ames Franco was involved in at least one movie this year that is unlikely to raise the ire of a nuclear-armed, Communist dictator. Donning his art-house director’s hat, the comely Hollywood star is bringing a book with a Whidbey Island connection to the silver screen. Caleb Powell, a 1986 graduate of Coupeville High School, and his former University of Washington professor, David Shields, created a oneof-a-kind dissertation on art and life by traveling to the mountains and arguing for days. They turned a transcribed, edited version of their verbal skirmishes into a book, “I Think You’re Totally Wrong: A Quarrel,” which has been published by Knopf this year. Franco, also a former student of Shields’, got his hands on the a draft

of the book and decided to turn it into a movie. One year ago, Powell and Shields argued in front of movie cameras; Franco is now trying to get the movie accepted into film festivals with the hope that a distributor will pick it up. It’s been an exciting few years for Powell, a stay-at-home dad and writer in Seattle. Powell has strong connections to Coupeville. His parents still live in his boyhood home on the banks of Penn Cove and he keeps in touch with many Central Whidbey families. Although he’s an up-and-coming writer — he hopes — who’s steeped in literary culture, Powell said he was a typical kid growing up in Coupeville. He was a jock and the school’s quarterback until a serious car accident put him into a coma for four days. He said the accident changed his perspective on life, but he didn’t become seriously

interested in writing, literature or even politics until his college years and beyond. Still, one thing he’s always been good at, he said, is arguing. “I’ve always been argumentative with people,” he said. “Always played the devil’s advocate.” Apparently it runs in the family. In 1993, he explained, he wrote a letter to the Whidbey News-Times expressing support for allowing openly gay people to serve in the military. SEE QUARREL, PAGE A4

Coupeville residents got a Christmas Day surprise when a pod of orcas swam into Penn Cove and stayed awhile Thursday. Anywhere from five to seven transient orcas were spotted, and word traveled fast through social media as a crowd of people gathered on the Coupeville Wharf and gazed. Among them was Lynda

The owner of a 128-foot crab boat that caught fire and sank in Penn Cove in 2012 has pleaded guilty to a criminal charge. Ror y Westmoreland, a scrap metal dealer and owner of the Deep Sea vessel, pleaded guilty in Island County District Court

Tuesday to vessel abandonment, a misdemeanor. Deputy Prosecutor Chris Anderson said sentencing will be held at a later date. He’s going to recommend a top-of-the-range sentence of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Under the plea bargain, Westmoreland won’t have to SEE DEEP SEA, PAGE A4

Be Smart–

Don’t Drink and Drive Aside from the legal consequences of drinking and driving in the form of a ticket or loss of license, impaired driving can result in property damage, injury or even death. With this in mind, we would like to remind you to be smart when drinking. Drink in moderation and monitor the amount of alcohol you have consumed. Designate a sober driver at the beginning of the night and give that person the keys. If no one is capable of driving, have some money ready for a taxi ride home. It is better to leave your car behind and come back for it than to have it totaled in an accident. If you are drinking at a friend’s house, you will limit their liability in the event of your accident and keepa potentially unsafe driver off the road. When you go for your next drink, just remember that you’re not the only one that may pay for the consequences of your decisions.

Sailor completes tire flip feat By JANIS REID Staff reporter

In a monumental effort for his dad, Petty Officer Michael McCastle completed 13 miles flipping a 250pound tire in cold and wet weather Saturday. Though McCastle lost his father the day before the event, he said his spirit bolstered his efforts. “I felt like he was there with me,” McCastle said. “I was where he needed me to be, and I drew strength from that.” While raising awareness for Wounded Warrior Project was his primary objective, McCastle raised more than $700. He said he plans to leave the website active until Jan. 1 to allow for additional donations. Funds raised will be donated to WWP in honor of Alvin Decker, a veteran who lost his battle with personal demons, according to McCastle. “It wasn’t about the monetary donations,” McCastle. “I like people just to know about WWP and their mission.” McCastle said during the course of the fundraising challenge he got “banged up pretty good, but it’s nothing that won’t heal.” He flipped the tire 137 spans of a 500-foot paved street starting at around 4 a.m. and finishing around 2 p.m. His forearm muscles are torn up, he said, along with his hips and back, and even though he wore gloves he broke some fingernails almost completely off trying to grip the tire. McCastle was hospitalized after a July attempt to break the Guiness World Record for most pullups

