City administrator undergoes brain surgery Cort out of intensive care, on road to recovery, according to wife By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter
There are two things Oak Harbor City Administrator Larry Cort’s friends, colleagues and admirers need to know. First, he made it through brain surgery Wednesday with flying colors. Second, his trademark mop of wild hair is intact. His wife, Lisbeth Cort, sounded overjoyed in a phone call from Swedish Medical Center in Seattle Thursday. She said he was already
out of intensive care and was doing great. “Less than 24 hours after surgery, he’s talking and doing everything” she said. “It’s fabulous.” “There’s no reason to believe he won’t make a full recovery” she said. She said surgeons successfully removed a mass from his brain and it’s being tested to figure out what it is. The couple knew something was wrong when Larry Cort’s speech had become garbled, his wife explained. They were worried he may have had a small stroke and went to

Whidbey General Hospital on Sunday. He had a brief seizure at the hospital and jerked so hard he broke his shoulder, Lisbeth Cort said. Doctors found a mass in his brain. Larry Cort was transferred to Swedish Medical for surgery, which only required shaving “a tiny little spot on the back of his head” Lisbeth Cort said. “He’s still got his wild hair” she said. Next, he will have to have surgery to repair SEE CORT, A10

Island Transit’s interim director begins his six-month stint no later than Dec. 15. The transit board approved a contract, in a 4-1 vote, to hire Kenneth Graska as the temporary chief during a meeting Friday marked by a strange little game of musical chairs. Both Oak Harbor Councilman Joel Servatius and Mayor Scott Dudley showed up to represent the city on the board, causing some confusion and tension. “I don’t know why you chose to make a spectacle of it,” Servatius said to the mayor before agreeing to bow out. “I’m not the one who is,” Dudley replied.
of baskets with all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, including turkey, dressing and potatoes. “I refer to this as our fat, dumb and happy time,” said Jean Wieman, executive director of the Help House, “because everybody remembers us.”
An unauthorized contract for a swim coach and terms of that deal raised concerns this week for the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District’s board of commissioners. A contract was already signed by Executive Director Gino Wolfe and the coach candidate, but the commissioners last year adopted rules stating the executive director may only make recommendations for hiring or firing a district employee. Hiring recommendations must approved or rejected by the board before they are official. One swim team parent, who works in human resources, offered the commissioners

runners who don’t get into the Boston Marathon. This year’s marathon had 3,115 registered participants, former race director Tamra Sipes reported earlier this year. While it was a big increase from the previous year, Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley was upset because she had cut registration fees in a promotion after he offered her a bonus for increased participation. As a result, the city lost money on the event while Sipes earned a bonus, Dudley said. Sipes, however, said the city administration was aware of the promotion and she never heard from Dudley about his concerns. She had support from City Council members who felt she’s been doing an excellent job. Nonetheless, Dudley opened up the contract for proposals and chose the Elks Lodge to coordinate the event. In a politically charged meeting last week, members of the city’s lodging tax committee refused to allow Riker to give a second presentation for lodging-tax dollars, which would have been used to market the event. Tuesday night, the council members thanked Riker for her report and applauded.

upbeat assessment of her work organizing the cityowned event to a very receptive City Council Tuesday night. The Elks Lodge won the contract to run the marathon earlier this year with member Riker serving as the race director. The council had asked her to give periodic updates on the event. Riker said she’s having luck lining up sponsors, including a physical therapy business, Walmart and two hotels. The Best Western and Candlewood Suites will be the “host hotels” and block off rooms so there’s enough space for all of the runners. Best Western donateduse of its ballroom for the marathon’s expo. The Lions Club, she said, is handling the beer garden. Riker said she’s been attending expos around the region to scout out vendors and advertise to runners. “I got to kind of feel those guys out and let them know about our race,” she said, “and let them know about Whidbey Island.” Registration has been open for a month, she said, and 111 people have signed up. In addition, she said she was contacted by a Colorado running club that may send

Turkey to abound at community dinners Lions Club trees By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter
Two hundred turkeys and 100 hams are being prepared for one massive community feast in Oak Harbor on Thanksgiving Day. It’s all part of the 13th North Whidbey Community Harvest, which is bracing to feed about 3,000 people from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge. Intended to keep community members from spending the holiday alone, the event has evolved into a festive community gathering put on by hundreds of volunteers. The meal is free to the public and funded through donations from private citizens to business owners. Island Thrift is the event’s biggest sponsor. “It’s a group effort,” said Scott Fraser, owner of Frasers Gourmet Hideway, a part of the organizing group since the event’s outset. In Central Whidbey, another volunteer group is hosting a free community meal at the Coupeville Recreation Hall. The 16th Coupeville Community Potluck is from noon until about 2:30 p.m.

