Port Orchard author writes a sequel to ‘Swiss Family Robinson’
BY BOB SMITH rsmith@soundpublishing.com
P
ort Orchard author TJ Hoisington has brought the original “Swiss Family Robinson” adventure story, written by Johann Davis Wyss, back to life with a new book that picks up where Wyss’ tale left off. The classic, written in 1812, follows the adventures of a family shipwrecked on an island in the East Indies. The Robinson family’s tale of
survival, adaptation and resilience has inspired a number of movie adaptations over the years, including Disney’s popular 1960 motion-picture version, one most familiar to television-age parents and their DVD-loving children. But surprisingly, a book sequel that picks up the story where Wyss left off has never been written. Until now. Hoisington took up the challenge and, after more than a decade of fits and starts, his ambitious book

was released Oct. 13. Hoisington, however, is better known as a prominent motivational speaker and author. His book, “If You Think You Can!,” and a number of follow-up self-help book titles have become national New York Times best sellers for the former Tony Robbins protege. While his specialty as an author is self-help non-fiction, hie journeyed out of his comfort zone to pen a sequel to a fictional

work that has been taking place for the past two years around this project to create more supportive, affordable housing for survivors of domestic violence,” said Claire Bishop, an adviser to The Seattle Foundation, in an announcement of the gift. “We’re very excited to

OULSBO — It’s just a typical day for Central Market courtesy clerk Ryan Hoskins. As he quickly and agilely scans customers’ delicate groceries, he mentally prepares himself for a unique competition judged on speed, style and technique. Hoskins, of Indianola, will compete in Spokane for the honor of representing Washington at the 30th annual National Grocers Association Best Bagger Competition. “I didn’t realize all that was entailed in the bagging competition,” he said.

POULSBO — The final site map has been drawn. The elevations — what the buildings will look like — have been sketched out. The place even has a proposed name: the Old City Hall Apartments. Now, all that remains is for the City of Poulsbo to demolish the old city hall at 19050 Jensen Way, and construction will begin on the new apartments and retail spaces on the site. Getting past the rainy season is a factor, lest the basement become a pool. Jim Laughlin of Blue North Development, the project developer, said construction could begin “sometime in early 2016 … If we See APARTMENTS, Page A6

North vs. Kingston: Crosstown rivals meet
North Kitsap tight end Kole Milyard fakes out a Bremerton defender, Oct. 9.
Coaches are expecting a lot from their teams, and their opponents By SOPHIE BONOMI
sbonomi@northkitsapherald.com
POULSBO — If last week’s scores are any indication of the upcoming game between North Kitsap and Kingston, then spectators should be in for an intense spectacle against these crosstown rivals. North Kitsap handily defeated Bremerton 44-27; Kingston ruthlessly lost to Olympic 7-46, Oct. 9. “North has a very good
defense, and defensive linebackers. If we can take one of them, then I expect we can move the ball,” said Kingston High school head coach Todd Harding. Although the Kingston Buccaneers have high hopes of running the ball for the win, details of the Oct. 9 game vs. Olympic show they’re in for a hard match. Kingston QB Max English had 4 complete

passes for 60 yards total, but was intercepted twice and sacked three times. With multiple fumbles and failed attempts, Kingston running back Alex Barrett was finally able to run 20 yards in the fourth quarter, for Kingston’s first and only touchdown. Over on the other end of town, North Kitsap scored 14 touchdowns in the first quarter alone, between Sam Henden’s 16-yard dash and Sean Crowell’s 13-yard run after kickoffs by Kainen Warren. Bremer ton’s Mike Barber hauled in a 9-yard pass from Savante Perrigo.
Sophomore Tyler Sloman (53) blocks point by Olympic kicker Bryce Chipley (11) during first quarter of Kingston’s Homecoming game. Johnny Walker / Correspondent Despite a few failed passes by Crowell and a failed 3-yard run by Tristin Newman, North Kitsap dominated the field as the third quarter left them with a score of 38-7. The final quarter brought a slight turn as Bremerton managed to rack up an additional 20 points to end the game 44-27. “We certainly expect a tough game,” North Kitsap head coach Jeff Weible said of Kingston. “Every time we play each other, it’s pretty close. We certainly don’t want them to have the upper hand.” Harding said of North,
“There’s a lot of history between Kingston and North. This is our biggest rivalry game. It’s a ton of fun for the kids because they all know each other. We always look forward to playing with North.” Kingston is 2-2, 2-4 in Olympic League 2A. North Kitsap is 3-0, 4-2. Although emotions are high between teams, both coaches feel confident in their abilities of scoring a good game. “Our defense is great, and our offense is getting better each week,” said Weible. “We had a good practice yesterday. We’re
very prepared, they are learning to adjust on the fly without having to think it through.” Harding said confidently, “Our athleticism and team speed is the best it’s ever been.” Although North has had a great season thus far, Weible stressed, “It’s going to be a tough game for sure. Hopefully, they’re gonna give it what it takes to win this one.” The game will be hosted by Kingston at North Kitsap Stadium, 7 p.m. Oct. 16.
Gateway Eagles use super-hero strength to run over 650 miles in Fundraiser Marathon By SOPHIE BONOMI
sbonomi@northkitsapherald.com
POULSBO — It certainly was a “fun run” for the students at Gateway Christian School’s Poulsbo campus. They ran, walked, and jumped over 650 miles to raise $20,000 for school programs on Oct. 9. “The first day of school we begin to the kick up to raise pledges,” said Principal Barbara Waggoner. “The kids trained at recess by running a lap before play and in P.E. to build up for the event.” Ninety students wearing smiles, stark white T-shirts
and blue capes, giggled and cheered as gym teacher of 22 years, Nick Gilman — commonly referred to as “Mr. Marathon” — led them in the “Marathon Song.” The excitement increased as students took turns hurling through paper banners marking their grade as they exited outside to the course. After completing their warm up stretches and walking the first lap with their principal, the run was officially on. “I love watching how excited the kids are to meet their goal” said Waggoner.

