VFW DEDICATES NEW MEMORIAL By DEBRA VAUGHN The idea came to Myron Brundage three years ago at a flag retirement ceremony at the VFW.
The ceremony was held next to the Veteran’s Memorial — a 4-by-4 foot white sign. “It was sad,” said Brundage, who now serves as post commander at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7392. “I thought at the time, ‘We can do better.’” And after more than a year of hard work and help from the community, they have.

Property, Koetje Real Estate, Concrete Northwest and Home Depot.
The memorial features a curving red concrete walkway that leads to a black, metal silhouette of kneeling soldiers, flag poles and a landscaped courtyard lined with bricks bearing the names of veterans — both living and those who have passed.
“Everything was donated,” he said. “I just kept asking people if they would be a part of it.”
“When somebody gives everything, you need more than a four-by-four sign to say, ‘Thank You,’” Brundage said.
The VFW Riders performed most of the labor, including clearing stumps, rocks and rogue rose bushes. Anyone who wants to honor a veteran or active-duty service member can purchase a brick and have it inscribed for $35 to $45.

DAV van calls for drivers By KATE DANIEL The sun is barely peeking out over the horizon as Chuck Leavitt, a retired Army veteran, settles into his seat in the Disabled American Veterans van.
said.
Leavitt, who is legally blind, relies on the van to transport him and his service dog from his Oak Harbor home to the VA hospital in Seattle.
Hawkins recently penned an open letter to Whidbey community members and organizations, calling for volunteer drivers.
He is one of about 50-60 veterans who depend on the free service each month. Van service is operated entirely by volunteers; and many have bowed out recently due to illness, advanced age or other obligations. Floyd Hawkins, Navy veteran and commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 47, estimated he’s had to cancel between four to six rides in July thus far. Most of those were cancelled because of a lack of available drivers. “It imposes a hardship when we have to cancel,” he
When cancellations are necessary, Hawkins and his staff attempt to notify riders as soon as possible, but it can still be difficult for patients to rearrange care schedules.
The DAV currently has six drivers on board, though Hawkins said they need between 10 and 12 to adequately meet riders’ needs. Due to the volunteer status of drivers, the number of available individuals fluctuates, as does their availability. Hawkins said he is willing to work with volunteers to find mutually suitable times and dates; any amount of help is welcome. Hawkins began driving himself in 2002 before volunteering as a service officer. He noted that the experience was incredibly rewarding.
The van rolls out five days a week and makes approximately six to seven stops along the way to Seattle, including Anacortes, Mount Vernon and occasional stops in Marysville and Everett. The first official pickup point is 6 a.m. at Haagen’s in Oak Harbor, though the van makes one prior stop at Leavitt’s home at 5:45 a.m. Home pickups are not the norm, but the van makes an exception for certain individuals like Leavitt who cannot drive and don’t have a ride to the designated pickup point. Leavitt has been riding the bus for about four years, he estimates. All of his appointments, including seeing a cardiologist and dermatologist, are at the VA hospital in Seattle. Leavitt explained that he has a “floppy heart,” a weak valve, for which he takes medication and checks in regularly with the doctor. He rides the van two to three times a week.
Kate Daniel photo
Chuck Leavitt and his service dog prepare to board the van Wednesday morning. “I could drive but it would be white-knuckle for everybody,” he joked. If not for the van, Leavitt explained that he would have to spend the greater part of the day taking a combination of public transit buses in order to get to the hospital. His return trip would also be far more difficult, he explained, as the standard bus route from the Clinton ferry dock runs until about 7 p.m., but paratransit typically doesn’t run as late.

“I think the calibre of drivers is excellent,” said Leavitt, adding that he’s yet to encounter a grumpy driver or one with whom he doesn’t feel safe. “It’s a pleasure.” Aside from the occasional home pickup for vets like Leavitt, drivers make additional accommodations for riders whenever possible, including considerations for sufferers of PTSD. One rider in particular, Hawkins said, needed to ride at the back of
the bus in order to prevent anyone from sitting behind him and causing excessive stress. “We try our best to accommodate the passenger,” Hawkins said. Anyone can volunteer, veterans or otherwise. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record and be able to pass a standard background check. The VA also requires prospective volunteer drivers to pass a physical exam and attend training. Anyone interested in volunteering may stop by the DAV office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and fill out an application. The office is located in the Veterans of Foreign Wars building at 3037 Goldie Road. Call 360-682-2945 for more information.

