‘Mr. Christmas’ brings holiday cheer each year By JANIS REID Staff reporter

At the corner of Taylor and Crescent Harbor roads, you’ll find Mr. Christmas. You’ll know his house, and the house of his good friend Tom Carston, by the five-acre Christmas display that runs Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. “We pretty much have it covered,” said former Oak Harbor Public Works manager Jim Croft. “What used to take a couple of days now takes a couple of weeks.” Croft also plays Santa Clause at the Home Depot Christmas village each year. “I’m Mr. Christmas,” Croft said. “Christmas is my time.” The annual tradition started in 1978 when Croft put some lights up on his garage. His collection grew, and when Carston moved in next door in 1984, he joined in. “I’ve always had lights,” said Carston, who retired from the Navy as a lieutenant commandSEE CHEER, A2

Whidbey’s lone elk takes liking to lawn ornaments By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

It’s not a good time of year to be a yard ornament around Strawberry Point. Santa and his little elves might want to get out of the cold. Whidbey Island’s lone resident elk is known to knock around a few yard features. The elk is typically restless this time of year and might still be a little highstrung because he is experiencing the postrut period, according to Ralph Downes, a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife enforcement officer who lives on Whidbey. Downes has seen the elk in recent weeks and said he sports a large rack of antlers and appears very healthy despite being in his second year on an island where hunting for

CRESCENT HARBOR ELEMENTARY Dear Santa, My name is Leland Deutcher. I go to Crescent Harbor Elementary, in Washington. Some things I like to do are playing Lego’s, hunting, games and roses, too. Could you please get Lego’s for me? And could you get the poor people that have no food food for those people? Because I really don’t like it when people starve to death. I have a few questions to ask. How do your reindeers fly?

Options abound for tree recycling

CONTINUED FROM A1 er after 30 years of service. “I do it for the people, for the community, for the kids.” Croft, who served four years in the Navy, has lost count of how many outdoor Christmas decorations he owns, but Carston said he recently tallied his collection at 115 plastic figures, 16 spiral trees, 21 handmade trees, 21 miscellaneous items and 2,995 feet of cord — more than half a mile. Croft said he has at least that much. “You can pretty much double that, and it would be about right,” Carston said. The collection is a combination of items donated to them and ones they’ve purchased or fashioned themselves. They purchased a lot of the items left behind after the 2006 death of Fuzzy Rodgers, a legend in Oak Harbor known for his traffic-stopping display on Sixth Avenue. “We just buy stuff and put it up,” Croft said. “Every year we run out electricity,” Carston said. Croft said people often offer him money to help support the display, but he says he refuses. “I don’t care what it costs,” Croft said. “It’s not about that.” The two friends said that people are always welcome to come up their driveway and wander around to enjoy the lights. In recent weeks, a girls

basketball team stopped by and a bus from Regency on Whidbey Retirement and Assisted Living comes by every year. “Just turn between the two Christmas trees on Crescent Harbor Road,” Carston said. “They’re more than welcome.” What’s nice, they said, is when people drop Christmas cards and notes at their homes, thanking them for the extra holiday cheer. The lights turn on each evening at around 5 p.m. and shut off after 11 p.m. each night.

Not sure what to do with your Christmas tree after the holidays? Whidbey Island residents will have plenty of free and inexpensive options, ranging from home pickups to drop-offs at recycling centers. Island County is accepting Christmas trees free of charge at all of its Whidbey Island solid waste locations until the end of January. Those drop-off points are located at the following locations: 3151 Oak Harbor Road, Oak Harbor; 20018 State Highway 20, Coupeville; and, in Bayview, 5790 S. Kramer Road, Langley. “The trees have to be free of all ornamentation, including tinsel, and we do not accept flocked trees. They have to go in the garbage,” said Gene Clark, recycle and hazardous waste coordinator for Island County. Island Disposal, which offers curbside pickup service throughout the island, except for the City of Oak Harbor, will pick up Christmas trees next to the trash can on normal pickup days, but they must be chopped in 3-foot increments, said Tiffani Vlazek, customer service representative. Vlazek said the trees will be billed as an extra with the charge of $3.77 for every 3-foot section. There is no date set for when tree pickups will end. In the City of Oak Harbor, garbage customers will be able to put their trees out for pickup next to their yard waste bins on their

