FBI reviewing investigation of jailhouse death

Boats run aground off North Whidbey North Whidbey Fire and Rescue responded to two boats that ran aground Monday afternoon on the north end of Whidbey Island. A 40-foot boat ran aground on rocks near Deception Pass and later that afternoon, another craft got stuck north of Strawberry Point. Rescuers waited near the boats to make sure everyone on board was OK and neither vessel was taking on water, said Deputy Chief Mike Brown. U.S. Coast Guard had issued a warning to boats in the Deception Pass area to keeps speed low so the boat hung up on the rocks wasn’t damaged. Both boats were freed by the high tide. Brown didn’t know the particular plans of these boat owners but he noted that there are more boats in local waters because it’s crabbing season. “There may be people out there who don’t know the area as well and are running into shallow waters,” he said.

Motorcyclist killed in ‘Suspicious’ fires scorch South Whidbey accident near bridge By JUSTIN BURNETT and EVAN THOMPSON

By JESSIE STENSLAND Co-editor

The Island County coroner has released the name of a motorcyclist killed near Deception Pass Bridge on July 3. Robin Lindgren, 42, a Bow resident, died at the scene of the traffic collision, Island County Coroner Robert Bishop said. Lindgren was riding a 2002 Honda motorcycle alongside a friend on another motorcycle. They were headed north on State Highway 20. Leslie McMahan, 50, of Edmonds, was also driving north, just in front of the motorcyclists, in a 1999 Ford F-150 truck, according to a Washington State Patrol report. She stopped on the highway to turn into the parking lot just before the bridge. The motorcyclists were unable to stop in time to avoid a collision.

The male motorcyclist reported to investigators that he veered right and Lindgren went left to avoid the truck. He said her handle bar hit the back corner of the truck and she was thrown onto the pavement in the other lane of traffic, according to Bishop. Lindgren was struck by an oncoming 2001 Ford Ranger driven by Nelson Root, 19, of Oak Harbor, the State Patrol reported. She died instantly, the coroner said. Brian Farrett, 49, of Edmonds, was a passenger in the Ford F-150 truck. Lindgren was wearing a helmet. The State Patrol reported that inattention was the cause of the crash. Bishop said there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident, but toxicology results are pending.

A series of brushfires on South Whidbey last week have been officially deemed suspicious and are under investigation by police. Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said the causes remain unknown, but certain factors made it difficult to positively rule out foul play, particularly the number of fires involved. Investigators say as many as eight fires were started along less than a mile-long stretch of State Highway 525. Several leads were eliminated early on but the department has received no new information and has no suspects. “It is highly suspicious and I would urge anyone with information to call us,” Brown said. Brown credits firefighters with a stellar response, saying their efforts may have saved several buildings in the area from destruction. “This had the potential of ballooning up into a real

Firefighters battle a grass fire on South Whidbey last week. disaster,” Brown said. “Thank God for them.” The fires began shortly after noon on Friday, July 3 on the south side of the state route between Scott Road and the Eagle’s Aerie past Double Bluff Road. They combined to form three fires that South Whidbey Fire/EMS officials are calling the largest brushfire fought on the South End since the 1990s. According to Mike Cotton, deputy chief for South Whidbey Fire/EMS, it scorched about 15 acres of grassland, damaged power lines and power poles, and threatened a number of buildings. Multiple island and

state agencies responded to the emergency, it caused heavy traffic delays along Highway 525 and even resulted in some residents leaving their homes as a precautionary measure. Driving southbound on Highway 525, he counted eight fires between Scott Road and the aerie. Several buildings were at risk, including the Eagles lodge and a couple of homes. Firefighters initially focused their efforts around these structures. Fire officials didn’t order any home evacuations, but some people decided to retreat to a safe distance

when warned by firefighters. Others got involved. Dennis and Joyce Bennett, whose motor home was positioned behind the Eagles, said they heard sirens just before noon. When they came to investigate, the fire was well underway. The couple moved sprinklers near the grassland to assist firefighters. “I never expected anything like this,” Joyce said. The majority of the fire was under control within 45 minutes, but firefighters spent about three hours working to extinguish hot spots. Some state firefighters were still doing mop up as of 7:30 p.m. The incident and the subsequent highway closure resulted in heavy traffic delays; motorists were reportedly asked to avoid the highway because of backups. The fires come on the heels of a recent burn ban issued by Brown, who is also the county’s fire marshal, and a proclamation by the Island County commissioners that urged the public to exercise extreme caution with fireworks this year due to hot weather and low moisture levels.

