Isabella glanced at her three friends — Hana, Bella and Jessie — smiled and softly told them: “Thanks for saving my life.” The longtime pals then engaged in an emotional embrace, which had people nearby on the verge of tears. On Tuesday night, the girls (whose last names are withheld for privacy reasons) gathered at Redmond City Hall for their harrowing

and yet uplifting story to be told in front of their families and friends. Also present were City of Redmond firefighters and medics and the 9-11 dispatcher who all had a hand in keeping 12-year-old Isabella alive after she went into cardiac arrest at about 5 p.m. on April 19. Hana, 11, Bella, 12, and Jessie, 15, received hero medals on Tuesday for their roles in alerting Isabella’s family and the 9-1-1 dispatcher and two of them performing CPR — along with two adults — on Isabella on a trail near a lake in the Redmond/Sammamish area. “It feels good,” said Isabella of her friends coming to her rescue. “I’ve known them for most of my life. I’m real happy.”

CHAIN OF SURVIVAL

Isabella, a Sammamish resident, had pre-existing heart issues and her parents always told her friends that if she fainted to call 9-1-1. As the four girls strolled along the trail on April 19 toward Isabella’s home

for a belated Easter party, Isabella became tired and leaned against a tree to catch her breath while her friends ran ahead of her. The girls soon stopped and wondered why Isabella wasn’t with them, and they ran back down the trail and found Isabella unconscious and not breathing. In a whirlwind of activity, Hana ran to the party to alert family and friends, Bella used Jessie’s phone to call 9-1-1 and the dispatcher, Chris Perez, determined that they needed to start performing CPR. Bella began the compressions and then Jessie — who received CPR certification in her middle school health class — took over before the adults arrived to continue helping Isabella. Led by Capt. Drew DeFazio, a pair of Redmond fire units were soon on the scene in less than six minutes and crew members took over CPR and delivered a single shock from an automatic defibrillator. Suspect flees to Marriott after robbing Simply Mac store A male suspect robbed three Redmond Town Center Simply Mac store employees at gunpoint and then fled on foot into the nearby Marriott hotel on June 11. No injuries were reported. Redmond Police Department (RPD) Cmdr. Tim Gately said on Tuesday that

www.redmond-reporter.com “detectives believe they have a suspect they are focusing on.” According to an RPD press release, officers responded to the armed robbery at about 8:15 p.m. and were informed that the suspect entered the Simply Mac store and displayed a handgun. The suspect stole cash and Apple merchandise (including laptop computers, iPods and electronics), placing them into large plastic bags. As the suspect casually walked around the Red-

mond Marriott Town Center lobby, he left behind large black plastic bags full of the stolen merchandise. After exiting the hotel, he ran west toward the downtown corridor and dropped a backpack in the parking lot west of the hotel. Police K9 units tracked the suspect away from the Redmond Town Center area, but were unable to locate the suspect. Police recovered the backpack, which appeared to contain a small handgun or airsoft pistol.

At the Sixty-01 Condominiums (6001 140th Ave. N.E.), RPD worked with the complex’s director of security services, Lawrence Whitworth, to create a substation for officers patrolling in that area. the importance of building community. “That’s important,” he said. “To know your community’s police department cares.” For Sixty-01, Whitworth said property management was looking at new ways to better communicate with the police department. He said he had an idea to partner with RPD, but wasn’t sure how. It wasn’t until an officer responded to a call at the complex a few months ago and he got to talking with them that they came up with the idea for a police substation. On the RPD side of the partnership, Lincoln said they were looking at where there are no stations nearby — the west side of Redmond. He credits patrol officers Craig Shanks and Laura Murphy to spearheading the project. “These were patrol officers with an idea,” he said. Gibson added, “This is a great example of two patrol officers taking the initiative to partner with our residents to be more visible in the community.”