normal garbage days Jan. 2-7 and Feb. 2-6. Customers who aren’t part of the yard waste bin program may attach a prepaid yard waste bag to the base of the Christmas tree. The base needs to be under 3 inches, and the trees can’t contain tinsel or flock. Various groups also are offering to pick up trees at residences for a donation. Coupeville Boy Scout Troop 4058 will pick up trees Dec. 27 and Jan. 3 within the Coupeville town limits and in Admiral’s Cove. To schedule a pickup, contact Angi Carlson at 360-632-1750 or angi@whidbey.net Another group, the Chaoyang, China, orphanage team, is offering home pickups Jan. 3 from Coupeville to North Whidbey with residents not needing to be present. To schedule a pickup with that group, call Toni Crebbin at 360-672-5449 or send an email to crebbintoni@gmail.com The suggested donation is $10 and the deadline to arrange a pickup is Jan. 1. Meerkerk Gardens in Greenbank also will accept Christmas trees for recycling for a donation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 1-15. The mulch will be used in the gardens. Those interested in taking their trees to Meerkerk Gardens are asked to drop them off by the chip pile in the visiting parking lot and place their donation in the green selfpay entrance fee box. They ask that no trees with tinsel or flocked trees be dropped off.

Teachers lend Santa a hand By MICHELLE BEAHM Staff reporter

To meet the needs of students, teachers at North Whidbey Middle School are going above and beyond, not only in their classrooms, but outside them as well. Once a month, the school’s staff gathers for a themed potluck, during which the staff donates money to go toward a local organization that benefits students and the community. December’s beneficiary is always a financially strapped family or two from the middle school. The staff donates money as usual, but they also have the option of buying a gift for the family, based on gift tags on which the family members wrote requests. Diane Fisken, a teacher at the middle school and one

of the luncheon organizers, said some people do both. They also try to provide a gift certificate to a local grocery store during December. “Before Christmas, we deliver all the gifts to the family,” Fisken said. Which family selected is usually not revealed to staff members. She said they like to protect the anonymity of those they’re helping. “As teachers, we see students within our own school who have needs,” Fisken said, “and we try to help them without singling the

student out.” Fisken said the teachers typically raise $100 to $125. During November, they raised $237 for Help House. December’s luncheon, held Dec. 12, raised $200. Fisken said people are still turning in donations. “December’s (tally) was much greater (than usual),” Fisken said, “not counting the gifts individuals went out and bought for the family.” With the extra money, the group plans to purchase the items on the gift tags that weren’t already purchased, if they can, Fisken said.

Santa Claus picked up the presents for delivery on Dec. 19. “(The luncheon) brings the teachers together in a way that focuses outside of the classroom, and that’s a nice change for teachers,” Principal Bill Weinsheimer said. “The teachers see the needs of families throughout our community every day, and this is something small and concrete that they can do to address some of those needs.”

Island County residents now have the option of making their neighborhoods golf cart friendly. Commissioners unanimously approved a new ordinance last month permitting the cart zones and named Beverly Beach the unincorporated county’s first approved area. The five-year-long effort, which includes passage of a state law in 2010, began with South Whidbey resident David Pentz and his use of a golf cart to remain mobile in his community. After being warned by a sheriff’s deputy against using his cart, Pentz’s friends and neighbors set out to change the law. “Some of us in the community decided that just didn’t make sense,” said Tom Cahill. Though Pence lost his long battle with cancer last Thanksgiving, the effort to change the law moved forward. During the next four years, former state Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen helped

pass a bill allowing counties and cities to adopt regulations regarding golf carts. “I will be casting my vote in memory of David Pentz,” said Price Johnson. The law requires that 50 percent or more of residents on the roads in question sign a petition to request the golf cart zone. The carts will only be approved in areas with speed limits of 25 mph or less, and carts must meet seatbelt, rear view mirror and signaling requirements, according Public Works Director Bill Oakes. Drivers must be at least age 16 and have previous driving experience or education. A valid license is not required, but those with a revoked license will not be allow to drive the carts, Oakes said. Neighborhoods wanting to apply must pay an initial $150 fee, plus $100 per sign designating the area, with a $50 per sign annual fee for maintenance, Oakes said. The towns of Langley and Coupeville already approved golf cart ordinances under the new law.

