Amid near perfect weather, the 2015 Seahawks 12k at The Landing went off without a hitch Sunday, as 12,000 runners took to Renton city streets. “This is the sixth annual Seahawks 12k Run at The Landing,” said George Searing, operations coordinator for the race. “We feel great as the event has continued to grow and bring large crowds to The Landing as well as the City of Renton in general.” Thousands of people congregated in the parking lot of The Landing and LA Fitness at the start of the 12k. There were three courses for fans of all ages to participate. Runners, walkers and even pets came decked out in Seahawks’ fan gear, some running in their costumes. Gerry Ebalaroza Tunnell, of Bothell, participates every year. This year she did the GLOW 5k Run/Walk donning a green hula skirt, Seahawks shirt and hat with fuzzy tassels, while friend Kalani Codenys walked in a blue tutu, added to her Seahawks’ outfit. “Our family does it,” said Codenys, of Tacoma. “It’s a thing we do for health reasons on top of the fact that we’re huge Seahawks fans.”

A three-alarm fire Sunday afternoon that resulted in $1.3 million damage to a condominium complex was caused by a cigarette tossed into a planter containing peat moss, according to the Renton fire department. No firefighters or residents were injured in the fire at the Riverview Condominiums on the Maple Valley Highway at about 2:15 p.m., although pets were rescued. Arriving fire crews searched for occupants. The fire was ruled accidental, according Erik Wallgren, deputy fire chief for the Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department. The City of Renton will host a community meeting Saturday for the residents of the condominium complex to provide information on the fire investigation process, how to request copies of the reports through public disclosure, and general [ more FIRE page 4 ]

McKnight students get lesson in rowing BY TRACEY COMPTON tcompton@rentonreporter.com

Students at McKnight Middle School got to try their hands at indoor rowing last week as part of the Renton Rowing Center and George Pocock Foundation’s “Erg™ Ed” week. The school is piloting the program, which connects kids to the sport of rowing, teaches basic rowing skills and safety on the rowing machine. The George Pocock Foundation has been running the education program in Seattle schools since 2010. “We’re really excited for this program to potentially lead kids to the community to learn a new and different sport,” said Karla Landis, deputy director of the George Pocock Foundation. Twenty ergometers or indoor rowing machines were delivered to the school for the students to use. “When they saw the ergs in our gym, their eyes - it was sort of like Christmas morning when you see all the presents out,” said Mary

he really hadn’t considered the sport before this week in gym class, but now might think about taking up rowing outside of school. “The goal is to bring rowing into a P.E. curriculum and mainstream it,” said Landis. “The second (goal) is to use this as a vehicle to

The week finished with a team challenge that emphasized working with peers and strategizing how to maximize time on the machine. “I think it’s great to have this partnership with the Pocock Foundation and the idea of bringing this resource in for our kids, giving them a chance to try a skill exposes them to something that is a lifelong skill that they can try here and think about beyond middle school and beyond high school,” said Craig Cooper, McKnight principal. 2015 Ahead of the Class Awards honors five teachers FROM A PRESS RELEASE::

A three-alarm fire Sunday afternoon at the Riverview Condominiums on the Maple Valley Highway caused an estimated $1.3 million in damage. ARIANA ROWE, Renton Fire Department Facebook questions and answers. The community meeting starts at 10 a.m. at the New Life Church, 15711 152nd Ave. S.E., Renton. The fire started on the second-floor deck, moved up the siding to the soffit and entered the unprotected soffit framing through bird blocking, according to Wallgren. The condominiums had sprinklers but not the attic,

according to Wallgren. “The fire spread through the complicated roof truss structure, burning the roof off the building, Wallgren said in a press release. The planter also contained vermiculite and potting soil. The building is a total loss, with damage initially estimated at $1 million to the building and $300,000 to contents, according to Wallgren.

