BREMERTON — One man was killed in a high-speed, nighttime, five-vehicle crash at the intersection of Kitsap Way and National Avenue Nov. 6. Gian King, 18, a passenger in the car that was struck, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, at Harborview Medical Center. According to the Bremerton Police Department, a sleepy driver was likely the cause of the crash. According to BPD, the crash began as a white 1990sera Honda Accord occupied by King and two other people was stopped at the light and waiting to turn. The adult female driver of another vehicle, a red Kia sedan, approached from behind, northbound on National, coming down the hill at a high rate of speed. According to the BPD, the woman had likely fallen asleep, causing the vehicle to roll along the sidewalk on the east side of National Avenue. The Kia then slammed into the right rear of the stopped

SILVERDALE — Higher density is likely to be a part of Silverdale’s future as the Central Kitsap area continues to grow. To help prepare for the coming growth, Kitsap County has created a plan for the core area called the Silverdale Regional Center, said Darren Gurnee, associate planner for the county. He spoke to the Central Kitsap Community Council Oct. 21. The basic plan is to create a core that is friendlier to pedestrians and features mixeduse development. By creating the plan, Silverdale has a chance to qualify for infrastructure improvement funding. The idea is to make the core a walkable,
healthy community with major destination points – such as Kitsap Mall, the schools, the planned new library, major retail areas, the hospital and Clear Creek Trail – connected via a tree-lined green corridor network. Sidewalks would have a buffer area that kept them further away from the road. To ensure walkability, the regional center is only about one mile wide. Silverdale, Gurnee said, was ranked by one organization as scoring just 17 out of 100 for “walkability.” Gurnee said that ground-level storefronts needed to have large windows so that pedestrians could see what was around a corner, thus giving them a sense of safety. Gurnee said that a study showed that if the storefronts were opaque, pedestrians tended to avoid walkSEE GROWTH, A9

Auto dealers raise $60,046 for cancer research BREMERTON — West Hills Auto Plex raised $60,046 this October to be donated to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. The sum is $20,000 more than the previous year. According to Fred Hutch, one in three women will get cancer in their lifetime, and breast cancer ranks as the most common form of cancer. This hit close to home for the Auto Plex as employees and employee family members have been diagnosed or are currently fighting the battle. With these facts, West Hills Auto Plex designated October to improving the lives of those who have fought or are fighting breast cancer. During breast cancer awareness month, in October, West Hills Auto Plex donated $25 for each vehicle purchased; donated $5 for every
service repair order; offered customers the opportunity to match the donation made; raised awareness for breast cancer with pink wrist bands, pink ribbons and pink t-shirts; and raised funds online via GoFundMe. The West Hills Auto Plex comprises five auto dealerships consisting of Heartland Toyota Scion, Haselwood Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, West Hills Honda, West Hills Kia, and West Hills Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge. All dealerships partnered for the fundraiser.

t’s been another deadly year on Kitsap’s roads. With winter weather nearing, it could get worse. But it doesn’t have to. Please drive carefully out there. Drive defensively and be aware that other drivers may not drive as carefully as you do. Watch for obstacles on the road. Drive for the conditions. On Nov. 10, a car collided into a refuse truck on Sawdust Hill Road near Poulsbo; the passenger in the car was killed instantly. The driver was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. Later that afternoon, a driver crashed into the Kitsap Bank on High School Road on Bainbridge Island. Suspected cause: unsafe vehicle speed. On Nov. 6, one motorist was killed and two others were injured in a five-car crash at Kitsap Way and National Avenue in Bremerton. The cause: The driver at fault may have fallen asleep at the wheel. On Oct. 30, Navy Petty Officer First Class Jared Knight’s motorcycle was reportedly sideswiped by a vehicle that made an unsafe lane change on Highway 3 at Anderson Hill Road. Knight died two days later at Harborview Medical Center. On Sept. 23, Robert Frank Dawson, 88, of Bainbridge Island man was killed and three others were injured in a head-on collision on Highway 104 near Port Ludlow. The cause: The driver of another vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane. Later that day, a motorist was flown to Harborview Medical Center after his GMC truck went off the overpass near the Keyport/Bangor exit of Highway 3. The cause: “From what we can tell, he went to cross too soon and sped down the guard rail and over the bridge,” Washington State Patrol Trooper Michael Welander said at the time. The motorist died later at Harborview. On July 4, Jordan Adams-Wickham was killed when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while walking in Indianola. That same day, Joshua J. Doyle was killed when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle attempting to pass him on Central Valley Road in Silverdale. On June 5, William J. Bracking was killed when his motorcycle was struck by car making an illegal U-turn on the SR 16 onramp at Burley-Olalla Road. On March 11, Benjamin MacQueen of Sequim was killed and two people injured following a head-on collision on Highway 104 near Kingston. The cause: MacQueen’s vehicle crossed the center line. On Jan. 11, Olympic High School students Kassidy Miranda Clark, Jenna Farley and Luther James Wiggins-Stoudermire were killed when SEE DRIVE SAFE, A5

