s 2014 comes to a close the Courier-Herald looks back at some of the top stories of the year. A year in a newspaper documents the highs and lows, dreams realized and tragedy found; it is the stories of the many people who make up a community.

10. Travis Martin Lear sentenced to 25 years

Travis Martin Lear was sentenced in September to 25 years in prison for first-degree child molestation. The verdict was announced in King County Superior Court by Judge Chad Allred. The 26-year-old Enumclaw resident molested an 11-yearold girl in the bathroom of the Enumclaw Library the afternoon of Jan. 30, 2013. Lear had twice been convicted of sex crimes prior to the incident at the library. He was also registered as a level 1 sex offender. According to court documents, Lear was sentenced to 300 months (25 years) and maximum of life. The court also sentenced him to community custody for life. Lear was ordered to pay restitution, an amount to be set by the court following a hearing. He was also ordered to pay $1,495.81 in attorney fees and $230 in court costs.

9. KC Moulden repeats KC Moulden took her second gold medal at the Mat Classic wrestling championships Feb. 22 at the Tacoma Dome. Moulden pinned Shanelle Berry from Yelm in 54 seconds,

and she pinned every opponent she faced during the two-day tournament. “I wanted to go hard, not make any mistakes and get it done fast,” Moulden said of her championship match. “It’s good to know I can defend my title.” “She’s an outstanding kid. She’s a leader on the team and at school,” said her coach, Jerry Scheidt. Moulden was 25-1 on the season and was first in subdistricts, regionals and state.

8. Spring Sports Titles • Track and Field Moulden won the gold in the

shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 0.25 inches. She took sixth in the discus at 125-01. Maria Blad took the state crown in the 100-meters hurdles in 14.83 and sixth in the 300 hurdles in 46.94. • Fastpitch The Enumclaw Hornets fastpitch team finished an incredible season May 31 taking second in the 3A state tournament at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey. The Hornets ended the season 28-1 overall and 15-0 in 3A South Puget Sound League. The girls were league and district champions. The only loss came in the battle for the title against Kamiakin from Kennewick with the Hornets losing 4-2. It was the third consecutive state title for the Braves.

7. Two friends die in Buckley plane crash

Rod Richardson and Jim Cawley shared many things – friendship, former careers, a love of flying and even a neighborhood. The two retired commercial pilots perished the afternoon of June 4 when the small, vintage airplane they were flying went down in a wooded area not far from their rural Buckley homes.

Each man lived along an airstrip that straddles 112th Street, a neighborhood of small-aircraft enthusiasts. Cawley had recently purchased a vintage military airplane from his friend and the two had gone for a flight that Wednesday morning. When they returned to the sky that afternoon, it was immediately clear something was wrong. Area residents reported hearing the engine sputtering and losing altitude before it clipped treetops and crashed. The plane went down in a wooded area north of state Route 410, in the 9200 block of 258th Avenue East. The wreckage was removed the following day.

6. Buckley toddler dies in tragic accident

It was shortly before 3 p.m. April 14 when a white pickup left state Route 410, banged through a ditch and traveled perhaps 500 feet over grass and along the

Citizens attempted to revive the child, who was transported to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and was later pronounced dead.

The semi-sleepy burg of Buckley might suffer from a too-quiet downtown, but now, it also is among just a handful of towns where marijuana fans can flock to purchase their drug of choice, whether it be Pineapple Express, Lemon Skunk, Big Bud or any other item off the recreational menu. With the opening of Mr. Bills of Buckley, the town of slightly more than 4,000 folks is the only Pierce County community – other than Tacoma – where marijuana can legally be purchased. Smokers cannot buy legal weed in Pierce County’s secondlargest city, Lakewood, or No. 3 Puyallup. Likewise, Buckley’s nearest neighbors have put the kibosh on anyone attempting to ply the marijuana trade made legal via passage of Initiative 502. Just to the north in Enumclaw, the Planning Commission and City Council have recognized that marijuana exists but used zoning codes to prevent the growing, processing or selling of the plant. To the west in Bonney Lake, city leaders maintain a prohibition on any phase of the marijuana trade. The Green Door, opened later giving

Buckley two marijuana stores.

