caring for the dog will lessen. But while aging dogs may not need or want to spend as much time playing fetch or walking around the park, they often grow more dependent on their owners. Recognizing a dog’s changing needs and how those needs relate to caring for the dog is a responsibility dog owners must take seriously. • Consider altering the dog’s diet. Many aging dogs do not need as much food to maintain a healthy weight as they did when they were puppies or in the prime of their life. Much of that is because aging dogs don’t exercise as much as they used to, meaning they won’t be burning as many calories as they once did. So an aging dog that’s still on the same diet it had as a youngster might gain weight, which can lead to a host of uncomfortable or even painful ailments. Owners concerned about their dogs’ diets should consult a veterinarian, who may recommend a geriatric diet that will pro-

vide all of the necessary vitamins and nutrients dogs need while reducing their risk of obesity. • Make sure water is accessible and available throughout the day. Older dogs are at greater risk of dehydration, so owners should make sure water is readily available for the dog at all times. Aging dogs often struggle with their mobility, so place several water bowls throughout the house so dogs do not have to travel far when they need a beverage. • Prioritize grooming. Owners of aging dogs must prioritize grooming for a variety of reasons. Regular grooming is a great way for owners to discover any abnormalities, such as lumps or tumors, on the dog that might be indicative of a medical issue. Any such abnormalities should immediately be brought to the attention of a veterinarian. • Don’t overlook dental care. Dogs are known for bad breath, so while there may not be much owners can do to make their aging dogs’ breath smell like a rose garden, that does not mean pet owners should overlook dental care. Dogs whose teeth are clean and tartar-free are less likely to develop potentially serious medical problems, including heart disease, which can be a byproduct of tooth decay. • Lend a hand to dogs who are

struggling with their mobility. Aging dogs suffering from arthritis may struggle to get out of bed or climb flights of stairs. When dogs start to struggle with their mobility, pick them up and carry them up the stairs or help them out of bed in the morning. Veterinarians may prescribe antiinflammatory medication to ease soreness and pain, but owners can take additional steps to help dogs with mobility issues, such as positioning bedding and food and water bowls so that they are more accessible to dogs. Dog owners often find it heartbreaking when the aging process starts to take its toll on man’s best friend. But there are several ways owners can make the aging process more comfortable for their dogs.

Dogs and cats may be the most popular pets, but reptiles have their share of admirers as well. Reptiles can make great pets, and they may be ideal for children or novice pet owners. Unlike cats or dogs, many reptiles need a very specific environment to thrive. That includes some sort of UV light, a warming stone and particularly hot conditions. Reptiles and amphibians are coldblooded animals, meaning their body temperatures fluctuate based on the conditions of their environment. They will require an external heating source to stay comfortable. Certain reptiles may be better for beginners than others. Here is a look at some popular reptilian pets and what is necessary to care for them. • Bearded dragon: This animal hails from Australia and may grow up to two feet in length, most of which is in the tail. These lizards will need an appropriate housing structure, which should be a 55-gallon tank for the average-sized single male dragon. They require special light bulbs to absorb vitamins. Dragons are omnivorous, so you will have to provide both plant and animal food sources. Even though they come from arid conditions, spray the tank with water each day to provide them with a water source, as they will not drink from a bowl. Dragons are hardy and can endure even if some mistakes in care are made early on. • Green anole: Also known as the American chameleon, green anoles are another popular starter pet. Anoles are inexpensive, which makes them a great choice for first-time reptile owners. Anoles can be easy to care for if you meet the right requirements.

