Come election season, the goal and mission of the League of Women Voters (LWV) is to educate voters on their local issues and candidates. It was with this mission in mind that members of the LWV of Seattle-King County organized and moderated last week’s debate between Redmond’s mayoral candidates — incumbent John Marchione and challenger Steve Fields — at Emerald Heights. “Our whole purpose is to educate,” said Ruth Werntz, who lives in the retirement community and has been a member of the league for about 50 years.

Following complaints from area residents — including Redmond Mayor John Marchione — King County staff are working on possible solutions to control noise levels at Marymoor Park during its summer concert series. As previously reported, there were two concerts — featuring Sublime with Rome — after which the city

However, as Marymoor Park is in King County, the city does not have jurisdiction over what happens at the park. Alton Brown is a firm believer that home cooking can bring the philosophy of self-reliance from the notebook to the kitchen stove. “Cooking at home fixes almost everything,” Brown told a crowd of almost 1,800 strong at Bellevue’s Meydenbauer Center on Monday during Hopelink’s 20th Annual Reaching Out Luncheon to benefit the Redmond-based organization, which reached its goal of raising $1 million. The funds will provide food, shelter, family development, transportation and job readiness skills for homeless and low-income families, children, seniors and people with disabilities in north and east King County. “Cooking at home gives you better nutrition, far better cost per meal, it’s family building. Families that cook together often stay together. It gives you confidence, it creates community,” added the quirky, award-winning Food Network personality. Before the luncheon, Brown told the Reporter that as a child, he always hung around the kitchen

Redmond’s Michael Conforto is headed to another World Series. The debate came about after Emerald Heights administrators approached Werntz and asked her to find someone within the league to moderate the debate. She said the retirement community has hosted candidates’ meetings in the past, so they thought holding a debate would be the perfect opportunity to inform Emerald Heights residents on the mayoral election. “We know that the people that live here vote,” Werntz said. She said about 300 people attended the debate, adding that she was “extremely pleased” to see people from throughout Redmond — not just residents from the [ more DEBATE page 11 ] punched their ticket to the Major League Baseball World Series. According to a Cut4 story, Conforto can become the third person in baseball history to make an appearance in all three World Series. On Wednesday, the Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs, 8-3, to sweep the National League Championship Series, and now they await the winner of the Kansas City Royals-Toronto Blue Jays American League Championship Series for their World Series opponent. The Royals lead the series, 3-2, and the teams will square off again tonight. Conforto — who has one home run in the postseason — played in 56 games in the regular season and hit .270 with nine home runs, 14 doubles and 26 RBIs. The World Series will start on Tuesday.

TRICKS & TREATS

For the first time in its 10-year history, the Seattle South Asian Film Festival (SSAFF) is coming to Redmond. Today the SecondStory Hideaway at 7425 166th Ave. N.E., Suite C24 in Redmond Town Center will show three films as part of the 12-day film festival: “The Journey Within” (Pakistan), “Magizhvan” (India) and “Big Time: My Doodled Diary” (India/U.S.).

THE FILMS

“The Journey Within,” directed by Mian Adnan Ahmad, will screen at 7 p.m. The film tells the story of the journey of a music show that helped to reclaim Pakistan’s music heritage, post 9/11. “Magizhvan,” directed by Mani Shankar Iyer, begins at 9 p.m. and is based on a same-sex love story complicated by religion and family. “Big Time: My Doodled Diary,” directed by Sonali Gulati, will follow “Magizhvan” in the same screening and is the story of a teenaged girl growing up and coming out in the 1980s in India. Tickets are free but limited, so moviegoers are encouraged to reserve their tickets in advance on the SSAFF website: www.ssaff.tasveer.org. Joshua Heim, arts administrator for the City of Redmond, said while “The Journey Within,” will be a standalone screening, the other two films will be paired together as a double feature.

COMBATTING DISCRIMINATION THROUGH FILM

SSAFF is put on by Tasveer, an organization whose mission is to cultivate the artistic work of South Asians through films, forums, visual art, performances that engage and empower the community. Heim said Tasveer was founded in the aftermath of 9/11, when Sikhs and Muslims were targeted, harassed and discriminated against following the terrorists attacks. He said Tasveer (which means “picture” in Hindi and Urdu) co-founders Rita Meher and Farah Nousheen wanted to dispel the myths surrounding South Asians and educate people about their cultures. Their goals were to increase the awareness of South Asian countries and cultures from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, as well as to use independent South Asian film as a vehicle to give voice to marginalized communities. “These films touch on themes of upholding cultural identity and love in the face of extreme challenges,” said Meher, who is also the festival’s executive director, in a City of Redmond press release. “Social issues like these are on the minds of South Asians everywhere, even here in Redmond.” The first SSAFF was in 2004. In addition, Tasveer has added the South Asian International Documentary (SAID) film festival and its annual Aaina women’s

festival to its lineup.