For Redmond patrol officers, writing up a report after responding to a call may mean having to drive all the way back to the main Redmond Police Department (RPD) station. Making the trip downtown pulls these officers out from the area they are patrolling and may delay their response time if they receive another call from that area. One alternative would be for officers to work from inside their squad cars, which Lt. Steve Lincoln said are outfitted with mobile docking systems that allow officers to do any and all the work they need to do there. However, working in a car can get uncomfortable after some time. Lincoln said there are also some fire stations around town where officers can go to get some work done. Now a new partnership between RPD and a local condominium complex has provided police with a

Cameras were installed around the building and Sixty-01 has also provided a parking spot for a squad car. Lincoln said the latter may not seem like a big deal, but the police found it very accommodating. “It just turned into this really cool work space,” he said, adding that the substation provides officers with a safe place to work or just sit down. Whitworth added that the renovations to the guardhouse were paid for by Sixty-01. One of the things RPD stresses, is community policing, meaning an emphasis on officers being out in the community, meeting with people. “(The new substation) keeps our officers out in the field,” Lincoln said, as opposed to behind a desk at the main station. GUEST EDITORIAL

Help plan future transit service for our growing region JOHN MARCHIONE, CLAUDIA BALDUCCI, FRED BUTLER

With more than 10 unique cities, nearly half a million people and a diverse and thriving portfolio of businesses, east King County has rapidly become one of the nation’s most sought-after places to live, raise a family and work. As mayors of the cities of Redmond, Bellevue and Issaquah, and as Sound Transit Board members, we have seen how east King County and our entire three-county John Marchione region is positioned to grow, thrive and succeed. We know how interconnected our cities are, with people traveling between cities to get to jobs, school, health care and recreation, and how important it is to be able to travel throughout Claudia Balducci the Puget Sound region. It is time for east King County residents to come together and help shape a Sound Transit 3 ballot measure for voters to consider as soon as November 2016. After much work, Sound Transit will soon break Fred Butler ground on a 10-station East Link light rail line. When this project opens in less than eight years it will offer east King County residents and employees fast, frequent and reliable light rail connections throughout the region. But we know we need to continue to expand our regional transit system. We must prepare our cities and region for what’s

ahead. And what’s ahead is more growth. It is estimated that nearly a million additional residents and a million new jobs will locate in the greater Puget Sound region by 2040. In a region that will grow 30 percent in 25 years, there is no single solution to traffic congestion. However, high-capacity transit is the most effective way to address the clogged roadways we have available. We know that inaction and delay only result in worse congestion, worse air quality and a reduced quality of life. We can only meet these demands by thinking, planning and acting together, as one region. The demand already exists. We have heard loud and clear that citizens need additional regional transit options, including completing the East Link light rail line to downtown Redmond; building light rail from Totem Lake to Issaquah via Bellevue; adding Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on I-405 as long envisioned in the master plan; and adding express bus service and other infrastructure to allow us to travel between our homes and cities in east King County, as well as throughout our region.

Other regions we compete with for workforce talent and business recruitment are providing investments for moving people and goods. The Puget Sound region must continue to invest in our transit system. We need your help developing the Sound Transit 3 ballot measure. Through July 8 take an online survey at soundtransit3.org or join Sound Transit at any of a number of public meetings to discuss future transit needs, goals and projects in our region. You can learn more at soundtransit3.org. We invite you to participate in helping us ensure a strong, vibrant and prosperous future for years to come. Sound Transit is briefing Eastside groups on efforts to shape the ballot measure. If your group would like to hear from Sound Transit, please call (206) 903-7000.

John Marchione is the Mayor of Redmond. Claudia Balducci is the Mayor of Bellevue. Fred Butler is the Mayor of Issaquah. All three serve on the Sound Transit Board of Directors.

A great RHS graduation, but bad Seattle experience On June 12, relatives, family and friends all went to watch our granddaughter receive her graduate diploma from Redmond High. First of all, traffic was terrible. Took an hour-and-a-half to go over the tolled Evergreen Bridge. We were frustrated but dealt with that. Parking near KeyArena on the street was sparse, so we went to the indoor garage. Not a bad price at $5 for three hours...but the ticket stub made the amount $9 and there was no attendant to discuss the price. The ceremony was wonderful and well organized and we enjoyed all the young people and our granddaughter with the smiles and proud faces they had and the awards given out.

