Little chief leaves lasting impression By Eric Mandel Reporter
Howard “Howie” Koch’s head settled on a comfortable shoulder as each of his fellow new police chiefs were ceremonially pinned with golden badges. He was practically sleeping on the job. Though, it was also hard to blame him — lunch hadn’t yet been served and it had already been an eventful day. Koch and 33 other King County youngsters were anointed Chief for the Day on Aug. 21, with emotional ceremonies and law enforcement related activities for hundreds of the little chiefs’ friends, families and officers from around the county. The event outfits children suf-
fering from chronic or terminal illnesses with mini, hand-tailored uniforms, a certificate, badge and, most importantly, a day of blissful distraction. Doctors diagnosed Koch with stage four neuroblastoma in Dec. 2013, at the age of 2. Koch recently finished his second round of experimental chemotherapy. The cancer currently sits in his eye sockets, cheek bones and skull, plus all of his joints. Once, and if, he goes into remission, doctors can look at a bone marrow transplant. Koch suffers from nausea and digestive issues, while the chemotherapy sometimes also causes bouts of depression. Koch, called the “Cancer Ninja,” is so used to doctors and medical lingo that when
someone says the word blood pressure, he knows to put out his arm for a reading. “It’s a shame he understands what it is,” said Mitchell Neary, who is engaged to Koch’s mother, Jenna Rossi. “A 3 year old shouldn’t know that.” The 34 little chiefs were the largest showing for the legislatureapproved program. The Black Diamond Police Department has reached out to a chronically ill child from the city two other times since 2010. “We didn’t know if (Koch) would make the event,” said Cmdr. Greg Goral with the Black Diamond Police Department. “(The cancer) came back pretty hard.” Koch’s day started at the Showare

makeover that will give year-long color without the yearly planting of annuals or maintenance of traditional perennial plants. If you can’t make it to one of the classes I teach on this topic, then here are some of the secrets to a successful designs for low maintenance, high color gardens in western Washington:
Divide the landscape into season gardens

Simply label the corner with the Japanese maple the fall garden, the east side of the house with rhodies and camellias the spring garden, and an area you can see from indoors your winter garden. Of course, your patio or deck is the summer garden area. Now concentrate on just one garden section each season by adding plants that look great in that season. Giving a name to different garden areas also helps with maintenance. Promise to weed, mulch and fine tune just one section or pocket garden at a time instead of being distracted by chores all over the garden. Yard work will not seem so overwhelming when you break a space into small chunks. Adding asters and mums around a beautiful maple

