Carnations and a single red rose were placed near the area where a 2-year-old Redmond girl was struck by a car and killed at Redmond Town Center on Wednesday evening. The accident occurred at the intersection of 164th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 74th Street, according to Redmond Police Department (RPD)

Cmdr. Charlie Gorman. “This is a tragic situation for all involved. Our hearts go out to the family of the victim,” said RPD Chief Ron Gibson. A Redmond Town Center representative on scene Thursday morning said the playground would be open that day and they’re taking a look at the area regarding safety issues. RPD and the Redmond Fire Department received the call at

about 4:57 p.m. on Wednesday and were quickly on scene. Gorman said the girl darted out from the nearby playground into the street as the male driver slowed to a stop and struck the girl, who died on scene. The driver, a 25-year-old from Kenmore, cooperated with police and agreed to take a voluntary blood draw. According to an RPD press

release, at this time, drugs and/ or alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the accident. The driver was heading eastbound on 74th and approaching the stop sign at 164th when the accident occurred. According to the RPD release, “the investigation reveals the driver did not have an opportunity to see the child or to stop in time.” [ more GIRL page 5 ]

Locals discuss historic same-sex marriage ruling SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

On June 26, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. Maddy Bennett was at her father’s house when she heard the news — finding out on Facebook as many of her friends were posting about it. And while she wanted to go out and join the celebrations, she had to stay home and take care of her sick dog. “I was really happy,” the 17-year-old incoming Redmond High School senior said.

Bennett is not gay, but she does have gay family members and friends. She said with this decision, it shows them that their love for their significant others is just as real as anyone else’s love.

THE SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE

In addition to being happy that same-sex marriage is legal everywhere, Bennett also imagined telling her future grandchildren about that moment. She said she imagines they would think it was silly that [ more RULING page 5 ]

Sherpa returns from Nepal, continues to support relief efforts SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

It’s been more than two months since the 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, but there is still work to be done for Danu Sherpa. When he first learned about the earthquake on April 25, he caught a flight to return to his home

country that same evening. Sherpa had received a phone call telling him that seven people he knew — including some family members — had died in the earthquake. As previously reported, the 44-year-old City of Redmond employee helped with relief efforts while he was there — both for his

family and others whose homes were destroyed by the earthquakes (a 6.7-magnitude aftershock hit April 26 and smaller-scale quakes of 3.5- and 4.5-magnitude hit Katmandu, Nepal on an almost daily basis). People were in need of shelter, water, food, clothing, blankets and more.

“All I see is destruction,” Sherpa said, recalling what he witnessed in Katmandu, where his relatives live. “It broke my heart. I was very saddened.” Despite his heavy heart, Sherpa said he did not cry because he knew he had to be strong. He added that he felt blessed to be able to help

as many people as he did in Nepal. While Sherpa spent most of his time in Katmandu, he said he traveled to a remote village near Mt. Everest where one of his sisters lived. On his way to the village, he saw many homes that were destroyed in the [ more SHERPA page 6 ]

RFD urges citizens to attend public fireworks displays; fireworks are not allowed in the City of Redmond Redmond Fire Department Chief Tommy Smith is urging citizens to attend one of the many profes-

sional public fireworks displays during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend. Prolonged dry weather and below average spring rainfall have cured grass and vegetation growth, creating more fuel nearly six weeks earlier than normal. There are dozens of professional fireworks displays all over the Puget Sound region, including Redmond’s own fireworks

display at Derby Days at 10 p.m. July 11 on the City Hall campus. “The early onset of very hot and dry weather right before the Fourth of July is creating a dangerous combination,” said Smith. “I want to remind residents that personal fireworks are restricted within city limits.” If you are going to be using fireworks in an

unrestricted area, be sure to remember these safety tips: • Know fireworks laws in the area you are in. • Purchase only legal fireworks. • Ensure the safety of your pets. • Have a bucket of water nearby in which to place all used fireworks. • Keep a water hose or fire extinguisher nearby to put out stray sparks.

Citizens who want to vote in the Aug. 4 primary election have until Monday to register to vote or update voter registration information online or by mail. King County Elections will mail primary election ballots to all registered voters on July 15, so it’s important that citizens register to vote and keep their address and other information, including their signature, updated. The City of Redmond has two propositions on the Aug. 4 ballot:

PROPOSITION NO. 1

The Redmond City Council has passed Resolution No. 1425 (AM) placing public safety and transportation maintenance funding before the voters. This proposition supports critical public and transportation safety needs such as emergency services, school safety, property protection, roadway repair and pedestrian crossings. It authorizes an increase in the regular property tax rate in 2016 of $0.28 per $1,000 of

assessed valuation (AV), for a total rate (if only this proposition passes) of $1.77 per $1,000 of AV. The 2016 levy amount would become the base upon which increases would be computed for the next six years.

