Kent city and fire officials are asking residents to be extra careful with discharging fireworks this year because of the dry conditions and to even consider not setting off any fireworks. “This is an unusual year with hot temperatures and dry conditions that combine to create a high fire danger,” Mayor Suzette Cooke said. “We strongly encourage the public to attend a professional fireworks show like the city of Kent’s Fourth of July Splash at Lake Meridian Park and avoid the use of personal fireworks this year.” Fire danger is extremely high in King County, said Kyle Ohashi, public information officer for the Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority. Fire officials offer several tips for residents to reduce the chance of fires and injuries. • Instead of discharging fireworks, consider going to one of the many professional fireworks displays offered throughout the Puget Sound region. The shows are free and the hot weather means it will be comfortable when the shows begin, which is typically at 10 p.m. • Only purchase legal fireworks. Legal fireworks are those that can be purchased [ more FIREWORKS page 15 ]

KENT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WELCOMES NEW KENT SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT The Kent Chamber of Commerce will host a reception to welcome new Kent School District Superintendent Calvin Watts to the community. The reception will run from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Golden Steer Steak n’ Rib House, 23826 104th Ave. SE in Kent. Watts took over as superintendent of the district on June 15. A dispute broke out in court on Monday in Kent among friends and relatives of two men involved in the June 11 West Hill shooting death. Christopher I. Hutton, 42, entered a not guilty plea to first-degree murder at the arraignment in King County Superior Court at the Maleng Regional Justice Center. King County prosecutors claim Hutton shot and killed JaeBrione Gary, 22, at an apartment reportedly to avenge some type of earlier robbery of Hutton by Gary. More than a dozen of Gary’s friends and family members attended the arraignment. Several of Hutton’s family and friends also were present. Before the arraignment, a dispute broke
out between the two parties. After several minutes, corrections officers calmed both parties so court could resume. Following the arraignment, another scuffle broke out in the hallway outside the courtroom. Hutton’s attorney made a motion asking Judge Patrick Oishi to prevent the media from photographing Hutton’s face, citing a “fear of retaliation.” Oishi denied the motion, allowing photographs to be taken. Hutton remains in the county jail in Kent with bail set at $1 million. Hutton, whose last known address was a Federal Way hotel, is scheduled to return to court on July 13 when a trial date could be set or attorneys could ask for more time to prepare the case. According to charging papers, Hutton reportedly

Michael Riley pleads not guilty to first-degree murder. HEIDI SANDERS, Kent Reporter
A 34-year-old Kent man pleaded not guilty on Monday in King County Superior Court to a charge of firstdegree murder in connection with the death of a another Kent man who tried to stop him from stealing his car. Michael Riley appeared in court at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent to face the charge. He remains in custody at the county jail in Kent with bail set at $1 million. He is scheduled to return to court on July 13 when a trial date could be set or attorneys can ask for
the area of the shooting and had seen Hutton parked at the apartment complex in recent months in a late 1990s Cadillac El Dorado. Police had the license plate of the car and put out an all-points bulletin about Hutton and his vehicle. Renton Police spotted the Cadillac shortly after the shooting and stopped Hutton in the 10500 block of Southeast Carr Road. He was taken into custody without incident. Kent Police obtained a search warrant for the Cadillac and found in the trunk a chrome-color revolver wrapped in a wash rag inside a plastic grocery bag. The gun appeared to have a blood smear on it. During an interview with detectives, Hutton denied any knowledge of the shooting of Gary and claimed he
more time to prepare the case. Jonathan Burnett, died from injuries, suffered in the June 11 evening incident when he left his black Hyundai Sonata running momentarily in front of the Somerset Apartments, 25220 109th Ct. S.E., and then tried to stop Riley from reportedly stealing his vehicle. Burnett, who had left his car to make contact with residents at the apartments, saw Riley get into the driver’s side of the vehicle and tried to climb through an open window on the passenger’s side to get Riley to stop. After about a block, Burnett was thrown from the vehicle and was seriously injured. Witnesses said it appeared Riley was intentionally trying to get Burnett out of the vehicle by swerving and hitting the curb. Witnesses started first aid until officers arrived and took
hadn’t been in that area in the previous three days. He also denied he had any guns in his car. He told detectives he had watched the NBA playoffs that night and then went to visit his wife’s residence in Renton. He said he was driving back to his Federal Way hotel when Renton Police stopped him. Hutton has several criminal convictions, including two counts of first-degree promoting prostitution in 2007 in Kent, where he lived in an apartment. He used girls younger than 18 while running a prostitution ring. Gary and Hutton had reportedly known each other for a number of years. An aunt of Gary told detectives that she had dated Hutton many years ago. Reporter Steve Hunter contributed to this article.
over doing CPR. Medics arrived and took the Burnett to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he later died. On June 11, Kent Police put out an all-points bulletin to surrounding agencies for the stolen vehicle. About an hour later, Renton Police responded to a vehicle collision involving Burnett’s stolen vehicle, and arrested Riley near the scene. Riley is a self-admitted member of the Valley Hood Piru street gang and has prior convictions for second-degree kidnapping, obstructing an officer, theft, weapons display and solicitation, according to charging papers. When detectives tried to talk to Riley in jail about the incident, he had already advised jail staff he didn’t want to talk to police without his attorney present.

