fter a late start getting cars to arrive, the Return to Renton Car Show took over downtown Renton last Sunday. An estimated 4,800 people were projected to be there, according to event organizer Jim Medzegian. “It was a late-arriving crowd,” he said. “We thought we were down cars, but they were late arriving.” More than 450 cars were expected to line the streets around the Piazza and come they did from modern models to race cars to classics such as the “Miss Pearl,” 1929 Model A Ford owned by Gary Holmes of Burien. At last count, 425 cars were at the car show. “Oh gosh; it’s nice,” said Holmes of the car show. “It’s good, a lot of fun, a lot of people.” This is Holmes second time competing in the Return to Renton Car Show. With the first wave of business licenses released on Monday and several marijuana retail outlets opening on Tuesday, Renton retail license lottery winners were still preparing to open their stores, despite not being in the initial batch of license approvals. Two of the three lottery winners have had to find new locations since city zoning laws for retail marijuana business have changed since they filed their applications with the Washington State Liquor Control Board, but both are searching for new locations in the city. The third lottery winner is just waiting for her license and will be ready to open. “We’re still waiting to hear from the Liquor Control Board,” Miles Alexander, owner of the Northwest Cannabis Emporium, said Tuesday. t this time last year, most of us were excitedly planning for summer vacations, home improvement projects and BBQs. But for three Washington women – Sheila Asselin, Brenda Lee Bail and Amanda Blanchard –July brought an end to all those things. Last July, Sheila, 57, was killed by her husband. Brenda Lee, 48, was strangled by her fiancé. Amanda, 41, was killed by her fiancé days before her wedding. All three were victims of domestic violence. In 2013, 35 people in Washington – including three children – were killed as a result of domestic violence. Thousands more endure daily verbal, physical and sexual abuse.
No one injured when small plane slides off runway BY BRIAN BECKLEY bbeckley@rentonreporter.com
The runway at Renton Municipal Airport was closed for about an hour July 3 following an accident involving a single-engine plane. No one was injured and no fuel was spilled in the incident. According to Airport Manager Ryan Zulauf, the pilot of a singleengine Cessna was practicing “touch-and-gos” when the plane exited the runway. A touch-and-go is a practice landing in which the pilot lands the plane but immediately takes off again before stopping the engine. Zulauf said the plane accidentally
exited the runway and clipped a taxiway sign, which sheared a bolt off the plane’s wing. Firefighters were called to the scene but left soon after arrival. The runway was back open within the hour. According to Zulauf, accidents at the Renton Airport are few and far between. “It’s so long ago I can’t remember our last accident,” he said. “Which is a good thing.”

Domestic violence touches more people than you may realize including children and men. Some are able to break away from the destructive cycle, but too many often die trapped in it. Deciding to leave is one of the most risky and terrifying decision most victims will ever make. It’s a decision some victims will only get to make once. Imagine picking up the phone and making a call to someone you hope can provide a safe place to flee and being told there’s no room. That’s the reality for tens of thousands of victims every day.
That’s why supporting or-
ganizations like the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence is so important. They make sure victims have a safe place to turn and provide important prevention tools for teaching our sons and daughters how to develop healthy relationships, training ourselves to identify signs of abuse among our coworkers, friends and family, and helping abusers break the cycle. I’ve seen how much of a difference every dollar makes for groups like WSCADV. Their Refuse To Abuse 5k is an easy way to raise awareness and resources for an organization that provides a lifeline to thousands of families every year. If you can’t join the 5k, I encourage you to learn more about identifying the signs of DV and how to help. “It was another fantastic event,” Milosevich said. “All of the credit goes to the car show committee who meet throughout the year. It is a well-organized group of individuals who have shared their love for classic cars with providing resources to the police department that we can in turn utilize to support youth programs in the city.” This year the car show raised $17,500 for the Renton Police Department’s youth programs. “Our preliminary financial results indicate the car show can donate $17,500 to the Renton Police Department Youth Education Fund for the third year in a row,” said Medzegian via email on Wednesday. “We are very pleased with the financial results.”