Volunteers help serve food at last year’s annual community Thanksgiving feast in Oak Harbor. Thanksgiving Day. Hundreds of people are expected there. Organizers are preparing the staples as the main course, including turkey and ham. Attendees may bring a side dish if they wish. In Oak Harbor, North Whidbey Community Harvest originated from an idea by former restaurant
owner Keith Bartlett, who wanted the community to come together for a meal served on linen table cloths with formal dining and silverware. Bartlett died of a heart attack while preparing the holiday meal during the third year of the event. The event continues to be a tribute to its founder.
The BBQ Joint and Seabolt’s Smokehouse are teaming up to smoke 80 turkeys and 100 hams with the remaining 120 turkeys being deep-fried onsite at the Elk’s Lodge. “We have 12 deep fryers going constantly starting at 9 in the morning,” said Fraser, who is running the kitchen with his staff, focusing on a mountain of side dishes such as potatoes, stuffing, vegetables and salads. Volunteers with the North Whidbey Community Harvest also are delivering meals to those unable to attend. Inquiries for deliveries should be made by calling 360-279-1722. Donations to defray event costs may be made on the day of the event at the Elks Lodge or dropped off at Frasers Gourmet Hideaway at 191 SE Fidalgo Ave., or Whidbey Residential Rentals at 285 NE Midway Blvd. Donations also may be mailed in care of the event’s president to: North Whidbey Community Harvest, care of Skip Pohtilla, 1090 SE Hathaway St., Oak Harbor, WA, 98277.

The nobles and Nordmanns, along with Douglas and grand firs, will be available for sale noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, and then 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Dec. 23, or until sold out. The Lions are selling the trees in the park next to the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce of fice along State Highway 20. The trees range in height from 4 to 9 feet. The Lions recommend shopping early to get an 8- or 9-footer. Proceeds from the Lions tree sale go toward dif ferent programs within the community that the club supports, among them Relay for Life, Whidbey General Hospital Foundation and North Whidbey Help House. The village baker By KATE DANIEL South Whidbey Record
By 2 a.m., when the majority of Whidbey Island residents remain nestled snugly in their beds, Langley baker Kelly Baugh is already hard at work. The Clinton resident and single mother of five said she had always dreamt of a place in which she could fulfill the age-old profession of village baker. “I’m awake, alone, and the rest of the world is just turning over for the first time,” she said with a smile, adding that she finds a great sense of tranquility in baking. At 11 years old, Baugh began her career in the food industry making pizza dough at an Italian restaurant. “I was like a Ryan’s House
child,” she said. Throughout the years, Baugh enrolled in college five times, earning a degree in early child development and child psychology and, in 2001, she received her Associate of Arts degree in bakery and pastry arts from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. She worked as a baker and manager for Great Harvest Bread Company and later baked for Lucky Eagle Casino in Rochester, Wash. During a typical day at her establishment, Sundance Bakery, Baugh does everything from threshing the grains to operating the cash register. Her eldest daughter and a handful of other employees assist with various aspects of the business.
Baugh moved to Whidbey with her five children, son-inlaw and two grandchildren and rented a space on Second Street and DeBruyn Avenue, formerly a cafe, nearly two years ago. A sense of community, she said, is something she always yearned for, something she found in Langley. As a single mom, the Village by the Sea afforded her peace of mind that urban life lacked. “For 10 years I searched for a place where I could be the village baker, and I found Langley and fell in love,” she said. “Imagine every dream you’ve ever had happening.” Baugh never required a bank loan, she said, and instead acquired a loan from Whidbey Island Local Lending and received dona-