[ BAKER from page 1 ] issued the sentence June 26 at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent. McCullough also ordered Baker to repay the league $208,743. “I just want to say I’m so deeply sorry for letting Kent Little League members down as treasurer, Baker said to the court prior to his sentencing. “All of the years as treasurer I tried to be the best treasurer I was. Like my attorney said, I just got out of hand. I bought a business I probably shouldn’t have. I lost everything, and my dignity and the trust of people. I’m just ready for whatever you give me. Baker pleaded guilty in May to six counts of first-degree theft (value of more than $5,000) and two counts of second-degree theft (value of more than $750) in connection with taking money from the group’s bank accounts during a 16-month period in 2012-13. He used some of the funds in an attempt to keep his newly acquired Benchwarmer Sports Bar and Grill in Kent afloat, according to charging papers. The bar along Russell Road has since closed. McCullough said because Baker does not have a criminal history, accepted responsibility for the crime,
didn’t force the state to a trial and he poses no threat to community safety, he decided to issue a low-end sentence. But he declined to go below the minimum because of “a huge amount of money taken from a youth organization. “I think the low end of the standard range is enough to drive home the point that the theft was inappropriate and gives Mr. Baker enough time to think about it and at the same time gives him the opportunity to reintegrate into the community sooner than the 29 months so he can resume employment and work to paying the restitution that he’s already agreed to pay, McCullough said. Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Amanda Froh recommended the court sentence Baker to 29 months. “This is an extremely unfortunate case all around, she said. “I have no doubt that Mr. Baker was under an extraordinary amount of stress when he decided to make the decisions that he did that led us to the courtroom today. “There are certainly a lot of people in this world who have stressful financial situations in their lives and they don’t resort to act after act after act of theft from a nonprofit, from a Little
League, over the course of a year completely abusing the trust those people in the organization put into him. Baker made 271 transactions, from cashing cashier checks to withdrawing cash from bank machines out of the league’s bank accounts. He cashed two checks for more than $20,000 each. Ronald Dale, a former Kent Little League board member for 14 years, spoke in court to support the maximum sentence. “I was so shocked and disturbed when I heard what happened and then who had done it because he was a neighbor of mine, Dale said. Two female friends of Baker showed up in court to support him but did not speak to the judge. One woman blew Baker a kiss as she left the courtroom before guards handcuffed him. Williams, the attorney for Baker, argued for a sentence below the minimum. “Mr. Baker made a very terrible choice, Williams said. “He got laid off from a job, decided to go into business and had no business experience whatsoever. He probably got taken by the seller of the business, he lost his shirt and started paying for the business with his own funds and then he started paying with Kent Little League funds

and things got worse and worse. Williams then explained how Baker tried to get a loan out of Nigeria. “Along came some Nigerian scammers who sent him an email and he took the email for gold, Williams said. “There were carrying charges and fees so in order to get his $100,000 loan from the scammers he had to pay $20,000. Then another scammer came along who was going to undo what the first scammer did and he got scammed by them, too, and it turns out he lost approxi-
mately $100,000 given to these scammers. ‌Then he started to dipping into Kent Little League funds that were available to him.â€? League president Greg Whitcomb discovered the missing funds after he had a Kent Little League ATM card declined in December 2013. He reported the alleged theft to the Kent Police that same month. During Baker’s statement to the court, the judge asked him several questions, including how as treasurer he could cash checks with just one signature. “It’s not that difficult,â€?
Baker said. “I know the bylaws of the Kent Little League that transfers are supposed to have double signatures but they just don’t look at that. As far as the ATM, anyone can make withdrawals if you knew the pin. Baker has only $1,600 to his name, his attorney said. Baker has worked the last four months as a driver for Uber, a private car transportation service, and made about $1,000 a month. Baker’s Maple Valley home is up for sale as a short sale and Baker isn’t expected to make any money from the sale.