He completed 3,202 pullups, 828 short of the standing record, but raised more than $10,000 for WWP. McCastle’s girlfriend, Norma-Jean Hunter, was on hand to lend support and to keep track of his progress. Hunter, a personal trainer, said it was hard to see McCastle in pain but that “pain is only temporary.” “I’m so proud of him,” Hunter said. “I know what it means to him.” Sarah Gallella, a veteran herself, brought her young sons who hugged and highfived McCastle when he finished a lap. “As a mother, I am always looking for interesting, posi-

tive things to introduce my boys to,” Gallella said. “I was impressed that Mike was using such a unique way to bring awareness to Wounded Warrior Project. He was a great role model on how to set a goal, experience a personal set back with his father passing, and still persevere using Navy values, honor, courage and commitment, all with a smile on his face.” “I was really impressed that he could lift the tire,” said 10-year-old Edward. “My brother and I together could barely lift the tire.” McCastle is already looking toward his next challenge, a rope climb to raise money for Parkinson’s dis-

ease research in the spring. Among other health problems, McCastle’s father suffered with Parkinson’s, so the cause hits close to home. “I think I’ll be ready to start training in a couple of weeks,” he said. McCastle said around 15 people showed up to the event throughout the day and even more honked as they drove by to show support. “I feel thankful, humble and blessed by everyone who supported me,” he said. Rep Fitness in Oak Harbor is joining an effort to break a world record for the largest group workout Jan. 3. The event, which will start at noon at Rep Fitness, 3075 N. Oak Harbor Road, will span 11 countries and thousands of individual groups are expected to participate. “This is the time of year people use to re-establish their goals,” said Steven Schultz, Rep Fitness trainer and local organizer for the event. Schultz said the aim of the event is to help people kick-start their fitness regime and help combat obesity for a good cause. For each person who attends the workout, event sponsor Visalus will donate 30 kids meals through their Project 10 Kids program. “It just raises awareness,” Schultz said. “People can

Man charged with bat beating By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter

An Oak Harbor man is facing a felony charge for allegedly hitting another man with a bat and breaking his arm in the Safeway parking lot Nov. 28, according to court documents. Prosecutors charged 43-year-old Charles Bruce Daugherty in Island County Superior Court Dec. 3 with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon. Daugherty’s bail was set at

$10,000 at a Nov. 28 hearing. Brian Jackson, the 27-yearold alleged victim, reported that he was standing outside the Radio Shack when Daugherty confronted him. Jackson said Daugherty pulled a metal baseball bat from a backpack and swung it at his upper torso and head. Jackson said he put his arm up in defense and the bat struck his arm, according to a report by Officer William Wilke. Jackson was transported to the hospital for treatment. The officer located

Daugherty later that night. He was walking with a backpack that had a bat sticking out of it. Daugherty told the officer that Jackson pulled a knife on him and he defended himself with the baseball bat, the report states. Wilke noted in his report that Jackson had stabbed Daugherty in the chest during a fight earlier this year. Jackson was arrested, but the case was later dismissed because investigators were unable to prove the stabbing was not in self defense, the

report states. Wilke wrote that he was unable to find a knife at the scene and a witness did not report seeing a knife. Jackson denied have a knife. He said the police had confiscated his two knives and a machete when he was recently arrested for assaulting a woman, the report states. Jackson suffered a broken arm that required surgery to fix, according to the police report.

Rep Fitness, which opened in January 2014, specializes in personal training by appointment only and is owned by Oak Harbor graduates Kyle Isaacson and Tyson Van Dam. “Everyone who works here grew up here,” Shultz said. QUARREL CONTINUED FROM A1 His father wrote a letter in response, arguing in no uncertain terms that his son was wrong. Yet it was Powell’s penchant for arguing, for asserting a position without blinking, that ultimately drew Shields to him. The two men first met when Powell was a student in Shields’ writing course but then went their separate ways for more than a decade. Shields became an established, award-winning and prolific writer. His book, “Reality Hunger,” earned him a visit to the “Colbert Report” television show. Meanwhile, Powell moved to the United Arab Emirates and then back to Seattle, where he is the married father of three girls. He wrote a coming-of-age novel, “This seething ocean, that damned eagle,” and other works, but mainstream success has eluded him. Powell said he eventually reconnected with Shields, but that — ironically — became an argument after the professor initially refused to “blurb” his work. Shields said he came up with the idea for a book that would play with the tradition of Plato and Socrates, student and teacher. He said he wanted to argue with someone who could challenge his deeply held ideals about art, life and culture. “I wanted to see if someone could completely torpedo my world view, my view of art,” he said. Shields said he initially approached others, but the preparatory discussions often became too angry and contentious. But then he turned to Powell and found his perfect foil. “No one is as quarrelsome and contrary as Caleb,” he said. “If I say it’s black, he’ll say it’s white. In many ways, he is my perfect antithesis.” At the same time, Shields said Powell understands the playfulness and showmanship involved in a good argument. After preparing for a year, the two men headed into the mountains for four days of quarreling. They taped the entire discussion and then edited it down on paper. Although the resulting discussion ranges a wide swath of subject matter — from the deeply personal to the stuffy — Powell said it’s ultimately focused on the relationship between life and art. “To my slight relief, I was able to defend