Each time the kids completed a half-mile lap, they recorded it, and kept going. Parents, friends, and grandparents stood at the sidelines volunteering and showing support as they cheered on. “We have over 50 volunteers for an event with

over 500 miles. This year they walked, ran, skipped and hopped 100 miles more, a total of 673.5 miles. Their goal was to raise $20,000, although they won’t have the total money raised until next week. Waggoner said, “It would be safe to say we are nearing our $20,000 goal.” Money raised will be allocated toward technolo-
gy, art, Spanish and P.E. classes. “Most importantly, we teach about love,” director of marketing Tricia Reece said. “Our little kindergarteners are running their hearts out, not giving up.” Those who raised over $200 would later be invited to attend a marathon party. Beautiful You... Do you notice the change in weather?
If you do, then you probably also noticed the change in your skin. Here are some great ways to brighten up a dull complexion.
Exfoliation is a must this season! Slough away those dulling dead skin cells with a daily or weekly exfoliant that suits your skin’s needs. Facials are a wonderful way to start off fresh and can be kept up with an at home skin regimen. You may even want to consider a professional facial. The cold frigid weather can pull moisture out of your skin. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep skin supple. Consider a heavier daily or evening wear facial moisturizer if you notice your skin to be drier than normal. Most important, continue to use an SPF every day. Just because you can’t see the sun doesn’t mean the harmful UV rays are not there. The Skin Care Specialists at Bon Cheveux

motivation for the runners. “They’re going so fast, it’s ridiculous! It’s tremendous and incredible. It’s stupendous too.” Upon the final lap at 2:30, the students were winded but lively. Everyone participated as the music bellowed Vangelis’s “Chariots of Fire” slow-motion victory song. “I ran 14 laps and my legs are tired” said 8-year- old Hazel Keller. Her cousin, Andrew Morley, had a different observation: “I like the cookies and the oranges.”