proper zones for both the state and the city, but the backlog at the state is keeping her from being ready to open. “We’ve got all our ducks in a row,” she said. “Now it’s a matter of waiting for that phone call from the LCB.” Alexander’s business will be located in the Highlands, in a plaza at the corner of Sunset and Union Avenue Northeast. Originally, the business was to be in a small building just up Union, but a spot in the plaza opened since her application and they are now intending to move in there. For the other Renton businesses, the location is proving difficult. “I am actively out looking,” said Myles Kahn of Seattle Tribal Partners. Kahn’s business finished third in the lottery of nine applicants. However, due to a change in zoning, his location is no longer one zoned for retail marijuana businesses. Earlier this year, the City Council adopted an ordinance placing marijuana retail businesses in the same zoning category as taverns. The decision limited the number of zones available to marijuana retailers from 13 to six. The 1,000-foot buffers around sensitive areas, approved by voters during the passage of I-502, also remain in place. Kahn’s business was originally to be placed in a plaza the south end of the city on South 41st Street, but the zoning change eliminated that location. Kahn said the tavern zoning is making it difficult to find a location for his nascent business. “They didn’t make it terribly easy,” he said, but added that the city’s planning department has been very helpful as he tries to navigate the new laws. Kahn also said he is also getting some “pushback” from
landlords concerned about the nature of his shop and said some of the other applicants from Renton who are located within the proper zones appear to be holding on to their locations in the hopes that those who did receive licenses will be unable to find suitable locations and give up their spot in the order. In addition, Kahn said he was worried a little about the supply in the state and in the possibility of running out of product and was therefore waiting a little before opening. Eric Gaston, owner of the city’s top lottery winner, the Dormouse, also found his business in a location no longer zoned for retail marijuana and was also actively searching for a new location. Alexander, meanwhile, said she has already talked to an architect and security firms and should be ready to provide “safe, legal access to something the voters of Washington voted for” within a few weeks of getting state approval. “We are ready,” she said. “We physically can be ready to open within four to six weeks.” LCB spokesman Mikhail Carpenter said the licenses that were issued this week were the ones ready to go and more would be licensed as they were completed, though he had no estimate for individual shops. “Each application is different and the licensing process takes a variable amount of time for each applicant,” he said this week. to the 300 block of Lind Avenue Northwest at about 7:55 a.m. Friday when a neighbor noticed dark smoke coming from a power meter mounted on the side of the house. Firefighters attacked the fire and evacuated the occupants. As they did so, they discovered a large marijuana grow operation in the house. The house’s electrical junction box had been rewired to feed the lights and ventilation supporting the grow, and this may have overloaded the electrical supply system. Narcotics dwetectives responded and collected evidence at the scene. As of Wednesday, no arrests had been made, but the investigation was still ongoing.