“No one is as quarrelsome and contrary as Caleb. If I say it’s black, he’ll say it’s white. In many ways, he is my perfect antithesis.” David Shields, author my views,” Shields said. “...I was able to muster an argument.” Shields said he was teaching at the Warren Wilson College in North Carolina when he shared a draft of the book with Franco, who was a student in the master of fine arts program. The actor/director/writer read it overnight and announced to Shields that he wanted to make it into a movie. Powell said he was actually on Whidbey Island when he heard the news. He was excited but realistic about the prospects that a film would really become a priority. But then Franco called Shields and invited them down to shoot the film near Los Angeles. The original idea was to recreate the arguments from the book. Serendipitously, Shields said, a real-life argument over issues at the heart of the book broke out between himself, Powell and Franco. As a result, much of the focus of the movie is on the real quarrels. Franco is in the film, playing himself and arguing his views. Powell said it was definitely a kick to work with someone as famous as Franco, who also cares deeply about art. He hasn’t had a chance to discuss “The Interview” with Franco, but he certainly has an opinion about it. He said it’s simply absurd that Sony would give in to terroristic threats and pull the movie, which stars Seth Rogen and Franco. The comedy prompted an international incident after U.S. officials said North Korea had hacked Sony’s computers and leaked executives’ emails in retaliation. The film is about two Americans’ plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Most importantly for Powell, a brush with Hollywood has made him more interesting to younger relatives. “I’ve definitely shot up a lot in the cool uncle department,” he said.

DEEP SEA CONTINUED FROM A1 pay restitution for the cost of cleaning up the estimated 5,555 gallons of fuel that spilled into Penn Cove, forcing the temporary closure of the shellfish farm. The Department of Ecology recovered $1.56 million in spill response expenses from the National Pollution Fund Center; the federal government may go after Westmoreland to recoup the money, according to the Department of Ecology. Last year, the state levied a $301,000 fine against Westmoreland for failing to

report an oil spill, for failing to clean up an oil spill and for the oil spill itself. Westmoreland had the boat towed to Penn Cove in December of 2011. On the night of May 12, 2012, the Deep Sea crab boat caught fire — in what was later determined to be arson — while illegally anchored on state-owned aquatic lands, according to the Department of Ecology. Firefighters attacked the fire that night and the next day, but it rolled on its port side and sank in the evening

of May 13, spilling fuel. Diving contractors hired by the U.S. Coast Guard removed 3,100 gallons of oil from the sunken vessel. The boat was raised and towed to King County, where it was eventually cut up into scrap metal. In an unrelated case last year, the state Attorney General’s Office charged him in King County Superior Court for allegedly abandoning about 40 barrels of hazardous waste in a property from which he was evicted in 2012, according to court documents.

An osprey nest on top of a light pole on South Whidbey will be moved.

Osprey nest to be moved By KATE DANIEL Staff reporter

A couple of ospreys will be returning from their southern migration to a brand new nest location come springtime. The nest is presently located atop a 100-foot light pole on the South Whidbey High School football field. The South Whidbey School District, Puget Sound Energy, Whidbey Audubon Society and Osprey Solutions are working together to relocate the nest to a more favorable location. Brian Miller, director of facilities for the school district, presented the issue to Osprey Solutions, a Seattlebased environmental consulting firm, which suggested the implementation of a nest platform and new post. The company has successfully provided similar nest solutions for numerous communities including Portland, Ore., Seattle, Spokane and Bellevue, and is headed by raptor biologist Jim Kaiser.

In its current place, the nest is potentially hazardous to both humans and birds, Miller said. Droppings of twigs and bird feces from the nest present a potential hazard to passersby while the structural integrity of the pole is compromised by the size and weight of the nest, according to Miller. The heat of the field lights could ignite the nest and injure or kill the osprey, a federally protected raptor species. According to Osprey Solutions, the average diameter of an osprey nest is 41 inches, and the nests typically accumulate enough material to weigh at least 650 pounds after 15 breeding seasons. Ospreys return north from their winter migration to the Southwest and Mexico and add more materials to their nests each year. The post installation cost of $3,000 will be funded by Puget Sound Energy (PSE). The Whidbey Audubon Society will donate $600

