Marijuana myths, facts get review With the passage of I-502 in 2012, development of marijuana legislation and marijuana research has surged to unprecedented levels. In an attempt to clearly translate new laws and research, the Reporter and Courier-Herald are examining these issues in a series of articles spanning the next few weeks. Part one of this series – published Jan. 28 – addressed the issue of previous criminal convictions for possession of marijuana. Today’s article addresses one of crucial issues surrounding marijuana – is it addictive?

Think back to high school health class. You may have seen the old propaganda film “Reefer Madness,” originally released in 1938, though it was revived and brought back to schools in the 1970s. Sparing the plot details of the film, it paints marijuana as “the new drug menace which is destroying the youth of America in
Glacier Middle School students walked to the White River Friday, releasing young salmon into a peaceful stretch of water where a small creek spills into the fast-flowing river. Students in Joe Frame’s GMS classroom had raised the salmon as part of a lesson about ecosystems and protecting natural habitat. At the river, students were assisted by volunteers from Citizens for a Healthy Bay, a nonprofit group that works to enhance Tacoma’s Commencement Bay and other regional waters. Students were quizzed about the riverside habitat – Was it a good place to release the salmon? Was it a likely spot for them to return for spawning? – and they tested the water for both temperature and ph level. At left, students release their young fish. Photo by Kevin Hanson

alarmingly increasing numbers.” The film claims marijuana is a violent and soul destroying narcotic which leads to “acts of shocking violence, ending often in incurable insanity.” You’ve probably heard the opposite claims, if you’ve ever been to Seattle’s Hempfest. Uncle charged in child’s assault By Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer
Darren James Pendergast was charged Jan. 28 by the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office with assault of a child in the second degree for an incident that occurred Jan. 25, near Carbonado. Second degree assault of a child is a class B felony. Pierce County deputies spoke with the victim, who is Pendergast’s 3-year-old niece, and her mother. The niece had a swollen and bruised eye, split lower lip and scratches on her arm. Court documents state the girl was

transported to a nearby hospital and was later diagnosed with a fractured orbital socket and damage to her liver and kidney. She was then transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Prior to the deputies arriving, Pendergast had left the residence. The victim’s mother told police while she and her sister, Pendergast’s wife, were out, Pendergast took the girl and his 6-year-old son for a walk in the woods. When the mother realized he had taken the children, she and Pendergast’s wife went looking. Two hours later, according to the

documents, Pendergast returned home with the children. The girl was wet and muddy and he was carrying her wrapped in his sweatshirt. Pendergast said the girl had fallen into a mud puddle and he carried her home. While speaking with Pendergast’s wife, according to the documents, she told deputies “she had a really bad feeling” when she learned he had taken the children. Pendergast’s wife told deputies a few weeks earlier, she noticed a bruise on her 2-year-old’s cheek after Pendergast had been watching him. A day following Pendergast’s arrest, his son was interviewed about
what happened while on the walk in the woods. The son said his dad pushed the girl down in the mud, picked her up and threw her down again. He then said Pendergast pushed her down in a mud puddle and pinned her “like in a wrestling match” with her head face down in the water. When the girl tried to lift her head out of the water, the son said Pendergast kept her head down in the water “for a bit.” The son told investigators, Pendergast eventually picked the girl up and laid her down on the trail but she was too tired to moved. That, the son said, is when Pendergast picked her up and started carrying her home. Pendergast’s bail has been set at $400,000.