Saturday, May 2nd 2:30 pm and 7:00 pm Sunday, May 3rd 1:30 pm

The Red Cross was at the complex to help about a dozen displaced residents find temporary housing. All six Renton fire department engines responded to the fire at 2:15 p.m. When firefighters arrived, less than seven and a half minutes later, there were flames shooting into the sky from the eight-unit, two-story condo building, according to Wallgren. The flames extended on two sides of the building and into the attic. Wallgren offered a special thank you to the city’s partners across the region who also responded. Auburn, Kent and Bellevue sent ladder trucks. Crews from Maple Valley, Skyway and Tukwila provided aid at the scene. Other agencies provided personnel to staff Renton’s stations and respond to other calls throughout the city during the four hours it took to extinguish the fire, according to Wallgren. Renton Police provided security and traffic control in the development.

Dollar store burglar blames hunger on being booted from dinner The following information was compiled from Renton Police Department case reports. BY DEAN A. RADFORD dradford@rentonreporter.com

A 22-year-old Renton man known to officers was chased down in Liberty Park after shoplifting at the Dollar Tree store on Bronson Way – and flashing a knife to an employee outside the store who tried to stop him. The suspect threw the knife to the ground after a Renton Police officer caught up with him when be became trapped by the chain-link fence around the new library under construction. The officer recovered English toffee bars, a butane lighter, tiramisu cake and a Sparkling Ice beverage. The suspect is known to shoplift at the store. He had a bulge in his pants when he walked out and ignored the employee’s plea that he pay for the items. The employee didn’t follow the suspect because he feared for his life. The suspect told officers he was hungry because the Salvation Army didn’t feed him and he was asked to leave. He denied threatening the Dollar Store employee with a knife, which had fallen out because of the

food stuffed in his coat pocket. He was booked into the King County Jail March 30 for investigation of robbery and for obstructing a law enforcement officer. He also had a warrant for second-degree attempted theft. NOT ACTUALLY FUNNY: A 29-yearold Renton man called 911 for help April 5 because he was high on PCP, had hit a pole while exiting I-405 and didn’t know his name. The problem is, none of that was true. He just thought it was “funny” to make a false report to police. Two Renton Police officers and two state troopers weren’t amused. Renton officers spotted his 2015 black Camaro in the drive-through at McDonalds on Northeast Fourth Street. After the man got his food, an officer stepped in front of the Camaro so he wouldn’t drive off and possibly hurt someone. Instead, the man hit the gas like he was going to hit the officer, who jumped out of the way. He did stop, though. He wasn’t on PCP and there was no damage to his car. But he said that all police officers were corrupt and deserved responding to a fake call. He eventually apologized and was cited

for false reporting. ABUSE AT HOMELESS CAMP: A 39-year-old homeless woman reported to police April 5 that her husband punched her in the face and body at their homeless camp off Naches Avenue Southwest. The husband apparently was angry because she had taken money from his account. He also tried to choke her. The victim initially gave her report to officers outside Fred Meyer on Rainier Avenue. Her husband tried several time to reach her by phone. Fearful, she was reluctant to take officers to the tent but was assured she would be escorted in and out. Officers were having difficulty finding the camp. The husband was found sleeping in a tent halfway up a steep hill. He claimed his wife assaulted him but no injuries were visible. She got hurt when she hit a tree leaving camp, he said. The husband was booked into the SCORE regional jail for investigation of fourth-degree assault, domestic violence. The victim wanted to return to the camp. TOO CLUCKING LOUD: How long must hens go cluck, cluck, cluck before their owner is cited for having too many

Perez announces plans to run for re-election BY BRIAN BECKLEY bbeckley@rentonreporter.com