crashed head-on into another vehicle; she and the other driver were seriously injured. The cause: The minivan driver was allegedly intoxicated. Drunken driving, speeding, distracted driving and not wearing a seatbelt are the major causes of injuries and deaths in motor-vehicle crashes in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 35,900 traffic deaths nationwide in
2009; according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there were 32,719 traffic deaths in 2013. “Given that fact that the majority of collisions are caused by human behaviors that are preventable, there is hope that these fatality rates can continue to be reduced,” the Accident Data Center reports. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Educate instead of squelching speech
The Bremerton Patriot editors claim our right to freedom of religion is protected by the Establishment Clause, prohibiting government from making any law “respecting an establishment of religion.” While this is true, it is protected even more significantly by the Free Exercise Clause saying government may not prohibit the free exercise of religion. The Patriot editors completely ignore this crucial part of the First Amendment. The one Supreme Court decision the editors quote regarding “School sponsorship of a religious message” regarded prayers being read over the school’s public address system. It should be obvious to all that Coach Kennedy’s private prayers are not
school sponsored. If there is any doubt, the school can follow guidelines from the U.S. Dept. of Education and make a disclaimer that the prayer is his and not the school’s. Other court opinions make clear that Coach Kennedy does not lose his free exercise of religion rights by being a school employee. In Bd. of Education v. Mergens, 1990, the Supreme Court states, “there is a crucial difference between government speech endorsing religion, which the Establishment Clause forbids, and private speech endorsing religion, which the Free Speech and Free Exercise Clauses protect.” The same opinion also states, “The proposition that schools do not endorse everything they fail to censor is not complicated.” Our Ninth Circuit Court explained in Hill v. Scottsdale Unified Sch. Dist., 2003, “the
desirable approach is not for schools to throw up their hands because of the possible misconceptions about endorsement of religion,” but “The school’s proper response is to educate the audience rather than squelch the speaker. Schools may explain that they do not endorse speech by permitting it.” But Bremerton School District has chosen instead to squelch speech. The Patriot’s so-called compromise does as well. Stan Mansfield, Bremerton.

Possible homicide in Bremerton Bremerton police investigate death of 87-year-old
BREMERTON — An 87-year-old man was found deceased at his Lebo Boulevard townhouse Nov. 7. The Bremerton Police Department is treating the incident as a likely homicide. Police identified the victim as Floyd Zumwalt. At 4:44 p.m. that day, Bremerton Police officers were called to a townhouse at the 100 block of Lebo Boulevard in East Bremerton after a neighbor reported that he had found Zumwalt on the floor. BPD stated there were “clear indications of foul play and violence.” “It is important for the neighborhood to know that our preliminary information indicates that this is likely not a random event,” said Bremerton Police Chief Steve Strachan. There are no persons in custody for the homicide, police