SERVING THE POPULATION

SSAFF, Heim said, offers this opportunity as people can explore and learn about South Asian cultures and their varying and rich experiences. He added that the festival supports independent films, which can offer an alternative perspective from the well-known Bollywood film industry that predominantly features northern Indian culture. Whereas Redmond has a large south Indian population, Heim said. “One in 10 people in Redmond is of Indian descent,” said Jessica Rubenacker, Arts Season grant program coordinator, in the release. “Supporting organizations like Tasveer not only serves this community but bringing projects like the Seattle South Asian Film Festival to Redmond helps to build bridges across cultural communities. It’s been a great partnership.” In the release, Meher said they wanted to come to Redmond to be closer to their community. “I live in Sammamish, work in Redmond, in a cultural office space generously donated by Redmond,” she said. “By adding Redmond as our new city, Tasveer can help promote it as a new cultural hub. It’s been wonderful to engage people in conversations and discussions on some of the key South Asian issues that are of both local and global significance so close to home.” [ more FILMS page 3]

Redmond police arrest suspect in multiple car prowls After several months of careful and thorough investigation, Redmond Police Department (RPD) officers arrested Gerald Grimshaw on Oct. 13 for offenses related to six different Redmond police cases and one King County Sheriff ’s Department case. Redmond officers also recovered a firearm that Grimshaw is suspected of recently stealing during an alleged car prowl in King County. Grimshaw is suspected of committing multiple car prowls in Redmond and has just been charged with four counts of seconddegree vehicle prowling. He has also been charged with several other crimes, including theft and unlawful possession of a firearm, second-degree identity

theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and thirddegree possession of stolen property. He is currently being held on $30,000 bail at King County Jail. “This arrest is the culmination of great investigative work, coordination and attention to detail,” said Becky Range, RPD public information officer. “Officers work each case very hard and it takes time to painstakingly comb through different files and process evidence, especially when cases overlap.” Range added that officers visited local businesses to review surveil-

lance footage, coordinated well with each other and handled some delicate interviews to complete the investigation. “We know that many in our community have been victims of car prowls and we believe this arrest is very significant,” she said.

Marchione leads on creating choices

Many qualities can make a leader electable — fewer qualities make a truly effective mayor benefitting a whole community. I support John Marchione for re-election to mayor, to continue leading Redmond on the creation of more quality choices for our city’s future. Providing achievable choices is one of the best qualities of a constructive manager as well as an effective leader — as a council member then mayor, Marchione has crafted enduring options by which Redmond’s people may reliably choose an action to fulfill aspirations for their city. Many Redmond residents the last months have highlighted the many choices fellow residents have available out of Marchione’s leadership on two central points of this campaign: local participation in their city government’s processes and outcomes and regional growth. As those others wrote, I, too, trust Marchione will continue to: • Cultivate a Redmond culture that seeks input and listens to the choices of its residents — from improved daily customer service by city staff, to support of the volunteer commissions and task forces developing a breadth of citizen feedback to council. • Foster a unified city with a broad scope of citizen activities and city staff work enthusiastically coalesced around a vision for the city — directly influence what and how each fulfills their aspects of that vision. • Sharpen the civic role in Redmond’s current Budgeting by Priorities — more citizens than ever have direct access to the city budget, and influence priorities for funding those services most important to residents (this process works — after months of deliberation on the mayor’s proposed budget, council chose to not change the allocations to revenue, expense or investment). • Lead a council in regional leadership for smart growth, multimodal transportation and transit, affordable housing options and public safety. Redmond can stay ahead in the creation of options for choosing how continued growth (growth has always been here) is shaped to keep a desirable community in which to live, work, learn and play. • Apply his substantial experience chairing and actively serving on regional boards, commissions and task forces — effectively representing the city to various stakeholders while ensuring the city gets the solutions it needs (challenges from traffic and growth do not start at our city limits!). • Create housing option choices in Redmond’s urban centers for growth that comes with prosperity to have the least impact to the rest of the city and prevent further sprawl in established

residential neighborhoods (the State Growth Management Act requires Redmond to accept its share of regional projected growth — 13,000 more people over 20 years). • Smartly refine a growth-management strategy for growth to pay for growth — Redmond collects fees on all new development for impacts on transportation, parks, fire and utilities and collects local business tax dedicated to road construction improvements. • Preserve land for parks in growing areas for quality of life of current and future residents. I support John Marchione to continue leading us forward on Redmond’s choices.

Byron Shutz Redmond City Council member

Fields is the clear choice for mayor

The people of Redmond are fortunate. This election they have a choice for the next mayor of Redmond. Being the mayor for 16 years, 19922007, provided me with extensive knowledge of the city, the staff and operations. Thousands of people who call Redmond “home” trusted me to do the right things and to speak out. Today I am declaring my choice for Steve Fields to be the next mayor of Redmond. The choice is very clear. Steve Fields has the best qualifications of all the candidates who have ever run for mayor! Steve’s 36 years of experience in government and business is invaluable and unmatched. He can apply the best practices of both at Redmond city government but with a style, a sensitivity and inclusion that have been absent in Redmond city government for the past eight years. Since declaring his candidacy, I have talked with Steve and observed his thoughtful interactions with people during his extensive doorbelling more than 7,500 voters — there is nothing like face-to-face communications for a clear grasp of “Redmond” reality. How he handles criticism with introspection impresses me. Steve’s energy, his welcoming, comfortable style when talking with people, his curiosity about what people think and want, his careful and attentive listening and his resiliency reveals personal assets that would make him a great mayor. The choice is clear.