4 . The Big November Wind

An eastern wind sailed down the west face of the Cascades Nov. 11, slamming into Enumclaw and the surrounding area while knocking down trees, power lines, fences and anything not nailed or weighted down. Enumclaw had sustained winds in the 40s with gusts hitting more than 60 mph, uprooting trees and sending roof shingles sailing. The National Weather Service logged wind gusts at SeaTac of 43 mph with sustained winds of 30 mph. At about 10 p.m. Nov. 11 a Douglas fir crashed down across state Route 169 between 400th Street and 424th Street. The tree took out power lines and telephone poles on both sides of the road. SR 169 was closed until Nov. 14 while Puget Sound Energy workers repaired the damaged lines and power poles.

3. Gas and Money

The cities of Enumclaw and Buckley squared off over money related to the natural gas system serving both communities. There was some heated council meetings and plenty of complex engineering data, municipal mathematical methodologies and legal legwork. As Kevin Hanson wrote May 21 edition of the Courier-Herald: Eventually, money talks. And $100,000 made the ongoing troubles disappear. The history between the two towns that straddle the White River might be one of mutual agreement, but it seemed there was no middle ground when it came to the recent fracas. Enumclaw claimed it

White River girls strong showing at tournament The White River High girls finished fourth at the Dec. 20 “Pride of Lady Lions” wrestling tournament in Lynden. After finishing fifth a week earlier, “we were looking to keep improving and did just that,” coach Rich Valdez said. “We asked them to best their efforts from the previous week and they responded with a strong showing,” the coach said. “Our veterans put the team on their backs and fought their way to the finals.” Hannah Lewandowski took home a champi-

onship and Erin Redford and Kendra Blue were placed second in Lynden. “We got valuable team points by pinning our opponents when we had the opportunity,” Valdez said. “The whole squad wrestled with an urgency and awareness of needing the bonus points.” He credited the team’s positive attitude to senior captains Lewandowski and Blue, along with Redford who “is also really stepping up and becoming a vocal team leader and helping set the tone for us this season.”

The squad received a bit of a break during the first week of school vacation, with a series of team bonding/building events. “It’s a tough season with a lot of early mornings and long travel that spans some major holidays,” Valdez said, “and we like to promote a family atmosphere for our wrestlers and their families.” Once the season resumes, White River’s girls will be chasing top competition by heading to tournaments in Sedro Woolley, Kelso and Othello, all in January.

Clam digging begins today The best digging typically occurs one to two hours before low tide, said Ayres, noting that digging is not allowed at any beach before noon. “With afternoon low tides in their favor, diggers can hit the beach in the daylight and still have plenty of time to clean and cook their clams for a New Year’s meal,” he said. Letters Terror threats Inslee not sticking to keep me reeling his campaign promises My family doesn’t do the stereotypical Chinese food dinner on Christmas. Oh no. Instead, we Jews open our gifts from Santa-day and race over for a matinee movie. It’s Mandel/Altman family tradition. Always has been. Thus, while I appreciate President Obama’s recommendation to “go to the movies” in light of the Sony studios hack and subsequent threats against theaters potentially showing “The Interview,” I didn’t need his help with the decision. We are in My memory of Christmas Day movies with the famEric Mandel ily starts with the Reporter original “Dumb and Dumber” and flips through a menagerie of other cinematic adventures: “Titanic,” “As Good as it Gets,” “Gangs of New York” (we like Leo), at least one of the “Hunger Games” flicks, “Walk Hard,” “Django Unchained” and “Anchorman 2,” to name a few. Whether my parents/sisters/cousins and I would have picked “The Interview” as our movie du jour this Dec. 25 is another question entirely. The controversial film, which is the supposed instigator of the hacks allegedly

LAST WEEK: Will the world be a more peaceful place, with less armed conflict, in 2015?