COURT REPORT • A 21-year-old Silverdale woman was charged with DUI after she crashed her 2007 Honda Civic while driving in the rain on State Route 3 just before midnight Nov. 7. The Honda came to a stop upside-down, but the woman had been wearing a seatbelt and had only light injuries. A passing motorist stopped to see if she was OK and the woman asked him to help roll the car back onto its wheels. She then fled the scene, but was shortly arrested by a Washington State Patrol trooper. The woman was upset and said she was “f--ked” and that her career and education were over. • A 23-year-old Bremerton man was charged with DUI. A Kitsap County deputy saw the man driving on Sylvan Way in Bremerton around midnight with no headlights and pulled him over. According to the KCSO report, the man smelled like alcohol but told deputies he did not have anything to drink. He then failed a field sobriety test. The man, who was white, was arrested and
then allegedly called deputy a “pig,” sang obscene songs and asked if they were going to shoot him “like a black man.” Bail was set at $10,000. • A 40-year-old Hansville man was charged with DUI after he allegedly crashed his Mazda into a power pole at the intersection of Silverdale Way and Ridgetop Boulevard around 2 a.m. on Nov. 8. The car came to rest in the parking lot of a nearby Panera Bread restaurant. A KCSO deputy asked the man about the power pole and the man, using slurred and repetitive speech, told the deputy he did not know what happened to the power pole, and that if he had hit the pole he would have admitted to doing so. • Kyle David James, 27, of Silverdale, was charged with communication with a minor for immoral purposes, a felony. James, a registered sex offender, allegedly sent inappropriate messages to a juvenile. • Richard Paul McIntyre, 40, of Bremerton, was charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

Risky carrier landings and the hidden stories of veterans recruiting film in the University of Missouri’s student union showing F-4 Phantoms landing on an aircraft carrier. Two young Navy pilots showed the promotional clip from a tabletop projector. Imagine: a projector! Dad was a senior majoring in engineering, and he had just returned from a job interview with U.S. Steel in Gary, Indiana. Dad had never seen the ocean, and he had certainly had never flown over it, and that made what the F-4 Phantoms were doing on the video seem much more exciting than working in a steel mill.
Lindell joined the Navy in 1971. No, not my son Lindell, but my dad, also named Lindell, which makes writing that first sentence really weird. Growing up, I thought everyone went to an aircraft carrier when they picked up their dad at work. Nothing about my dad seemed unusual to me. Now, however, as he is about to close the door on a 32-year active-duty military career and more than a decade helping to build America’s next aircraft carrier, it all seems pretty spectacular. But you’d never know it. So, back to 1971. Dad saw a
KEYPORT
So he signed up. He flew the A-4 Skyhawk first, then the F-4 Phantom. Eventually, however, he transitioned to the F-14 Tomcat program and attended the Navy’s Topgun school. Yes, like the movie. Somewhere in there, he earned the nickname “Yank.” I learned most of that from Google. Dad doesn’t talk much about his career. Many veterans do not. Occasionally someone on Facebook will send me pictures of my dad in the F-14. My boys view these with awe and a historical eye, because