He spent his last 25 years living on Bainbridge Island. Supporters of the project say “supportive” housing is one of the most important links to long-term success for domestic violence survivors working to start new lives. Last year, the YWCA of Kitsap County answered 4,711 domestic violence hotline calls and provided legal advocacy to 601 domestic violence victims; 35 women and 24 children fleeing domestic violence found a safe haven in YWCA’s ALIVE Shelter, which provides short-term housing and support. However, advocates say the YWCA turned away 1,544 women and children because of lack of shelter and housing, and that number is expected to increase in 2015. Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness in Kitsap County. Short- and long-term transitional housing can help survivors continue the challenging journey of rebuilding their lives, advocates say. Morrow Manor is named in honor of Ardis Morrow, a longtime advocate for change in domestic violence laws and in DV services in the county. She is the founder of Eli’s House, a duplex of transitional homes in Poulsbo named in memory of her great-grandnephew, who died at age 3 after being kicked by his father. Eli’s House is managed by the YWCA. Also providing transitional housing: Tersha’s House in Silverdale, named for Tersha Jo Brown, who was shot to death by her boyfriend in Sacramento in 2009. “The issues of domestic violence are very familiar to our club, because we’ve been blessed with Ardis Morrow and her leadership to champion awareness around domestic violence
since the tragic death of her nephew, Eli Creekmore, back in 1986,” PoulsboNorth Kitsap Rotary Club President Naveen Chaudhary said.
A vision emerges
When Amy Sanford of Bainbridge Island joined Rotary in 2012, she shared her story as a domestic violence survivor — and how having a supportive, safe place to call home while she rebuilt her life was key to her success. Sanford’s story helped spark the vision for Morrow Manor. Morrow Manor will consist of eight homes in a peaceful residential neighborhood in Poulsbo, adjacent to a new community park. The Rotary Club is raising funds for development of the donated site, and will deed the debt-free homes and property to the YWCA. The City of Poulsbo will fund, develop and maintain the park. The capital campaign goal is $2.1 million. Proponents hope to begin construction in summer 2016. The YWCA will manage supportive services for Morrow Manor residents, and manage the property in conjunction with its other housing, advocacy, and client management services. Residents will be able to stay at Morrow Manor on a sliding scale of affordable rents for up to six years. “The access to amenities like public transportation, schools, recreation, medical offices, and shopping is outstanding on this property,” said Denise Frey, executive director of the YWCA. “Courageous women and children from all over Kitsap and the West Sound are going to find refuge and a new beginning ... at Morrow Manor.” Chad Solvie, chairman of the Poulsbo-North Kitsap Rotary Domestic Violence Prevention Committee, added, “Many lives and multiple generations will be transformed for the better by this project, and we extend great thanks to the generosity of the C. Keith Birkenfeld Memorial Trust for such a notable gift to the campaign.” HOW YOU CAN HELP: Vote for Morrow Manor and help the project win $10,000 from Jewelers for Children. oulsbo City Council members are elected to four-year terms. They receive $700 a month. Only the mayor, who is directly elected, is full time and salaried. The council’s mission statement, from cityofpoulsbo.com: The council “endeavors to balance residents’ concerns and opinions with the law. The Council establishes the priorities of the City along with setting policies and a budget to allow the Mayor and Department Heads to run day-to-day business effectively and efficiently.” The North Kitsap Herald believes the following candidates are the most qualified for the council positions they seek, and we encourage residents to vote for them on Nov. 3. POULSBO CITY COUNCIL, POSITION 1. Two fine candidates are running for this position: Ken Thomas, a retired Navy officer who was appointed to the post earlier this year; and Amanda Cheatham, a customer service rep for Kitsap Public Utility District and executive director of the Miss West Sound Scholarship Organization. We endorse Ken Thomas. He has good ideas for bolstering economic development, improving public safety and protecting the environment, and he will be able to accomplish those goals because of his understanding of how government works. The city’s population is diversifying, and he wants to make sure all people have a voice in the city. He would engage residents by working closely with neighborhood associations to promote activities in more areas of the city. He’d like to see the same organized effort on Viking Avenue that downtown has, with events that draw people there. He wants to maintain the city’s natural surroundings; “The surrounding natural beauty, the ridges and woods within the city, the distinct neighborhoods bound by pathways and streets that unify the entire city — these are all things which should be protected and enhanced,” he said. He believes there should be a Municipal Court program similar to the alternative courts on the Superior Court level, enabling people to work off their fines through community service rather than accumulate debt. We hope to see Cheatham on the ballot again in the future. We recommend her appointment to the Planning Commission so she can get experience that will prepare her for future council service. POULSBO CITY COUNCIL, POSITION 5. Jeff McGinty is the sole candidate for this position since Gregory Mueller dropped out in early September to tend to personal legal matters. Mueller’s name will still be on the ballot. We endorse Jeff McGinty. We don’t believe a candidate deserves reelection simply because he or she is an incumbent. But McGinty brings unparalleled experience and historical perspective to the council. Now running for his seventh term, he’s the longest-serving See EDITORIAL, Page A5

Supports Christen as write-in for school board On your ballot for North Kitsap School District director, District 2, write “Bruce Christen” on the blank line and select his box. As Election Day gets closer, I’ve looked for information about Jim Almond, the unopposed candidate for NKSD director, District 2. I did not find any. The statement in the Kitsap County’s Voters Pamphlet was blank; he did not submit one. Most other unopposed candidates had statements. He did not participate in the League of Women Voters candidates’ forum on Oct. 5. Three unopposed Poulsbo City Council candidates did. It is not fair to North Kitsap voters to ask them to cast a vote when no information is available. Our schools are too important to vote without knowing what the candidate believes in or what they will do. Because of this uncertainty, Bruce Christen submitted a declaration of write-in candidacy to the Kitsap County auditor. Write-in votes can now be counted. We now have another choice this election. Write in “Bruce Christen” on your ballot and select him to continue his service as North Kitsap School District director, District 2. My choice is not only about the lack of understanding about Jim Almond, because understanding is temporary and will come with time. My choice is also about my experience with Bruce Christen. He has a truly unique and important perspective that is crucial to our district. Since Bruce Christen was appointed to the board in November, he has provided an unrelenting focus on the vision of future education. In the future, public education will unlock the potential of every child. All of our young people will find their value place in society. Our community will thrive. Bruce Christen is an advocate for the students that don’t have advocates. He is an advocate of freedom for teachers, when society is currently focused on accountability. North Kitsap needs Bruce

When I read the Letters section in the Oct. 9 edition of the North Kitsap Herald, I felt I needed to clear up some generally held misconceptions. In his letter (“Supports gun ownership, and background checks,” page A4), Mr. Shelbourn stated that he was a member of the NRA in his youth. Perhaps he still is. He is correct in observing that this organization has changed over the years. While it still promotes gun safety, training and conservation, it has had to respond to all the antigun and anti-Second Amendment groups who would disarm the country. The NRA is simply one of the many groups who are defending our Second Amendment rights and trying to counter the somewhat distorted “facts” touted by the anti-gun groups. It is in no way “the gun lobby.” It should be noted that, in our society, many advocacy groups retain lobbyists to promote their causes. No lobby can make members of Congress lose their seats. They lose their seats by not truly representing their constituents. Yes, the various lobbies contact the public to let them know of their representative’s performance — but isn’t this something about which every one of us should stay informed? I agree with Mr. Shelbourn when he says people should be outraged and disturbed when mass shootings occur. Most of the mass See LETTERS, Page A5

