Real-estate agent dives into TV’s ‘Shark Tank’ Ali receives deal from Herjavec for his Drain Strain invention SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

With a wife and daughter, both with long hair, it came as no surprise to Naushad Ali a couple of years ago when their bathroom sink became clogged. They called a plumber to their home and paid about $150 to have him clean out the sink’s P-trap, where the hair had become stuck. After that, Ali began thinking about the products out there designed to help with clogged sinks. Most of what came to his mind, however, were reactive — the products would help with unclogging the sink. And the straining devices out there that would prevent clogs are not pretty. Ali, a Woodinville resident who works as a real-estate agent at John L. Scott in downtown Redmond, said those are basically small mesh baskets that would replace the sink stopper and catch any debris. The problem with these baskets was that they do not [ more SHARKS page 6 ]

STEM High School students create aquifer education program SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

When the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) was planning to develop and construct Nikola Tesla STEM High School, one concern community members had was that the chosen location in unincorporated King County near Redmond is the site of an aquifer recharge zone. In order to ensure water in the aquifer, a natural water-purification system that provides drinking water for about half of Redmond, remains

as clean as possible, certain steps were taken during construction. For example, the school’s parking lot is porous to reduce stormwater runoff and a swale was constructed in the lot to manage water runoff, filter pollutants and increase rainwater infiltration. To take things a step further, a group of STEM students have created an aquifer education program to teach others about the site’s aquifer. The program was started by a group of students last spring and has been taken over by five juniors

Since the fall, Vibha Vadlamani, Dinesh Parimi, Udit Ranasaria, Sonia Murthy and Sophia Tevaryan have been working together to make sure their fellow students are aware of their campus’ environmental ele-

ments and their importance. “It was really important we take care of the aquifer health,” said Murthy. After learning about the program, Redmond Mayor John Marchione, who is also a board member for the Cascade Water Alliance (CWA), [ more AQUIFER page 5 ]

After a case-setting hearing on Tuesday, the trial date for David DeLay and Marysa Comer has been scheduled for March 30. As previously reported, DeLay, 48, was arrested Jan. 12 at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport after arriving on a flight from Chicago. He was charged with three counts of promoting prostitution in the second degree, one count of extortion in the second degree, one count of tampering with a witness and trafficking. Comer, 20, was DeLay’s partner and was arrested on Jan. 13 at a Chicago hotel and was booked into Cook County Jail in Chicago. She returned to Washington and was booked into the Seattle Correctional Facility on Jan. 29 for failure to appear and promoting prostitution in the second degree, said Janessa Rosick, public information coordinator for the Redmond Police Department. As previously reported, Comer was charged with three counts of promoting prostitution in the second degree, one count of extortion in the second degree, one count of tampering with a witness, cyberstalking and criminal impersonation in the first degree.

Hopelink connects clients with energy assistance programs Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com

About four years ago, Sarah Wright lost her job. At the time, she had two children — one of whom was a newborn, the other was about 6. She decided to stay home to take care of them, but as a result, the family budget took a hit. Initially, Wright was reluctant to ask for help, but eventually, she turned to Hopelink. The Redmond-based nonprofit organization serves homeless and lowincome families, children, seniors and people with disabilities, and with their help, Wright has been able to get assistance with her energy bills through two

different programs. Those two programs are the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) through the U.S. Office of Community Services and the Puget Sound Energy Home Energy Lifeline Program (PSE HELP). Wright — now a single mother with three kids aged 10, 4 and 17 months, living in Shoreline (where Hopelink has a service center) — received grants to help with her bills, lightening her financial burden.

