Father sentenced to 20 years for injecting son with heroin ANDY NYSTROM anystrom@redmond-reporter.com

Eric E. Lehtinen was sentenced to 20 years in prison Nov. 13 for attempting to kill his 4-year-old son in September 2013 by injecting him with heroin. The Redmond resident pleaded guilty to the offense of first-degree attempted murder in August 2015. Judge Mary Roberts sentenced Lehtinen,

now 39, at the King County Courthouse in Seattle. The case was handled by Senior Deputy Prosecutor Don Raz and Deputy Prosecutor Ben Gauen. Lehtinen’s son, now 6, was released from Seattle Children’s Hospital in October 2013. “I have nothing but to live with the consequences of what happened that night,” Lehtinen told the judge via a Kiro7.

com live stream. He noted that it’s extremely painful thinking about the incident and he regrets causing pain to his son, ex-wife and family. “I didn’t want to hurt anybody,” he said. “In my state of mind, from what I remember that night, is extreme terror. I was in a very twisted state, very delusional. I’m sorry.” Lehtinen said he takes full responsibility for his actions and apologized to his son,

ex-wife and family. He also apologized to the court and state for having to deal with such a “horrible thing.” Lehtinen, who was reported to have mental health issues, said he was a good father up until the incident and added that while he was in jail he wanted to be with his son. Lehtinen’s ex-wife also spoke at the sentencing and said that [ more LEHTINEN page 7 ]

Election results to be certified on Tuesday

The most recent King County Elections results — before the Reporter’s deadline — were released for this month’s general election at 3:48 p.m. Wednesday and Redmond incumbent John Marchione continues to hold the lead in the city’s mayoral race. Marchione holds 54.00 percent (5,381) of the votes and challenger Steve Fields holds 45.76 percent (4,560) of the votes. So far, 10,743 ballots have been counted. There are 28,164 registered voters in Redmond, putting current voter turnout at 38.14 percent. On the Redmond City Council ballot, four candidates are running unopposed: Hank Myers (Position 1) — 98.44 percent (6,574 votes); Hank Margeson (Position 3) — 98.38 percent (6,484 votes); Angela Birney (Position 5) — 98.86 percent (6,571 votes); and David Carson (Position 7) — 98.53 percent (6,435 votes). Results will be certified on Tuesday.

While the Bahamas may bring to mind images of islands with pristine beaches and a feeling of relaxation for many people, for Leona Coakley-Spring that is just half of the picture. For the Bahamian-born Redmond resident, the picture of her homeland also includes images of the poor and homeless — two things she experienced firsthand at one point of her island life. “I grew up poor,” she said. “I mean, dirt poor.” The picture also includes people living with HIV and AIDS, and for 18 years, it has been Coakley-Spring’s mission to do what

she can to help those with the disease. As someone with a performance background, she has put on concerts featuring herself as well as various members of her musical family and recorded and sold CDs; she has also sold Bahamian baked goods at local farmers’ markets as well as some of her paintings — all with proceeds going toward the All Saints AIDS Shelter in Nassau, Bahamas. Coakley-Spring said the shelter houses up to about 120 people, and currently, there are about 40 children and 60 adults living there. She said some of the residents are HIV positive, while others have full-blown AIDS. There are also situations in which [ more RICHES page 7 ]

Lake Washington School District (LWSD) Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce proudly displayed the button she and others were wearing, emblazoned with the district motto: “Growing together, serving our community.” About an hour earlier on Wednesday morning, Dr. Pierce gave a state of the district address to a roomful of about 70 people, including elected officials, heads of agencies, business leaders and parent leaders, at the inaugural Community Leaders Breakfast held in the district’s Resource Center Board Room in Redmond. “We could not do our work without all of you,” Pierce told the attendees. During her address, Pierce shared LWSD’s mission and vision for its students, highlighted some of its programs — from preschool through high school and a New Teacher Support Program — and thanked the community for its support and involvement. She also read from President Obama’s proclamation to celebrate American Education Week, which focused on communities recommitting to helping schools be the best they can be and helping students achieve their dreams. Pierce noted that she believes if the district stays true to its four core values and five strategic goals, then LWSD will be on the road to completing its mission and vision. The core values are being student centered, learning focused, community connected and recruiting oriented; the strategic goals are ensuring academic success for every student; providing safe and innovative learning environments; recruiting, hiring and retaining highly effective personnel; using resources effectively and being fiscally responsible; and engaging its communities. “I’m most proud of the fact that we have such a great community who cares

