Police arrest suspect in downtown arson cases Homeless man admitted to setting three fires BY BRIAN BECKLEY bbeckley@rentonreporter.com
Police in Renton have arrested a suspect in a series of downtown arsons, after recognizing the man from surveillance camera footage. According to police, a 32-year-old man admitted to setting three fires at the same location downtown. Police on Thursday recognized the man from surveillance photos and arrested him. According to police, the suspect is a local homeless man with misdemeanors on his record, though no felonies. The fires to which he confessed occurred at the 200 Mill building downtown. The downtown area has experienced a rash of arson fires over the past few months. Most fires were set in dumpsters, but some were set in areas that had the potential to spread to surrounding businesses and homes. [ more ARSONS page 11 ]

District plans two new elementary schools to meet rising demand BY TRACEY COMPTON tcompton@rentonreporter.com
The next 10 years could see two new elementary schools built in the Renton School District. That’s if school board members vote to put a new bond before Renton voters and voters approve the February 2016 measure. A committee of community members, district staff, city and civic economic developers and
planners and others recently completed work on the district’s construction project needs. The committee presented its recommendations, which includes two new schools to the school board directors on Wednesday. The district is looking at putting this school construction bond measure on the Feb. 9, 2016 ballot for voter approval. Recently district officials hired a demographer to create enrollment
projections for the next decade. The results found that there will be more than 19,000 students enrolled in the district by 2024. Currently, there are more than 15,000. The new schools could be built on land that the district already owns. The committee is proposing one elementary school be built at the current site of Sartori Education Center in north Renton and at [ more SCHOOLS page 4 ]

The City of Renton, the Renton Police Department and the Renton School District have agreed to an interlocal agreement that places three school resource officers in the school district during a three-year period. In 2013, the Renton Police Department lost grant funding, which resulted in the department losing money for its three school resource officer positions. At that time, the department chose an “adopt-a-school” program for officers to stop by and monitor schools along with their regular beats. It has taken until 2014, when a school resource officer returned to Renton High School, to get funding back for the positions. The second school resource officer was placed in September 2015 and the third will start beginning Jan. 1, 2016.

The school district is now paying the City of Renton $75,000 each school year for each of the school resource officers. District Safety and Security Manager Bill Blake is currently looking for additional school training for the officers. When trained, the officers will be familiar with all community agencies, which offer assistance to youth and their families such as job placement assistance, mental health clinics and drug-treatment centers. As detailed in the contract, school resource officers are not the school disciplinarians. They are assigned to “assist the principal and the District’s Safety and Security Manager in developing plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations that may result in student unrest,” the contract stated.

INVASIVE WEED PROBLEM AT COULON
The City of Renton will be adding an herbicide to the waters of Lake Washington next month to try and tame the invasive milfoil weed. On Monday, June 8, an aquatic herbicide will be applied to the waters of the swim beach and boat harbor at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park and at Kennydale Beach Park for the treatment of milfoil, an aquatic non-native weed that flourishes in Washington. An additional treatment will occur on Tuesday, June 9, if it cannot be completed on June 8. Milfoil is a feathery weed that can tangle up people, boat propellers, and fishing lines. It chokes out native plants, spreads rapidly to new areas and has few natural controls. Once established, it is very difficult to remove through mechanical removal efforts and aquatic treatment is the most effective solution. The process includes applying an aquatic herbicide below the surface of the water, which then settles on the plants. Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park swim area and Kennydale Beach Park will be closed on June 8 to conduct the application. The product used for this application is very safe and is authorized by the Washington State Department of Ecology. Aquatechnex LLC, the contractor conducting the application, has notified area residents and has posted signs.