TWO AVENUES OF ASSISTANCE

Kris Betker, spokesperson for Hopelink, said

the nonprofit’s role is to connect their clients to the programs and offer additional assistance such as help with the applications process, figuring out whether someone is eligible and how much they could receive through the programs. “We make it easier for them,” she said. While both assistance programs offer financial aid for those who qualify, Betker said the two programs have different thresholds for who qualifies. She said for LIHEAP, that threshold is an income that is at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty level. For PSE HELP, the threshold

INVALUABLE ASSISTANCE

Sasville said PSE HELP runs on a yearly cycle from October to September, but customers are able to apply any time throughout the year. But she did add customers seeking assistance must reapply for the program each year. From October 2013 to September 2014, PSE HELP assisted 33,223 households. In addition, if a customer is not eligible for PSE HELP but still has trouble making ends meet, Sasville said PSE will work with them to come up with a solution. Betker said in 2014, Hopelink served 11,190 individuals — or 4,626 households — who needed assistance with their energy bills. Betker added that the customers are open to all who meet the requirements. In other words, you don’t need to have your power turned off or nearly turned off to apply. “You don’t need to have a disconnect notice before asking for help,” she said. “If you are in need…that’s what the program is for

For Wright, the assistance she has received through Hopelink has been invaluable. She said she has been able to put the money she has saved on utilities toward things such as school clothes and supplies for her 10-yearold as well as just other household bills she has. And while Wright has benefited greatly through Hopelink’s assistance, she admits to almost not receiving it because “it’s hard to ask for help.” But after connecting with Hopelink, she is glad she has and recommends anyone who may need help to ask for it. “(Hopelink has) really been a godsend for me,” she said. “They’ve been a great resource.” For more information about Hopelink’s energy assistance programs, visit www.hope-link.org/get_ help/energy_assistance or call 1 (800) 348-7144 to make an in-person appointment. Public weighs in on HOV lane tolls for I-405

Kirkland City Hall Feb. 19. A presentation by Tolling Division Assistant Secretary Craig Stone to the State Transportation Commission (WSTC) at the beginning of the meeting intended to relieve some concerns about the proposal, as well as explain the necessity for it on a highway which Stone said is among the worst, if not the worst, in the state when it comes to traffic congestion. Traffic is so bad, he said, the highoccupancy vehicle (HOV) lane is not meeting state and federal requirements for vehicles to be traveling at 40 mph 90 percent of the time. Instead, Stone said, vehicles are driving at that speed only 60 percent of the time, despite adding nine transit centers, 5,000 new park-and-ride stalls and 1,700 vanpools since 2002. The proposed toll would charge for the use of the existing carpool lane from State Route 522 to Interstate 5, along with two lanes between Northeast 6th Street in Bellevue and SR 522 in Bothell, for those with less than the specified occupancy. Betker added that LIHEAP is open to anyone and PSE HELP is only available to the company’s customers as there are areas within the utility’s service area that are served by a local public utility district. Suzanne Sasville, a supervisor for PSE’s energy assistance programs, said they have about $16.9 million available for the utility’s various clientassistance programs. “We are really trying to get the word out that this program exists,” she said. She said the year-long PSE HELP program is administered by 11 local community-action agencies, including Hopelink, and assists in covering about 40-60 percent of a household’s annual energy usage and the grant money is applied directly to the customer’s bill. Sasville added that if there are extra funds available after a bill is taken care of, that money will roll over and be applied to the customer’s next bill. [ HOV from page 2] that seat at least 16 people would be exempt from the toll. Stone cited tolled highways in Miami and San Diego as evidence of how the proposal would reduce traffic congestion. Though the commission has yet to determine the tolling rate, the estimate is between 75 cents and $10, though Stone added that they estimate 77 percent of tolls would be less than $1. The proposed toll rate on I-405 from Bellevue to Lynnwood is just one step in an overall plan to toll the entire highway from where it begins, north in Lynwood, to where it connects with State Route 167 in Renton. SR 167 already has a tolled HOV lane. The WSTC will make their final decisions at a meeting on March 18 at Kirkland City Hall. The public comment segment of the meeting was rife with emotion as both attendants and the advisory board members argued and debated. At one point during the meeting, one man spoke out of order. Among the people to speak during the public comment was Kenmore Mayor David Baker, who stated that since tolling began on State Route 520, the Kenmore Crosslake Corridor has been swamped with commuters looking to avoid the toll by driving north of Lake Washington on SR 522. If I-405 is tolled, he warned, communities like Kenmore “will be severely affected” as the city’s streets take the brunt of toll diversion.