to stop the shooter. For those who wonder if more guns really result in less crime, one only needs to read a 2007 study done by Harvard University (hardly a bastion of conservatism) that found: no, we are not the nation with the highest murder rate; no, mass shootings are not unique to the United States; yes, in communities with more guns there is less crime. He’s interested in the revitalization of south Viking Avenue, and feels mixed-use development — now allowed in zoning by the city — would make “a nice entry” to Poulsbo. However, he said some property owners, remembering how road and infrastructure improvements in the last decade affected their businesses, are sensitive about local government becoming too involved. “I’m supportive of what they want to do,” McGinty said of South Viking Avenue property owners. “We’ll be as [involved] as we need to be.” NEXT WEEK: North Kitsap School Board.

start in January, it would be nice to open in September/ October.” Mayor Becky Erickson said of the project, “It is very, very close.” The old city hall was Poulsbo’s first, built in 1939 or 1940, according to historian Judy Driscoll of the Poulsbo Historical Society. Prior to that, the City Council met at the business office or store of whomever was mayor. The building was expanded in 1956, according to the county assessor’s database. Ultimately, the site housed the fire station, municipal court, and some county offices. In 1969, a fountain was dedicated next to the front steps in honor of civic booster Ida Knudson (1898-1967), described in the book “Spirit of Poulsbo”
as “a one-woman clearing house of caring for the community.” Driscoll said a plaque on the fountain will be saved for display elsewhere. The city moved to the new City Hall in November 2010, and the civic life at 19050 Jensen Way ended after a 70-year run. When Blue North takes ownership, the property will return to the tax rolls, meaning some additional property tax revenue for local government. The site’s assessed valuation in 2014 was $1.25 million, but property taxes are not collected on publicly owned property. The apartments are expected to fill a growing need in the community. “I just saw a report generated by Windermere Real Estate that shows Poulsbo has less available housing than anywhere in Kitsap County,” Erickson said.

The plan has been revised to “satisf[y] the
need for a diverse mix of housing sizes,” Laughlin said. Twenty-two one-bedroom apartments have been added to the unit mix, along with the 35 studio apartments already in the plan. Unit sizes will range from 784 square feet for

one-bedroom apartments to 390-450 square feet for studios. Some apartments will have water views, Laughlin said. Vehicle access and parking also have been reconfigured. Access to the complex has been shifted from Jensen Way to an easement on the north side of the property, the way that leads to the King Olav parking lot. Two buildings will flank a landscaped terrace. Parking will be underground. Laughlin hopes one of the retail tenants will be “a nice restaurant.” The revised site plan must undergo formal review by the City of Poulsbo. Blue North is under contract with the city to buy the site for $1.2 million, but one of the conditions is that the city will demolish the old city hall and clear the site. “When we get to a certain point where we know we will get a permit, then the city will tear the old building down and we’ll have a permit to begin (new construction),” Laughlin said. Laughlin estimated the project cost at $5 million, not including the $1.2 million purchase cost. The redeveloped site will be an upgrade from midcentury mish-mash to what Laughlin calls “modern Northwest,” with “a fair
amount of glass and wood accents.” The project is designed by the Bainbridge-based firm of Cutler Anderson Architects, whose local projects include the Virginia Merrill Bloedel Education Center, Bainbridge, 1992; Whar fside Complex, Bainbridge, 1998; Grace Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, 2003; Port Gamble S’Klallam House of Knowledge, Little Boston, 2004. Of the Old City Hall Apartments, Laughlin said, “We expect it to be the nicest building in Poulsbo. We do.” The apartments will be within walking distance of the waterfront as well as downtown’s cultural and culinary venues, among them a historical museum; maritime museum; stage theater; art galleries; a market and restaurants with foods from various cultures; book stores and coffee shops that host artists, authors and poets; breweries; and an aquarium and marine science center. Hoskins
Continued from page A1 Hoskins has competed in the past but this is the first time he will compete in the state competition. “I’m trying to keep the nerves at bay the best I can.” Hoskins has worked for Central Market for almost 10 years. When not working, he is the bass player in a local band. He’s an avid Moody Blues fan and has been to 16 Moody Blues concerts. “They are my absolute favorite,” said Hoskins. “When I was 15 years old, I was heavily into Black Sabbath. Then I saw the Moody Blues on PBS. They had good harmony, they were energetic. That hit me. I fell hard and fast.” Hoskins hopes to get a song stuck in his head during the competition. “There’s a certain degree of disconnect you have when your mind takes over your body, and I’m caught in the middle somewhere. Hopefully if I get a song stuck in my head that will help.” Participants in the Best Bagger Battle are judged on a rigorous criterion of speed, style, technique, and what Hoskins likes to call “the cincher” — uniform bag weight. “They cut the sides off of the grocery bag to see how well you packed it,” he adds. The competition consists of up to three rounds. The first uses paper bags,
Ryan Hoskins will compete in Spokane for a chance at the National Best Bagger Competition. Sophie Bonomi / Herald the second requires participants to fill reusable bags. A bruising third and final round determines the ultimate winner. “Sometimes you have the bag that’s just perfect,” Hoskins explained, “and you’re like, ‘Everyone, come over here and just look at this bag.’ ” At other times, bagging becomes more challenging. “Things like pears, peaches, even when carefully packed together they can hurt themselves. And have you seen the Brussels sprout trees? They are impossible.” Ten courtesy clerks from around the state will vie for the top honors. First-, second- and thirdplace winners receive
trophies and cash prizes of $1,500, $1,000 and $500, respectively. The first-place winner will also get an all-expenses-paid trip to the National Best Bagger Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada in February. “This takes a lot of practice,” Hoskins said. As he relates it, the pressures of competitive bagging are similar to early ’90s video game, “Super Ghouls ’n’ Ghosts” for Super Nintendo. “You’re a knight, and
you’re against the ghosts, but you only have two hits then you’re done. It’s kind of like that. It’s pretty tough.” As he talked, he noticed a group of young trainees learning to bag their first groceries. “For some, this is their first job,” he said. “It certainly opens you up and gets you out of your shell a bit, at least for me.” He explained being a bagger makes for better checkers; you are more aware and reminded to be conscientious. His advice to new baggers: ”Bag it right. Never lay the milk down on its side. And communication is key. You can never guess. One person in particular might like things separate, and the next might not care and have you throw everything together in one bag.” Although it takes a little more effort, Hoskins says, “People appreciate a good bagger to get their groceries home safely.” Hoskins’ mother and girlfriend — as well as a carpool of friends and Central Market coworkers — will be in Spokane to cheer him on. “The company is flying me to the competition. A huge thank you to them for that.” “It’s pretty amazing.