Timeline brings together mystery of body on beach By JESSIE STENSLAND Co-editor

An Orcas Island man whose body washed up on a North Whidbey beach June 23 died from saltwater drowning, the Island County coroner ruled. David Fleischmann, 66, was last seen alive on board a ferry headed to Anacortes, Coroner Robert Bishop reported. A beach-goer found Fleischmann’s body in the surf off of Moran Beach at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 24. His car was later found parked at the ferry terminal on Orcas Island. Bishop said the timing of the death was initially a mystery because an employee at Madrona Bar and Grill restaurant, Fleischmann’s workplace on Orcas Island, reported seeing him at noon on Wednesday, June 24. The employee later realized that it had actually been Tuesday, June 23, when Fleischmann was at the restaurant. Washington State Ferries video shows Fleischmann getting on the 10:30 p.m. sailing from Orcas Island to Anacortes. Fleischmann is seen several times on the ferry; he was last seen around 11:40 p.m. as he is walking to the back of the vessel. Fleischmann did not get off the ferry when it docked in Anacortes.

The route from Oak Harbor currently travels to March Point in Skagit County, where riders can transfer to a Skagit Transit bus to Mount Vernon. The route is currently scheduled to end Aug. 3. While the state money may save the routes, Almberg said it doesn’t solve the longterm issue. He and the other members of the board argue that it doesn’t make sense — and isn’t fair — for Island

Talking or Stalking?

D

oes this sound familiar? “Why won’t you answer my texts or calls??? I just like to know where you are and who you’re with because I worry about you.” This may sound like a concerned and worried partner but it could also be classified as stalking. Where is the line between talking & stalking? Know your line. Being able to identify these red flags in not only your own relationship but in others’ too can help prevent domestic violence. Domestic violence is often only associated with physical abuse, and while that can be a significant part in some relationships, there are also many other more subtle ways that people are being manipulated and controlled in abusive relationships. These obsessive and manipulative behaviors are far more common and widespread than anyone realizes, and, are far less talked about. Often, it is the indirect and insidious behaviors that are many times brushed under the rug or written off and yet, those are the very tools that many abusers use to form a tight cocoon around their victims. Those subtle behaviors, known as red flags, can be difficult to pinpoint to the average person. Understanding the line between talking and stalking is essential, because many people can’t see unhealthy behaviors in their own relationship and need a friend to help them realize the warning signs. CADA is here to help people learn those warning signs. Citizens Against Domestic & Sexual Abuse, CADA, is Island County’s domestic violence and sexual assault agency. We provide free, confidential assistance for anyone affected by these issues. Services include a 24/7 crisis line, crisis intervention, advocacy-based counseling, legal advocacy, community education & prevention, medical advocacy, emergency shelter, support groups and parenting classes. familiar storefront in historic downtown Oak Harbor has changed its name, shuffled ownership and brought in new inventory. But three familiar faces will remain behind the counter. Red’s Boutique is the new name for Wild Magnolia. Last week, Lonnie Schopen took over as the store’s owner. The Wild Magnolia line of products, however, are remaining as are Sandy Merriman and Brenda Pike, the previous owners. Merriman and Pike are scaling back their time commitment while still serving the customers who got them into the business five years ago. “It’s three women who have a dream and love people,” said Schopen. “We’re mostly about making people happy and making people smile.” The red-haired Schopen is the “Red” behind the newly