Question of the week:
That darn water. For thousands of years we mostly upright humans have prayed to it, started wars over it, killed people in it and with it, built fancy huts to be close to it and tried to figure out ways to get out of it or get more of it. Whether the water is falling from the sky or spraying out of the ground, it’s sure to be unpredictable, complex and nearly always perplexing. In my experience, I have found when I want water to fall from the above, the sky is as all blue and happy. When I need blue skies looking at me, black clouds suddenly fight each other to fill the spot directly over my head. I suspect someone up there has a twisted sense of humor. Plumbing is another tale of water woe for me. I can’t tell you how many $20 books I have bought telling me in simple steps how to stop the dopey waterfall from my pipes. Why do guys pictured in those books always looks so smiley and clean? Every plumbing job I do ends up as a mass of black, smelly foulness, and or course endless leaks. Sometimes the pipe waits for me to leave and go to bed before it starts gushing. There is something about this formless element that be piles of fun for many or mountains of misery. Droughts are no joke. We may live in the land of rain, but the current drought that will likely be costly to farmers and shoppers in grocery stores. The agriculture industry in Eastern Washington and in many places on this side of the state are taking a hit, and some may not recover. Long dry spells cause aquifers to become underground puddles. Those below the surface lakes are a fascinating subject and guarded by the Department of Ecology like crown jewels. There is a long history of droughts plaguing civilizations, and there is no crystal ball available to say when it the rain will return. Forecasting rain and other weather things is one tricky business. At least forecasters today don’t face boiling canola oil with rosemary seasoning if they get it wrong like in some earlier hair-ball administrations. For anyone looking for excellent and reliable writing about the weather go the Kent Reporter’s website, kentreporter.com, and under the blogs tab you will find Cliff Mass’ blog. He is a University of Washington professor of atmospheric sciences. Anytime I really wants to know weather magic for a story, I call Cliff. He currently has a good piece on El Niño and what the winter may look like for the Pacific Northwest and California, which is drowning in drought dust. Mass also links to a Amar Andalkar’s discussion of snowpack during an El Niño. [ more BOX page 7 ]

Fireworks patrols won’t work In response to the (June 26) article Kent Police plan crackdown on illegal fireworks: What an asinine non-solution to the fireworks issue in Kent our City Council members are sticking together on. As a resident, I’m supposed to call 911 each time I hear bomb go off the whole week prior and including the Fourth? Get real. In years past, the bombs go off repeatedly for hours on end. Our local police are going to play cat and mouse trying to figure out who is blowing them off, and where they might be by the time the police show up? And those who are setting off illegal fireworks are going to hang around after they’re done so they can get a fine? Councilman Jim Berrios says, “I’d hate to think that someday we will talk about eliminating fireworks on the Fourth of July.” Well, guess what Mr. Berrios? There are many residents who hate to think we have to endure this nonsense for a week prior and all day on the Fourth! The Fourth of July is about a lot more than blowing off fireworks. How about we focus on that? I personally have far better things to do than spend my time on the phone to 911 for a ‘plan’ that is ludicrous. As a 22-year Kent resident, this is the first year I’m vacating my home with my animals on the Fourth.
Letters policy The Kent Reporter welcomes letters to the editor on any subject. Letters must include a name, address and daytime phone number for verification purposes. Letters may be edited for length. Letters should be no more than 250 words in length. Submissions may be printed both in the paper and electronically. Deadline for letters to be considered for publication is 2 p.m. Tuesday. Our council has repeatedly allowed more than I’m going to endure on the Fourth, and now residents are supposed to hit redial to 911 every time we hear a bomb go off ? And tell them what? “A bomb just went off. I don’t know quite where, or who did it, nor do I know where they might be when the police arrive.” But call anyway? Council members, you are nincompoops! When you run for re-election, do not leave your ridiculous political ads on my phone, because I will not be voting for anyone on this council again. – Andrea Price
Stop the St. Clair mayor attacks I write to express my extreme frustration that the Kent Reporter continues to print letters written by Susan St. Clair,
a bitter women whose only agenda is to defame our mayor. I do not believe this public newspaper should be providing an ongoing forum for this pathetic woman’s continuing diatribe of hate. Please publish my letter because I am quite certain I am not the only person who is sick and tired of you providing this outlet for a woman who needs to move on with her life in a more positive way. I would also like to thank our mayor and City Council for their dedicated service to our community. Have they pleased everyone? No, of course not. Not possible. But they could have conducted this salary survey years ago and given themselves well deserved raises long before now. How many working people in our community have gone 10 years without a raise? How many people really know how much work is involved in running a city? If you don’t know, you really are not in any position to criticize as if you were some kind of authority on the subject. And that goes for Ms. St. Clair whose only agenda is personal. – Marsha St. Louis