in the “autumn garden” is a pleasant task if you pay attention to the changing colors of the season as you weed, plant and mulch the fall corner garden.
Choose plants with great foliage
Flowers do not last as long as great-looking foliage. In western Washington we are blessed with the perfect climate for heucheras, and these spectacular foliage plants can be used to highlight fall foliage or add drama to spring bulbs. Heucheras can also be used in containers and they will look great even during the winter months. Choose rhododendrons with a splash of yellow on their leaves and seek out conifers with blue or bright gold needles to add yearlong interest to any landscape. We have a lot of dark green evergreen color in western Washington so trees and shrubs with gold, bright green or dark purple leaves will add some contrast. In my garden I use an evergreen lamium groundcover called Golden Anniversary as my signature plant that repeats in every garden area. It acts as the cohesive color or melody that keeps repeating with golden foliage amidst a symphony of blooming waves.
Add Heavenly Hellebores for Winter blooms
The new hellebores come in shades of pink, green, speckled and burgundy colors as well as the classic white. These evergreen, deer-, slug- and drought-resistant perennials love our cool, moist weather and do not need to be divided, fertilized or watered as much as other perennials plants. (In fact, you should never divide a hellebore – get new plants
from the seedlings that sprout around the base of happy mother plants.) You can grow hellebores in pots for winter blooms near the front entry as these plants will flower in the shade or partial sun. Once you have hellebores and heucheras to liven your winter garden you’ll be able to survive our gray days of winter.
Create a Hydrangea Room
Hydrangeas are another plant that love our climate and new varieties make these old-fashioned shrubs the new-fangled darlings of the low-maintenance gardener. Dwarf hydrangeas are easy to tuck into shaded spots for late summer and fall color and hydrangeas bloom best with no pruning – ever. The problem with hydrangeas is that they lose their leaves in the winter and that most varieties want to grow into 12 foot shrubs. In my garden I used hydrangeas as the walls for an outdoor room. Hidden behind a hedge of evergreen arborvitae you can’t see the leafless hydrangeas in the winter but step through the archway in the hedge and you enter an opening that is surrounded by blooming hydrangeas in the summer and fall. I’ve added hellebores at the base of the hydrangeas and a few heucheras for winter color. This makes a nice color surprise as you enter the area on a cold winter day. Hydrangeas, heucheras and hellebores – three great plants to add to your landscape now for more year round color. • • • For more gardening information, Marianne Binetti can be reached at her Web site, www.binettigarden.com. Wealthy working to alter gun laws
Our state’s super wealthy social changers are at it again. Two years after their money helped make charter schools possible, the Ballmers, the Gateses and the Nick Hanauers are using some of their loose millions to try to tighten gun laws in Washington. They’ve made six- and seven-digit contributions to the campaign for Initiative 594, the measure on the November ballot which would expand the state’s background check law to cover most gun sales conducted at gun shows and online. Their checks went to the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility whose strategists will, sometime after Labor Day, start spending the Jerry Cornfield dough on television Columnist commercials claiming wider use of background checks will bolster public safety without infringing on anyone’s Second Amendment rights. The alliance can afford to wait because it is already getting a boost from a million-dollar ad campaign paid for by its nonprofit alter ego, the Center for Gun Responsibility. Since Aug. 8, the center has been running dozens of 30-second commercials as part of an “education” campaign dubbed “Background Checks Make A Difference.” The effort is set to end Sept. 5. The ads stress the value of background checks for enhancing public safety but never mention the ballot measure that its political self is promoting. What’s nice about this campaign finance nuance is it also allows the Center for Gun Responsibility to keep secret the source of its money. Center spokeswoman Molly Boyajian noted in an email that the nonprofit has received “gifts from local individuals, partner organizations, foundations, and our national partners.” One of those partners is Everytown for Gun Safety, founded by Michael Bloomberg, the super rich ex-mayor of New York. He’s pledged to spend boatloads of money in every corner of the country to help enact tougher gun control laws and elect pro-gun control lawmakers. I-594 fits his investment profile perfectly. While billionaires soak up attention for their prodigious checks, where is the National Rifle Association in all of this? The NRA did contribute $25,000 to its PAC in July then spent most of it on staff, probably to have them survey the landscape. They couldn’t have liked what they discovered. An Elway Poll in July found 70 percent of voters – many of them in the vote-rich Pugetopolis – “inclined” to back Initiative 594. Three months earlier, in April, an Elway Poll found the level of support at 72 percent. NRA leaders must decide whether it is worth trying to convince voters in one state in the far corner of the country to defeat an initiative, or focus on keeping members of Congress from changing the background check law for the nation. The next few days will be very telling.