As we move slowly closer to the filing deadline for this year’s elections, one more councilmember has announced her plans to run for re-election this year. Ruth Perez this week announced she will run in November to hold on to the seat through 2017. Perez was selected in December by the council to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Terri Briere, but by law must face election to maintain the seat through the remainder of the term. “Now, I’m hitting the streets, knocking on doors and talking with business leaders all over our growing city – as I am determined to win the voters approval just as I succeeded in winning my City Council colleagues support,” she said in a press release announcing her intentions. Perez, 46, was born in Mexico City and has lived in Renton since 2007. She has a bachelor’s degree in communications and a Masters of Business Administration and has worked as a magazine editor, a production coordinator for television and as a cultural liaison and local media coordinator for the Washington State Department of Trade and Economic Development. Perez currently serves, since 2009, as chief administrative officer of Checkerboard Consulting Services, a Rentonbased business consulting firm. Prior to that, Perez worked at the Mexican Consulate in Seattle as director of the Program for Mexican Communities Abroad. As a councilmember, she serves as chair of the Community Services Committee. “Both as a journalist and as a trade facilitator, I have

learned the art of listening, getting the facts and asking the right questions – the same priorities for serving in office,” she said. “And I love this place – Renton is the heart of the working people of the state and it is a privilege to serve its families.” Perez said her priorities were “not new” but touted a fresh approach to issues such as transportation funding. Ruth Perez Perez is the second councilmember to announce their intentions to run for re-election this fall, joining Don Persson. In total, five council seats will be up for election as Marcie Palmer, Ed Prince and Greg Taylor are reaching the end of their terms. Mayor Denis Law is also running for re-election. Candidate filing week is May 16-19. For more information on filing to run for office, visit www.sos.wa.gov.

noisy animals inside the city? For one Renton Police officer it was about an hour. The clucking started quietly at about 6:55 a.m. on April 2, but by 7 one of the hen’s clucks were audible out on the street. Then silence, then more loud cackling that went on for the better part of an hour. “The cackling was loud enough to be annoying and would be enough to cause someone to have a valid complaint,” the officer wrote. City code allows for a $250 fine. The officer had been there before because of a noisy rooster. The officer told the owner to downsize the flock, starting with the dominant hens. She had already started that, after another officer visited in late March following a complaint and earlier code violations. She had 23 chickens then; Renton’s codes allow for nine chickens. The situation on Northeast Second Place will be re-evaluated later this month.

A primary quadrennial quandary You know the quadrennial quandary in this state about how to make the presidential primary meaningful? There’s an answer for 2016: It won’t be, so it’s going to be canceled. That will mean the vast majority of Washington’s 3.9 million registered voters won’t have a hand in narrowing the field of presidential candidates. On the bright side, canceling the primary will save taxpayers $11.5 million. You can thank the state Democratic Party for clarifying the options and freeing up those millions of dollars for other uses. On April 18, its leaders gathered in Pasco and decided to rely solely on precinct caucuses to apportion delegates to the national convention, where the party’s nominee for the Oval Office will be chosen. That’s no surprise. Democrats cherish the caucus process to bring their truly faithful together. “It encourages more active participation, with Democrats across the state showing up to caucuses and talking with their friends and neighbors about our presidential candidates,” state party chairman Jaxon Ravens said in a statement. But Secretary of State Kim Wyman did try to persuade them otherwise. Wyman, the state’s chief election officers, wrote party members a letter April 15 asking them to allot a portion of delegates based on primary results, a practice that the Democratic Party does in more than 30 other states. She said if Democrats found a way to do that, she’d get lawmakers to move up the date of the primary and make sure the Democratic and Republican parties got the names of every one who voted for their respective candidates. “Our goals with this proposal are to engage as many voters across the state in the selection of the presidential nominees as possible, make the results of a presidential primary meaningful and respect the political parties’ rights of association in the process,” she wrote. Wyman, a Republican, made the same pitch to her own party, but it wasn’t a hard sell. The GOP had already pledged to allocate half its delegates in that manner. In getting Democrats on board, too, Wyman wanted to give meaning to a primary inspired by voters and created by lawmakers in 1989. The problem is the po[ more CORNFIELD page 7 ]