the Navy no longer operates F-14s. Also, they can’t imagine their Pop, the man who drives exactly the speed limit, ever flying one. (Trust me, you don’t want to get stuck behind my dad on a two-lane highway.) The first time Dad took the boys tubing behind his speed boat, he was so cautious and slow, the tube didn’t get enough speed to plane. And I was trying to tell my kids that this is the man who used to break the sound barrier? Nonsense. Sometimes people share stories with me like this one: In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the aircraft carrier’s optical landing system, the lights that signal a pilot if he’s too high or low to land on the aircraft carrier’s relatively short deck, went out. There was nothing to guide Dad, and his aircraft was low on fuel. No one thought they’d make it, but then Dad landed the plane without incident in the total blackness. Sounds like something out of a movie, no? I tell these stories to my sons, and none of it computes. They know my dad as the guy who still drives a pickup truck, eats bologna sandwiches for lunch and once put
Navy Wise
Sarah Smiley his grandsons’ Transformer mask on his head while he was taking out the trash. The only connection to Dad’s past is when he comes into a room and jokingly tells his grandsons, “No need to salute, men. I’ll be in the area all day.” Dad’s namesake especially likes that one. Sometimes, people retire from the military and have a hard time letting go of their rank. No one is worried about that with Dad. He will embrace the ordinary just as much as he tried to maintain it during his military career. Many veterans do. They slip back into “regular” life, where their military history seems absolutely foreign to the rest of the world. While we watch blockbuster Hollywood movies of action and adventure,
these men and women lived it. It’s part of their lives, and then, suddenly, it’s part of their past. I tease my dad that someday he will be in a retirement home asking for bologna sandwiches, and no one will believe that he once flew jets and commanded a carrier. Unless they ask, which I hope they do. Our country is filled with veterans like my dad who may seem ordinary, but they have extraordinary stories to tell. We thank them one day a year, and then we impatiently honk at their slowness on all the other days. I especially think about this when the boys and I go to retirement homes to have dinner with the residents. Many of them served in our country’s wars, and there they sit, a virtual treasure-chest of history and stories that rival anything Hollywood could make up. So this week, as we celebrate veterans and what they do, don’t just stop at thanking a veteran. Go one step further and ask him or her for some stories. And if you get stuck behind my dad on a two-lane highway going exactly the speed limit, wave, don’t honk.
Area Navy bases boosting energy efficiency KITSAP — One of Naval Facilities Engineering Command Northwest missions is to ensure that naval installations in the Puget Sound region become more energy efficient and sustainable while maintaining or improving working conditions for employees. At Naval Base Kitsap, an energy competition that challenged tenant occupants in certain buildings to reduce their energy consumption is wrapping up. The competition has heightened tenants’ awareness of energy and produced documented energy savings. Also, NBK replaced its 2,300-volt high-intensity discharge street-light fixtures with light-emitting diode fixtures that use 480 volts. The Navy is also working to improve the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system
in Building 850 in Bremerton. The upgrade will optimize the way conditioned air is distributed throughout the building and improve employee comfort. On Naval Magazine Indian Island, a design for a water source heat pump is 90 percent complete. This project will use the water of Puget Sound as a renewable heat source for the waterfront operations building. The projects allow the bases to meet and exceed the Department of the Navy Energy goals. Each naval installation has exceeded the required 30 percent reduction by 2015 some installations have reduced energy consumption by 34 to 40 percent. Saving energy conserves resources and helps the Navy to become independent of fossil fuels.

Rotarians donate $2,000 to homeless On Oct. 29 Rotarian Elayne Burton presented Leanna Weaver, executive director of Georgia Mattson Memorial Shelter, with a “Duck Bucks” check for over $2,000. The Duck Bucks were used to replace the shelter’s gas furnace which was beyond repair and a safety hazard to operate. With winter temperatures arriving soon, time was of the essence in returning
the central heating system to operation. Rotarian Scott Park volunteered his company, Quality Heating, Electrical and Air Conditioning, Inc, to quickly complete the work funded by the Duck Bucks. The Georgia Mattson Memorial Shelter (Georgia’s House) is a local nonprofit providing women and children a safe place for a second chance. Its mission is to ensure that low-income, homeless women and children up to the age of 18, as well as those experiencing domestic violence, have the opportunity to seek out ways to better themselves without concern for shelter, food and safety. Georgia’s House has twenty-two beds for women and children and has operated solely with volunteers for over three years. It is the only shelter taking children up to 18 in the area and the only one which intakes on a 24/7 schedule. Prospective residents are referred to Georgia’s House by the Kitsap County Housing Solutions Center in Bremerton. The Shelter is usually filled to capacity with residents being able to reside in Georgia’s House for up to 90 days. For more information, go to www.gmweaver foundation.org.