Letters City leaders too willing to spend citizen money Our city officials seem to have problems agreeing on anything except spending money. Now they have hired a survey company to ask its citizens for their opinions on the best way to pay for repairs to our roads. The survey, (cityofenumclaw.net) tells of numerous options our officials can impose at our expense which is quite frightening. Question five asks to rate which is more important, police, parks, seniors and youth centers, art, expo center, roads, etc. Everything on that list is important to the overall well being of our community and at this point I am not willing to let these few officials decide for me. Face it, their track record does not inspire confidence. These are the same people that hired a public relations company to
come up with an idea to draw others to our city. Equestrian City Of The West was expensive and a bust. I’m sure it would have been more successful to have a contest and let our children come up with workable ideas instead of paying so much for nothing. Instead of thinking of our road repairs, huge expensive ideas have come up about a new Welcome Center. Now they suggest money for roads come from additions to sales taxes or auto dealership taxes and even property taxes. We already have a $20 charge added to our vehicle tabs but now that is not enough. I don’t even want to think of the litigation expenses our city officials have incurred because they do not work or play well with others. There is a recession-proof way to solve many of these problems and We The People voted. But our city officials think they know better than the voter. Eleven of the 13 precincts in Enumclaw district voted to legalize recreational marijuana. It would
be ignorant to assume that all of these people want to use but do see the wisdom in taxing growth and sales bringing much-needed revenues to our area without tapping its already burdened citizens even more. As it stands now with the moratorium the only ones benefiting are the drug dealers which makes me ask the question, who are our city officials trying to please? Certainly not the voter.
It’s simple: pull over, let emergency vehicles pass In my seven years of living in this area, I have seen more drivers ignore emergency vehicles than I saw in the previous 60 years of my life. It is not a difficult concept. When your rear view mirror shows flashing lights, pull over! Someday it could be your parent or your child whose life is on the line. Once again, pull over! Marcie Neuman Buckley
Why such a polarized process? “While American politics has always been a shrill, partisan, and ugly business going back to the Founding Fathers, we have rarely been so polarized and so unable to execute even the basic functions of the government, much less tackle the most difficult and divisive problems facing the country.” These are the words of Robert M. Gates, former secretary of defense under George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Gates goes on to give six reasons for this polarization of Congress that he saw under both presidents in his book, “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War.” The first reason Gates gives for the polarization is the constant “take-noprisoners” attitude that has driven the moderates in both parties out of Congress. According to Gates, the very definition of moderation has transformed into something nearer to a person “lacking principles” and offering compromise tantamount to “selling out.” These changes in attitude have evolved over decades. The second reason given for these changes is gerrymandering, the creation of congressional districts by state partisans, in such a way that only 50 to 60 seats of the 435 in the House of Representatives are not “safe” for either party. The last redistricting occurred after the 2010 census. I remember how the voting districts were determined by horse-trading between Democrats and Republicans.
In Focus Rich Elfers Columnist
The results were that the incumbents were given virtually guaranteed seats in their districts, making me wonder why I should bother to vote for any candidate for the House. During the Cold War that lasted from 1945 to the fall of the USSR in 1991, there was a need for the two political parties to cooperate. When the Soviet Union collapsed, there was no longer the pressure to work together for the common good. This is Gates’ third reason for the current dysfunction. It is apparent that being the only superpower has not been good for this nation. As a fourth reason, Gates bemoans the loss of power by committee chairs who could wheel and deal to come to agreement and to enforce their decisions. This changed when chairs were appointed solely by seniority. The need to constantly raise campaign money changed the dynamics and the priority of elected officials in Congress. This is Gates’ fifth reason. The imposition of the threeday Congressional workweek from Tuesday to Thursday contributed to the weakening of bipartisanship. It
used to be that members of Congress would room together, eat and play cards together, building rapport and trust with each other in the process. Gates attributes his sixth cause to the changing media. There used to be only three major networks and a handful of newspapers that filtered out the negatives. Now there are hundreds of cable networks, blogs and the infamous 24-hour news cycle that both dilutes and ignores the journalists who write. Too much competition and information can be as bad as too little. Now, the more acidic the news coverage, the more popular and profitable networks become, only increasing the rift between views. In short, the way to stop this dysfunction is for elected officials to put the good of the nation above loyalty to their party. Gates’ solution is for both the president and Congress to start being civil and to start listening. Both parties should quit distorting the facts and demonizing those who differ. Unfortunately, I don’t see the return to civility happening any time soon. Perhaps the only way to bring back moderation in our government is for the United States to see the rise of another superpower that will force us to quit tearing ourselves apart and start working together again. Sadly, if another superpower or powers arise, this will only put our nation at risk of another world war. There is no perfect solution for our partisan dysfunction.