Greenbank art studio named best gallery

R

ob Schouten Galler y in Greenbank was named Best Art Gallery in Western Washington in King-5’s 2014 contest. More than 185 other nominees competed for the title. Gallery owners Rob and Victory Schouten said they have the 30 Northwest artists they represent and their dedicated customers to thank for the title. “It was a happy surprise to find we had been nominated in the first place,” Rob Schouten said. “Once we knew, we let our customers and community know. It was great. Everyone was so enthusiastic, more than willing to vote and spread the word.” The Rob Schouten Gallery not only beat out the prestigious Seattle Art Museum and the popular favorite, Chihuly Garden and Glass, for the title, but edged out many of greater Seattle’s top galleries. Voters left a steady stream of more than 100 glowing comments about the gallery on the contest website during the race according to the release. “Art that evokes a feeling of real life; an unpretentious gallery. Down-to-earth folks are Rob and Victory. The place is a spirit lifter,” one commenter said. “Have traveled the world and never found such an eclectic, wonderfully presented,

diverse and premier buying opportunity as Rob and Victory Schouten’s wonderful gallery on Whidbey Island,” another wrote. Victory Schouten said she is grateful to the other Greenbank Farm tenants that share the location with Rob Schouten Gallery. “We are particularly happy to be a part of Greenbank Farm with its other fine galleries, shops and cafe,” Victory said. “We hope our win as “Best Gallery in Western Washington” adds to the buzz making the farm, and Whidbey Island itself, even more of a destination place, as it so deserves to be.” Established at Whidbey’s Greenbank Farm in 2008, Rob Schouten Gallery and Sculpture Garden showcases top-quality painting and sculpture, as well as fine art glass, jewelry, ceramics, encaustics, woodworking, printmaking and fibre arts created by some of the region’s finest artists. “Victory and I really love our gallery,” Rob Schouten said. “We are proud to represent the world-class artists who show with us. We also very much appreciate our wonderful customers and community with whom we very much value our warm connection.” n Visit www.robschoutengallery.com for more information.

We have reasons to count our blessings GUEST COLUMN

By Don C. Brunell

It’s that time of year when we count our blessings. In America, they are abundant, especially this year. For starters, the unemployment rate is down from 7 percent last December to 5.8 percent. Washington State mirrors the national average. Housing starts, retail sales and our gross domestic product are all up from last year, signs of an improving economy. Since consumer spending drives economic growth, low interest rates have helped. Home mortgages and auto loans hover in the 3 to 4 percent range. Contrast that to Russia, where interest rates are nearing 20 percent as bankers struggle to keep investors in the market as the ruble plunges. Thanks to new “fracking” technology, America is rapidly becoming energy independent, dropping the national average price of gasoline to $2.47; $2.76 in Washington state. Because of plunging gas prices, Bloomberg reports that holiday shoppers started the season with extra money in their wallets. The cheapest gasoline prices since 2010 amount to about $500 in annual savings for the average American. Compare that to the Europe where a gallon of petrol costs as much as $9.26 in Norway. In Italy, where a gallon of gasoline costs $8.11 and the average wage is $97 per day, 8.3 percent of a worker’s daily earnings go to pay for a gallon of fuel. This year also brought good news for Washington State agriculture. Washington’s apple growers celebrated a record harvest of 150 million boxes this year, compared to 129 million boxes in 2012. Fortunately, our region didn’t suffer a severe drought like California, a state that lost 428,000 acres of irrigated cropland and an estimated 17,000 part-time jobs because of water shortages. The University of California at Davis reports the statewide economic cost of the 2014 California drought is expected to total around $2.2 billion, nearly as much as the entire value of Washington’s 2012 apple production, our state’s largest agriculture crop. Sufficient water supplies kept our electric rates for homes, businesses and industries among the lowest in the world, while providing migrating salmon with ample stream flows. The Columbia River salmon runs were the best in 75 years, and on a single day last September, 67,000 salmon swam up the river past Bonneville Dam. That was four times as many as on any day in the 1990s. Good news this year for Boeing, as well. Reuters reports that Boeing has net orders of 1,274 for the year as of Dec. 2, and has delivered 647 aircrafts – nearly 20 percent more than chief rival Airbus. We still have a growing national debt, but we have the ability to stop borrowing and begin repaying it. America is blessed with enormous energy potential, creative people and industrious workers. That is a recipe for success, as long as our political leaders don’t shackle it. The best Christmas present we can give ourselves is the freedom to do what we do best: innovate.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Guest editorial