cures anxiety, depression and even cancer are thrown around like joints from a bucket, which is a common occurrence at 4:20 p.m. While many people are just there for the festival, marijuana advocates occasionally monologue about how being high doesn’t affect their ability to drive or operate heavy machinery and that they shouldn’t have to go to court for their DUI citation. While most people tend to gravitate toward the center of the marijuana issue and away from the extreme ends, propaganda and misinformation about marijuana is still more easily accessible than trustworthy scientific research. And with I-502 passing into law only two years ago, many questions about the long-term health effects of marijuana go unanswered and are subject to old biases and new assumptions from both sides of the debate. So which facts are solid, and which are just smoke?
dependent on the drug. Chances for addiction become higher the earlier marijuana is introduced. About 17 percent of teenage users, or 1-in-6, are estimated to become dependent on the drug. Additionally, 25 to 50 percent of those who are heavy users and smoke marijuana every day can become addicted. The National Institute of Drug Abuse cited the 2013 National Survey of Drug Use and Health, which estimated marijuana accounted for 4.2 million of the estimated 6.9 million Americans dependent on or abusing illicit drugs. Symptoms of marijuana dependance include sleeplessness, irritability, decreased appetite or cravings and various forms of physical discomfort. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, symptoms can last for up to two weeks. “Researchers do not yet know the full extent of the consequences when the

Dillon’s tugboat dream is chugging along By Marina Graham For The Courier-Herald
The phrase “I have a dream” resonates with us. We can be filled with an inexpressible hope which leads to a reality of either success or, well, a “crash and burn” on the other. Dreams give us something to look forward to, a goal to reach, and can even be downright inspiring. My brother, Dillon, has a dream, but he has something that hinders him from bringing that dream to life. Autism. This brain disorder has made it so he cannot manage an independent life for himself, though he has a hope of one day being fixed. You see, Dillon wants to become a tugboat captain. He spends inordinate amounts of time (at least from my perspective) reading about machines and boats and the way things work, so it is only natural that he would want to pursue something related to those fields. But a captain of a tugboat? Perhaps that is somewhat a lofty goal for one challenged as he is, but then, we all have something that stands in our way from pursuing our passions. The question is, will it be allowed to stop you from reaching for your dream? My family believes Dillon’s hopes are important, so my dad decided to support my brother as he reached for his dream. He began by looking up plans for building a mini wooden tugboat, but as he researched, numerous obstacles began to surface. Building this boat could take years and would require large sums of money. We didn’t want to give up, but perhaps this dream would not be feasible after all.
Plans are coming together to allow Dillon Graham to captain his own tugboat. Contributed photo We began to share the story with others, resulting in Dillon’s own website where friends could donate to his dream. This was an unexpected delight to allow him to read what others said to encourage him onward and he, with my dad’s help, could respond back. But even then we couldn’t see this coming together anytime soon. Then my dad saw a real mini tugboat for sale in Oregon – not what we had in mind, but maybe it would work. Maybe Dillon’s dream could still come true.
When my dad decided to buy the tug, he didn’t tell Dillon he was bringing it home and it was a complete surprise when Dillon walked out the back door. My brother does not show excitement in the ordinary ways such as I do, jumping and yelling and racing around like a chicken with her head chopped off. No, he just begins to talk. And talk. And talk. And before you know it, you have been informed on exactly how the two silver smokestacks that emerge from the tug are attached, how they function and why they are the best things ever. The tug has been christened “Heart Strings” in honor of the fact that Dillon, and Dillon’s dream, tug on my dad’s heartstrings. Our little Heart Strings is a 16-foot log pusher built in 1956 and was actually used in the lumber industry for transporting logs down waterways. The classic boat colors of black and rust decorate its hull, and it is powered by a gas motor that my brother would be delightedly eager to explain to you in detail should you happen to ask him about it. This sturdy tug still needs some modification, but Dillon has already adopted his role as captain with ease, and the boat hasn’t even been on the water. One rainy day a couple of weeks ago, Dillon looked outside and saw that the boat was getting wet. His wheels began to turn. Wet plus metal equals rust. Rust equals bad for tugboat. Therefore, the boat must be wiped down. With this in mind, Dillon turned to my dad. “Are you going to swab the deck or what?” he said, in complete seriousness.
Ah, the fine art of delegation. Needless to say, my dad wasn’t terribly keen on that proposition, but still, we got a good laugh out of it. My family has been encouraged throughout this ongoing journey, both by those that see Dillon regularly and by people who have followed his story on Facebook. We are very grateful to those people, and it is with their help that we continue to move forward with Heart Strings’ repairs. Dillon’s story is not without struggle, as autism will continue to be an obstacle to overcome the rest of his life, but he has not let it stop him from having dreams and achieving his goals with support in place! His dream to be a tugboat captain is becoming a reality – Heart Strings is a real tugboat and Dillon will be the real captain. He will be able to operate the boat himself, with dad just standing by and enjoying the ride, with the occasional swabbing of the deck. With the help of family, friends and people who believe dreams are worth pursuing, Dillon comes closer and closer to putting that tug on the ocean and finally being able to go tugging on Heart Strings. To learn more about Dillon’s dream, visit his website: http://www.grahamalive.com/ Tug.html Donations are taken through: gofundme. com/heartstringstug. This article was provided by 15-year-old Marina Graham, Dillon’s younger sister. She has a passion for creative writing and drawing dragons.

