Kiwanis celebrates four decades of making eggciting memories BY TJ MARTINELL tmartinell@kirklandreporter.com

H

olding an Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday in Western Washington without at least one year ruined by bad weather is no small thing. Kirkland Kiwanis has found a way to do it more often than not during four decades at Peter Kirk Park. One of the largest egg

hunts in the city, the club members put out around 15,000 chocolate eggs in three different age sections, which are found within minutes by children and their sometime equally zealous parents. Ron Olsen, a Kiwanis member of 12 years and past president, said that despite the unpredictability of spring weather, they had never had the outdoor event turn sour. “It has gone well every single year regardless of the

weather,” he said, describing the event as a “colorful frenzy.” “The kids always seem to go home happy.” John Hurney, who has been a member since the 1980s, said the number of kids has definitely grown over the years. Though he said a decrease in the number of egg hunts in the area may have something to do with it, he also cited their ideal location at Peter Kirk Park in downtown and the work by

Kiwanis to ensure the event runs smoothly. One way they have done that, he said, is by fine-tuning the time at which they put out the chocolate eggs. On sunny Easters, if they are put out too early they can melt. “The best optimal situation is mild but not too hot,” he said. “The timing is delicate.” Typically, he said they tend to place the eggs just minutes before the hunt actually

starts. Despite going on for four decades, Olsen said the egg hunt itself has not changed much, though one addition came after Hurney and Kiwanis Secretary Matt Gregory created the Builders Club at Kirkland Middle School, which is sponsored through Kiwanis. For the egg hunt, the students in the club dress up in bunny costumes, though former members now [ more EASTER page 2 ]

Annual Mother’s Day Half Marathon to use Cross Kirkland Corridor BY TJ MARTINELL tmartinell@kirklandreporter.com

The annual Eastside Subaru Mother’s Day Half Marathon and 5K set for May 10 at Juanita Beach Park will mark the first major event on the Cross Kirkland Corridor (CKC) since its completion and ribbon cutting in late January. For the marathon’s planners, the CKC will allow runners to enjoy a flatter, more scenic section of the course, while the city is using the race to work out guidelines for future use in other events. The race, which starts and ends at Juanita Beach Park, will involve 5.5 miles on the CKC, starting at Northeast 28th Place near Interstate 520 and ending where the trail meets 112th Street. Kirkland City Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator Kari Page, who plans to participate in the race herself, said that they intend to keep the CKC open to the public whenever an event uses the trail in order to prevent potential conflicts. “It’s the public’s corridor, and we want it to remain that way,” she said. “I think one of our main focuses on any event is to remain open for people who want

to walk and bike and do whatever on the corridor as well.” Ever since the CKC opened, Page said they have received multiple inquiries about possibly using it, and they expect more in the future. “I think we are bracing ourselves for that,” she said. In the meantime, she said they plan to have a website for the CKC up and running, as well as created a template for its use. One policy they have decided is to limit the number of events per month to just two. Others, she said, such as the number of participants allowed in events on the trail, will be decided based on how well it handles the estimated 2,000 marathon runners. Regardless, they expect it to be a better experience for runners. “We hope it’s ideal,” she said. “We’ve laid down some pretty good guidelines that will make it safe and fun for all.” The marathon planners saw the CKC as a great way to improve the course experience as well reduce the number of hills in the race, according to Director of Marketing Garett Slettebak at Pro-Motions Inc. Kameha’s Coffee closes after brewing family feud BY TJ MARTINELL tmartinell@kirklandreporter.com

Kameha’s Coffee in Juanita has shut down after police were called to a domestic disturbance in late February involving the family running the business. Officers arrived to the coffee shop on the 11400

block of 98th Ave NE the morning of Feb. 20 at around 8:30 a.m. after a 26-year-old woman reported her 49-year-old mother had gotten into a physical confrontation with her 30-year-old sister and was threatening to “beat the crap out of the kids.”

