Cadets show their colors at Safeco Field By DEBRA VAUGHN
B
efore Oak Harbor High School senior Chase Powell stepped onto Safeco Field, he was so nervous he could feel the blood pumping through his veins. He and four other students from the school’s NJROTC Color Guard presented the colors at a Seattle Mariners game Sept. 13 in front of thousands of sports fans — by far the largest venue for this batch of students. “The cadets did really well,” said their instructor, retired U.S. Navy Chief William Thiel. “They were very nervous once the time to go on the field came.” They pulled it off without a hitch. once a week, learn to march and take classes on subjects such as Naval history, it’s not primarily about the military, said instructor Mike Black, a retired Navy commander. “It’s about developing informed and involved citizens and developing leadership skills,” he said. A select few are chosen for the Color Guard. It’s an honor and a commitment for the cadets, who practice outside school hours to perfect the crisp movements. The cadets perform in dozens of events across the region, such as parades, retirement ceremonies and military funerals. Schuldt said the program has bolstered her confidence. Before she joined “I had purple hair and I was really shy.” She said she feels proud when veterans tell her she and her fellows are future leaders. Larsen tried nearly every sport in middle school, trying to find his place. He found it here. After graduation, he’s enlisting in the Marine Corps. He used to admire the people in uniform he saw around town. “Now I’m the person walking down the street people are looking up to,” he said. “It’s a great experience.”

eff Hansen doesn’t know why, but the A-3 Skywarrior has a hold on him. It’s ensnared him so thoroughly he’s put in hundreds of hours of his own time bringing an A-3 to Whidbey Island and restoring it. And he’s not the only one. “You talk to anybody on A-3 and ask them what’s the best plane they’ve worked on,” Hansen said. “They’ll say an A-3.” The Navy used the A-3 Skywarrior, nicknamed “the whale,”
to drop bombs, fuel other planes in flight, take recon photos and jam enemy radar. Most of them operated out of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station Whidbey Island from 1957 to 1968. The whale was the largest jet to fly off an aircraft carrier.
their names on the plane, said Bill Burklow, one of the director’s of the nonprofit. People started offering cash for the honor. Ultimately, Croft and Hansen were chosen because of the sheer number of hours both put into the project.
Members of a nonprofit called the Whidbey A-3 Skywarrior Memorial Foundation are near the end of a long, difficult journey to bring one of the jets to Whidbey. That A-3 is parked outside the Langley Gate at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and will be mounted on a static display soon.
Hansen, a quiet man, doesn’t want the attention and was reluctant to participate in this story.

SKYWARRIOR CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 He learned on the A-3 and became an enlisted navigator who eventually taught officers how it’s done. His naval career took him across the globe, including to Vietnam where he helped fuel aircraft from the seat of an A-3. He flew 222 combat missions. He recalls the thrill of screaming off the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, accelerating to 130 mph in 2.5 seconds, and the heart-in-the-throat moment of landing on a roiling carrier at night. “I just love flying,” he said. “It’s always a thrill to be flying.” He participated in photo recon missions, trained pilots, ferried airplanes from one place to another and even escorted a vice-admiral around Australia.

An A-3 Skywarrior made its final journey down Ault Field Road early one morning in August. Even with the jet wings folded, crews were pulling out road signs in the rain to squeeze the behemoth through. By the end of September, organizers hope to have the jet mounted in a static display.

Some of his missions were nail-biters in which the margin between how much fuel they could deliver and how much they needed to get back was slim. Some of his work he still can’t talk about. He became qualified to fly just about all the aircraft the Navy has to offer. In 1978 he survived complete engine failure in an A-6, ejecting with the pilot into the bay near San Francisco as the jet took a nosedive into the drink. All his time in so many aircraft and it’s the Skywarrior he can’t forget. “I have no idea why,” he said. “It sticks with you.” There’s something about devoting most of your life to a jet that gets a hold of you, said Dan Hagedorn, a senior curator for Seattle’s Museum of Flight who also worked at the Smithsonian. But he thinks there’s something more with the A-3.