The store is expanding its women’s clothing lines, including plus sizes. “That’s my goal: fashion, affordability, color for everybody,” Schopen said. “We try to reach everyone.” Merriman and Pike started operating the Pioneer Way store as partners five years ago and began renting space to Schopen last year to feature some of the clothing lines she sells. It appeared the business might close in the spring after Pike announced her plans to retire. However, the three women put their heads together and came up with a plan to keep the store open seven days a week. Schopen is now sole proprietor, allowing Merriman and Pike to work part-time. “We’re kind of reversing roles with Lonnie,” Merriman said. “Essentially, it allows us to be able to spend more time with family and still be involved.”

CONTINUED FROM A1 the FBI will defer any possible criminal prosecution to the local prosecuting attorney’s office,” she wrote in an email. Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks said he is also conducting a complete review of the case in order to determine if any crimes were committed. While he said many people have called on him to file charges immediately, he said the process will take time and the outcome at this point is unclear. “Decisions to prosecute must be made based upon the admissible evidence and a thorough analysis of the law and procedures that govern our criminal courts,” he said. THE COMPLETE investigation includes hundreds of pages of supporting documentation as well as video and other evidence. Banks said he may ask detectives to do additional investigation. In addition, Banks said he’ll want to see the report from an independent expert the sheriff is bringing in to conduct a comprehensive review of the jail and its policies. He said that is likely to be at least a couple months away. COUPEVILLE RESIDENT Fred Farris, Keaton’s father, said he’s pleased to hear about the FBI’s involvement and hopes it brings about criminal charges. “I think the more people who look at

He said he continually hears from people who have stories about problems at the jail, both systemic failures and unprofessional conduct by jail personnel. Fred Farris and other family members organized a march through Coupeville after Wallace’s report was released. Every day since then, volunteers have continued protesting in front of the jail. FRIENDS AND family marched for Keaton Farris during a Fourth of July parade on Lopez Island, where the young man lived for most of his life. Fred Farrow said they held a “Justice for All” banner and handed out water bottles. Fred Farris said his son’s death was nothing short of murder perpetrated by the people who were supposed to be keeping him safe. “I don’t know what else it could be, honestly,” he said. “If they did this to a dog, it would be a felony crime.” WALLACE’S 51-PAGE report outlines a complicated series of failures that began when Keaton Farris was picked up by Burlington police March 20 on a check-fraud warrant out of San Juan County. He was in the midst of a mental health crisis and had sought medical help earlier that day. After being transferred to several different jails, he ended up alone in a

He was given water during his meals, but Wallace calculated that it was only a fraction of the amount necessary to survive. The staff did not check on him as often as dictated. Jail logs didn’t include necessary information and observations; the supervisors didn’t follow policy by checking the logs, Wallace wrote. MEDICAL STAFF wasn’t called to examine Farris until the day before he died. The nurse only talked to him briefly through the “feed slot” in the cell door and didn’t relate any concerns she might have to jail staff. The jail staff was supposed to check on Keaton Farris hourly. The last time a corrections deputy confirmed that he was alive was 5:30 p.m. April 7. A corrections deputy tapped on his cell at 8:30 p.m. but didn’t get a response; Wallace wrote that he was likely dead at that point. Corrections deputies discovered that Keaton Farris was dead at 12:30 a.m., April 8. Two corrections deputies falsified their logs after the death was discovered, Wallace wrote. Both men resigned. Island County Sheriff Mark Brown fired the supervising lieutenant at the jail. Chief De Dennis, the jail administrator, resigned. Milat was born in Yugoslavia (Croatia) in 1929 and immigrated with his family to Anacortes, which boasted a Croatian immigrant community. He didn’t know a word of English when he entered first grade but quickly became bilingual. He met his wife, Carolyn Lunsford, at a skating rink in Anacortes. He graduated from Anacortes High School in 1947. He skippered his own fishing boat in Alaska and then was drafted to the