Lindbergh pays tribute to work of alumnus Luke Somers Students learn about Middle East through slain photographer BY TRACEY COMPTON tcompton@rentonreporter.com
Luke Somers was Lindbergh teacher Jef Rettmann’s favorite kind of student. “Luke was a highly intelligent, kind and intellectually curious kid,” Rettmann said. “He was motivated by learning stuff that he found interesting much more than he was motivated by his grade.” Rettmann taught Somers in 1998, before he graduated from Lindbergh in 1999. Somers went on to become a sought-after photojournalist for capturing images of the Arab Spring as it spread to Sana’a in Yemen. In 2013, he was kidnapped and held for more than a year. Though her decision to Marcie Palmer withdraw comes too late to remove her name from the ballot, Palmer said she has no intention of campaigning. Talking herbs: When and where to plant for best results
THE COMPLEAT HOME GARDENER
Marianne Binetti
The end of May is a good time to add herbs to the landscape and enjoy these fragrant, tasteful and useful plants as part of a low water use landscape or edible garden. Local garden writer Sue Goetz has written a book “The Herb Lover’s Spa Book” that highlights some of the best herbs to use in relaxing scrubs, facial rinses, bath water soaks and to create a garden sanctuary. This richly photographed book includes easy recipes for making a scalp tingle mint shampoo, an on-the-go face scrub with rose petals, lavender and calendula and many more herbal delights. Many of the most popular herbs such as lavender, oregano and thyme are originally from Mediterranean countries with long hot summers. This makes them great landscaping plants for rocky soil and sunny areas that you don’t want to water. One of the best things about growing lavender is that it will look its best if you never water it all. Rainfall alone is enough to keep lavender producing blooms and fragrant foliage in Western Washington. Here are the most asked herb growing questions: Are there any herbs I can grow in the shade?
Q.
A.
Yes! Ignore the sun-loving basil, and thyme and if you have partial shade enjoy parsley, fennel, lemon balm, and sweet cicely. In full shade I can think of only two herbs that will thrive: Many of the mints - including my personal favorite Chocolate Mint - and the woodland groundcover sweet woodruff.
Q. A.
Can all herbs be dried and used in the winter? You can hang any herb plant upside down and dry the foliage but some retain their flavor and scent better than others. Use parsley, chives and coriander fresh when cooking as once dried these herbs lose their flavor. Many of the other common herbs such as basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage and tarragon are very easy to grow in a sunny spot and simple to dry and enjoy all winter. Harvest just before the plant begins to bloom for the most flavor. Mid-morning after the dew has dried but before the sun is hot is the perfect time to cut the tops off your herb plants and either place them in a food dehydrator or hang them from a line in a dark, dry and warm attic. Old window screens are great for drying herbs as well. Just lay the cut herbs on top of the window screens in a warm, dry spot and make sure the area has good air circulation. Strip the dried leaves from the plants when they are very dry to the touch
Lakeridge Elementary School removed from list of failing schools this month BY TRACEY COMPTON tcompton@rentonreporter.com
The Washington State Board of Education voted to release Lakeridge Elementary School from its list of failing schools in the state on May 14. Back in March, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn recommended the school exit out of the Required Action status because of dramatically improved student test scores in math and reading. Required Action Districts are those that receive money and assistance to help schools improve. Lakeridge was identified in 2011, based on a three-year trend in the previous years
of low performance, with the School Improvement Grant (SIG) Designation. At that time, the school was among the lowest 5 percent for performance of state schools. The Renton School District was recommended to leave the program because school officials successfully implemented a required action plan for three years, made sufficient progress that the district no longer has a school on the “Priority School” list and made progress closing the educational opportunity gap. The Morton School District and the Onalaska School District joined Renton in the list of districts that were to be released from
Required Action Status in an announcement from the State Board of Education on May 26. According to Board Chair Isabel Muñoz-Colón, “These schools received extra support from the state to close gaps in serving their students and have made remarkable progress.” At Lakeridge, all students’ proficiency on state assessments in reading and math combined and increased by over 30 percentage points to surpass the Washington state average, according to the press release. Students at Lakeridge were also said to have “displayed higher than average growth in reading and excellent growth in math.”

delectable herb. There are many types of basil but they all demand warm soil and warm nights so don’t leave them outdoors if the night temps will fall below 50 degrees. Basil also needs good air circulation in our climate to prevent the dreaded basil wilt disease. One of the most important tips is to pinch off all basil flowers as soon as the buds form. Once a basil plant blooms it will lose flavor and energy and take the rest of the summer off.