Our next encounter was for our dinner at Bucca Di Beppo’s. Reservations for 15 of us made a year in advance. The place was packed. Parking was hard to find unless one paid a minimum indoor parking fee of $10 next door. We looked and found plenty of street parking behind the restaurant on 8th Avenue North. It looked suspicious, seeing broken glass all over the street. We were running late so we parked there anyway against our best judgment. We had a good time with our dinner, excellent food and service, but that all changed when we went back to our parked cars. Right away we saw several distraught people standing beside their vehicles, broken into, busted glass and everything stolen. At least three cars and others that had left. We were lucky. Our car was not broken into, but we felt so bad for the others. It ruined their whole enjoyable night

and ours, too. My point to all this: Parking is expensive, even on the street and hours are much longer even on weekends. With all the business Bucca Di Beppo’s gets, they should be able to pay someone minimum wage to watch the street in back of their restaurant. How about the city putting cameras and put some of these people in jail for what they are constantly doing? After this experience, none of us will go to Seattle very often. Traffic is terrible, street and pay parking is expensive and dangerous. Two years ago, my daughter’s car was broken into near Seattle Center and that was indoor paid parking. Seattle, a great city but we will go to restaurants and movies in Redmond instead. The city has a fine police force and is watching all the time, so incidents like this are rare.

Microsoft to donate $10 million to help fund new UW building Over the next five years, Redmond-based Microsoft Corp. will be donating a total of $10 million to the University of Washington (UW) to help fund a new Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) building. The new building will allow the school to expand — something that has been needed for years.

KEEPING UP WITH DEMAND

Currently, the department is turning away more qualified applicants than it is accepting them. “Student demand is through the roof,” said Ed Lazowska, a CSE professor at UW, about the applicants. “We can only fit one-third of them.” According to the CSE department’s website, this month, 234 students graduated from the department with bachelor’s degrees, 105 graduated with master’s

degrees and 25 with doctoral degrees. Lazowska said while the CSE department offers degrees at all levels, the bulk is at the undergraduate level and students can earn bachelor of science degrees in computer science and computer engineering. With the new building, they hope to graduate about 600 students a year, with about 450 from the undergraduate program. Lazowska said the department moved into its current CSE building — the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering — in 2003 and the department has grown to the point that they are utilizing one floor of their old building. Lazowska said the Paul G. Allen building is about 130,000 square feet and the new building will be about the same size. The location of the new building has not been determined yet, but he said they want it to be near the current building as students and faculty will

be going back and forth between the two. “Neither building will be self contained,” he said. This means including additional classroom space, the new building will include a number of things they do not currently have such as an auditorium and more computer labs.

PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SUPPORT

Jane Broom, Washington state community affairs director for Microsoft, said the company has been part of UW’s CSE department since before there ever was a Microsoft, referring to how co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen used to spend time in the department while they were younger. Since then, Microsoft has supported the department in various ways such as cash grants and donating $7 million to build the Paul G. Allen building. Broom, whose role is to manage the company’s philanthropic portfolio, said

instrument retailer, announces the grand opening of its newest retail location, a state-of-the-art musical instrument and technology center covering more than 15,000 square feet in Redmond Town Center. The

their giving philosophy is reflective of what they think a good corporate citizen should be. Microsoft supports causes in the arts and human services, but she said their biggest cause is in education — especially science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Microsoft does this in a variety of ways, including donations such as this one for the new CSE building at UW. In addition, Broom said the company also lobbies down in Olympia and works education entities to help create education policies. The new CSE building, which Broom said is scheduled to be completed in 2018, will cost between $105 million and $110 million and will be funded by a combination of public and private dollars. Lazowska said UW will be requesting $40 million from the state. The remaining $65 million to $70 million will come from private donors such as Microsoft — which

