The Aug. 5 primary narrowed the field of prospective political candidates in the 31st District and set up the high-noon showdown in the race for the district’s seat in the Senate. The intraparty primary clash between Sen. Pam Roach, R-Auburn, and Rep. Cathy Dahlquist, R-Enumclaw, drew plenty of smoke and fire, and both will be on the November ballot. As of Monday, Roach maintained a narrow 288 vote lead over Dahlquist, according to the Secretary of State’s website. Roach had a 156 vote margin on election night. In the weeks leading up the primary, Roach faced a series of newspaper reports from The Courier-Herald, Tacoma News Tribune and Seattle Times concerning some of her Senate expense reports payments over the past six years. Roach, who is seeking a seventh term in the Senate, had to pay back about $5,000 to the Senate for mileage that was not allowed, two cell phones and her post office mailbox that received legislative and campaign mail, which is not allowed by state law.
The senator repeatedly said the accuracy of her expense reports were not her responsibility, but the responsibility of the Senate administration. During the weeks Pam Roach leading up to the primary and after the expense reports stories broke in the media, Roach sent an email to The Courier-Herald stating she delivered a letter to the Public Disclosure Commission alleging Dahlquist violated Cathy Dahlquist campaign finance rules. The accuracy or validity of this allegation has not been confirmed. Roach receive 9,077 votes, 40 percent, and Dahlquist had 8,789 votes, good for 39 percent. Lynda Messner, from Bonney Lake, who ran as a Democrat, received 4,551, 20 percent. Messner has been eliminated and Roach and Dahlquist now advance to the general election. In King County, Dahlquist received

Conviction brings 25 years or more By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer
Enumclaw’s Travis Martin Lear was just 25 when he committed his third and final sex crime. Now, he’s facing 25 years behind bars and possibly many more. A King County jury found Lear guilty Aug. 6 of first-degree child molestation, the result of an incident that occurred in early 2013 at the Enumclaw library. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 5 at Kent’s
Regional Justice Center before Judge Chad Allred. Lear’s conviction came with a “predatory offense” stipulation that mandates a minimum incarceration of 25 years but allows a parole board to keep an inmate in prison for life. Lear has been confined to the RJC since his arrest. When Lear headed to the Enumclaw library on the afternoon of Jan. 30, 2013, he had twice been convicted of sex crimes and was a registered, Level 1 sex offender. But
things would only get worse. According to information taken from an Enumclaw Police Department press release and a “probable cause” document prepared by an EPD detective, the library incident unfolded like this. Lear’s 11-year-old victim and her father were visiting the library. She eventually headed to the parking lot, got into their car and was having a snack. A man approached the vehicle and ordered the girl to walk to the library bathroom, threaten-
ing to kill her if she didn’t follow his orders. Fearing for her safety, the young victim complied. The stranger, later identified as Lear, followed the girl into the bathroom and locked the door. He kissed her and molested her before becoming apologetic. The suspect said he didn’t like what he was doing but couldn’t control his “urges.” He told the victim she could leave, but not before issuing

MARY HOLLENBECK Mary Louise (Brown) Hollenbeck, 84, died July 25, 2014, after declining slowly from dementia. She had been a resident of Clark Place in Moscow, Idaho, for six years. She was born April 25, 1930, in Brush, Colo., to Willis Clark and Bernice Louise Brown. The family moved many times through many states, including Colorado, New Mexico, Washington and Montana, where she graduated from high school in Alberton. She then moved to Tacoma, where she met Charles G. Hollenbeck. They were married July 19, 1950. After starting their life together in Burien, Wash., they moved to Enumclaw where they resided 42 years. Her life centered around
her husb a n d , her family and her faith. She was a member of the Mary Hollenbeck Church of Christ and her home was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay, including many a visiting preacher. She took up oil painting later in life and was well known around the area’s art clubs. Due to declining health, she moved to Troy, Idaho, to be close to family. She is survived by daughters Diana (Guy) Buzga of Troy, Idaho, and Laura (David) Peacock of Buna, Texas; sons James (Valerie) Hollenbeck of Winter Garden, Fla., and Joseph Hollenbeck of Bonney Lake; sisters Dorothy (Howard) Botts of Black Diamond and Betty Hoffman of