He remained patriotic his entire life, the type of man who stood at attention during parades when the flag passed by, hat off and hand on his heart. His family lovingly nicknamed him “Captain America.” Milat earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degrees in education at Western Washington University. He began his teaching career in Oak Harbor in 1958 at Oak Harbor Elementary School and served 30 years as a teacher and principal. IN OUR OPINION Tuition reduction bill an investment in all of our futures It’s no secret that the rising cost of tuition at state colleges and universities has made it increasingly hard for high school graduates in Washington state to take the next step in their education. For those who do get into college, far too many are swimming in financially crippling debt by the time they graduate. College students in Washington state currently graduate with an average of more than $20,000 in student debt. It often can take years to climb out from under that financial burden. In response, during the waning days of the legislative session, lawmakers approved an unprecedented reduction in college tuition. Senate Bill 5954, deemed the “College Affordability Program,” is a welcome step in lowering the obstacles for those graduates wanting to go to college and in easing their long-term financial burden. The measure was signed this week by Gov. Jay Inslee. Among those looking on at the signing ceremony was Republican Sen. Barbara Bailey of Oak Harbor. Bailey is chairwoman of the Senate Higher Education Committee. She was also a co-sponsor of the measure The College Affordability Program cuts tuition at staterun colleges and universities by up to 20 percent and caps tuition growth based on a percentage of the state’s median wage. “This is a historic moment for families and students in our state,” said Bailey. “Washington is the only state in the country to support working families with a college tuition reduction. “In addition, this is the first tuition reduction in state history,” Bailey said. “The lack of investment in Washington’s higher-education system has been detrimental to our state’s economy and damaging to family budgets struggling to cover ever-increasing tuition,” Bailey said in a prepared news release. We agree. In effectively making the cost of higher education prohibitive for many, we reduced the pool of future employees and leaders during a time when our aging workforce is moving toward retirement. Increased access to a higher education bodes well for a generation that needs to be mentally armed and ready to take on the challenges of our evolving job market. So, for that, we thank Sen. Bailey and the rest of the state Legislature for improving the chances of putting our children through college without completely breaking the bank.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Jets

Impressive roar is the sound of freedom Editor, “I will never get over the sheer and utter coolness of living someplace where fighter jets perform maneuvers over your head on any given day. That roar is one of the most impressive sounds of freedom that I know.” This is a quote from the Facebook page of a friend who doesn’t live on Whidbey Island. Instead, she lives near where the Navy and Air Force share airspace on a daily basis, Hampton, Va. and Norfolk, Va. She posted, “When I visit my son and his family, who live on Langley Air Force Base, I see the excitement my young grandchildren exhibit watching these impressive planes soar above them. I wake up to the sounds of jet engines starting up.” Whidbey Island has been my home for 20 years. I never really gave airplane noise much notice until it became such a volatile issue. I love living on Whidbey Island. Jet

noise is loud but, as the quote above states, that roar is one of the most impressive sounds of freedom that I know. Pat Denny Oak Harbor

Fireworks

It may be a ‘right,’ but it’s dangerous Editor, This July 4 was marked by the most extreme fire danger in many years, and still people chose to buy and explode personal fireworks because it is their “right.” The rationale was that they would be careful and responsible, and thanks to most who were. The problem is that fire is not careful and responsible and, in conditions like we are currently experiencing, mere embers can explode into flames many hours after they’ve landed. The home where our son took his first steps in the mountains east of San Diego is nothing but a concrete pad to this day as the result of a tragic brushfire. People who have not actually lost

a home filled with memories may not fully comprehend the lasting magnitude of this experience. While other communities simply banned fireworks, we here were left to our devices. Neighbors who chose not to shoot fireworks in the interest of fire safety were right next to neighbors who did in the interest of tradition and entertainment. Plus, people came over from locales that had banned fireworks to buy and shoot them here, adding to the potential burden of our own dedicated firefighters. Maybe the organizations that sell fireworks could take more responsibility for hosting safety meetings, or circulating safety information, particularly when public officials are practically begging people not to use fireworks due to high fire danger. Or maybe elected officials could put public safety rather than political expedience first when potential fire conditions reach record-breaking levels. At any rate, the issue demands real leadership from somebody, so no one here is ever left with the smoldering vestige of a home as the result of our celebration of independence. Bainbridge became home port as the government sent them to Naval Stations in Hawaii, twice to Atsugi, Japan, and Rota, Spain, returning to Bainbridge between each overseas assignment. John retired in 1995. That same year, he and Jackie began building a retirement home on Whidbey Island