I don’t like what Redmond has become in the last four years — the poster child for “paved over paradise, put up a parking lot.” Our quality of life has declined significantly. Massive development everywhere, terrible traffic in all directions, stands of trees clear-cut — thanks to the incumbent who was part of the council majority that gave policy direction that resulted in how downtown and the rest of Redmond is today. Who do you think will pay the price and foot the bill? The mayor proposed two tax increases for public safety and parks, yet he had no problem finding $36 million for a downtown park and contributing funds to exclusive organizations that want to grow more jobs. Redmond is already a regional leader in job growth and now has more than 90,000 jobs and 5,000 licensed businesses. I think spending public dollars to grow more jobs that result in more traffic, more calls to police and fire, more demand for housing causing housing prices to skyrocket is foolish. The incumbent mayor promised to “live within our means,” but I think he simply is not making good financial choices. We need leadership that will put the people of Redmond first, ahead of developers’ interests, ahead of out of town regional commitments and ahead of big business. Unlike the incumbent, Steve Fields has no interest in higher office. The choice is clear. Steve Fields loves Redmond, its people and want to be our leader. His candidacy gives me hope and gives all of us a choice as to what we want for our future in Redmond. Please join me in voting for and electing Steve Fields the next mayor of Redmond.

Marchione can continue to make Redmond great

More than 100 years ago, Redmond began as a farming and lumber center then became a suburban bedroom community and now is a diverse city with thriving neighborhoods and an internationally renowned business community. Throughout, Redmond citizens have taken pride in their community with a clear vision of what they want to be and how to get there. doubt that Redmond is successful while maintaining the key qualities that make Redmond, Redmond. Having a clear vision is essential to that success but there are other equally important elements. It takes a long term and consistent commitment to that vision. Redmond has been committed to preserving our neighborhoods and focusing growth into two centers — downtown and Overlake where growth can be successfully accommodated. Success requires investment. If others are asked to invest in Redmond, Redmond must be willing to invest. Redmond has invested throughout the community in many ways such as building a citywide parks system and a transportation system. Those investments and other has spurred others to invest and reinvest in Redmond. To achieve Redmond’s vision, innovation is required. Redmond has been on the cutting edge in such efforts as protecting our environment, increasing the variety of housing opportunities and making budgeting and capital investment decisions

transparent. Partnerships must be forged to be successful. Whether within neighborhoods to enhance the neighborhood or in the region to build a transit center in our downtown or bring light rail to our community, successful partnerships have been created. But above all these qualities the most essential element is leadership to make the vision real, to focus the community’s efforts, to steward the resources of the community and to create the atmosphere where innovation is celebrated and the key partnerships created. Without skilled and visionary leadership, all these other elements and any other advantages a community may have will fall short. Each of us has been fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work with the Redmond community as its planning director in defining and implementing Redmond’s vision. We know the qualities and efforts it has taken for Redmond to become the great community that it is today. Over the last eight years, the community’s vision has come to life

and a key reason for that is the clear, consistent and steady leadership that John Marchione has provided and Marchione has the key quality of leadership that will continue to make Redmond the great city that it is. His re-election ensures that the qualities that have made Redmond great will continue. That is why we are strongly united in endorsing his re-election.

Kay Shoudy, former Redmond planning director Ron McConnell, former Redmond planning director

Common-sense leadership for Redmond I recently had the opportunity to get input from Steve Fields on how he would approach important issues affecting the City of Redmond, if elected mayor. I really liked what he had to say. Steve seems in touch with the needs of Redmond residents and encourages community involvement and input. In particular, I was impressed with his com-

mitment to form a stronger partnership than what currently exists with the Lake Washington School District to alleviate the overcrowding in Redmond schools. I agree with Steve that it is the responsibility of the city to plan and understand the impact that growth will have on residents’ quality of life, even where the city has no direct control. Redmond families and students have already suffered the brunt of poor planning with larger class sizes, forced boundary changes and now an array of sub-optimal options on the table to deal with a significant shortage of space. Steve also supports working much closer with the district on shorter-term items like quicker permitting on portables and assisting with traffic and safety problems in school areas — fostering a stronger partnership and better outcomes for our students. When I look around Redmond, I see massive construction projects and increased traffic, some of which has been caused by costly infrastructure projects that have only exacerbated the problem. I see a multi-million-dollar downtown park that I’ve never personally seen anyone use,

and is unusable anyway by families given it is unfenced and sits in between two highly trafficked roads. The incidence of homelessness has increased dramatically, and I’m betting none of the recently built apartment buildings downtown are going to create places for the poor and homeless to live. Residents are being asked for more of their money to pay for basic services. Investment is happening in the wrong places. We need leadership who will budget effectively for basic city services, partner with the school district to solve overcrowding and reduce permit fees local churches pay to house homeless encampments. Although I appreciate the efforts made to create a livelier downtown atmosphere, it’s time to move toward a common-sense approach to Redmond’s growth and associated problems. Steve Fields seems like he will work toward a Redmond that benefits all of its residents, and not primarily downtown developers and big businesses.

