Senate education bill could increase Redmond property taxes TJ MARTINELL tmartinell@kirklandreporter.com
Property owners in the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) may see the amount they pay in property taxes increase under proposed legislation in-
tended to shift funding for basic education costs away from local levies and back to state property taxes. Under Republicanbacked Senate Bill 6109, the state would lower local school district levy taxes by capping them at $1.25 per
$1,000 of assessed value, while increasing the state’s common school levy from $1.98 per $1,000 to $3.60 per $1,000 of assessed value, a $1.62 increase. The current levy rate for LWSD is $1.45 per $1,000 of assessed value, accord-
ing to LWSD Spokesperson Kathryn Reith. The median sales price for a home in Redmond this year is $487,500, according to trulia.com. Meanwhile, the Democrats have introduced Senate Bill 6102, which
would pay for local levy reductions with a yearly 7 percent state tax on capital gains of $250,000 for single taxpayers or $500,000 for couples. The proposal would raise an estimated $1.2 billion in the next two years.
Washington State Treasurer Jim McIntire stepped forward with another option to fund schools through a state income tax, although many are against the idea, including Gov. Jay Inslee. [ more BILL page 6 ]

Eye-opening experience in Cuba Redmond High students, teachers and parents interact with Havana locals on educational trip ANDY NYSTROM anystrom@redmond-reporter.com
Relations between the United States and Cuba have generated top news stories recently, with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo visiting the Communist island nation on a trade mission, President Barack Obama removing Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and lawmakers pushing to
end the 54-year-old trade embargo. Earlier this month, a group of 24 Redmond High School (RHS) students, four teachers and six parents traveled to Cuba, as well, and interacted with the citizens of Havana and visited schools, arts and music centers, the only English bookstore/salon in Cuba and agricultural/organic farms. The travelers — who paid for the trip themselves — flew out of Seattle on April 3, stayed one night in Miami and spent April 5-12 in a Havana hotel. They arranged the trip through student-travel organization Explorica, which obtained Visas and registered the trip with the United States government. The group’s activities had to be approved and two tour guides were on
hand, one from Cuba and one from the United States, the latter which took notes and made sure the group stuck to its plan. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, eyeopening experience, said junior Olivia Lang, who was impressed with the culture and how open and caring the people are. “At first, when I heard about the trip, I thought, ‘This is so cool,’ since everyone’s always told me I’m never going to go to Cuba, because it was this locked off (nation). There was an embargo, a ‘wall’ up,” Lang said. “I got to see that they have so much life and soul in them, and their political situation with the Communist government [ more CUBA page 7 ]

A day after Rosemary O’Connell completed her first Boston Marathon, she was sore and walking slow. The longtime Redmond resident was also elated to have finished the 26.2mile race on Monday and proud to be part of team MR8 that ran in honor of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old who was killed in the 2013 marathon bombings. At press time, the 77-member team had raised $756,000 for the MR8 Charitable Foundation, which promotes education, athletics and
community. O’Connell, 55, has raised $5,860 herself. “It was very emotional crossing the finish line, thinking of Martin and all the victims and their families,” O’Connell said. “The crowd was very supportive of the MR8 Team and I thought of all the people who supported me to get me through.” Added Brianna May, O’Connell’s 24-year-old daughter: “I am so proud of her efforts preparing for and racing this marathon. She ran with so much heart, as did all the Boston finishers.” [ more BOSTON page 6 ]

Save the historical Nokomis building
I am a longtime resident of the city of Redmond. My family has called the greater Redmond area home for more than 100 years. The growth that I have seen in the last 50 years has been positively mind boggling with the change from a sleepy little town of 500 populated mostly by farmers and loggers, to a bedroom community for Boeing and finally to a center of high-tech businesses that have a worldwide reach. I have long watched this growth and seen some of the pains associated with it, but generally have accepted it as the price of progress. However the story of the Nokomis Club building has touched me through to my core. If you do a little Internet research, you will discover that the Nokomis Club was truly ahead of its time. Up through the early 1960s, Redmond had its own library as the King County Library System had not yet moved into town. Due to that, the city was responsible for funding and maintaining a library. The Nokomis Club was quite involved in providing financial support for the library in the early days. My grandmother, Jessie Adams Norman, was a school teacher and was active in Nokomis and was one of the wonderful women that helped support our library in those days. As a youth, a visit to the library was always an event that I looked forward to as there were many different places I could visit just by reading the volumes contained within those walls. Currently, the Nokomis Club building is going to be demolished in order to make room for new construction in the area that surrounds the building. The contractor plans to use a small amount of the materials salvaged from the demolition in the construction of the planned new building, which hardly pays homage to the women who stepped up to provide a needed service to this community. Sadly, there is no interest at the highest levels of city government to do anything to prevent this building from being demolished. Please take a moment and visit this website to learn more about the Nokomis Club and its impact on the history of Redmond (http:// nokomisclub98052.org/library.html). This is the story of a group of forward-thinking women on a philanthropic mission to help our town. The Nokomis Club is a part of my heritage and a very important part of our city’s history. Let’s not allow this landmark to slip through our hands and be lost forever.