Navy shouldn’t have to justify training Editor, I picked up the Whidbey News-Times and was struck by the fact that our Navy base commander had to write an opinion piece to explain to the American people that training is vital to national security and the safety of everyone in this area. But apparently there are vocal groups, both on Whidbey Island and the Olympic Pennisula, who feel they need to utilize their First Amendment rights to stop the Navy from doing the necessary training to keep us safe, i.e., shutting down the OLF and stopping electronic warfare training in the Olympics. However, when does someone’s First Amendment right cross the line into terrorism? I don’t want to evoke McCarthy-era tactics of rooting out communism, but it deserves some discussion. All folks need to do is review the WWII tactics of Germany and Japan preying on weak or unprepared nations to remind us of the need to be

ready at all times to meet any threat to our safety as a nation. The FBI defines domestic terrorism in section 18 U.S.C. § 2331: “Domestic terrorism” means activities with the following three characteristics: • Involve acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law; • Appear intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping; and • Occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S. If you pay attention to the second item above, I would say these folks may be attempting to intimidate or coerce a civilian population and influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion. When the COER organizes town hall meetings for only their ilk and their politicians and files legal actions that cause the temporary shut down of OLF in 2013, this adversely affects necessary aircraft carrier landing practices, putting our troops and security at risk. When the folks on the Olympic peninsula say they don’t want the elec-

tronic warfare training to occur under the guise of safety to humans and animals, they actually make it less safe for all of us due to the Navy not being able to conduct needed training, which, in turn, makes the people they are defending less safe. However, as the above statute notes, as long as their actions don’t violate state or federal law, they are technically not terrorists. There is a fine line between exercising one’s rights and aiding and abetting our enemies. I know which side of the line I am on … do you? Thomas Kosloske Oak Harbor

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CONTINUED FROM A6

than ample news from newsrooms on shoestring budgets. As an OLFer, however, I request that civilians get to recruit mobile training emitters to homes and aviation museums — accompanied by gracious use of afterburner. Furthermore, at the 2015 NAS Whidbey Island Open House, we should have both the U.S. Navy Tac Demo and an EA-18G Tac Demo, the latter training against a mobile training emitter. As much as I should also request ample afterburner at OLF Coupeville for 2015, too, I would also encourage all holding a grudge against the U.S. Navy to watch “America’s Navy — The Shield” on YouTube. Perhaps my fellow Americans would comprehend why I returned the favor by sticking up for OLF Coupeville until the COER injunction threat was removed and OLF Coupeville reopened Jan. 6, 2014. Finally, to the forces fighting to take noncompliance with Island County Noise Disclosure to a court of law, fight on. You deserve a trial date, not a settlement agreement as much as the U.S. Navy that fights terrorism needs OLF Coupeville for field carrier landing practice “due to its remote location and low ambient lighting.” Let’s keep OLF Coupeville remote and de-escalate this crisis. Joe A. Kunzler Sedro-Woolley

Wonder why Navy keeps pushing EIS Editor, I am writing in regard to Janis Reid’s article about the budget for an increased number of EA-18G aircraft. She reported: “If the proposed budget passes through the U.S. Senate, the number of total

Growlers purchased by Congress would grow from the current 135 to 150, with a price tag of $1.46 million.” Don’t you mean $1.46 billion with a “B” for the 15 extra jets? Speaking of fact checks, Mike Van Voorst’s letter to the editor is absolutely correct in his statement that 111 decibels creates hearing loss after 1.5 minutes. He argues that since a jet passes a given point in much less time than 1.5 minutes, the Growlers are not a health hazard. But what if the decibel level is a session average of 128dB in Admiral’s Cove and the Field Carrier Landing Practice session at Outlying Field lasts 30 minutes? And what if the 30-minute sessions recur eight times between noon and midnight? The 128dB average OLF session level is a measured fact from independent acoustical engineers taken from the two-week onslaught in May of 2013. By the way, the decibel scale is logarithmic, meaning sound levels double for each 10dB increase. The Navy has made some changes since then in the way the OLF is used. In May 2013 there were five or six jets in the pattern with one passing a given point every 60 seconds. Now, the Navy has at most three jets in the OLF pattern at a given time. They persist in flying till midnight. The Navy is also using the one pattern approaching the field from the south over Admirals Cove 95 percent of the time. This concentrates the noise impact to homeowners near the OLF, along Fort Casey Road, Rhododendron Park and Admiral’s Cove. They Navy has not agreed in writing to any limits to the number of jets in the pattern, which pattern they use, the number of sessions or limiting the hours of OLF use to end before 10 p.m. In May 2013, the Navy demonstrated its utter disdain for citizens near the OLF and is now being forced to pass a long-overdue Environmental Impact Statement. It continues to resist any set limits to FCLP or moving them to a sparsely

populated area. FCLP is less than 10 percent of the training but is at the center of this controversy, and the noise signature of the EA-18G makes passing an EIS problematic at best. It is little wonder that the Navy keeps pushing the EIS into the future. Stephen Swanson, M.D. Coupeville