grand opening will take place at 7 p.m. on June 25 at 7430 164th Ave. N.E., Ste. B205. Guitar Center’s Redmond location features modern showrooms equipped with the latest products

was the first corporation to contribute, just as it was for the Paul G. Allen building. Broom added that they hope that Microsoft’s donation will inspire other companies — especially other high-tech companies — to donate to the cause, as well. Lazowska said a new CSE building is just one way to support the department’s growth. They also need state support — in the form of dollars — to support enrollment growth. “We can’t grow (the department) out without legislative funding,” he said.

MANY BENEFITS

Lazowska said UW’s CSE department is relatively large and the No. 1 educator of top-tier jobs in the state. Having an even larger department, he said, will help more kids growing up in Washington who want to go into the field, noting that these benefits come back to the state, as well, as the vast majority of students from

for musicians—from guitars, amplifiers, percussion instruments and keyboards to live sound, DJ, lighting and recording equipment. The store also provides customers with a vast selection of products

Washington end up staying and working in the area after they graduate. Broom said currently, students graduating from UW’s CSE department are getting scooped up and hired at various companies right out of school and it is a competitive field for the recruiting companies. Having twice the amount of talent to pick from is beneficial for everyone. “That’s a huge difference,” she said. Lazowska said while having a pool of highly trained candidates available locally to hire from can help large companies such as Microsoft — companies of that size are able to recruit nationally and internationally. However, he said, smaller local companies and startups don’t have the resources to do that so working with a larger local talent pool will help. “That’s why Microsoft is doing this,” he said about the company’s investment in the region.

and a dedicated staff with unparalleled musical knowledge and experience. The grand opening will kick off with a free live in-store performance on June 25 by Success.

For Chuck Caldwell, spotting wildlife around his Union Hill neighborhood is not unusual. From deer to coyotes to lynx, he and his neighbors are used to seeing wildlife in their back yards. And in the last few weeks, they have been had a few bigger visitors. “We’ve had a lot of bear sightings,” Caldwell said. Personally, Caldwell — who lives in unincorporated King County near Redmond — has had a few recent encounters with a black bear (or multiple bears) as it has gotten into his recycling in

search of food. He said the bear he spotted was a young one, probably weighing about 120 pounds. And while Caldwell’s bear was a juvenile, the same cannot be said about his neighbors’ encounters. “My neighbors have seen more adults,” he said. One of his neighbors (whose name is withheld for privacy reasons) spotted a bear around her home last month, describing it as the largest male bear she had ever seen. She said the bear was going through her garbage. “He was gigantic and very well fed,” she said. The neighbor was in her car at the time so she

blasted her horn at the bear to scare him. She was able to enter her home through the garage and once she was safely inside, she said she took a bunch of empty soup cans and threw them on the cement in her back yard to make a lot of noise to scare away the bear. For Caldwell and his neighbor, bear sightings around the neighborhood are not uncommon. But Caldwell said it seems like they have had more this year, especially for this time of year — bear sightings usually occur later in the year. When a person becomes ill, doctors will look at their symptoms and treat them accordingly. While this approach addresses a patient’s immediate concerns, Caroline Hurd said today’s health care tends to be very disease focused and providers don’t always think about how a person’s illness and subsequent treatment applies to the larger fabric of their life. Hurd said those in the medical field need to start asking themselves about how

Wildlife (DFW), said there are more bear sightings this time of year compared to other years because with the warmer weather bears are coming out of their winter hibernation earlier than usual. “Usually they’re coming out in search of food,” she said about the bears who venture into residential areas. So far this year, DFW has received about 300 reports of bear sightings from urban areas. Last year, Dunlop said, they received about 700 total. Up in the Union Hill area, she said, they think there are

they provide care for patients and treat them as a whole, not just address the immediate issues. This approach is called palliative care, which is the kind of medicine Hurd — a medical doctor — practices. Hurd is also the director of education operations at the University of Washington Cambia Palliative Care Center of Excellence. On Wednesday, she was among a panel of experts who spoke on the topic at Trilogy on Redmond Ridge. The event also featured a screening of a 55-minute documentary on the topic.