Working together to keep Redmond green
Last week’s guest column by Forterra staff members Norah Kates and Carrie Hawthorne was truly appropriate as we celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day. The observation that “a nearby park is an oasis of calm and a place to recharge”....perhaps “the only place where many urban dwellers connect with the natural world” is particularly on point. The column further stated that “More and more studies emphasize the importance of nature to peoples’ health and well-being. Just being outside under tree cover has proven to reduce stress and improve creativity, memory and cognitive function. As our cities rapidly grow, our few natural refuges are all the more critical.” We at Sustainable Redmond could
not agree more and have testified to this effect since November 2011 when 100 percent of the trees at Overlake’s Group Health campus were approved for removal during redevelopment of the site. In the context of Redmond’s Climate Action Plan, a very informative report was presented to our City Council on April 14. It outlined the extent of Redmond’s tree canopy, ways that it can be measured, tree-protection regulations and the role of Green Redmond in restoring and preserving our natural resources. Two years earlier (April 2, 2013), Sustainable Redmond delivered to the council a very detailed examination of tree retention data that suggested city staff waivers of tree-protection provisions contained in planning documents and code provisions were granted routinely. This intern-based research project supported our futile recommendations to amend and strengthen those documents and strongly advocated use of tree canopy metrics as a critical indicator tracking natural resource trends and the environmental services trees provide to our community. On the occasion of Earth and Arbor days, it is gratifying to see the city’s use of new LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to quantify Redmond’s touted green reputation and standing as a Tree City. Although we may have some quibbles with specific pieces of the tree canopy data, such as lumping the Watershed Preserve and Farrel-McWhirter Park into “urban forest” calculations with attendant skewing of figures, we welcome the new visibility brought to this issue and hope that tree canopy will finally be incorporated into Redmond’s Community Indicators as relevant “dashboard” information. The broader community has several chances to make a difference in our parks or urban forest over the next month. Green Redmond has two volunteer parties scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow at both Westside Park and Meadow Park. All are welcome to pitch in. Further, as the Parks, Arts, Recreation, Culture and Conservation (PARCC) Plan is updated through three open houses in May, these are chances for the public to make known their natural resource values in general and tree retention strategies in particular. Citizen surveys, budget polling and the possible levy all place a high priority on our urban forests and parks; a cause that Sustainable Redmond has advocated since its inception. We believe that our residents and employees will reinforce tree-protection priorities whenever opportunities are presented as we work together to keep Redmond green.
Tom Hinman, Sustainable Redmond
Cyclist questions comments in safety article Regarding last issue’s article, “How cyclists and drivers can safely share Redmond roads, trails,” Peter Dane and Carolyn Hope made the statement that there have been no issues with the Redmond Central Connector (RCC) since 2013 is misleading. The current RCC is a small piece that winds through residential streets near Redmond Town Center. There are stop signs, roundabouts, etc. There are no major crossings. The RCC goes under Redmond Way. Willows Road is a very different story. It is 45 mph and the trail will be hidden from motorists. There are main crossings at Northeast 90th and 95th streets (near the Black Raven Brewing Company), Arena Sports and Northeast 100th Court (Overlake Christian Church). They both admitted in the article that right turns is the major cause of accidents between bikes and cars yet they insist there will be on issues. This design contradicts all the findings of Target Zero (http://www.targetzero.com ). If the proposed solution of having “sweeping curves” to slow down and alert riders who are commuting to work makes such great sense why aren’t roads designed that way through school zones? Why is the burden on the cyclist, commuting to work and taking a car off the road, to “be safe” and not on the engineering team to “make it safe”? I understand we want a solution to get cyclists to the DigiPen area. Another solution might be to improve the trail along side the river and improve the Puget Power Trail, which intersects with Willows Road. In addition, how will Willows Road ever be widened if that trail is put in?