Last week I wrote a story for the Journal of San Juan Islands and I think I finally found some fans. I wrote about a UFO sighting in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. It’s the first UFO story I have ever written and, amazingly, no one is calling demanding I be replaced with a well-dressed mannequin draped in apparent hair. I received a call from Jim Dunn late in the day on Jan. 19, while I was sending pages for the Journal. He told me he had a story he wanted to discuss. I told him I was sweating a deadline and asked if we could talk the next day. There was something about the conversation that Dennis Box interested me and I Editor hoped he would call. Fortunately, Dunn called back the next day. At first I thought he wanted to talk about a problem in his neighborhood or with some goofball city rule. It took me a moment to get it through my thick fog that he was talking about a UFO sighting. Dunn said on Jan. 15 at about 6:15 p.m. he saw three orange lights over the main street of Friday Harbor – Spring Street. He thought at first it was a plane making a very low approach to land at the town’s airport, which he thought was odd. Next he assumed the lights must be a helicopter or a drone, but there was something weird about the movements. “It was three orange lights moving independently,” Dunn said. “At first I rationalized it was a drone, but they were moving too rapidly.” Once I finally realized this was a different kind of story, I had to decide if Dunn was a regular guy, not a wacko like me. He came to the office in Friday Harbor and we spent some time talking. He was a very sensible, intelligent man. Dunn is a retired architect and private pilot, which meant he had a pretty good understanding of the way an aircraft would approach the airport. That is when the story got interesting. Dunn had contacted air traffic control at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The controller told Dunn there was a helicopter listed as being in the area, but it was 45 minutes after the sighting, Dunn said. Dunn contacted Peter Davenport, director of the National UFO Reporting Center who suggested he contact the local media (that’s me) to see if anyone else saw the light. After The Journal published the story several people sent emails about the same lights. Now, I have to admit this is just plain fun. Few stories I do can be described in that manner. The intriguing part of the news business is I never know
LAST WEEK: In light of recent developments, should all police officers wear body cameras?
I would like to comment on Rep. Hurst’s article (Courier-Herald, Jan. 21) in regards to lobbyist’s wining and dining politicians. There is one correction I would like to make and that is reference to our type of government. Five times he makes use of the word “democracy” and a democracy is one of the worst forms of government. Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution or the constitution of the 50 states is democracy used. The founders that gave us our form of government knew the difference between a republic and a democracy. A democracy is rule by majority and a republic is rule by law (constitution). They don’t teach the difference in schools and most politicians, teachers and lawyers do not seem to know the difference. The Constitution –
Article 4, Section 4 – guarantees a “republican form of government.” When Ben Franklin came out of the convention he was asked, “What have you given us, Mr. Franklin?” “A republic, ma’am, if you can keep it.” A lynch mob is a democracy – majority rules. I suggest people research the difference. Bill Young Enumclaw
Column mirrored recent Islamic propaganda Congratulations, Mr. Elfers. Your article (Courier-Herald, Jan. 28) is in the best tradition of modern Islamic propaganda (worthy of a run of the CAIR website) and while fresh to the Plateau, it sounds rather stale on the national and world stage. Let’s see, exercise of Western freedoms that we value offend Muslims; therefore, some of these freedoms should be restricted – or else we get what we deserve (it’s our fault). But
which freedoms and, more importantly, who decides? The answer is, emphatically, not the one’s doing the threatening. The truth is, various groups are routinely offended and “gee, look, no body parts.” One wonders about the atrocities committed by Muslims in Nigeria, Sudan, Philippines, India, etc. (the list is very long). What freedoms did their victims abuse? Another congratulations is in order, Mr. Elfers, on your equating French and German reaction to their demanding Muslim population to the reaction of Islamic extremists. Nice touch, but there’s a big difference between wanting someone to assimilate and killing someone if they won’t capitulate. In closing, I say good job, you have certainly obtained dhimmi status for your effort. In closing, many things said and written about Jesus, Christians find offensive, yet the response is remarkably different. Tom Woodward Bonney Lake
Do smaller classes really help? How big should your child’s class size be? According to State Initiative 1351, which barely passed recently, smaller is better. It seems to be common sense: the fewer the children, the easier it is for teachers to do their jobs. Fewer students mean fewer disruptions and more teacher contact time. But is this assumption really backed by facts? Not according to Malcolm Gladwell in his recent book, “David and Goliath.” His assertions have created a controversy in academia. Gladwell, also author of popular books such as “The Tipping Point,” “Blink” and “Outlier,” states: “A smaller classroom only translates to a better outcome if teachers change their teaching style when given a lower workload. Evidence suggests that teachers don’t necessarily do that.” Having taught high school level social studies now for nearly 40 years, I find his argument provocative. I taught classes with numbers as high as 32 and as low as seven. I believe there is truth to his assertions. Gladwell argues having many students makes the job of teaching more difficult in terms of discipline and papers to correct. That is true. Having few students means fewer discipline issues and less work outside the classroom. That’s also true. Gladwell asserts there is a sweet spot between too many and too few students. My experience in teaching high school students found the ideal size to be between 24 and 26 students per