State school chief tries to take shame out of NCLB Act State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn doesn’t want to use the word “failing” when talking about Washington’s public schools. So he’s figured out how school district leaders in Washington can exclude it from letters they must send parents at schools deemed as failing to make the grade on a federal curve known as adequate yearly progress. At the same time, Dorn is trying to convince the U.S. Department of Education to drop its demand that such letters be sent as required under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. That’s because the rules are such that letters will wind up going to parents of children at pretty much every school in Washington. Avoiding an ‘F’ requires students to perform at grade level in math and reading. So when standardized test time rolls around, if a student doesn’t pass in grades 3-8 and 10, their school likely won’t show enough progress to quash the need to notify parents. It’s a dilemma faced in just about every state. But Washington is the only state facing the letter requirement because the others snagged waivers from the U.S. Department of Education. This state had such a waiver but lost it this year following a legislative deadlock on including student test scores in the evaluation of teacher performance. Dorn last month asked federal education officials to again waive the requirement to send letters. He also pledged to make sure parents are well aware of their school’s progress, and their options, which include transferring their child to another campus or receive tutoring. His chances of succeeding are far south of slim. It relies on the feds giving up what is arguably their most punitive tool against states which fall off the NCLB waiver wagon, as Washington did. The letters publicly shame individual schools and entire districts. Many parents will be quick studies on what’s really going on behind the scenes. Dorn is worried about consequences in the community if these bureaucratic badges of dishonor are sent out. “The letters’ misrepresentation that our schools are failing will erode public support for local funding — and, we think, will needlessly and dangerously distract Washington’s voters and lawmakers at a time when transparent, truthful information about our schools is most critical,” Dorn wrote to Assistant Secretary of Education Deborah Delisle. In the meantime, Dorn drafted a model letter for districts that doesn’t specifically say schools are failing. Rather, it explains in some detail the process of how the school did not meet one or more measurements for progress and are considered to be in “Step 1 of Improvement” — a term ripped from the federal law itself. And it closes by pointing out the fault is not with the school but with the federal law. Political reporter Jerry Cornfield can be reached at 360-352-8623 or jcornfield@heraldnet.com.
But I didn’t dial that number; maybe it was evil hairball Hal Many of us believe in all sorts of plots and conspiracies. Most may be goofy, but I have come across one directly aimed at me – evil little hairball Hal. It involves my cell phone that apparently has a mind of its own; a smarter brain than mine (not a stretch). I was tipped off to the plot when my boneheaded phone made a call, for no apparent reason. This wasn’t the first time and I never know to whom or when it will strike. I’ll be stumbling around and suddenly I hear a voice coming from my pocket. That’s a ball of fun. About a week ago the beast in my pocket started calling a number I didn’t even know was in my contacts. I just bought this dumb device and it suddenly knows my history. I am certain it is reading my thoughts and making calls to squeal on me. It’s like carrying an annoying third grader named Hal in my pocket. You know, the kid who sat in the front row always raising his hand first, with the right, stupid answer. After recess, hairball Hal was always in a Dennis Box

At any moment this phone will suddenly pick someone to call, seemingly without logic or reason. But I think there is a pattern I detect, a hairball Hal pattern. Hal must have grown into a twisted adult and now sits in a windowless room with pasty skin devising a phone to squeal on my seven rotten sins. I’m pretty sure he has invented a new set of seven sins. All the things that used to be OK when I was in third grade, but since the advent of new math, a bunch of new bad has been invented. I suspect the only solution is to revert back to the one phone that always worked and never made a squealer call – two Dixie cups and a string. Let hairball Hal try to work his evil ways with that phone. Dennis Box is editor of the Enumclaw Courier-Herald. He can be reached at dbox@ courierherald.com.

coreopsis and most plants with gray foliage will take the heat but there are many more that will thrive in our cool summer climate if you improve the soil and water during droughts. If lots of color is your goal, then perennials are not perfect replacements for annuals or bedding plants. Most perennials flower for a few weeks instead of many months and you may need to stake, deadhead and divide the perennial plants to keep them looking their best. Perhaps you can compromise with a mix of annuals and perennials. Visit the nursery all year long not just in the spring and you’ll discover perennial plants that flower in winter (hellebores and heather) as well as summer bloomers like delphinium and salvia and heat-lovers that flower in the fall such as mums, asters, and sedum ‘Autumn Joy’. In the vegetable garden you can still plant seeds of beets, bush beans, carrots and chard as well as crops with shorter growing season. Check the garden centers for healthy-looking tomato plants sold in one gallon pots as these can still be transplanted into the garden or grown as container plants. Perhaps tomato plants bought in July are like pets rescued from the pound – sometimes not perfect but extra grateful for an adoption that will save them from the compost pile.
a real treat to harvest but now they look like they are growing out of control. C.W., Kent Congratulations on finding yourself in this wonderful jam. Raspberries are best pruned after they are done bearing fruit and the type that produces berries only once in mid-summer can be pruned by cutting the canes or branches that held berries all the way to the ground. These older canes will be brown in color. Leave the young green canes and tame them between two rows of stiff wire, bending the tops and tying them to horizontal supports – strips of nylon stocking make good plant ties. There are also “Ever bearing” raspberries these produce fruit all summer. Cut these canes to half their height as soon as the top half stops producing berries and starts to turn brown. The bottom half of the cane should be left to mature and produce berries next summer.