www.kentreporter.com activity. We have come to dread the Fourth of July because of the unorganized fireworks activity. It begins several days early and continues several days later. Regulating it is impractical and virtually non-existent. Some fireworks today border on military ordinance. Kent have enacted bans. Our City Council members wring their hands every year, agree to “study the problem, but do nothing to prevent the activity. We have lived in Kent in the same house for 29 years. Last year was the worst July 4 we have ever experienced. In the days leading up to, and following the Fourth of July, we were inundated with explosions. On July 4 we called 911 three times and were put on hold. Our neighbors were drunk and setting off illegal mortars without using the tube. When the police were finally able to respond, it was not until after 11 p.m. and by then several nearby cars were

Globetrotters draft Kentwood graduate
to do all their cool tricks. If I decide to take their offer, they will teach me all that. After graduating from Kentwood in 2011, Huerta played three seasons at
Eastern Washington University in Cheney, before transferring to Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu to finish her collegiate career. She was named to
the All-PacWest Conference first team and led the Sharks to a 25-5 record and the school’s secondever berth in the NCAA Division II tournament.
She averaged 15 points, seven assists, five rebounds and 1.4 steals per game her senior season. She shot 42 percent on 3-pointers and 86 percent on free throws. Huerta was studying elementary education and planned to return to Hawaii Pacific in the fall to complete her degree. “That was the plan pretty much until that (being drafted by Globetrotters) all came about, she said. Huerta said her plans won’t be final until after she meets with the Globetrotters, but the opportunity to play with the team seems too good to pass up. “At this point, I have only good thoughts and feelings about taking the position they are offering me, she said. “If I had to choose at this point in time, this is a once-in-lifetime opportunity that hardly no one gets. The Kentwood graduate would love the chance to play basketball as a career. “I am not ready to be done, she said. “This could be next step up to playing basketball. Huerta is most excited about the opportunity to travel with the team and perform for audiences around the world. “The Globetrotters are looked up to, she said. Three other T-Birds also were taken in the draft, wing Ryan Gropp by the New York Rangers in the second round, wing Keegan Kolesar by the Columbia Blue Jackets in the third round and defenseman Ethan Bear by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round.
The Islanders moved up in the draft to select Barzal from the Kent-based team. The Islanders traded defenseman Griffin Reinhart to the Edmonton Oil Kings to acquire the 16th and 33rd selections. Barzal is the 15th T-Bird to be selected in the first round. The last T-Bird to be
selected in the first round was defenseman Shea Theodore in 2013. Theodore was taken 26th overall by the

MIST TAKE ON TEMPTATION IN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL AT SHOWARE CENTER
For former Kentwood High School girl’s basketball star Kylie Huerta, playing for the worldfamous Harlem Globetrotters was beyond her wildest dreams. But, after being drafted by the organization on June 23, the 22-year-old Covington native has the opportunity to be a part of the elite team. “It was all kind of out of the blue and unexpected, she said. “It wasn’t really a dream or anything. Huerta said her aunt, Anne Bean, got her interested in the Globetrotters. “She (Huerta’s aunt) said, ‘I think when you are done playing college the Globetrotters would be awesome for you,’ said Huerta, who helped Kentwood win the Class 4A state title in 2009. Huerta was surprised when the Globetrotters reached out to her a couple of months ago after she and her aunt contacted them. Huerta and her parents will head to New Jersey the end of July to meet with the team and discuss a contract. The Globetrotters feature a couple of female players on their touring teams. “There is a little tryout - just normal basketball shooting, dribbling, the 5-foot-1 point guard said. “I don’t have to know how