Orca Lift: Transit option for those who depend on public transportation LARRY PHILLIPS, LARRY GOSSETT AND JOE MCDERMOTT

King County’s new $1.50 low income transit fare, Orca Lift, goes into effect on March 1. Orca lift gives residents a cheaper alternative to get to school, work, health appointments and key services they need. This valuable program will help many residents in our region that are struggling to make ends meet. Some in King County are starting to experience economic recovery from the Great Recession, but many in our region still struggle with rising housing and transportation costs. For too many riders, high transportation costs present a stark option: deciding between having enough money to ride the bus to get to employment or services and putting food on the table. They are riders that are still feeling the full brunt of the economic downturn; the unemployed and those working multiple jobs to stay above water. Some people who, because they cannot afford to live near their jobs, are taking two or three buses to get to work. In 2013, as we braced for the fifth in a series of proposed fare increases since 2008, the council resolved to find some relief for those who depend on affordable public transportation. The opportunity to get to school, employment and services affordably provides pathways for residents to thrive.

GUEST COLUMN

The county is committed to creating equity and building social justice in order to make progress in the elimination of the root cause of those inequities. We understand that access to transportation is a critical “determinant of equity” and that in developing Orca Lift we were establishing a policy that will carry forward into the future regardless of economic ups and downs. We asked a panel of representatives from a wide range of human service agencies, transit advocacy groups, and government agencies to explore the options available to the county. Their recommendation was to expand the One Regional Card for All (ORCA) program to include bus riders who meet specific financial guidelines — such as having an income 200 percent or less of the federal poverty level as established

by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department. Last February, the County Council unanimously approved the $1.50 fare, which will be available to adults that meet income and other requirements. Eligible riders can enroll at specific social service agencies or through Public Health — Seattle & King County. Orca Lift is a fare that acknowledges the need for providing transit access and mobility for those who would see the bus doors close on them without it.

Metropolitan King County Council members Larry Phillips, Larry Gossett and Joe McDermott lead the council in the development of the low-income fare program that has become Orca Lift.

Save the downtown Nokomis building (Editor’s note: Following is a comment that was submitted to the City of Redmond regarding the five-story housing project proposed for the property Al Brown’s parents donated to Nokomis.) I am the son of the Browns, who donated the land located at 16210 N.E. 80th St. in downtown Redmond to the Nokomis Club for the first library building. I recall that we lived on the property for a while before the building was constructed. When we later moved out to Index, my mother would drive in dangerous weather and road conditions just to get to a Nokomis meeting … Nokomis and its work for the community meant so much to her. It was in 1933 that my mother, Irene, an active and energetic member of Nokomis for more than 60 years, realized the growing need for

a library and also for a community clubhouse. My mother believed in the power of education and that a love of reading could have positive impacts on the lives of both Redmond’s children and adults. She advocated and practiced “learning a new word a day.” My parents, in particular my mother, donated the land in perpetuity for community use. She may be rolling over in her grave if she knew that this historic building was set for demolition and that a five-story building is proposed on this small sliver of land in downtown. This building and its land are unique for their contribution to Redmond’s history, the history of the library and especially because it tells the story of a group of women during the height of the Depression who did something amazing for the Redmond community at a time of both personal and national adversity. Save the building and the land for a community rather than a

commercial use.

Is traditional journalism dying? Whenever I told people that I was interested in studying communications and broadcast journalism, I was always met with confused looks followed by the statement “isn’t that a dying field?” It is true that many well-known forms of professional journalism have fallen on hard times, but they aren’t dying. It is just a transitional period. This sort of transition has actually happened before. Generalinterest magazines like Life once dominated the market, but when television came along, these formats faded due to the new medium that did the job better. However, magazines themselves have managed to survive by living off of niche audiences. They just had to evolve to adapt to the new environment.