about public education,” Pierce said. “Everyone’s willing to work together, whether you’re from the city or from business or community to help our schools be great. I’m just proud to be a part of that.” Here’s some of LWSD’s student successes that Pierce highlighted at the event: • The district’s graduation rate has risen over the past three years from 89 percent to 92 percent. The state average is 77 percent. • Ninety-two percent of seniors graduated on time last spring, and half of the students who did not graduate on time are still enrolled and working to complete their high school diploma. The target is 100 percent graduation by 2018. • Currently, 81 percent of students enter a two- or four-year college directly after high school compared to 62 percent statewide. The target is 88 percent post-secondary enrollment by 2018. • Eighty-nine percent of students earn college credit while still in high school. • LWSD students outperform state and national averages on tests. Average SAT critical reading scores in the district rose by 11 points over last year. Reading scores across the state of Washington fell by eight points, and nationally, reading scores decreased by two points. • SAT writing scores rose by 11 points; state scores fell by seven and national scores fell by three. • SAT math scores were the highest they have been in the past four years. They rose nine points over last year, while state scores fell eight points and national scores fell by two points. • Students in grades 3-8 performed 23–27 percent higher than the state average on the new state assessments. Another highlight of the event was a Skype session with Lake Washington High School astronomy teacher Ryan Palmer and his students. LWSD communications director Kathryn Reith

noted that Palmer and one of his students spoke about having one-to-one laptops and communicating through a learning management system called haiku. Pierce added that LWSD received awards for reducing waste and saving energy and dollars; got clean results from audits; and saved taxpayers money through bond refinancing. Pierce also spoke about the district’s enrollment growth, which has averaged an additional 625 students per year over the past five years. LWSD is now the fourth-largest district in the state with 27,830 students. “Our biggest challenge right now is really connected to our second goal to provide safe and innovative learning environments, in that based on our growth and our need to address the aging facilities, we just don’t have enough classroom space for students,” Pierce said. She said by the end of next year, LWSD will have 168 portables across the district and the district grew 1,114 students in the last year. To solve the growth challenge, they convened the Long-Term Facilities Planning Task Force last year. From December 2014 until November 2015, the group engaged with the community, did analysis and research. They recommended that the district needs to build more schools, and Pierce said LWSD will be taking the next steps in 2016 toward making that happen. “I’m proud of where we are and where we’re headed,” Pierce said. “There’s always work to do. We don’t rest on our laurels. We’re always trying to see how we can improve and do things better.” On the teacher front regarding student growth, Pierce added: “As we grow, we’re going to need more teachers, just like everyone else across the state. So that challenge of how do we set ourselves apart as a place where people will want to come and work, that’s something we’re focusing on.”

The arts feed our minds and our hearts Why is the development of a vibrant arts and culture sector such an important element in the progress of the Eastside? It’s a fair question. After all, if you’re willing to sit in traffic, pay a toll and spring for a $20 parking tab, there’s plenty to do in Seattle. But there are 600,000 people who live and work on the sunrise side of the lake and they can’t borrow their cultural life from Seattle forever. About 10 years ago, I came across a book titled “The Rise of the Creative Class” by Dr. Richard Florida, the Heinz Professor of Regional Economic Development at Carnegie Mellon University. His research focused on “identifying the factors that make certain cities and regions grow and prosper and others lag behind.” He began by examining the conventional wisdom that the key to economic growth lies in attracting and retaining companies, because companies create jobs and people will “go where the jobs are.” But his research showed that the creative sector now accounts for 50 percent of all U.S. economic activity and that innovative companies are being formed almost exclusively in regions that are themselves attractive to creative workers. There are more than 40 million people today who are paid to be creative — designers, engineers, artists, writers, programmers and so on. The emergence of creative workers as an economic force has been so powerful that they now constitute John Haynes

an entirely new economic class. These people don’t work 9 to 5; they think 24/7. Access to this critical mass of creative thinkers is what drives economic growth. They can best be characterized as a “mosaic society” — open minded, mobile, tolerant and diverse, with non-negotiable arts, entertainment, food and cultural needs. These factors work to enhance a community’s ability to mobilize the resources necessary to support innovative enterprises, including everything from venture capital to nightlife. As executive director of a large performing arts center project, I spend much of my time fundraising for its $160 million construction budget. Frequently a prospective donor — someone with financial capacity and a community leadership profile — will tell me that they’re “just not into the arts.” This response is usually accompanied by the explanation that their interest and passion are bound up in sports, education, health care or other worthy agendas. I have come to realize

that what they mean by “the arts” is very different than what I mean. They may not care for ballet or opera, but I’ll bet that they make playlists, go to movies and decorate their homes. “The arts” is shorthand for creative human expression in all its forms. The arts feed our minds and our hearts … and they help create the kind of community that our prosperity and the futures of our kids depends on. If we care about these things, we’d better care about the arts and nurture the Eastside organizations that provide them.