than two hours and traffic was diverted to side streets as responders worked at the scene. Dozens of people stood nearby to watch the rescue personnel work. The investigation into the causes of the crash is still ongoing, but the female driver of the red Kia told investigators that she “likely fell asleep” at the time of the crash, according to a press release from Bremerton Police. The driver said she has a newborn at home, causing her sleep to be chronically interrupted over the past several days. According to the press release, the Kia traveled along the sidewalk on the east side of National well before the crash occurred, and there was no indication of any attempt to correct the vehicle, which is consistent with the driver being asleep. There is no indication of alcohol or drug use involved in the incident. A barista at the Kitsap and National Starbucks, who was working that night, said he

ing past those buildings because they could not see around the corners. Density in most people’s mind was a bad thing, Gurnee said. The usual perceptions of density are that of overcrowding, heavy traffic, pollution and strained services. But Gurnee challenged the council to see density as a good thing, with great parks, walkable neighborhoods, efficient transit options and a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. Gurnee showed a photo of a dense Italian city where he had once studied. The photo showed a fairly compact city atop a hill, surrounded by farmlands. If that city had been developed with sprawl instead, he said, all that beautiful farmland would be gone. The plan ties in to the larger Kitsap County Comprehensive Plan and the Puget Sound Regional Council.
The investigation into the causes of the crash is still ongoing, but the female driver of the red Kia told investigators that she “likely fell asleep” at the time of the crash heard a sound like a “shotgun.” He said he did not recall hearing the screeching of brakes. The staff at the Vape on the Beach store were not in the building that night. They said the flipped car came within eight inches of hitting their building. Shrubs outside the building were struck, however. When the investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to the Kitsap County Prosecutor’s Office, and it will be their decision whether criminal charges would be appropriate, according to the press release. Nov. 1-8 was declared Drowsy Driving Prevention Week in Washington state.
(See also: “Future of Silverdale to be guided by revised county sub-area plan” published on our website in January, www.centralkitsapreporter.com/news/289470961.html) Gurnee may be reached via email at dgurnee@co.kitsap.wa.us. Kitsap County Commissioner Ed Wolfe, who was also at the council meeting, said “walkability and connectors, to me, (were) paramount.” Wolfe said a “bus rapid transit” system could one day use dedicated road lanes to connect Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo, Silverdale and Bremerton. “If I had a crystal ball I’d say that’s going to happen,” Wolfe said. Wolfe also noted that the old Community Center would be torn down by January or February, and that the Sheriff’s Office could be moved to a larger location. “Silverdale is the ATM of the county. Things are happening in Silverdale right now,” Wolfe said.

Tis the season
Community strives to ensure no stomach goes unfilled, no need goes unmet BY EMILY HALL ehall@soundpublishing.com

s temperatures get colder and nights grow longer, Kitsap residents are not only looking forward to holiday festivities, but also ensuring they’ve got each others’ backs. There are many in our community who could use a warm coat, a hot meal, a roof over their heads, or even just somebody to talk to as the weather turns gloomy. Here’s how people are helping.
Severe weather shelters
The Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management operates two Severe Weather Shelters for residents needing a place to stay on nights when the temperature has been below 32 degrees for four hours or more. The shelters also provide individuals who are homeless a refuge from snow and rain. Shelters are located at the Kingston Community Center on Highway 104 and the Salvation Army in Bremerton. Local businesses and media pass the word when these shelters are open, and Kitsap Transit provides free rides to the shelters for those who need one. See HELP, Page 2