Last week Rich Elfers’ column “Careful with those promises” was timely not only as a personal point but as a political one, too. Democrat Gov. Inslee would do well to read the column and take it to heart. Two years ago in the Olympia Journal Inslee emphatically stated he was “sticking to his guns” that “new taxes won’t fix Washington’s budget woes.” Oops – is that one of those broken promises to which Elfers referred? The governor continued declaring school funding would be increased by generating more state revenue through economic growth without raising taxes. Furthermore,

his campaign plan supposedly called for “reforms in business and occupation taxes, plus tax breaks for fledgling companies...and cutting some regulations.” In the governor’s mind evidently the imposition of a heavyhanded carbon tax and increased regulations on businesses still meets the litmus test of his promises, how so?. (Rob McKenna proved prophetic when he repeatedly warned us that Democrat Inslee would raise the taxes.) With the present fuel prices lower, the state gas tax is still at 55 cents a gallon/diesel at 61 cents – eighth highest in the nation. More people will travel to see relatives for the holidays and throughout the year so Washington will make more fuel dollars to fix the crumbling infra structure; unless it is siphoned off for pet government projects. Also, how much money has

California eco-billionaire Tom Steyer funneled into the governor’s green agenda? Perhaps their goal is to make Washington equal to California...spare us! As well, why is Inslee reluctant to have his carbon plan voted on by the Legislature? Instead he wants to pull an executive order like his mentor Obama. Elfers’ column concluded that “broken promises cause any person in authority...to lose credibility...” and “...once credibility is lost, it’s very difficult to regain.” Leave us not forget that former President George H. W. Bush’s infamous “No new taxes” pledge resulted in one term and pass it forward to Gov. Inslee before he can decimate Washington businesses. Work for term limits! George Terhaar Enumclaw

Cuba: The end of a bad 54-year policy

A

s a teen, I remember well the victory of Fidel Castro and his band of guerrillas against the corrupt dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. A speaker spoke at my parents’ church condemning U.S. sponsored corruption and greed in Cuba under Batista. That was one of my first introductions to seeing the complexity of international affairs. Then came the panic brought about by the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and the rush by Americans to their grocery stores to frantically buy toilet paper and canned goods for the expected nuclear war that might follow the showdown. Premier Khrushchev and President Kennedy were standing toe-to-toe over Russian missiles in Communist Cuba and the world would live or die as a result. The years that followed Castro’s takeover saw the U.S. embargo against Cuba. As I began teaching high school history and current events, I had a chance to examine the Cuban issue more closely. I saw that Castro was able to rally support and stay in power by using the “Colossus of the North” as the boogeyman. U.S. policy to Cuba has been wrong for fifty-four years, and thanks to a lame duck President, that policy is on its deathbed. The best way to deal with Castro would have been for the U.S. to keep quiet and to continue to trade with Cuba. Americans would continue to

In Focus Rich Elfers Columnist

travel there, and Castro would not have had anger against the U.S. to rally support for his regime. Then the Cuban people would have begun to see Castro for what he really was. Had the U.S. followed this policy fifty-four years ago, Castro and Communism in Cuba would have disappeared decades ago. Then why did the U.S. maintain the embargo for 54 years if it was counterproductive? The answer, as ever, was, “politics”. Most of the rich Cubans who fled Castro’s takeover ended up in Florida. They formed a major voting block that might doom any aspiring presidential candidate from winning the presidency. It took President Obama, frustrated with his inability to do much domestically to open up negotiations with Fidel’s brother, Raul Castro, Cuba’s current leader. Russia is no longer able to support Cuba as it did during the Cold War, and the strongly anti-American Venezuelan President Chavez died. The Venezuelan government has provided cheap oil for years, propping up the weak and broken Cuban economy.