PROPOSITION NO. 2

The Redmond City Council has passed Resolution No. 1426 (AM) placing park services funding before the voters. This proposition funds operation and maintenance of park and trail facilities, and park investments in Idylwood, Northeast and Southeast Redmond parks. It authorizes an increase in the regular property tax rate for 2016 of $0.07 per $1,000 of assessed valuation (AV), for a total rate (if only this proposition passes) of $1.56 per $1,000 of AV. The 2016 levy amount would become the base upon which levy increases would be computed for the next six years. Both propositions require a simple majority to pass.

Voters can check to make sure their registration information is current by: • Using My Voter Guide online (https://your.kingcounty.gov/elections2/ voterlookup.aspx) • Calling the Voter Hotline at 206-296-VOTE (8683) Voters who miss the Monday deadline to update their registration should still contact the elections office to update their information for future elections. SCOTUS rules and love wins Louise Chernin

After so many decades of meetings, organizing, strategizing and hoping, it’s hard to wrap our arms around the full impact of the June 26 historic decision. It’s joyous and emotionally overwhelming to hear that SCOTUS, the Supreme Court of the United States, has affirmed, unequivocally that we are equal under the law and that our relationships and marriages will be recognized in every one of the 50 states. For many of us, it’s a day that we could never have imagined. June 26, will be known as the day that changed the future for the LGBT community. With this recognition of our families, there is hope that future generations of parents will no longer have to worry about the safety of their children; children of LGBT parents can un-ambivalently invite both their parents to school events and just perhaps our gay children will no longer feel so much shame and anguish that they commit suicide. Even with the success of Washington’s Referendum 74 in 2012 and then the Supreme Court’s Windsor decision in 2013; even after watching state after state refuse to uphold bans on same-sex marriage, it was not a given that the U.S. Supreme Court would once and for all recognize same-sex marriage as a constitutional right. Perhaps no one could have said it better than Justice Kennedy’s closing paragraph: “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of

Let’s continue to improve the livability of Redmond We have enjoyed a high quality of service from the Redmond Police Department. They want to provide additional community oriented approaches to address neighborhood problems and concerns. They have also provided us with a safe community as more and more residents are walking and bicycling. Let’s support their efforts to continue to provide quality service by voting Yes for Proposition 1. The Redmond Park and Recreation programs have been a key part of making Redmond a livable city. The parks have been enjoyed by residents of all age groups. We have an opportunity to again improve our parks for all to enjoy by supporting Proposition 2. I have lived in Redmond for more than 30 years. I hope you will support the enhancement of the livability in Redmond by voting for propositions 1 and 2 this August.

love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.” Although we have achieved this significant victory, we also recognize that there are still many struggles for the LGBT community in

Media needs to focus more on those who protect our freedoms I must say I am so proud that our Su-

preme Court made the decision to allow gay marriage to be legal in all 50 states. That is truly a milestone. One thing that bothers me though it how the media is treating that decision as a priority over reasons we have such freedom in the first place. It has become a viral thing for members of social media to have a rainbow effect covering their profile picture, and even the White House has a rainbow effect shining on the facade with lights. Seems to me that the service members that die every day for our freedom to even allow such a milestone is less often mentioned in the media. We need to focus more on the ones who give their lives for such freedoms as a priority over the issue itself. Thank you.

We need to declare our independence from the meat industry Nearly 240 years ago, our founding fathers declared our national independence from Great Britain. This Fourth of July, let’s declare our independence from the meat industry. More than 60 percent of U.S. agricultural subsidies pay for meat, dairy and egg pro-

duction. Fresh fruit and vegetable farmers receive less than one percent of the total. It’s time to declare our independence by stopping these subsidies. Our annual medical care expenditures for diseases associated with consumption of animal products are estimated at $300 billion. Much of the cost is borne by our taxes through Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Administration and Obamacare. It’s time to declare our independence by taxing animal products to recover these costs. Currently, the meat industry is getting Congress to gut dietary recommendations by a government-appointed panel of our nation’s top nutritionists. The panel recommended incorporating reduced meat consumption and sustainability of food sources in our dietary guidelines. It’s time to declare our independence by telling the meat industry to butt out of our dietary guidelines. In the meantime, each of us can declare our personal independence from the meat industry by refusing to subsidize it on our next trip to the supermarket.