Can a bag of chips sway a legislator? Amid the dialectic contours in Olympia they are trying to figure out if influence can be peddled with a few bags of Doritos or a $12 meal. A panel empowered to guide elected leaders along a righteous path is struggling to draw clear ethical boundaries for lawmakers when dining and drinking with lobbyists. State lawmakers are allowed to “accept gifts in the form of free food and beverage on infrequent occasions” if it’s related to their official duties. But existing law doesn’t define “infrequent.” Pressure to come up with a definition arose following revelations a handful of legislators regularly dined on lobbyists’ dime durJerry Cornfield ing the 2013 session. Columnist Several of them may have done so while collecting taxpayer-funded per diem payments, according to research compiled by reporters for a public radio station and Associated Press. The Legislative Ethics Board, a panel of lawmakers and legal minds, is trying to provide clarity on the rules but members are thus far unable to agree on whether “infrequent” should be defined in terms of a specific number of meals. Also, they are wrestling with what exactly constitutes a meal and at one point must lawmakers report them. Right now, legislators must report whenever they are treated to meal worth more than $50. That brings us to a meeting of the ethics board and a confession from Rep. Drew Hansen, D-Bainbridge Island, that a bag of Doritos can be a meal for him. He wanted to know how many bags of Doritos a lawmaker can accept from a lobbyist before it becomes a meal that must be reported as a gift. The answer he got from the board counsel was that it’s not crystal clear but if he gets $50 worth all at once it likely needs to be declared. That didn’t sound like a problem to Hansen, who endorsed limiting lawmakers to an average of one free meal per week and to report those exceeding $5 in value. Such a course of action didn’t set well with other panel members who contended it restricted lawmakers’ ability to interact with lobbyists too much and created potentially burdensome reporting requirements. During the public hearing portion of the meeting one lawmaker argued those kinds of changes would undermine the ability of citizen legislators to serve. State Rep. Matt Manweller, R-Ellensburg, told the panel that dining with a lobbyist may be the only time someone of his limited financial means can learn nuances of bills. He said he was offended at the notion he could be “influenced by a $12 hamburger” and worried the ethics panel would “create a system where rich people sit down with other rich people” to dictate legislation. A citizen Legislature means “even poor and middle class people get to sit down with lobbyists,” he said. “I sometimes get asked to go to four dinners a night. My big fear is not that I’m going to get influenced, it’s that I’m going to get fat.” The Legislative Ethics Board will continue its discussions in August.

With selfrighteous certainty he condemned an American Army sergeant to death. After years of watching the exaggerated allegations from the bellowing talking heads, it was easy to judge the soldier. After all, he had all of the necessary “fair and balanced” facts. It’s all so black and white to you,

isn’t it Mr. Patriot? How easy it must be, sitting in your comfortable recliner in front of your TV, to spout your support for the troops. You have no need to understand what Sgt. Bergdahl experienced after he put on a uniform and went to fight a war. Does it frighten you to think that there may be more to comprehend than what you can see when you peek out between the folds of the flag you’ve wrapped around yourself? When this U.S. soldier returns home after five years of Taliban captivity, let’s set the pitchforks aside and provide him with a fair trial (and perhaps a bit of compassion). Bowe Bergdahl went to war so that you could continue to live in a soci-

Not the same since Johnny Like many of you, the first latenight TV show I watched with any regularity was the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. That set the bar pretty high. Every late-night show that followed his departure has been disappointing. Better than any host before or since, Johnny and many of his guests seemed to have genuine, relaxed conversations that were entirely unrehearsed and spontaneous without any ulterior motive or purpose. (Guests on current shows often appear to be there mainly to promote their latest movie or TV program.) I recall one evening when Johnny sat down with rock ‘n’ roll legend Chuck Berry. They became so engrossed in their dialogue, Johnny cancelled the appearance of other guests and continued talking with Chuck for the entire show. Johnny set the late-night format and every host since has followed it to the point of boredom. Jimmy Fallon is a bit different in so far as he’s developed some novel skits using “regular people” from the audience. He’s cute, giddy in an amateurish kind of way and, to his credit, he appears more current and hip than Jay Leno was. Fallon often demonstrates a Robin Williams, coke-like quickness and you have to listen attentively or you miss some of his quips. I know I do and I presume that’s also true of

ELFERS FROM 6 This change in the way things were done began in the Reagan years when the shift in thinking was to decrease the size of the government. This resulted in many former jobs, once done by government employees, now being contracted out to private companies that often charged double the salaries of what government workers got. In 1993, President Bill Clinton announced the “reinventing government” program that cut about 250,000 government jobs. The work still had to be done, though. Those jobs went to private employees who, according to a 2011 study called

many of you. On ABC, Jimmy Kimmel reigns over late-night duties and there’s nothing much new about his approach. Compared to his competition, Kimmel appears a bit stiff, his expression is kind of deadpan and he has a rather peculiar sense of timing. Occasionally, the laughter sounds canned and, if so, that’s a first for late-night. Of course, CBS is still holding Dave Letterman, now the dean of the midnight shift. He seems more laid back than Fallon and Kimmel, but all of them are hyper compared to Johnny. Though I’ve enjoyed his left-wing political sarcasm, especially his jabs at expresident George W., Dave has never been especially appealing on a personal level. He’s simply not the kind of fella I’d like to have a beer with. The genre is in dire need of a charismatic personality who’s relaxed enough to carry on a living-room conversation with highpowered stars, which can be