Numbers don’t tell nonprofits’ stories, but faces, changed lives do Like most businesses, nonprofits typically measure their success in numbers. How many clients do they serve? How many pounds of food do they move? How many volunteer hours do they log? And yet, the real impact is far greater than what can be measured in mere numbers. Consider the Renton Kiwanis Clothes Bank. For grant purposes, they report the number of families they serve. And it’s impressive – 300 to 400 families a month. But dig deeper and you’ll hear stories of men and women able to find professional clothes needed for a job interview, thereby giving them a fighting chance at lifting themselves out of poverty. Children are given clean socks and underwear, or clothes without rips and tears, lifting their spirits and allowing them to fit in with their peers at school. Consider the Renton History Museum. They might measure their success by the number of individuals who visit the museum each year. Or perhaps by the number of new exhibits they stage. But their real impact is the stories they tell about Renton’s past and how that might impact our future. They collect, catalogue and preserve our memories and then feed that information back to us in the form of visual images, allowing us to relive and remember where we came from, so that we might know where we’re going. Consider Communities In Schools of Renton, which I’m sure counts the number of children who pass through the hands of their community liaisons and mentors and whether those children graduate. But the way in which they change lives is dramatic, because instead of dropping out of school and struggling to get by for the rest of their lives, these kids graduate. Many go on to college, giving them the tools with which to create a bright and productive future. Consider Birthday Dreams. They have provided more than 2,900 birthday parties for homeless kids in just the past few years. But their story isn’t in the number; it’s in the smiles on children’s faces whose lives have been uprooted. Kids impacted this way feel different than all of their friends. Sometimes, something as simple as a birthday party can make them feel normal again. Consider Renton Area Youth & Family Services. They also count the number of young people they help with alcohol and drug counseling. But the difference they make is sometimes between darkness and light. The RAYS staff can bring a child back from the brink of suicide or addiction to a path that leads them forward, thereby impacting not only the child but the family that fears they might lose that child. Consider Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank or St. Vincent de Paul/Renton. Both provide food to lower income people. While it’s worthy to count the number of families they serve, and/or the number of pounds of food they hand out, it doesn’t begin to measure the important service they provide. They reduce the stress of not knowing where the next meal will come from, and frankly, keep people alive. Now, consider the many arts organizations that not only provide an outlet for people’s creative sides, but entertain and inspire the rest of us to live a richer, fuller life. Renton CROP Walk is May 3 dradford@rentonreporter.com

The 32nd Renton CROP Hunger Walk is Sunday, May 3, to raise money to help feed the hungry. Renton CROP walks have raised more than $574,000 to help the hungry worldwide, with more than $143,000 going to Renton food agencies, according to local organizer Sharon Kenyon. “Last year for the sixth time, Renton was in the top 100 walks, which is pretty great considering there are more than 2,000 communities in the U.S. supporting CROP

This year, Wyman crafted legislation that covered the offer she made the two parties. And she said that absent their agreement, there’s no point in holding a presidential primary. “I can’t support $11.5 million being spent on a beauty contest that means nothing to the parties,” Wyman said Monday in a public hearing on the bill in front of the House Appropriations Committee. Rep. Ross Hunter, D-Medina, the committee chairman, proposed changes Monday to require that both parties allot at least 75 percent of their delegates based on the primary results. It was a somewhat

And finally, consider the Budkis Fund, which provides financial support to seniors faced with huge veterinary bills, sometimes forcing them to make a decision as to whether to give up their only living companion. Gov. Inslee has declared April 2015 as “Nonprofit Impact” month. The nonprofits that serve Renton are far too many to name here, as is the power of