When police arrived they found the 26-yearold woman’s husband, her 30-year-old sister, as well as her 24-year-old brother outside the coffee shop. They reported their mother was still inside the shop. Officers entered through the front door, to which the

mother demanded, “How the hell did you get in here?” The mother told officers that her children were “ganging up” on her and trying to orchestrate a hostile takeover of the business due to the fact that while her husband [ more FEUD page 3 ]

in high school sometimes volunteer as well, according to Hurney. For an event that lasts roughly five minutes, however, there is a lot of preparation beforehand, Hurney said. In recent years they have needed city permits in order to continue holding it at Peter Kirk Park, as well as be concerned about potential liabilities. “It’s extremely complicated today compared to the old days,” he said. “The people in the parks department are great, but it just changed

everything.” Another reason for the egg hunt’s continued success, Hurney said, is that it leads to other activities in downtown for families. “The beauty of it is if it’s a nice day people just hang out afterwards,” he said. “It’s a family gathering participation thing. It’s a get a family out of the house day. Even when it’s rained, it’s been a good time for people. They seem to always have a good time.” The hunt begins at 1:30 p.m. and is free to the public. Different areas of the park

will be designated for specific age groups. The playground area will be for ages 1–4, the outfield of the baseball field for ages 5–7, and the west side of QFC for ages 8–12. Other events for Easter weekend include specials at the Trellis Restaurant in the Heathman Hotel Kirkland. On April 5, people can enjoy brunch on Waterways’ Dining Cruises or listen to the Seattle Rock Orchestra at the Kirkland Performance Center. girl who was with her family for the church event on Nov. 23, 2014. According to testimony provided to police by the girl’s mother, one of the male volunteers at the church followed her family around throughout the evening, and then at around 6:30 p.m. he followed their daughter into a craft area in a different building, where she was separated from the rest of her family. There, the man allegedly showed the girl tattoos on his arms and legs. Later during a game with the congregation, the girl told police, the man touched her body, including the rear of her bra with

his hands. He allegedly told her, among other things, “I go to bed naked” and “Do you sleep naked, too?” He then told her not to tell her mother anything he had said. According to the girl, this happened when there were a lot of people around and mostly whispered. The girl’s parents found out about what had happened after the church event when their daughter got upset about the possibility of attending another church event. Police were later able to identify Montes, whom they discovered had been arrested in 2004 for stalking, then in

2012 for assault at a Bellevue church shelter for homeless men. When questioned at the church, Montes denied having spoken to the girl or even recalling her or her family. He also allegedly said he had showed his tattoos to lot of people, but refused to show them to the officer. The Prosecutor’s Office is requesting bail be set at $40,000.

The ups and downs of Eastside running

I

have to admit I laughed a bit when I discovered one of the reasons to use the Cross Kirkland Corridor for the Mother’s Day Half Marathon was to reduce the number of hills runners had to contend with in the course. As both a runner and someone who grew up in this area, I can appreciate the complicated relationship Eastsiders have with their hills. They give our landscape variety. They also provide fantastic views from homes, to the delight of real estate agents. But they’re lousy if you drive manual, prefer commuting on a bike, or have to use them during bad winters. Try driving up Finn Hill with a thin layer of ice on the roads, for example. Until I was in second grade my family lived on (the other) Main Street at the top of a hill, in the appropriately titled Lake Hills neighborhood. Like ordinary boys of a time seemingly outlawed now, my older brother and I loved riding our bicycles around trying to find trouble. To prevent this, my dad liked to run alongside us and provide some direction, geographically and metaphorically speaking, usually to Lake Hills Park near Tillicum Middle School and Phantom Lake. Our journey always inevitably concluded, however, with the long, grueling haul up the hill on Main Street back to our house. My dad usually had to push both of us up after we had pedaled furiously, but futilely in the hopes of making it up ourselves. I don’t recall if I ever made it up that hill on my own. Maybe it was like Charlie Brown and that lousy football. But I’d like to think this prepubescent regimen adequately prepared me for when I joined the cross country team at Sammamish High School. I can’t speak for other high schools in the Bellevue School District, but we had plenty of options to choose from when it came to conditioning on hills. In particular, there is a trail running east of Kelsey

