Preparing for the season on seal pups Submitted by the Whale Museum

Summer has arrived… and that means it is time for harbor seal pups. If you have spent any time in the San Juan Islands, you have probably noticed that we have a lot of harbor seals. In fact, the Salish Sea probably has the most dense harbor seal population in the

world. These seals are also the only pinnipeds that can be found here year-round. Every June through August, nearly 2,000 new seal pups are born around the islands. Although it can be thrilling to see these adorable, largeeyed youngsters sunning on the beach or bobbing in the water next to their mothers,

Mother and pup. it is important to make sure that our bustling human population does not hinder the seals’ well-being. Harbor seal pups found alone on beaches generate a lot of concern from local residents as well as visitors. How can you help? The best thing to do is to give it space. Zero human interference actually maximizes the pup’s chances for survival. If you come across a pup this season, please follow these simple rules: Do not touch or move it; do not feed it; do not pour water on it; do not try to drive it back into the water. Do keep people and dogs at least 100 yards away (it’s the law). And do call the stranding hotline at 1-800562-8832. Another way you can help

is to make sure you are not polluting and pick up trash when you see it; one of last season’s harbor seal pups was recently sighted with a plastic packaging band digging into its skin. Something as simple as cutting through plastic loops before throwing them away can save lives. Unfortunately, even without human interference, not

all of this summer’s pups will survive to be adults. The natural mortality rate for harbor seal pups is very high The harbor seal population in the San Juan Islands has not grown or decreased for almost a decade. This doesn’t leave a lot of room for new seals. Its hard to think about seal pups dying, but they do provide food and nourishment

for dozens of other local animals, from bald eagles to sea stars to crabs. Please help us respect these natural cycles for the benefit of the entire Salish Sea ecosystem! Report all stranded marine mammals (dead or alive) to the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network at 1-800562-8832.

There are no bears, wolves or mountain lions on the island. When the sun goes down there is little to fear from the wild world when it comes to large predators. Smaller mammals like the raccoon are wild and can cause problems especially when humans interact with them as if they were domestic creatures. But Shona Aitken, education coordinator of Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation, says raccoon attacks in the islands are very rare.

Raccoon in a tree. According to Aitken, if an animal is fed consistently by people they lose their wariness of humans, and they can become more confident. She added that raccoons, which are omnivores, mostly forage for smaller meals like snails, slugs and berries. “They eat a wide range of stuff,” she said. “In general they are not hunters.” Adult raccoons weigh 15 to 40 pounds, their weight

being a result of genetics, age, available food, and habitat location. Some males have weighed in at over 60 pounds. The average life span of a raccoon in the wild is two to three years. As long as raccoons are kept out of human homes, not cornered, and not treated as pets, they are not dangerous, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Raccoon populations can get quite large in urban areas, due to hunting and trapping restrictions, few

predators, and human-supplied food, according to the USFWS’s website. During this time of year, raccoons are out more frequently in the day searching for food to feed their kits. Aitken added that the best way to deal with raccoons is to make sure they are not enticed to come onto your property. This can be accomplished in a few steps: 1: Spray your yard and deck with unpleasant scents like coyote urine (available for purchase online), lemon SEE RACCOON, PAGE 8

Alleged meth dealer on Orcas Island to stand trial in early September By Scott Rasmussen Journal editor

An Orcas Island man accused of selling methamphetamine out of his Rosario-area home is slated to stand trial in early September on felony drug and weapons charges. On July 27, David Atanas Andreev, 39, pleaded not guilty in San Juan County Superior Court to three counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a Class B felony, and to two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, a Class C felony. He was released three days after his arrest, pend-

ing a Sept. 5 trial date, on $75,000 bail. Andreev was taken into custody June 13 after local deputies and detectives, backed by a search warrant and assisted by a Bellingham-based K-9 unit, descended on his Geisers Way home. Authorities seized cash, scales, packaging materials, firearms and drugs, including 24 grams of methamphetamine and eight ounces of packaged marijuana, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Sheriff’s department. The bundle of confiscated items include a .22-caliber rifle, a .32-caliber revolver and ammunition. Andreev,