Milat

Mike S. Milat

Longtime Oak Harbor resident Mike S. Milat died in his home on Friday, July 3, surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born in Velaluka, Yugoslavia (Croatia) on Nov. 21, 1929, to Donko and Mara Milat. In 1932, the Milat family immigrated to the U.S. following friends and family from Velaluka to Anacortes. He began the first grade at Whitney Elementary not knowing a word of English, but soon became bilingual, which served him well throughout his life. After graduating from Anacortes High School in 1947, Mike worked for a number of years in the salmon fishing industry, making numerous trips to Alaska, where he skippered his own purse-seiner, the PAFCO #10. In 1951, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and reached the rank of sergeant while serving throughout the southern U.S. One interesting memory of his Army service involved his witnessing an atom bomb test in Nevada with his Army unit. Later, in the 1950s and early 1960s, Mike served in the U.S. Army Reserve where he attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Mike met the love of his life, Carolyn Lunsford, at a skating rink in Anacortes in 1945 while they were both in high school. Not long after his discharge from the Army, Carolyn and Mike were married on November 28, 1953. Mike took advantage of the GI Bill and enrolled in college at Western Washington University, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, along with his principal’s certification. He began his teaching career in Oak Harbor in 1958 at Oak Harbor Elementary and would eventually become an elementary school principal in 1964. Mike retired from his career in education in 1988 after 30 years, where he served as principal of Crescent Harbor and Olympic View Elementary

Schools. Mike served on the Oak Harbor City Council for 24 years acting as mayor protem for 20 years. During his time on the council, he was a strong influence in the construction of the Oak Harbor Marina. He was also a proud Rotarian with 50 years of perfect attendance and served as the Oak Harbor Rotary Club’s President in 19741975. Mike was also a faithful parishioner at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church during his 55 years of residence in Oak Harbor and served on the Board of Directors of the Oak Harbor Senior Center. Mike was a deeply proud and fiercely patriotic American who never missed an opportunity to fly the American flag at his home or stand at attention in local parades as the flag passed by. He and Carolyn enjoyed many years of fun-filled boating and fishing in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. Later, they enjoyed summers on the Skagit River and winters in Arizona with their RV. Crabbing was always a great adventure for Mike as he took great delight in distributing his crab catch to appreciative friends and family. Mike is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Milat, and his three children and their spouses, Anne and Ron Tarrant of Oak Harbor, Nick and Suzanne Milat of Black Diamond and Mark and Carol Milat of Auburn. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Sarah, Michael, Daniel and Alexandra Milat and his sisters Mary Dragovich, Betty (Will) Haney and Linda (Jim) Olson. Mike is also survived by his extended family that includes numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, his many friends and his faithful yellow lab, Babe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Oak Harbor Rotary Mike Milat Excellence in Education Scholarship. Interment is planned for a later date at the Tahoma National Cemetery. Visitation for Mike Milat will be held on Friday, July 10, at Wallin Funeral Home from 1 to 5 p.m. with a rosary being said at 4 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Rev. Paul G. Pluth, JCL as celebrant. A reception for family and friends will follow at Wallin Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, at a later date. Little League teams playing strong this season By JIM WALLER Staff Reporter