class. There is certainly a tipping point in terms of class dynamics when that magic number is passed in American schools. Maintaining order and focus is more difficult with an extra two or three more. I have found that smaller class sizes lose a certain dynamic in discussions. There are not as many differences in opinion and since fewer students are there to support a quieter student’s views, there is less chance that student will speak up. A quiet student needs greater numbers to give them confidence to know that their views have validity. Larger class sizes have a different dynamic during discussions. The more students in class, the more opinions and attitudes are likely to vary. There is more likelihood that student comments and perceptions will create sparks. Those who favor smaller class sizes point to elite schools where numbers range between 10 and 12. Gladwell counters this argument by stating: “Wealthy people, and wealthy institutions, and wealthy nations – all
Goliaths – too often fall into (error): the school assumes that the kind of things that wealth can buy all translate into real world advantages.” Just because the rich can afford to send their children to private schools does not automatically mean students will be getting a better education. These are assumptions that may not bear the light of critical analysis. There are other factors that we in America often are not aware of. I’ve visited high schools in Japan where the average class size is closer to 40. Teachers seem to be able to maintain order because the culture is different. There is respect for teachers in the culture because of the influence of Confucianism. I currently teach classes in high school completion at a nearby college with mainly international (Asian) students. Maintaining order is not even much of an issue there. Of course, correcting papers with larger class sizes remains the same, with the additional burden that English is their second language. Whatever the answer to the right class size, Gladwell stirred up a lot of controversy. The passing of Initiative 1351 in this state needs to have its assumptions carefully researched. Smaller class sizes mean greater cost to the taxpayers of the state. The question that has not been answered is whether that unfunded mandate will give us the bang for the buck the majority hoped for.

