Clallam County residents and interested residents from surrounding counties now have the opportunity to compete for entry-level deputy sheriff or adult corrections deputy positions for Clallam County Sheriff’s Office without having to leave the peninsula. In response to a request from Sheriff Bill Benedict, National Testing Network, the county’s law enforcement test administrator, has established a testing site at Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., in Port Angeles. This is an interim site until arrangements to move the testing to Peninsula College are finalized. On Wednesday, July 9, National Testing Network simultaneously will test for entry-level deputy sheriff and adult corrections deputy positions in separate rooms at Vern Burton Community Center. Anyone who is interested and at least 21 years old needs to register for testing prior to July 9 at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com or by calling toll-free 866563-3882. Candidates who successfully complete the testing and application review processes will be interviewed by the Sheriff’s Office when a vacancy occurs. They will then be placed on an employment list for the position for which they have tested for one year, ranked in the order of their overall score. The testing process is continuous, so ranking on the list may change as other candidates are placed on or go off the list. National Testing Network anticipates it will administer testing for entry level deputy sheriff and adult corrections deputy positions in Port Angeles at least quarterly and possibly even more frequently in the future if participation in the testing warrants it.

The Quileute Tribe is excited to announce they will be hosting an official grand opening of the River’s Edge Restaurant in LaPush, on Friday, June 27. The facility will be operating as a tribal enterprise, and restaurant will serve as a workforce development opportunity for tribal families. Long time Forks resident Zach George knows and respects the tribal community and has worked at the restaurant before and will now take over as manager. George said, “We will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and we’ll serve local fish in season, such as cod, halibut, coho and crab,” adding, “We plan on buying from High Tide which is right next door.” George said he came back to work at the restaurant because of the beautiful view. “I was born in Forks, and lived on Richwine Bar until I was 13, I went to school with a lot of people from LaPush and rode the school bus with most. I missed all the people, everybody down here would come in and smile and ask, How’s it going? like, an extended family.” George said he may eventually expand the menu, try to cook what people want and possibly stay open year-round. At this point it is estimated staff will possibly number around 16. George hopes customers come for the view and enjoy the qual-
THE REAL FORKS The Circus Must Go On! by Christy Rasmussen Ford I’ve been asked before if everything is a joke to me. The short answer is yes. The long answer is yes, with the exception of my love of brand new socks. I wouldn’t joke about that. If this writing thing ever takes off (and I think we all know that it won’t), I have every intention of wearing a brand new pair of socks every day. Yes, I know this is wasteful. That’s why I plan on donating the socks to horses after I’m done with them. The poor horses have to wear shoes with no socks! I can’t even imagine the blisters they must get. Who will think of the horses?! Speaking of horses, if I have learned anything from this column, it’s that you cannot joke about the beating of a dead horse. More specifically, the beating of a dead horse that is also known as the anti-Steve Markwell/Boycott Forks circus show (by the way, he’s been seen at the gym according to my unnamed informant). These specific circus show jokes are apparently not funny to some. I wrote one little column….OK, 10 little columns mocking this never ending saga and suddenly the claws (paws?) really came out. I tried to explain to the circus performers that it was all in good fun. No one is exempt from making special appearances in my column, not even the police department. They weren’t buying it. The jokes were taken so personally! Racism, religion, politics, etc., are all perfectly acceptable to joke about. However, I joke about the circus and suddenly they want to take me out…and I’m not talking like dinner and a movie either. People were calling me things like a nitwit and brain dead. I really like the word nitwit by the way. I think I shall add it to my vocabulary. As far as me being brain dead goes, duh. If I wasn’t, I would do something meaningful with my life, like become a circus ringleader. That might be fun. I once had intentions of becoming a lawyer and even got accepted into law school. Then I remembered that judges have no sense of humor. With my inability to stay serious for long, being called a nitwit in court might be the least of my worries. I think the reason these jokes are not going over so well is because it’s too soon. Timing is everything in comedy. I believe that one day, circus performers and nitwits alike are all going to have a good laugh over the matter while we sit around a campfire. I do suppose I should probably stop stoking that fire though. So, I shall extend my olive branch (or maybe just a can of olives) and stick to making fun of the police department from here on out. They don’t take things so seriously. After all, the FPD hasn’t “found” *wink wink* anything to arrest me of…. yet. To continue this conversation, e-mail me at christyrasmussen@yahoo.com, subject line; “Dear Nitwit”. Letters to the editor policy
The Forks Forum belongs to the readers of the newspaper. The opinion section is the place where reader thoughts appear as letters to the editor. Letters longer than 300 words are sent back to the writer for revision. We only edit for spelling and grammar. Any substantial changes are sent to the letter writer for revision. While we strive to publish all letters, those focusing on local issues take precedence over statewide or national issues. No personal attacks or unsubstantiated allegations are accepted. Those letters are returned to the writer with an explanation why the letter is not going to run in its existing form. Deadline for letters to appear is noon the Monday before publication. Letters are published on a space-available basis, with time-sensitive letters on local issues taking first priority. There are times, therefore, when a letter might not appear for a week or two. Letters to the editor can be mailed to the Forks Forum, PO Box 300, Forks, WA 8331; e-mailed to editor@forksforum.com; faxed to 374-5739; or dropped off at our office at 44 S. Humor, in the eye of the beholder If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then where is humor? In the eye of public opinion? But the eye of public opinion is a twitchy unpredictable eye. In what turned out to be quite an insight into a surprise social experiment, these are my observations. Bob from True Value is a practical joker and has an interesting sense of humor. He thought it would be funny to put an image of Mick Dodge on the Forks signs and see the reaction and see just how long they would remain up. Well, not long. I was asked to take photos of the caper and once done I posted two different photos on the Forum website and shared it to three Facebook pages. The picture of Bob and Vern Hestand wearing funny nose disguises only got likes and was viewed by 900 people, not a single negative comment. The photo of the finished product, Mick applied to the sign, got over 2,700 views and 53 comments, they ran from words like stupid, hate, embarrassment; others gave constructive ideas like a fish or something would be better, one person felt it was tearing our town apart, and then