In order to furnish the bakery’s brick oven, she ran a credible campaign, raising enough money to build the wood-fire oven — a unique mechanism made largely from recycled materials — which she uses to make hundreds of baked goods per day. Sundance Bakery currently collaborates with Whidbey farmers such as Ebey Road Farm, Grege Lange, Sherman Farms, Morningstar Honey Farm, Deep Harvest and Jones’ Road Blueberries. “We’re more than just a bakery because we grow the grains with the farmers here on the island,” she said. “Any time you buy anything from this place, you’re actually helping local farmers.” Recently, she also began working with the Salish Sea Trading Cooperative, which supplies flour from Nash’s Organic Grains in Sequim via the Port of Langley. She also
works with the Pacific Rim Institute and was advised by Dr. Stephen Jones of Washington State University Island County Extension as to which grains grow best in the Puget Sound area and which provide the greatest yields. Perhaps her most unusual grain is barley seed she obtained from a historian. The seed, dating back to 700 A.D., was found in an Egyptian pyramid and is now grown at the Pacific Rim Institute. Each day, the bakery produces six different breads, four varieties of muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies and pies. Soon, she said, they will be baking eclairs. “They’re dangerous, kind of like Pandora’s Box,” she said with a chuckle, adding that eventually, she hopes to hire more employees with experience in pastries in order to expand the menu. The most rewarding aspect, Baugh said, is hearing the exclamations of satis-

faction from customers. “When people say, ‘I haven’t had bread this good since my grandma made it,’ that feels pretty good,” she said. Her personal favorite product, the Swedish rye, comes from a 150-year-old recipe. “When you’re dealing with traditional grains, you have to look at old recipes because of the ratio difference in the protein levels,” she said. Chantelle Freilinger a dishwasher who began working at Sundance about two months ago, said this is by far her most enjoyable and least stressful job. “The whole process of how she does everything is so unique,” Freilinger said. “There is a story behind everything.” The brick oven, which Baugh built over the summer, was made using materials from Island Recycling, former fire places and what was once a Seattle post office. She has moved her antique grinder mill across the country four times, finally finding it a permanent home at Sundance.