same-sex marriage was ever illegal at all. Bennett said it makes her happy to know that kids nowadays will understand that families come in all different forms. Michelle Abelev, a 16-year-old Redmond resident who attends International Community School, said with same-sex marriage now legal in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., kids can grow up in an environment in which they can be more open with their sexuality. “Love is love,” she said Abelev said there should not be a divide between gay couples and straight couples, adding that now that same-sex marriage is legal in all states, gay couples can “do anything that anybody else can” and receive the same benefits as straight couples such as receiving health care through their spouse’s insurance. In addition, Abelev said now that all states must recognize same-sex marriages, it could lead to more religions recognizing these unions than previously.

CELEBRATING LOVE

In Redmond, some religion leaders are also in support of the new law. “We are blessed to be part of an incredibly loving community,” said Pastor Todd Puckett of the Redwood Family Church. He continued, saying that the court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide does not change anything for his church. Puckett said their top priority is to love people in Jesus’s name and allow the Holy Spirit of God to do His transforming work in everyone’s lives. Rev. Lara Bolger, the senior pastor at Redmond United Methodist Church, said as a pastor, she celebrates the Supreme Court’s decision for marriage equality nationwide because “any time the law bends towards justice, we all win.” “While marriage is a civic matter, it is also a religious commitment that upholds

and affirms love,” she said. “Justice for all is best exemplified when both civic and religious communities can celebrate and affirm that love. For far too long, we have negated the love of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. Consequently, people continue to feel alienated from church pews and, even worse, feel alienated from the love and grace of God.”

Bolger said she is committed to working toward creating a church community in which all are truly welcome to worship, love, serve and grow. And while she celebrates this legal victory for the LGBTQ community as a sign that society is shifting, she said she is hoping church law can follow suit. “I also know that many other people of faith differ in their opinion on this matter,” Bolger acknowledged. “I hope this decision provides an opportunity for deeper listening and compassion.” Rev. Larry Grounds, senior pastor at Redmond Presbyterian Church (RPC), also acknowledged that the Supreme Court’s decision has been met with differences of opinions. “Some of our members, were no doubt, happy. While others may have been disappointed,” he said. “Last Sunday we simply rejoiced in prayer that people could receive respect and justice equally in our nation. The good news is that this issue no longer divides our congregation.” Grounds said the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which RPC is part of, allows its pastors and churches to officiate in same-sex marriages wherever it is legal in the states they reside — now all states and D.C. Each local church has the responsibility and freedom to decide how they will respond. At RPC, Grounds said they have had their own struggles with homosexuality and five years ago, the church’s leadership came to terms with how they would

n 1980, an African American woman sat on an old dilapidated couch, shaking, as tears flooded her eyes. Legs covered with bruises, terrified, she held her infant daughter, trying to comfort her. Nearby, her four year old was curled in a fetal position, moaning softly. The floor was littered with a broken lamp, patches of hair, torn clothing, and crushed cereal. All grim reminders of her husband’s violence a few minutes ago. He was a 7 ft. 2” tall minister. She remembered him putting his face close, his fists tight, as he knocked her to the ground. Her belly tightened with pain, fear, and dread for what he would do next. He yelled, “You little whore! Don’t you know I’m head of the house, and you have to do what I tell you! If you ever try to leave me again, I’ll kill us all!”

Temporarily alone, she called a 24-hour Domestic Violence Hotline, and found connections to a network of advocates who provided the tools and resources she needed to become a survivor. Three very strong and brave African American senior women of faith were also always there to encourage and support her. The great combination of helpers was a key ingredient in rediscovering her own voice, and learning that she deserved to be treated right. I was that woman, and you too can make a difference in your own life, as well as others. [ SHERPA from page 1] earthquakes. Sherpa said as he passed these homes, he would give the families who had lived there about $150 each to help them. The money was raised from an online fundraising website at www.gofundme. com/dollarsfordanu. After about seven weeks in Nepal, Sherpa returned to the Pacific Northwest last month — returning to his job with the Parks and Recreation Department on June 17. And while he is back, Sherpa is not done helping. He said he is still working to raise money to support relief efforts in Nepal. When Sherpa first

www.redmond-reporter.com traveled to Katmandu in April, Eric O’Neal, one of Sherpa’s colleagues at the city, set up the fundraising website. The money raised was initially used to help Sherpa and his family in Nepal. According to the fundraising website, Sherpa “will no longer use donated funds for his family, 17 adopted kids or the three elderly and one partially paralyzed person he is helping. He has decided to personally fund these people from his own income.” Now they are raising money to build a school in Katmandu. Sherpa said the school