Non-surgical solution can end the pain of trigeminal neuralgia. For more than a decade, the pain of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) kept Sharon silent. "I was afraid to talk, eat or chew gum," she said. "Everyone just thought I was a quiet person, but the pain was like plugging in an electrical cord and placing it under my tongue. It was unbearable." Sharon sought help and experienced relief with Gamma Knife treatment at South Sound Gamma Knife at St. Joseph in Tacoma. That was in 2010, and Sharon has been pain-free ever since. Sharon says, "I can talk again. I can chew gum. It's like the pain never happened." Gamma Knife "radiosurgery" is a single-session treatment that delivers pinpoint energy to the nerve to disrupt pain signals, offering significant to complete relief of symptoms. Gamma Knife also treats other disorders of the brain, from essential tremor to tumors. If you think you may have TN, see a neurologist. Today’s News...Today & Every Day!
All New at: www.courierherald.com
So, in the middle of my people watching, a voice clearly said to me, “I love every one of you.” You can imagine how I felt. Who am I to criticize others? Scripture tells us that we are all created in the image of God. “The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life” Job 33:4. To expand upon this a bit more, I found a meditation in the “Upper Room,” a daily devotional book that reinforces these ideas. In that meditation, the author inserted a Thought For The Day. It reads, “Every single person on the earth was created in the image of God.” Notice the verse does not say some people and not others, it says every single person. In that meditation, the author told about a potter who had discarded some of his less-than-perfect pots. As time went on his pottery became refined and very much sought after. Nearly 100 years later, his discarded pots were found in the dirt. Although they had some cracks in them, they were now very valuable because of who had made them. Here is a quote from this devotional: “The story of these pots reminds me of the nature of God’s children. We are all misshapen in some way. But each of us is made in the image of God, our creator. As with the crocks, our worth does not come from how we look or how functional we are, we are valuable because of who made us.” Mary Jane Hoffmaster This brief message has caused me to stop and think once again about some of the unkind thoughts or things I have said about others. Who are any of us to judge another person by their looks, their attitudes or actions? Yet we all do that. However, just like the discarded clay pots, we all have imperfections; yet we want to be accepted and know that someone
loves us. On an even different level, I have thought about persons who are in jail or prison for having committed some crime. It makes me wonder if anyone is willing to overlook what they have done. Now, I do not mean to absolve them from their crime, but to see them as a broken pot. How do we know what has caused them to act as they did? In many cases all we know about some criminals is what the media chooses to tell. And sometimes that is done sensationally in order to get our attention to their news program. What I am getting at is that God has made each and every one of us. We all share the same breath of life. Take a moment and think of someone whom you find it hard to be around: maybe a family member, a neighbor, a homeless person. Now think of that person as someone who is wonderfully made. Our best next step would be to pause for a moment and see if our attitude has softened because we see them differently. We can stop and ask the Lord to help us see others through his eyes, remembering that we are all made from the same breath of life.

If you were to ask a handful of persons Church where they most often Corner experience the presence of God, they are likely to say in prayer, during worship, in Cindy Ehlke personal moments Calvary Presbyterian of reflection and in nature. I seriously doubt that there are very many who would say at a hockey game. I recently did find God at a hockey game, but let’s back up and start at the beginning. Friends of ours had two extra tickets to a Thunderbirds hockey game and we gladly accepted. Most of the time, I was intent upon the game. However, I am a people watcher and found myself looking at the crowd, observing what they were doing during the game and during the intermissions. At times I am less than kind and will say to my husband, “did you see what they are wearing” or “look what they are eating!” (I am on a diet and am both jealous and critical of those who eat high-calorie, yummy stuff like French fries, hot dogs or milkshakes.) Needless to say, those persons would not want to know what I was thinking.