I am so thankful that we met a little over a year ago at my Eastside Moms’ Group. After hearing Dr. Chelsea and you speak, I was very excited to be learning about the natural home remedies we can do for ourselves and our children before we need antibiotics. At this time, my 5-year-old daughter was struggling to sleep at night. She had been very anxious at night for the past three months had been sleeping on the floor in our room. I had tried all kinds of things from bribing her to being very firm with her to using Benadryl to get her back to her own bed. None of these things worked. When I spoke with Dr. Moe and Dr. Chelsea about the possibility of chiropractic care helping her, I was thrilled at the possibility of this working. Dr. Moe explained that the kind of chiropractic care he gave. After one week, my little girl started to sleep in her own room and her anxiety lessened until it disappeared completely a couple of months later. I truly believe it was the adjustment of the atlas and axis which allowed her nerves to function properly and for her to get the sleep she so badly needed. I started care at that time as well for some feminine issues and chronic headaches. I had tried everything to treat from acupuncture to living on Advil. My husband being a little skeptical joined in a few weeks later because
he tweaked his lower back so bad that even muscle relaxants would not help his pain. He found great relief after the first adjustment and by the third and fourth he was able to run for the first time in 14 years without lower back pain. We are a family changed by the amazing care we have received from Dr. Moe over the last year. Tree of Life truly lives up to their mission “to provide specific Redmond chiropractic care in an environment of love, compassion and clinical expertise. We aim to restore health and help our community members reach their God-given potential by helping them raise healthy families free of subluxation.” I think my referrals to my friends and family speak louder than any praise and honor I can give to you. I thank you for caring and making an impact on my family and your community. I would encourage anyone who has never been to Tree of Life Chiropractic to take advantage for the upcoming Patient Appreciation Day’s free initial visit April 30 (at 16563 Redmond Way) to see how they can benefit like my family did.

O’Connell, who finished the race in 4:24.13, was one of eight Redmond runners to tackle the 119th Boston Marathon on Monday. Martin’s mom, Denise, sent all the team members a photo of her son running his last race in a youth relay on marathon weekend in 2013. A note said, “Wishing you the same spirit on race day,” and it inspired the runners, many of whom wore the photo during the marathon. When O’Connell heard of the 2013 bombings, she vowed that if she qualified for the Boston Marathon, she would run for a char-

The marathon, to me, is a peaceful event where runners are on a personal journey,” she said. O’Connell is a lifelong runner who participated in three marathons in her 20s and qualified for the Boston event at the Portland Marathon last year. It was a tough run on Monday and the participants were faced with cold and rainy conditions and a headwind. Martin and the other victims and survivors in 2013

were often on O’Connell’s mind: “When I had pain, I thought of them,” she said. O’Connell, who works at several Swedish hospital locations, said her husband, three daughters and friends were supportive, inspiring and generous on the fundraising end. As far as training goes, O’Connell was a fixture on the Snoqualmie Valley Trail (“It’s a godsend for the long runs. It is a jewel in the trail system here,” she said) and ran hill repeats on the Tolt Pipeline trail off Avondale Road, which gave her strength to conquer Newton Hill/Heartbreak Hill at the Boston Marathon.

Darryln McDonough, 18, runs the 100- and 200-meter events for The Bear Creek School, but the Redmond resident upped her game with an ultralong-distance race at the Boston Marathon. She finished the race in 6:40.41 and was glad to be back on her home turf of Boston after moving to Redmond 10 years ago. She remembers attending the marathon as a youngster and watching along the fences and railings. “The first 13 miles were fantastic — I was running on adrenaline and soaking [ more BOSTON page 7 ] Hill stated that the initial draft of the bill would result in increased property taxes for property owners in LWSD, but added that they are working out the exact details, which may reduce any potential increase. The bill is currently in the Ways and Means Committee, which Hill chairs. “There are a lot of dials within it, and there are ways you can basically mitigate or change the way property taxes are collected between local levy and state property taxes,” Hill said. “There’s a lot of flexibility in there. Part of the legislative process is putting issues out there.” Hill believes the bill will help fix a 30-year problem of relying on local levies to fund basic education, which is illegal under state law but the state legislature has allowed. In 2012, the State Supreme Court ruled that the state legislature had failed to fulfill its paramount duty under the constitution to “make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders.” The court also said that the local levies could not be used to pay for basic education costs that should be funded by the state. “The Supreme Court was very clear that it was something that had to be fixed,” Hill said. “I signed onto it (SB6109) because I want to have the conversation…. This is solving a very longstanding problem. And this is part of governing and part of leading.” Although he said he doesn’t necessarily agree with everything in the bill, Hill said it’s a step in the right direction and contains provisions that will benefit teachers in the LWSD, such as an increase in teacher compensation to match the local cost of living.