John Haynes is executive director and CEO of Performing Arts Center Eastside/ Tateuchi Center, a 2,000-seat, regional project being developed in downtown Bellevue. He served previously as president of the California Center for the Arts, director of Performing Arts at the University of Notre Dame and president of the Western Alliance of Arts Administrators.

Legislation to support veteran military medics to the civilian workforce Military veterans receive some of the best

medical training and experience available when serving our country. Their sacrifices, commitment to duty and ability to get the job done in austere environments make them exceptionally well suited for working as EMTs and paramedics in our communities upon their honorable separation from the U.S. Armed Services. Experienced military medics are often required to duplicate their medical training at the most basic level to receive certification to be hired for a civilian EMS job. The Veteran Emergency Medical Technicians Support Act of 2015 (S. 453/H.R. 1818) will help veterans return to work upon their completion of military duty and reduce unemployment among veterans. In 2012, 10,000 military medics separated and entered the civilian workforce. This important legislation makes it easier and faster for veterans who served as military medics to earn certification as civilian emergency medical technicians, and serves to fill an essential public function in communities across our nation. On Dec. 2, The Overlake School will hold an event that could possibly save lives. The Redmond school, at 20301 N.E. 108th St., will hold a Nick of Time Foundation heart screening event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in its field house. And while the event is being held at Overlake, it is open to all students and young people in the community, ages 14-24. “It’s open to anyone,” said Mike Fine, athletic trainer for Overlake. He said they have been in contact with schools in the immediate area such as The Bear Creek School and Redmond High School and they have the capacity to see up to 500 people. The screenings are free, but Fine, who has been involved with Nick of Time screenings for three years, said the foundation has a suggested tax-deductible donation of $25. He said no one will be turned away if they are unable to afford

the suggested donation. However, Fine said they ask that people sign up ahead of time as some of the paperwork they must fill out requires some information regarding their medical history. For more information or to sign up, contact Jacqui Jackson at Overlake at jjackson@ overlake.org or by calling (425) 868-6191 ext. 635. People can also visit the Nick of Time website at nickoftimefoundation.org for more information. Fine said the screenings will help detect certain precursors — such as mechanical or electrical problems — that could lead to sudden cardiac arrest — a condition that strikes high school-aged students once every three days, nationwide. During the screenings, boys and girls will be separated. Members of the fire department will take students’ blood pressures and pulses and doctors will listen to their hearts. There will also be a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) test — Fine noted that the

Cardea-Screen device used in the screenings utilizes technology developed by a former Overlake parent. Fine added that there are no blood tests or needles involved and if the doctors find anything of concern, they will ask the individual to go in for an ultrasound, which will happen the same day, onsite. Screenings are reviewed onsite by cardiologists and sports physicians experienced in heart screens. In addition, the students will also go through CPR and automated external defibrillators (AED) training. Fine said the idea is that if they are present when someone goes into sudden cardiac arrest, they will know what to do. He said it is not clear what causes sudden cardiac arrest in young people, but they do see it occur in more active individuals. “It does happen to athletes, but it does happen to the average student,” Fine said. He recommends the heart screening for any active student, noting that a few years ago, a student at Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood went into sudden cardiac arrest while warming up during a PE class. Susan Messier, director of communications for Overlake, added that because the students are active and in sports, they are not typically considered “unhealthy.” Fine agreed, saying [ more NICK page 8 ]

City plants trees at Sammamish Valley Park as part of mitigation work for Esterra Park