The event came to Redmond Ridge after Ron Peck, who lives in Trilogy, realized that many of his fellow residents did not know much about palliative care. “It’s still an unknown entity,” said Peck, who also sits on the palliative care center’s community advisory board. He said Trilogy is a 55-and-older community and while residents are still active, getting older can lead to getting sick more. Peck thought having an event that would inform people about palliative care and let them know their options would be of interest for the com-

munity. “It’s important to know this is available to us,” he said. Peck added that while the Trilogy event was targeted toward an older audience, palliative care can be applied to patients of all ages. He said it is more holistic medicine and like Hurd, said it is “looking at the whole patient.” “There’s more to the person (than their illness),” Peck said. Hurd describes palliative care as specialized care for anyone with a serious illness. She said it is and extra layer

three bears, but pointed out that there are instances in which one bear could have been spotted multiple times. She explained that with the bears coming out of hibernation earlier, there are fewer food sources available at the moment as berries and other vegetation they feed on are not ripe yet. “(Black bears are) omnivores, but they do eat mostly vegetation,” Dunlop said. Because their main food source is not available, Dunlop said, the bears go out seeking food elsewhere — namely people’s trash, pet food that has been left

outside and bird feeders. To stay safe and keep bears out of their neighborhoods, she advised residents to make sure their garbage is secure, their pet food stays inside and to take down any bird feeders they may have around the house. Dunlop also offered advice

for what people should do if they encounter a bear. She said if you are indoors and see one outside, you should remain in your home until the bear leaves. If you are already outside, Dunlop said it is important to remain calm. Do not get any closer — give the bear

a place of need for better medical care. She said she is excited to see these types of events happening not just in the medical field but out in communities. Stephanie Mehl, a community educator at Providence Hospice of Seattle who also sits on the palliative care center advisory board and was the moderator for Wednesday’s event, has been part of many of these educational events. She said she has visited senior residences and libraries spreading the word about palliative care as she is “pretty passionate about this topic,” but has previously stuck to the other side of Lake Washington. “This is the first time I’ve done it on the Eastside,” she said.

of support, personalizing and individualizing things for the patient and their family. “We do that in a lot of ways,” Hurd said. Some of those ways include treating side effects from the patient’s initial treatment such as respiratory issues, nausea or pain. Hurd said palliative care can also mean helping patients and their families with the complicated medical system, providing a road map of what they can expect once they leave the doctor or hospital, coordinating care, connecting them with resources or even helping to arrange home visits. Hurd said discussions about palliative care such as the one held on Wednesday at Trilogy are coming from

and provided advanced cardiac support to get Isabella’s heart restarted and transported her to Children’s Hospital in Seattle. She awoke two days later, had open-heart surgery the following week and returned home a week later. At Tuesday’s gathering, DeFazio noted that Perez handled the situation well in focusing, calming and directing the kids to help Isabella, who was already scheduled to have heartvalve surgery the following Friday. It was all about teamwork and performing well under pressure, DeFazio said, adding that there was a chain of survival present — from the girls to the dispatcher to the medics to the hospital physicians. “If any single one of these links fail, then

Isabella isn’t sitting here today,” DeFazio said. Isabella has been feeling well over the last few months. “It’s been better, I feel good. I’ve been doing more than I had when I just got out of the hospital,” she said on Tuesday. Mayor John Marchione said the City of Redmond has a 65 percent save rate of heart attacks. “It’s because we have public education and it’s because we have great people like the ones who we are (talking) about tonight that make the survival rate so high. It takes a community to get this done,” he said. Added Jan Sprake, executive director of the Medic One Foundation, at the meeting: “45 years ago, a cardiologist at Harborview, Dr. Leonard Cobb, had an incredible vision.