Even outside of here, people know me and know my name — even without the name tag. There’s so many good vibes from the store and the customers.” Washington’s Best

Beverly Ramstead July 1, 1925 - September 8, 2015 Beverly Jane “Babe” Ramstead, a long-time resident of Poulsbo, passed gently into the Lord’s hands while in her sleep on the morning of September 8. She was 90 years old. Beverly was a loving and supportive wife and mother who adored her family and loved nothing more than having them around her. She was a very loyal friend. It’s likely that she will be remembered for her generous spirit, sense of style, wry smile and dry wit. And she will be greatly missed. Born in Portland, Oregon on July 1, 1925, the second daughter of Emmett and Inga Coleman, she was raised in San Diego until she reached high school. Beverly remained extremely fond of the city her entire life as it provided many wonderful memories for her. The family moved to Seattle’s Greenlake neighborhood where she graduated from Lincoln High School, class of 1942. She always had high standards, which she rarely compromised, and had a great command of the English language. Because Beverly was an excellent student, she finished her course work a half year early and immediately entered the work force. She worked first as a secretary at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. and then at the Alaska Travel Control where she was a clerk/ typist. It was here that a co-worker introduced her brother Jim to Beverly. They began dating, and along with large groups of friends, spent unending hours dancing at clubs around Seattle. Dancing brought them so much joy throughout their lives. Beverly and Jim married in 1947; they started their family while living in the Shoreline area. In the mid-50’s, they and their three children moved to San Diego where their fourth child was born. It was here that Bev and Jim also built their first house together, were charter members of Clairemont Lutheran Church and took full advantage of the California weather, the beach and spending time surrounded by extended family and life-long friends. The Ramsteads returned to the Pacific Northwest in 1962, eventually settling in Poulsbo where they built another home. Beverly was a talented homemaker – a great cook who had a keen eye for design and textiles. She and Jim enjoyed entertaining and hosted many great parties. Beverly returned to work outside the home in 1969 and retired from the North Kitsap School District business office in 1985. Throughout her life, Beverly was known for her excellent musicianship and was often the center of enthusiastic singalongs around the piano. Raised a Lutheran, she was a choir member of every church she ever belonged to. And she served as lodge musician at the Poulsbo Sons of Norway where she was proud to have played for King Olav’s visit in 1975. Beverly never turned down a game of Scrabble! And took a lot of pleasure from playing cards - bridge, cribbage and gin, but mostly it was the interaction with whomever she was playing that brought her a lot of happiness. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim. Survivors include daughters Pat Smaaladen (Landis) of Bellevue, Susan of Ballard and Julie of Redmond, son Jim (Sande) of Indianola, her sister Charlotte Titus of Lake Oswego, Oregon, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Beverly’s interment service will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent on Friday, October 23 at 1:15pm. A service/celebration of life will be held at the Sons of Norway in Poulsbo on Saturday, October 24 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in her honor to Seattle Children’s Hospital at www.giveto.seattlechildrens.org or to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org. An online guestbook is available at www.curnowfuneralhome.com. TRIBUTE Paid Notice