SAMANTHA PAK spak@redmond-reporter.com

When developers began forming a plan for the old Group Health site in Redmond’s Overlake neighborhood, one of its requirements was that trees and shrubs be planted to mitigate those that were removed onsite. Between 2013 and 2014, the City of Redmond has been planting this vegetation at various sites: Perrigo Park, Perrigo Heights and behind Swedish Medical Center, in the Bear-Evans Creek corridor near the old Keller Farm. The city had about 10 acres worth of trees and understory plant mitigation work, said Redmond park planning and cultural arts manager Carolyn Hope. She said the mitigation work at Perrigo Park restored 1.7 acres with 570 trees and 5,356 shrubs; restoration at Perrigo Heights, south of Hartman Park, included 1.2 acres planted with 250 trees and 2,235 shrubs; and the Swedish site was the largest at 2.3 acres and included 774 trees and 7,183 shrubs. Hope said the city has completed the work at those three sites — a total of 5.2 acres — and there is just one more site where work is being done before they have met the 10-acre requirement. That site is Sammamish Valley Park and the future Redmond Central Connector (RCC) trail. The tree-mitigation

work at Sammamish Valley Park, a 28-acre city park at the northeast corner of Northeast 116th Street and Willows Road, began in September. Hope said the work at the park covers about 5.6 acres of property with 1,896 trees and 16,446 shrubs. “This work will be completed this winter,” she said. In addition to achieving the goals of the development agreement for the old Group Health site — now dubbed Esterra Park — in Overlake Village, a city press release states that the city and developer Capstone Partners are collaborating on this project to also achieve the goals of the Sammamish Valley Park Master Plan. “We’re happy that something’s happening at the park,” Hope said. She said this includes removing reed canarygrass, an invasive wetland plant, in areas where they are doing the mitigation work. The press release states that the work will take place “in the highest topographic areas of the site, which will allow the city to continue future wetland and stream mitigation work on the site.” The city does not currently have funding dedicated to the rest of the park development, the release continues. As previously reported, Capstone removed about 1,100 trees from the site to make way for the mixed-use development. Those previous reports state that the City of Redmond has an

Courtesy of City of Redmond ordinance requiring new developments to retain at least 35 percent of trees onsite. However, as Capstone has removed all of the trees onsite, Hope said they were required to do mitigation work at a 3-to-1 ratio. This

means they have to plant three trees offsite for every one tree that was removed from the Group Health site. She said the mitigation plan includes a threetiered reforestation planting program and includes the planting of

about 3,300 new native trees such as western red cedar, black cottonwood, red alder, vine maple, big maple and Douglas fir. “The mitigation planting program also includes the planting of thousands of shrubs

and ferns to develop a healthy understory for the replacement trees,” Hope said. “Examples of these understory plants include pacific ninebark, snowberry, salmonberry, flowering currant, and a variety of willows, wild rose, and ferns.”

there are adults who have the disease and their children do not, but the children also have to stay there to be with their parents. Recently, Coakley-Spring expanded her philanthropic work by opening From Rags to Riches, a consignment store located at 16648 Redmond Way in downtown. The store opened earlier this month and features women’s clothes and accessories for both casual and dressier occasions. Coakley-Spring said 25 percent of the proceeds will go toward the Bahamian AIDS shelter. From Rags to Riches is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Many of the more formal pieces in the store are from Coakley-Spring’s personal collection, dresses and gowns she purchased for concert performances. She said some of the outfits were only worn once or a couple times, while others have not been worn at all and still have their original tags. Coakley-Spring stressed that at her store, they are not asking for donations — although she will accept them. She said they are a business and they are selling goods customers will hopefully want to buy anyway. The 25 percent comes out of the proceeds and is just something good that comes out of her sales, she said. Coakley-Spring’s work for All Saints is through Terrylee Ministry, a non-

early on. I would also like to thank the prosecutor and other agencies who worked tirelessly together for the last two years to ensure this defendant was held accountable and brought to justice. Our thoughts and hearts are with the mother and son.” Judge Roberts noted that the mother’s quick 9-1-1 call was crucial and the judge commended the first

responders for helping save the boy’s life. According to an earlier report, Redmond police and fire personnel responded to a house in the 14100 block of Northeast 72nd Street at 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 24, 2013 after receiving a 911 call from the boy’s mother, who had come home to find her husband and their son breathing but unconscious. Lehtinen’s wife came

profit organization she and her husband formed in 2001. She said she has been raising money and sending it to the shelter since she first learned about it in 1999 and forming a nonprofit just makes it easier and cuts through much of the paperwork and red tape. Coakley-Spring learned about the AIDS shelter when she went home for a visit in 1999. She met a local reverend — Rev. Nottage — who was working with the shelter. The shelter was only a few months old at that point and he asked Coakley-Spring to help him in spreading awareness for HIV and AIDS education throughout the country. Because Coakley-Spring’s family is well known on the islands — even having a town named after them — her support on the issue held a good amount of weight. As for Coakley-Spring’s