They’re still so happy and they still have so much to give the world.” Added freshman Claire Lynch about what she learned from the Cuban people, especially the artists: “To be passionate about what you do and put your character into what you do, just to show who you are in as many ways as possible.” RHS group leader and Spanish teacher Jill Samppala visited Cuba in 2001 as a college student on an educational Visa. It was a memorable trip for her and she felt her students would benefit from a visit, which marked the 11th international educational trip that Samppala has led with either RHS or Redmond Junior High students along for the ride. Other trips were to Costa Rica six times and Europe four times. Samppala said the purpose of the people-topeople exchange was for her students to hear about the Cubans’ experiences, what their struggles are, what they enjoy and what they love. Students danced with them and asked them questions — it wasn’t a typical tourist trip where

Since there was no cell-phone service and no Internet connection where they were staying, Samppala smiles when she notes that dinners were special since everyone was talking to one another instead of peeking at their media devices. Junior Faylynn Busby enjoyed being accepted by the locals and being welcomed into people’s homes for dinner and conversa-
tion, both in Spanish and English. “I thought that was really amazing to open your house up to strangers,” said Busby of the 30-plus RHS crew that sat down for meals. Busby even brought home a vegetablebased soup recipe. “They seemed so happy to convey this information to me.” Sophomore Logan Warrnier was impressed with the group’s upbeat Cuban tour guide, who
always relayed detailed answers about the architecture and paintings they noticed on their way around Havana. Warriner also went on solo walks and chatted up the locals. “Most of them were just interested in music that we listen to here in America. They didn’t really care about the politics at all … just the culture and the music, what Seattle’s like,” Warriner said. From grand-scale build-
It was the first marathon for McDonough, a Bear Creek senior who also plays soccer and basketball at the local school, and she got the nod to run because one of her family members works for the Boston Athletic Association and gave her a time waiver. McDonough arrived
back home on Wednesday evening and was back in school on Thursday … “running on some caffeine,” she laughed. Like O’Connell, McDonough thought about the 2013 bombing victims and survivors while she ran the marathon and was motivated to finish for them, as well. She
said there was a two-year memorial the Wednesday before the race and flowers and signs dotted the course. “The Boston Strong mantra was everywhere,” said McDonough, who added that spectators were cheering for the runners the whole way. “The bombings had a big

benefit Cuba’s economy, she’s worried about what it could do to the nation’s culture. “When Westernized countries go into another country, it sort of ends up with a McDonald’s and a Starbucks everywhere and that’s not really what I hope people want to see from Cuba,” she said. “I hope they want to go there and see the original culture, see these people who are so welcoming and so excited for this. And I hope that they see them as they are rather than as what we make them with tourism.” For Samppala, stepping back onto Cuban soil not only took her back 14 years to her first trip there, but also gave her a glimpse into an improved Cuba. She is impressed by how resilient the Cubans are by persevering and pushing through hard times. “I’ve seen that Cuba is a changing country and that the people are slowly gaining more freedoms from what I saw when I was there in 2001,” she said. “They genuinely want to have an open relationship with the United States, because it’s only going to help their economy for them to be able to trade with us. They are open to change in their future.”

ing renovations to striking sunsets, senior Aedan Lynch soaked up everything he strolled across in Havana. “It feels like you’re walking in on the beginning of some huge process. You can walk around in Havana and see all these projects being done and you can see all these things being changed. It’s not like a construction site here in Redmond (with new apartments being built), you’re walking in on something a bit bigger,” he said. On the sunset front, Lynch said that when the sun hit the horizon at just the right angle, he and others could suddenly see the entire rainbow in the sky. The shades of blue especially stood out, colors that are usually found in an ocean. As she spoke with the locals each day, sophomore Paige Lui appreciated the way the Cubans are not focused on their individual matters, but how things affect the entire community. “(That) is something that I think that we should learn to think more like here in the U.S. How can we help other people advance, as well?” Lui said. While Lui feels that ending the embargo would