The Big Easy is coming to Little Norway Hare & Hounds closes, will reopen as Cafe Jacamoe By PETE O’CAIN
pocain@northkitsapherrald.com
POULSBO — After seven years, Hare & Hounds Public House closed its doors Oct. 10. Owner Tammy Mattson said the English-style pub had “an awesome ride,” but it’s giving way for something a little more Big Easy. “But there came a time to go ahead and change things up,” Mattson said. “We’re bringing our passions into the walls, which is New Orleans.”
Tizley’s, Grovers Creek featured on Munchies channel POULSBO — Tizley’s Europub and the Suquamish Tribe’s Grovers Creek Salmon Hatchery are featured in a five-part culinary guide to Washington by the New York-based Munchies website and digital video
Hare & Hounds will reopen as Café Jacamoe. The name is derived from the iconic Mardi Gras song, “Iko, Iko.” Mattson originally planned to reopen around Halloween following a remodel, but flood damage from heavy rains on Oct. 10 pushed the date back indefinitely. Mattson said at one point there was four inches of flood water in Hare & Hounds so the flooring needs to be replaced. Mattson said they were able to retain all 12 members of their staff, despite the fact that the delayed reopen. “We’re dipping into our personal savings to make sure they’re not hurt,”
Mattson said. Mattson and Mark DiFilippo have owned Hare & Hounds for five of the seven years it’s been open. She said DiFilippo wanted to make the change to a New Orleans motif for years, but she didn’t want to tamper with Hare & Hounds. “I’ve been afraid to make the leap,” Mattson said. What pushed her to ultimately sign off on the leap was a sense of need to keep things fresh. “We felt the need to bring some excitement to our customers and the folks in Poulsbo,” Mattson said. Mattson and DiFilippo have had an affinity for “the Gritty City” for years. “It’s been our passion
from every experience possible,” Mattson said of New Orleans culture. She was mum as to specific menu items, but says it will feature “New Orleans inspired cuisine.” Mattson said the layout will be more open, with an
increased capacity of 38, up from Hare & Hounds’ 32. Patio seating will remain the same with space for 28. The idea is for Café Jacamoe to be have an intimate setting, reminiscent of classic New Orleans jazz joints. There will even be
a stage for jazz and blues music. For more information about the cafe, go to www. cafejacamoe.com. For updates on the remodeling progress, go to www.facebook.com/cafe jacamoe.
channel. The edgy series hosted by chef Tarik Abdullah takes viewers from Seattle to the San Juan Islands to the slopes of Mount Rainier and features the state’s most iconic and unusual foods, including salmon, geoduck and lutefisk. It debuted in August. The program’s target audience is millenials; the
language and some of the content is not for the easily offended. The 14- to 16-minute videos feature shots of the Suquamish Veterans Memorial and Chief Seattle’s grave, as well as extensive footage of Poulsbo’s waterfront and Front Street storefronts, including Crimson Cove, Sluys Bakery, and Tizleys, where Abdullah tastes lute-
fisk for the first time. Although he professes doubts before trying the traditional Norwegian dish, he has nothing but praise after digging in to a plate of the lye-soaked cod. “This is good. It’s really clean,” he said. Noting the jelly-like texture, he added: “It’s crazy light.” He was presented with a “Lutefisk: Bad to the Bone” T-shirt by Slippery
Pig Brewery owner Dave Lambert. Tizley’s co-owner Tammy Mattson said the exposure is a huge opportunity for the restaurant. “This was a fantastic thing for Kitsap and we’re just riding the wave.” Visit Kitsap Peninsula Executive Director Patricia Graf-Hoke steered the Munchies crew to Poulsbo while working with seg-

Insurance: Six tricks to save you money There are many ways to save money on both car and home insurance. Here are six tricks that have proven their worth: 1. Before signing a contract, be sure to shop around for more than one estimate. Try to get at least three quotes from different insurers before taking out insurance. Don’t forget to ask for quotes for the same types of protection so that you can compare oranges with oranges. 2. Increase your deductible in order to reduce your premium. The deductible is the amount you will have to pay when making a claim. By opting for a deductible of $500 instead of $300, for example, you’ll save a substantial amount of money on the annual cost of your insurance. 3. Use the same company for all your different insurance policies. Combining your policies with the same insurer may even save you enough money to pay a part (or even all) of an insurance premium. 4. Choose a two year contract. As a general rule, insurers give a considerable rebate when you sign a two year contract, whether for car or home insurance. This trick often has the added advantage of enabling you to avoid a rate increase. 5. Act responsibly. Many insurers will offer rebates if your vehicle or your house is protected by a security system, such as an alarm connected to a central monitoring station, anti-theft engraving, or an approved recovery system. 6. Lastly, be aware that it is possible to get additional savings if you request an on-line estimate or if you have never made any claims in the past. Be sure to ask about any rebates.

candidates forum and didn’t file a candidate statement for the voters pamphlet. The general election is Nov. 3. Almond’s no-show prompted a letter to the editor from Beth Worthington,

Three unopposed Poulsbo City Council candidates did respond and attended. “It is not fair to North Kitsap voters to ask them to cast a vote when no information is available. Our schools are too important to vote without knowing what the candidate believes in or what they will do.” Almond said Oct. 13 that he didn’t participate in the candidates forum because “I had something scheduled, I’ll leave it at that.” He said that although he didn’t submit a statement for the voters’ pamphlet, “I have my written statements online,” a reference to Q&As that he’s filled out. Of his priorities as a school board member, he said, “I’m a short-answered person. I support the union, the schools, the teachers, and our community. But do I have an agenda? No.” See DISTRICT 2, Page A15