Of course, when people talk about the fall of traditional journalism, social media is frequently mentioned. Social media has created what is known as “amateur journalism.” Despite its popularity, it isn’t able to provide the reliable sources and information that traditional journalism is known for. Even still, social media cannot be ignored and it’s good to see most news outlets focus a lot of time and resources into social media to adapt to the times. In an era where technology changes so rapidly, it’s easy to write off traditional forms of journalism as dead. However, it’s just an evolutionary process in how to best communicate news and information to people. No matter what medium is being used — print, digital or something different in the future — the core principles of traditional journalism will stay intact.

EDUCATING OTHERS

Currently, the program is tailored toward students from about third grade through middle school, although the group hopes to build up their curriculum for high schoolers as well as the greater community, said Vadlamani. So far, the students have visited three nearby schools this school year: Louisa May Alcott and Rachel Carson elementary schools and Inglewood Middle School (IMS). While Alcott is located right next door to STEM, Carson and IMS are located further east in Sammamish. Vadlamani said the aquifer underneath their school does not serve Sammamish, but there is an aquifer in that city, so they were able to cater their lessons to relate better to the Sammamish students. Today, the five will visit Redmond Middle School (RMS) to teach during three periods. Vadlamani said the enthu-

“These kids are making a difference in an issue that is important to the community.” Teresa Fowlkes, general manager of the Union Hill Water Association — the water service provider for the Union Hill area — agreed that the work the students are doing is important. “Any educational program is wonderful for the community to protect our water supply and encourage conservation,” she said.

said his students will be going toward the contest’s grand prize, which could earn them an additional $15,000. He added that the prize money is not any sort of scholarship, but a personal prize and goes directly to the students. While the recognition they have received has been great, Town said it is more significant that the group kept things close to home. “This is an issue that affects the local community,” he said.

school. He said the STEM faculty will suggest real-world problems that need solving and then point students toward contests that address these issues. Vadlamani, Parimi, Ranasaria, Murthy and Tevaryan entered their aquifer education program into the 201415 Lexus Eco Challenge in the Land and Water category. The team was named one of the high school winners and they received $10,000. Town

said, “I applaud the students’ initiative to learn about their groundwater aquifer. Ensuring water supply for both current and future generations is important. I look forward to hearing about the insights they gain about the role ground aquifers play in local water systems.”

REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS In addition to their teachers’ support, Murthy said their adviser Mike Town has really motivated them on the project. Town, who teaches Advanced Placement environmental science and environmental engineering and sustainable design, said the program is not part of any of the students’ classes. It is one of many contest-based mentorship projects at the

siasm they have received from teachers eager to have them visit their classes has been nice. She said RMS initially wanted them to spend the whole day at the school but that was not possible, so the teachers at that school told them they were willing to be flexible in order for the lesson to reach as many students as possible. Vadlamani said they offered to combine classes and even rearrange their schedules if needed. She said their own teachers at STEM have also been very supportive and understanding as the five have missed a number of classes to visit other schools. “Our teachers have been really accommodating,” Vadlamani said. In addition to other teachers’ enthusiasm and excitement, Redmond City Council member Tom Flynn, who is also on the board for the CWA, is excited about the students’ project. “This is a great way for the students to learn about the complexities of managing and protecting our drinking water resources,” he said. “While Lake Tapps is identified as the primary source for future additional water supply for our member cities, groundwater aquifers are a unique resource that are an important part of the ecosystem.”

[6] February 27, 2015 have a stopper function as the sink stopper would need to be removed in order for them to be installed. In addition, hair and other debris that is collected would be visible to all, which Ali said his wife was

not going to allow.