Continued from page 1 Because of the efforts of volunteers, these places are safe for an overnight stay when the weather has made it too dangerous to go home, or if someone is in need of a home.
Community dinners
Around Kitsap, community service groups come together to ensure people who need a meal, or just the company of others, can get it — 100 percent complimentary, no strings attached. The First Lutheran Church of Poulsbo hosts a community dinner every Thursday from 5-6 p.m. On Thanksgiving Day at 2 p.m., the church will provide a turkey dinner, complete with salads and hams. All are welcome, and it’s an ideal alternative
to spending the holiday alone. In addition, the church has teamed up with North Kitsap Fishline and is accepting food donations and toys for the upcoming holiday season, and is also collecting warm coats and winter wear in honor of a recently passed church member. “I’m so proud of our community and Kitsap [County] as a whole,” said Beth Samuels, an administrator and volunteer coordinator with First Lutheran Church. (See the list of other community dinners on page 6.)
Food banks
At Fishline’s Food Bank (Viking Avenue and Liberty Road in Poulsbo), clients receive “Fish Bucks” which they use to shop for food for during the holidays and

the rest of the year. Fishline assists 400-500 families during the holidays. Another Fishline program offers residents the opportunity to sponsor a child or a family during Christmas. In the “Christmas Child Program,” children from low-income families can list their holiday gift wishes on a tag that is placed on Christmas trees all over Poulsbo and North Kitsap. Sponsors choose a card and shop for whatever is on the list. Debbie’s family faced a crisis toward the end of 2014. Her husband, Mark, suffered a cardiac arrest, resulting in three openheart surgeries in a single month. Consequently, she had to look after him as well as their three children. Neither Debbie nor Mark were able to work, making it that much harder to pay their bills and living expenses. For Debbie’s family, things took a turn for the worse. After Thanksgiving, the family car was burglarized and Debbie had to tap into her savings to cover the repair costs. Debbie reached out to Fishline, where she explained her situation. Fishline helped Debbie acquire gifts for her family as well as a holiday food basket. “We can totally help you,” she was told, as Fishline gave Debbie’s family the hand up they needed. Others followed. Debbie’s coworkers whipped up a delicious Thanksgiving turkey dinner for her family, and Mark’s colleagues initiated a drive at Coast Do It Best Hardware to help the family get back on their feet. Gravitec stepped in and took help to the next level. After hearing about Debbie’s family’s situation, the company took Debbie shopping, where she was able to buy See HELP, Page 6

Nine selections for your Thanksgiving table NW WINES T hanksgiving can seem like a daunting meal with which to pair wines, and that’s a valid concern for many reasons: There are many contradictory flavors on the table, and the focus does not tend to be wine but rather on the food and the company. The problem is easily solved by opening a handful of wines (depending on the number of guests) that are balanced and food-friendly. For example, if you have 10 people coming to dinner, open at least five or six bottles — chances are, everyone at the table will find something they like. Here are nine wines from around the Pacific Northwest that will work beautifully with your Thanksgiving dinner. All won gold medals at last month’s Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition. Ask for them at your favorite wine shop or contact the wineries. n Westport Winery NV Rapture of the Deep, Washington, $28: Using cranberries from the Washington

coast, the Roberts family once again has crafted a delicious bubbly that is perfect for the Thanksgiving table. Aromas and flavors of — what else? — cranberries are bright and approachable. Available only at the winery. (13 percent alcohol) n Airfield Estates Winery 2014 Chardonnay, Yakima Valley, $15: Tropical aromas of pineapple, citrus and green apple lead to flavors of lemon-lime, tart Golden Delicious apples and a touch of guava. (14.2 percent alcohol) n Maryhill Winery 2014 Rosé of Sangiovese, Columbia Valley, $16: Many of Washington’s best rosés are made from Sangiovese, and this is no exception. Aromas of strawberry and kiwi give way to flavors of pie cherry and ripe red berry, all backed with luscious acidi-
ty. (13.3 percent alcohol) n Palencia Winery 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, Columbia Valley, $18: Walla Walla winemaker Victor Palencia has a magic touch with Sauv Blanc, and this wine’s combination of complex flavors and crisp acidity make this a perfect Thanksgiving wine. Notes of lime, tropical fruit and minerality lead to a satisfying finish. (13 percent alcohol) n Watermill Winery 2012 Merlot, Walla Walla Valley, $24: Using estate grapes from the southern Walla Walla Valley, the Brown family is producing some of the top wines in the region. This Merlot shows off aromas and flavors of blackberry, blueberry and an earthy backbone. (14.3 percent alcohol) n Ancestry Cellars 2013 Reminiscence Riesling, Columbia Gorge, $18: This Woodinville winery uses Columbia Gorge grapes for this gorgeous Riesling. Aromas and flavors of Mandarin orange and sweet lime are backed by
notes of minerality and abundant acidity. This is a delicious sipper by itself or will pair with a wide variety of dishes. (10.4 percent alcohol) n Helix by Reininger 2011 Syrah, Columbia Valley, $28: The Helix label provides an avenue for winemaker Chuck Reininger to use grapes from the broad Columbia Valley (leaving Walla Walla Valley grapes for his Reininger label). This beautiful Syrah leads off with lush blackberry fruit, followed by a parade of plum and blueberry flavors that lead to a satisfying finish. (14.3 percent alcohol) n St. Innocent Winery 2013 Zenith Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills, $42: Longtime Oregon winemaker Mark Vlossak established St. Innocent in the 1980s and continues to make some of the most elegant and graceful Pinot Noirs in the Northwest. This example reveals aromas and flavors of red cherry, spice and lavender notes, all backed with zesty acidity and restrained tannins. (13