Registration is 1 p.m.1:25 p.m. Participants can sign up with a church or organization, online as a team or individual or at the walk. Anyone under 18 needs a parent’s signature. cynical move, given his party’s decision days earlier. “I would like to hold out hope they would come to the decision that people who are disenfranchised by the caucus, who work on Saturdays, people who have children and cannot make the caucus, should still be able to vote and help select the most important person in the known universe,” Hunter said. Lawmakers must still pass a bill to formally cancel the 2016 primary. Then it will be another four years before they face this quandary again. I would like to add plants to a shaded area that will have flowers in the summer. I prefer plants that do not need replanting. Please suggest some perennial plants for the shade. J.Email Hostas are the queen of the darkness when it comes to shade-loving perennials but a new perennial is climbing the rungs of the popularity ladder so look for beautiful brunnera plants this month at area nurseries. Brunnera has large colorful leaves much like a hosta but is more slug and deer resistant. Brunnera also displays sky blue blossoms on airy stems in the spring and a neat and tidy growing habit. Like hosta, the brunnera will look best in a shaded spot that has rich soil amended with compost and the plants will look their best if kept moist the first summer as they build a root system. Other perennials that will grow in the shade are lamiums, primroses, corydalis, saxifrage and bleeding heart. The last week of April is a busy time for planting vegetables. You can plant seeds of cool season crops such as beets, radish, lettuce, kale, cabbage and onions this week and add pre grown vegetable starts of leaf crops such as lettuce as well. 1. What are allergies? Allergies are abnormal immune system reactions to things that are usually harmless to most people. Substances that cause allergic reactions, such as certain foods, dust, plant pollen, or medicines, are known as allergens. When these allergens enter the nose, sinuses, and lungs, the body’s immune system can overreact to these particles and release chemicals like histamine and leukotriene which cause an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions can be mild, like a runny nose, or severe. In rare cases, an allergic reaction can become very severe — this severe reaction is called anaphylaxis (pronounced: an-uh-fuh-LAK-sis). Signs of anaphylaxis include difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat or other parts of the body, and dizziness or loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis usually occurs within minutes of exposure, but can be delayed for as long as four hours. Treatment involves an immediate dose of epinephrine, which should be carried at all times by people with a history of severe or anaphylactic allergic reactions. 2. What causes allergies?

are highest from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Try to plan outdoor activities for the afternoon. Changing your clothes and taking a shower after being outdoors can also help. For dust mites, wash all bedding once a week in hot water. Buy bedding with synthetic materials instead of wool or feathers, and use dust-proof covers on your mattresses and pillows. Vacuum twice a week and wear a mask and gloves when cleaning. For mold and mildew, try to keep the humidity in your home lower than 50% by using a dehumidifier. Avoid having indoor plants, as wet soil encourages mold growth. Don’t leave wet clothes in the washer and don’t leave wet towels lying around. For pet dander, keep your pet outdoors as much as possible. If you must keep your pets indoors, do not allow them in the bedroom, wash hands frequently after handling pets and bathe them at least weekly. Cat dander can stay airborne for up to 24 hours. 5. What treatments are available? Treatment depends on your symptoms. Keep in mind that often the symptoms of allergies can only be controlled, not cured. Medications — there are a number of medications which can help decrease allergy symptoms. Some medications are available over the counter, while others require a prescription. Antihistamines

For the Renton Reporter

The most common causes of allergies are pollen and dust mites. Pollen is an outdoor airborne allergen that causes seasonal allergies, or hay fever. Dust mites are tiny creatures that live on bedding, couches, and rugs. Other common causes include pet dander (cats > dogs), mold and mildew, cigarette smoke, and cockroaches. If you have a family member with allergies, you are more likely to develop allergies as well. 3. How are allergies diagnosed? If you experience allergic symptoms lasting longer than a week or two, or which cause difficulties in your daily life, you may benefit from evaluation and management by your doctor. Most often, allergies are diagnosed based on symptoms. If further testing is necessary, skin testing can be done. This involves pricking your skin with a variety of different allergens and seeing if your immune system reacts by causing a red, itchy bump on your skin like a mosquito bite. A blood test is also available. Neither of these tests is perfect, and your doctor will use the results in combination with your symptoms to help you find the best options for treatment. 4. What can I do to avoid allergies? For seasonal allergies, keep in mind that peak pollen season is from August to November and that pollen amounts