Disappointed paper ran Nortier opinion Editor, I have attended five Navy meetings recently: three concerned the Electronic Warfare Range, two on Growler jets at Whidbey, and will address some Navy statements. “The training is about detecting, sorting and identifying certain electronic signals amongst the deluge of existing signal clutter” — their description of the mission. What “deluge of existing signal clutter” would they expect to find in a National Heritage Wilderness location such as the Olympic National Park and Forest? “Extremely unlikely that the training conducted in the Pacific Northwest will adversely affect people, animals or the environment.” Note “unlikely.” Unfortunately, the Environmental Assessment had numerous omissions as well as old research. The most recent peer-reviewed research shows a serious disruption in the navigational compasses for the migratory birds of the Pacific Coast Flyway. Well-documented articles on the issue can be found on Truthout.org “The number, duration and frequency of aircraft flights in the operating area are only projected to increase by 10 percent, which equates to an average increase of one flight per day.” This conveniently omits the real numbers: 260 days per year, 2,900

training missions lasting between eight and 16 hours per day, at 15 locations. For each exercise, three jets — each capable of producing 150 decibels in noise. Each jet produces over 12 metric tons of CO2 per hour and burns over 1,300 gallons of toxic jet fuel, creating a significant impact on air quality as well as adding to critical climate change warming. “These are not low-altitude flights.” Obviously, this depends on your definition of “low.” In the various Navy meetings, the project manager has said the usual height is 6,000 feet above sea level … except where there are mountains (and there are mountains — the Olympics), and then they can go as low as 1,200 feet. “Most (flights) go unnoticed as our crews train in these areas today.” There are many residents of the area who refute this statement. Many of them were in comments to the Navy that were note recorded by the Navy but are in private videos posted on Vimeo. “No expected change in aircraft noise.” Numerous references exist that say this is a much noisier jet than the Prowler it replaces. See the Boeing website for specifications of them. “So vital services will not be interrupted.” Also numerous references exist that indicate they are at risk. The area’s 911 central area is on Octopus Mountain, where one of these emitters is scheduled to be located. I’m deeply disappointed that your paper would choose to print the Navy’s press release as sent to you with no critical commentary. It speaks volumes to your credibility as a news source that you would choose to do this. I am not a usual reader of your paper, nor am I likely to be. But those people who do read your newspaper regularly deserve better. A lot better. Linda Sutton Port Townsend

Park dist. to take time Island County service finding board member fees updated for 2015 By MICHELLE BEAHM

By JANIS REID

Staff reporter

Staff reporter

The North Whidbey Park and Recreation District will be taking a slightly different approach to finding a new executive director after the current director officially vacates his position. Gino Wolfe, the executive director of the district, officially resigned from his position, effective Jan. 1. “In the past, we’ve done searches; they’ve been short-term, quick searches,” said Sean Merrill, the chairman of the district’s board of commissioners. Now, the board members have decided that instead of doing a quick search to fill the position as soon as possible, they’re going to look for an interim director to fill the position for three to six months while they do an extended search for a permanent executive director of the district. “My concern is that we don’t go down the same road we went before,” said Commissioner Steve Hoffmire. “I guess the one big thing, and I think we all would agree on this, we have to get this right.” The district plans to advertise for the interim position until the end of the business day Friday, Jan. 16. They’ll officially start the search for a permanent director during their regular board meeting Jan. 22. Merrill appointed Hoffmire and Commissioner

North Whidbey Park and Recreation District Commissioner Steve Hoffmire discusses concerns over the proposed contract for a new head coach for the district’s swim team at the special meeting Wednesday night. Wendy Shingleton as a subcommittee, in charge of approaching the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce to put out the information that they’re searching for an interim director that would fit the district’s needs. Though the district will also be advertising the position in local newspapers and on its website. “If we can find somebody in Oak Harbor, somebody that loves Oak Harbor, is invested here, wants to see this place be successful,” Hoffmire said. “Maybe they’re not looking for a long-term position, as much as they want to help the Park and Rec be successful. The hope of the district is that they’ll hire an interim director to work for three to six months while they do an extensive search for the permanent director, though

being the interim director does not disqualify a person from becoming the permanent executive director, according to Merrill. Aside from looking locally, Hoffmire suggested going to nearby park and recreation districts to find someone who might be willing to work with the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District for a few months. The board will also begin advertising for a vacant commissioner’s position. The former chairman, Allan McDougall, quit with no notice at the special meeting Wednesday, Dec. 10. n For information about the vacancies or the district, visit the website at oakharborpool.com or call 360-6757665.