ORCAS

Transient orcas were from T46 pod. CONTINUED FROM A1 be resident orcas, were spotted in Admiralty Inlet Friday morning. The months of October, November and December are the best time to see resident orcas around Whidbey Island as they feed on salmon returning to area rivers, said Howard Garrett, co-director of the Freeland-based Orca Network. Garrett said the transient orcas in Penn Cove were identified from the T46 pod that

for the new platform. The remainder of the cost, about $3,100, will be paid for by the school district. According to Mel Walters, PSE’s Avian Program manager, PSE has relocated about 60 osprey nests thus far. He explained that the osprey’s natural nesting place, snags atop tall mature trees, has been largely annihilated due to such trees being felled and young trees not being permitted to mature. Walters said that about 50 percent of Washington’s ospreys have become accustomed to nesting atop power poles instead of tree snags since they were raised in nests built upon such artificial structures. “My experience working with ospreys for many, many years is if you don’t give them a place to nest they’ll nest where you don’t want them to,” he said. All eight light poles at the high school field will be retrofitted with raptor nest excluder devices to inhibit osprey from perching or nesting there.

have been spotted for months in Puget Sound. He said orcas are spotted only a few times a year in Penn Cove, but dozens of times a year in Admiralty Inlet. “I’ve lived here three years and I’ve missed them every time except this year,” said Bonnie Gretz of Coupeville. The orcas arrived in the early afternoon and stayed nearly three hours, Gretz said. She said she thought she saw seven orcas, including two males and a calf. “It was wonderful,” she said. “Last year, I got to see them on New Year’s Day at Fort Casey. It was a nice start to the year.” Like Gretz, Lynda Richards got the news of the orcas in the cove through social media. “We were having a late lunch and I just happened to be on Facebook for a minute,” Richards said. “I read, ‘Orcas in Penn Cove right now.’ I was like, ‘Whoa!’ We went down to the wharf.”

Man hospitalized after car strikes motorcycle on Highway 20 By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

An Oak Harbor motorcyclist was transported to Whidbey General Hospital Tuesday morning after his Harley Davidson was struck by a car on State Highway 20 in Oak Harbor. The motorcyclist, James Waters, was traveling northbound on the highway when the car, traveling southbound, turned left onto E. Whidbey Avenue and struck the bike at the intersection, according to officer Mike Clements

of the Oak Harbor Police Department. Clements cited the driver, Arnel Venture of Oak Harbor, with a failure to yield the right of way. “The driver said he’s not sure what happened,” Clements said. The accident occurred in darkness at about 7:45 a.m., prompting response from Oak Harbor police, Oak Harbor Fire Department and Whidbey General EMS. Emergency medical personnel assisted the motorcyclist, who was laying on

the highway, and placed him in a Whidbey General emergency vehicle. The motorcyclist might’ve suffered a broken leg and complained

IN OUR OPINION

Make openness, transparency a priority If you work for the government, “the people” are ultimately your boss. It’s a cliche, to be sure. It’s ungrammatical and oversimplified. And yet — it’s an idea that’s vital to our democracy but sometimes forgotten by our leaders. In the new year, those fortunate enough to work for the government, particularly those in leadership positions, should make a resolution to be as open, honest and transparent as possible. That means handing over documents to people who ask for them without putting anyone through a rigmarole. Sure, there are documents that obviously shouldn’t be released, but agencies are supposed to lean toward openness when there’s any doubt. Or better yet, posting papers with public interest online is an easy way to avoid time-consuming requests. In addition, agencies should welcome public involvement in the decision-making process. Not only should public meetings be advertised as required by law, but elected officials should work to ensure that agendas are full and detailed and that meetings are held when normal people can actually attend. Locally, Whidbey General Hospital and Island Transit have been the veritable poster children for government opacity. Hospital commissioners hold their monthly meetings at 7 a.m. on Mondays. They fired the guy who taped the meetings. The agendas are the bare minimum. When a hospital administrator was accused of assaulting a patient, the hospital investigated the allegations through a “quality assurance committee” whose purpose is supposed to be to ensure the proper delivery of services and improvement of care. After the hospital resisted a prosecutor’s subpoena for the committee’s report, a judge suggested that the quality assurance process — instead of a straightforward disciplinary investigation — was the hospital’s attempt to do an end run around the state’s Public Records Act. At Island Transit, on the other hand, the lack of openness didn’t seem to be willful for the most part but just became normalized over the years. Officials, for example, stopped posting agenda and budget information online. When financial problems came to light, the director and board’s initial reaction was to minimize the problems instead of going public and engaging the community. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Navy