sharing the excitement of being drafted with her friends and family. She is the daughter of Travis and Mary Huerta and the oldest of six children. “They are so supportive,” Huerta said of her family. “It means the world to me to have all the support. They are just as happy as I am. That really says a lot.” Even if Huerta accepts an offer with the Globetrotters, she hopes to someday be able to pursue her dream of being an elementary school teacher. “Having so many brothers and sisters, I love having kids around,” she said. “That is still a huge goal and dream of mine. Kent School Board member Agda Burchard said the opportunity to obtain the certification is an important component of the program. “I have a co-worker whose husband is big in the IT world and is trying to move to another company but didn’t have the certification and it was a barrier to him moving on to another company and getting hired there,” she said. “So our students having that when they graduate will help

is going all the way through the school system… from the earliest coming up through the school system and having something that can be transferred and certified they’ve got a pathway for life. That’s where we can really make a difference.” Kentlake High School offers a medical career pathway program through a partnership with Renton Technical College, which can lead to Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. Hong said an education pathway through a partnership with Green River is also in the planning stages and expected to be in place this fall. The district looks at the interests of each high school when deciding what pathway to add at a school, Hong said. He said eventually existing pathways could be expanded to other high schools. “The goal is to provide opportunities for students to develop both college and career ready skills that’s been the fundamental goal of all these pathways we have developed and want to develop yet to help students to explore options for careers,” he said.

Students will have opportunities to intern with the school district’s IT department. Pete Lewis, the Green River College Board of Trustees president, said the pathway will be a great opportunity for students. “Having a pathway that is not just a course you take for a degree but also a pathway for success for a future life where they can go right in to an industry, is something that is exciting to us,” he said. “That matchup now

n 1980, an African American woman sat on an old dilapidated couch, shaking, as tears flooded her eyes. Legs covered with bruises, terrified, she held her infant daughter, trying to comfort her. Nearby, her four year old was curled in a fetal position, moaning softly. The floor was littered with a broken lamp, patches of hair, torn clothing, and crushed cereal. All grim reminders of her husband’s violence a few minutes ago. He was a 7 ft. 2” tall minister. She remembered him putting his face close, his fists tight, as he knocked her to the ground. Her belly tightened with pain, fear, and dread for what he would do next. He yelled, “You little whore! Don’t you know I’m head of the house, and you have to do what I tell you! If you ever try to leave me again, I’ll kill us all!” Sometime later, she heard the sound of the front door slamming. Temporarily alone, she called a 24-hour Domestic Violence Hotline, and found connections to a network of advocates who provided the tools and resources she needed to become a survivor. Three very strong and brave African American senior women of faith were also always there to encourage and support her. The great combination of helpers was a key ingredient in rediscovering her own voice, and learning that she deserved to be treated right. I was that woman, and you too can make a difference in your own life, as well as others. We all have a responsibility to take action to end violence, so that no one has to suffer the pain of abuse ever again. If you or someone you know needs help, find the domestic violence program in your community by visiting wscadv.org or calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or 1-800-787-3224 (TTY). Don’t forget to water blooming baskets, container gardens July is the month to put your mettle to the petal and commit to caring for your blooming baskets and container gardens. You must water more often when the weather warms up and roots fill the soil and demand more to eat and drink. Water until you see drainage seeping from the hole at the bottom of the pot. Fertilize at least once every two weeks to keep petunia and fuchsia baskets in full bloom. July is also a good time to pinch back petunias by about one-third for bushier plants. Use your pruning crumbs as cut flowers as petunias can be surprisingly fragrant and long lasting in a vase.
Q.
Is it too late to plant vegetables? I see some nurseries have tomato plants left, but I also want to grow some beans and peas from seed. T.B., Enumclaw
A.
Get growing as there is still time this summer for a harvest of beans, broccoli, spinach and beets this fall if you plant seeds now. All
I am saying is don’t give peas a chance. Peas are a cool season crop and will not do well when planted this late in the season. Your pea seeds may sprout but the warm nights mean they will suffer from blights and other fungus among us. Tomato plants will do great if you find them growing in containers and transplant them either into your soil or a larger pot picking the hottest spot on your property. Up against a south or west facing wall and protected from the rain is best for tomato growing in Western Washington. Bush beans will give a quicker harvest than pole beans and you won’t need to provide tall supports but the taller bean varieties provide more beans to harvest in less space. Pole beans keep producing as long as you keep the new beans picked. Starts of squash, pepper and eggplants will also do well when planted into the garden this month.
THE GARDENER
A Personal Call to Action
Marianne Binetti