Fees for Island County Public Health services like septic inspections and water quality testing jumped by 8 percent as part of a comprehensive fee schedule change. Other than fees related to food service, public health fees haven’t been increased since 2006, according to Keith Higman, Island County public health director. The 8 percent increase in environmental services was accounted for in the 2015 budget and approved by the Island County Board of Health. Public Health struggled in recent years as service costs increase and fees stay static, Higman said. The 8 percent increase will bring an additional $50,000 to Higman’s 2015 budget. The county issues approximately 200 septic permits each year, but this can vary widely depending on how the building market is performing. In addition, state and federal grants, which comprise 45 percent of his budget, can be “volatile” and unpredictable, he said. In the short term, Island County commissioners agreed to assist public health to maintain current services by paying the difference out of general fund dollars. For 2015, the amount is $490,000. Higman is advocating for some type of dedicated funding source for public health moving forward. In addition to the Board of Health’s increase in service fees, Island County commissioners adopted a new fee schedule Monday that primarily impacts the planning department but also lists some public health and public works services where the requirements overlap. These fees include those for building inspections, building permits and design reviews. “Some fees are going up, some are going down, and we’ve eliminated some that were simply redundant,” said Planning Director David Wechner, who added that fees are updated on a three-year cycle. Among the main changes are the inclusion

of a $300 pre-application fee, which would be applied to any permit fees if approved, he said. Commissioner Rick Hannold expressed concern about how the fee changes will impact consumers. Wechner estimates that the county will capture $44,965 in additional revenue annually to cover the cost of services and that planning takes in roughly $500,000 in fees each year. Hannold said he is satisfied that the increase is “actually keeping up with inflation.” “What I think this does it better align the revenue capture to the work that’s being done,” said Commissioner Helen Price Johnson. “What you’ve done is take an indepth look and I appreciate that. What we need to be doing is charging for the cost and not charging for the things that are duplicate.” Price Johnson said she appreciates outreach conducted by Wechner with the local building community to ensure the permitting fees are fair. “They were supportive of the fee schedule as amended,” Wechner said. Commissioner Jill Johnson said she would support the updated fee schedule both because it keeps up with inflation and because there was a reduction of fees that should not have been in place. However, now that there is an overall increase in fees, Johnson she expects service levels to increase as well. “That expectation is there is a correlation … more costs equals the right level of service,” Johnson said. Wechner said his staff is also working on an administrative manual to help interpret and apply the fee schedule but could not give a completion date. The changes to the planning department’s fees were first unveiled in September and include in some instances combined fees for public health and public works. n Updated fee schedules can be viewed at www.islandcountyhealth.org and www.islandcounty.net/planning

In addition to Oak Harbor and state games, Long has announced district basketball games around the area, three seasons of Bellingham Bulldog semi-pro football and several state Little League tournaments. His most memorable moment was announcing Oak Harbor’s home games on the Wildcats’ way to the state football title in 2006.

By JIM WALLER Sports editor

“Hello, ‘Cat fans.” This familiar greeting from public address announcer Jay Long welcomes the crowd at each Oak Harbor High school football and basketball game. What started out as a fill-in gig for Long turned into a 25-year performance.

The following fall he was offered the job permanently by then-athletic director Stan Nelson, becoming just the third football announcer since 1950. The legendary John Vanderzicht handled the microphone from 1950-79; Ted Knutson followed from 1980-89. Long, a 1969 Oak Harbor High School graduate, majored in radio/TV broadcasting at the University of Washington. “Other than an internship at a Seattle TV station and working part time for a couple of local newspapers, I never really pursued the profession,” Long said. “Then

He began his Wildcat duties in 1989. 15 years later I became the ‘Voice of the Wildcats.’ “I’ve always been very sports-minded, and I just have a passion for it.” Long has missed calling only two Oak Harbor football games ---- once to umpire in a national softball tournament and the other to attend an away UW football game. Long began volunteering for Oak Harbor High School girls basketball games in December of 1990. A few years later, he started working the boys games when announcer Mert Waller stepped down to watch his

He “passed” and is now one of six announcers for the state basketball tournaments. Over the past 11 years, Long has announced numerous 3A and 4A games, including six championship contests that have been broadcast on television. “It’s been a thrill to work alongside such people as Kevin Calabro, Bill Krueger

Long’s success in sports goes beyond the announcer’s booth. After playing slow- and fastpitch softball for 20 years, he started umpiring for the Amateur Softball Association. His 25-year umpiring career includes games at the local, state, national and international levels. “The friendships and camaraderie I have gained through announcing and umpiring have been tremendous,” Long said. “And a very big thanks to my No. 1 supporter and my very best friend, my wife Suzie Long.” Long plans to continue announcing as “long as the voice holds out” and “as long as they’ll let me continue.” “So many people give back to the community and school,” he said. “This is just my small way to do so.” Oak Harbor High School handed Long a microphone in 1989 and he never let go. Holly farm owner rooted in life’s work After 50 seasons of tending holly, Henderson still feels magic of it By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