Local Little League teams are off to a good start, capturing two of the three district tournaments completed so far and picking up berths in the state playoffs with the district titles. The North Whidbey Junior (13/14) team, coached by Ryan McCarthy, won both of its district games in Anacortes to lift its record to 17-0 and qualify for the state tournament to be played at the Glenwood Little League complex in Vancouver starting July 19. The Central Whidbey 9/10 softball team, coached by Mimi Johnson, overcame a loss in the first round to North Whidbey to win the District 11 crown in Mount Vernon. Its state tournament is also on the Glenwood fields beginning July 11. Two more Little League divisions began district play this week. The 9/10 baseball playoffs are in Oak Harbor at Windjammer Park. North Whidbey played Tuesday; results were not available at press time. Host Sedro-Woolley defeated North Whidbey 9-4 in the first round of the 10/11 baseball tournament Monday. North Whidbey will play a loser-out game at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Junior Baseball North Whidbey used late surges to collect its two wins. Thursday, July 2, it scored seven runs in the sixth inning on the way to defeating South Skagit 15-7. Saturday, July 4, it wrapped up the championship by scoring seven runs over the final two innings to rip Anacortes 12-2. In the win over Anacortes, Ethan Cosper led the lategame explosion with a threerun home run. The Wildcats wasted little time taking the lead. In the top of the first, Jakob Dailey and Jason Bergeron singled. After an out, Bergeron stole second, went to third on a passed ball and then scored on a single by Nathanael Thompson. After Anacortes tied the game with a run in the second inning, North Whidbey went up 5-1 with a four-run third.

Below, North Whidbey first baseman Emily Wilson stretches to make a play at first base in Friday’s softball game. With one out, Bergeron and Thompson singled. Bergeron scored on an error and Thompson was driven home on a single by McCarthy. David Sisson walked with two outs, then Jacob PalbickiHoover ripped a two-run triple. Anacortes scored once in the bottom of the third to make it 5-2 and was still in the game, then North Whidbey scored four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. In the fifth,   Aiden McCarthy singled and Cosper tripled for one run. Cosper scored on David Sisson’s sacrifice fly center field. Devin Day walked and scored on Luke Golden’s triple, then Golden scored on Johnny Bradley’s groundout. In the sixth, Thompson and McCarthy walked with one out, then Cosper blasted a home run to left to cap the scoring. North Whidbey pitcher McCarthy held Anacortes scoreless in the sixth, striking out the final two batters, to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. McCarthy pitched a fivehitter, striking out 10 and walking only two. He was also one of the hitting stars, finishing with three

hits, three runs, an RBI and seven stolen bases. Cosper, Daily, Bergeron and Thompson each collected two hits.

9/10 Softball After Central Whidbey lost 11-10 to North Whidbey in the opening round, it had to win three straight to wrap up the championship. First it defeated SedroWoolley 12-6 Thursday, then it needed to stop North Whidbey twice. Friday, Central Whidbey won 20-10, and then took the title with a

15-8 win Saturday. In the first win over North Whidbey, Central Whidbey went up 7-1, then North Whidbey came back to tie the game with six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Central Whidbey recovered and controlled the game from that point. Central Whidbey scored two runs in the first inning when Kaia Richmond and McKaela Meffert walked and scored on wild pitches. North Whidbey scored once in the bottom of the second inning when Abby Ries walked and advanced on three wild pitches.

Central Whidbey used six walks and a single by Larue to score five runs in the top of the third. North Whidbey tied the game with six runs in its half when It blended three walks with hits by Lily McCollum, Britney Day, Emily Wilson and Emily Steinke. Central Whidbey strong finish started with five runs in the fourth. Meffert doubled, Isabelle Wells and Abby Mulholland singled, and four teammates walked to fuel the big inning. Three walks, another Meffert double and singles by Wells and Mckenna Somes led to four runs in the fifth inning. In the sixth, two walks and singles by Meffert, Chanel Sterba and Somes produced four more runs. North Whidbey scored once in the fourth on base hits by Steinke, Ries and McCollum. A single by Rallye Chambers and three walks created two runs for North Whidbey in the fifth. Meffert led all batters with three hits. Wells, Sterba and Somes each had two for Central Whidbey. Steinke, McCollum and Chambers singled twice for North Whidbey. Central Whidbey was aided by 21 walks. Central Whidbey set off its own fireworks with an 11-run fourth inning to come from behind and defeat North Whidbey 15-9 in the championship game Saturday. Down 8-4, Central Whidbey sent 14 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored 11 runs with the help of 10 walks and two hits by Meffert. North Whidbey, coached by Tashina Tosh, started the game with two runs in the first inning. Wilson led off with a walk and scored after several stolen bases and passed balls. Hits by Isabella Whalen and McCollum accounted for the second run. Central Whidbey immediately responded with three runs on an error, walk and hits by Richmond and Sterba. In the second inning, North Whidbey tallied five times, blending three walks with hits by Abigail Andersen and Wilson. Central Whidbey scored once in its half of the inning