a number of people thought it was funny, but many didn’t read the article that accompanied, so they didn’t realize it was a prank. They thought the city had done it. Now Bob is getting a ton of grief for doing something he thought would be funny, so please don’t make Bob wish he didn’t have a sense of humor, it will mean no more Bigfoot feet hanging in his store, no more “Stop the rain” donation jars and an end to the donation jar to stop donation jars, or one of my favorites, the lost Goldfish in Sherwood Forest posters will be no more. Then there was the time Bob had the shark in his parking lot. One person was mad because Mick is anti-logging, I would guess we have people in our community that are antilogging — we just don’t know it. Everybody is entitled to their opinions and their style of humor. As for Mick tearing our town apart, I think really terrible things like meth and heroin and a lack of jobs for young people are the real problems we face. No, Mick Dodge does not represent us, he represents himself. Bella, Edward and Jacob don’t represent us either — they represent a fantasy that has brought tourists that eat at our restaurants, stay in our motels and these business-

How often have you seen a teenager or even an adult on their cell phone while driving? Have you ever been talking or texting on your phone while driving? How about eating or reaching into the back seat? Distracted driving is more than just involving your cell phone. Distracted driving is when you take your focus (eyes, hands or attention) off your driving and put it toward something else. This not only puts you at risk of a crash, but puts those around you in danger also.
Texting while driving is becoming more of an issue each year and can make a crash up to 23 times more likely. It is a fact that teens who text while driving spend 10 percent of the time outside their lane. In 2012, distracted driving caused 3,328 deaths and around 421,000 people were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver. The teens in Forks Young Life Club are encouraging you to turn off the cell phone, put away the snacks and focus on the road. It may save someone’s life! Young Life Club
es provide jobs. I know, we all know the stuff Mick does is baloney, like crab in the river or eating some of the items he has eaten. It is like in “Ax Men” when Joe, the yarder engineer, pulls on the controls and then just throws his hands up in the air and lets the cable fly. What yarder engineer does that? Well, probably none? On a bright note, we really should thank our lucky stars that Honey Boo Boo does not live in Ford Park. In Christy’s column today she says humor is all about timing and things aren’t funny if it is too soon. It looks to me like there is not enough time in the world for some things to be funny. It is great to see how passionate Forks people are about who they are and where they came from, but sometimes we need to laugh. In the end, without a sense of humor, what are we? We are not funny. The Association Azul Wasi dren in Azul Wasi an education W project is a foster home for aban- to make them an independent hen domestic violence is in the news, it’s usually after the worst has happened: a violent assault, an injured child, a murder. So it’s no surprise that when we think about domestic violence interventions we think about police, courts, and hospitals. But what about the role each of us can play? Many of us have either experienced abuse in our own relationships or know someone who has. And often we don’t know what to do about it. Fortunately, in this community, and in every community across Washington State, there is a local domestic violence program: a place where anyone can call—privately and at no cost—to talk with someone about concerns, options, and safety. You don’t have to be the person experiencing abuse to call. Advocates are there to talk with friends and family, neighbors and coworkers— anyone— about how to be supportive if someone turns to you for help.