Creek consisting of hills known as the “Seven Hills of Hell,” which we were instructed to run as though riding a roller coaster - slow to the top, sprint to the bottom - until our legs felt like jelly and our lungs so charred we sounded like a former Marlboro Man in an anti-smoking commercial. Our home course at Robinswood Park also had hills aplenty. Our coach had a thing about hills. He loved them, saw them as opportunities to gain an advantage over other teams who trained on flat ground, and he taught us to attack them mercilessly. It seemed cruel, but it paid off during races when other runners struggled or tried to keep their pace despite the elevation increase. Whether due to my own peculiarity, or the particular strain of masochism that seems inherent in cross country culture, the experience became addicting. Even today, I have to restrain myself from sprinting up hills while venturing through Seattle. While attending Eastern Washington University in Cheney, I kept up on running to maintain strong

cardio and sought out the one hill to run up in town. My last year of college, I discovered the Bloomsday Run in Spokane, which usually involves 50,0000 runners. The decision to participate was very much a spur-of-the-moment type of thing. The last day of registration, and mere days away from the race, I decided to take a bus into town and sign up. I then arrived in downtown the morning of the race completely unaware of what to expect from the course. As it turns out, there were many hills. Many, many hills. At the same time, I am having to duck and weave through thousands and thousands and thousands of other runners, some more motivated than others. Just recollecting the race is a mental exercise. I think I speak for many Eastsiders when I say we appreciate hills, but all in moderation.

As I understand it, the Rose Hill Fire Station is made up of three fireman and serves the area from Bridle Trails to Kingsgate (now labeled by the Kirkland City Council as Evergreen Hill). It also happens that it is the only Kirkland Fire station east of 405. If Kirkland experiences a major earthquake and the Washington State Department of Transportation declares all overpasses and underpasses as unsafe for travel, the entire area east of 405 is cut off from the west side. The entire Kirkland community east of 405 and having approximately one half the city’s population has three on-duty firemen. Meanwhile, on the west side of 405 (the other half of the population) there is the Houghton Fire Station the Forbes Creek Fire Station, the Finn Hill Fire Station and the Totem Lake Fire Station. Those four stations have sixteen on duty firemen. As I understand it, correct me if I am wrong, the Kirkland City Council wants to build another fire station at the Rite Aid site in Juanita, 1.8 miles from the Totem Lake Fire Station. That plan would make a total of five stations in the west half of Kirkland and leaving the east half of Kirkland with one station. In mathematical terms, the plan equals three

firemen east of 405 and sixteen firemen west of 405. There apparently is an ex-King County fire station for sale in the Kingsgate (Evergreen Hill) neighborhood, sitting on property and ready to be remodeled into a first class fire station. Purchasing this station could bring very needed emergency services to the east side of 405. Is the word “nuts” too strong a word to describe the Kirkland City Council’s idea of building yet another fire station only 1.8 miles from the Totem Lake Station on the wrong side of 405?

Nearly everything is packaged in plastic After reading all of the articles on the “one-time use plastic bag,” it is apparent that the official of Kirkland, and other cities that voted for the ban, do not realize that almost everything we purchase is contained in plastic; a loaf of bread, prepackaged lettuce, some egg cartons, roses usually are wrapped with plastic, greeting cards are made with plastic, nuts, bolts and washers are in plastic boxes, yard care products are in plastic bags, etc. These are also not biodegradable. Also, when we purchase fresh produce we use a plastic bag. Another point to be made is Waste Management requires all garbage to be bagged; guess what, garbage bags are plastic.

The “one-time use plastic bag” does not inundate our landfill areas as much as other plastic items being discarded. After reading another article about the possibility of Ebola being incubated in a consumer’s bag, can this be transferred to the store counter and then given to other customers and create deaths? Is the enactment of this law going to create a liability to the cities that have adopted the ban because of endangerment to customer’s health? They have been made aware of this possibility. The real question about the 5-cent charge for paper bags that are now free to the consumer, what is the money going to be used for and who gets it? Is this another form of taxation by the cities that have adopted the ban?

Bill Olmstead, Kirkland
