o one is more surprised about the new Marine of the Year than the man who took the honors, Sgt. and his wife have four boys.
“It’s definitely unreal,” he said. “I’m like, wow, I didn’t think anybody noticed. I was just doing my job and making sure it got done right.”
He loves his job and would like to stay in the Marines for his entire career. But he’s reached the ceiling of how long he can stay in his job without a promotion, and there may not be a slot open when he needs it.
His bosses noticed. “He’s got the best work ethic I’ve seen, especially in a young sergeant,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. Ken Owens. Rodriguez puts in long hours and takes on tasks outside of his regular duties. He’s a skillful teacher and a Marine with impeccable integrity, Owens said. Rodriguez, originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, decided he wanted to join the military after Sept. 11. He was a senior in high school, and he wanted to do something for his country. He enlisted with delayed entry, but it ended up being
For that reason, he said he thinks it might have been better for a younger Marine to take the honor.

The Marines wouldn’t take him until he had surgery to remove a metal plate from his arm.
He also began dating his future wife, Ida, and soon a baby was on the way. He was working at an auto detailing shop, trying to scrape by before finally entering boot camp at age 21. Rodriguez was transferred to NAS Whidbey in 2011. He
Marine of the Year comes with some perks, including a prime parking spot at his workplace. The blue sign in front of the parking space says “SOY” -- short for Sailor of the Year. Rodriguez joked he’d like to paint it red and replace it with “MOY.” All the winners receive gift certificates from local businesses, which the family appreciates with four boys to buy Christmas gifts for. He was also presented with a model of a Prowler and pins for his boys, who were
proud of their father and excited to wear them, said Ida Rodriguez. Rodriguez was honored along with Logistic Specialist 1st Class Rosmond L. Shaw, Sea Sailor of the Year, and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Wayne Papalski, Shore Sailor of the Year. The Oak Harbor Navy League and Rotary Club hosted an award luncheon at the Officers’ Club in December. A panel of five master chiefs reviewed submissions from individual commands at NAS Whidbey Island, grading them separately before gathering to review them for a decision. A 100-point system was used to evaluate the nominees and it was close, said Master Chief Patrick McCullough, who served on the panel. “If we could give it to every one of them, we definitely would have because that’s just how tight the competition was.”

“He calls me Shirley. It’s just Sheila,” said Sheila Ryan. “He gives me a hard time.” Friends and family have come to expect the unexpected from Lasell, who has maintained his wit and sense of humor while reaching an age associated with longevity.
“Pinch his right ear,” Lasell says to his housekeeper, who accomodates the request but accidently grabs the wrong one.
Lasell gets away with plenty from the wooden rocking chair in his Oak Harbor home these days. It’s part of the license he’s earned for living to be a century old.
Lasell, a retired Naval officer and World War II veteran, celebrated his 100th birthday in December on two occasions. The first was a gathering in his honor at the Officers Club at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in which local magician JR Russell played a slideshow of Lasell’s life and asked him questions.
Reach out to shake Lasell’s hand and you’re bound to grip an “energy stick” instead. The device, which lights up when
“I asked him, ‘Harvey, everyone wants to know, what is the secret to living to 100?’” Russell said.
“His right ear!” Lasell barks out. “Shirley, where did you go to school?”
“He said, ‘Don’t die.’” Lasell’s daughter, Joyce Kuhn, has her own theories. She said her dad has always been a proud and determined man, physically fit, independent and strong-willed, but admits good genes have likely played a role. Harvey Lasell was born Dec. 20, 1915 in Williamstown, Vt., grew up on a farm, became a keen shot and developed a love of horses at an early age. He later followed a family tradition by graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy and served 21 years in the Navy, including time aboard the USS Yorktown during the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway in 1942. His skills as a marksman earned him the Secretary of the Navy’s pistol trophy.