Oak Harbor schools honors nine teachers for work with students
By MICHELLE BEAHM Staff reporter
At Oak Harbor Elementary, a group of educators are helping students who are struggling the most. The guidance and resource teams work together to help those students succeed at their current level, and to go up and succeed in education levels with their class, said Susan Briddell, the school’s Title I teacher who works in the first level of intervention to identify and help students needing special education. “We’re working with the highest needs kids, kids who are struggling learners and helping to hopefully catch up to their grade level,” Briddell said. Jenny Rodgers, another teacher who was honored, said that their job is to “monitor our lowest-achieving students to make sure that they are meeting their personal
successes in all areas.” “A lot of times,” Rodgers said, “that can mean just that they’re having a good day and that they’re feeling confident about what they’re doing. That’s what we want for every kid.” At the Nov. 10 board meeting, Dorothy Day, principal of Oak Harbor Elementary, recognized those teachers for their work and dedication, and gave them each a certificate of recognition. Nine teachers were recognized at the meeting: Norma Sarbach, Rodgers, Nicole Cheshier, Briddell, Julie Stratton, Amy Murdock, Kim Fronckowiak, Sid MacIndoe and Charlene Milliron. “I chose to recognize them … because their work often goes unnoticed,” Day said, “and they are working with our most struggling learners in the entire school.” Sarbach “goes above and
SWIM COACH CONTINUED FROM A1 her observations. “This is engaging in a contract,” said Carolyn Pape. “This is beyond hire, engaging in a contract. “You have the legal problem, potentially engaging in something and whether you made a commitment to something that is beyond what you want to make a commitment to, and the second piece is if you want to retain this candidate as a viable coach. “A lot of finger pointing isn’t going to make this pool
look any better than it does,” said Pape. The board concluded the signed contract is not legally binding. After head coach Bill Patterson was terminated by the parks district, a selection committee was formed that included Wolfe. After narrowing the field of candidates to two, the committee recommended hiring Dick Taylor, current head coach of the South Ridge Aquatic Raider Gators in Indiana.
beyond everyday to make sure that our kids are learning,” Day said. Day said that Rodgers has the maturity level needed for the job, even as a first-year teacher. “She has jumped right in,” said Day. “We’ve had some very high-impacted kids, and she’s just gotten right in, helped those kids develop plans and has really started to learn what it takes to be part of our team.” Fronckowiak is one of the school’s special education resource paraeducators and works with kids of all grade levels at the elementary school. “She’s teaching fifth grade math down to first grade reading … working with kids individually,” Day said. “The things that she does allows the teachers to be able to work closer to the other kids.” Cheshier is the school psy-
chologist, shared with Oak Harbor High School, and was recognized for her “fabulous” consistency and leadership with the guidance team. Briddell is new to the guidance team, but has been a teacher in the district for 22 years. Day said Oak Harbor Elementary is “really lucky to have her” as part of the team. Stratton, Day said, is “phenomenal.” “She works individually with students, helping the kids who are in crisis, helping families who are in crisis,” said Day. Murdock is the speech and language pathologist on the team, working with students to teach them how to make sounds and understand and develop language skills. Finally, Day recognized Millirun, who “has spent a lot of time just working with our highly-impacted kindergarten, first and second grade
kids who have struggled making that transition to school.” “I recognize these fabulous ladies with all of their contributions to Oak Harbor Elementary,” said Day. Briddell said being recognized at the board meeting was an honor that “gives value to all the hard work that we do and all the extra time and meetings.” “It was nice to be recognized, and the guidance team does work really hard,” Briddel said, “As a teacher,
no one likes to see students struggling. We want all of our kids to be successful. “I love school; I want kids to love school. Helping them feel successful and giving them an opportunity to succeed, I think, is really critical.” “I want them to feel like they are just as capable of accomplishing their dreams as any other child out there,” said Rodgers. “I want all my kids to feel like they can do whatever they set their mind to.”
Commissioners Wendy Shingleton and Donna Sue Holly voiced concerns over a part of the contract stipulating that, after the contracted four years, the head coach receive a 3 percent salary increase for each additional year as head coach. “It just says, ‘Hey, you know what? This guy gets a raise,’” Shingleton said. “I’m not sure I blanketly agree with that.” Other concerns included the definition of “good cause”
to terminate a contract — whether there should be clear expectations and probationary periods — and lack of a definition as to what moving expenses were covered. Commissioner Steve Hoffmire noted that the proposed salary, moving expenses and other benefits exceeded the amount of money swim club brought in during 2014. “You will not get this coach, or a coach of this qual-
ity, unless you pay that type of money,” responded board President Allan McDougall. After rejecting the recommendation, the board asked the director to review the contract and make changes based on their suggestions. After that, the board will review the contract again. “I think we need to do our best effort to, one, fix the situation to the best of our ability to make all parties happy and then ensure that we put whatever in
place to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” said Shingleton. Board members said they hope that Wolfe will provide them with an amended contract within a couple days. A special meeting is tentatively set for Wednesday, Nov. 26, to revisit the matter. “The only item on the agenda will be whatever happens, and if there’s no adjustments on the contract, then there won’t be any meeting,” McDougall said.

