SILVERDALE — Washington State Patrol troopers used dogs to sniff around vehicles parked at Central Kitsap Middle School following a bomb threat Dec. 17. As a precaution, Central Kitsap School District evacuated students from the middle school to Central Kitsap High School after the threat was received. “Our priority was to make sure staff and students were safe,” said David Beil with CKSD. “Law enforcement was called right away. Law enforcement is investigating.” According to a grandmother of a student who attends CKMS, it is possible that a note was found in a boys bathroom at the school sometime around 11:30 a.m. According to Deputy Scott Wilson with Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, the threat was not credible and the case was considered closed as of 4:11 p.m. Wilson said someone wrote the threat on a bathroom wall. Wilson said they did not know who wrote the message. The threat apparently included a signed name, but the name was

CKSD issued a statement online: “After a thorough investigation, law enforcement has advised us that it is safe to resume school at Central Kitsap Middle School. All classes and activities will continue as planned on Friday, Dec. 18. “In order to provide an added mea-
sure of safety, law enforcement will be present at CKMS on Friday.” Wilson said making threats like this one was a class B felony. Earlier this week, schools in New York and Las Vegas received threats. The Las Vegas school system decided to close in response.
BREMERTON — With golden shovels — and one excavator — digging ceremoniously into a big pile of dirt, construction of Olympic College’s new College Instruction Center has officially begun. “We’ve been working on this project for about seven years,” said OC President David Mitchell, “and we’re just delighted that this day is finally here.” The center will be a 70,000-squarefoot facility for the art, music, theater, physical therapy and some nursing programs, as well as some simulation labs for nursing and high-tech, active-learning classrooms on the Bremerton OC campus. Budgeted at $46.5 million, it is the largest-funded project in state community and technical college history. It will also include a 276-seat theater to provide a venue for campus and community events like the Olympic Jazz Festival and youth symphony programs. “This building really does enhance learning,” Mitchell said. “It’s not just bricks and mortar. Students love new buildings.” Mitchell described the building as a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) building. Basically, it’s got something for everyone. “It’s all about community,” said Walter Schacht, principal owner of the architectural firm partnered with OC on this project, Schacht Aslani Architects. “This building, as Dr. Mitchell says, has the arts in it, and the arts bring people together. The building also has health occupations in it, and those … programs serve the need of Kitsap and Mason counties’ growing populations.” Schacht added that the new center will be a “connection between the town and gown,” with the theater bringing community members in for performances of all kinds. SILVERDALE – Blazing Onion, a fast-casual gourmet burger joint, opened at The Trails shopping center on Dec. 20. “This is our first location in Kitsap County and we are so excited to be opening at the new Trails at Silverdale,” said David Jones, CEO of Blazing Onion, in a press statement. “For the first time ever, we will feature a top end whiskey bar, with a library of books to learn anything you desire about whiskey, bourbon and scotch.” The restaurant features 20 gourmet burgers, from meatloaf to wild boar. Each one-third pound burger is made using fresh, all natural hormone and antibiotic free, 100-percent ground chuck beef from Painted Hills. The patty is topped with signature seasonings and served on a locally-baked bun along with “endless” french fries. Chicken breast, wild game, scratchmade turkey patties, meatloaf and vegetarian patties are also available. Blazing Onion’s Whiskey Bar is filled with HD TV’s. A large patio will also be available for summer lounging. The Whiskey Bar will feature more than 200 whiskey, bourbon, and scotches priced $6 to $100. Blazing Onion was created by husband-and-wife team David and Lorri Jones. The restaurant combines counter ordering with full table service
where guests place their order at the counter and then relax at a table while their entrée is being grilled. The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the weekends. The Whiskey Bar will stay open an extra hour. Blazing Onion is located at 11199 Pacific Crest Place SW, suite D-119, in Silverdale. Blazing Onion has six other locations in Washington, including Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, Marysville Gateway Plaza, Mill Creek Town Center, Snohomish Station, Uptown Gig Harbor and Tacoma Mall. This is the first Blazing Onion franchise. It is being opened by the Jones’ close friend of 18 years, Matt Hollek, along with Matt’s son Russell and business partner Yury Morgachev. Ban tanning beds for minors With melanoma skin cancer cases rising, and evidence piling up as to the reason why — the FDA has sensibly, if belatedly, proposed banning minors from using tanning beds. The federal government follows Washington and other states that have already passed laws to keep young people from using the beds. The majority of other states allow tanning with a parent’s signature; the federal action would unify the regulations — just like laws prohibiting minors from smoking or drinking alcohol. The experts are in agreement on this: For years, The American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Dermatology and World Health Organization called on states to ban children under 18 from tanning salons. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer among people between 25 and 29, according to the National Cancer Institute. It is also the most dangerous (but not the only dangerous) form of skin cancer. Just one indoor ultraviolet tanning session, according to recent research, increases users’ chances of developing melanoma by 20 percent, and each additional session during the same year boosts the risk almost another two percent, the Skin Cancer Foundation reported. People who use tanning beds 10 or more times in their lifetime have a 34 percent increased chance of melanoma, compared with people who have never had that exposure. One of the reasons a law is necessary can be found in the a 2011 online survey by the American Academy of Dermatology, which found that most females (86 percent) who reported using an indoor tanning bed in the last year knew it could increase the risk of skin cancer, but believed that the “cosmetic reasons” of tanning outweighed the risks, the Los Angeles Times reported. And 48 percent of the indoor tanners knew someone with skin cancer or someone who’d had it. Another need for the law, according to yet another survey, is that “many white teen girls and young women who use indoor tanning beds have mothers who also use tanning beds,” HealthDay News reported. “It’s time we started treating (tanning beds) just like they are cigarettes. They are carcinogen delivery systems,” Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., said at a May 20 Capitol Hill briefing on the dangers of indoor tanning, CNN reported. “We do not allow our children to buy cigarettes, yet the tanning industry continues to target adolescent girls. And this is not unlike what we found with the tobacco industry.” Science, health and safety must trump any business concerns. Banning minors from tanning beds will prevent cancer. Fast action by the FDA is required.