stop your immune system from reacting to the allergen and causing symptoms. Some examples are oral antihistamines; antihistamine nose sprays; and antihistamine eye drops. Decongestants help to reduce swelling of blood vessels and tissues. Steroids reduce overall inflammation. Examples include steroid prescription nasal sprays. Other medications used for allergies include leukotriene inhibitors and antiinflammatory eye drops. Speak with your doctor about which medications are right for you. When lifestyle changes and medications aren’t enough, allergy shots or immunotherapy are an option. Allergy shots are injections of small amounts of the specific allergen that you are allergic to. Over time, these shots can “train” your body not to respond so strongly to the allergen. These shots are managed by an Allergist and are given on a schedule; usually you will start with 2-3 shots a week and can space these out over 3-5 years. Brown family to host Community Family Reunion Alajawan’s Fourth Annual Community Family Reunion is 6:01 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in Skyway. The reunion marks the date and exact time in 2010 that 12-year-old Alajawan Brown was killed by a gunshot wound to the back in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven store on Martin Luther King Jr. Way on West Hill. His killer, Curtis John Walker, was sentenced at age 36 to 50 years in prison in March 2012. Alajawan’s parents, Ayanna and Louis, have put on the reunion for the community. This year the reunion is at Grocery Outlet, 11656 68th

Ave. S., on West Hill. There will be free food, music and raffles. Shirts are available online (www.booster.com/Alajawansreunion) to help raise donations for the Alajawan Brown Foundation (www.alajawanshands.com) that helps children with backpacks, school supplies and athletic scholarships. For more information contact Ayanna Brown at 425208-6236.

Clothing bank receives donation The owners of Renton’s Cedar River Cellars recently presented the Renton Kiwanis Clothes Bank with a donation of nearly $600 and along with new and gently used clothing. Heather and Micah Nasarow, of Cedar River Cellars, presented a check to Susan Bressler, president of the clothing bank, earlier this month.

Pampered Pets...

What can be done about digging dogs? BY KATHY LANG Family Dog Training Center

Spring is here. Your freshly planted annuals look great. You go into the house to wash up. A few minutes later Fido paws at the door to come inside and his feet are covered in fresh dirt. You rush past him to see an enormous hole where your pansies once stood. What can be done about digging dogs? It’s true. Some dogs will dig to imitate their owners. For a few families eliminating the digging is as simple are keeping the dog out of view during planting and weed-pulling periods. For most pet owners, though, digging can be more problematic. Dogs dig for several reasons, including: imitation; physical and mental boredom; genetics (terriers were bred to dig); access to something desirable (another dog on the other side of the fence or inside the house with you); interesting or exciting stuff in the dirt (cat poop, moles, etc.); cool or warmth (depending ambient temperature). The first way to deal with digging is determine the reason the dog digs. If you own a terrier, the easiest solution may be to give the dog a specific place to play in the dirt. If your dog is digging randomly around the yard, is he going after something or is he just bored? Think prevention, redirection and exercise. If Fido’s holes are next to the fence or the house, he may be trying to escape the yard. Figure out why to truly fix the problem. You can prevent a dog from digging in a certain areas with standard or invisible-type fences. A

Expecting a baby? Family Dog Training Center

Are you expecting? Do you know someone who is? Whether you’re a future parent, grandparent or good friend, bringing a baby into a household with dogs requires some planning and preparation. If you’re the parent, or anticipate caring for the baby on a regular basis, think through your daily routine as it relates to the resident canine. What will Fido’s role be when the baby is sleeping, eating, playing and fussing? Does Fido know how to go to a spot (such as a blanket, rug, towel or crate) and stay there until released? Any issues with separation anxiety or destructive behavior need to be

resolved before the baby arrives. Aggression or resource guarding of toys or food are serious issues that must be corrected and may require the help of a professional. As soon as the pregnancy is confirmed, buy or borrow some of the basic baby necessities, along with a baby doll, to rehearse your routine and accustom Fido to the sights, smells, sounds

and activities associated with a newborn. Be proactive and give your dog little jobs to do as you go about your baby tasks. Practice controlled walking next to a stroller. Practice sit and down stays during diaper changing. Train your dog to go to his rug or crate for a special treat when the baby needs your undivided attention. Consider adding a second rug or crate in the baby’s room or another spot in the house where you

anticipate spending a lot of time. If your dog thinks he’s top dog in your household and is not reliable with basic obedience commands and manners, start a training program. A regular training and exercise schedule will help your dog feel comfortable and included when the baby arrives. Always use caution when allowing dogs to interact with babies. Supervision is the key to healthy, happy and safe interactions.

terrent, while others only find success after months of spying on their dogs and catching them in the act. Figure out why your dog digs. Then apply the principles of prevention and redirection, along with additional mental and physical stimulation until your dog understand “No Holes Allowed!”