The second week of July is not too late to plant some vegetables or add some summer color. You can pick up some bargains on bedding plants and hanging baskets this month and as long as these blooming plants are not too root bound they will continue to flower for another two months.

Renton football player Elijah Clayton has been selected to attend USA Football’s National Team Development Games this month in College Station, Texas. The event is July 14 through July 19 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex. Clayton will be one of more than 180 high school athletes participating in this event, joining an elite group of football players from across the United States. A linebacker and quarterback with the Renton Indians, Clayton will have the opportunity to earn a roster spot on the U.S. National Team that will compete against Canada in the International Bowl. The U.S. National Development Games are not considered an all-star event by the NCAA or NFHS as they serve as the key evaluation event for the national team selection. The program was built to allow the best athletes across the county to compete on the field in order to gain exposure, develop their skills and fundamentals and compete for a spot on the U.S. National Team.
U.S. National Team participants are chosen based on talent and character. Players will compete in a 7-on-7 tournament, jamboree and full length games. Players will learn USA Football’s Heads Up Football player health and safety curriculum featuring proper equipment fitting, concussion education, heat preparedness and hydration education and proper tackling techniques. USA Football scouts will evaluate the talent and ultimately build the U.S. National Team rosters. Scouts will also compile a list of top prospects from each event that will be distributed to every college football program in the country. Because this is a national team event, current NCAA coaches are granted permission from the NCAA to serve as instructors at the National Development Games. This provides an excellent opportunity for the athletes in attendance to work first hand with college coaches as well as former NFL players and top area high school coaches.
Renton football coach Ponds leaves to be with family BY BRIAN BECKLEY bbeckley@rentonreporter.com
Renton football coach Donald Ponds announced last month that he was leaving the program to move to Eastern Washington to be closer to family. Ponds will be replaced by Tim Tramp, pending board approval. According to an email from Renton School District Athletic Director Brian Kaelin, Ponds will continue his teaching/ coaching career in the Walla Walla area. “Coach Ponds and his coaching staff have done an outstanding job with the football program at Renton High,” Kaelin said. “We appreciate all the work that he and his staff have done, and we wish him and his family all the best.” On Wednesday, the school announced the hiring of Tramp. According to Kaelin, Tramp has 14 years of experience as a head football coach. In those 14

years, he directed his teams to post season play nine times. Tramp has also been named Coach of the Year three times, including a 2003 KingCo 4A Conference award.
For the past several years, Tramp has served as an assistant coach in the area as he’s worked on obtaining his administrators credential. He takes great pride in developing a quality program both
on and off the field, and is committed to the advancement of young people in preparing them for life after high school. Kaelin said his philosophy and commitment mesh well with the Renton
School District mission. “We are excited that we were able to hire an experienced head coach that can continue to build the Renton High School football program both on and off the field,” he said.

Ivar’s at Gene Coulon park expanding to include grill
He wasn’t in yard just to urinate The following information was compiled from Renton Police Department case reports. BY DEAN A. RADFORD dradford@rentonreporter.com
The 50-year-old Seattle man needed somewhere to urinate June 28, so he went through a fence into the backyard of a house on Jones Avenue Northeast. That’s what he told a Renton Police officer when he was stopped on southbound Interstate 405 near the West Valley Highway exit. In the back of his truck was a load of scrap metal that a neighbor saw him carrying from the backyard. The neighbor was watching the house for the owner. The suspect didn’t know why he just didn’t go to a bathroom in a nearby business. The officer asked him whether it was reasonable to climb through a fence and into a yard just to urinate. He knows it was not and it was also wrong. But he did deny taking the metal
pipe. He was booked into the SCORE regional jail for investigation of second-degree trespass and thirddegree theft.
Meth user bites ER worker’s thumb A 33-year-old Seattle woman being treated for methamphetamine usage June 28 bit the thumb of a staff member at Valley Medical Center’s emergency room. The woman became verbal when her treatment was completed and she was discharged, waving her arms and slamming a pelvic-exam cart with her fists. Fearing damage to the cart and injury to the woman, the staff member attempted to restrain her by grabbing her hands from the front. She pulled her hands toward her mouth and bit the staff member on the left thumb, puncturing the skin. He was treated. The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of assault.
window in a home on Northeast 12th Street, where a jewelry box was stolen. The suspect tripped the alarm system but grabbed the jewelry box from a dressing room and fled out the front door. Neighbors didn’t report hearing the alarm sounding.
Two teenagers robbed at knife-point Two teenagers walking along Northeast Eighth Street July 1 were asked whether they wanted to smoke with three men who pulled next to them in a blue sedan. They ignored the request. The car then stopped and the three got out. One of the men pointed a pocket knife at the 17-year-old’s body from about a foot away. Another passenger pointed a pocket knife at the 18-year-old. The three demanded the teens’ wallets. One handed his over, but one of the suspects took the other teen’s wallet from his back pocket. They then drove off. The teens provided descriptions. One suspect was wearing a black beanie.
Ivar’s at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park is looking to expand with a new outdoor grill. SUBMITTED. BY TRACEY COMPTON tcompton@rentonreporter.com
Grilled seafood is coming to Coulon Park. Ivar’s at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park is working on a limited expansion to their restaurant there. Ivar’s at Coulon is considering adding an outdoor grill, so they can do more than have fried fish on their menu, according to Peter Renner, City of Renton facilities director. The company needs approval from the Washington state Recreation and Conservation Office, which