When Robby Henderson was 8, he was mesmirized by the sound of his own echoes as he sang to himself in the middle of a vast holly orchard. He was so captivated by the place that he remembers sitting on a large boulder and proclaiming to his parents that this holly farm would one day belong to him. A half century later, the boulder hasn’t budged. And nor has Henderson. Now 58, Robby Henderson lives in the house not far from the boulder, overlooking 10 acres of holly trees in a North Whidbey setting that he considers to be paradise. “I get to live in a park,” said Henderson. “I get to play in a park. I open the gate six weeks a year and people come in and enjoy. Then, I hibernate.” Henderson takes deep pride in the Henderson Holly Farm on Troxell Road. He and his crew are wrapping up another holiday season on the holly farm he’s called his own since 1980. Anywhere from 300-500 Christmas wreaths are hand-crafted each year from holly harvested at the Troxel Road farm, landing on front doors of some famous customers. Henderson’s parents started the family’s original holly farm business at their farm on Degraff Road in Oak Harbor in 1952 and later purchased the old Morrell farm on Troxell Road so they had more holly to pick from. Henderson grew up the youngest of six children on the original farm with each chipping in on the work from an early age. “I can honestly say, I’ve been working since I was probably 8-years-old,” Henderson said. “From the moment I could climb

A musically-inclined man who once lived life in the fast lane during the rockand-roll era of the 1970s has slowed down dramatically, particularly since he was diagnosed with hepatitus C in the early 1990s. He says a combination of medications makes him feel like he has the flu most of the time, but he doesn’t let it affect his outlook on life. As he’s matured, he’s mellowed. “It’s OK. I don’t like to complain,” Henderson said. “I spent a lot of years dying in my chair and refuse to do that anymore.” Henderson is inspired by his work crew, some that have been with him more than 25 years, hand-crafting wreaths and other creations

The atmosphere inside the workplace at Henderson’s Holly Farm on Troxell Road makes for a special time of year come Christmas time. ‘Christmas is every day,’ says Rob Henderson, with Honey Bear. ‘We should all open up our hearts and treat everybody the same, not just one day a year, but everyday.’ that are purchased locally and sent all over the world. He gets constant satisfaction from the looks on customers’ faces. “They have appreciation for the product,” he said of his team of workers. “They put their hearts into it. It takes a crew of 10 to make

this happen.” The appreciation is mutual among workers, who look after Henderson. Steve Roullier has worked for him for 26 years. “He’s a unique man,” Roullier said. “That’s why I’m here. I want him to live long enough to enjoy this

place without hurting himself.” “Robby is one of the best people I’ve ever met,” said longtime friend and coworker Joel Harmon. “He’s got a kind heart and a generous soul.” One of Henderson’s closest companions is an

English Mastiff named Honey Bear, who is a customer favorite. “She is 158 pounds of browned-eyed love,” Henderson said. “She captures the hearts of all the people who come to the farm. She’d be a real good therapy dog.”

SANTA LETTERS CONTINUED FROM A1 Dear Santa, I would like my dad for Christmas. Why, you ask? Because my dad is on deployment. My mom and brother would like that too. I have done some bad things, but I have learned from it. I hope you can do it.

From, Christian Linsley Third Grade

Dear Santa, I hope that you are having a very happy, jolly time at your work shop. I loved seeing you at the mall. I also loved the candy canes. If possible, these are the things I would like for Christmas: an iPhone 7 Samsung phone with a light green cover and teal converse. I would like to get my friend Kendall a pet cat and my other friend Pheonix a big truckload of beef because they have been nice and a good friend to me. Thanks!

Love, Brooklynn Reuter Third Grade

BROAD VIEW ELEMENTARY Dear Santa, Hi Santa. I hope you know I have been good. And I do not want to trouble you too much. Well, I would like an easy bake. But if you can’t get it, OK. Because that’s not what I want to know. I always wonder if you like the Seattle Seahawks? It’s OK if you don’t, though. Also, how old are you? I love Christmas. I like to decorate the tree. Me and my aunt do the decorating. I got a lot of my friends and family presents. If you did not live so far, I would get you one too, but of all the places you could live, you decided to live in the North Pole. My favorite part is when we are all together.

Sincerely, Brianna Edmon

Dear Santa, Am I on the naughty list? Yes or no. I love Christmas! I hope the Christmas Spirit will spread. I would like a Furby for Christmas. Sorry if our house is a mess, but I still love my family. At least I have a home.