bank accounts, careers and future. Typically you end up estranged from the people who love you, in and out of jail and eventually dead because the intent of the devil was never anything less. Then, after all of that the enemy, works on your mind. He heaps upon you guilt, shame and condemnation; too much for any person to carry. He tells you that you have no hope, that no one loves you and that God is not real. The devil is a liar. Not only is God real but he loves and cares for you! Our God is a restorer. He
that never again will our failures and sins be counted against us. In this God defeats every accusation and lie the devil can ever have against us. When lies are defeated, guilt and shame are also defeated. This grace that God gives us empowers us to overcome our battles and live abundant, joyful lives! God will walk with you every day of your life. Our community is uniting to fight against this enemy, who up until now seemed to have the upper hand. A new Facebook group has been formed called The Family’s Battle. This group is bringing hope to families of addiction and uniting our community against the addiction problem we face. If you’ve been looking for help, hope and support I strongly encourage you to join this group on Facebook. Also you are invited to come to their first meeting in Enumclaw at 7

God brings life to dry bones makes the crooked way straight again. Without God we are powerless. We are powerless to change, powerless to fix our lives and powerless to fix our kids. It’s OK to realize you are powerless. That is often the very thing that prompts us to cry out for help from the one who holds all power in his hand. We need God and he will never turn his back on you. When we turn to God we find that he never left us and that he loves us. Simply by believing on him we receive forgiveness for all of our sins and failures. Further than forgiveness the word of God says that we are literally separated from our sin. That means

Today I want to tell you that you are not alone and that there is hope. I see drug and alcohol addiction as a vice of the devil he uses to rob, kill and destroy. They are subtle in their deception masquerading as fun, excitement or YOLO (You Only Live Once), while all the while stealing hours, days and years of your life. These addictions thieve away your joy, peace, beauty, confidence, innocence, moral judgment and integrity without much of a fight. Today I want to talk about the massively huge drug problem we have on the Plateau. In particular I want to bring attention to the meth and heroin epidemic that is killing our sons and daughters and tearing apart families as they suffer in silent shame. As a pastor I don’t claim to be an expert on addiction but I know quite a bit about God’s love, truth and power. I hate heroin. I was a firefighter in Seattle for more than 10 years and performed CPR in vain on a couple dozen young men and women who overdosed on this destructive, lying, killer. I lost my cousin to it. He died when he relapsed after nearly nine months of sobriety. I have friends here in Enumclaw who’s sons and daughters have recently overdosed on heroin and died. And recently I have been introduced to family after family who are strug-

The power was unreal—and 208.23 mph was a new personal best!” For Sunday eliminations the team increased the tune up for more power. Things didn’t go as well as planned and Meeks wound up “smoking” the rear tire; the rider in the other lane pulled away for the win. EHS ready to do battle in new-look league By Dennis Box Editor
The Enumclaw Hornets open the 2014 season loaded with talent and ready to do battle in a newly-aligned South Puget Sound League 3A. The Hornets open the season with the Battle of the Bridge against White River Sept. 5 at Enumclaw. Coach Mark Gunderson said he “loves the new league. It should be a really fun year.” This season, the Sumner Spartans return to the 3A coached by Enumclaw High graduate and football star Keith Ross. Ross played for Gunderson’s dad when he suited up for the Hornets. Auburn and Auburn Riverside are

Gunderson said the base offense for the Hornets is a Power-I and, defensively, it’s a 5-2 formation. The offensive coordinator is Jason Patterson and the defensive coordinator is Gunderson. The coach is said five starters are returning on offense and defense. Senior Eli Dennison, a second team allleague performer, is back on the offensive and defensive line. Senior wide receiver Trey Rodarte is expected to add depth on patterns and junior Tarik Hagan is a second team all-

ENUMCLAW FROM 11 league defensive back and wide receiver. Gunderson said linebacker and tailback Mason Harp is one of the hardest workers on the team. The coach said middle linebacker Jarrett Azevedo is a very physical and dynamic player and Jared Sprague, offensive line, is “disciplined and tough.” Gunderson, who is in his third season on the sidelines for the Hornets, has a number of rising stars expected to be impact players. Those include Sam Schuler, middle linebacker, and Tyler Harris, running back, who Gunderson said may be one of the best player in the league. Scotty Garvin at quarterback should have a standout year along with running back Connor Pierce who are both excellent athletes. “We have a great group of kids that have bought into our brotherhood,” Gunderson said.
Trey Rodarte (11) and his Enumclaw High teammates will kick off the season Friday night against cross-river rival White River. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Enumclaw Expo Center Rodarte is among a handful of starters who return for the Hornets. File photo