Although he could see doctors closer to home, he said he’s been visiting VA doctors in Seattle for 18 years, and it would be a considerable effort to establish a new network of providers. Not to mention, he’d still need to arrange paratransit transportation to each of his individual appointments, which would likely prove more cumbersome than the one-stop-shop VA hospital.

Start to finish: Pilot a part of Prowler history By RON NEWBERRY As the first pilot to deliver the initial EA-6B Prowler to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in 1971, Fred Wilmot is as much a part of the jet’s history and lore as anyone alive.
So when it came time to plan a commemoration for the Navy’s first electronic attack aircraft 44 years later, Wilmot didn’t hesitate to get involved. At 77, retired and living in Oak Harbor, Wilmot had the time, connections and knowhow to help set up a celebration suitable for the occasion. A friend of Wilmot’s, however, had bigger plans for the former Navy pilot. At an Oak Harbor Navy League luncheon in February, Joe Farina suggested how fitting the event would be if Wilmot could be a crew member in the Prowler’s final operational flight out of NAS Whidbey. Wilmot didn’t get his hopes up. “I thought it was a great idea,” Wilmot said, “but I had kind of guarded optimism that they would buy into that because there are an awful lot of hoops to jump through.” Four months later, Wilmot squeezed into a flight suit he hadn’t worn in nearly four decades and set out on the Prowler’s final historic flight. He had to settle for a backseat ride, but had no complaints, as he was part of a four-member crew that made two flyovers during the Prowler Sunset celebration and base open house attended by about 4,000 at Ault Field June 27. After the aircraft came in for a landing to let Wilmot out, it flew away bound for NAS Point Mugu in Oxnard, Calif., marking the end of an era for the Prowler with the Navy.
“It was kind of a flashback 37 years,” Fred Wilmot said. A flashback to a time that he considered to be the highlight of his naval career, serving as commanding officer of the VAQ-135 Black Ravens. Wilmot spent 28 years as a Navy pilot, including his stint testing the Prowler on the east coast. In January of 1971, after accumulating 300 flight hours in the newly developed aircraft, he was the logical choice to deliver the first Prowler to NAS Whidbey by flying cross-country from the Grumman manufacturing site in Calverton, N.Y., to Oak Harbor. Forty-four years later, he was poetically part of the last operational flight with the Navy. Although he hadn’t flown in a Prowler since 1978, he said it was sort of like riding a bike, though this time he wasn’t at the controls. He had never flown in the backseat of a Prowler before. “The toughest part was getting hooked into the seat,” Wilmot said. “It had been 37 years.”
Wilmot was assisted by members of the VAQ134 Garudas, the squadron involved in the final flight. About three hours before the noon flight, they issued him flight gear, including a survival vest and g-suit, and hung him from straps in a torso harness to make sure the straps were tight in the event of an ejection. “It’s something they didn’t used to do,” Wilmot said. Wilmot still looked the part. “I still had my flight suit from back when I was a skipper, which I wore,” he said. Did it fit? “It was a little snug, but it still fit,” he said. Wilmot said the experience was exhilarating and he felt honored to be included in such an historic event. It all came about from an idea by Farina, logistics manager with Northrop Grumman, which designed and built the Prowler. The Navy approved. “Everybody up the chain (of command) liked the idea,”
At times, he failed. “He’s just over the moon,” said Vicki Wilmot, who’ll celebrate her 52nd wedding anniversary with her husband in August.
Wilmot said. “It had to be pretty high up in the Navy chain to get approval to do it. I had to get a flight physical.” The final flight was among the crowning moments of the three-day Prowler Sunset festivities, which were sponsored by the Navy and Northrop
Grumman and organized and produced by the Whidbey Roost Chapter of the Association of Old Crows with assistance from the Navy League.
has been replaced by the EA-18G Growler.
The event marked the end of one era and the continuation of another as the Prowler
“We had a lot of friends and family here. I just don’t have enough adjectives.”
“It was a very special day,” Vicki Wilmot said. “The real thrill was our grandchildren got to see this.