OUR VIEWPOINT
Editorial staff is grateful for many things this holiday Thanksgiving is a time to take stock of our blessings. In the Whidbey News-Times newsroom, here’s some of the things our staff is grateful for: Editor & Publisher Keven R. Graves: I’m grateful my son Liam has a job and is figuring life out. I’m grateful that I live close to my parents and the rest of my family. I am thankful for those little Vitamin D capsules as we head into the long winter’s nights. Co-editor Jessie Stensland: I’m thankful that gays in the state have the right to carry guns and smoke pot at their own weddings. Co-editor Megan Hansen: I’m grateful for the health and happiness of my friends and family. Over the last year, I’ve watched several of the people in my life go through various medical situations, and I’m grateful they all appear to be pulling through and are on a downhill slope. Sports editor Jim Waller: I am thankful for our first grandchild. However, it does push me one more spot lower on the “relevancy pole” in our family.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Reporter Ron Newberry: I am thankful for the many great things I’ve discovered later in life, including my wife, this island and the friends we’ve found here. I’m also eternally grateful and proud of my two daughters, who are thriving in college at Washington State. Go Cougs!
Navy
Reporter Janis Reid: I’m thankful that that guy finally met their mother. I’m daily appreciative that Jack White still rocks, and that the whole Nickleback thing appears to be over. I’m especially thankful that John Boehner stopped crying in public.
Editor, It’s not a matter of “if” the Outlying Field Coupeville will close, it’s more a matter of “when” it’s going to close, and I believe each of us on the island needs to be making plans and preparations for that eventuality. It was the right thing to build in the early 1940s when it was first developed and it served its purpose admirably. With the advent of the EA-6Bs, the Prowler, and the current EA-18Gs, the Growlers, however, OLF has become obsolete, and there’s little that can be done to bring it in line with environmental requirements or the deep issues with its neighboring community, Coupeville. OLF has little room for required crash zones surrounding it as the com-
Reporter Michelle Beahm: I’m thankful that there will be 30 superhero movies in the next six years, including, finally, a female-led Marvel movie. I’m also thankful that I’m not the only one upset about the lack of a “Black Widow” movie. Seriously, Marvel. Get it together. Newsroom clerk Kelly Pantoleon: SiriusXM Radio. I have three months free because I got a new car. I have, like, five favorite stations that are really nice. One of them is called Watercolors. It’s very calming and jazzy. I recommend it to people who buy a new car that comes with three free months of SiriusXM Radio.

Editor, I was distressed to read the letter vilifying folks who didn’t vote — to be fair, many have been pummeled into a sense of hopelessness by the minions of the wealthy. Career goals falling into place for new hoop coach By JIM WALLER Sports editor
Maybe it was fate. Three days after John Weston accepted a teaching position with Oak Harbor High School, Wildcat head basketball coach Mike Washington resigned. Shortly after, Weston was named the new coach. “Getting a head coaching job and teaching job at the same school has been a dream of mine for a long time,” Weston said. “I feel very blessed the way the stars seemed to align,” Weston added. “I had such favor to have everything work out the way it did, to have my career goal come true so quickly in such a great community.” Weston, a 2001 Olympia High School graduate, received his teaching degree from Western Washington University last spring and sought an open position in Oak Harbor because of a fondness for the area. Oak Harbor High School boys basketball coach John Weston discusses a drill during the first practice Monday, Nov. 17. (Nesmith) is an Oak Harbor native and her parents and one sister still live in the area. “We have spent a lot of time in the community over the past six years, and we
really love it here,” Weston said. Weston is heading into his 13th season of coaching; this is his first as a high school head coach.

After graduating from Olympia, he coached the school’s AAU feeder team for sixth- through eighth-graders, then he was an assistant coach at Black Hills High School for one year. Weston moved to Bellingham in 2006 and worked as an assistant coach at Mount Baker High School for five years and at Bellingham High School for three. “Having a connection with this community since I met my wife, I have always followed what Oak Harbor boys basketball has done in Wesco,” Weston said. “I know Coach Washington did a good job of building the program and making it com-
petitive and successful.” Weston said he is going to take “the successful pieces from each program” he worked with as an assistant and mold them into his own coaching style. He expects to play an uptempo style with “hard-nose defense and an emphasis on quick ball movement that gives all five guys an opportunity to contribute.” Weston wants his teams to be known for their “gritty tenacity and disciplined teamwork.” A key to his coaching philosophy, Weston said, is to positively “impact my guys to become good men.” “Becoming successful off the court as adults, citizens,
fathers, husbands, etc. is far more important to me than their success on the court,” he said. One of his goals is to have his team get involved in community service and in the youth program. “I would hope that the young men in our program always display integrity and that they genuinely want to give back to their community, that they want to serve others without needing any sort of recognition or reciprocity,” he said. Weston and the Wildcats began practice last week and open the season at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, when Edmonds-Woodway visits.