when Richmond walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch. After a scoreless third inning, North Whidbey went up 8-4 in the fourth with a run on hits by Steinke, Peyton Samek and McCollum. Central Whidbey followed with its 11-run explosion and held on for the win. North Whidbey could muster only one more run off of fifth-inning hits by Andersen and Steinke.

10/11 Baseball First-game jitters got the best of North Whidbey in its round-one loss, according to coach Kevin Rhew. The top of the first should have been a three-up, three-down inning, be said, but several errors allowed Sedro-Woolley to score three runs. North Whidbey countered with four runs in its half of the first. Jackson Biggs led off with a walk and eventually scored on a passed ball. With two outs, Tyler Zenger doubled, Brady Towsley reached on interference and Marshall Rhew walked to load the bases, and then Aidan Golden cleared them with a double. After the big first inning, Sedro-Woolley changed pitchers and the new hurler was “lights out,” according to coach Rhew, allowing no hits, striking out 11 and walking only two. Sedro-Woolley scored single runs in the second and sixth innings with the help of North Whidbey walks and errors. The winners scored three runs in the fourth on a home run by Baker Sparks. North Whidbey used five pitchers (Shawn Day, Biggs, Chandler Gisvold, Joe Winnenberg and Cody Duchnowski), and all threw well, according to Rhew. The defensive highlight, Rhew said, was catcher Brock Boyer’s “absolute bullet” to shortstop Duchnowski that cut down a Sedro-Woolley runner trying to steal second base. “I hope we got the firstgame jitters out of the way and come back strong on defense when we play (next),” Rhew said. “We have the talent to bounce back and win this tournament, and I believe we’ll do just that.”

Patriotism abounds as 4,000 gather for Oak Harbor’s July 4th event By DEBRA VAUGHN Staff reporter

This is a Fourth of July parade in Oak Harbor: two EA-18G Growlers buzzing downtown, wings tipped in salute; lawn chairs and blankets lining waterfront streets; thousands of flags flapping in clutched hands; young couples strolling, hands squeezed together; little girls in bright sundresses; children scrambling for wrapped sweets; babies in arms, babies in strollers, babies everywhere; dogs in bandanas, tongues lolling; spit-shined rescue trucks and farm tractors chugging; politicians in classic rides offering a wave and a smile;

The parade featured some classic rides.

Oak Harbor High School spirit also was in the air.

an honor guard strutting, flags lofted high; a tractor hauling a life-sized portrait of Jesus; leather-clad bikers on rumbling hogs; a marching band, a mariachi band, bagpipers in kilts; and pageant princesses in gowns sitting tall in a convertible. Saturday morning nearly 4,000 people attended the parade, a decades-long tradition. Oak Harbor Noon Rotary Club and the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event.

TV time, national exposure brewing at Whidbey Coffee By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

Dan Ollis can be seen smiling a lot these days. Aside from appearing in his first television commercial recently, Ollis also is happy about his Whidbey Coffee Company brand getting a taste of the national market. Spokane-based Red Lion Hotels Corporation announced Tuesday that Whidbey Coffee will be served in the lobbies of Red Lion Hotels and Red Lion Inn & Suites within the next two months.