doned children and teenagers on the streets of Cusco who are at high risk. Founded in 2002 by Alcides Jordan Cerda, former police officer and director of the orphanage, currently cares for 17 children ages 6-18. They are a non-governmental, nonprofit organization that works in permanent coordination with the family court organization. They survive on the service and contributions of volunteers who help generously without expecting anything in return. Its director and founder Alcides Jordan Alicia Cerda and his wife, a nurse by profession, spend their days coordinating with volunteers and different nonprofits groups to help with working on the orphanage and working with the children dealing with the personal care and making sure they have proper food and shelter to live. With just
and professional individual for their adult life. I first visited the orphanage on May 1 with a coordinator from the Spanish school I was attending. What I thought was going to be a 45-minute bus trip turned into a 1-mile walk followed by an 80-minute bus ride followed by a 1.5-mile walk each way. Fortunately a friend showed me some different bus routes and cut my travel to 4 miles walking and 2-2.5 hours bus time. On my first visit I met Alcides, the local who started the orphanage, and a group from Texas who were pouring the uprights for the building I would be working on. Though the Texas group was only there for two days it’s my understanding they provided much of the materials I would be using. My work at Azul Wasi started May 5. After a long hot week (got pretty burnt) we finished form-

ing up and setting the rebar on the second story Friday at noon, then the real fun started when we fired up the concrete mixer. All said and done, we mixed and moved about 30,000 pounds of concrete in 6 hours and finished pouring the second floor in the dark. After finishing the second floor concrete we had used up the materials they had so I took some time to travel with a friend while they gathered more materials. The plan was to try to finish the first floor when I returned or as much of it as we could. I returned to Azul Wasi on June 9 to find that though they had got
a load of boulders that would serve as fill for the floor (we will be busting them down to size the old-fashioned way) they had not been able to find enough money for the other materials yet. Though it was a set back, I began work again anyway starting with removing the form boards and bracing while cleaning up the construction site. It was a lot different this time around and lucky for me. There were a few volunteers staying at the orphanage who we’re helping, a group from Arizona to paint the buildings and plant the garden. Continued on page 9
But what if we didn’t have to wait until things were awful to intervene? What if we could stop this violence before it started? Domestic violence is preventable and talking with people of all ages about relationships is a key part of prevention. No one is too young or too old to think about what a healthy relationship looks and feels like. It’s never too early, and it’s never too late, to talk about how we deserve to be treated. Conversations build expectations, and talking with our loved ones lets us in on what they’re going through. Imagine how much easier it would be for our friends to turn to us for help if talking about our relationships was something we already did. To find the domestic violence program in your community, visit wscadv.org or call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or 1-800-787-3224 (TTY). wasi, from page 6 In between their work projects I got a lot of help cleaning up and digging out the foundation. I also was joined by Sam from Alabama, who is taking Spanish classes for the first half of the day and still makes the long trip out to put in a few hours in the afternoon, oh, and not to forget the kids helping with everything. So my second work week ended with everything cleaned up, half a 5-gallon bucket full of nails pulled out of boards, two-thirds of the foundation dug out and the hope we might get a