“It’s remarkably reliable and easy to take care of — an astonishing airplane. It’s an honest aircraft crews could count on to get them back home.” Dan Hagedorn Seattle’s Museum of Flight
“It’s remarkably reliable and easy to take care of — an astonishing airplane,” he said. “It’s an honest aircraft crews could count on to get them back home.” The A-3 was originally designed beginning in 1947 as a twinjet nuclear bomber. The Skywarrior never was used for that function but quickly became a conventional bomber and was one of the first aircraft to drop bombs on north Vietnam, he said. Officials learned the jet excelled at other functions, including electronic warfare, fueling and intelligence gathering. “A lot of returning airmen loved the sight of it,” Hagedorn said. “It meant they could get back to carrier and get some more gas.” The Navy retired the plane in 1991. The functions of the airplane were taken over by the A-6 and the EA-6B Prowler. And there were other issues. The A-3’s other nickname was “all three dead” because the aircraft didn’t contain an ejection system. The A-3 does offer another distinction. It lasted far longer than its successor, a sex-looking, high-performing bomber called the A-5 Vigilante.

Congressman Larsen summarizes vet roundtables U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen met with more than 400 veterans and their families in August in a series of six roundtables across his Congressional District, according to a press release from his office. Larsen heard questions and comments from veterans on a variety of issues, including reforms at the Department of Veterans Affairs, and successes and challenges getting access to services like health care, job training and housing. He provided a summary of some of the themes from the roundtables and underscored his continued commitment to connecting veterans with the services they need. Larsen provided the following updates based on common themes from the roundtables: VA CHOICE: “One major VA reform that I voted for and Congress passed in 2014 created VA Choice, a three-year program to allow veterans living more than 40 miles from VA health care, or who had waited more than 30 days for a VA appointment, to access non-VA care at no extra cost. “At the roundtables, many veterans had concerns and
questions about VA Choice. Some veterans shared that the Choice program helped them get the care they need in a more timely way, while others have had major challenges. Representatives from the VA Puget Sound Health Care System attended the roundtables and helped answer veterans’ questions about how the program is supposed to work and how to navigate the system. I will be looking at whether there are ways to adjust Choice to get rid of roadblocks for veterans in Northwest Washington. Veterans with questions about the Choice program can call the Choice Champions Call Center at 206-764-2876.” CBOC UPDATE: “I had the opportunity to tour the Mount Vernon CBOC and hear about the various services the clinic offers. Residents in the North Puget Sound rightly advocated for the clinic several years ago, and I was pleased to work with Sen. Patty Murray to open the clinic and bring VA services closer to veterans in the Second Congressional District. Now the clinic has become a victim of its own success because demand has

outgrown what the facility can provide. The clinic was designed to serve 6,500 patients, and it is now serving 8,500. The clinic is currently working to address its shortage of primary care doctors through different recruiting and retention efforts. “Many veterans at the roundtables expressed frustration that they could not
get into the clinic in a timely way, and they wanted to know why the clinic does not have enough doctors. Part of the issue is the high demand for the clinic. VA facilities also are competing with private hospitals and clinics for doctors amid a national primary care physician shortage. These are not excuses, but explanations for what is happening at
the Mount Vernon CBOC. Clinic leaders I spoke with are actively working to hire more primary care doctors. “VA representatives at the roundtables discussed the possibility of another CBOC north of Seattle. I am ready to get to work to make a new clinic a reality to bring more accessible health care to veterans.
“On the mental health care side, I want to be clear that the CBOC accepts walk-in patients weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. These same-day appointments are designed to assist veterans who may need immediate mental health care.”

Whidbey Island offers a lot of places to fish from shore, but Cruz found the stretch at Driftwood Park at the Keystone Spit to be his sanctuary. Each year, from July to October, Rose Cruz knew where to find her husband. From the excitement in his voice, she knew it was often hopeless to try to keep him home in Oak Harbor even on days when he wasn’t feeling his best.
Cruz remembers Aug. 20, the day her husband died, as being one of those days. “I said, ‘Not today,’” Rose Cruz said. “He said, ‘Yeah, but it’s a beautiful day.’ “I said, ‘Yeah, but you’re not feeling well. Give it another day. Stay home.’” Rick Cruz made his wife a promise that after landing six more salmon, he’d set the poles down and catch up on his rest. It was a promise he was on his way to fulfilling until he suffered a heart attack that afternoon and died at the beach.