Ollis said it marks the first time that Whidbey Coffee’s brand is branching out on a large scale beyond the state of Washington. “We don’t have a lot of customers out of state,” said Ollis, who grew up on South Whidbey. “This account will change that for Whidbey Coffee. It’s fun news. Now the big work starts.” Ollis owns 12 Whidbey Coffee retail stores in Snohomish, Skagit and Island counties, including four on Whidbey Island. Two stores

are in Oak Harbor. Ollis’ alliance with Red Lion also includes his Seattle-based Victrola Coffee Roasters brand, which will be served in lobbies of other Red Lion hotels such as Hotel RL, starting Aug. 1 in Baltimore, Md. “We will be known for our coffee experience,” Greg Mount, president and chief executive officer of Red Lion Hotels Corporation, said in a news release. “When we met the owner and staff from these award-winning coffee brands, Victrola and Whidbey, we knew they understood

our vision. It’s more than just serving a great cup of coffee or latte, it’s about the Pacific Northwest culture and the passion for the experience and then translating that into the layout and design features of the lobby.” The idea is an effort to move the coffee experience out of the rooms and back into the lobbies, Ollis said. He likes the partnership because Red Lion is a Washington corporation and also because it grows the wholesale side of Whidbey Coffee’s business.

Last month, Whidbey Coffee got even more exposure as Ollis appeared in a Heritage Bank commercial. Ollis said he’s been a longtime customer of Heritage Bank and was one of four Western Washington business owners approached by the bank to be featured. In the commercial, which was shot in May on a lighting stage in South Seattle, Ollis is shown in slow motion pouring a large scoop of coffee beans. Through the magic of film, the beans appear to be dropping into a funnel-shaped tray

on a table before him, but that wasn’t the reality. “The beans are splashing all over the table,” said Ollis, who figures it took about 50 takes to get it right. Although he’s seen a video of the commercial, Ollis said he had yet to see it run on television. Many friends have, however, including when it launched on KCPQ-13 FOX during coverage of the U.S. Open last month. “I’ve had a number of colleagues and friends call and of course tease me,” he said.

Healthy Living Holistic medicine treats overall health Barbara Simons, PA-C - The Water’s Edge

Community Mental Health is good for the community!

Holistic medicine is a term used to describe treatment therapies that treat the patient as a whole person versus just treating a symptom. Emphasis is placed on preventing illness by optimizing health.

Author - Sunrise Community Mental Health

Oftentimes in Western and, especially, cooperative medicine, there are tendencies to treat symptoms and send a patient out the door with a prescription.

Sunrise Community Mental Health is pleased to now be serving Island County with two new locations in Coupeville and Oak Harbor.

Holistic medicine, however, looks at an individual’s overall physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well being before a treatment is determined. Holistic medicine practitioners look at a body’s systems as being out of balance when ill, and they place great importance on nutrition as well as avoidance of certain substances known to pollute the body as well as mind.

Sunrise Community Mental Health provides a variety of treatment and support programs, helping people with mental illness remain in their community. It’s important to Sunrise that their clients to progress toward wellness and true recovery. Because each person’s needs are unique and each person’s vision of recovery is unique, Sunrise works with the individuals to build a customized plan that is equally unique.

Holistic medicine can address chronic illnesses and acute and minor illnesses, and try to bring all areas of our patient’s life and the energies flowing through the body back into balance. A properly balanced holistic treatment plan aims to take into consideration all aspects of human health and includes noninvasive and non-pharmaceutical healing methods, including herbal medicine, naturopathic medicine, nutritional therapies, stress reduction and psychotherapy, massage and chiropractic approach. Office visits can run 60 minutes for first visits and from 30-60 minutes for all other visits. This time is to get to know a patient and allow for setting up individualized treatment plans.

Sunrise has nearly 40 years of experience providing supports for persons with mental health diagnoses. They will also connect people with services and benefits. Their qualified professionals and extensive network of relationships with other community supports helps their clients find solutions that last.