will have five or six classrooms and be big enough for about 100 students. The kids will range from 5-10 years old. For Sherpa, the whole situation is sad — he and his family lost their house in the earthquake — and he said he just wants to make things better by building this school. Currently, the fundraising website notes that a goal has been set to $50,000. O’Neal said while Sherpa was in Nepal, the goal had been set at $25,000. He said Sherpa estimates the cost of the school to be between $25,000$30,000, which is why the fundraising goal has increased. Currently, about $21,000 has been raised, but O’Neal said that is the amount that has been donated since the beginning of the fundraiser and most has been used up while Sherpa was in Nepal. The money that is collected from this point on will go toward the school, he said. “In the coming days and weeks we will refine the vision and perhaps seek out professional assistance with plans and drawings,” states the website, which was written by O’Neal. “We are also investigating the possibility of creating a nonprofit organization to formalize this effort. While there are many details to work out, I am confident in Danu’s ability to get things done. If he says it is going to happen, it will happen.”

people to seek Christ first and to respect that others who do the same may have differing views on ethical issues, such as this one we are considering.”

A GREAT DAY FOR AMERICANS

Local and national lawmakers from the area also weighed in on the Supreme Court’s landmark decision. King County Council Vice Chair Jane Hague — who represents unincorporated King County near Redmond — said June 26 was a good day for all Americans. “Clearly, as a nation, we have moved beyond this as a partisan issue. This is about celebrating the love of two people, wherever they live in this country,” she said. “Civil rights, and gay rights in particular,

are an important part of what makes the United States great — what makes it a place where people want to come and live from all over the world.” Hague’s fellow council member and Vice Chair Joe McDermott also released a statement on the court’s decision. “I’m thrilled to join the jubilation across our country for (last Friday’s) decision,” his statement reads. “From today forward, couples across the nation will be able to marry legally and be recognized as a family in the eyes of the law, just like Washington families, including myself and my husband Michael. Today, there is more love in the world, and that is a good thing!” And while area lawmakers praised the deci-

sion, some also acknowledged that there is more work to be done. “This is a landmark ruling that puts the United States on the right side of history and makes a meaningful difference in the lives of millions of Americans,” said Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) in a statement. “I’m pleased the Court recognized what Washingtonians have known for years — that love is love and all couples deserve equality under our laws. While this is a major victory, more must be done to end discriminatory laws and ensure full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. Our work is far from over and we need to continue fighting until all Americans have equal rights and protections.”

For kids who want to play baseball, there’s Little League; if they’re interested in football, there’s Pop Warner; and if soccer is more their style, there’s a league for that, as well. But for those kids who enjoy video games, there have not been many opportunities for them to play with others in a team environment — until now.

Redmond Reporter

INTRODUCING THE LEAGUE

Brett Morris saw this with his kids, who enjoyed playing video games but also loved sports. He and two other fathers wondered why there was not some sort of social environment for gamers. So together in 2014, they founded Super League Gaming (SLG) — an interactive video game league with events that take place in movie theaters. SLG recently kicked off a summer tour with events

being held throughout the country. On Monday, the tour stopped in Redmond Town Center at iPic Theater, giving kids the opportunity to meet and play with other gamers and possibly make some friends. “It’s become of a social event more than a gaming event,” said Morris, who is the SLG president and chief operating officer. This was the third week of the tour and he said the will be in 87 theaters by the end of summer. The Seattle area was their third leg of the trip. Morris said they started in Los Angeles, where SLG was founded. During these one-off events, participants are playing “Minecraft,” which features a multiplayer mode so they can play together in teams. The teams are made up of players within the theater and the kids play on their own laptops (SLG also has a few laptops on hand for those who do not have one or if technical difficulties arise). In addition, significant moments of gameplay and other points of interest are highlighted and featured on the big screen.