Time for a change on LWSD School Board

To “conform” or to “transform”? For voters in the Lake Washington School District (LWSD), this is our decision. As citizens, taxpayers and parents in the LWSD, we have a critical decision to make for our community. Several school construction bonds on previous ballots were not passed by voters. In the April 2014 proposal, less than 20 percent of precincts voted to pass the bond. Having spent time with those who rejected previous bonds, I can sincerely empathize with their position. However, as a result of these failures, we are now in a position where incredible prosperity in our communities and corresponding growth in the count of students cannot be met by capacity in our schools. We are out of space, and our classrooms are overcrowded. Imagine how we as adults would learn in a setting that is [ more LETTERS page 6 ]

OneRedmond evolves to meet the needs of business Coming out of the great recession, it was clear that Redmond’s business organizations were not meeting the needs of its members or supporting the health of the local and regional economy. Like all businesses at the time, the Chamber of Commerce, Realize Redmond and the Redmond Economic Development Alliance were all struggling to find a direction and financial footing. In response to the very real challenges they faced, the three organizations with the partnership of the City of Redmond merged, incorporated and funded a new public/private partnership to lead business growth in the region. OneRedmond was charged to do four simple things: 1) support our existing businesses, large and small, and their growth; 2) recruit new businesses to the community to diversify the economic base; 3) promote arts and events to enhance the vibrancy of our downtowns; and 4) work with the city to ensure that we are the most competitive area for business investment. Despite being fully operational for only two years, we are delivering on our promises. We have supported expansion of our existing businesses and supported the location of new business such as Super Jock ‘N Jill, Sonata Software and Seattle Aero. have always provided small businesses the opportunity for participation, we are proactively engaging the community and have increased the number of small business members by 36 percent over the last four months. Second, we heard loudly that small businesses lamented the loss of their networking opportunities. We responded with our quarterly Community Connections event in partnership with Redmond Marriott Town Center. This well-attended event highlights small business and provides a great opportunity to meet other small business owners and leaders. Finally, in partnership with the Small Business Administration and Washington State University, we funded the opening of the Small Business Development Center to provide free confidential one-onone counseling to firms looking to expand or improve their operations. This center, staffed by a well-qualified counselor, provides services to small to medium sized business in various sectors. Our evolution as the business and economic development leader on the Eastside is not done. Next year will see a broader number of business training and network events and a concerted effort to grow the organization. Our business community and region require a strong and concerted community and economic development effort if we are to remain the competitive and livable city we enjoy. If you or your business are interested in more information about participating or supporting the economic development of your community please contact us at info@oneredmond.org or contact Heidi Archer, director of investor relations, at (425) 8854014.

loud and crowded. A Cornell study even linked overcrowding in the classroom and life to learned helplessness and increased stress. I can’t imagine this is a result anyone wants as we develop the future leaders in our society. It is vital we elect new leadership to our School Board. We need leaders who will collaborate across constituent groups to bring a bond proposal to voters that gives our kids a learning environment where they have space to learn and reach their full potential, but at a cost taxpayers deem fiscally responsible and reasonable. It has been said that LWSD’s test scores are a result of the incumbent School Board members. This may be true, but I also believe our test scores and results speak for the excellence of our teachers, school principals, students and parents. If we fail another bond proposal, we will have to enact alternative solutions to house our students. These alternatives will negatively impact our ability to attract and retain top teaching talent, the first domino to fall in our fragile district ecosystem. I want to thank the incumbents for their investment on behalf of our kids, but as I cannot support complacency, I will be voting for Eric Laliberte and Rob Tepper this November. Their fresh perspective and leadership will improve engagement across the community, and bring a winning bond proposal to the ballot. As Lincoln once stated, “The best way to predict the future is to create it” and it’s our chance to transform and start now.

Supporting Pendergrass, Carlson and Bliesner

The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) has three important school board races this November: districts #1, #2 and #5. Fortunately, we have three outstanding candidates all running for re-election: Jackie Pendergrass,

Chris Carlson, and Siri Bliesner. Jackie, Chris, and Siri are strong advocates for our most valuable resource — our students. Their leadership has helped our school district become one of the finest in the state, if not the nation. All three have a strong sense of fiscal responsibility, and all have been wise stewards of our taxpayer dollars. As volunteers in our classrooms, they also have first-hand experience with the issues facing public education today. The LWSD is facing tremendous challenges due to an unprecedented growth in student population. It’s important that we retain Jackie, Chris and Siri so they can continue their excellent work in steering our district in the right direction toward solving the problems this growth has created. Now is not the time to risk our future by electing unproven candidates. Please support Jackie Pendergrass, Chris Carlson and Siri Bliesner for re-election to the LWSD School Board.