Pyrate Punx is helping traveling bands By MICHELLE BEAHM Staff reporter
For bands just starting out, a common obstacle is finding places to perform and places to sleep while touring. Pyrate Punx is taking care of those needs. Pyrate Punx is an organization dedicated to supporting punk rock bands around the world, helping them to book places to perform, produce records and even housing out-of-town bands and giving them food. “For traveling musicians, especially starting bands, it’s really difficult,” said Chris Solis, a member of the punk rock band Alcojuana, of Oak Harbor. “They help get you out on the road and make sure you have a safe place to be when you get there.” The Whidbey Island chapter of Pyrate Punx was founded by Jason “Potbelly” Rodger. Having toured himself, Rodger said he knows how important it is to get that kind of support on the road. Not only does he sing for his band, Potbelly, he also plays guitar for another band, Porn Stars of Horror. “It gets expensive and it’s hard on the road,” he said. “It’s a great time, but you get tired. “With Pyrates, when there’s touring bands, we try to make them a home-cooked meal and give them a place to stay and just make them
feel welcome and (that) what they’re doing is worthwhile.” “The first tour that we did was strictly Pyrate Punxbased shows,” Solis said. “We played like two weeks, from here to Oregon to Idaho, all the way down the California coast and back up, and pretty much every show was based off of the Pyrate Punx. “So each place we went, we had a place to stay, someone to receive us when we got there.” Whidbey Island Pyrate Punx has helped the punk rock scene flourish. Rodger said the organization has even had visits by bands from Italy and China. Next summer, there’ll be bands visiting from England and Indonesia. “It gives the kids something to do besides smoking crack and playing Nintendo,” Rodger said. “I think it’s been a real positive thing overall for everybody, bringing all these shows in, all these touring bands.” The intent of Pyrate Punx is to be all-inclusive. Sara Martin, current captain of the Whidbey Island Pyrate Punx, grew up on a four-acre alfalfa farm in Michigan and she described herself back then as “an anomaly.” When she moved to Whidbey Island four years ago, she was introduced to the Pyrate Punx. “For the first time, everything clicked,” Martin said.

Justin Bone is the drummer for Gutter Gourmet, one of the bands to play at a recent Pyrate Punx party. She said that from the beginning, she was welcome, and she never felt the need to prove herself. “There’s an intense love and protection of a safe place to go and express what we artistically want to express,” Martin said. There’s a sort of punk rock hippocratic oath, she said. “We operate under the guide of ‘live and let live.’” “The general idea is anybody can be a part of it,”
PROSTHETICS & ORTHOTICS
Rodger said. “Anybody, literally. Punk rock in general is giving a safe place for every misfit kid to go. “It doesn’t matter what sexual orientation, what religious background, girl, boy, gay, straight, black, white. None of that matters to us. “With us, and punk rock in general, it will always be, you’re welcome. And we’re thankful for you being here, no matter how small.” Pyrate Punx is all-inclusive and non-judgmental, and they welcome every band and person coming through, Martin said. “There’s always a niche for people, and sometimes, it’s harder found than others, but it exists,” she said. “It’s there. It’s waiting to bring you into the fold.”

HELP CONTINUED FROM A1 Service members from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station help to assemble baskets, hand them out and even carry them to cars if the recipients need help. “We couldn’t do it without them,” Wieman said.
“We’ve had to before, and it’s not fun.” Registration for baskets was done during the first two weeks of November. Later requests are placed on a waiting list. “They’ll still get a basket, but it’ll be after the people who signed up during those two weeks,” Wieman said. “We’ve never not had baskets to give out to people that came in and asked for them.”
Help House isn’t the only group handing out baskets for holiday meals this Thanksgiving. At HomeConnection, Thanksgiving meal baskets are donated to two families who might need a little extra help. “The holidays are hard on some families,” said Amber Wolfkill, who is helping to organize this year’s donations. “Some families might be just behind.”

HomeConnection is a parentpartnership program for families who are homeschooling their children; it provides families with connections to the school district and helps develop learning plans. Wolfkill, a home school parent, started helping with Thanksgiving basket donations last year. “It’s just a way of helping other families in our community here that need a hand up,” she said.

Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley visited Larry Cort at the hospital Wednesday and said the couple appeared to be very optimistic. She said it appeared that just about every city employee signed get-well cards for him. “Larry and I both appreciate all the love and support,” she said. It might be awhile before he gets back, but Larry Cort is ever the city administrator. “He said he was glad that he and Doug (Merriman) got the budget gap filled before he left” Lisbeth Cort said.