Now, as the price of gasoline has drastically dropped, oil-producing Venezuela lacks the ability to supply oil to Cuba as it once did. Its own economy is in shambles. Castro has only the U.S. to turn to bail out their economy with increased trade and tourism. Thanks to Communism in Cuba, the Cuban people are now better educated than they were fifty-four years ago. All they need now is a more open government and a more capitalistic economy to harness these increased educational abilities to prosper Cuba. President Obama has done future presidents a favor regarding Florida. They no longer have to fear a CubanAmerican voter backlash by opening up relations with Cuba. This new policy will put the United States in a better light in Latin America, and win us some friends who now see that we are acting rationally instead of following a failed foreign policy. I’ve waited a long time to see the U.S. government finally end Cuba’s isolation. This change in policy holds a lesson for all of us: Decisions made in a time of fear are usually bad decisions. We all make better choices when we can rid ourselves of our fears and look at issues clearly and rationally. The definition of insanity is to repeat behaviors in hopes of different results. We followed that insane policy for 54 years. The U.S. government has just become saner. It’s about time.

Even if the movie hadn’t been cancelled around the country, I’d still probably be leaning toward “Birdman” — I love me some good Michael Keaton. No matter the ultimately decided upon movie, it’s disappointing to see American cinemas hijacked. I’ve long worried that terrorists would wise up to our culture’s biggest fear of attack – our leisure time: sporting events, public parks, bars, malls, theaters, etc. James Holmes’ massacre in Aurora, Colo. during “The Dark Night Rises” certainly put society on notice, but the general

I’d bet these cyber hackers couldn’t believe the browbeating tactic actually worked. With that said, I understand the concerns. The cyber oppressors proved their seriousness with the debilitating hack and ominous threat to the public’s well-being. The group made references to the 9/11 attacks and warned neighbors of theaters showing the film “you’d better leave.” I can sympathize with the ensuing “it’s just not worth it” fear of the average moviegoer. It reminds me of the Ebola panic that’s also

A number of you enlightened me about a local, AfricanAmerican family (the Kirk family) whose teenage daughter was elected homecoming queen and student body president, class of 1959, and her brother, class of 1961, who was a homecoming prince and a major jock. Undoubtedly, many of you have exciting plans for New Year’s Eve. Whatever they might be, I hope you have a special someone to share a kiss with when the shade opens on 2015. Happy New Year.

A couple of weeks later Ted and Mary Fehr filed a complaint in King County Superior Court against fire commissioners Angie Stubblefield and Stan McCall alleging violations of the state’s Open Public Meetings Act. Doug Dawson was hired as interim fire chief and the last half of the year has been quieter.

they’re running out of time. In short, time would appear to be relative, depending on your age. On a concrete, emotional level, this is what Einstein scribbled out in his equations. Of course, he was speaking in abstract, theoretical spheres of galaxies, black holes and the speed of light, but in a personal, existential sense, this is precisely what he meant. So, here we are again. Bring on the revelry, streamers and noise makers, and pop the champaign corks. As is my custom in end-of-the-year columns, I’ll extend my annual apologies to anyone I might have insulted. On occasion, I might stretch a historical fact or two for the

when it can be run a month from now with likely twice the fanfare (people yearn for what they can’t have). But, just because it is an understandable fear, does not make it worthwhile or truly justifiable. So, as I write this column prior to our early deadline, I pledge to be at a movie, doing my part for the economy as a Jewish American on Christmas Day. I’ll