● QUOTE OF NOTE:
“This particular group of seniors are an amazingly mature, insightful collection of diverse, passionate people. They were truly interested in the reasons behind the story.” Lindbergh teacher Jim Jones on students’ work to showcase Lindbergh grad Luke Somers
We must find ways to help generations work together Each May, we celebrate Older Americans Month. Originally designated as Senior Citizens Month by John F. Kennedy, it was created in order to celebrate and honor the contributions older Americans give to the community and nation at large. This is a perfect time to reflect on the vast contributions by the older generation in Renton and how we can foster an intergenerational community, where we celebrate the knowledge, talents, and ideas that can be shared between the generations. This type of intergenerational union can only help strengthen the bonds within the community. The City of Renton is actively working toward this goal. According to Renton Mayor Denis Law, “Many organizations, from the arts to the museum, recruit young people to become part of their boards to help plan for the future and to find ways to engage and meet the needs of each age group. For instance, we are consciously recruiting younger people to serve on the Renton City Council, as well as our boards and commissions.” The Beth Johnson Foundation sums up this objective well with its definition of intergenerational practice: “Intergenerational practice aims to bring people together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities which promote greater understanding and respect between generations and contributes to building more cohesive communities. Intergenerational practice is inclusive, building on the positive resources that the young and old have to offer each other and those around them.” This is an admirable ambition and one we as a community should be striving for. But the question we must answer in order to achieve this is: How can we bridge the generational divide? Finding the answer is essential in order to continue Renton’s civic and philanthropic legacy, which countless citizens of all ages and backgrounds benefit from. The answer may lie within our own hands by expanding intergenerational activities through community organizations and city government, as well as by looking outside our community and emulating what other communities are already doing successfully in this area. With seemingly limited opportunities for generations to interact, this seems like a daunting task. Many organizations are struggling with how to replenish their membership ranks with younger members. It seems they’re all asking the same question: How do we encourage the younger generations to get involved? This challenge is something I’ve experiLisa Law

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Parents deserve to know why superintendent leaving I wanted to express that I find the reported “parting of the ways” with Superintendent Dr. Merri Rieger very disturbing, as do many parents of students in the Renton School District with whom I’ve spoken. Our concern is not because of the short term of Dr. Rieger (which is concerning but does occur), nor the fact that the district will now have to commit both time and resources away from student responsibilities to search for, and hire, a new superintendent. What parents find most disturbing from the story in the May 22 Renton Reporter is the apparent lack of transparency regarding the resignation, which is said to be due to “differing viewpoints” between the School Board and Dr. Rieger. As the parent of three children currently part of the Renton School District, it is concerning that there may be substantial enough disagreement as to the direction of the district to cause a leader, who has held the position barely two years, to resign an opportunity she had initially indicated she was “honored to have.” To make matters worse, the district refuses to comment on the nature of the “differing viewpoints” but rather emails out a weak statement that the district has “entered into an agreement to not discuss the matter.” Well I’m sorry, but that is simply not good enough for the parents of children in the Renton School District. When it comes to the direction of the organization tabbed with educating our children, parents deserve, no demand, to know what that direction is and what issues cause this amount of disagreement at the highest levels of leadership within the district. It is not acceptable to hide behind an emailed public relations statement and to not speak to the people in the district whom you’ve been tabbed to serve.
With record numbers of kids being pulled out of public school districts and home schooled; with considerable angst over items such as standards based grading, Common Core, and constantly changing standardized testing of questionable value, it is high time that school boards and school districts stop hiding behind canned statements and theoretical programs and develop complete transparency and a partnership with the parents whose children these programs impact. The parents of students within the Renton School District implore you to begin to truly open yourselves to real parental feedback, pay attention to concerns about our changing education system, and become more transparent with regard to the philosophies and “differing viewpoints” circulating around the district office. You can begin with more specific information about the parting of ways with Dr. Rieger. Steve Beals Renton
School Board must act with transparency The recent action by the Renton School Board to make a major personnel change in secret should be alarming for every taxpayer in the state. What if, when the voters knew the facts, they sided with the progressive ideas of a far bettereducated superintendent over the members of the board? Silencing dissent is one way an organization can manipulate public opinion and avoid public backlash. Without the facts, the voters in Renton’s school district have no way to gauge the actions of their elected officials, and that is simply unacceptable. If the former superintendent has done noth[ more LETTERS page 7 ]