I’d say that the man is all Navy,” said Lesley Robbins, his longtime friend and neighbor. “The Navy has been his life.” After retiring from the Navy, Lasell spent a second career with Boeing and has lived on a small farm setting in Oak Harbor since 1982. He lost Betty, his wife of 54 years, in 1994. They had four children, three of whom are still living. Joyce Kuhn and her husband live next door to her
father to help keep an eye on him in his later years. Kuhn said she continues to be amazed by her dad, who doesn’t wear glasses except for reading, and owns hearing aids but never wears them. “He’s quite a storyteller,” Kuhn said. “He loves to tell stories. Horses are very important to him. They still are. He doesn’t have any now. He’s fearless about horses. Many times I just about died a thousand deaths because he was out there doing something he

Two of city’s female WWII vets pass away By DEBRA VAUGHN
At age 23, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and went to bootcamp and Officer Candidate School. She served four years, including as the commanding officer of a squadron in India responsible for the movement of troops and supplies.
Oak Harbor lost two of the few remaining female World War II veterans in the area this fall. Eva Brown, 93, died in October, and her friend and fellow veteran Patricia Ricketts, 96, followed her a month later. Eva Marie Murdock was born Oct. 13, 1922, in Maynard, Ark. Her parents were tenant farmers, and the family barely scraped by during the Great Depression. She first spotted the man she would marry, Raymond Brown, at her high school graduation. He was standing at the back of the room, handsome in his U.S. Army uniform. She enlisted at age 21 in the Navy WAVES -- Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. In an interview with the Whidbey News-Times last year, she said she joined
Eva Brown was in the Navy WAVES. because all the men around her, including her brother, were enlisting. She wanted to serve her country, too. “The purpose of our being accepted in the military was so we could replace the men at the desk so they could go to sea duty,” she said. “Some of them were happy to be released from working at a desk. Of course, there were some that resented us.”

Patricia Ricketts enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.
The majority were grateful for women joining the ranks and her experience was a good one, Brown said. She worked as a hospital apprentice 1st class. After two years of service, she used the G.I. Bill to finish her degree. She married Raymond and went on to teach elementary school for the next 35 years in Arkansas and Illinois.
Brown followed her only son, Jim Brown, to Oak Harbor in 1986 to be closer to family. She continued to take an active role in the community and the Oak Harbor Church of Christ. She served as a volunteer for multiple organizations, including for Whidbey General Hospital’s hospice program and the Senior Center.

Patricia Collier was born Oct. 16, 1919, the daughter of Robert Collier, an author best known for his self-help book, “The Secret of the Ages.” She was one of six siblings and for life remained close to her identical twin sister, Dorothea.
She served as a leader in the military long before such a thing was even a thought for most women. Then she went onto accomplish much more in her life: she served as a secretary to high-ranking officials at Pan American Airways and became a firsthand witness to the Great Space Race to put American astronauts on the moon. She raised four children as a single mother and was an athlete into her 80s.

Over time, Lasell loosened up a little about the subject. With “Shirley” to tease and others to target for personal amusement, there isn’t much time to take life too seriously. Nonprofit accepts uniforms for JERRY reuse SMITH CH By DEBRA VAUGHN

can cost $150 new, Oram said.
Chief Scott Oram recently started a chapter of Sea Cadets in Oak Harbor, and the program is going well.
It’s a security risk if someone impersonates a sailor. It’s also a matter of pride. It irks many in the service to see the uniform not cared for well.
One snag — finding affordable Navy uniforms to outfit the kids involved.
“People don’t like seeing homeless people wandering in them around town, he said.
Kristiina Miller, founder of The Garage of Blessings, has stepped up with a solution.
For those reasons, The Garage of Blessings has never given uniforms out to the public. This arrangement allows the nonprofit to get uniforms into good hands.
The Oak Harbor nonprofit is accepting used uniforms and donating them to the Sea Cadets. “It saves me a ton of money, Oram said. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps was founded in 1958 by the Navy League and later chartered by Congress. The program introduces youth to skills and experiences of the sea-going services such as sailing and seamanship. The Oak Harbor chapter is focused more on naval aviation.

The Garage of Blessings effort also cuts down on another problem with donated military uniforms -- having them appropriated by civilians.
Oram swings by every few weeks to pick up bags full of uniforms, physical training clothing, shoes, sea bags, belts, ties and the like. And Miller also throws in shoe polish. “We throw that in there because we thought the young cadets should learn to polish their shoes at an early age, she said. Those who want to drop off uniforms for the Sea Cadets can bring them by The Garage of Blessings, 3159 Goldie Road Unit A, Oak Harbor.