Supports Navy easement around OLF Coupeville Editor, For somebody who was supposed to dial back my involvement in OLF Coupeville land-use issues, I sure feel the need to speak up. When a COER spokeswoman claims a Navy easement will be harmful, she forgets that OLF Coupeville is here to stay for Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) training. When the rescoping of the Navy’s EA-18G EIS was published in the national register, due to fiscal issues and ongoing patriotic efforts by OLF supporters such as myself, the Department of the Navy (DoN) announced, “The DoN is not considering alternative locations for FCLP training.” It’s game over for COER in that regard; the question is , “What’s next?” One way of settling that question is America’s Navy should continue purchasing easements and also disclose

all previous easements in a public statement. As Navy easements keep OLF Coupeville primed for field carrier landing practice, NAS Whidbey Island will continue “due to its remote location and low ambient lighting” per a factsheet of theirs. Public disclosure will help expose the truth about the Central Whidbey land use fiasco and force solutions — hence my endorsement of Judy Gremmel’s and Isobel Kameros’ group’s litigation. I’m also happy Captain Mike Nortier wrote in the Whidbey News-Times. A monthly column from him could only help bridge the massive civilianmilitary divide as displayed in the Dec. 20 Whidbey News-Times letters to the editor. Finally, on a personal level, as much as I should request ample afterburner at OLF Coupeville for OLF supporters in 2015 sometimes standing 525 feet away, I would also encourage my fellow Americans to watch “America’s Navy — The Shield” on YouTube. Perhaps my fellow Americans would comprehend why this patriot returned

the favor by defending OLF Coupeville until the COER injunction threat was eliminated so OLF Coupeville could reopen Jan. 6, 2014. Joe A. Kunzler Sedro-Woolley

Jet noise is a way of life, so get over it Editor, What the hell is going on on this island? I have lived here 22 years. Jet noise is a way of life, so get over it. My life was saved more than once. In 1969/70, the jets you see upon the arrival of our city flew close air support on our unit to allow me to live. If people think this is an intrusion to their lifestyles, please just leave and retain your dignity. The articles you present to garnish favor against the Navy only makes people realize how little you have contributed to life in this area. Just leave. Please allow me retire without the chatter of fools. Gary Ciminski Oak Harbor

Robotics team builds tools, life skills By CRISTINA RAMIREZ

n The Whidbey Wildcat

Robotics Team Reporter

Thanks to the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act, an act that funds programs like the Robotics Club through federal funding, the Oak Harbor High School Robotics Team was able to purchase a full spectrum laser ML-40 machine, valued at $2,000, equipped with a program to carve designs or cut pieces. In the high school, the students have already carved labels into calculators, balances and coffee cups. If the district had turned to outside sources, it would have cost both more money and time for the school. This way, both the students and district are profiting. The cooperation between students and teachers on a client level is teaching the Robotics Team life skills such as responsibility and how to handle deadlines and communication. “I want the kids to understand what it means to do your best for a client and how to deal with it when things go wrong,” robotics teacher Che Edoga said. Previously, the club has created its own Lego measuring tool, a small but indispensable tool to have when dealing with Lego robots. When they took the tool to competitions, such as FIRST Lego League last spring, other teams needed the tool as well but couldn’t afford to buy it. Because of the laser machine, the club has the ability to create the tools at a rate of one per day and for less than a quarter of the cost. Now the club is at work to make not only tools for its team, but to pass out at competitions for free.

Robotic team will present to the public their robotic designs for this year’s FRC, or FIRST Robotics Competition, challenge. The community will vote on what robot the team will build. The group will receive the challenge Jan. 3 and design and build a 120pound robot in six weeks for the upcoming robotic competitions in March. Everyone is invited to the presentation Contributed photo

Oak Harbor High School Robotic Team students work on a robotics project in Che Edoga’s class. The team will present to the public their designs 6-8 p.m. Jan. 9 at the high school. “For us,” Edoga said, “we are doing what we can to make more engineers who in turn will go out and make the world a better place. That

includes making Lego tools for kids so that they have a better time working with Legos.”