Rick Cruz was found lying on the ground next to a log where he had been sitting after catching his second salmon that day. Weakened by a heart and lung condition and becoming more reliant on a cylinder of oxygen he kept in his car to help his breathing, Cruz had told his wife earlier in the year that he felt the end was near. And, on more than one occasion, he had told the friends he fished with at Keystone that his favorite fishing spot was where he wanted to die. “One of the last things Rick said on the shore was, ‘Danny, if I have to go, this is where I want to go, right here,’” said Danny Henn, a fishing partner from Coupeville, recalling a conversation he had with Cruz the week before he died.
“He loved it here.” Rose Cruz knew that her husband enjoyed the camaraderie with fellow anglers he developed over the past decade almost as much as hooking into a salmon. At 72, he was among a group affectionately called the “old-timers” and stood out for his kind heart, patience and eagerness to help new fishermen with tips he’d acquired over the years on how to set up their fishing rods. His close friends at Keystone knew that his onshore mission was to catch salmon to fill coolers that he would take to his native Guam to share with family there. Some also knew that he had served in the U.S. Army and spent time in Vietnam, SEE RICK CRUZ, PAGE 7

RICK CRUZ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 followed by a career as a federal firefighter in Guam. But none of his fishing buddies knew they were in the presence of a man whose heroism landed him one of the highest honors a person in military service can be awarded. Cruz only revealed so much about himself, his wife said, describing her husband as very private, humble and proud. It would take her stumbling upon a briefcase and studying the contents a couple years after their marriage in 2001 until she realized the extent of her husband’s military career. Inside was a trove of medals, including two Purple Hearts and numerous certificates and newspaper articles. One particular commendation made her jaw drop. Rose Cruz read that on Oct. 6, 1966, her husband, Staff Sgt. Enrique Cruz, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism. It is the second highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the Army, second only to the Medal of Honor. Accompanying the medal and certificate was a detailed report describing Cruz’s actions that occurred June 30, 1966 during a search-and-

After noticing that the insurgents were closing in from the rear in an attempt to cut off the column, Cruz delivered suppressive fire for more than an hour, preventing a breach to the rear of the column, the report reads.

When a nearby tank was hit by hostile fire, killing the tank commander and injuring three crew members, Cruz rushed to the burning tank and pulled the three crewmen to the cover of his armed personnel carrier, administered first aid and took them to the evacuation area. Although Cruz himself was wounded, he refused to be evacuated, the report continued. He resupplied his carrier with ammunition and returned to the front of the battle area to provide covering fire for the evacuation of the wounded, according to the report. When his machine gun barrel melted due to “the intense rate of fire,” he secured another weapon from a disabled carrier and continued to provide cover, refusing to be evacuated after being injured a second time. General William Westmoreland would later personally award Cruz for his bravery. “He’s a very private person,” Rose Cruz said of her husband. “He never told me what he had done in Vietnam. Rick received the second highest award in the nation and that was something I thought he would share. I had to find it and read it. He’s a very humble person.” Sam Loeum, who’s fished alongside Cruz for years, was unaware of
Cruz’s commendations. “He never mentioned that,’ Loeum said. Cruz was full of surprises to his friends and his wife, who misses his child-like playfulness. She said he loved his family and loved to golf and fish. She teased him about owning 10 fishing poles, many of them rigged with different lures of various colors. Rick Cruz didn’t like to waste time tying up hooks when the fish were jumping. He wanted to be prepared at the precise moment that fish were biting and passing through in large numbers. “He’s carrying four poles with
A fisherman spotted Cruz on the ground and started CPR. It was continued by Whidbey General Hospital paramedics who arrived, but the efforts were unable to bring Cruz back. “He said this is where he wanted to die,” said Billy Brigham, a longtime friend and fishing partner. Rose Cruz wished she could have said goodbye to her husband but takes solace in the place where he spent his final hours on earth. She’s been surrounded by kindness since his death. Firefighters with Central Whidbey Fire & Rescue even cleaned Cruz’s fish and brought the salmon to Cruz’s home in Oak Harbor. “It was something he loves to do,” she said. “That gives me a sense of peace.”