Vote ‘yes’ on King County Proposition 1

Each year, families rely on Boys & Girls Clubs to provide a safe, positive place for more than 17,000 King County kids. We believe in their physical, emotional and intellectual well-being. Closing the opportunity gap, improving grades, reducing high school drop-out rates, and teaching kids to see themselves as learners is crucial. Our programs also reduce juvenile crime rates and instill an attitude of community engagement. Best Starts for Kids, King County Prop. 1, is a critical tool to support these goals. Best Starts for Kids funding will benefit youth development programs and our community by investing in the following: • Strategies focusing on children under age 5 and pregnant women, such as home visits for new parents and their children. • Strategies focusing on children and youth age 5-24, such as early

intervention to prevent teen depression and substance abuse. • Creating safe and healthy communities, such as increasing access to healthy, affordable food and expanding economic opportunities and access to affordable housing. • Creating a youth and family homelessness prevention initiative modeled on a successful pilot implemented by organizations serving survivors of domestic violence. • Evaluation, data collection, and improving the delivery of services and programs for children and youth. This will ensure Best Starts for Kids strategies are tailored for children from every background. The lack of early support for children results in costly interventions later in life, and incarceration is the most costly and least effective intervention. Continued action needs to be taken to strengthen the future of our kids. The demand for youth development programs continues to rise. Safe, healthy communities reinforce a child’s early development and provide a fair chance at success, regardless of where they live or their family income. The proposed levy would affect property owners minimally each year compared to the good it can do. Not only will this levy help our children, it is a program for continued economic growth because it will help us nurture the problem solvers and innovators our communities need. We wish to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. It takes all of us to ensure children and teens are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. Public investment is required to make this happen. We urge people to vote “yes” on King County Prop. 1 by election day, Nov. 3.

Asante named Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year When Liza Van Valkenburg first got her stylist’s license, it was just something that made sense at the time. She just fell into the profession as her husband at the time was also a stylist. Prior to going into the profession, she had been a preschool teacher but was getting burnt out on it. It turned out that Van Valkenburg enjoyed the work and was really good at styling hair, so she turned it into a career. In May 2007, she opened her own salon — Asante Salon — at 16528 Cleveland St., Suite D in downtown Redmond. The Duvall resident said at the time, she was a single mother with two kids (who were 3 and 5 years old at the time) and wanted to be able to provide them with a decent living, help them pay for college and offer them other opportunities. She felt if she were to open her own business and make it suc-

cessful, she would be able to do that. Almost a decade later, Van Valkenburg has achieved just that and others are taking notice. Earlier this month, Asante was named the Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year at the King County Executive’s Small Business Awards. “I was really surprised,” Van Valkenburg said about receiving the award. She first learned about the award after receiving an email from the City of Redmond, encouraging small businesses in town to apply as they wanted to see the city represented. “I thought, why not?” Van Valkenburg said about nominating Asante. And she wasn’t the only one to think this. In addition to Asante, two other Redmond businesses were recognized at this year’s awards ceremony. Magellan Architects was named a finalist for Minority Small Business of the Year and Keep It Simple (KIS) Farm was a finalist in the Rural

Small Business of the Year category. Both businesses were honored by the county’s recognition and emphasized their connections within the local community. “Our business strives to help its local and national clients such as Costco, Bank of America and Bartell Drugs,” said Pedro Castro, owner of Magellan Architects. “These companies allow an MBE- and DBE-certified firm such as Magellan to be successful because of trust and the value they place on high-quality service. We are grateful and honored to work alongside our clients to help them achieve their project goals.” Tad Hussey with KIS Farm added that they are happy to be in Redmond and are working to serve the community better. “We are hoping to continue to improve KIS Farm with an even better selection of organic veggie starts and vegetables, as well as [ more BUSINESS page 8 ] Paid Advertisment

Proposal to remove the UCO Corporation Site from the Hazardous Sites List Public Comment Period: Oct. 23- Nov. 23, 2015 The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) is proposing to remove the UCO Corporation Site (Site) from the State Hazardous Sites List. The Site is located at 9225 151st NE, Redmond, WA. The property is a 0.43 acre parcel in a mixed commercial and light industrial area.

Documents can be viewed at: Washington State Department of Ecology Northwest Regional Office 3190 160th Ave SE, Bellevue, WA 98008 Call for an appointment at (425) 649-7190

This Site was ranked a five and placed on the Hazardous Sites List. The Hazardous Site List (HSL) is a record of contaminated sites throughout the state that are ranked on a scale of one to five. One represents the greatest potential threat to human health and the environment relative to all sites ranked, and five represents the least potential threat. Ecology’s Voluntary Cleanup Program reviewed cleanup actions at the Site and is recommending removal of this site from the HSL. The Site meets state cleanup standards for soil protective to human health and the environment. UCO Corporation, a backpacking and mountaineering equipment company, operated at the property from 1977 to 2012. Equipment was manufactured from extruded aluminum. Improper disposal of used cutting oil and compressor oil as well as aluminum shavings is the source of the release. Currently, the Property is occupied by RC painting, which uses the building for storage and office space.