OBITUARIES

Chochon

Alvin M. Chochon

Alvin M. Chochon, age 80, of Coupeville, Wash., passed away peacefully Dec. 19, 2014, from a fast-moving sporadic prion disease of the brain called CreutzfeldtJakob (CJD). Born July 16, 1934, to Joseph and Victoria Chochon in Humphries, Neb., Al was the youngest of eight children, including one brother and six sisters. Growing up as a hard-working Midwest boy on a farm in Nebraska, Al developed an affinity for horses and all things cowboy, which was a lasting love during his lifetime. After attending high school in Columbus, Neb., and then a year at University of Nebraska as a dedicated Cornhusker fan, Al signed up for the Army in 1954, serving in the Korean war as an Artillery Specialist stationed in Germany until 1956. With an honorable discharge after two years, Al finished his education in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in finance and accounting at Arizona State University. It wasn’t long after this that Al met a beautiful red-headed flight attendant named Joan. Quickly realizing he hit the jackpot, he married Joan within 10 months of their meeting in San Francisco, moving to Cocoa Beach, Fla., where Al joined The Martin Company

and worked on the Gemini Space Program with NASA. The next five years ushered in the beginning of Al’s journey into fatherhood with the birth of two daughters, Kelly and Kim. As Al continued to advance his career, he held executive management positions as controller, general manager and president/ CEO with several companies in various industries. With these positions came the opportunity for the family to move several times, living in Florida, Colorado, Southern California, the Bay Area and Seattle. Al and Joan finally settled in Coupeville on Whidbey Island in 2004, building their dream home by the water near good friends and neighbors, while Al continued to work as a real estate broker for Windermere Real Estate, and was an active member of the Coupeville Lion’s Club, Knights of Columbus and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Al will be remembered for his ability to tell jokes on any subject at any given moment, preferably with a good Cuban cigar and glass of scotch in hand, as well as his generous and loving spirit, which unknowingly earned him the honor of “second father” to many of Kelly and Kim’s high school and college friends. Valuing hard work and determination, Al continued to take care of business until CJD prevented him from performing his much-loved real estate work in September. Al is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Joan Chochon; his daughter Kelly Chochon Schactler and son-in-law David Boschee; daughter Kim Chochon and grandchildren Jack, Joseph and Anna Schactler; granddog Lola; grandcat Besos; sisters Lillian Chochon, Millie Martens and Eleanor Borders; sister-in-law Jean Goodwine; and many wellloved nephews, nieces, cousins and friends who enriched his life for the last 80 years. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at St. Mary’s Catholic

Church in Coupeville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Al’s honor may be made to National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center (www.cjdsurveillance. com). Family and friends are encouraged to share memories and condolences at www. whidbeymemorial.com

Upon Dick’s retirement in 1981, they moved to St. Louis, Mo., and subsequently Tucson, Ariz., and Oak Harbor, Wash. Throughout it all, their passion was the stage, based on Dick’s time as a professional singer in Las Vegas and Dottie’s love of theater and dance. While in the Air Force, they were known for their elaborate stage shows; later in life, they were both heavily involved in little theater, including the Whidbey Island Playhouse and Anacortes Community Theater. Dottie possessed a loving heart and beautiful spirit. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, in 2003 and is survived by her three children, Mark (60), Rick (58) and Chris (56); seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Dottie’s family plans her interment with Dick at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Wash., with a graveside ceremony in the spring. March 23, 1924 – Dec. 16, 2014 Concord, Calif.

Geraldine Verrelle Burke, 90, passed away peacefully Dec. 16, 2014, at the Montecito Assisted Living Center in Concord, Calif. She was attended to by her two

daughters and two sons until the end. Geraldine, or “Jerry,” as she was always known, was born in Seattle March 23, 1924, to Milo Jungbluth and Verrelle (O’Leary) Jungbluth of Oak Harbor, Wash. She had one brother, Edward, who predeceased her. She was raised on Whidbey Island, in Washington’s Puget Sound, on land from the original land donation claim awarded to her ancestor, Ulrich Freund of Switzerland in 1851. She was proud to have been raised on the island and to have kept a connection to it up until her death. She graduated from Washington State University in 1945; while there, she earned her private pilot’s license, one of the few women at that time to do so. She married the love of her life, William David Burke, Aug. 15, 1948, in Oak Harbor. They were married for 64 years, until his death in October of 2012. Jerry had four children, William (Pam), of Austin, Texas; Susan (Lowell) Williamson, of Burbank, Calif.; Michael (Patricia O’Donnell), of Wilton, Maine; and Patricia (John) Larson, of Concord. She had 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Jerry participated in the lives of her children through Campfire Girls, by being one of the founding members of the Gehringer Park Swim Club of Concord and by driving them to and from band rehearsals and concerts, swim meets, and to the Sierra to camp and ski. Every year, the family would drive from Concord to Oak Harbor to visit with Jerry’s mother, Verrelle, on the family land on Whidbey Island. She and Bill took many trips to Hawaii, to Maui, their favorite island, and cruised several times to Alaska and in the Pacific. Jerry was involved with the Concord Garden Club for many years, was an editor of the California Music Educators magazine and was treasurer of the Gehringer Swim Club. Her ashes will be spread in San Francisco Bay in September 2015, and a memorial marker to her will be placed in the Pioneer Burial Cemetery of Oak Harbor that same month. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pioneer Burial Association, 355 N. Oak St., Oak Harbor, WA 98277.