WWII veteran receives surprise honor Navy vet Jim Boswell earned Bronze Star in Normandy By KATE DANIEL When Jim Boswell boarded the Queen Mary on Easter Sunday, 1944, his unwavering sense of duty to his country trumped any inkling of trepidation in regard to the journey ahead. At 17 years old, Boswell had enlisted in the Navy in February 1944 and had attended basic training at Naval Training Station Sampson, New York. On Easter Sunday, he believed himself to be on the way to attend amphibious training in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was unaware that a mistake had led to his placement on the wrong boat — one headed for Roseneith, Scotland. However unsettling the realization may have been for some — Jim Boswell had no amphibious training thus far, and would soon be sent to the front lines of battle — fear was a concept unknown to the young sailor. Recalling the two years of his youth spent aboard ships during World War II, the Oak Harbor resident said matter-of-factly, “I didn’t care. I didn’t have any sense then.” At 88 years old, Jim Boswell isn’t quite as agile as he was at 17. But, given the opportunity, he said he’d “100 percent” do it all again. “It’s probably a good thing
they don’t allow seniors in the military,” said his wife, Laura Boswell. “Somebody would have to push my walker,” Jim Boswell said with a laugh. Boswell was recently diagnosed with liver cancer. The diagnosis prompted his wife, who says she is “notorious for doing surprises,” to plan an event honoring her husband and his service. On Tuesday Sept. 8, the Boswells gathered with close friends, family members and two active-duty sailors at Summer Hill Retirement Center, where Commander Ducanti discussed the veteran’s service and presented him with a veteran coin and a framed American flag. A flag in Jim Boswell’s honor was also flown at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The presentation was completely unexpected by Jim Boswell, who said he was deeply moved by the ceremony and the gratitude expressed by those present. He keeps the coin tucked away securely in his pocket, a reminder of the day and of the honor. The flag is displayed proudly in the couple’s home. “Jim is a role model for everyone lucky enough to know him and is proud to be a veteran,” wrote Al Robinson, a friend of the Boswells, in

enemy fire from a beach battery on June 15, 1944, during the Battle of Normandy. During the same battle and on his second trip, the ship on which he sailed withstood eight direct hits, with sailors ordered to abandon ship. Jim Boswell and a friend hadn’t heard the commands, he recalled, though they were fortunate enough to survive the blows. His service in Normandy earned him a bronze star. When the invasion of France ended, Jim Boswell took a short leave home in Connecticut before finally receiving his amphibious training at Fort Pierce. Afterward, he boarded the U.S.S. Oglethorpe and headed for Japan, traveling through the Panama Canal. By the time Jim Boswell arrived, the Japanese had surrendered. He was soon after stationed on Kwajalein, where he spent the remainder of his time in the Navy as the base commander’s yeoman. NAS Whidbey busy with construction Several major construction projects are underway at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and the Seaplane base. Here’s what’s planned: P-8A Maritime Training Facility — The Navy is moving P-8A Poseidon squadrons to Whidbey Island. This twostory flight training project includes nearly 100,000 square feet of space for operational flight trainers and weapons tactical trainers associated with the P-8A, which is replacing the P-3. The building includes support equipment, bridge cranes, communications equipment, maintenance support shops, administrative support areas and briefing rooms. Hangar 6 is expanding to accommodate the P-8A Poseidon. Operations Center — Workers are building a 29,000-square-foot operations center and turning the previous center into a mobile tactical operations center. The new building will be home to a maritime patrol and reconnaissance wing headquarters. The $20.9 million contract was awarded to RQ Construction. The project is expected to be complete by the fall of 2017. Hangar 10 EA-18G — This project expands an existing hangar to support another EA-18 Growlers squadron. The upgrades will create enough space for two jets and work spaces. The $23.8 million contract was awarded to the Korte Construction Co. The project is expected to be complete by the summer of 2017.

We Are Whidbey Teri Mendiola has worked in advertising sales for 15 years, coming to the Whidbey Crosswind from Guam with a background in radio and television sales. She also worked for an advertising agency and organized events and large-scale concerts, including one with Kool and the Gang. But Oak Harbor is where Teri and her husband, Ric, hope to make their forever home. Near them live their sons, James, Jason and Joshua. “I enjoy talking to people. I like showing my clients the results of their advertising — and make sure that it works for them.” “I enjoy the people that I work with, and that makes a lot of difference. It’s an awesome team.”

Murray urges investigation regarding G.I. Bill benefits U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, urged Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald to investigate allegations that a number of questionable unaccredited educational institutions have received G.I. Bill benefits despite federal regulations to prevent it, according to a press release. The urging follows a report by Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting. The letter, signed by Sen. Murray, as well as Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Chris

Murphy (D-CT), Tom Carper (D-DE), and Jack Reed (D-RI), stated: “The report documents a number of educationally questionable, and in some instances morally repugnant, institutions that have inexplicably received VA education benefits. These include an unlicensed massage therapy school, an institute whose parent organization is a listed hate group, and an institute on human sexuality claiming to be in possession of child pornography. If true, this is a terrible failure of our promise to veterans and taxpayers, the Senators wrote.
In response to the article that documents University of Phoenix’s deceptive marketing practices and its infringement on military trademarks, Durbin called on the Department of Defense to investigate the allegations made in the report and take immediate action to bar the company from further access to service members until the issues are resolved.