Calliope Games collaborates with best in field for new project HOLLY THORPE UW News Lab
Redmond-based gaming company Calliope Games recruited some of the most popular designers in the industry for its newest project, the Titan Series. The fate of the series, however, depends on the success of its current Kickstarter campaign, started by Calliope Games president and co-founder Ray Wehrs. The campaign, which has a goal
of $135,000, is scheduled to end May 30. As of April 22, the Kickstarter campaign had 789 backers and had raised $101,477 — 75 percent of the goal. If funded, nine games will be delivered over the course of three years. Each year, three new games by three different designers will be released. The list of 14 designers includes names like Richard Garfield, creator of games like

Magic: The Gathering and King of Tokyo. The goal, said Wehrs, is to grow the market. “These guys are typically building games for the core hobby gamers ... (and) they’re great games, but they’re also games that most people that are in the general populace are not going to play,” he said. “With the Titan Series we came to them and said, ‘We don’t want you to do what you typically do, we want you to design a game for everybody else.’” Calliope is what Wehrs described as a gateway game company. Gateway games are games that a hobby gamer (Wehrs refers to them as alphagamers) can use to introduce a non-gamer to board games. Simply put, they’re games that players at all levels of interest and skill can enjoy. Wehrs described Calliope as a family-owned, family-run business making games for families. [ more GAMES page 9 ]

“The general public doesn’t know about board games. When they think of games, they think about Monopoly, Scrabble, Jenga — titles that have been around forever,” he said. “And a lot of people are not interested in those style games and they don’t even know about the true experience of the current gaming market — what it actually has to offer.” Calliope Games was founded in 2009 by designer Jordan Weisman, Dawne Weisman and Wehrs after the success of WizKids, a New Jersey-based game company founded by Jordan. Wehrs had done sales for WizKids on the side while running an art gallery in Chicago. “I had no experience in the gaming industry, I didn’t even know the gaming industry existed,” Wehrs said. “During that time at WizKids, one of the things that I loved is that we would get mail and emails from parents and kids alike talking about the experiences that they would have and things that they learned and how they were able to overcome challenges like autism.” When WizKids was sold, it was these experiences that Wehrs took with him to Calliope. They went on to release multiple games, including Got ‘Em!, Ugh! and Double Double Dominoes. They also acquired the license for

said. “And today, we all get so busy that we don’t always have the opportunity to set the time aside to make that happen.” The goals of Calliope’s games, especially in the Titan Series, are pretty simple, according to Wehrs. The games must be playable by everyone: mom, dad and the kids, too. This means the game is neither too hard nor too simple, and can accommodate at least two to six players. This family-friendliness is a company standard, said Wehrs. “We didn’t want to be building games that mom and dad wanted to play but had to

Although many boxes suggest 60 minutes per game, Wehrs said, most run around 30 minutes. Designer Zach Weisman said one of his goals is to make good games simpler and more expedient. “I prefer designing for the more casual player. Growing up, I was definitely more of an
alphagamer so I understand that kind of want for more depth in games and obscene strategy,” he said. “But then I realized I don’t ever want to spend more than an hour or two playing a game — I just don’t have that time.” Weisman is working on a game for the first flight of Calliope releases. He also created Got ‘Em! for Calliope. His father, popular designer and Calliope co-founder Jordan Weisman, is assisting with the game, as well. Weisman said around the same time he was invited to design for the project, he was visiting the Essen board game

