Southern residents buoyed by another newborn By Emily Greenberg Journal reporter

Whale-watch enthusiasts spotted another new addition to J-pod near Active Pass, British Columbia, March 30. When first sighted, the killer whale calf still showed tale-tell signs of fetal folds, indicating it was only a few days old. Known as J-52, the newborn is presumably a member of 42-year-old J-16’s matriline, the group it was seen swimming with. This family also includes a calf born just before the new year, J-51. “We’re just going on the basis of photographs by other people,” said Ken Balcomb, founder of the Center for Whale Research. “We don’t want to prematurely say who the mom is.” Balcomb said it’s too early to tell who J-52’s mom is because after giving birth to a 500pound baby, another female will often take on the role as “babysitter” before the mother recuperates and begins nursing. The mother won’t be determined until the Center can properly observe the calf. The whales were headed north to feed in the Strait of Georgia, and their return to local waters could be anywhere from one day to a few weeks, Balcomb said. J-52 is the fourth newborn Southern resident since the new year, but it’s not necessarily indicative of a baby boom. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had so many in such a short time,” Balcomb said. “We’ve had upwards of seven to eight born in a year.” Balcomb also credits an increased effort in monitoring the orcas throughout the winter, as well as being in tune with whale-watchers, for the sightings of new calves over the past six months.

The latest addition to the Southern residents, J-52, joins fellow newborn J-51, first sighted in late December and seen here swimming along side its mother, J-19.

deceased at the scene. Fletcher was eastbound in the 200 block of Islandale Road and traveling at a highrate of speed when he apparently lost control of the fourdoor Volkswagen sedan he was driving while on a fairly straight stretch of roadway, according to Undersheriff Brent Johnson. The sedan went into a counter-clockwise spin and struck several trees along the side of the roadway before coming to a stop upside down, Johnson said.

The 36-year-old was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, he added. An autopsy is being conducted by the Snohomish Medical Examiner. Johnson confirmed that Fletcher, a Lopez Island resident, had been pulled over for speeding the day before the fatal crash and let go with a warning. Fletcher is the second person to die in a singlevehicle collision in San Juan County in the past five months. A 43-year-old Orcas Island man died in mid-November after losing control of his motorcycle on an s-curve on Upper Deer Harbor Road and struck a tree, less than a mile from home. Islandale Road, located at the south end of the island, is the primary road connecting the neighborhoods of Hunter and Mud Bays to Mud Bay Road. Fletcher leaves behind a wife and three children. The Lopez community has set up a fund to help the family with their mortgage, power, heating and insurance bills. To donate visit http:// www.gofundme.com/qrmm7q.

Thank a volunteer during National Volunteer Week Look around you. Chances are a family member, a friend or a neighbor volunteer for a nonprofit organization here on Lopez Island. Perhaps you have the satisfaction of volunteering yourself. No one knows exactly how many individuals volunteer here or how many hours are given, but we all know that this island would not be what it is without the generosity and dedication of volunteers. Take the opportunity to thank a

volunteer during National Volunteer Week, April 12 through 18. National Volunteer Week is about the people who make it possible for so many of us to stay on the island. It is about taking action in the community. It is about bonding and banding together. And it is about encouraging our neighbors to volunteer for their organization of choice. Lopez Island Hospice and Home Support is one of the

many organizations that benefit from the services of volunteers. More than 50 people volunteer to help our neighbors in need. Mary O’Bryant, manager of Client Services, said, “I can’t tell you how much we appreciate what our volunteers do. Many of our clients would not be able to stay at home without their help.” During National Volunteer Week take a moment to thank the volunteers who work with so many

organizations on Lopez Island. And please consider sharing your time and talents with an organization here on the island. As O’Bryant said, “You get back so

much more than you put into it.” For more information, contact Lynne Keeley, Lopez Island Hospice and Home Support, at 468-4446 or admin@lihhs.org.

“This is for adults in an indulgent and thoughtfully designed and managed private preserve. You’ll notice that this book is mostly a collection of camping spots run by public agencies (National Parks, State Parks, Department of Natural Resources, and so on). Generally, I try to stay away from privately run camping organizations because they usually do not meet my camping criteria, are almost always monopolized by RVs, and aren’t exactly the kind of places where you can count on respectful camp neighbors. The health of a private campground is also dependant on the owner’s ability to run it in the black, and it often reflects a tight operating budget and a make-do mentality – not unlike a lot of landlords I’ve known in my time. Every once in a while, along comes an exception to the rule. Lopez Farm Cottages and Tent Camping easily qualifies as a worthwhile destination for creatively blending this island’s mostneeded services (thoughtful tent camping and private cottages) tastefully and practically. If you plan to bring the kids, however, think again. Lopez Farm accommodates no one under age 14 (except an adorable assortment of the four-legged variety – mostly lambs, fawns and baby rabbits. Just minutes from the Lopez Island ferry terminal and only 1 mile from the village of Lopez, Lopez Farm is picturesque – situated in the middle of a broad, rolling meadow…” Source: The Best in Tent Camping – Washington Author: Jeanne Pyle