A celebration of her life is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the Black Diamond Community Center, with a luncheon to follow.
VERDICT FROM 1 another warning: if she told anyone what happened, he said, he would kill her. The victim ran from the building and located her father, who had been searching for her. She told her father what had happened and pointed to Lear as he was walking from the library building. The victim’s father confronted the suspect, who first denied the incident occurred and then stated he had been helping the girl find her abductor. When the suspect fled, the father called 911 and reported the incident. Soon, he and the victim were meeting with police, describing the suspect. The detective working the case realized Lear had been in the police station an hour earlier, meeting with a Department of Corrections officer due to his previous convictions for third-degree rape of a child and third-degree attempted rape of a child. Lear was found at his mother’s Enumclaw home and arrested without incident.

DAVID MOREHOUSE David L. Morehouse died June 28, 2014. He was born Feb. 14, 1937, in a log cabin in a small community near Northome, Minn., the youngest of three boys born to Roy and Mary Morehouse. In 1945, the family moved to the Sumner area and, in 1950, to the Buckley area. He graduated from White River High School in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from Boeing in 1992 after more than 35 years of employment. Upon retirement, he joined up with a group of mostly senior citizens who walked about three miles every morning in the Buckley area. He enjoyed dogs and spoiled every one of them, including his current cocker spaniel Patches.
David made his own decisions in life, including how it would end. On June 15, 2014, he made the decision to discontinue any additional medical treatment. He spent his final days visiting with friends and family and enjoying the foods that he had been unable to eat due to dietary restrictions. He is survived by partner of 45 years Rena Rea, or Liz, as she is known by many, and a sister, Arlene. A memorial is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Buckley cemetery. Faye Nicolai (nee Hess) Faye Nicolai (nee Hess) passed away peacefully at her home, on Wednesday, July 30th surrounded by her loving family. The youngest of seven children, Faye was born on July 2, 1932 in Dover, York County, Pennsylvania to Curtis Monroe Hess and Fairy Pfeiffer Hess. Faye came to the Seattle, Washington area in her late teens to live with her brother Oran and never left. She met and married George Nicolai, and made a home in Hobart, Washington. In 1978 the family moved to Enumclaw, WA, settling in the Veazie Valley.
Meri Margaret Cash
Meri Margaret Cash, 67, of Enumclaw Washington, passed away August 2nd, 2014 with family members by her side. Born the third of four children to Alvin and Dorothy Weston of Enumclaw, Meri attended Enumclaw schools and graduated from EHS in 1964. Married in 1966 to her “Glensie,” she settled and raised her six children in the town she loved. Meri’s dream and passion was to be a wife and mother. She would always say that her greatest accomplishment was her family. Meri enjoyed trips to the ocean, visiting with her sisters and brother, any family event and simply spending time with her husband of 48 years, Glen. Meri had an amazing knack for remembering special dates and family events, always sending a card or calling for the special occasion. Meri worked as a dental assistant and teachers’ assistant before getting the dream job she always wanted- motherhood! Meri spent what she would call her favorite years raising her 6 children building a loving home. Her love for children continued even after her kids were grown and Meri spent many more years providing childcare in her home. Meri is survived by: husband Glen of Enumclaw, children; Julie (Shannon) Igneczi of Pacific, Zack (Jessica) Cash of Buckley, Katie Cash of Enumclaw, Sarah (Austin) Callaway of Covington, Lousiana, Meri Jane Cash of Buckley, Emily (Jeff) Hinkle of Buckley, 10 grandchildren, sister Doravin (Bob) Wilson of Lake Tapps, sister Kathy (Bob) McBeth of Federal Way, brother Doug (Lynn) Weston of Buckley, close family friend Gariann Frey and a very great many more dear friends and extended family that will miss her greatly. A memorial and celebration of Meri’s life will be held at Mt. Rainier Christian Center (43811 244th Ave SE, Enumclaw, WA) on Saturday, August 16th, 2014 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, Meri requested donations to Mt. Rainier Christian Center Children’s Ministries or Northwest Kidney Center-Enumclaw, PO Box 3035 Seattle, WA 981149900 or online at: NWKidney.org/donate. 1115854
back up to half of the damaged lobelia plant and add some fertilizer when you water. If you don’t want to wait for new growth and an encore performance of your thirsty lobelia you can get rid of the entire lobelia plant by cutting off the top of the plant at soil level. Then the more heat-tolerant petunias, zinnias and geraniums will take over your mixed basket. These colorful characters can control their drinking and still be the life of the summer patio parties.
Faye was a loving wife and mother, remembered for so many things, but first and foremost for her kindness to those in need (both the two legged and four legged variety). She gave generously and without hesitation. All God’s creatures were her friends, and her home often included cats, dogs, llamas, ducks, chickens, donkeys, and horses. Faye had a special place in her heart for children, spending many volunteer hours at the local elementary school helping young students discover the world of books. Faye and George faithfully attended Enumclaw High School basketball games for many years and she would keep her children updated on the players achievements. Faye was a fixture at the Enumclaw Starbucks and at The Rainier, where she and George enjoyed trading stories with friends and keeping tabs on the folks around town. Faye was the beloved matriarch of her family, for decades hosting nearly every family gathering. Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving and the 4th of July would find her entire family gathered around her table. Faye was a wonderful cook, especially known for her amazing macaroni and cheese. Her home was landscaped with beautiful flowers, and she had a wonderful vegetable garden for many years. Many hours were spent at the window watching the vast array of birds that came to that garden. Faye leaves behind her husband of 51 years, George Nicolai and her four children Pam Nicolai Guglielminetti (Nick) of Vacaville, CA., Scott Nicolai (Judi) of Ellensburg, WA., Jeff Nicolai (Stephanie) of Enumclaw, WA., and David Nicolai of Enumclaw, as well as her eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A celebration of Faye’s life is planned for Saturday, September 13th in Enumclaw. Details will be published at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Faye’s name to: The Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation www.nwpf.org 400 Mercer Street, Ste. 502 Seattle, WA 98109 Or Sarvey Wildlife Care Center www.sarveywildlife.org PO Box 3590 Arlington, WA 98223