The year in review: Top efforts highlight 2014 By JIM WALLER Sports editor

Strong individual performances and a record-setting team highlighted the local sports scene in 2014. First the individuals... Marti Malloy, a 2004 Oak Harbor High School graduate, continued to shine in the world of international judo. The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist won the Pan American championship in Ecuador in April and the Miami Pan American Open in August; she also placed second in the Tyumen Grand Slam in Russia in July. Joanna Leete wrapped up her award-filled Oak Harbor High School golf career in May, placing sixth in the state 3A tournament, the best finish ever for an OHHS female. She was a four-time state qualifier, three-time all-Wesco first-team selection and twotime league tournament and points champion. Leete also won two district titles, a first for a Wildcat. She set a school single-season record of 80.14 strokes per round. Leete also set a school single-round record with a 70, smashing the 39-year-old school record of 74. John Rodeheffer, another Oak Harbor High School athlete, finished his stellar cross country career by placing fourth in the state 3A meet in November, tying for the high-

est finish ever by a Wildcat by matching Gary Lineburg’s feat from 1965. Rodeheffer set a 3A course record while winning his second consecutive district title this fall. He also won two Wesco championships, was first-team all-league three times and qualified for state four times. He was fifth in this year’s BorderClash, featuring the best runners from all classifications in Washington and Oregon.

Coupeville stars At Coupeville, Ben Etzell was named the Cascade Conference’s Most Valuable Player in baseball. It was the first time a Coupeville athlete received the honor in any sport in the decade the Wolves competed in the league. Ironically it came in Coupeville’s final season in the conference. It took just one season for a Wolf to be named an MVP in the Olympic League. Josh Bayne earned the honor in football this fall in the Wolves’ initial season in their new conference. Etzell was also the MVP of the district baseball feeder game, earning a spot in the state all-star series where he played with Washington’s best seniors. And, finally, he was named to the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association

Carlton Johnson Jr. helped Oak Harbor win the state title.

first-team, all-state team for the combined classes of 1A, 2B and 1B schools. Now the team... Possibly the most impressive team performance of 2014 came from one of the most obscure teams, the Oak Harbor High School bowlers. Oak Harbor, coached by Jason Youngsman, won its fourth consecutive state championship in February, becoming the first high school in the United States to take its state title four years running, according to Youngsman. The Wildcats were so dominant, their Division II team, coached by Carlton Johnson, won its classification at state as well. And the rest... Below is the beginning of a month-to-month review of other highlights from 2014. The review will be completed in next Wednesday’s edition of the Whidbey News-Times.

January The Oak Harbor High School wrestlers, coached by Peter Esvelt, locked up their second straight Wesco North title by knocking off Everett 37-35 Jan. 28. The Wildcat swim team, coached by Alex Thierry, finished undefeated in Wesco North 3A action by thumping Everett 121-33 Jan.29.

February Oak Harbor senior Drew Washington scored 44 points in a 75-67 basketball loss to Marysville-Pilchuck Feb. 3. The point total was the second highest single-game effort in OHHS history. Pat McGreevey scored 49 points in 1953. The Oak Harbor girls wrestling team placed second out of 31 teams at the subregional meet Feb. 7 and 8, the best finish ever for the Wildcats. Jahleel Vester and Amber Cramsey-Behnke each placed third and Jeremy Vester was fourth in the state wrestling tournament Feb. 21 and 22. The Oak Harbor High School bowling team, in addition to taking the state crown, picked up top individual honors. Brendan McCardle in Division I and Taylor Osorio

Joanna Leete closed out her OHHS golf career by finishing sixth in the state tournament. in Division II won the Most Valuable Bowler awards. McCardle and Carlton Johnson Jr. made the Division I first-team, all-state team. Osorio, Logan Faught and Connor Parameter were first team in Division II. Oak Harbor’s Caley Powers placed 16th in the butterfly at the state 3A state swim meet.

March Winter prep athletes earning first-team, all-league honors for Oak Harbor were swimmers Caley Powers (four events), Micah Geist, Caleb Cabigting and Dakota Powers; and wrestlers Christian Bertram, Jeremy Vester, Jahleel Vester, Mark Johnston, Ray Quinday, Jackson Constant and Cramsey-Behnke. Coupeville basketball player Makana Stone was the Wolves’ lone first-team selection. Making history along the way, the host Oak Harbor

High School Junior Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps secured its second consecutive Northwest Drill and Rifle Conference championship at the regional finals March 15. The back-to-back titles is a first in the regional competition in the past 14 years, according to Oak Harbor’s Chief William Thiel. The North Whidbey Aquatic Club set five team records and Olivia Tungate claimed a gold medal at the Age Group Regional Championships March 20-24. Tungate won the 200-yard butterfly and set two team records; Patrick Caldwell set three NWAC records, including the 50 freestyle mark previously set in 1999; and Taliah Black, Jerrin-James Concepcion and Ashleigh Merrill also competed in the meet.