What is periodontal disease?

Over 85% of dogs and cats have some type of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease simply means that the gums and bone that hold the teeth in place are being destroyed by oral bacteria. This preventable disease is the number one diagnosed disease in our pets, yet many animals suffer needlessly. Periodontal disease begins with gingivitis, or inflammation of the gum tissue, which is caused by plaque. Plaque is a mixture of saliva, bacteria, glycoproteins and sugars that adhere to the tooth surface. Within minutes after a cleaning, a thin layer of plaque has adhered to the teeth. Eventually this hardens to become calculus or tartar. Calculus by itself is nonpathogenic - it does not cause disease. However, it does create a rough surface for more plaque to adhere to, and pushes the gums away from the teeth, which increases surface area for more plaque to adhere. Eventually, the supporting structures of the tooth (bone, tissue, periodontal ligament) are destroyed and the tooth becomes mobile and will either fall out on its own or need to be extracted. Signs of periodontal disease are bad breath (halitosis), reluctancy to eat, chewing on one side of the mouth, dropping food, pawing at the face or rubbing the face on the floor, drooling, becoming head shy, and painful mouth/face. Veterinarians recommend the following care for pets: Bring your pet in for a dental exam. Don’t wait for his STEP 1: Bring annual checkup if you suspect a problem. Begin a dental care regimen at home. Brushing your STEP 2: Begin pet’s teeth daily is very important. We also recommend using a specially formulated dental rinse, and dental chews and food. Please ask us if you need instructions on brushing your pet’s teeth, or if you have any other questions. Schedule your pets for an annual teeth cleaning with STEP 3: Schedule x-rays. This is also very important and ensures we are catching any disease early enough to treat. Periodontal disease and oral bacteria can easily affect other organ systems including the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs and brain. 1278973

clearly defined boundary and daily reinforcement training on a leash or long line can help a dog understand to stay out of your vegetable garden. Sometimes a section of chicken wire placed on top of the grass or dirt where the dog likes to dig is enough of a deterrent. Some owners have success with a thick layer of black pepper as a de-

“We just did the Chicago Marathon in October, but this race is so much more fun just because of all the fans out here,” said Fennell. “All the camaraderie amongst everyone is awesome.” It was Dickman’s third time doing the race. “It was awesome, great run,” she said. “(I) did the very first one that they ever had, so it was fun to come back and do it again.” All of the 12k and 5k participants received medals for their effort. The top three female finishers of the 12k were Janet McDevitt (45:17.6), Lauren Breihof (47:41) and Shelly Hack (50:37.2). The top male finishers of the 12k were Matthew McClement (39:27.7), Erik Barkhaus (39:52.1) and Shaun Frandsen (41:05.8). They all received Seahawks special prizes. The most cleverly clad participants also received awards, with Maggie Clayton, of Columbia City, Ore., and her dog Winchester, taking home first place. Q.

I have earwigs and sow bugs that are eating the petals of my pansies and also damaging vegetable seedlings. How can I control these pests without resorting to chemicals or poisons? O.G., Enumclaw

A.

You hold the answer in your hands if you’re reading a newspaper. Crumble up a wad of damp newspaper, hide a bit of potato or ripe fruit inside the folds of the paper and place this harmless trap near the damaged plants. Damp newspaper will lure earwigs, sow bugs and as a bonus, slugs and snails that all seek the cool dampness of the paper once the sun rises. In the morning collect the paper wads and you’ll find the guilty plant nibblers inside the paper.