convicted in 2005 of firstdegree possession of stolen property, is prohibited from possessing firearms as the result of that felony conviction. According to the sheriff’s department, the arrest was the culmination of a four-month investigation into suspicious activity in and around the Rosario-area home. That activity, such as a steady flow of vehicles at all hours of the day, many of which reportedly stayed for only a brief period, prompted numerous complaints to the sheriff’s department and a meeting of concerned neighbors in late April that was attended, at the neigh-

bors’ request, by the county prosecuting attorney. A Class B felony, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver carries maximum penalties of 5 years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both; however the standard range of sentencing set by the state is 21-27 months for a first offense. According to court documents, authorities believe

that Andreev’s alleged drug-dealing may have prompted a break-in and attempted armed robbery at his Geisers Way home in December 2013. Detectives suspect the defendant in that case, who has since pleaded guilty to attempted assault and burglary, believed Andreev would be in possession of a good deal of cash because of the alleged sale of illicit drugs.

Domestic Violence Affects Us All

A

t this time last year, most of us were excitedly planning for summer vacations, home improvement projects and BBQs. But for three Washington women – Sheila Asselin, Brenda Lee Bail and Amanda Blanchard –July brought an end to all those things. Last July, Sheila, 57, was killed by her husband. Brenda Lee, 48, was strangled by her fiancé. Amanda, 41, was killed by her fiancé days before her wedding. All three were victims of domestic violence. In 2013, 35 people in Washington – including three children – were killed as a result of domestic violence. Thousands more endure daily verbal, physical and sexual abuse. Domestic violence touches more people than you may realize including children and men. Some are able to break away from the destructive cycle, but too many often die trapped in it. Deciding to leave is one of the most risky and terrifying decision most victims will ever make. It’s a decision some victims will only get to make once. Imagine picking up the phone and making a call to someone you hope can provide a safe place to flee and being told there’s no room. That’s the reality for tens of thousands of victims every day.

That’s why supporting organizations like the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence is so important. They make sure victims have a safe place to turn and provide important prevention tools for teaching our sons and daughters how to develop healthy relationships, training ourselves to identify signs of abuse among our coworkers, friends and family, and helping abusers break the cycle. I’ve seen how much of a difference every dollar makes for groups like WSCADV. Their Refuse To Abuse 5k is an easy way to raise awareness and resources for an organization that provides a lifeline to thousands of families every year.

If you can’t join the 5k, I encourage you to learn more about identifying the signs of DV and how to help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is a 24-hour resource to keep handy if you know someone in danger – 800.799.7233. Trudi Inslee First Lady of Washington State

Two islanders, who stumbled upon the dog on San Juan Island and took the photos, called the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department to report the situation. A deputy arrived on the scene around the time the dog’s owner appeared. According to Undersheriff Bruce Distler, the owner then took the dog to the vet, where it was euthanized. The case is currently under investigation by the sheriff’s department. If a person is found guilty of animal cruelty they could face a fine up to $10,000, imprisonment up to five years and would be prohibited permanently from owning or caring for any similar animals after a conviction.

A host of ferry lovers, history buffs and local dignitaries made their way to the waterfront, assembling around the ferry terminal, to see her go. Sunday, July 29, marked the final sailing of the oldest boat in Washington State Ferries’ fleet, and state and local officials memorialized the event with photos, gifts and speeches onboard her deck. Known by many as the “Queen of the Northern Fleet,” the Evergreen State cruised out of Friday Harbor for the very last time escorted by a U.S. Coast Guard boat and with San Juan Island Fire Department’s Fireboat Confidence in the lead, casting aloft a steady stream of water at the head of the procession. Bill and Schevaun Massey of Anacortes, accompanied by friend Jan Conklin, boarded the boat in Anacortes and made the roundtrip back home to be part of the 2:15 p.m. sailing and sendoff. They memorialized the occasion with chocolate ice cream cones on the sunsplashed Sunday afternoon. “It’s sort of a historic thing,” Conklin said. “We’ve never been on a final trip