He and Chief Gordon Vickery of the Seattle Fire Department thought that it would be a great idea to train the community to help them in (CPR) response. And I think it’s so cool that that vision is living today because of what you girls did in times when Isabella really needs you. So, you’re part of our exclusive group.”

have been best friends and inseparable since preschool. Isabella’s the quiet one and Bella is on the loud side, but they balance each other out. Both girls smiled at each other as Hana and Jessie nodded their heads in approval of Bella’s comment. Bella’s adrenaline took over during the intense

incident in April. “I don’t think I was really thinking, then after, we both kind of broke down,” Bella said after she and Jessie performed CPR. “I just think (Isabella) is an angel put on Earth and she’s meant to be here.” When Perez told the girls they need to start CPR, Jessie, also a Red-

mond resident, noted: “I guess my training kind of kicked in and I just automatically just began doing that. In the moment, it didn’t really feel like I was saving her life, I just felt like I was doing what I had to do.” Jessie said she’s glad that her good friend is alive and well.

FRIENDS TO THE RESCUE

Hana of Woodinville said it was a nerve-wracking situation when she witnessed her close friend in need of medical attention. Isabella’s a big part of the girls’ lives and they knew they had to help quickly. “I’m just glad that (Isabella’s) still here with us today and that I got to help with part of that,” Hana said. Redmond resident Bella said that she and Isabella

Redmond Lacrosse Club high-schoolers conclude challenging varsity season SPECIAL TO THE REPORTER

Redmond Lacrosse Club’s high school team, which consisted of players from Redmond and Cedarcrest, concluded a challenging season last month. The team got off to a slow start with a new coach and recruited six new players to fill the roster of 11 players. Coach Kirk Bachison from the Tri-Cities area, who has taken past teams to state championship playoff games, had a vision to improve the team by encouraging the players to step up to varsity this year (last year they played junior varsity) so the players could be tracked with statistics. Most teams have at least 18-24 players and are

According to his son, Eli, the cyclist’s goal is to raise $10,000 for awareness for heart disease in partnership with the American Heart Association. At press time, Vlad has raised $2,550 via his website www.vlad volynsky.com. People can donate there and check his progress at www.facebook. com/C2CVladVolynsky. “Riding with heart. There will be more than 60,000 feet of accumulative elevation gain. His ride is self-supported with nearly a year of advance planning. Vlad said of his inspiration to tackle the fundraiser: “Today, 30 percent of global deaths are attributed to cardiovascular disease. We all know someone who faces it. Despite a losing season, every coach from the league was complimentary of the team’s efforts. Bachison had to strategically keep the boys from injuries and help them “survive” in each game without subs. Bachison also maintained the synergy and high spirits of the team by encouraging them to focus on statistics for individual players throughout the season: Craig Decker (sophomore), long stick middie and face off, was No. 1 in state with a total of 180 ground balls (turnovers) and averaged 15 balls a game.

Kellen Baker (junior), attack, was ranked No. 3 in Division II Kingco with 22 goals. Hunter Grein (junior), goalie, was ranked No. 6 in Division II with 128 saves on 305 shots (42 percent); he was No. 23 with 23 ground balls. Regan Lee (sophomore), middie, was ranked No 10 in Division II with 37 ground balls and No. 13 with four assists. Hayden Poore (sophomore), attack, was ranked No. 13 in Division II with 13 goals. Caden Pratt (sophomore), defender, was ranked No. 13 in Division II with 35 ground balls. Jude Hammond (sophomore), middie, was ranked

No. 15 in Division II with 31 ground balls and No. 18 with three assists. Hamilton Busenbark (sophomore), defender, was ranked No. 22 in Division II with 23 ground balls. Other team players (freshman): Alec Karnik, Chi Chiles and Billy Reed. The team is looking forward to increasing its team size with upcoming freshmen, past players and any other interested athletes that love action and a fast moving game with skill.