In December 2013 a total of 14.87 tons of oil range total petroleum hydrocarbons, carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aluminum contaminated soil were removed from the site. Soil samples collected from the excavated area showed not all the contaminated soil was removed. Additional excavation of 2,400 pounds of contaminated soil was removed in February 2015. Soil samples collected from the excavation confirmed all contaminated soil had been removed. Groundwater sampling was also conducted. Soil and groundwater concentrations are below state cleanup standards. lenging District 2 incumbent Christopher Carlson. Incumbent Siri Bliesner, representing District 5, is running unopposed. Pendergrass, serving her fifth term on the board, said that her focus has been ensuring that there are a wide range of programs available for students, as well as choice schools with smaller classroom sizes. “In my 20 years on the board, we’ve (started) a lot of…programs in individual schools, we have choices schools that are smaller and meet some students’ needs,” she said. “I’ve championed for those. While I think we’ve done a good job, there are probably others we aren’t reaching, and I’m looking to see how can we reach them.” Last year’s failed bond measure would have raised $750 million. It garnered a majority voter approval, but failed to get the required 60 percent to pass. At the same time, the school district has been the fastest-growing district in King County during the past several years. Follow-

ing the bond measure’s failure, the district has repurposed funds to make better use of existing facilities and redrawn district boundaries in order to accommodate the student population, the latter of which initially drew criticism from certain communities. Pendergrass said the supermajority, needed to pass the bond, means the district has to have better outreach. “I think we learned from our bond failures. The tough thing is reaching 60 percent of voters when you have a lot of people in the community who don’t have kids in schools,” she said. “Voters have to understand the need and the costs and what would be the best thing to do… it’s working to really educate our voters. It would have been easier if it didn’t cost (so much), and when we surveyed afterwards, that was one of the main reasons people put ‘no.’ They didn’t want to pay more. And at a time, that was kind of the tendency (of voters), not just

with us.” As for student growth, Pendergrass said that she believes the solution can be found in working with the community, as well as the district. “I still enjoy being a board member,” she said. “It’s interesting. I work with good people. It’s a good school district.” Laliberte said one of the reasons he has decided to enter the race is because he and his wife plan to start a family and wants the current problems dealt with before they get there. “By the time my kids are in the district, I’d like to have (the district) on the turn of getting fixed,” he said. A member of the Long Term Facilities Task Force, he said that his involvement on the committee has made it clear that new leadership at a district level is needed. “I feel like there is the perception that the district is sort of complacent in how to do things differently,” he said. “It remains a very frustrating process to

be a part of this task force. The district needs to look at doing things differently.” One area he said that needs improvement is community engagement as part of facilities planning. “It remains top down,” he said. “There’s usually a plan put in place. It’s disseminated and people are told to get on board, essentially. For a district this large, both size and class, the only effective way to do community planning is to do community generated planning.” This lack of community outreach, Laliberte said, is also partly to blame for the bond measure failures, especially when there has been organized opposition to the most recent bond measures the district has put on the ballot. “One of the things the district or our leadership needed to do was address some of the concerns the opposition raised,” he said. “The idea that the district is building ‘Taj Mahal’ schools, there was not a response to that. There was [ more LWSD page 9 ]

viding a written response to a writing prompt — to when she learned she was a finalist, it was about two months. Once she was notified, there was a bit more writing to do as she was asked a

few followup questions about her business. Van Valkenburg did not find out that she had received the top honor in her category until about a month later at the award ceremony on Oct. 13. As a business owner and employer, Van Valkenburg said she focuses on providing a supportive work environment for everyone. “I really wanted to create an atmosphere where the staff are valued,” she said. Van Valkenburg said she wanted to provide a good work balance for her staff and respect their time outside of the salon, working around their schedules when it came to their work hours, maternity leave and more. In addition, she said Asante works with local community groups, supporting various causes such as contributing to local charity auctions and contributing a portion of their retail revenue to support Lifewire, an Eastside organization that supports domesticviolence survivors. “We do value the community,” Van Valkenburg said.

www.redmond-reporter.com not a coherent message as to why the bond was at the level it was at.” He also said making several small changes or adjustments to the plans, such as removing unnecessary computer labs and constructing two-story school buildings, can help lower the costs and emphasize to voters that the tax revenue will be well spent. “I think just conveying to the community you’ve created as many little wins as you can… gives you credibility,” he said. “Simply building the cheapest school possible is not the objective, but it is a criteria.” In District 2, Carlson said he has decided to run again because the issue of growth has to be dealt with. “I think I need to stick around because we’ve been growing at an unprecedented rate,” he said. “With that level of growth, there are growing pains. The thing about growing as a school district is you can grow proactively and you can decide how you’re going to grow. We’re going to

have to make some really important decision on how we grow in the next couple of years.” Having served two terms on the board, Carlson said his work to get school curriculum changed has given him a strong understanding on how to influence local education. “When I was upset about the math curriculum I asked ‘how do you change this?’ We’ve got to change the standards at the state level first. You have to understand where the pressure points and leverage points are,” he said. On the bond measure, he said the district asked for too much in one bond last time and without context. “We asked for a lot of money and I made the assumption that the district voters would understand,” he said. “We were asking for three quarters of a billion dollars. It’s a big number. When we heard gasps in the room it should have been a wakeup call.” Like Pendergrass, he also attributed well-organized opposition in the