Perinatal Depression, the Most Common Childbirth Complication Perinatal depression or anxiety occurs during or after pregnancy, and affects 15 to 20 percent of pregnant women, making perinatal depression/anxiety the most common complication of childbirth. Postpartum depression is associated with feeling anxious, irritable, inadequate, and sometimes scary
thoughts of the baby being hurt. These symptoms do not go away within a few weeks of delivery, often peak by four months postpartum, but can occur up to 12 months after childbirth. Postpartum depression and anxiety causes suffering not just for the woman experiencing these symptoms, but for the entire family. Adverse outcomes may include interference with maternal-infant bonding, early cessation of breastfeeding, impaired infant/ child development, adverse effects on early brain development, and family [ more DOCTOR page 15 ]

Many women experience some mood changes associated with pregnancy and childbirth. These changes can affect any woman of every age, culture, income level and race. enced first-hand through my involvement with The Next Curve. The Next Curve is a non-profit, under the umbrella of the Renton Community Foundation, whose primary goal is working to build the next generation of philanthropists in Renton. Getting the word out and getting young people involved is harder than one might think. When asked whether the city plans to expand intergenerational activities and connections within the Renton community, Mayor Law states, “We will continue to recognize the importance of understanding the needs of all of our residents, regardless of age, race or cultural backgrounds.” Senior Services, a comprehensive nonprofit agency serving older adults and their loved ones in Washington State, has successfully completed several intergenerational projects through their “Aging Your Way” initiative. Two such projects brought together students and seniors to share stories about their lives. They discussed topics such as work, fashion, struggles, fears, hopes, accomplishments, race, advice, and the ways they have fun. If you’re inspired to host your own intergenerational project, they’ve developed a
takeaway toolkit that can be found on their website, with a plan for individuals to host intergenerational activities. One idea for getting involved locally could be through mentoring. Communities in Schools of Renton (CISR) and the Talbot Hill Elementary MicroSociety program are both in need of adult mentors to work with children in the programs. Some additional suggestions for bringing the generations together include community gardening, neighborhood block parties/barbecues, neighborhood park revitalization, and community classes where younger and older generations can come together to learn valuable skills from each other, such as cooking, computers and technology, music, dance, and woodworking. The opportunities are endless. Given the overwhelming community support throughout Renton we could easily become a great intergenerational community, if we just put our minds to it.

I have been in the Renton area living and working and raising kids since 1982. My life has been in this town and it is awesome to be able to walk into a business and know them because of doing business here. My children, nephews and granddaughter came through the Renton School District. My experience for 15 years with the newspaper from production and data entry in 2000, office coordination, circulation, has been a great benefit to my new experience with sales. Having someone say "you look so familiar", and telling them for instance, "hollandaise on the side", that's how they remember me! I got married last year to Fraser McLaren a fella I've known since we were kids in the Skyway neighborhood in the early 70's. We are consumed by our beloved sports teams, great food, NASCAR and classic films like Jaws, We Bought A Zoo and National Treasure to name a few. #GO HAWKS!
Although most of my life has been in California, I have lived in Japan, Canada, Texas and Colorado. On a trip to Renton, we fell in love with the area and thought this is a great place to live, work and play. In fact, I don’t think any city has a more generous community of people. The Renton Chamber with a rich 75 year history is working with the business community both large and small; the Chamber is a vital ingredient in the growth that is taking place here. Active business recruitment, job fairs, advocacy, legislative leadership, educational opportunities, events that honor education and business, are just part of the Renton Chamber’s commitment to the city. My past history gives me the experience to know that Renton is on a fast track to growth. Newcomers along with longtime residents know and what I have discovered; healthcare, education and the quality of life is better here.