He said the game took about nine months to get to its current form. “I was just sort of thinking of new and fun mechanics to use to mix together and make this game and I think it all came together kind of nicely,” he said. He playtested the prototype of his game for the Titan Series with Wehrs and others at International Tabletop Day on April 11 at Uncle’s Games in Bellevue. At the event, Calliope Games offered a table to play their prototypes with the designer and president, as well as a life-size version of one of their most board games, Tsuro. In the prototype of his game, Calliope employees and Tabletop Day attendees battled to build the best menus, buying the necessary ingredient cards and even buying the shops that sold them to thwart their competitors. Every game goes through a constant play-and-revise cycle. The designer tweaks, alters and overhauls, and turns it over to playtesters to play through and offer feedback. The designers may also play through the game with Wehrs to discuss what’s working. The designer then receives the game, and all of it’s new compliments and criticisms, and the cycle begins again. Paul Peterson, best known
for Guillotine and Smash Up, is also a designer for the first flight of games. His track record, he said, is what made Wehrs want to hire him for this project. “(Wehrs) is like, ‘You! I want you as one of these people.’ Because if you say ‘Guillotine’ or ‘Smash Up’ to a tabletop gamer they’re going to say, ‘Yes, I know those games. I want a game by that guy,’” he said. Previously, Peterson has worked for Wizards of the Coast, a company best known for Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, and online game companies like PopCap and Zynga. His current game is a dice game, with a tentative “Running of the Bulls” theme. He first came up with the game idea in 2011, but has been continually improving it since then. In it’s current form, with the bulls theme, he said he’s played it around 40 times. “It is a casual board game,” Peterson said. “The way I describe it is it’s like a pachinko machine using dice.” Many of the games for the Titan Series are in prototype stage, some farther along than others. Designer James Ernest is one of the “stretch goal” designers (his game will be released if the Kickstarter beats its initial funding goal). Ernest
owns a Seattle-based games company and has also worked for a handful of other designers, including Wizards of the Coast. He said he was invited to work on the project as a designer and as the main video producer for the Kickstarter campaign when Wehrs called him last New Year’s Day to bounce the idea off of him. “I would say that Ray has got a really crazy idea,” he said. “Things that have looked similar have failed in the past.” While he said he’s confident in the project, he understands the risk involved for backers to support the Kickstarter campaign. “Every one of these designers has made a bad game in his life so it takes a lot of trust for the backers to say, ‘I believe Ray will only buy a good game from this person’ or ‘I believe this person will only make a good game for this project,’” he said. “I would say the only reason I’m doing this is because of what a challenge it is — it’s a dangerous proposition. But I really want to knock it out of the park.”

Nick Roels, drum major for the Redmond High School (RHS) pep band, will be headed to the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) State Solo and Ensemble Competition at Central University tomorrow. Roels has been playing percussion for more than six years. He started playing at Evergreen Middle School under the direction of Eric Peterson, and then at RHS under the direction of Andy Robertson. At RHS, he has been involved in wind ensemble, jazz band, every musical play and has been a guest with the Washington
flake Lane in Bellevue for two years and has composed several pieces of music, as well. This year, Roels played for WMEA’s All-State Symphony under the direction of Gerard Schwartz, Pacific Lutheran University’s honor band and honor jazz band and the Lake Washington Honor Band. Last summer, he was nominated to play with the Washington Ambassadors of Music, a touring ensemble that played Americana favorites in seven countries for 15 days. This experience inspired him to begin his own jazz band, The Jazz Squad. This group of eight RHS students and alumni has played several community events
as standards by Count Basie, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, and add a little funk with Herbie Hancock and Maynard Ferguson tunes. Roels is looking forward
to being in the Bulldog Pep Band when he attends Gonzaga University in the Fall with a triple major in jazz studies, composition and business.

...Family Pets in their daily lives to keep fit and mentally stimulated, and you too will reap the rewards of more exercise. • Keep up on your pet’s grooming needs. Brushing your pet helps keep their coat shiny and healthy while providing a unique opportunity to spend quality time bonding with your pet. Untrimmed nails can be painful for your pet while regularly trimmed nails will protect your clothes and furniture. • Make oral hygiene care with your pet a priority. Dental hygiene is also extremely important. Regular dental cleanings are recommended for both cats and dogs. Some
pet owners may be reluctant due to cost and the need for general anesthesia, but the benefits often outweigh the cost. Dental cleanings focus on removing the tartar visible on teeth and can improve the
health of gingiva. • Update your pet’s microchip and tags. Time and time again, lost pets brought to the shelter or emergency animal clinic have out of date tags and microchips. Over
the course of a year, people move, get new numbers and forget to update their pet’s tags. Updating ID information is the best way to ensure a lost pet makes its way safely home.

Doctors from ACCES (A BluePearl Veterinary Partners Hospital) encourage you to consider your pet when getting back into shape or making that plan to hit the trails. “Maybe it is time to focus on finally getting that extra weight off your beloved companion,” said Dr. Beth Davidow, ACCES medical director. “Or, perhaps it is time to schedule that long overdue dental. Just remember that you are your pet’s best advocate and change starts with you.” The ACCES medical team recommends the following: • Ensure your pet receives an appropriate diet. Weight gain in pets, just like in humans, can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. If you notice your pet has packed on a few pounds or seems lethargic, schedule an exam with your veterinarian to discuss weight loss. • Schedule an annual
exam with your family veterinarian. Even if your pet has never had an illness, these exams are important to establish a good health and can be crucial in detecting emerging disease. For older pets on medications, a yearly exam is an important part of the monitoring process. Anti-inflammatories for arthritis, thyroid supplements, seizure medications, and insulin are some examples of medications that need to be closely monitored. • Try a to be more active with your pet or incorporate more playtime into your routine.