Q.
I want to add summer color – I see dahlias for
sale at the garden center but they are shorter than the dahlias I remember my mother growing. In her garden the dahlias would return year after year and get six feet tall. I would prefer these dwarf dahlias but want plants that will return each summer. R.P. , Tacoma
A.
The darling dwarf dahlias you see now at the nurseries will bloom all summer and into the fall on compact plants but most of the short dahlias are annuals which mean they only flower one year and must be replaced annually. The tall dahlias that grow from a bulb-like root are called tuberous dahlias and this is the type that may overwinter in well-drained soil or you can dig and store the roots in the fall and replant each spring. A new type of dahlia is now available that is a compact tuberous dahlias that does not need staking but will overwinter like their taller cousins. All dahlias will continue to bloom if you keep on picking the flowers so pick out blooming plants now and you’ll still have months of color to enjoy.
Dahlias need at a least a half a day of sun, and loosen the soil all around the root zone adding some slow release plant food and compost into the planting area. Now the good news – compared to most summer blooming plants dahlias do well with less water and less fertilizer making them a great choice for busy gardeners. Just keep picking those blooms.
Q.
My lawn is turning brown. How much water and how much fertilizer does my lawn need to stay green? I am considering putting in a sprinkler system. T., Olympia
A.
This is a hard question with no easy answer. It is natural for grasses to go brown or dormant in the summer, and how much to water depends on your soil, sun and type of lawn seed you have planted. The general rule of green thumb is one inch of water per week. Instead of a sprinkler system, it is more practical in our region to set an oscillating sprinkler onto your lawn and run it once or twice a week until an empty tuna can or rain gauge shows that the sprinkler has delivered one inch of water. The corners that your sprinkler cannot reach can be replaced with drought resistant groundcovers, gravel or shrubs. Aerating the lawn in the spring, adding organic
matter and reseeding with a new drought resistant grass seed next spring or this fall are all ways to keep your lawn green without wasting water. When it comes to fertilizer the typical lawn needs one-half to one pound of actual nitrogen for every 1,000 square feet. The best time to fertilize lawns in Western Washington is in the spring or fall. One more tip – just say no to the low mow. Lawns allowed to grow three inches tall and then cut down to two inches will stay green longer and shade out many sun seeking weeds. Use a mulching mower and leave the clippings on the lawn to return nitrogen to the soil. Sprinkler systems that come on every day will keep a lawn green but they are a huge waste of water as frequent watering keeps the grass roots near the surface of the soil. Watering a lawn too often will also encourage fungal infections. www.kentreporter.com [ FIREWORKS from page 1 ] at local fireworks stands. Many of the fireworks sold at Indian reservations stands are illegal in Kent. • When purchasing legal fireworks, look at buying those that do not fly in an uncontrolled manner. • Because of the increased danger of fires, only discharge fireworks on a flat surface and well away from any combustible materials. These include grasses, shrubs, fences, decks and shake roofs. • Keep a garden hose nearby when discharging fireworks and make sure it can reach all parts of the property where the fireworks are being used. • Be a good neighbor when discharging fireworks and do not endanger other people’s property. • Call 911 immediately if vegetation or structures catch fire. Fires will spread very fast with the extremely dry ground conditions. The Kent Police Department also announced last week that it will increase emphasis patrols this year, with teams of officers looking for people illegally discharging fireworks. Kent only allows fireworks to be used on July 4 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fines for illegal fireworks or illegal discharging can be as high as $250 per infraction.
“Each year, we hear about fireworks being illegally discharged in the days leading up to the Fourth of July holiday,” Police Chief Ken Thomas said. “We are deploying additional officers for vigorous enforcement.” City Council President Dana Ralph also encouraged residents to use extra
precautions. “The City Council would urge all of our residents to celebrate the Fourth in a safe and responsible way… If you do decide to light off legal fireworks in Kent we are asking you to use extreme caution and keep yourselves and your neighbors safe.”