difficult because such stars are frequently pretty fragile and the host has to make them look good. You can be sure, Fallon will never ask a question that might catch his guests off guard. Letterman, however, is apparently secure enough to sometimes test the wit and quickness of celebrities. Dave is getting ready to retire. Stephen Colbert has been selected as his replacement. How CBS execs arrived at this choice is anyone’s guess but, make no mistake, it wasn’t an easy, snap decision. The late-night hour can be an economic bonanza if it garnishes the ratings. It will be interesting to see what Colbert does when freed from his conservative persona on “The Colbert Report.” There’s a chance he’s strong enough to forge his own unique vision and thereby breathe a little fresh air into the standard format. On the other hand, late-night shows may have run their course; that is, maybe we’ve finally come to realize that famous people don’t necessarily possess any secret insights and don’t necessarily have anything interesting to say. Then, too, there are a lot of other channels, movies and shows vying for our attention. Perhaps Carson was right. He always felt it was time to bow out because he’d seen the best of the late-night world.

the Project on Government Oversight, got paid roughly twice as much as former government employees doing the same work. A computer IT engineer who worked for the government might get paid $135,000 per year had now been replaced by a private engineer who made $270,000 for the same service. Thousands of young professionals poured into the city and the region. Walking the streets of Washington, D.C., as I recently did showed me this very clearly: there are lots of young, prosperous 20- and 30-somethings in “This Town” as it is called by the locals. The median age is 26. According to the NY Times article, D.C. has become a two-tiered town: about one third make less than $60,000 per year while 45 per-

cent make $100,000 and more. There are few of what might be called middle class remaining. It’s a sad state of affairs to see that not only has there been a shift of wealth from the middle class and poor to the top 1 percent, but also that our nation’s government should be shifting the wealth of the nation from the hinterlands to Washington, D.C. So much for the small government philosophy. It seems like the trickle-down theory of funding the rich to increase jobs for those below them has now shifted to the “trickle to” Washington, D.C., theory where government is now the new conduit for increasing the wealth of a few in the nation’s capital at the expense of us taxpayers.

LETTERS FROM 6 More often than not, at least one of the features was a Western starring the likes of John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart or Randolph Scott. These stars frequently played the town sheriff, alone in a hostile world protected by his six-gun and sense of honor. As frequently happened, the lone lawman depicted by one of these actors found himself guarding a prisoner, standing mostly alone against a mob seeking vigilante justice. Invariably, the mob had been inflamed by a hot-blooded blowhard who demanded instant punishment for the prisoner, venomously proclaiming, “We know he’s guilty. Why do we have to wait for a trial?” Having learned in my elementary school that American justice was built around the concept of “innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” I could never understand how supposedly decent Americans could want to ignore justice and take the law into their own hands. As I grew up, I learned that there are many evil and wrong ways to mete out what the self-righteous refer to as justice. There’s the starchamber, the show trial and the lynch mob, and lately also the social media. There’s hot-talk radio and innuendobased opinion shows on TV, and yes, there are letters to

the editor whose sole purpose is to foment anger and hate, while prejudging the putative offender. There are declarative “facts” with little or no verification, all aimed at agitating “the mob” to prejudge a case. But I also learned that, under our Constitution, there is only one correct way to assure real justice, and that is through the calm presentation of evidence, not opinion, in a court of law, followed by the verdict of a jury, untainted by prejudice. When Bowe Bergdahl put on the uniform of the United States military, his behavior became the province of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the system of courts-martial, not to be preempted by the ranting demagoguery of talk show hosts and those inflamed by their rhetoric. Cries of “treason” by those with much opinion and few facts warrant scorn, not support. Finally, and as an aside, claims that the “morally bankrupt Democrat party will block any impeachment efforts” is provable nonsense. The Republican Party frequently remind us that they have a clear majority in the House of Representatives, which is given the sole power of impeachment by the Constitution. If they have evidence of “high crimes and misdemeanors,” let them present it and put up or shut up with the impeachment fantasies. but for human beings they can seem impossible. Yet through God all things are possible. So what will be possible for the faith community, and those who don’t belong to a faith community, here on the Plateau in the future? I just gave you the answer – all things are possible. A shelter for abused women – possible. Transition housing for homeless – possible. No child or family going to bed

hungry – possible. All being welcomed – possible. That is not an opportunity just for Christians. It is an opportunity for people of all faiths or no faiths. My prayer is that by working and dialoging together, the possibilities will become realities. May God bless you and our communities with the power of possibility. And may the last word always be grace.

NOTICE Washington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (receipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d b u y e r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quantity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the delivery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a c o r d by v i s u a l i z i n g a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet. Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension. To m a k e a f i r e w o o d complaint, call 360-9021857. agr.wa.gov/inspection/ WeightsMeasures/Fire woodinformation.aspx agr.wa.gov/inspection/WeightsMeasures/Firewoodinformation.aspx