The City of Renton this week activated the flashing school beacons at nine Renton schools, alerting motorists of the 20 mph speed zones through Aug. 7. The zones will be strictly enforced. As part of the Renton School District’s Science Exploration Project, nine schools will be open weekdays beginning this past Monday through Thursday, Aug. 7. The flashing school beacons will be activated for the start-up and dismissal times, one half hour before and after each time, and the 20 mph speed zones will be strictly enforced. The nine schools that will have flashing school beacons and 20 mph
school zones include: Benson Hill; Cascade; Highlands; Kennydale; Meadow Crest; Sierra Heights; Talbot Hill; Honeydew; and Tiffany Park. Four schools have speed safety cameras installed (Benson Hill, Cascade and Talbot Hill and Honeydew) and they will be activated on the days that school is in session. Signs have been posted at the speed safety camera locations to alert drivers that cameras are in use. The cameras operate during specific school times and capture still photographs and video of every vehicle that exceeds the school zone speed limit. Vehicles exceeding the speed limit through the school zones will
be photographed, and those images will be reviewed by the Renton Police Department to determine if a citation is to be issued. The registered owner of the offending car will be issued a ticket for $124 if the 20 mph school zone speed limit is exceeded by 6 to 15 mph and $250 if the speed limit is exceeded by 16 mph or more. Drivers are asked to always obey speed limits, and during the summer months be particularly aware that kids are out of school and may be present at any time of the day. For more information on the speed safety cameras, contact Clark Wilcox at 425-430-7500.

Ask An Expert.... Taking your dog on the family vacation can make for a great trip, if you plan carefully. Safety: A crate should be used for your dog’s safety when traveling. Crates are available from most pet supply stores. Be sure to provide plenty of water and a favorite toy to make your dog as comfortable as possible. Also be sure the crate…. • is large enough to allow the dog to stand, turn and lie down • is strong, with handles or grips, and free of interior protrusions • has a leak-proof bottom covered with plenty of absorbent material • has ventilation on opposing sides, with exterior rims or knobs to prevent blocked airflow • has a “Live Animal” label, arrows upright, with owners name, address, and phone number. Helpful Tips: • Make sure your dog has a sturdy leash and collar. The collar should have identification tags, a license and proof of rabies vaccinations. Your home phone number should be on the tags as well. • You may want to consider a permanent form of ID (such as a microchip or tattoo) that can increase the likelihood of reuniting you with your dog if it gets lost far from home. • Carry recent pictures of your dog with you. If you are accidentally separated, these pictures will help local authorities find your dog. • Take the phone number of your veterinarian and any special medication your dog needs. Some dogs can’t adjust to abrupt changes in diet, so pack your dog’s regular food, bowls and a cooler of water. • If you think you might need to board your dog at some point during your travels, be sure to bring your dog’s complete vaccination records.