community to the bond’s failure. While the district has tried to make do without new facilities, Carlson said the next time a bond is presented to the voters it will need to pass if they’re going to be able to take in any more growth. “Passing that bond is critical,” he said. “The most important thing for the district is to grow thoughtfully once we pass the bond. We got to deal with the overcrowding.” One major hurdle to getting a bond passed, he said, is the inability of the district or district board members to actually campaign for the bond. Tepper said his experience attending numerous district board meetings as a parent inspired him to ultimately run against Carlson. “I started leaving meetings more and more frustrated,” he said. The main source of frustration, he said, has been the overcrowding schools due to repeated bond failures, a problem he said other districts have not had.

It worked out OK, but then I found that it was just really great to be able to do anyway. And then I kind of got addicted to this selfreliance of it, you know, ‘I’m gonna make my own bacon, I don’t need anybody to make my bacon for me’ and stuff like that.”

www.redmond-reporter.com After college, Brown delved into a career of directing TV commercials, but cooking was always a part of his life as a hobby. When he decided he wanted to make TV shows about cooking, he enrolled at the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vt., to get things rolling. A few decades and many successes later, Brown received an invitation from Hopelink about seven or eight months ago to be the guest speaker at this year’s luncheon.

Brown researched the organization and was intrigued by its system of getting people out of poverty. “Organizations that are just into relief tend to create dependency in a lot of ways because they just keep giving stuff away. That helps to stabilize people — in the long run, you’ve gotta have a plan for getting people out the door in a different place,” Brown told the Reporter. Brown said Hopelink’s keys are referring to people in need as clients, whom they closely counsel because everybody is different and everybody’s situation is different. Also featured at the luncheon were in-person and on-video testimonials from clients who were once homeless and have benefitted from Hopelink’s services. While entering their new Hopelink abode, sisters Sae and Nora El Naby said, “I’m home and I’m looking forward to tomorrow” and “it felt great, liberating, safe. To look around

In another video, client Ritty So told her son about Hopelink lending them a hand, “There are angels all around us.” Added Brown: “So, to me it seems to really be an organization that is actually pulling off what they say they’re trying to do. I only wish they could spread down in my neck of the woods, because we could use some Hopelink down in Georgia, that’s for sure.” Brown feels that luncheon attendees had a rare gem of an opportunity to actually invest in

changing human beings’ lives through donations. He wrote out a check and made an investment on the spot, noting that he hopes the local organization spreads and plants seeds in other communities across the country. During his luncheon speech, Brown focused on hospitality and how it’s a crucial part of human connectivity that Hopelink strives to achieve. He mentioned that he’s spoken with people who have battled their way out of poverty and twice they noted that cooking Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for others were the highlights of getting back on their feet again.

With the crowd looking on, nodding their heads and some people softly clapping, Brown continued his story with another poignant message: “Once you learn how to cook, you learn enough about ingredients to feed people — the sharing of that blessing. The blessing of being able to pass on food, love, something of yourself to other people is an amazingly potent and powerful tool.” Brown added that sharing one’s cooking gives people pride, self-respect and dignity, which should be the goal of anyone who is trying to take care of the problem of poverty.

Retirement in Reverse: Better read this if you are 62 or older and still making mortgage payments. More than 1 million seniors have taken advantage of this “retirement secret.” Americans are living longer. Home values are up. And for many senior citizens, their home is their single biggest asset, often accounting for more than 50% of their net worth. With the cost of basic necessities such as food on the rise, it’s no wonder why more and more seniors are using HECM reverse mortgages to turn their home equity into extra cash for retirement. However, there are still millions of homeowners who could benefit from this FHA-insured loan but may simply not be aware of this “retirement secret,” notes Former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson. “You know, some people have told me that reverse mortgages sound too good to be true. You get cash out of your home, no monthly payments, and you still own your home,” says Senator Thompson. NO MONTHLY MORTGAGE PAYMENTS?* EXTRA CASH? It’s true, no monthly mortgage payments are required with a reverse mortgage; the homeowners only have to pay for maintenance, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and, if required, their HOA fees. In fact, reverse mortgages took hold when president Ronald Reagan signed the FHA mortgage bill into law over 25 years ago to help senior citizens remain

in their homes. “They’re simply an effective way for folks 62 and older to get the cash they need to enjoy their retirement,” notes Thompson. FACT: In 1988 Pres- Although today’s HECM ident Reagan signed reverse mortgages have the FHA Reversebeen greatly improved Mortgage Bill. to provide greater protection for homeowners, there are still a lot of misconceptions. For example, many people mistakenly believe the home must be paid off in full in order to qualify for a reverse mortgage, which is not the case. One key benefit of a reverse mortgage is that it automatically pays off your existing mortgage, which frees up cash flow, a huge blessing for those on a fixed income. Unfortunately, many homeowners who could benefit from a reverse mortgage don’t even bother to get more