Building Port Orchard author writes a sequel to ‘Swiss Family Robinson’

His book, “If You Think You Can!,” and a number of follow-up self-help book titles have become national New York Times best sellers for the former Tony Robbins protegé. While his specialty as an author is self-help non-fiction, he’s journeyed out of his comfort zone to pen a sequel to a fictional

ingly, from the Disney film starring John Mills and James MacArthur. “I remember watching it probably 20 times as a kid growing up, Hoisington said while seated in his elegant, bookshelf-lined office outside his Port Orchard home. Then one night in the early 2000s, Hoisington found his inspiration while sharing a movie night at home with his two boys. “I put in the Disney movie and they loved it, he said. “After we put them to bed, I couldn’t stop thinking about the story. After unsuccessfully trying to fall asleep, he bolted out of bed and headed to his laptop. Typing non-stop until 6 a.m., Hoisington had a 50-page first-draft outline of what eventually would become his sequel.

“That early morning, the answers began to flood my mind. The images were so vivid and real to me. Hoisington worked on the story over the next few months. On occasion, he’d guilelessly call movie producers and studios in Los Angeles to gauge their interest. “I’d hear the same thing each time: ‘We don’t take unsolicited scripts. Get an agent first.’ Undaunted, he turned the outline into a 122-page screenplay which, he said in retrospect, proved to be much easier to craft than writing the novel. After copywriting the manuscript, he shelved it when business matters took over his life. See SEQUEL, Page 3

Continued from page 2 “This process took place during a difficult time for me,” he said. “We were living in my parents’ basement apartment (in Port Orchard) and I was trying to get my motivational speaking business off the ground” after he left the Tony Robbins organization, where he was a trainer.
PAGE 3
This self-described “rah-rah kind of guy” took on another writing project that changed his life. Tapping on his laptop in the back seat of a car for eight hours a day — he said the apartment was too small and he needed a place to concentrate — Hoisington wrote the
self-published book “If You Think You Can!” With no advertising or marketing to promote it, the book nevertheless took off. Some 100,000 copies were sold, a rarity in the book business and almost unheard of for a self-published book. After that book became
a hit, his motivational-speaking business took off. He was busy, on the road and tending to his booming enterprise, which left almost no time for his screenplay. In free moments, he’d tinker with the idea of turning the screenplay into a book. But, as he
freely admitted, writing a book is a challenge. The reluctant author hired a ghostwriter and gave him general ideas about the story and its characters. But he wasn’t satisfied with what he read. “A couple of thousand dollars later, I said, ‘Thank you, but no thank you.’ And
I decided to take on the project myself.” It was important to him to stay true to the Wyss original, not the Disney film version. “There are some important differences between the two stories.” And Disney, he added with a smile, is famous for its rigid policy in protecting its copywritten work. “I hired a rights certification company to certify See SEQUEL, Page 4

the Wyss story was a public domain document,” he said. During that period, Hoisington purchased a number of original “Swiss Family Robinson” public-domain books dating back to 1818. One of those books was published in 1831, an eighth-edition book printed in London. Sitting in his office in May 2013, he began the writing process. “For me, writing is really hard. I’m not a prolific writer and certainly couldn’t write a book once a month like some authors do. I’m not that way.” Hoisington said he gave drafts of his incomplete work to “30 or 40 trusted allies, friends, readers and even some reviewers” to get their feedback. The provided comments were critical in shaping an accurate background for the book, he said. “I wanted softness and soul and believability in the story. As it turned out, many of the readers who were women really helped me
ing our community and learning how to be an inspirational role model, for girls to help build their confidence, which is my platform.” Brown is a junior at Western Washington University, and plans to graduate with a degree in biochemistry and pursue a career as a dentist. She is the WWU Pre-Dental Club president, and is a member of the WWU Special Olympics Unity Club and the Association for Women In Science Club. Brown was on the dean’s and president’s lists last year. Farrell is a member of the Klahowya Cheer Squad and is junior class president. She is active in the choir, Drama Club (with 19 productions under her belt), and Honor Society, and is a Teen Mentor. Both have begun to make appearances and will serve the community throughout the year while preparing for the Miss Washington and Miss Washington’s Outstanding Teen Pageants in 2016.
with that.” Some of the draft reviewers helped the author achieve a degree of historical accuracy: “I had written the character of Elizabeth Cole as having long, wavy brown hair. My team of readers quickly reminded me that back in the early 1800s, a woman didn’t routinely let down her hair if she was considered sophisticated.” He also had depicted characters Ernest Robinson and Elizabeth as riding in carriages and heading off on adventures alone. “I learned that such behavior was not appropriate for a sophisticated man or woman” during that era, he said. One of Hoisington’s goals in writing the book was to provide wholesome reading material for children and young adults. “I wanted to write something my boys would read. And that really was the intent of the original author, Johan David Wyss.” Hoisington, who is married and has four children, will be at Barnes & Noble in the Kitsap Mall for a book signing at 1 p.m. Oct. 17.