familiarity with HIV and AIDS at that time, she said her family more or less took in a former coworker of hers when she taught at a beauty school in Seattle. The coworker had AIDS and had essentially been shunned by his family. When she learned similar things were happening in the Bahamas and about All Saints, Coakley-Spring wanted to help. From Rags to Riches is just one more way she is working to help those in her home country, and while she had many doubters when she first let people know about her idea, Coakley-Spring had faith and knew she would not be deterred. She knew she had to at least try and when things fell into place, she took her chance. “When you grow up poor,” Coakley-Spring said, “you grab whatever falls in your lap.”

burnt spoon with residue, multiple scales, package equipment and alcohol pads. Police also found $12,620 in cash inside the home, according to documents. Lehtinen and his wife had been married for nearly six years and were in the process of getting a divorce — which documents state was finalized the day Lehtinen and his son were found unconscious in his home. According to documents, Lehtinen had recently

requested his wife delay the finalization of their divorce. His wife said Lehtinen had been a heroin and ketamine user in the past but had told her he had stopped. Due to his past, Lehtinen’s wife insisted that part of the divorce and child custody visitation agreement was that he submit to drug testing to ensure their son’s safety, documents state.

However, the mother noted that her ex-husband broke the bond of father and son and a life he had with both parents together. According to court documents, seven syringes containing a liquid believed to be illegal drugs were found in the room where Lehtinen and his son were discovered. Three used syringes were also located in the bedroom. Other drug-related evidence found included a

[8] November 20, 2015 that sometimes in these programs, there are some class sessions before or after the trip and sometimes they involve a paper, project or presentation after the students return stateside. Stephens noted that these types of programs run about $2,000, which is a good value because it includes travel and the college credits. However, she realizes that not everyone can afford this, so she said another option is alternative spring break programs. These types of programs usually run a few hundred dollars to $1,000 and often include some sort of volunteer or service project.

LIFE EXPERIENCE COUNTS

The final tip Stephens shared with the Reporter was geared more toward adult learners. She encouraged those returning to school to put together a prior learning portfolio, which documents what they have learned from their work and life experiences and how that equates to classes and credits. Stephens said students can typically earn between 15 and 18 credits. And for all students, Stephens encourages them to look into their prospective school’s transfer credit policy as that will tell them what the school will accept from outside sources.

For Stephens, publishing a book was never really something she had in mind to do. She said she always wanted to be an occupational therapist and was studying this in graduate school at the University of Washington right before she began writing her book. Eventually, Stephens, who has a genetic disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome that affects her ligaments, realized occupational therapy was too physically intensive for her body to handle and she left school. “It was hard,” she admits, adding that leaving school was her hardest “break up.”

But after that, Stephens began working on “College, Quicker.” The book took a long time to get published as the editing process was much more involved than she had realized. The book is available in Barnes and Noble and there are 15 copies circulating in the King County Library System. Stephens, an avid library patron, admitted that seeing her book on a library shelf was more thrilling than seeing it at the bookstore. “It was amazing,” she said about having a book published, adding that this experience has opened her to other avenues of writing.

Remove the bacon onto a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Spoon off the excess bacon grease, leaving about a tablespoon in the pan. Add chopped garlic, onions and red pepper flakes into the pan. Saute for a few seconds and add in the broccoli. Toss to combine. Sprinkle salt and pepper. Roast the broccoli on high for about 6-8 minutes until broccoli is tender and the edges are slightly singed. Pour lemon juice and fried bacon on it. Toss together and serve. You may sprinkle some mozzarella on top of it and broil it on high for just a few minutes. Serve hot. Enjoy!

Cook for three minutes, till they are a little soft, yet crunchy. Add the whole baby onions and green pepper. Turn the heat to high for just two minutes, to let the onions brown a bit. Return the heat to medium now. Sprinkle the powders and a few teaspoons of water. This prevents the dhals from charring. Cook uncovered for four minutes. Don’t let the vegetables cook all the way through. Turn it off while they are crunchy. Garnish it with cilantro before it is served.