Joan Cecilia (Turner) Kennedy Nov 1, 1924 - Dec 5, 2014

Joan Cecilia Turner was born in Sheridan, WY to Charles and Ellen (Splain) Turner. Moved to Anacortes, WA in 1926. Through the Depression and WWII, she managed to have a happy childhood with her devoted “Mother and Daddy” and 4 siblings. She was shy, athletic, beautiful and sweetly naive. After graduating H.S. in 1943, Joan worked at Anacortes J.H. until 1950, then moved to Seattle to work for Superior School Photos. Glamorous big-city Aunty Jo stayed close with her family. In 1960 she married Patrick Kennedy, who worked at Superior. They moved to Seattle’s Pinehurst area and had 3 children: Brian (’61), Kimberly (’62), and Shawn (‘66). In 1973 they moved to Enumclaw for Pat’s job (Farwest Garments). Following Pat’s 1977 back injury, Joan took on a Seattle janitorial contract, commuting nightly for several years so the family could keep living in Enumclaw. In 1982-3 Joan, Pat, and Shawn moved to Puyallup to manage a motel/ apartment. Kim and son Tyson lived nearby. In 1989, Joan and Pat moved to Whidbey Island near Bush Point. Pat passed away there in 1997, and in 2000 Joan moved back to Enumclaw to be near Kim’s family. Joan was a fiercely loyal and caring mother, working extremely hard to support and provide. She was a great role model and friend. She loved to laugh, loved to sing. She loved being Bomma, Hammy, and GG to her grandkids and great-grandkids. Joan could find great pleasure in the little things so easily overlooked. She was delighted by almost anything the color blue. She loved a perfectly made cup of tea. Joan had amazing support and care from her family, allowing her to live independently until last year. For the final 3 months of Joan’s life, Kim, as she had promised Mom long ago, took her “home” to Whidbey’s Bush Point for a stretch of sunny fall days on the deck looking out at the water. Along with Hospice, neighbors Connie and Bill were an amazing support for Kim, as they had been for us with Dad 17 years ago. Preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings Charles (died an infant), Bill, Barth, Patricia Jewell, and Jack. Survived by her 3 children and their loving partners: Brian & Tammie, Kimberly & Paul, Shawn & Tami. Kim’s son Tyson, wife Lesa, their children Taylor, Drew, and Kennedy. Shawn’s son Wyatt and stepsons Isaac and Cameron. Kim’s stepdaughter Brandee and her family, Joan’s sisters-in-law Charalene, Marge, Marina, brother-in-law Stan. Many nieces, nephews and their families, both Turner and Kennedy. Joan is to be interred at Grand View Cemetery in Anacortes, WA. A memorial ceremony will be announced at a later date.

treasures to bless other people was exactly what Christmas is supposed to be about. Maybe that is the heart of the matter. “Maybe it’s supposed to leave us a bit physically and emotionally drained. If we are attempting to imitate his giving how could it be any other way? Maybe it’s only our reaction to being sacrificial that is the problem. Maybe,” yes I know I’ve used that word a lot but forgive me, “maybe rather than being glad it’s over we should be glad we were able to do it. The Bible says that we should not grow weary in doing good.” I was probably being obtuse again but I couldn’t help myself. “Were people blessed by your giving of yourself; of your spending your treasures and time and maybe even having egg nog with them? They were. You know they were. Anytime we give of ourselves it’s going to cost us but it is a blessing to those who receive.” “Hmm,” she said. “ I guess I’ll rest a bit and start planning for next year, seeing as Christmas is not really over.” God’s blessings dear reader. See you in church.

what caustically. It was becoming obvious to me that the “hap-haphappiest season of all” had taken a toll on her. “Maybe you’re doing it wrong,” I said, treading where angels would fear to go. “But then again, maybe not. Maybe you are doing it just right, maybe it’s supposed to be challenging and demanding. Maybe sacrificing for the people you love is what Christmas is supposed to be.” “What? You know your sermons confuse me sometimes, but you’re coming off the tracks now. I’d have thought you’d think Christmas was all light and blessing.” Her eyes had fire in them and there were little bits of froth at the corner of her mouth. “No, really.” I was trying to be conciliatory; honestly. “If you think about it, Christmas wasn’t easy for God, either. His coming to earth in human form was all about sacrificially giving himself for people; us specifically. And expensive; you talk about spending some money as if you gave it all. Which, by the way, is exactly what he did. Maybe, just maybe, your giving up your valuable time and your