information due to rumors they’ve heard. That’s a shame because reverse mortgages are helping many seniors live a better life. A recent survey by American Advisors Group (AAG), the nation’s number one reverse mortgage lender, found that 97% of their clients were satisfied with their reverse mortgages. *If you qualify and your loan is approved, a HECM Reverse Mortgage must pay off your existing mortgage(s). With a HECM Reverse Mortgage, no monthly mortgage payment is required. Borrowers are responsible for paying property taxes and homeowner’s insurance (which may be substantial). We do not establish an escrow account for disbursements of these payments. Borrowers must also occupy home as primary residence and pay for ongoing maintenance; otherwise the loan becomes due and payable. The loan must be paid off when the last borrower, or eligible non-borrowing surviving spouse, dies, sells the home, permanently moves out, or does not comply with the loan terms. Anyone who donates more than $100 will be entered to win two round trip tickets on Alaska Airlines. RPD will be at the Red Robin restaurants at 7597 170th Ave. N.E. in Redmond Town Center and 2390 148th Ave. N.E. in Overlake from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4-8 p.m.

City seeks volunteers for Parks and Trails Commission The City of Redmond is recruiting new volunteer members for the Parks and Trails Commission. Two positions are currently open for residents that live within the city limits. Applications are now being accepted and eligible residents are encouraged to apply by Oct. 30. For more than 25 years, the Parks and Trails Commission has improved the quality of life for the Redmond community by advising the mayor and City Council on parks, trails and recreational facility planning and programming in the city. The commission also interfaces with the

broader community, so that it can represent community members’ interests to the City Council. Currently, the commission is providing recommendations on the 2016 update to the Park, Arts, Recreation, Culture and Conservation Plan, the Downtown Park design, the Recreation Buildings Master Plan and the upcoming budget. Commissioners serve three-year terms and attend monthly meetings (first Thursday of each month); participate on special committees and attend public meetings and events; cultivate community engagement around Parks and Recreation Department projects and programs; and occasionally meet with City Council and other commissions, as appropriate. To learn more about the Parks and Trails Commission, or to apply, download an application at redmond. gov/Government/BoardsCommissions/ParksTrailsCommission. Applications can be mailed to the Office of the Mayor, City of Redmond, PO Box 97010, Redmond, WA 98073-9710 or faxed to (425) 556-2110. To register, visit www. runsignup.com/poultrypredictor Registration for the 5K includes a long-sleeve technical shirt, finisher medal, chip timing and a donation to Open Kitchen, and samples from participating sponsors Krave Jerky, Vita Coco and KIND Snacks. The city will partner for a third year with Open Kitchen, which is a local, grassroots, all-volunteer program that is fueled by passion to serve others and funded exclusively by donations from the community and local businesses. Every Wednesday from 5-7 p.m., Open Kitchen serves a warm, nutritious, free meal to anyone who walks through our door. All meals are served on ceramic plates and with silverware, cloth napkins are laundered each week, cans are recycled, plastics reused, and all food scraps composted. The top five closest times in the Predictor division will win turkeys. Courtesy of Super Jock ‘N Jill, the non-Predictor division will award gift certificates for top male and female finishers in each age group. Additional turkeys, pies and gift certificates from Iron Tribe Fitness and Voya Financial will be raffled to all participants.

ship between the City of Redmond, Forterra and dedicated volunteers, has been working since 2009 to bring more than 1,000 acres of forested parkland into active management through the removal of non-native, invasive plants and planting native trees and shrubs. On Oct. 31, volunteers will participate in a fun morning of restoration during Green Redmond Day. Planting events will be held at Farrel-McWhirter, Meadow and Westside Parks from 9 a.m. to noon. Sign up at www.greenredmond. org. Advanced registration is strongly encouraged as some sites will fill up. Green cities throughout the region will be holding planting events in October and November. Redmond is one partner in a larger, regional effort that includes the cities of Kent, Everett, Kirkland, Seattle, Tacoma, Tukwila and Puyallup to restore and maintain more than 7,500 acres of publicly owned urban natural areas and forests. “The accomplishments of the Green Redmond Partnership through dedicated volunteer Forest Stewards and eager community volunteers demonstrates the strong link between building healthy forests and building community,” said Mayor John Marchione.

No experience is necessary and tools will be provided along with instructions on how to plant trees to ensure a long and healthy life. This is an excellent learning experience for kids and aspiring gardeners alike.

Mayuri Indian Cuisine opens new location in Redmond The owners of the Mayuri Family of Food businesses, a leader in specialty foods in the Seattle area, have closed their popular Bellevue restaurant and moved to a freestanding building a few blocks away at 2115 Bel-Red Road in Redmond. Situated on a prominent

corner, the restaurant is surrounded by a large guest parking lot and a seasonal patio adjacent to the saffron-colored building. The 130-seat Indian restaurant and bar opened in mid-September. The move allows for a significant upgrade to the dining experience for many daytime tech workers and local patrons. The new location also has a larger kitchen and has a contemporary feel. Happy hour and daily specials join the current format of an abundantly, fresh lunch buffet with quick, friendly service and a-la-carte dinner menu.