Turkeys are native to the Americas KITSAP BIRDING O By GENE BULLOCK
n Thanksgiving, the turkey is the special bird of the day. But wild turkey flocks
get a lot of attention any time of the year. They’re one of our biggest birds, and a strutting tom is an
impressive sight with his fanned peacock tail, distinctive wattle and bright colors.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2015 My most memorable turkey encounter occurred in a place called Turkey Creek Canyon on the rim of the Gila Wilderness in Arizona. I was on a 1980 Sierra Club backpack. A hot, dry hike brought us to a saddle forested with Ponderosa pines. It offered cooling relief from the sun plus sweeping views of the surrounding desert. I gratefully shed my sweaty pack and seated myself on the soft forest duff with my back against a rock and fell asleep. When I awoke I was surrounded by turkeys. Some were almost within reach. I sat still as stump while they continued grazing all around me. Turkeys are native to the Americas. Turkey fossils have been unearthed across the southern U.S. and Mexico dating
back five million years. Their numbers dwindled through the early 20th century because of their popularity on the dinner table. But turkeys have been reintroduced in every state except Alaska. Turkeys were domesticated for food by Native peoples before the Spanish conquistadors arrived. They were reported in the Yucatan by Francisco de Cordoba’s men in 1517, and by Cortez in 1519. According to Sam Passamonte of Poulsbo, his ancestor, Miquiel de Passamonte, is credited by some historians with introducing the turkey into Spain as early as 1511, but it’s not clear it was the same bird. Europeans originally thought America was part of the See BIRDING, Page 9

Birding
Continued from page 8 West Indies, so the French word for turkey is “coq d’Inde.” In 16th Century England, many exotic foods were imported by eastern Mediterranean merchants. They were referred to as “turkey goods,” because trade routes crossed through Turkey, and the name came to represent an unfamiliar, far-off place. Any big, edible fowl that was not familiar to them became a “turkey bird.” In England, turkey became so popular it replaced chicken at many dinner tables. Shakespeare mentioned the turkey in “Twelfth Night,” written around 1601, so it was already familiar to his audiences. The English brought the name to the New World, and it became a fixture in the language. Ben Franklin once suggested naming the American turkey our
national bird. He argued that the American eagle is a scavenger and less deserving of recognition. But the eagle was a long-established symbol of power and appears in many crests. Many considered turkeys stupid, in spite of their uncanny ability to outwit hunters. But the bias gave rise to the use of “turkey” to refer to a person who lacks good sense or judgement. It’s doubtful that

our celebrated “first Thanksgiving dinner” bore any resemblance to today’s holiday dinner fare, but the turkey has always had a special place in American history and holiday tradition. — Gene Bullock is newsletter editor for Kitsap Audubon. Contact him at genebullock@comcast.net.