It’s been a mainstay on the inter-island route and the international run for decades. San Juan Island’s Robert Demar boarded the boat with a copy of “Nautical Highways” in hand. The book focuses on four ferries that plied the San Juan waterways in the 1990s, the E-State included, and also features his photographs. In addition to its maritime legacy, Demar noted that for some, himself included, the

ferry also calls to mind an air of romance. He and his then-bride-to-be boarded the E-State, bound for Sidney, B.C., married on Vancouver Island, and returned to Friday Harbor as newlyweds. Similar in size to the Evergreen State, the Klahowya, with 87-vehicle capacity, will serve as its replacement. The Klahowya, which means “greetings” in Native American/Chinook, was originally constructed in 1958 and retrofitted in ‘95. The San Juans are expected to be served by a newly constructed 144-auto ferry by late 2015. For many, like Catherine McKenna-Smith, memories of the Evergreen State run deep. Like Demar, she and her husband, Joseph, rode the ferry to Vancouver Island 20 years ago to get married. It was the first ferry that Joseph, a former San Juan County planning director, ever rode in his first-ever trip from Washington D.C., where he worked for the FBI, to Puget Sound. In the mid 1950s, Catherine McKenna-Smith’s father was the purser on the Evergreen State. She later worked for the ferry system for several years. The Mount Vernon couple boarded the Evergreen State in Friday Harbor to commemorate the ties that bind on the ship’s final sailing. “Every Sunday I would ride the boat with my dad,” McKenna-Smith said. “That’s before there were any galleys and my mother would make us fried chicken for lunch. Those memories are very special to me.”

Abbey Road LIVE! outdoor concert with opening act Caroline Aiken is Friday, July 18 at 7 p.m. The show will be outside, weather permitting. Bring chairs and blankets. There will be a beer garden. Tickets are adults $15, youth $10, and a family of four $35. Since 2002, Abbey Road LIVE! has been rocking the music of the Beatles at clubs, theatres, festivals, and private events. Initially a tribute to the monumental “Abbey Road” album, the band has expanded its scope to include more than 100 Beatles tunes, from all eras of the Fab Four’s career. The band specializes in complete, start-tofinish album performances of masterpieces such as “Abbey Road”, “Magical Mystery Tour”, “Rubber Soul”, “Revolver” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band.” Abbey Road LIVE! is not your typical Beatle look-alike tribute act; don’t expect mop-top haircuts and vintage Rickenbacker guitars. Rather, this show is about bringing to life some of the more mature and complex Beatles material in a raw and spirited fashion, while remaining true to the original recordings. Combining attention to detail with a creative exuberance, the band always delights its audiences with its diverse repertoire of hits and more obscure favorites. Abbey Road LIVE! is made up of four allstar musicians from the infamous Athens, Georgia music

scene that gave the world R.E.M., Widespread Panic, and B-52s. Collectively the band members have recorded and toured regularly with Cosmic Charlie, Charlie Mars, and Fuzzy Sprouts. Individual band members have also collaborated with acts such as Indigo Girls, Juliana Hatfield, Mike Houser (Widespread Panic), Danielle Howle and Lemonheads. At a typical Abbey Road LIVE! show, audiences young and old can found gleefully singing along with every word. The opening act for Abbey Road LIVE! is Caroline Aiken. A gifted musician, Caroline Aiken began traveling across the globe – 1969, performing as a teenager. After years of touring: New York, California, South America, Seattle/ Northwest, and Europe, she moved back to Atlanta in 1986, where she anchored the city’s acoustic and folk scene and influenced up and coming artists like the Indigo Girls. Caroline’s bluesy voice, masterful finger picking guitar style and hypnotic stage presence made her the artist of choice to open for such diverse music legends as Arlo Guthrie, Muddy Waters, Doc Watson, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Little Feat, the Beach Boys, and Richie Havens. Caroline will open the show with a short set of her original songs, and later in the evening she will join Abbey Road LIVE! to add a twist to some of your favorite Beatles tunes.