April Aaron Johnson (18th) and Jodi Brautaset (37th,

fifth among women) were to top Oak Harbor runners in the 13th annual Whidbey Marathon April 13. Etzell threw a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Lakewood April 14. Stone set a Coupeville High School record (60.27) in the 400 meters at King’s April 17; she would go on to reset the mark several times during the season. Mike Washington resigned after eight years as the Oak Harbor High School head boys basketball coach. He helped the Wildcats qualify for three consecutive district tournaments for the first time in 20 years. Washington later accepted the head coaching position at South Whidbey High School. The father-son team of Roger and Doug Pierce won Whidbey Golf Club Twoperson Best Ball Tournament April 26. See the Wednesday, Dec. 31, issue of the News-Times for the May-December highlights.

Aerial videography business lifts off Skinner brothers from Oak Harbor use drones to get impossible shots By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

As with any business pursuit, there are obstacles to overcome. For Oak Harbor brothers Paul and Justin Skinner, that obstacle was a span of steel weighing nearly 1,600 tons. Hovering high above Deception Pass Bridge and capturing spectacular footage with a cameraequipped drone proved to be no problem during a video shoot this summer. However, using remote control to direct the drone underneath the bridge, where the internet signal disappeared, didn’t turn out so well. The drone hovered in place for awhile, rose on its own then glanced off a steel truss, sending it spiraling into the swirling waters below. Their pride hurt but not broken, the Skinner brothers would return to succeed on another day. “We had to get the shot,” Paul Skinner said. “We went back and conquered our nemesis.” Paul and Justin Skinner are coowners of Vivid Aerial Ascent, a new Oak Harbor-based company that offers aerial video and photography for its customers. Launched this summer, the business caters to events such as festivals, weddings, sports contests, concerts and other occasions with possibilities growing as wide as the Skinners’ imaginations. The company recently was hired to provide aerial footage of properties for a large Seattle-based real estate firm. “We are basically a flying camera,” Paul Skinner said. Getting their business off the ground didn’t come without careful research, an understanding of legalities and attention to rules. The Skinners needed to navigate through the gray legal areas regarding drone usage and the stigmas attached to the devices themselves. “The term ‘drone’ has gotten a different kind of popularity over the past year,” Paul said. “We drop the word when necessary. Some people have strong opinions about the word drone. They think of military spying and that sort of stuff.” Flying unmanned aircraft for recreational use is allowed by the Federal Aviation Administration as long as it follows prescribed weight (less than 55 pounds) and safety

Justin Skinner at the controls of a quadrocopter. rules. However, the FAA doesn’t

endorse commercial usage and has been ordered by Congress to issue national rules legalizing drones for such purposes by September of 2015. The rules are expected to be revealed early in the year as the FAA projects 10,000 such devices in the U.S. skies by 2017. The Skinners, whose father is a prominent Oak Harbor attorney, believe their business model to be unique and compliant. “We are not charging for the service of flying,” Paul said. “We’re charging for content.” “We charge for our video and photo-editing services,” Justin said. “We prefer the word cinematography. Video can pertain to home video of a family celebrating a birthday. Cinematography is geared more toward professional video production.” Paul, 36, and Justin, 31, are both Oak Harbor High School graduates who tinkered with remote-control devices during their youth.

The idea of launching a business that would provide unique vantage points from the sky came to Paul after watching a motocross event a year ago. “I took my passion for media and wanted to get into a new emerging field,” said Paul, who earned a degree in multi-media at the Seattle Art Institute. The brothers own two drones, which are also called unmanned aerial vehicles or UAV’s. They are the same model quadrocopter, a DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus, which features four rotating blades and an integrated, 1,080-pixel highdefinition video camera. They weigh less than 5 pounds and cost about $1,500 apiece. The Skinners have ordered a yetto-be released 4,000-pixel, higherdefinition model. “It hasn’t quite hit the market yet,” Justin said. “We really see the market headed that way.” The Skinners have demonstrated their drones at several public events

NOTICE Washington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (receipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d b u y e r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quantity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the delivery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a c o r d by v i s u a l i z i n g a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet. Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension.