A SOLUTION BEFORE IT BECOMES A PROBLEM

In response to these dilemmas, Ali set about finding a solution. “My mission was to create

something my wife would let me put in the sink,” he said. The result of that mission is Drain Strain, a universal replacement stopper designed to fit in most sink drains and trap and capture anything from hair to jewelry, preventing it from going down the drain. It does this with a small basket attached to the stopper that can be easily removed for emptying, cleaning out or replacing. “You never have to touch the gunk,” Ali said about the latter and what could get stuck in a sink. As a preventative measure, he added that Drain Strain also helps to eliminate the need to call a plumber or use harmful chemicals to unclog a drain. The initial idea for Drain Strain came to Ali in January 2012. He hired a Chicagobased design company to help create what he was looking for. Designing the product took

about nine months. Ali said that process included looking into every component of the product, including at various straining mechanisms such as sponges and brushes before settling on the basket design.

TV DEBUT

All of that work paid off as a few weeks ago, Ali appeared on the ABC’s “Shark Tank,” a TV show that gives people from all walks of life the opportunity to live the American dream. According to the show’s website, entrepreneurs are put in front of the Sharks, “self-made, multi-millionaire and billionaire tycoons” to pitch their business ideas in the hope of securing investors in their product. The Sharks include billionaire Mark Cuban, real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran, “Queen of QVC” Lori Greiner, technology innovator Robert Herjavec, fashion and branding expert Daymond John and venture capitalist Kevin O’Leary. From his appearance on the show, Ali received a $110,000 deal from Herjavec in exchange for 10 percent of the company ownership. Ali

said going into the show, he had asked for the same dollar amount, but in exchange for 15 percent company ownership. The fact that one of the show’s Sharks was willing to pay the same amount for a smaller percentage of the company really helped validate his idea and product, Ali said. “That was really exciting,” he said, adding that he was also excited about getting the exposure for his product. “It was about my product being on TV.”

A DRAWN-OUT PROCESS

Ali, a long-time “Shark Tank” fan, initially applied to be on the show through its website. But he said nothing ever came from it as things can easily get lost in the shuffle when it comes to online applications. He ended up answering a local casting call in Seattle about a year ago after learning about it from his business partner at John L. Scott. Ali said he and his partner were on the phone talking business on a Thursday night when the other man asked Ali if he would be attending the

“Shark Tank” audition that upcoming Saturday. Ali had not been aware of the audition and did not have anything ready to present at the time. So the next day, Friday, he contacted the design firm in Chicago and asked them to put together a Drain Strain prototype for him and send it overnight to arrive at the hotel where the auditions were being held first thing Saturday morning. The firm pulled through and Ali said he was very grateful to them for their fast work. “If I had known (about the local audition), I would have been a lot better prepared,” he said. Ali added that during that initial audition, people only get 90 seconds to pitch their product or idea. In addition to such a short pitch, he said “you get no feedback” and as a result, he was very uncertain about how he did. “I thought I’d blown it,” he admitted. The overall audition process for the show can take anywhere between four to six months, he said, and no one is guaranteed to get onto the show. “You can get cut at any step of the process,” Ali said. For Ali, the long audition process, which ended with him filming in front of the Sharks in September 2014, helped him be more productive in thinking about how to market and sell the Drain Strain. He said before the opportunity to be on the show came along, he had put Drain Strain on the back burner to focus on his real-estate business. “Shark Tank” helped bring things back to the forefront, he said.

FUTURE PRODUCTION

The Drain Strain is not currently for sale yet as Ali said they have to go over some final details and fine tuning before they go into mass production. He said this should be beginning in April and consumers should be able to find the Drain Strain on store shelves beginning in May or June. These dates are still tentative and Ali said he wants to make sure to put out a quality product for consumers and if that means things are delayed for a month, that is OK. “The most important thing is to deliver the right product,” he said. Drain Strain products will be available for bathroom sinks and Ali said they are working on a bathtub version to come out later in the year. He said they do not plan to create something for the kitchen as most people have garbage disposals.