Top wines from Great Northwest Invitational By ANDY PERDUE and ERIC DEGERMAN
H
OOD RIVER, Ore. — For the second consecutive year, a white wine from British Columbia entranced the judges at the Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition. Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery’s 2014 Old Vines Auxerrois won best of show at the third annual competition, which took place at the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel. Gehringer Brothers is about 20 minutes north of the U.S. border near the city of Oliver. Last year, Wild Goose Vineyards from Okanagan Falls, British Columbia, won the top honors for a Riesling. The Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition is unique in the United States, as the wines entered are nominated by the judges — 20 wine professionals from throughout the Pacific Northwest. This year, 561 wines were entered, up from 425 wines a year ago. Auxerrois is a rare white grape variety that is native to France’s Loire Valley. It was introduced to British Columbia in the 1970s, when Helmut Becker, a researcher at Geisenheim University in West Germany, planted 60 wine grape varieties in two locations of the Okanagan Valley. Of all the varieties tested, Auxerrois proved to grow most successfully. However, no plants were immediately available, so most grape growers picked other varieties
The Columbia Gorge Hotel, built in 1921, hosts the Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition. This year, the judges chose a white wine from British Columbia as the top wine of the competition. Andy Perdue / Great Northwest Wine to focus on. But brothers Walter and Gordon Gehringer managed to obtain cuttings from the original test plants and propagated them, ultimately planting them in their vineyard overlooking Canada’s Golden Mile 30 years ago. Through the years, their Auxerrois has proven to be one of their best wines, winning awards across North America. However, the only way to obtain wines from Gehringer Brothers is to travel to British Columbia. Almost no Canadian wines are exported to the United States. Here are the five top wines from the third annual Great Northwest Wine Competition. ■ BEST OF SHOW — Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery 2014 Old Vines Auxerrois, Okanagan Valley, $13:
The Gehringer Brothers of the Okanagan Valley have a knack for producing amazing Auxerrois. Their 2014 vintage follows their recipe for success as aromas of starfruit and light citrus hint at a minerality that shows up in the finish to complement its bright, lip-smacking lime flavors. (12.9 percent alcohol, 1,600 cases) ■ BEST RED — Tamarack Cellars 2013 Merlot, Columbia Valley, $28: Tamarack Cellars made a stunning Merlot in its 2013 from Columbia Valley grapes, earning best-of-class honors among a raft of top Merlots, displaying blueberry notes atop the customary blackberries, plus just-right oak. In the mouth, the blueberries ride atop blackberry flavors that lead to a refined finish of sweet oak tannins and a final note of mineral-
ity. (14.2 percent alcohol, 900 cases) ■ BEST ROSÉ — Seven Hills Winery 2014 Dry Rosé, Columbia Valley, $17: Seven Hills Winery used Cabernet Franc from the Columbia Valley to craft this bone-dry rosé in 2014. The result is a spirited pink wine with a touch of leafiness, a hint of strawberry and watermelon in its aromas, which are reflected in its flavors as well. It finishes with a chorus of crisp acidity and
a final zing of red cherry fruit. (12.5 percent alcohol, 1,250 cases) ■ BEST SPARKLING — Karma Vineyards 2011 Pink Bubbly, Lake Chelan, $40: This pale pink sparkler from Karma Vineyards opens with strawberry, watermelon and yeast in its nose, which turn toward pie cherry and watermelon in the mouth. Crisp acidity, partly from its bubbles, helps balance a tiny bit of residual sugar, clearing the palate for the next sip of good karma. (13.5 percent alcohol, 300 cases) ■ BEST DESSERT — Thurston Wolfe 2013 Touriga Nacional Port,
Yakima Valley, $16: Wade Wolfe sourced grapes from the Yakima Valley for his 2013 Touriga Naçional Port, then turned it into this delightful drink with blackberries, blueberries, bitters and a touch of anise. It’s a complex and affordable Port-style built for pondering over a winter fire on a chilly night. (18 percent alcohol, 96 cases) — Eric Degerman and Andy Perdue run Great Northwest Wine, an award-winning news and information company. Learn more about wine at www.greatnorthwestwine. com.

Own some grunge history — for $329K
snapshot
N
orth Kitsap Herald reporter Sophie Bonomi photographed this piece of music history while driving home from the coast on Oct. 12. It’s Kurt Cobain’s childhood home at 1210 E. First St., Aberdeen, on the market for $329,000. That’s a bit more than the area’s median listing price of $135,900 — but what would you expect for the childhood home of the late Nirvana frontman (Feb. 20, 1967 — April 5, 1994)? According to a description on Redfin, the 1,522-square-foot, four-bedroom, one-bath house was built in 1923. “There are a number of exciting possibilities for this unique property, including moving the building and incorporating it into a larger institution or private collection,” Nancy Taylor of Aberdeen Realty wrote on Redfin. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of rock history.” Indeed. See interior photos of the home at www. redfin.com/WA/Aberdeen/1210-E-1st-St-98520/home/14785514