OPERATION WARM
We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives. – Dan Zadra
to share it with you.
Several months ago Raejean Spencer, Elk Ridge Elementary kindergarten teacher, shared a wonderful story about an experience one of her students had with the White River High School Boys Basketball Team. I was very touched by this story and wanted
Note from Raejean Spencer This is a photo of a current kindergartner at Elk Ridge Elementary. In October, when we were writing our learning goals for the year, this young man let me know how important physical education was and that he wanted to learn to shoot baskets. I emailed Chris Gibson, White River Athletic Director, to see if it would be possible to have an “expert” from the high school basketball team come over and give this student a few lessons.
A BIG thank you to the East Pierce Firefighters Benevolent Fund and Hunter Chumbley for providing about 150 new coats to students at Mountain Meadow and Foothills Elementary Schools this past month. There were lots of smiles on our kids’ faces as firefighters and teachers assisted students receiving warm coats in just the right sizes and colors.
Mr. Gibson emailed Rick Tripp, White River High School Boys Basketball Coach, and the next thing I knew we were setting up times for my student to attend some high school basketball practices. He was also invited to attend a high school basketball game. I went to the practice to take a few pictures and was so impressed with the time and direction not only Coach Tripp was giving my student, but also the players. They are all heroes in the eyes of my student. My student, his family, and I want to thank the White River team that made this all happen. My student is over the top with excitement about this experience! They even presented him with a team autographed basketball. Oh my goodness what an experience! What a positive impression you have all made!

Thank you, Mr. Gibson, Mr. Tripp and the White River High School Boys Basketball team for making a difference one student at a time.

THE “OTHER” TECHNOLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE Technology has changed the way we live, work, play, and learn. As the world that our students live in becomes increasingly dynamic as a result of technology, it is important to teach students how to use technology as an effective tool to build those important 21st Century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity along with the habits of mind and disposition needed to compete in a global marketplace. With the generous support of our community, the White River School District is making dramatic upgrades to our technology infrastructure. This includes increased network access and stability, instructional technology in all classrooms, and an increased student-device ratio at all grade levels. While this work is underway, we are also dedicated to the equally important work of providing the professional development and support that teachers need to take advantage of the rich learning opportunities that technology can help us create. We are fortunate to have added Lori Curtis to our team as Technology Learning Specialist to support our staff in this effort. Lori is an experienced technology integration coach and is committed to our shared mission of ensuring high levels of learning for all students, preparing them for success after high school. Please look for frequent updates on the work that our teachers are doing to improve learning for students through technology integration.
Technology in the Classroom: A Teacher’s Perspective By Nathan Barnett
Over the past 14 years that I’ve been teaching high school students, technology has changed and influenced how I teach. In the not-so-distant past, students went to the library to check out a book for a research paper; now they can access the same research on their smart phones or laptops any time, and from anywhere. Continual changes in technology present a unique challenge for educators to stay current, relevant, and effective. Gone are the days when memorizing names, dates, and places in history class was all a student needed in order to prepare for college or the work force. Fill-in-the-blank and matching exams have become archaic. Today’s students must understand how to apply acquired knowledge and then to innovate, and think critically and creatively. The use of technology in the classroom is not only helpful, but completely necessary. Learning information, finding historical patterns, drawing parallels and then making conclusions is tough to accomplish in a 55 minute class period. For this challenge, I’ve embraced the usage of social technology in the classroom. In my Advanced Placement Human Geography class building new knowledge is enhanced outside of class. Students supplement their learning at home by watching video lectures on YouTube of me explaining key concepts. They then access our online discussion board and classroom Twitter feed to participate in conversations, and ask questions about the content we’re learning. These serve as tools to extend the learning day well past the 55 minutes of face time we have together at school. Class time is then devoted to small and large group discussions that allow students to hear different ideas and begin to apply thoughts gleaned from the night before. I am then able to pull up a chair and participate with students in building our classroom culture and helping foster a desire to think at a deeper level. There is no doubt that we live in a fast-paced technology-centered world. Harnessing technology and getting it to work towards building intentional thinkers is just one exciting part of being a teacher.