Love, Lynnlana Phillips (with cute heart drawing) Second Grade

Dear Santa or Kris Kringle, I would like to say, you must have to wash your pants, shirts and hats after

each Christmas because you go down the chimney; you must get really dirty. Happy holidays. Good bye.

Love, Adam Bell

Dear Santa, I will give you a present on Christmas eve. I hope you like it.

From, Lily Wright Third Grade

OLYMPIC VIEW ELEMENTARY Dear Santa, I hope you have a merry Christmas. Can I have a Seahawks hat and crazy sand and an American Girl doll? I have been taking care of my sister because she was sick and I love her.

Love, Matayah Delano First Grade

Dear Santa, How are you doing in the North Pole? I want a marine’s flag. I want to put it on the wall. Thank you. Love, Nathan Martinez-Campos First Grade

Dear Santa, I wish you a merry Christmas. I’d like a 49ers hat. I always help my family.

Love, Layla Muro First Grade

Dear Santa, I believe that I can make a difference. I will help people in need. I will help people who need help. And can you help me be a good kid? That is all I want.

From, Aiden Eastman Third Grade

Dear Santa, I believe in Santa and want to help him and other boys and girls. I will help make wishes come true. I will never stop believing in others. I will encourage people to never stop believing in themselves. They always have to reach for the stars!

world a better place by giving food to the poor. I wish I could cure all the diseases on the earth. Sincerely, Austin Bailey Third Grade

HILLCREST ELEMENTARY Whidbey’s lone elk was spotted recently on Silver Lake Road. Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel say the male elk is likely restless this time of year as he comes out of rutting season. He has been spotted taking interest in lawn ornaments and other yard equipment.

Dear Santa, For Christmas this year, I would really like a skateboard and maybe a little ramp to practice on. I would love it if you could find me one, and trust me, I totally believe in you! Thanks again.

Sincerely, Halia P. Stegeman Third Grade Merry Christmas

Dear Santa, Thank you for coming to our world so that everyone can have toys. I love baking cookies for you because it is fun. I wish that Christmas was every day and we got different toys every day, and everyone was homeschooled. Thank you for coming to our world so that everyone can have toys. I love when we go shopping for other people in our family. We love going to see you; it is fun when we get candy canes from you. We like them. They’re really minty. I bet that you are working very hard on those toys of yours. I am very happy that every year we get presents. Thank you for coming.

London Sillavan Third Grade

Dear Santa, What I want for Christmas is to be with my family and friends. I want that cause I know Christmas is not about new toys, opening presents, it’s about being together! I also want to see you! And I hope you come to our house and eat cookies and milk. We may not have any, but I hope you come! The pink tree is mine, put my presents there! The tree may be in my room or on the bar in the kitchen. I love Christmas!

LONELY ELK CONTINUED FROM A1 his species is not allowed. Although he’s seemed to adjust well to his new range around Strawberry Point on North Whidbey, this is the time of year he has tended to get in the most trouble with property. Downes pointed to a few minor resident complaints last year during post-rut when the elk knocked over yard ornaments and lawn furniture and seemed particularly fascinated with a five-gallon bucket. “He does get frisky,” Downes said. “He was out there basically playing kick the can with a five-gallon bucket.” He said he’s had no complaints so far in 2014 but is mindful that it’s the time of year when elk still possess excess energy. Since he’s the only elk on Whidbey, “Bruiser,” as he’s called by local residents, also didn’t experience the normal rut period when elk spar with other males and attempt to round up females for mating. “His body went through the process of rut,” Downes

said. “He wasn’t able to engage in the normal dance, so to speak.” So, should residents around Strawberry Point hide their plastic snowmen? Downes wouldn’t go that far. He said local residents have been understanding and are protective of the elk. There’s even a neighborhood joke. “It’s a standing joke that no yard gnome is safe,” he said. Elk haven’t been common on Whidbey Island in more than a century. Downes’ theor y is Bruiser belongs to the mainland North Cascades herd and swam across Skagit Bay to the Whidbey

shores. The first sighting on North Whidbey came in September of 2012, and he’s remained in the general Strawberry Point area ever since. “He’s kind of liking where he is, I guess,” Downes said. Particularly when a bucket or a gnome is around. The elk also apparently had a run-in with an electricfence controller, which was moved to safer grounds. Downes characterized the elk’s behavior as playful and curious, not aggressive. “He’s got a large, heavy set of antlers on his head,” Downes said. “Sometimes, he needs to bump into things.”