BREMERTON – Several Bremerton moviegoers were conscripted as Imperial Stormtroopers by the Emperor himself as members of the 501st Legion Star Wars costuming organization visited SEEfilm theater Dec. 19. Dressed in black robes and walking with a cane, the evil leader of the Star Wars Empire (played by Rob Taylor of Redmond) walked past a line of people waiting inside. He pointed his finger at each person and said, “Stormtrooper … stormtrooper …” The moviegoers seemed bemused by their new titles. The Emperor advised them of the most important rule: Not to mention spoilers to anyone after watching the new Star Wars film. “The first rule of Star Wars is don’t talk about Star Wars,” the Emperor said. “I thought this was the Star Trek line,” he joked. Several people dressed as Star Wars characters visited the theater that day. They were a few of the 100 or so members of the local “Garrison Titan” group, which is a sub-group of the world-wide 10,000-member 501st Legion costuming organization.
They began watching the films at 1 a.m. “We were in the theater for 24 hours because we did a special event after,” Kellas said. “We do a lot of charity stuff. We love that.” The 501st raised $15 million last year worldwide for different charities, they said. “And we get to share our love of Star Wars with people around the world, which is really awesome.”

COLLEGE CONTINUED FROM A1
“The building is going to create a place that brings students from all over the campus together,” Schacht said. Also in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony were senators Christine Rolfes and Jan Angel, both instrumental in getting the project green lit and funded at the state level, as well as Bremerton mayor Patty Lent, who has also championed the project. Rolfes said that spending more than seven years to get this project going “reflects tremendous commitment from everybody at the school.” “Paraphrasing Winston Churchill, this day marks the end of the beginning. It’s taken a long time to get here. And it marks the beginning of the end for the parking lot and the old arts buildings,” Rolfes said. “But more importantly, this is really a continuation. As Rolfes said, “This building is worth the investment.” At the end of the ceremony, nearly a dozen shovels were wielded for the symbolic turning of the dirt to kick off construction. Transportation Commission seeking input on name for next ferry Public comments sought on potential names OLYMPIA – Now that funding for the fourth Olympic-Class ferry has been secured under the Connecting Washington transportation revenue package passed by the Legislature this year, the Washington State Transportation Commission has been asked to provide Washington State Ferries with a name for the new ferry by March 2016. The commission conducted a name search last year, as work began on the third 144-car ferry, and that search resulted in four eligible name proposals coming forward. The commission ultimately selected the name “Chimacum” in 2014, leaving three names that are still eligible: Cowlitz, Sammamish, and Suquamish. The commission will discuss the three remaining eligible names at their Jan. 12
and 13 meeting in Olympia and is seeking public comment on the names as part of its review and selection process. The commission will make its final selection of the name at the March 15 and 16 meeting in Olympia. People who are interested can learn more about each of the three names under consideration, by visiting the commission’s website: http://wstc. wa.gov/Naming/FerryRoadBridge/ FerryNaming2016.htm. Comments regarding the names can be emailed to: transc@wstc.wa.gov The commission will seek input from Washington State Ferries and the Ferry Advisory Committee Executive Council. Additionally, members of the Ferry Riders Opinion Group (FROG) and the Voice of Washington State (VOWS), two online survey panels made up of about 50,000 people from across the state, will have the chance to vote on the three names via an online survey that will be sent out in late January. Anyone can sign up to participate – to join the FROG go to: www.ferryridersopiniongroup. com. To join the VOWS go to: www.voiceofwashingtonsurvey.org. The commission has guidelines that help determine the eligibility of a name proposal: Names for ferries should carry statewide significance and represent our state’s image and culture. Specifically, names should represent such things as: state adopted symbols, tribal names, names of bodies of water, geographic locations, cities, counties, relate to nautical heritage, etc. Consideration will be given to the consistency with existing Washington State Ferries fleet names. Names should have broad familiarity, are non‐offensive, and meet ethical standards. Names with commercial overtones or names honoring or commemorating individuals should be avoided, but will be considered upon very careful review. Many of the 24 vessels in Washington State Ferries’ fleet have names reflecting the state’s tribal, geographic and historic heritage. The most recently named vessels – Chimacum, Samish and Tokitae – are in keeping with that tradition. For more information on the Transportation Commission, visit its web site: www.wstc.wa.gov

State parks says, ‘Hey, you, take a hike’ Free — now, that’s a good reason to get out and usher in 2016 in the great outdoors
T
he state Parks and Recreation Commission is encouraging Washingtonians to start 2016 with a healthy hike and connect with the diverse natural resources and recreation opportunities found at our state parks. Wait — a hike on New Year’s Day? Why not? Many parks will provide guided hikes, with expertise provided by rangers and volunteers. Some of the hikes will be fat-tire bike rides, snowshoe treks, as well as a 5K run. Events will take place in a diverse and dramatic range of landscapes including coastal beaches, islands, waterfalls, lowland forests, historic military batteries, geological points of interest and more. Jan. 1, 2016 is “State Parks Free” Day. Participants will not need to display the Discover Pass on vehicles to access state parks that day. (So, get started on at least one of those New Year’s resolutions.) “We’re very excited to once again join other state park systems across the country in the First Day Hikes program,” said Don Hoch, Washington State Parks director. “Washington was among the first states to participate when the (program) began, and we’re pleased this year to be offering more than 25 First Day Hikes in Washington state parks. We hope folks will get their families out to join us for some healthy outdoor activity in the parks on New Year’s Day.” The First Day Hikes program is part of the America’s State Parks First Day Hikes national initiative organized by the National Association of State Park Directors. The nationwide event

Since 2013, all 50 state park systems have participated in the First Day Hikes program. For more information about hikes across the country, visit www.naspd.org/initiatives-special-programs/ first-day-hikes/. Most parks will provide refreshments, thanks to a donation from the Washington State Employees Credit Union and the Manufactured Home and Recreational Vehicle Association. Shouldn’t this be a positive attribute among evolving homo sapiens? Dozens of referendums will be filed to cut government size and spending, with little discussion of the impact of the proposed cuts on citizens. Pessimistic pundits, and everyone who wants a Republican elected President, will opine that things have never been worse and will stay that way unless the party in The White House is changed. Rather than eradicate hunger, as the amount of money spent on political campaigns could do, we will watch billions of dollars flow into campaign coffers. Campaign seasons have some surprises, but, more often, are as predictable as rain. JANUARY Candidates, having come out of the woodwork since last summer, most more likely to fly than get elected, will try and distinguish themselves without straying too far away from the party line. In October 2016, “a major retailer will announce that, to jumpstart the American economy, their ‘Black Friday‘ sales will begin at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Some avid shoppers will propose their family have turkey for breakfast so they can get to the sales.” — Jeff Tolman