Students clean up Lopez for school trip fundraiser Do you ever wish that some kind, diligent elves would magically appear on our island and pick up all the litter that you see on roadsides or the beach? Lopez Elementary students are volunteering to be such elves for you and the Lopez community. This spring, Lopez School fifth-graders offer the service of beach or neighbor-

hood clean-up to raise funds for the annual study trip to Islandwood. Islandwood is an outdoor learning center, located on Bainbridge Island, designed to provide learning experiences that inspire life-long environmental and community stewardship. “Students will be immersed in Islandwood’s magical, natural 255-acre outdoor classroom for four

the goal to raise an additional $2,300 with support from the community to bring the cost of the Islandwood trip down to $75 per student. The trip is scheduled for June 8 through11 this year. The students, along with volunteer parent chaperones, are planning to go to various roadsides and beaches to pick up objects that do not belong there. For contributions of $125 or more, the group is willing to offer its clean-up service in a neighborhood or area of the contributors’ choosing. You may also donate any amount or sponsor one student for a $25 pledge. Any contribution is appreciated. “It will be fun to work with friends on beach cleanup. And I can’t wait to go to Islandwood. I heard from my older brother and friends who have gone that it was the best, field trip by far, and they learned so much,” said Sara Greacen, a Lopez School student. 50th ANNIVERSARY VIETNAM WAR COMMEMORATION LOCAL EVENTS APRIL 12-17

Seattle and Washington State have an unusual role in the Vietnam War Commemoration, a national initiative to thank Vietnam veterans a half century after the United States rapidly escalated its deployment of troops to South Vietnam following the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Many of the troops who returned home were met with disdain rather than with the thanks that veterans of other conflicts received. Joe Galloway, the Vietnam correspondent who authored the book “We Were Soldiers Once... And Young” (adapted into the 2002 film “We Were Soldiers”), is in Seattle for a week of interviews with local Vietnam veterans. He will speak at Seattle Rotary’s noon luncheon April 15 and will be featured at a breakfast interview session at the Columbia Tower Club on April 17. The Vietnam War Commemoration is aimed at spurring events and activities in states, cities and towns around the country to recognize Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. The partners’ program is designed for state and local communities, veterans’ organizations and other nongovernmental organizations to assist in thanking and honoring Vietnam Veterans and their families. To learn how to become a part of the 50 Vietnam Veterans Commemorative, communities may seek information or apply to become a Commemorative Partner by going to: www.vietnamwar50th.com/commemorative_partners/commemorative_partner_program th

Galloway has been going around the country doing three two-hour interviews a day with Vietnam veterans from across the services spectrum and by now has well over 75 two-hour interviews done, as he explained it, “beginning with Colin Powell and working outward.” Galloway was a Texas boy who became a correspondent for United Press International and, in the battle of Ia Drang that his book and its movie adaptation made famous, he was decorated for heroism on the battlefield, receiving the bronze star for rescuing two wounded soldiers while under fire. He was praised by the late Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf as “the soldiers’ reporter” because of his caring and regard for those whose battles he covered.

Library offers Curtis-Egan tour at Whatcom Museum On Monday, April 27, the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham and the Lopez Library collaborate to bring patrons a gorgeous and unique evening. Whatcom Museum is currently hosting “Mingled Visions: Images from the North American Indian” by Edward S. Curtis, an exhibit of 40 of Curtis’ photogravures (Feb.7 through May 10). This magnificent traveling exhibit is organized by the Dubuque Museum of Art, in Iowa and a tremendous offering

from Whatcom Museum which is a favorite destination for Lopez Islanders. The exhibit includes one of Curtis’ earliest images taken in 1895 of Princess Angeline, the eldest daughter of Chief Sealth. The portrait won the top prize in a photographic contest and helped launch his career and his mission to document the vanishing heritage of Native American people. The Lopez Library has arranged a dedicated Lopez community docent-guided tour of the photos

from 3-5 p.m. on April 27 in the Curtis Gallery, $5 cash at the door, Curtis Exhibit only. This date is significant as the tour is then followed by Pulitzer Prize winner Timothy Egan at 7 p.m., Mt. Baker Theater. The event is free. Egan will discuss the Curtis images and his book “Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: the Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis.” Mt. Baker Theater is a short stroll from the Whatcom Museum with time in

between the docent tour and the lecture for coffee, a glass of wine or dinner. Reservations for the Lopez docent-guided tour are requested to assist with docent assignment and can be made through Jen Krajack, Lopez Library Program Coordinator (468-2265) or through any of the Lopez Library staff. Whatcom Museum is located at 121 Prospect St., Bellingham, WA. The tour is limited to 40 people. No transportation or lodging provided by the Lopez Library.