likely never change under the regime of head coach Joe Sprouse: the White River Hornets will again boast a run-first, smashmouth style of football. As the team counts down the days to the nonleague
season opener at neighboring Enumclaw High, Sprouse and his staff keep pounding the fundamentals that, he hopes, will continue a recent run of success. Last year’s team made the state playoffs and advanced to the Elite Eight; the 2011 squad won a league championship. Between those two was a club that was just a crucial play or two away from a playoff appearance, despite suffering critical injuries. Last season ended
with a loss to top-ranked Tumwater, a defeat that spurred quite a shift in the way Hornet personnel is used. The Hornets hung with the Thunderbirds for the opening quarters, but were outperformed in the second half, particularly in the fourth period. Sprouse believes Tumwater’s depth and limited number of twoway players contributed to the victory. So, fans shouldn’t expect to see many Hornets playing on both sides of the ball this year. The shift in attitude has paid unexpected dividends, Sprouse said, as some talented players have joined the program due to greater playing opportuni-

ties. Just a couple of players are presently slated for twoway duty and one of those is Dustin France, a threeseason standout who is, in his coach’s eyes, perhaps the school’s best athlete. France has lined up as a receiver the past couple of seasons but will make the adjustment to quarterback. Considering his physical gifts, he may carry the ball more than other Hornets QBs of recent vintage. France shapes up to be the busiest player in the program. He’ll also line up in the defensive backfield, handle the team’s placekicking chores and will most likely be the punter,

too. The Hornet offense took a huge hit with the graduation of running back, and league MVP, Keenan Fagan, but Sprouse is plenty excited about his replacement, Tristan Knaus. Sprouse said the senior would have started for most league teams last season. “He’s going to be our workhorse,” Sprouse said of the 5-foot-7, 220-pound backfield bulldozer. When France puts the ball in the air, he’ll likely be aiming at senior Hunter Hendricks, the fastest Hornet on the roster, or one of the football newcomers, junior Marcus Henke. The offensive line will be anchored by senior Siansi Tangi, who will use his 6-4, 280-pound frame to open the way for the White River running game. When the Hornets find themselves in close contests, Sprouse said, “it’ll be a steady diet of Tangi and Knaus in the fourth quarter.” A linebacker during his playing days, Sprouse hopes to field a defense that sets the tone for the program. An integral part of the defense should be senior linebacker Cyruss Stenson, who was a first-team, allleague selection a season ago. An interesting addition is another of the Hornets’ first-year players, Polo Reyes. Before setting foot in the weight room, Sprouse said, the 6-footer was the Hornets’ strongest player. He’ll set up at nose tackle.