load of bricks to start the walls. Starting the third week I was joined by my friend Claudia from Switzerland (who was born in Alaska). On Monday there was a big stack of bricks waiting for us so with help from Peter, another volunteer, we finished digging the last section of foundation and we’re ready for building walls. When we arrived Tuesday morning John, a local who I had worked with on the second story, was just starting the first row of bricks, we joined him and by the end of the day had finished the starter course and several rows up the back of the building.
Wednesday was more of the same, just laying brick after brick, but we got more of an idea how it would look finished. Instead of going all the way up, the walls would be finished with windows making our job much easier. Thursday it was down to John myself and a few of the kids. We finished the outer walls in good time but ran out of concrete mix
so we quit earlier than usual, which gave them a chance to watch some soccer and me to get home before dark. Friday morning came with Alcides bringing the last four bags of concrete we needed. The day went good and though there were only two inside walls to build, being 10 feet tall they took us all day. So with the third week done and the walls finished my goal of

finishing the walls and floors is within reach. I’m actually trying to raise some money so I can finish a lot of the project before I leave here. I have just set up a gofundme account, as soon as it’s approved I will send the link and post it on Facebook. Thank you, Joe Soha Oropesa, Peru

Jim Chaney, acting CEO and CFO at Forks Community Hospital, updated West End Business members at the June 11 meeting on what is happening at the hospital. Chaney, who has been at FCH for 2 1/2 years, has taken on additional responsibilities recently and told the group recruitment for a new CEO will be ongoing for the next six months. Once one is found Chaney will resume as CFO. A Community Development grant the hospital received will be used for remodeling of a new front entrance for the ER and general waiting area, as well as a new canopy for patients and the ambulance area and other modifications to the emergency department. New digital mammography was started in April — this new unit emits the least dose of radiation of any unit on the market and Forks is one of the first hospitals to offer this machine. The hospital continues to bring in specialists from outside the area so that patients can receive service without traveling, offering many orthopedic surgeries, with therapy follow-up. He mentioned that Dr. Dickson has announced his retirement in June 2015 and recruitment of doctors is ongoing. With recent additions of Dr. Reveron, Kelly Keys and Donna West both ARNPs, also mentioning that many of West’s clients have
followed her to the Bogachiel Clinic from Sequim were she was before. With physician recruitment an ongoing challenge for rural communities the hospital makes this a top priority. Watch for more information on the upcoming Healthy Family Fair in August, sponsored by the Forks hospital and Swedish Medical Center.

Finding dedicated workers with a great work ethic can be a challenge at times, but Three Rivers Resort & Guide Service, has found this dedication in its employees. One employee in particular, who has a developmental disability, is said to be very dependable and enjoys his job at the resort according to coowner Ruby Swagerty. Swagerty said the key was matching his skills and interests to their employment needs. She said he enjoyed picking up rocks, so they translated that into picking up trash around the resort. He also likes tearing and stacking paper, so he tears and stacks their cardboard for recycling. An unexpected bonus Swagerty said is that team morale and bonding have improved since hiring him. Her other employees are attached to him and are disappointed if he’s not scheduled during their shift. Swagerty also owns Forks Athletic & Aquatics Club and has a young lady with a developmental disability currently cleaning and sanitizing gym equipment as part of a work assessment program through Concerned Citizens; one of three employment providers contracted with Clallam County Health & Human Services-Developmental Disabilities to provide employment supports for individuals with developmental disabilities. The other two providers are Pierce Jones & Associates and Morningside. Three Rivers Resort & Guide Service recently was presented the Clallam County Health & Human Services Business Leadership Advisory Committee Employer of the Quarter Award by Sara King, associate support supervisor at The Home Depot, and member of the Business Leadership Advisory Committee.