The second week of August is a time not to worry about the lawn but do think about your thirsty rhododendrons and azaleas. Late summer is when these spring-blooming shrubs are deciding how many flowers they should produce next spring. If the soil is dry in August you’ll have fewer rhododendron blooms in May. It is easy to hand water the shallow roots of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias this month and hand watering plants with a hose is a great excuse to wander outdoors and enjoy a summer evening. Provide your thirsty shrubs with at least one inch of water a week to keep them forming flower buds.

Letters Leaders can’t put have peace when public funds at risk Cannot one seeks to destroy “Never put public funds at risk.” These were the words of Courier-Herald Editor Dennis Box as we debriefed each other after a recent city council meeting. The hotly debated issue before the Council was whether to take up to $1.5 million out of reserves to build the Welcome Center and save the $1.3 million Federal Scenic Byway grant we had obtained 12 years earlier, or to drop the project and return the grant to the federal government. Government is not business. Government does not operate, nor is its purpose, the same as a business. Business exists to sell a product or service at a profit. Government exists to serve the public. Making a profit is Rich Elfers not a factor. Columnist Risk-taking is part and parcel of a company’s business plan. Government’s role is to protect the taxpayer’s money. Out of the Council debate came a principle, an axiom, about future governmental decisions at all levels of government: “Don’t speculate with the public’s money.” The grant’s “use by” date was due to run out Sept. 30, if a construction contract had not been signed. Plus, if the Welcome Center was not built, the city might have to pay back an additional nearly $582,000 it had already spent on design. The debate in the Council raged between three who strongly stated we should “build it and they will come” and three who stated the risks were too high and the guaranteed return too low. Chance LaFleur spoke out first against continuing. Jim Hogan, the only councilmember who had served 11 years on Council, followed. Hoke Overland had already made his view clear the previous meeting by making a motion to end spending any more money on plan development. He had been voted down 6-1. Council members Darrel Dickson, Juanita Carstens, and Morgan Irwin voted in favor. Irwin spoke the most eloquently that the building would be an investment for the future that could be sold at a later date for a return on the city’s investment. Mike Sando’s vote turned the tide against building the Welcome Center. Although there were several Council members who argued back and forth after he stated his position, the decision of the Council had already been determined. At that point, I breathed a sign of relief. I was one of two in the audience who had spoken against it before the vote. My arguments were that while I hated to lose $3.3 million in federal grants, I also hated to drain up to $1.5 million from reserves to build a 7,000 square foot building with no definite renters, no interpretive center, and no clear funding source to pay for maintenance or staffing. The right decision was made. Perhaps the other three remaining grants can be used to purchase a building for a Welcome Center, perhaps not. In the meantime, the principle that should govern all governmental decisions held: “Never speculate with public funds.”
LAST WEEK: Would U.S. students be better served if schools went to an all-year schedule?
The hostilities between Israel and the Palestinians have been heating up the past couple months. The internationally recognized terrorist group Hamas has been launching missiles into Israel, thus killing innocent civilians. Fortunately, Israel has the Iron Dome missile defense system which takes out missiles that are being launched into Israel in these unprovoked attacks. The international progressives, leftists, Nazis and anti-semites are launching their very predictable anti-Israeli protests. They demonstrate their rage against Israel when Israel exercises their God-given right of self defense. Would the United States tolerate missiles being launched into the Unites States from Cuba or any other country? OK, maybe some lefties would relish this thought. I will give my map for peace in the Middle East. It is a very simple map for peace filled with common sense. There can be peace in the Middle East if just one of the following things occur: 1. Israel lays down all their weapons