SUPERINTEND. MSG. GOING OLD SCHOOL NEW GMS LEADERS OKTOBERFEST COMMUNITY ACTIVI. WRCAP SPORTS POWER OF TEAM PLAYGROUND
MESSAGE FROM JANEL As I spent time with staff at new teacher training and the events associated with welcoming our students to the 2014-15 school year, I had the chance to reflect on how blessed my life and the lives of our White River teachers are because We “get to” be educators; to perhaps become a hero to some student each day. William Graves, the editor of National Geographic, highlights the value of teaching and teachers by recalling the story of the internationally acclaimed violinist, Jascha Heifetz, who left performing to become a professor at UCLA. When asked why he gave up performing to become a teacher, Heifetz said that he remembered his Russian violin teacher who constantly told him that if he worked hard enough, someday he would become good enough to teach! This profession gives us the wonderful opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families. Teaching is a difficult and complex job. When the grade level or course specific standards are linked to a caring relationship with a staff member test scores soar – students learn. In this issue we’ve highlighted the story of one teacher team, the White River High School Biology team. They’ve taken accountability for learning to heart and their value as educators-role models to our kids is measured far beyond a test score. They’re creating successful learners. Enjoy reading the story of this team. We’re also spotlighting the positive changes in our Community Activities Program.
GOING OLD SCHOOL
September 12 at Sheets Field Kickoff 7:00 p.m. White River vs. Lindbergh We’ll be going “old school” with our annual non-league football game played on the grass at Sheets Field. Football team march to the stadium starts at 5:30 p.m. along Main Street. See you at the game!
NEW LEADERSHIP AT GLACIER MIDDLE SCHOOL
If you believe it is important to help children and young men and women acquire the knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential to productive and satisfying lives, then consider being a teacher. If you burst with passion for your subject and want to share that passion with others, then consider being a teacher. If you truly enjoy kids, if you are able to see the best in each of them, if you are willing to persist when confronted by their recalcitrance or indifference, then consider being a teacher. If you believe that an educated citizenry is critical to the well being of the nation, then consider being a teacher. If you feel joy in seeing students learn to believe in themselves because you helped them achieve what they felt was beyond their grasp, then consider being a teacher.
Glacier Middle School welcomes new administrative team! Principal - Robin Cerato Gibbs, center Assistant Principal - LeeAnn Alfano Tier 2 & 3 Education Director - Adam Uhler
If you recognize that giving of yourself to others and developing others can be one of the most significant and fulfilling ways in which to live your life, then consider being a teacher. Parents thank you for sending us what you value most – your children. We’re honored and ready!

THE POWER OF THE TEAM
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
White River Community Activities Program strives to provide quality recreation opportunities outside of the classroom. Our program spans from youth sports leagues and camps, to Kids Klub before and after school care, to active summer programming, dance and the arts. Our main goal is to build healthy families and provide ways for children to develop new skills and interests that open the door to lifelong healthy habits. The youth sports program is a prime example of this, with many different sporting options. Our leagues are designed to provide a positive place to play, while building skills and interests in healthy activities. We depend largely on dedicated volunteers to make our programs successful, and are very grateful for those who donate their time. At WRCAP we are always looking for new ways to engage youth. We have had some great success in expanding dance and drama programs in the recent years. If you have an idea for new programs or see a need for a program in our community, we would welcome your input.
Did you know?
WRCAP offers a safe and affordable before and after school care option for children, serving all four of our elementary schools. Our Kids Klub program starts at 6 a.m. and is available until 6:30 p.m. to meet the needs of working families. This includes late start and early release days. There are five options for enrollment to provide families with the flexibility they need. At Kids Klub, children are cared for by kind and compassionate staff who provide engaging recreational activities and experiences, such as group games, art projects, homework help and other structured activities. Kids Klub provides light healthy snacks in the safe environment of the school campus.
In the White River School District, teachers and administrators collaborating together in highly effective teams has been an important practice to ensure all students are continually supported in learning at high levels. One of the hallmarks of an effective PLC is data that supports students’ demonstration of proficiency or mastery on all of the courses’ essential standards. The science team at White River High School continues to refine their curriculum design, instructional strategies, as well as formative and common assessments, to target those important standards and provide meaningful feedback for their students. The Physical Science and Biology teams work together to ensure that all students taking the Biology End of Course (EOC) Exam have had multiple opportunities to interact with the content before taking this assessment, which will be required for a high school diploma beginning with the Class of 2015. One of the greatest celebrations of this team is the student achievement data from the Science HSPE and Biology EOC. Over the past five years, scores have increased from only 28.2% of students meeting standard on the exam in 20082009 to over 80% for the 2013-3014 school year. The relentless focus of this team in supporting each and every student skill by skill and standard by standard has played an integral role in these continued improvements. We are proud of the work of this team!

White River School District has completed construction of an accessible playground that is also developmentally appropriate for preschool aged children. The playground is located at Mountain Meadow Elementary School and will serve students enrolled in the District’s Developmental Preschool Program. The playground was funded with the support of the Mountain Meadow PTA, the White River Education Foundation, HELAC Corporation, and the White River School District. The playground provides an outdoor learning environment accessible to all preschool age children regardless of disability where they can practice social, motor, and communication skills. Like all the District outdoor equipment, the playground is available to the community outside school hours and on weekends. 1035892