Fleetzen, McLendon Hardware team up for Christmas tree program Redmond’s Fleetzen, the same-day delivery service for oversized items, and McLendon Hardware are teaming up to reduce some of the hassle and expense of the Christmas holiday. Anyone in the greater Seattle/Tacoma area will be able to buy a sheared 6-8-foot Douglas Christmas tree at any of

seven McLendon locations for under $50, including same-day delivery, if purchased by 5 p.m. Trees purchased after that time will be delivered the next day. Deliveries are good for a 10-mile radius. According to McLendon President Gail McLendon: “We sell thousands and thousands of top-quality

locally cut, fresh trees every year at very attractive prices. It’s our way of saying ‘Merry Christmas’ and thank you to all our loyal customers. With our same-day delivery partnership with Fleetzen, we’re taking some of the hassle out of the Christmas rush and making it incredibly easy for everyone to get

their tree from our store to their door.” The holiday promotion is a continuation of family owned McLendon’s ongoing partnership with Fleetzen, a new company started by two former Microsoft executives. Same-day delivery of oversized items is shaping up to be an important focal point in the battle

between online and offline retailers. Fleetzen’s research of more than 500 U.S. shoppers shows that four out of five are more likely to buy an oversized item if same-day delivery is provided. A video tutorial of the service can be viewed at www.fleetzen. com. Fleetzen is currently available in the greater

The City of Redmond announced that it is joining the cities of Seattle, Tacoma and Everett in moving to the lowest stage of their Water Shortage Response Plans, the advisory stage, saying conditions no longer warrant being in the “voluntary” stage in which customers were asked to reduce water use by 10 percent. Cascade and its members — Redmond, Kirkland, Issaquah, Bellevue, Tukwila and the Sammamish Pla-

teau and Skyway water and sewer districts — get their drinking water from the Seattle water supply. Cities of Seattle, Everett and Tacoma reported that rains have improved the region’s water supply, and they are cautiously optimistic about water supply conditions. The advisory stage means that a potential water supply problem may exist. This is still the case due to an ongoing strong El Nino that is expected to bring warm weather through the spring. While in the advisory stage, the city asks customers to continue to use water wisely by

Redmond High duo signs with UW to play baseball, softball ANDY NYSTROM anystrom@redmond-reporter.com

It was all about the University of Washington purple and gold on Tuesday afternoon in the Redmond High School (RHS) Career Center. With a pair of bats leaning against a table, a baseball and softball on top, UW-colored balloons floating in the air and family, friends and coaches present, Mustang seniors Brendan Ecklebarger and Kaija Gibson signed on to play for the Huskies. (The players officially signed their letters of intent on Veterans Day, Nov. 11 — a nonschool day — but they did it again for the school event.) “It’s unbelievable. I’ve been waiting to sign a piece of paper for three years now,” said Gibson, who caught the eyes of UW coaches earlier in her career. “I’ve met the girls I’m gonna go play with. I have known some of the girls that are already on the team for a long time now, and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s such a family atmosphere — the coaches are great.” Gibson, who hit a key home run in RHS’s 4A Kingco championship victory in 2014, said she enjoys competing on the softball field and notching solid grades in the classroom. RHS has prepared her well for UW in both realms, she said. Bonding with the girls on the softball diamond is key for Gibson.

Redmond High’s Brendan Ecklebarger and Kaija Gibson flash the University of Washington sign Tuesday at a baseball and softball signing event. ANDY NYSTROM, Redmond Reporter “I love the girls. That’s probably my favorite part of the high school season because everybody’s so excited to play games all the time. Everybody wants to win every single game and I think that’s really cool,” said Gibson, a shortstop, whose Mustang teams made it to state the last two seasons.

As for Ecklebarger, who signed his initial UW letter while vacationing in Hawaii, the Husky program has been on his radar since its coaches scouted him the summer before his sophomore year at RHS. “I’ve always lived around UW fans. UW has just always been an amazing place every time you drive by it,”

he said, noting that the new Husky ballpark is first-rate. “As soon as I saw that, I knew I had to be a Husky.” A trip to a RHS varsity baseball game before he attended the school gave Ecklebarger a boost, as well. The game featured current New York Met and World Series participant Michael Conforto and Dylan Davis,

both Mustang teammates then and later Oregon State teammates. “The first high school baseball game I ever watched, Davis pitched and Conforto hit two home runs, and that was the coolest experience of my life. It made me wanna be a Mustang,” said the lefthanded pitcher, who racked

up myriad wins and key hits for the Mustangs the last few years. Along with playing baseball with his buddies at RHS, Ecklebarger noted that another highlight has been playing for coach Dan Pudwill, who has taught the Mustangs to be mentally tough each time they step onto the field.