and let Hamas and the Palestineans kill every man, woman and child in Israel and let them take over Israel; or, 2. Hamas and the Palestineans lay down their weapons and love their children more than they hate Israel; or, 3. The Unites States, the United Nations and the rest of the international community allows Israel to take care of business and wipe out their enemy. An enemy that has vowed to wipe Israel out. I hope the No. 2 element occurs, but I am skeptical. It is very easy, you cannot negotiate peace between two peoples when one of those peoples has it in their nation’s charter to destroy the other. We now have peace if one of these three elements are met. I already feel smarter than Barack Obama and John Kerry. J. Buss South Prairie
Supporting Roach for another term in Senate I would like to voice my support for the re-election of Sen. Pam Roach. Although her political adversaries are trying to band together as some type of bipartisan team, don’t be fooled by who they represent (themselves!) as they endeavor to secure their personal legacies versus ensuring that all their
constituents are represented. Sen. Roach has acquired a great deal of experience dealing with local, county and state legislative issues. She is backed by the majority in her party and many organized groups. She has a very long history of supporting open and transparent government as well Growth Management issues as they relate to protecting our schools, preserving and protecting our rural lands. She lives a humble existence and represents the family values that I desire to see in my representative. I understand that some have painted Sen. Roach as a polarizing figure in politics, but generally those who primarily serve their constituents versus making deals with corporations and developers face a more public critique. I know that I can email or pick up the phone and Sen. Roach or her office will get back to me in a timely manner. I know that Sen. Roach makes the efforts to meet her constituents and ask their concerns and then takes those back to Olympia. I do not see the knowledge, experience or equal commitment to serve all the people versus serving the party in any of her opponents. Therefore, as a lifelong area resident, I support the re-election of Pam Roach for senator. Vicki Harp Enumclaw
It’s not quite like ancient Rome Well, friends, we’re kicking-off another football season with all the glorious hoopla that characterized the games of ancient Rome, though our games aren’t quite as brutal. Not quite. And even though some fans might hesitate to admit it, the violence is, in part, the very thing that turns many spectators on – especially male spectators. Otherwise, why the laughter and the humorous groans when a receiver gets clobbered and knocked half-unconscious? Yet, violent as it is, football is still America’s most popular sport, long ago replacing baseball as our favorite pastime. Of course, we celebrate all our sports, but somehow football seems a bit more “heroic.” And make no mistake, heroes are born on the gridiron and under the Friday-night lights. All parents want the best for their little boy and at times it seems like all the accolades are laid at the feet of football stars. I mean, doesn’t the varsity quarterback always date the cheerleading queen? So, it starts early in life. Kids 8 and 9 years old tackle one another in little league ball, gearing up for middle
Wally’s World Wally DuChateau Columnist
school and, finally, combat on the high school line of scrimmage. Though players get injured from time to time, hopefully it’s nothing too serious. But life is hard and people get hurt, so football simply prepares kids for the real world. Furthermore, if a fellow can survive the hard knocks of high school ball and show a certain athletic skill, he’ll be in line for a college scholarship and the opportunity to really demonstrate his ability to talent scouts and a national audience. Talk about a hero! Perhaps your son even harbors dreams of actually playing with the pros, thereby making big bucks doing precisely what he wants to do. Who could ask for anything more?
They’ve tried to make the game safer. Some rules have been changed to curb the most devastating tackles and strengthen concussion detection, but all the risk can’t be removed without decimating the game itself. Of course, as with any sport, money is paramount and the bottom line ultimately determines the game’s general rules and policies. Currently, the NFL has suggested doing away with two preseason games, adding two more wild-card teams and playing extra playoff games because public interest is especially high during the playoffs, which means the owners could make a few extra nickels. After all, they have to recoup the $765 million dollars they agreed to pay ex-players who are permanently crippled by physical injuries and concussions. I recall the day they pushed ex-Husky linebacker Curtis Williams onto the U-Dub football field. He’d been severely hurt in a game, paralyzed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair. The entire stadium rose and gave him a standing ovation. Then, a year later, he died.