Phone stolen from casino | POLICE BLOTTER A casino security camera on May 8 caught a 40-year-old Seattle man in the act of stealing another gambler’s cell phone. The victim, a 37-year-old Burien man, left his phone charging on one table while he played cards on another, checking it every so often. He last checked it at about 2:20 a.m. The casino’s security cameras showed the suspect just minutes before unplugging the phone, then hiding it in his palm and sitting down at another table. The casino on East Valley Road was able to identify the suspect from the video. A charge of third-degree theft was referred to Renton prosecutors.
dysfunction. Postpartum depression/anxiety increases the risk of depression occurring again at any other point in one’s life. These conditions are temporary and treatable. Symptoms of Perinatal Depression may be Hard to Recognize It may be hard to recognize perinatal depression because often the symptoms are similar to normal experiences of having a newborn; being exhausted, overwhelmed and adjusting to life with a baby. Some women may think that their experiences are just part of being a new mom and may not even know about perinatal depression and anxiety. Sometimes women are afraid of being seen as complaining or not being able to handle motherhood. Some moms feel embarrassed or ashamed that they are not experiencing the joyfulness that they and everyone else, anticipates with motherhood. They fear admitting their negative feelings will lead to being bad mothers. Each women’s experience is unique, which is why all women should follow up with their healthcare provider if they have any concerns at all about how they are feeling in pregnancy or postpartum. Talk to Your Healthcare Provider about Mood Concerns Many healthcare providers who care for women in pregnancy will screen women in pregnancy and postpartum, with a routine series of questions assessing the woman’s risk. This is a screening tool and not a diagnosis. It is also common for pediatric care provider to
screen women at well-baby check-ups as another way of assessing how a new mom is coping. Your healthcare provider is someone you should talk to about any mood concerns in pregnancy or postpartum. Postpartum Psychosis, Rare but Real Emergency Postpartum psychosis is a much more serious complication, and thankfully, much rarer, occurring 1-2 times per 1000 births. Postpartum psychosis tends to have a rapid onset, usually within two weeks of birth, our Call in Yo go! orders t
and is a break from reality, characterized by delusions, disorganized thinking and sometimes hallucinations. Initial symptoms may be more subtle, including insomnia, obsessive concerns about the newborn and frequent mood changes. The delusions and beliefs make sense to the woman experiencing them, and they may wax and wane, at times appearing very psychotic and then “back to normal.” The onset of psychosis during the postparCATERIN ServicesG
tum period is a medical emergency, as women with postpartum psychosis are at increased risk to commit suicide or infanticide. If you or someone you care about may be experiencing a perinatal mood disorder, please contact
your healthcare provider. There is help available in many different forms. Some other excellent resources are: • Postpartum Support International (PSI.org) 1.800.944.4773 • PSI Washington 1.888.404.7763 http://www.

Java on Bronson Way North. She finally placed her order but then searched throughout her entire car to find money to pay for it. By now an officer was approaching her car, after 911 was called. The suspect gave officers a wrong name and wrong birth dates. Finally her name was confirmed. She was arrested for making false statements. In searching her, officers found a bag of what she said was Suboxone and another bag containing a substance that tested as heroin. She was booked into the SCORE regional jail for investigation of drug possession. She also had a state Department of Corrections warrant for escape from community custody.

BLOCK THOSE CALLS: A 52-year-old Renton man has had enough of harassing telemarketers. He asked the caller to please stop calling from a 425 area code and to tell his co-workers to do the same. But the calls continued, with a different four numbers at the end of the phone number. He was getting tired of putting them in his block-number account. His plea to police: “Could someone please ask them to stop?”