Kids and teens of all ages attended Monday’s SLG event at iPic in Redmond. For cousins Aiden Hart, 7, and Dylan Severson, 8, they were excited to be able to play with others in person. “This is cool because you’re in the same room,” said Aiden. The Newcastle resident explained that they usually don’t get to meet the other gamers they play with online. Aiden’s father Robert Hart said he learned about the event from The Seattle Times. He knew his son and nephew (who lives in Bellevue) play “Minecraft” almost on a daily basis and agreed with his son, saying being in the same room as the other gamers and meeting new people and making friends was “the best part” of Monday’s event. Redmond holds 75th Derby Days July 10-11 Redmond will celebrate the 75th Annual Redmond Derby Days Summer Festival from 4-10 p.m. July 10 and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 11 at Redmond City Hall Campus, 15670 N.E. 85th St. Back after popular demand, Friday Night Live starts off the fun at 4 p.m. First Tech sponsors the evening as The Polyrhythmics, a dynamic world-beat orchestra with a horn-driven funk and modern afro beat opens the night. Friday Night Live’s headliner is Cambulache, the area’s premier Salsa band that lays down infectious Latin rhythms. On Saturday, start the day off with the Derby Days Kids Parade, the longest-running kids’ parade in the nation. Since the first parade in 1940, Redmond’s children have decorated their wheels in this family tradition. Parade sign-in begins at 9 a.m. in the Opportunity Building parking lot, 8383 158th Ave. N.E. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. Birthday-themed decorations are encouraged this year. The Grand Parade immediately follows the Kids Parade. New this year are free fun community races for all ages to follow the Grand Parade. Seventy-five yards of tricycle riding, costume races and more. The Criterium, the nation’s longest running bicycle race, starts at 2 p.m., and the last race is at 7:15 p.m.

Other festival elements include; Fire Department Pancake Breakfast, Derby Dash 5k and Redmond Art Festival at Redmond Town Center. The ever-popular Northwest Carnival runs from July 10-11 at Redmond City Hall Campus along 160th Avenue Northeast. A new element to Derby Days, the Street Scramble, is an urban adventure that encourages teams and individuals to find as many map checkpoints in Redmond as possible before time runs out. It is a free adventure, but people must register at www.redmondderbydays.com. Bring a blanket or beach chair, settle in on the grass and enjoy entertainment all day and night from the main stage. The evening headliner, Heart by Heart, will take the stage at 8 p.m. The band includes Heart’s co-founding member and bassist Steve Fossen and original Heart drummer Mike Derosier, both members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They will move and groove the crowd with 1980s Heart songs with power and precision. The Redmond Craft Breweries Beer Garden opens at noon and is located close to the stage; fans can enjoy a beer and take in the sounds. At 10 p.m., a spectacular fireworks display sponsored by R-Trip will finish off the evening.

And just like other sports leagues, there will be a leader board in which players can see where they stack up against each other. Morris added that unlike in traditional sports leagues, the leader board is not restricted by geography and kids can see where they rank among teams from around the country and world. SLG seasons will last six weeks, with participants playing once a week — typically on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. SLG players will also receive jerseys representing their teams — just as kids in other sports leagues. And instead of a baseball field or soccer pitch, Morris said, their field is the theater.

ALTERNATIVE CONTENT

SLG has partnered with Regal Entertainment Group, AMC Theatres and Cinemark Theatres, in addition to iPic Theaters to bring their interactive video game league to the masses. “The theaters have been terrific,” Morris said. “They have been great partners.” At iPic in Redmond, Steven Minear, the day event manager, said iPic offered a kids’ food menu for participants, although they were able to order from the theater’s regular menu, as well. When the theater first opened, it was a 21-and-older establishment, but Minear said they changed to an allages theater about a year and a half ago. He said iPic has hosted other events for younger audiences such as a sleepover for a group of graduating high school seniors, but Monday’s event was the first time they had held anything that did not include an actual movie screening. Morris said theater companies are open to hosting events and groups such as SLG because they realize they cannot rely on just movie studios for their business anymore. The companies know they have to find more content and alternative content such as video games to feature on their big screens in order to stay relevant and bring in customers. “They want to be known as the entertainment source,” Morris said about the companies’ willingness to host SLG. For more information about SLG, visit superleague. com.

was a large part of the appeal for many people. “I loved the idea of being in a theater, playing ‘Minecraft,’” said 14-year-old Lulu Corona of Woodinville about what attracted her to the event. “It sounded amazing.” Corona attended with her friend Danieka Beck, who also thought it would be interesting to play in the same room as others and see their reactions to the game. For Sammamish resident Rod Chang, bringing his daughters — 10-year-old Elsie and 12-year-old Emily — to the event was an opportunity for them to socialize with others. “It’s more than the game,” he said about the event.

A DIFFERENT PLAYING FIELD

Morris said this opportunity for friendship is one of the reasons he and his fellow co-founders created SLG. In addition, he said SLG also gives young gamers the chance to part of a team and somewhere to belong. In the fall, participants will be able to form teams to compete against other teams in various multiplayer games such as “League of Legends” and “Clash of Clans.”