Thankfully, effort can bring us transformation
Reunion set for EHS grads of 50 years ago or more The Enumclaw High School reunion for all graduating classes of 50 years ago or more is slated for 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, in the EHS commons. This year, the class of 1964 will be honors, along with the oldest grad. Staff and
are outward. Transformations are inward. God speaks the word + Nature obeys = Miracle. God speaks the word + We obey = Transformation. (Please don’t be trite about it, obedience here means choosing to learn and follow his way more accurately over time with his help; not a stunted reference to merely responding as good pets do. Note also: Miracles can be more easily dismissed by onlookers than transformations can be). We recognize that ungodliness only has power when we cooperate with it. Entertain the idea of shoplifting and it affects your mental state; act on it and it impacts others; repeat it and its power gradually changes you into a different person. But omit the thoughts,
action, repetition and it remains powerless. Simple. And it’s the same with godliness: focus your thoughts, actions and habits upon it and it becomes powerful; small changes will snowball into positive transformation in your life! But omit these and your life remains unplugged. We didn’t have to get our act together to come to Jesus, thankfully, but his transformation waits upon our cooperation and persistent effort. Otherwise, we’ll continue in compromise and frustration, seeing God’s promises through a thick and dirty window, rather than experiencing them; and onlookers will continue to view Christianity – through us – as a myth with no power. Your call.

NOTICE Washington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (receipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d b u y e r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quantity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the delivery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a c o r d by v i s u a l i z i n g a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet. Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension. In Memorium: The Chamber of Commerce would like to extend a special acknowledgement to our long-time member, The Park Center Hotel, who recently lost their Manager, John Caldwell. John’s passing on June 28, 2014 was a great loss to the Enumclaw community. John was a terrific person who seemed very dedicated to his job, the town, his family, the Chamber of Commerce and was a true lover of life. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his family and colleagues during this difficult time.

3,254 votes and 42 percent to Roach’s 3,064 votes and 40 percent. Roach’s strength was in Pierce County where she polled 6,013 votes and 41 percent to Dahlquist’s 5,535 votes and 38 percent. Where Messner’s votes end up may determine the next senator in the 31st District. Dahlquist and Rep. Chris Hurst, D-Greenwater, have maintained Messner was a “fake” Democrat who ran only to siphon votes away from Dahlquist, thus helping Roach.