Continued from page 9 AUGUST The Democratic convention will nominate their candidate. Each speaker will blame the Republicans for every bad thing since The Original Sin. The Republicans will run ads opining that the Democratic candidate has never done a decent thing as a politician or person, and anyone who votes for him/her must love being miserable. Political negotiating will begin, positioning the leading Republican presidential hopeful as a almost-unanimously-loved nominee and the trailing candidate as a nearly perfect Vice President-inwaiting. SEPTEMBER The Republican convention will nominate their candidate. Each speaker (many who previously during a hard-fought campaign described the nominee in unflattering terms and pointed out he/she would make a miserable President) will compliment the nominee on their brilliance, perspective, and dedication to the American Dream, and blame the Democrats for every bad thing since The
Original Sin. Under the banner of “Let’s Get American Business Going Again,” some retailer will create a special-colored theme day (like Orange Thursday) to instigate early Christmas shopping. The new television season will begin with mostly remakes of old shows and old stars in new series. One out of every two phone calls at home and one out of every five TV and radio ads will be from a political party or campaign. OCTOBER A major retailer will announce that, to jumpstart the American economy, their “Black Friday” sales will begin at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Some avid shoppers will propose their family have turkey for breakfast so they can get to the sales. Nearly every phone call at home and every TV and radio ad will be from a political party or campaign. NOVEMBER Election Day will be viewed with great relief, no matter who wins. Our phones will stop ringing and the political ads will be replaced by beer ads and 30-second videos of middle-aged men and women suddenly smiling
at each other and ending up in adjacent bathtubs. Despite our general hatred for the way the leaders of the nation are working, nearly all of the incumbents will be re-elected. The newly elected officials will tell the voters they will work with members of the other party in the nation’s best interest. At the new Congress’s orientation, the party whip will point out that any of the newly minted elected officials who want to be a committee chair in their career will vote the party line. Every time. On Thanksgiving, hundreds of people will give thanks we only have a Presidential elections every four years. DECEMBER As the holiday season approaches, many people will take a moment to count their blessings. Their family and friends. Good health. A roof over their heads and food on their stomachs. And that our phones are wonderfully silent. — Jeff Tolman is a lawyer and Municipal Court judge. He lives in Poulsbo.

Celebrate 27th annual Mochi Tsuki on Jan. 3 BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — For over a millennium, making and eating the sweet rice treat mochi (moe-chee) has been a celebrated New Year’s tradition in Japan, with generations of families and communities coming together to wish good health and prosperity for the new year. The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community’s mochi tsuki (moe-chee-zu-key) event is one of the nation’s longest-running. And the community invites the general public to the 27th annual community celebration, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 3 at IslandWood, 4450 Blakely Ave. NE. IslandWood staff and volunteers will offer tours of the award-winning School in the Woods. The event is free and donations for mochi are welcome. Parking is limited at the site and nearby Blakley Elementary School; carpooling is encouraged. Highlights include performances from the acclaimed Seattle taiko drum group Kokon Taiko; to comply with fire safety laws, each of the three taiko drum performances will be limited to 175 seats.

some of them with a sweet bean paste called ahn. While arguably mochi is best eaten hot and fresh, many enjoy roasting it in the oven, then dipping the
puffy and crisp hot mochi cakes into a combination of sugar and soy sauce. For future enjoyment, mochi can be frozen in airtight bags.

Ross Erric, an online reader of the North Kitsap Herald, submitted these images of a painting he owns, which was painted by Northwest artist DeWane Breckenridge (1929-1977). Breckenridge was the subject of a story in the Herald in 2014 after a fragment of a circa 1950s painting he did was found during demolition of the old Voodiez restaurant on Front Street in downtown Poulsbo. “You did an article on March 11, 2014 about a partial painting discovered,” Erric emailed. “I found a full painting by the same artist. Do you think the Poulsbo Historical Museum would be interested in obtaining it? I am willing to donate it to them if they will cover the postage.” Judy Driscoll of the Poulsbo Historical Society responded: “If I remember right, [Breckenridge] was an itinerant artist, not a local one, and since the painting offered isn’t a local scene, we may pass on it. We try to stick to local artists, local subjects, etc. But I’ll see what the rest of the accessions committee thinks.” No word yet as of this writing.