The Compleat Home Gardener
Spring is starting to emerge this week as the green tips of snowdrop bulbs and crocus show up in area gardens. This means it is time to order seeds, hunt down hellebores to add to the landscape and decide that this is the year you will enjoy your garden more. Garden shows and nurseries also unwrap a fresh season of classes and lectures and now is the time to sign up. Here are some early season garden questions: In my neighborhood there is a pink rhododendron that I noticed flowering on the same Sunday that the Seahawks won the title. This means it was in bloom in January. Is this another January miracle? Sign me, Seahawk gardener Keep cheering because the name of the earlyblooming (as opposed to the Seahawks who are late bloomers) rhododendron is called “Christmas Cheer” and this compact rhododendron with pale pink blooms is usually in flower by February or March. A bit of mild winter weather can coax it into bloom on a balmy January day but unlike the name implies, I have never seen my Christmas Cheer rhododendron flower dur-

lish traditionally or self-publish on one of the many selfpublishing websites. It seems quick to self-publish, but one needs a lot of knowledge and motivation to self-promote. He asked me if I wanted to spend my time doing that or writing. Well, the answer is obvious. I don’t mind self-promoting once something is ready to go, but I really don’t want to spend time learning the obstacle course. Plus, when you self-publish, you have to constantly be “on”
hawking books. As we were walking out of the coffee shop we met at, I told him two stories. One was that I tried to contact a man I knew who has self-published several books. He broke contact with me a couple years ago for some unknown reason, but I reached out last week to ask if self-publishing is still working for him. No answer. Then I told him about my housebound friend to whom I gave a copy of my book. The first thing she said to me was,

“Do not spend a lot of money and publish this book yourself!” She was quite adamant. My writing coach said, “There’s your sign not to selfpublish. You got two.” I don’t know if I’ve talked about it much, but I’m big on divine signs. The problem is I rarely recognize them. And although I didn’t recognize them this time around, I had someone to see it for me. It was totally worth the money it cost me to hire this man of much perspective to tell me, “Here’s your sign.”

Here it is almost 11 o’clock and I’m just now sitting down to write. I slept in a bit this morning because my youngest is home sick, which I knew last night so called her in absent last night. I don’t like calling her in sick in the morning because I feel like I’m being judged by the attendance lady; so I don’t like talking to her. Then I didn’t have to try and shoot out of bed at six this morning to call before the attendance lady gets to work. Plus, I have nowhere to be today. I held laundry off until today because I had to be out of the house before noon yesterday. I went to a very interesting meeting with a writing coach. He’s not teaching me how to write; I feel like I have that down fairly well, but he’s helping me navigate the maze of publishing. I have to admit there was a big part of me that was hoping he would say, “Let me just take this book and hand it to my agent. You just sit back and relax.” It reminded me of when my mother moved in six months after my father passed away back in 2001. There was a huge part of me that was so glad my mommy was going to move in and run my household because it felt too hard. My kids were small, I felt like I was doing it all wrong. After a year or so, when my mother had taken over my household, I panicked and took it back. I also think she was feeling like she’d already done that time in her life and was trying to hand it

ing December. You can find this evergreen rhododendron at local nurseries or ask that they order one for you. A plant that cheers in the winter is a great way to be a 12. Better yet, order a dozen early bloomers and start a winter garden. I saw a magazine article about forcing bare branches of flowers into bloom. They showed how to force forsythia, quince and cherry tree branches. Will this work in our area of Western Washington? When is it safe to cut the branches? A.M., Bonney Lake Yes, forcing newlypruned whips or thin branches from forsythia, quince, cherry and even magnolia will work in our climate and the time to get snippy is now. The trick is to keep the cut branches hydrated, so split the stem with a knife or remove some of the side bark on the bottom third of the cut branch to help the harvest soak up the water. Once cut, place the vase of twigs in a cool garage or dark room until you see signs of color from the buds. You can also collect pussy willow branches and bring them indoors to enjoy this week. Is it too late to prune my roses? I am seeing green leaves sprouting from the branches. T.C., Auburn It is not too late – it could be a bit early. I usually prune roses right after Valentine’s Day but you can wait until midMarch or even April to prune your roses. Different varieties have specific likes when it comes to how much to prune off but all roses benefit from removing the three Ds - anything dead, damaged or diseased can be cut off any time of the year.
